elcome to our bumper Winter/ Spring 2020 season here at the Kings Theatre. Our programme is jam packed full of the best West End musicals, plays, top comedy, dance and as ever the best in music tributes. We’re delighted to bring you a stellar line up of musicals including We Will Rock You, fresh from 11 years in the West End, Thriller Live, the 30 Anniversary tour of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, a trip through the 1960s with the new UK tour of Twist & Shout, laughs galore with Friends! The Parody Musical and Madama Butterfly from Ellen Kent Opera Company. Following the success of Bugsy Malone last year, this Easter the Kings Theatre presents Annie The Musical. Our plays offering includes West End frightener The Woman in Black, followed by Stephen Tompkinson (Drop the Dead Donkey, Ballykissangel, DCI Banks, Wild at Heart) in Willy Russell’s modern classic Educating Rita. We welcome back Tilted Wig productions with their new version of DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Su Pollard stars in Harpy by Philip Meeks in a Kings Theatre co-production that opens with us in Portsmouth and then goes on to tour the UK. Plus, don’t miss Joe Pasquale, Susie Blake and Sarah Earnshaw leading the cast in the stage version of iconic sitcom Some Mother’s Do ‘Ave ‘Em. Comedy is high on the agenda this season and includes Romesh Ranganathan, Jack Dee, Rob Beckett, Foil, Arms and Hog, our own Comedy at the Kings and the impro maestro’s Showstopper! The Improvised Musical.

For families we have Peppa Pig’s Best Day Ever, Sooty’s Magic Show and a family friendly matinee of The Showstopper’s Kids Show. From the prolific pen of Julia Donaldson we also welcome a new production, ZOG. This season we welcome two orchestras, the Chris Dean and Syd Lawrence Orchestra with an evening of swing and the Astor Big Band with The Glenn Miller Story. Our dance and cabaret programme brings you a quartet for Strictly fans: Kevin and Joanne Clifton in Burn The Floor, Aljaz and Janette present Remembering the Oscars, Giovanni Pernice returns with his new solo show and Craig Revel Horwood brings us his hilarious one man show All Balls and Glitter. Our cream of music tributes includes That’ll Be The Day, Radio Ga Ga, Abba Forever, Walk Right Back, Johnny Cash Roadshow and Seven Drunken Nights. We are delighted to welcome back Portsmouth Players with their production of Sweeney Todd. Along with shows from Artisan Theatre School, Gems Dance School, SD Studios, and Amy Hackett School of Dance. The BANFF Mountain Film Festival returns along with our post-Christmas adult panto, Peter Panties and we are thrilled to present an evening with Ben Fogle. Finally, we are excited to announce that our 2020 Panto, Peter Pan is now on sale starring Only Fools and Horses very own Boycie, John Challis as Captain Hook and Portsmouth icon... me, Jack Edwards as Mrs Smee.

Public parking is available at Waitrose on Marmion Road which is an 8-minute walk from the theatre. Waitrose, Marmion Rd, Portsmouth, PO5 2EJ

We are less than 5 miles from the M27 and A27 with several routes through Portsmouth available.

There is parking available on the residential streets surrounding the theatre but this is not guaranteed. Please note there are permit parking restrictions between 4:30pm - 6:30pm daily.

DISABLED PARKING There are two disabled parking bays to the left of the Stallsâ€™ Entrance on Albert Road. We are unable to reserve these spaces. Blue Badge holders can park on single/double yellow lines near the theatre (NOT in the loading bays) for a maximum of three hours. We cannot provide access for mobility scooters within the theatre or larger wheelchairs. For those wishing to travel to the theatre in a mobility scooter these would need to be left outside the building.

ACCESS INFORMATION The Kings Theatre is a Grade II* listed Edwardian Theatre. Level access is at Stalls level only. All other levels can only be accessed via stairs/steps. When married hairdresser Rita enrols on a university course to expand her horizons, little does she realise where the journey will take her. Her tutor Frank is a frustrated poet, brilliant academic and dedicated drunk who’s less than enthusiastic about taking Rita on but when these two people come together they soon realise how much they have to teach each other. This hilarious and heart-warming comedy won the Olivier Award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi-award-winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine. When revenge eludes him, Sweeney swears vengeance on the entire human race, murdering as many people as he can, while his business associate Mrs Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting public. Perhaps composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score, Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic and full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. It’s one of the significant achievements of the American musical theatre of the last fifty years, and it’s the high watermark of Sondheim’s six remarkable collaborations with director Harold Prince.
