Mahjong origins:
Mahjong was developed in Southern China in the mid-1800s.
The word “mahjong” means “sparrow” in southern Chinese dialects, referring to the birdlike clacking sound the tiles make during reshuffling.
Why Mahjong matters:
Mahjong is more than just a game – it’s a social ritual deeply woven into Chinese culture.
For generations, the square table has been a place where family and friends gather, stories are shared, and bonds are strengthened.
The tiles themselves carry rich symbolism – from winds and dragons to circles and bamboos – reflecting harmony, balance, and tradition.
Playing Mahjong isn’t just about winning; it’s about connection, community, and keeping culture alive.
Cheltenham Library Saturday 29 November 10:00am - 1:30pm
Our Mahjong players have been honing their skills all year, and now we’re proud to host the very first Mahjong Community Tournament.
While the competition itself is reserved for our current players, everyone is warmly invited to join the audience and share in the excitement.
Come along to Cheltenham Library to watch the matches unfold, meet our Mahjong community, and discover the appeal of this timeless game.
Alongside the tournament, enjoy light refreshments, classic board games, and a Mahjong-themed film screening.
This event is the perfect chance to learn more, connect with players, and even secure an exclusive spot in our upcoming Introduction to Mahjong workshop
Our libraries now have five new Mahjong tables - two at Cheltenham, two at Chelsea, and one at Westall.
With green mats and authentic design, they offer a welcoming, traditional playing experience.
Come along, settle in at the table, and enjoy Mahjong the way it’s meant to be played.
