WELCOME TO THE KINGS

elcome to our new season at the Kings. We have a fantastic selection of major touring theatre shows, hilarious comedy and a vibrant line-up of music, dance and cabaret for you during the rest of 2019 and into 2020. In December we will of course be presenting our famed panto, Aladdin starring Boyzone’s Shane Lynch, Phats & Small’s Ben Ofoedu, The Voice star Lucy Kane, and me as Widow Twankey. Expect laughter, music, audience interaction and a few surprises along the way. Tickets are flying (like the magic carpet) so book now for best seats. And don’t forget our other Christmas classics; Carols at the Kings, It’s A Wonderful Life and the That’ll be The Day Christmas Special. We’re thrilled to be able to offer you a stellar season of Theatre including a double bill celebrating the life and work of Agatha Christie. Firstly the longest running show in West End history (65 years and counting), The Mousetrap, starring Susan Penhaligon arrives in October and as part of a major UK tour in November Murder, Margaret and Me, starring Eastenders’ Lyn Blakely imagining what would have happened when Agatha Christie met the actress who portrayed her wonderful Miss Marple Margaret Rutherford. In the New Year celebrating 30 years in the West End we are hosting the classic stage chiller The Woman in Black. We’re in musical heaven bringing you a number of classics including the 30th anniversary tour of one of the West End’s longest running shows, Buddy The Musical. Other musical offerings include Friends The Parody Musical and the Ellen Kent Production of Madama Butterfly. Following the success of Bugsy Malone, the Kings Theatre will proudly present Annie The Musical during Easter 2020. A cracking Comedy season includes our very own Comedy at the Kings, hosted by local legend James Alderson and headlined by the fantastic Tom Stade. This is followed by 4 brilliant tv comedians: John Bishop, Russell Kane, Josh Widdicombe and the anarchic Dick and Dom. Looking ahead to what is coming to the Kings next Spring we’re delighted to welcome 2 shows on major UK tours: the stage adaptation of classic Comedy Some Mother’s Do ‘Ave ‘Em starring Joe Pasquale and Susie Blake and Boeing Boeing starring Tom Lister (Emmerdale) and Daniel Casey (Midsomer Murders).

As ever we have the cream of tributes including return visits from the fantastic Whitney Queen of the Night and Islands In The Stream celebrating the music of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Other artists appearing include Rocket Man bringing the music of Elton John to life in the very theatre where Elton performed Pinball Wizard for the film Tommy; fresh from London’s West End The Chicago Blues Brothers, The Magic of Michael Jackson, and Big Girls Don’t Cry recreating the classic sound of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Families are also well catered for this season with Channel 5 favourite Milkshake! LIVE opening the season of family shows along with a special afternoon performance of Ariana and JoJo – A tribute to Ariana Grande and JoJo. This is followed by Sing-along-a…The Greatest Showman an interactive ride through the smash hit family film, Tabby McTat , Zog, Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors and Awful Egyptians and Peppa Pig’s Best Day Ever packed full of songs, games and laughter. KONNECT is a brand new department within the Kings Theatre bringing together the Kings Youth Theatre, Community Engagement, Theatre volunteers, collation of our archives and our Tours and Talks. By combining these offerings and establishing a new umbrella department within the theatre, our aim is to enhance the Kings Theatre’s offerings to the community and help further enrich the city of Portsmouth. We will work with local creatives, inviting them to lead sessions, host workshops and collaborate with likeminded, passionate individuals thereby offering them work opportunities and networking facilities. The city of Portsmouth has a wealth of diversity and a broad spectrum of residents and visitors who we want to interact with the theatre, and we offer a variety of activities in addition to our theatre shows. KONNECT aims to bring projects directly to the residents of areas of our city that may never have been to the Kings or be aware of our work. Initiatives currently in planning include drama workshops and art projects with the aim that these activities will raise awareness of the theatre and create a stronger more positive relationship with all of our city’s residents. KONNECT will offer groups and classes, regular meetings, workshops and opportunities for community collaborations, opening the theatre’s doors to our regular patrons and welcoming new community groups, of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. KONNECT will work with schools, linking curriculum projects with Kings Theatre shows and encouraging more young people to visit the theatre and watch theatre performances. KONNECT will be launching a new community outreach programme working directly with local charities and organisations from all over the city to support the brilliant work they already do. KONNECT will continue to offer tours, talks and workshops that open the theatre’s doors to a wide range of ages, from our family friendly toddler tours, to our ‘Meet The Archivist’ historical coffee mornings led by our brilliant volunteers. The Kings Youth Theatre now boasts over 130 members and under the KONNECT umbrella, we will increase KYT’s offerings to other parts of the city, offering expert tuition led by specialist practitioners. KONNECT IS MORE THAN JUST A TITLE, KONNECT IS A MISSION STATEMENT. KONNECT, BECAUSE THEATRE IS FOR EVERYONE. For more information please email: konnect@kingsportsmouth.co.uk

THE KINGS THEATRE RE

Since my appointment as Chair of the Theatre 3 years ago, it has been my mission to transform the Kings into a vibrant and sustainable business that delivers top quality entertainment – and is welcoming to everyone. With this in mind we are seeking to regenerate the Albert Road side of the Kings and restore the footprint to the original intention of the famous theatre architect, Matcham and owner, JW Boughton.

Within this space we will create a cultural hub with new studio space, a gallery, and display areas for our archive. It will also allow us to develop further income streams with a food and drink offering, including a roof top bar, and hiring opportunities for rehearsals, meetings, and celebrations. An important outcome of this programme is to improve accessibility for all our patrons. We are very fortunate to have on board leading conservationist architect Giles Pritchard who is creating a model that gives us an active and dynamic place to be throughout the entire day and sympathetically preserves the beauty of our theatre. During 2018/2019 a considerable amount of work has been undertaken to create a feasibility study which details how the planned regeneration of the theatre can take place. We are very grateful to Portsmouth City Council who provided us with a significant grant to assist with the costs to produce this. The first presentation of our plans took place at our annual showcase evening on 24th June and we have now begun the consultation process with Historic England, Portsmouth City Council and the wider local community. Our vision is a bold one! We are confident that in partnership with Portsmouth City Council we will successfully manage the consultation process to enable the regeneration programme to come to life in the next two years, and in doing so underpin our long term future. Paul Woolf, Chair and CEO
