Festive Street Market other Community Events & Activities

Welcome to Kinross-shire’s Winter Festival 2017; a celebration of exciting community events from the end of October, through November and into December. Activities for the whole family on your doorstep such as festive shopping, live music, pantos, Santa’s Grottos and party nights. This year’s festival will be themed around ‘words’ in partnership with Loch Leven Community Library. Highlights will include Liz Lochhead, formerly Scotland’s Makar (National Poet), who will perform with The Hazey Janes, an indie pop band from Dundee on Friday 3rd November. We are also delighted to announce that during Book Week Scotland 2017, which runs from Monday 27th November to Sunday 3rd December, author Mairi Hedderwick will come to Kinross and talk about the making of Katie Morag! For other fabulous events, just browse through this brochure!

The hugely successful Festive Street Market is back (25th Nov), giving shoppers the chance to find unusual and unique gifts in time for Christmas. There will also be plenty of live music and family entertainment. Light Up Kinross will take place the same evening, so make sure you are there for the big switch on! This year’s Winter Festival is, once again, an exciting collaboration between local businesses and community groups. Do come along to enjoy, and make the most of what’s on offer in your community! www.kleo.org.uk

Words for all KLEO (Kinross-shire Local Events Organisation) is a Book Week Scotland 2017 partner this year and together with Loch Leven Community Library we hope to bring an exciting programme of ‘words’ themed events during the Kinross-shire’s Winter Festival.

Liz Lochhead & The Hazey Janes Friday 3 November / 8pm Loch Leven Community Campus Tickets £10 (£8 concession) / BYOB A concert with new collaborative pieces from Scotland’s former Makar, author and playwright Liz Lochhead with indie pop band The Hazey Janes. The project grew from Liz’s long friendship with the late Michael Marra, the acclaimed Dundonian singer-songwriter. His son Matthew and daughter Alice play with The Hazey Janes,

and the group spent time improvising and creating music with Liz Lochhead’s narrative in mind. They brought this to the studio at An Tobar, and as they played the arrangements Liz managed to select the ideal poem from her portfolio! From the monochrome stills of “Some Old Photographs” to the weightless optimism of “In The Mid-Midwinter” the words and music hang in perfect balance. Tickets also available at Loch Leven Community Library.

Wednesday 29 November / 4pm Loch Leven Community Library Children free, adults £5

Saturday 2 December / 2pm Loch Leven Community Library Tickets £10 (from library)

Mairi Hedderwick, author and illustrator, comes to Kinross to talk to children (and adults) about her most famous creation - the Isle of Struay inhabitant, Katie Morag. Mairi will discuss how a Katie Morag book is made, drawing parallels with her ideas and preparation for a book and children’s own efforts to write stories. A fantastic event for all!

Always wanted to write? This is your chance to undertake a workshop with a real professional! Liz Lochhead’s ‘Beginning to Write Workshop’ is an event for a maximum of twenty people of any age or gender, either experienced writers or keen beginners. Participants meet round a big table in a private room (as it is not a spectator sport!). There will be piles of scrap paper and biros (some folk do seem to expect not to write at a writing workshop!!?!).

Tickets also available at Loch Leven Community Library.
