1 OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS.
International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society. The day raises awareness of ageing in today’s world, including the impacts of an ageing population and the need to ensure that people can age with dignity and respect while continuing to participate in their communities.
On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October is the International Day of Older Persons.
and mental well being, leading to depression, heart disease, and high blood pressure. So, what more inspiration do you need to get involved? Engaged seniors are happier and healthier!
I hope by the time November rolls around, you’ll have tried something new, learned something new or made new friends.
Enjoy!
Mayor Cr Hadi SaabAccording to the United Nations, over the next three decades, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double, reaching more than 1.5 billion in 2050.
In the City of Kingston, 48,535 people are aged 55+ approximately 30 per cent of the total population (source ABS). This number is expected to increase in the future.

WHILE MANY OF US PREFER TO AVOID WORRYING ABOUT LIFE’S WORST-CASE SCENARIOS, WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEALTH, IT’S IMPORTANT TO TAKE SOME TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE UNTHINKABLE.
Advance care planning involves making decisions now about the healthcare you would like – or would not like – to receive in the future if you become so seriously ill or injured that you are unable to communicate your treatment preferences.
Perhaps you’ve already thought about what decisions you would want made if you were suddenly hospitalised; maybe you have even told your loved ones what your healthcare preferences are. While it’s important that those people closest to you are aware of your wishes, these conversations alone may not be enough to ensure you receive the care you want.
To make sure your wishes are respected, it’s important to formalise these discussions through advance care planning. Ideally, this will include recording your preferences in an advance care directive, which is legally binding. You can also consider choosing a substitute decision-maker as part of your advance care directive, with this person able to help ensure your preferences are understood and followed.
“We recommend to a lot of our clients that they consider advance care planning and consider it while they are relatively well,” says Kate Sammartino, Team Leader Nursing at AccessCare. “It can provide valuable guidance to your family and medical team regarding your wishes and values in relation in your life and your healthcare. Additionally, it can reduce stress and anxiety for family members if they ever need to make decisions for you.”
The good news is that advance care planning doesn’t need to be complicated. Getting started is easy; it requires you taking some time to really think about what’s important to you and then having conversations with your family, friends, doctors and aged care workers.
To learn more about advance care planning, please join AccessCare on Wednesday 11 October, for a special presentation supported by Monash Health. Further details are on page 8.
AccessCare is a not-for-profit home care provider that has been passionate about supporting Australians to live independently and with dignity for more than 30 years.
We offer entry-level home care support right through to comprehensive home care services to help our community members continue to live comfortably in their own homes. Backed by the City of Kingston, AccessCare currently supports more than 4,000 people across Melbourne, thanks to a dedicated team of support workers, nurses, case managers, aged care professionals and volunteers.
To find out more, please contact AccessCare on 1300 819 200 or www.accesscare.org.au
ACCORDING TO SCAMWATCH, A SCAM IS: WHEN SOMEONE DECEIVES YOU INTO PROVIDING PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION SO THEY CAN STEAL FROM YOU.
Ways scammers reach you:
• Text or SMS scams.
• Phone scams.
• Email scams.
• Social media scams.
• Website scams.
• Never give anyone remote access to your computer. A scammer might ask you to download software and then may be able to hack into your personal device.
• Be wary of unexpected callers. If you are unsure or don’t feel comfortable, it is ok to hang up and call back on a trusted number.
• Be careful who you connect with on social media. Review your privacy and security settings to ensure you stay safe. Be careful what you share, and ask yourself if you are giving away too much information, such as your birthday.
• Never send money to someone you haven’t met face to face.
• Never click on email or SMS links that ask you for personal details or direct you to make a payment.
• If a deal appears too good to be true, then it probably is.

There are many activities listed in this year’s Seniors Festival Booklet that can help you get physical during the month of October and beyond.
As the weather improves, you may wish to consider exercising outdoors. Options include a walk or bicycle ride through a section of the Bay Trail that follows the coastline of Port Phillip Bay and takes in the magnificent bay views.
The trail begins at Austin Road, Seaford near the EdithvaleSeaford Wetlands viewing platform and travels along the Bay, taking in Chelsea, Aspendale, Mordialloc, Parkdale, Mentone and beyond.
Many of Council’s Parks and Reserves have outdoor gym equipment. Come and try the equipment at the following parks:
