Markham’s homes tell a lot about the history of the city and its people. This city is known to show significant value for their heritage houses, thus making it a point to locate any old home that is in danger of being demolished and relocating it with means of preservation. The George Quantz house is one of the many heritage houses in Richmond Hill. Situated at 8763 Bayview Avenue, the house is also recognized as the “Quantz House” that was home to many generations of the Quantz family. Today, a 7-storey boutique condominium with 174 units stands on Bayview Avenue. In 2013, the Tao Condos building began construction and the George Quantz house was relocated and repurposed at the north-end of the condo’s compound.

Who are the Quantz? The Quantz family is a well-known family in the history of Richmond Hill. The family’s background in Markham goes all the way back to 1794 when Melchior Quantz settled in Canada. Melchior was also known by his peers and neighbours as “Michael”. Back in the day, Melchior served in the English Army as a soldier. He was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany but spent the majority of his adult life in Markham and was buried in the Buttonville Cemetery in 1827. The George Quantz house was built by Albert Edgar Quantz who was the father of the first resident, Harvey George Quantz. The Quantz’s family tree is indeed a large one with many branches as the family is known to make large families with multiple children. As an example, George Quantz and Maryann Baker, the first family that lived in the house, had 12 children; George B. Quantz and Jane Quantz had nine, and the cycle continues. In fact, the George Quantz house has a rough estimate of 70 grandchildren, with the name George being passed on multiple times.
