I am over the moon to welcome you to the Kings Theatre for our very own Pompey Panto. It gives me immense pride to say that despite the challenges we have all faced this year, the Kings Team has refused to be defeated, and we along with our fabulous cast, and creative team have worked tirelessly to bring you this spectacular show. The Kings Theatre comes alive with an audience and without you the theatre would struggle even more during these uncertain times. A massive thank you goes to all the individuals and businesses who have supported us along the way – of which there are so many. We wish you all a wonderful Christmas and happy and healthy 2021, and hope to see you back soon. Enjoy the show! Paul Woolf, CEO

Dick Whittington AT THE KINGS THEATRE

Pantomime has been at the heart of the Kings Theatre since opening in 1907 when it put on Puss in Boots that Christmas. Dick Whittington was first performed in 1936 and has since appeared on stage a further seven times - most recently in 2002. Famous faces to tread the boards of this panto favourite include Lorraine Chase (in the title role of Dick), Fern Britton, Nicola Stapleton and Fawlty Towers’ hapless waiter Andrew Sachs! The tale of Dick Whittington and the pantomime we see today is the adventure of a poverty-stricken boy making his way to London to seek fame and fortune. In a story that dates back hundreds of years, it is loosely based on the real-life exploits of Richard Whittington (1354-1423), who did in fact become Mayor of London! However, unlike our pantomime hero, the original Dick did grow up with a reasonable amount of wealth, as the son of a squire (landowner) in Gloucestershire. Although the panto story of Dick Whittington working in the kitchens alongside a cat as his companion is unproven, the legacy of Richard Whittington is evident in the show. As a result of his career as a Mercer (a dealer in valuable cloth), marrying Alice – the daughter of a Sir, and becoming Mayor - he built up a fortune. In his will, Whittington left his entire wealth to the City of London to form a charity which is still recognised some 600 years later.
