Linnut suuntaavat Ylläkselle esimerkiksi maamerkkien, hajuaistin, auringon, tähtien ja maan magneettikentän turvin. Auringonlasku on monille linnuille tärkeä hetki: sen mukaan linnut päivittävät sijaintinsa ja tekevät tarvittavat korjaukset lentosuunnitelmaansa. Nuoret joutsenet oppivat muuttoreitin vanhemmiltaan.
The Sun is the Compass. Good orientation skills are vital for migratory birds, as getting lost may be fatal. The birds find their way to Ylläs with the aid of landmarks, their sense of smell, the Sun, stars and the Earth’s magnetic field. For many birds, the sunset is an important moment, because then they know their position and can make the necessary changes in their flight plan. Young swans learn the migratory route from their parents.
