FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES TO CURRENT DAY The Elk’s Head sculpture found in Huittinen is a sign of prehistoric life in the region of Satakunta. The finding, which is one of the best-known prehistoric articles in Finland, is estimated to originate from around 5200 BCE. The latest period of the Stone Age in Finland, the Kiukainen culture (2000–1200 BCE), was named after the major dwelling discovered in Uotinmäki, in the village of Panelia in the region of Satakunta. The burial site of Sammallahdenmäki in Rauma and the Rieskaronmäki dwelling site in Nakkila are reminders of life in the bronze age. According to a folk tale, the jump from prehistory to history happened on the ice covering Lake Köyliönjärvi in the 12th century, when Bishop Henry met Lalli with fatal consequences. In the medieval times, various towns were established in the Satakunta region: Ulvila was granted town privileges in 1365 and Rauma in 1442. Pori had to wait until 1558 for its founder Duke John. In the 18th century, it was even suggested that the village of Reposaari should become the capital of Finland. In 1752, King Adolf Frederick stopped in Kankaanpää to water his horses and thus Kuninkaanlähde, the King’s Spring, received its name. The ironworks of Kauttua, Leineperi, and Noormarkku were in their golden era as was lace-making in Rauma. The landscape was changing, as lakes and marshes were drained to be used as farmland.

The bronze age burial site of Sammallahdenmäki in Rauma’s Lappi is a unique and impressive site. An extinct culture and the burial methods of a Scandinavian community can be studied around the site. In 1999, Sammallahdenmäki was chosen to be Finland’s first archeological site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The wooded islet of Liikistö is located right beside the old center of Ulvila. In the early medieval period, Liikistö was an island surrounded by watercourses. The photograph shows the ancient stone circle located on the highest point of Liikistö. Nowadays, the area has been protected as an ancient and nature conservation site.

In Pori’s Reposaari Fortress, located on the Takasaari beach, visitors can explore a wartime bunker from the 1930s, along with trenches, dugouts, and ammunition stores or admire the seascape from the observation tower.

9

At the turn of the 20th century, a sawmill was built in Kauttua, in Eira, after the decline of the ironworks. Completed in 1911, Villa Ahlström, which combines late Art Nouveau with classicism, was designed by architect Jarl Eklund. Nowadays, the stone building is used by the Pyhäjärvi Institute.

To this day, the bakery of the Leineperi, or Fredriksfors ironworks in Kullaa, built in the 1860s, houses a café restaurant.

10

The area of the Leineperi, or Fredriksfors, ironworks in Kullaa originates from the end of the 18th century. The area, which has been preserved completely, contains almost all of the buildings and structures that were typical in Finnish ironworks. The photograph shows one of only four blast furnaces that have been preserved intact in Finland, and the only one of its kind.

MEDIEVAL MONUMENT IN ULVILA One of the most significant and valuable medieval monuments in Finland is St. Olaf ’s Church in Ulvila. It is the only remaining sign of the medieval town of Ulvila. Estimates on the age of the church vary, but it was most likely built around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The wooden steeple next to the church was designed by Jaakko Winberg, a carpenter from Pori, in the 1750s. The onionshaped dome of the church was renovated into the current sharper shape in 1862, based on the design of G. T. Chiewitz. The Kirkkojuopa, a branch of the Kokemäenjoki River, flows on the western side of the church, while the road on the eastern side is part of the historic Bothnian Coast Road. The church is still actively used by the Ulvila parish and offers a distinguished setting for services and both weddings and funerals. There are also several wooden churches in the Satakunta region, and the first Finnish church built in the functionalist style is found in Nakkila.

The oldest part of the Church of St. Catherine in Huittinen originates from the medieval period. The gable wall of the eastern point of the church has remained almost unchanged from the 1490s (opposite page). The wooden church of Kankaanpää (top-left) was completed in 1839, based on the designs of C. L. Engel and the Church of Merikarvia (bottom-left), designed by Johan Nordstrand, in 1899. In Eura, the Church of Panelia was built by the villagers in 1909.

BUILT-UP ENVIRONMENT The built-up cultural environment of the Satakunta region is based on the rustic building tradition, the parish and fishing villages, and the industrial and urban environments. The influence of the different eras and trends are seen in the builtup landscape and its scale includes both historical estates and modern architecture. The Satakunta region has many sites that have been designated as nationally significant cultural environments by the National Board of Antiquities. Many of the sites are open to the public, offering various events and guided tours. The hand of Alvar Aalto can be seen in approximately 20 sites around the Satakunta region. Aalto’s comprehensive masterpiece Villa Mairea is located in the Noormarkku ironworks village. The house was built in 1939 as a modern residence for Maire and Harry Gullichsen. Aalto also designed the Terraced House in Kauttua’s Ruukinpuisto park as well as other buildings around the park.

Industrialist Fritz Arthur Jusélius built the Jusélius Mausoleum as the final resting place of his daughter Sigrid, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 11. To this day, the mausoleum is a popular tourist attraction.
