Kingston Libraries - What's On - July - August 2025

Page 1

Welcome!

As the colder months roll in, our libraries continue to be warm and welcoming spaces where community thrives, and stories are shared.

This July and August, our libraries are brimming with opportunities to connect, discover, and grow - from creative workshops and author talks to cultural experiences and science explorations for all ages.

We’re proud to welcome broadcaster and author Jacinta Parsons as she shares her latest book A Wisdom of Age, a beautiful celebration of the strength, resilience, and stories of older women. It’s a timely reminder that every voice

in our community holds value, and every chapter of life brings wisdom.

Whether you’re visiting for a cosy evening read, joining a workshop, or bringing the kids along for school holiday fun, I encourage you to explore everything on offer in this edition of What’s On.

And if you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to download the Kingston Libraries app - your gateway to events, eBooks, audiobooks, and more.

Stay warm, stay curious, and I look forward to seeing you at the library.

The City of Kingston acknowledges the Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this land, and pay respects to their Elders past and present.

Q&A with Jacinta Parsons

Jacinta shares stories of resilience, joy, change and rebellion.

Your new book touches on deeply personal themes. What inspired you to write it — and what do you hope readers take away from it?

After travelling around the country speaking to women about my second book - A Question of Age, it became obvious that there is so much wisdom and insights into ageing that the elder women have, that we all need to hear. So I set about having long conversations with elder women in their 70, 80 & 90s and A Wisdom of Age is the result.

You've worn many hats — writer, broadcaster, advocate. How do these roles influence your storytelling?

I have thought about this a lot lately. I am writing a PhD on talkback radio and community formation, and realised in doing that work, that all of my hats are really just the same thing - they are the act of community storytelling and that to open up other people for their stories, I have to be willing to share mine.

If you could recommend one book that changed your life, what would it be — and why?

Monkey Grip - Helen Garner. This book made me long for the city I lived in. In the exposure of its grime and colour, Garner makes Melbourne one of the heroes of her book. I basically left home at 17 and lived in about 30 share houses, so this book was a huge influence on the way I eventually lived.

Cheltenham Library

Tuesday 1 July 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Join broadcaster and writer Jacinta Parsons for an inspiring author talk on A Wisdom of Age. Bookings required.

What role have libraries played in your own life — as a writer, a parent, or a reader?

Libraries change lives. I deeply believe this. Now, functioning as some of our last community hubs, libraries are the town square and a refuge. Without libraries, I wouldn't have had to opportunity as a writer to discuss the themes of my work to the extent that I have, and likely I wouldn't have written this last book. This has been one of the joyful parts of being a writer, is the chance to take the work and then discuss it and learn from others. And on another level, my local libraries are where I do a lot of my writing. I love being around other people who are working or reading or chatting with their friends, it helps me concentrate.
