KIPP DC staff members empower the next generation of Washingtonians by equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence for success in college, careers, and life. At every level, teachers and staff at KIPP DC focus on creating a joyful, identifyaffirming learning environment that produces extraordinary outcomes for all students.
We aim for KIPP DC to be the best place in our nation’s capital for educators to grow professionally and make an impact .
Through a robust professional development program, first-class benefits, ample resources, and a team and family culture; educators can reach new heights in their careers by joining the KIPP DC community.
KIPP DC is consistently the highest performing PreK-12 public school system in the District of Columbia. Our students are matriculating to college at nearly twice the DC average, and our alumni are on track to graduate at four times the DC average.
Student success is the direct result of having exceptional teachers in every classroom. KIPP DC was founded by a veteran educator who believed there was a better way to support and educate students. Since our founding, the voice of teachers and parents has shaped how we meet the needs of students and propel them onward to success.

An excellent education is more than just academics . School culture and extracurriculars foster a sense of belonging and create a community where students and staff can thrive together . From playbased learning with our youngest students to a focus on restorative practices in our secondary schools, we aim for schools to be joyful and inclusive . Staff lead by example and support students to develop passions by leading clubs or student organizations .
“I feel valued and respected here. I feel the love from the admin team and the people I work with.
It feels like a family. It helps that we are all here for our students, so we work together to make sure a school is a fun place for our students to come and that they are actively learning.”

At KIPP DC, our team and family include staff, students and their families, alumni, and partners. This is more than shorthand; it means we celebrate, collaborate, and uplift each other. By doing this work together as a community, we are stronger. As a public school system, we also aim to identify and confront institutional racism to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization for staff and students. Bi-annual all-staff surveys, school culture committees, and our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coalition ensure we create a culture that allows the team to grow and thrive.
Providing best-in-class benefits to our teachers and staff is one of our top properties. KIPP DC largely covers healthcare premiums for full-time staff; these benefits include healthcare, dental, and vision insurance. Our employer sponsored 403(b) retirement plan includes a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match. Our staff calendar supports wellness and sustainability with ample breaks during the school year and afternoons off on special staff development days. In addition, perks such as free One Medical boutique healthcare allow teachers to access many services and balance the demands of classroom instruction.
Every day we learn, grow, and support each other to ensure excellent results for our students .
We seek to deliver unparalleled coaching and development to maximize teachers’ impact on student achievement. Our targeted, year-round professional development program is rooted in antiracist practices and aligned to a core curriculum provided to all teachers. Staff receive regular feedback and coaching from an administrator and content coach, allowing them to hone their craft and focus on lesson delivery and differentiation. Our team is never alone with access to resources and support from colleagues across the District and nationwide KIPP community.

For individuals without lead teaching experience, KIPP DC’s Capital Teaching Residency program provides a pathway into the profession.
During this time, residents develop the skills and mindsets of highly effective teachers through a gradual release model supported by a mentor teacher and school leaders, weekly certification coursework, and extensive professional development. Weekly sessions are taught by content experts and include real-life practice and application of skills. In years two and three, alumni receive coaching and development in preparation for licensure.

During development and wellness days, we also call upon outside experts to build context and understanding for our staff. Past external speakers include Ibriam Kendi, Jason Reynolds, Nikki Giovani, and other well-known education influencers. Wellness and development days allow our team to grow professionally while having several afternoons off during the school year to recharge.
