Meadows named Director of Liberty Senior Center

The Randolph Senior Adults Association’s Liberty Senior Center has a new face as its new director.

Katlyn Meadows was named Director of the Liberty Senior Center, and took over her new role at the beginning of March, replacing Kaffy Reynolds who retired after more than two decades. Meadows comes to her new position after having worked with senior adults in Hospice, senior, and home health care. She worked as a CNA for nine years and loved being the person that her clients depended on every day. She feels the relationships she has built over the past decade has made her a better person. “My favorite position I had as a CNA would have to of been when I was a hospice aide,” says Meadows. “There was something to rewarding about being the last person to give love and care to my clients in their last moments of their lives.” In her new role as Director of the Liberty Senior Center, Meadows looks forward to bringing new people to the Center and increasing activities for seniors. “I am looking forward to the interaction with the seniors in the area,” she said. “I want to be a bright light in their life, to give them something to look forward to every day.” She encourages folks to stop in and see what the Center is all about. There’s something for everyone!

After 47 years at the same location, the Liberty Senior Center recently moved to 239 S. Fayetteville Street, beside the Liberty Public Library. We will be hosting an Open House soon where you can tour the new location and visit with the new Director.

Dedicated to Knowledge, Service & Results Since 1999 in Chatham & Randolph County

“On average we have between eight and 16 seniors at the center daily,” says Meadows. “I would love to grow that number and have more seniors joining us each day for healthy aging, social connection, and lifelong learning opportunities.”

Your Senior Center can open the door to new, healthy aging experiences. Whether you’re still working, semi-retired, a caregiver, or just ready to have some fun and make new friends, we encourage you to stop by and visit. Once you do, we’re sure you’ll find a reason to come back!

About the Randolph Senior Adults Association: The Randolph Senior Adults Association (RSAA), a nonprofit organization, is the community’s lead organization for adults age 50 and over. RSAA is a United Way agency. For more information, visit: www.senioradults.org.

Agreement to participate in Siler City, Liberty, & Ramseur Coalition Brownsfields Coalition Grant

This coalition is made up of Siler City, Ramseur, and Liberty. Generally, brownfield sites exist in a city or town's industrial section, on locations with abandoned factories or commercial buildings, or other former polluting operations. Small brownfields also may be found in many older residential neighborhoods or along rural roads. Brownfield redevelopment transforms blighted properties into sustainable, productive reuses that:

* Use government resources to leverage private investments to meet the combined needs of the community and the marketplace

* Reduce urban sprawl by eliminating barriers to brownfield redevelopment

We hosted a viewing of the documentary, "The Veteran's Battlefield" which explores the varied experiences of North Carolina veterans and the importance of getting benefits and services to them. Following the showing, a great discussion was had with veterans from Vietnam to Afghanistan and resource opportunities including Charlie Mike, an organization training dogs for veterans, the Community Navigators Program, and the veteran's services. Special thanks to our Mayor, Filmore York, and former Town Councilman, J.R. Beard for participating on the discussion panel and to our County Commisioners, Hope Haywood and David Allen, for moderating the discussion.

ANOTHER CAT PAINTING AT THE LIBRARY

Sticking with the very popular cat theme, we designed a painting for all ages to make two cats sitting on a swing beneath the moon. It's always fun to see the myriad variations when participants can be shown the same steps for an activity, be given the same materials or colors of paint, and it's always a beautiful result!

PUFFY SNOW PAINTING

It may not snow for the rest of this winter, but we had snow painting at the library in February! Combining glue, shaving cream, and paint, we had attendees of all ages applying the mixture to wooden snowflake shapes for a puffy painting experience!

Common Ground

Common Ground is a new monthly feature that will explore and navigate the transformation as we go from small town Liberty to Liberty, Home of the Toyota Megasite. A topic of much division, with many excited for the progress and growth this brings, and many concerned for losing the small town charm of Liberty’s past–this space will tackle it all–the good, the bad and the ugly. No matter your opinion of Liberty’s future, we all share a love for our town and that is the Common Ground upon which we can build.

In writing this column, it is well established that I love both writing and my small hometown, so when the two can be meshed together it really makes me happy. Last month I wrote about my son asking what Liberty was like when I was a kid growing up here. The responses to that column made me feel so happy. I received feedback from folks around my age who validated those memories I had shared and took the time to reach out and share some of their own, or just to say thanks for the trip down memory lane. I had folks who grew up in an earlier time in Liberty reach out and share some of their favorite memories as well, which I find particularly interesting as I love to imagine what the downtown area was like before my time. But the best feedback I received was a voicemail message from Ms. Odelia’s daughter. I mentioned the times I sat with Ms. Odelia when I was young. She was the dispatcher for Liberty’s emergency services and often times if mom had sent me to run an errand with my dad, who was a Liberty volunteer firefighter, I got the opportunity to sit at the station with Ms. Odelia rather than sit in dad’s truck on the side of the road while he attended whatever the emergency happened to be that day. I loved my time with Ms. Odelia and she always made me feel welcomed. It was so sweet to receive a voicemail message from her daughter thanking me for remembering her mom.

A week or so later, my husband and I attended the visitation for Mr. Johnny Younts at Loflin Funeral Home. At 102 years of age, Mr. Younts had fallen into the role of town historian if for nothing else than the fact he had seen our town for more years than most. But Mr. Younts did much more than just live in Liberty–he played a big role in helping shape our small town with his years as a local businessman and by serving his community as a town councilman. As the long line snaked its way around the building, I listened and took in various fragments of stories–stories of those a few generations older than me that looked up to Mr. Younts who was a few generations older than those telling the stories. I caught bits and pieces of what Mr. Younts had known about the water system of Liberty, what type of successful business man he was, and stories of his traveling adventures with his wife, Jean. But no matter what type of story I caught a snippet of here or there as we waited in line, it all came down to one thing–Mr. Younts had left a positive impression on so many people who knew him in our small town. The stories told in the funeral home line and the voicemail message from Ms. Odelia’s daughter made me think about all the different folks who have come before us in our small town of Liberty, some still here and some that are no longer with us, that have made an enduring positive impact for one reason or another. And I began thinking–what a better way to show our love for this small town that is in the midst of big changes than to reflect on the people who have made a lasting impression.

With this in mind, I challenge you to share a brief paragraph about someone in Liberty that has left a positive impression on you–maybe they are no longer on this Earth or perhaps they are still here to hear the words of thanks. Maybe this is someone from your church, or a co-worker, a former teacher, someone who helped you out in your time of need, someone who saved the day for you in some way shape or form, but someone who made the difference.

Afterall, just like I wrote last month–the best part about the people of Liberty, way back then and now, are the people. What better way to welcome newcomers to our small town and show them why we love it so much, but to share these people with them, if by nothing else than their legacy–sharing the stories of who we are and why.

You can share your memories of someone in our small town that has made a difference by either sending me an email at robinbkirkman@gmail.com or send it via snail mail to Robin Kirkman, P.O. Box 298, Liberty, NC 27298. I know there are some good memories and good people to share with our town and what collect these and add them into Common Ground each month.

Can’t find a loved one’s life insurance policy? We can help

Have you ever wondered if a loved one who passed away had a life insurance policy? Or perhaps you’ve searched all over the place looking for a relative’s insurance policy.

We have a locator service that can answer your question. If indeed your loved one did have a policy, we can help you find it.

The Department of Insurance has a Lost Life Insurance and Annuity Inquiry Service to help consumers locate benefits from life insurance policies or annuity contracts purchased in North Carolina.

If you’re an executor or legal representative of a deceased person, or if you believe you are a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you may submit an inquiry form with the Department of Insurance. Then, we’ll help you search for the policy.

Our program works! Last year, the Department of Insurance helped North Carolinians recover $65.9 million in life insurance benefits.

People purchase life insurance for several reasons. They may want to:

 Allow a surviving spouse to continue to have a comfortable standard of living.

 Make retirement more comfortable.

 Provide for a child’s education.

 Pay for funeral expenses.

 Pay for medical bills.

 Pay off a mortgage so surviving family members don’t have to worry about having a roof over their head.

 Pay off other outstanding debts.

Whatever the reason for taking out a life insurance policy, beneficiaries expect to be able to receive those benefits when a loved one dies.

However, the life insurance policy may have been taken out years ago, or perhaps even decades ago. Families may have moved over the years. The policy may have been misplaced, or even accidentally thrown away. Searching through desk drawers or filing cabinets may yield no results.

You can find the Lost Life Insurance and Annuity Inquiry Service on the Department of Insurance’s web page at www.ncdoi.gov. Click on the “Assistance/Complaints” tab and then click on the “Lost Life Insurance” tab. It’s the one with the magnifying glass/search icon.

After agreeing to the terms and conditions, you will be asked to provide some information about yourself and the deceased.

If you’re having trouble or need assistance, you can call our toll-free number at 855-408-1212 to speak to one of our consumer specialists. Please call between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

Also, you can keep that toll-free number handy in case you have any other questions or issues regarding insurance.

The Eastern Randolph High School FFA Alumni in cooperation with Jay Hinson and his Lucky J Rodeo Company and Arena is presenting their 20th annual Jeff Hinson Memorial North Carolina High School Rodeo. It will be held on May 3rd and May 4th at 7:00 pm at the Lucky J Arena on Hwy 64 East of Ramseur. The arena is at the intersection of Hwy 64 and Shady Grove Road near Ramseur. The purpose of this event is to raise scholarship money for graduating FFA members, assist in sending FFA members to local, state, and national leadership conferences, and to help financially support the Agriculture Education/FFA programs at Eastern Randolph High School and Southeastern Randolph Middle School.

This event is being governed by the N.C. High School Rodeo Association. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character in the youth of our state. They give high school students the opportunity to participate and compete in this unique and challenging sport. The NCHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from the other varsity sports. The athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors. Contestants will compete in the following events: Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Breakaway Calf Roping, Cattle Cutting, Team Roping, Goat Tying, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, & Steer Wrestling.

There are over 50 local sponsors many of whom have sponsored all twenty of the rodeo events. Wayne Thomas Chevrolet is the overall sponsor of this event. Other major sponsors are Caviness Farms Grading, Inc. of Siler City, Harvest House of Ramseur, Asheboro Kubota, Swaim Heating and Air Conditioning of Climax, Randolph County Farm Bureau, Liberty Farm and Garden, Randolph County Livestock and Poultry Improvement Association, Carolina Stockyards of Siler City, Culpepper Wood Preservers of Coleridge, and James River Equipment of Asheboro.

Food sales will start at 5:30 pm for participants and people attending the rodeo event. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate. Children 5 years and under get in free. Tickets can be purchased at Eastern Randolph High School and the Wayne Thomas Dealership in Asheboro. This is a family event and we will have activities for young children each night. We will have local area students participating both nights as well as other high school students from across the state. For more information, call Raymond Caviness at 919-742-3296 or 336-953-1424.

Ernest Clay “Johnny” Younts

Randolph County - Liberty, NC

Ernest Clay “Johnny” Younts, age 102, of Liberty passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Randolph Hospice House.

Johnny grew up in Climax, NC. At age 5 his mother died of Tuberculosis. Over the next 5 years, he would lose two sisters and one brother to the dreaded disease. At that early age, Johnny developed the toughness, grit and determination that would carry him throughout his life. In his early 20's Johnny was drafted and served his country in the US Army, where he was a WWII veteran. It was during this time that he would meet his future wife, Jean Thomas of Endicott, VA. Upon returning after the war, they married in July 1946. Their union produced two children, Ernie Younts and Rosemary Younts Bray. Johnny was fearless! He was even persuaded by some of his Liberty buddies to drive a racecar in the Southern 500 in Darlington, SC on Labor Day Weekend 1951. After his short racing career of one race, Johnny owned and operated several small businesses in Liberty. Later he was elected to the Liberty Town Council for 14 years. His last term serving as Mayor Pro-Tempore, where he was a great advocate for our little town. After retiring, Johnny and Jean loved to travel and enjoyed visiting with their families. They were both active volunteers with Meals-On-Wheels and the C.A.R.S. Program in Liberty. A stack of plaques and certificates give a nod to his contributions to the Town of Liberty. The Liberty Chamber of Commerce recognized him as the Business Person of the Year in 1998. The Liberty Rotary Club honored him in Appreciation for Service Above Self in 2014. In January 2024 he received a certificate from Liberty Legion Post #81 to mark 78 years of continuous membership. Many words are used to describe Johnny, honesty, integrity, kindness, compassionate to name a few. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community. He was truly a member of the "Greatest Generation".

He was the son of the late Earl Clay and Erma Fields Younts and was also preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Younts; grandson-in-law, Adam McCauley; sisters, Elizabeth Younts and Mabel Younts; and brothers, George Younts, Carl Younts, Joseph Younts, Lane Younts, Jack Younts, Tom Younts and Hal Younts.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 77 years, Jean Thomas Younts; daughter, Rosemary Bray and her husband, Tommy; son, Ernie Younts and his wife, Elizabeth; three grandchildren, Amy Brown (Kevin), Lauren Thompson (Bennett) and Meredith McCauley; and 11 great-grandchildren.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Liberty American Legion Post #81, PO Box 42, Liberty, NC 27298 or Hospice of Randolph, 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203.

Please share your thoughts and memories with the family at www.LoflinFH.com.

Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty is honored to serve the Younts family.
