Labor Day in the United States was established to recognize the contributions and achievements of American workers. The idea for the holiday came in the 1880s during a time of growing labor movements, demanding better working conditions, fair wages, and shorter hours. The first Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. Over time, the idea spread to other cities, and by 1894, Labor Day became a federal holiday following a nationwide railroad strike and related unrest. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law as a way to repair relations with the labor movement. Originally marked by street parades and speeches, it gradually became associated with picnics, public events, and a long weekend of rest. Labor Day also unofficially marks the end of summer in the U.S. and is often tied to back-to-school sales and events. Although its original meaning is sometimes overshadowed by leisure activities, Labor Day remains rooted in honoring the American labor force.

Poe Family Farm is a family-owned and operated boutique flower farm and floral design studio located in Liberty, NC. The Poe family is dedicated to growing a wide variety of specialty cut flowers for the local community. They employ small-scale, high-intensity farming methods to cultivate their offerings without the use of pesticides. In addition, they specialize in flower arrangements for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations, using only flowers that they grow themselves.
Lindsey and Robert Poe, alongside their three children, are the proud owners and operators of Poe Family Farm. After purchasing the farm in the spring of 2014, they spent over a decade learning about the land and cultivating various crops. From pasture-raised meats to produce, they have explored it all. Some efforts succeeded, while others did not. However, fueled by their passion for the land and a desire to lead a farming lifestyle, they never gave up. In 2019, they decided to focus on what truly brings them joy: Lindsey, born and raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, developed a love for nature and the outdoors from a young age. Her grandmother, a Master Gardener and avid plant lover, guided her in learning about gardening and different types of blooms. "I vividly remember riding along with my 'Gammy,' who would often spot a beautiful patch of to knock on their door," she recalls. "After a friendly conversation—and often a tour of their garden—Gammy would typically leave with newfound plant knowledge and some gifted bulbs that the homeowner generously allowed her to dig up." Lindsey adds, "Those always made her happy, and they made me happy too. Flowers have a unique way of adding something special to people's life experiences. Whether it’s the color of the blooms, the sweetness of their scent, or the sentiment behind how they were given to you, flowers can transform any moment instantly."
Robert, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, may not have as many specific memories associated with flowers as Lindsey does, but he possesses a deep love for farming and the land. "When we first bought our farm, we were expecting our third child. I understood that this land was not only an opportunity to create something that could support my growing family but also a place where we could raise our kids with the strong family values important to us," he shares. "Over the years, I have watched my children grow and develop their own love for nature and the outdoors. I’ve seen the kindness they show while caring for our animals, the gentleness they exhibit when helping to plant vegetables in the garden, and the joy that fills their hearts when picking fresh flowers. These moments make all the hardships of farming worthwhile. I know this life is shaping them positively, and the values and experiences they gain here on the farm will stay with them for a lifetime. Plus, I really enjoy driving my tractor!" he adds jokingly. At Poe Family Farm, their mission is to spread happiness through the beauty of flowers. Each season, they thoughtfully plant a variety of sustainable flowers in their fields that enhance the landscape, foster connections to nature, and promote health and well-being. They believe flowers can bring people together and strengthen the community. "Our farm serves as a place of inspiration, and we invite you to join our classes and events to fully appreciate the beauty we have to offer," Lindsey says. Poe Family Farm’s specialty cut flowers are available for scheduled pickup from the farm and for delivery to the local community. They can also be found at The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market every Saturday from May through October. Starting in September, they will open the fields for "You Picks" and fun, flower-filled workshops. Tickets for these events can be found on their website www.poefamilyfarm.com.

In 1937, William Otis and Grace Kivett built and operated a cafe and barbecue pit just south of Liberty at 3832 Old Hwy 421. By the early 1940's this location became what was undoubtedly one of the first malls in North Carolina. The business expanded to include a grocery store, hardware store, a bowling alley, body shop and car and truck dealership (Pontiac and GMC) and Massey Harris tractor dealership. For Liberty residents this was a one stop shopping center. You could get a home cooked plate lunch or sandwich for breakfast, lunch or dinner with curb service available. You could purchase groceries, hardware, appliances, all the while getting your car serviced and hand washed. Whiskey was also available and, according to Wade Shelton, there was a fight every Saturday night. Three two-room motel rooms or party houses were located on the property along the pond. In August, 1953, most of the buildings were destroyed by fire. The truck, car and tractor dealership was the only portion that remained. In later years, Kenny Kivett painted Bush Grand National cars there for the late Fred Turner. Today, Rascal Kivett operates Kivett's Welding there. "Kivett's Mall" was certainly ahead of its time, one of the first of North Carolina's shopping centers. (Information and photo courtesy of Barbara and Kenny Kivett)
