Gerda Stevenson
Jess Smith
Wednesday 20 November | 7.30pm Loch Leven Community Campus Tickets £5
Thursday 21 November | 7.30pm Loch Leven Community Campus Tickets £5
Award-winning writer/actor/singer-songwriter Gerda Stevenson, reads from her acclaimed collection, QUINES: Poems in tribute to women of Scotland. This remarkable book celebrates Scottish women from all walks of life – scientists, artists, a fish-gutter, politicians, sportswomen, queens, a salt-seller, singers, an engineer and many more – from Neolithic times to the 21st century. Nominated as Scots Singer of the Year for the MG Alba Trad Music Awards, Gerda will also sing songs connected to her QUINES.
Jess Smith is a Scottish traveller. Although her days of travelling finished when she met her nontraveller husband Dave, memories of her childhood never left her. Life in a Bedford bus, travelling in summer – mainly berry-picking – then travelling the old roads before winter, when they settled for the tattie lifting, became the contents of several books – three of which are autobiographical. Central to her upbringing was listening to stories and songs, shared around campfires by the old ones. Humour and fun run through her story of life as a Scottish traveller, which she will share at this year’s Kinross-shire Winter Festival.
“Gerda Stevenson’s fabulous Quines…a groundbreaker of a book.” JACKIE KAY, THE OBSERVER.
