Christmas and the festive season are not far away, and your Club has a lot happening for you, although it will be a far different experience than the one we had last year due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Especially in regards to dining with Taja Dining, the all new modern Asian dining area now open, and receiving great feedback from our members who are enjoying this new cuisine offering at the Club. Not taking away from Rations Café and Rations Dining, where the meals continue to be of the highest quality at a very affordable price and the Chefs fortnightly specials continue to offer members fresh and unique flavours. So, come down to the Club and enjoy your choice of two delectable eateries, given there is limited seating, it is wise to book ahead.

We have been pleased to see the large number of our members who are back frequenting the Club and taking advantage of the facilities and promotions that are on offer.

The solo musician is back on Friday nights, and the very popular Trivia is also back on Thursday night, see this issue of the Burst or check the Club’s website for what else is on at the Club.

We will be having our usual popular Christmas Ham Raffles, commencing Friday the 4th December and continuing for the following two Friday nights the 11th & 18th December respectively. Our Mega Meat & Seafood Raffle is set to be drawn on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24th December, just in time for Christmas Day celebrations.

We were pleased to welcome the State Member for Kogarah, Chris Minns MP and the State Member for Rockdale, Steve Kamper MP along with Councillor Liz Barlow from the Bayside Council to attend the Sub-Branch Remembrance Day Service and to lay wreaths. They took time out of their busy schedule to stay, have a cup of coffee and a chat with our Club CEO Ian Todd and myself, enjoying the opportunity to commemorate the day, and relax in the ambience of the Club’s veranda area. They were very complimentary of the support the Club gives to local community sporting groups and the Kingsgrove community in general.

The Club is still in discussion with Bayside Council in relation to the Club’s DA to extend the current balcony area to the stone wall, hopefully a resolution will be reached early in the New Year.

As we are coming to the end of another year, albeit under very trying circumstances the Club’s thanks go to the Sub-Branch, RSL Auxiliary, and the Kingsgrove RSL Community group for the very important roles, each have played, giving freely of their own time to cover all aspects of our community minded RSL Club.

Notice is hereby given that the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF MEMBERS OF THE KINGSGROVE RSL CLUB LIMITED will be held on the Club’s premises situated at Memorial Park, Brocklehurst Lane, Kingsgrove, on Tuesday 30th March 2021 at 7pm.

To maintain the high standard enjoyed in our Club, we request the dress rules be abided by at all times.

Notice of business and all resolutions proposed to be dealt with at the Annual General Meeting, shall be handed to the General Manager on or before 9th March 2021 and in the case of Special Resolutions on or before 2nd March 2021.

Appearance must be clean, neat and tidy at all times, obscene or offence language on clothing will not be tolerated at any time.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT We are coming to the end of the year and yet we are still having to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing government restrictions, but at least we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. We anticipate restrictions will be relaxed before Christmas however we will continue to ensure the safety of our members and employees.

Although the Club closed down for 70 days during the year, the Club has been able to contain the expenses and with the provision of government subsidies and the ongoing support of our members who have continued to frequent the Club, we have remained financial for the year.

You will notice in this edition of the Burst however, that many of our regular events and activities are sadly missing including our ever-popular Carols by Candlelight, the Senior Citizens Christmas lunch, the Stars Tribute dinner and show along with some of our regular promotions including the Members Badge Draw, 200 club and our yearly car giveaway for membership renewals.

All of these changes are a testament that life as we know it will probably never completely return to normal, but you have my assurance that as restrictions are lifted, we will endeavour to return as many of our usual favourites to the members when possible to ensure we offer our members a variety of entertainment on all levels.

On a brighter note some of our favourites are already back for members to enjoy including, bingo, trivia, poker and our fill the fridge raffle every Friday night.

Our Christmas Ham Raffles are on with 101 ½ leg hams being given away on Friday 4th December and again on Friday 11th December and 48 ½ leg hams and a mega meat raffle on Friday 18th December totalling 250 hams over 3 weeks. Tickets are only $1.00 and are on sale from 3pm. Draw to commence at 5.30pm. Tickets for the ham raffles will also be available online for members happier to win from home.

Thursday 24th December will see our Seafood raffle take place in time for Christmas Tickets are $1.00 and are on sale from 4.30pm. Draw to commence at 5.30pm to win an array 4

Thursday 31st December see in 2021 in style here at Kingsgrove RSL with good food, good wine and great entertainment from Time Out Duo as we count down to the New Year. Tickets are $45 and seating will be limited.

Join us to celebrate the Australia Day on Tuesday 26th January with a free sausage sizzle, live entertainment, Happy Hour prices all day, special BBQ lunch and a mega meat raffle to win an assortment of great prizes.

Christmas Day Although so much has had to be placed on hold due to the government restriction in place, Kingsgrove RSL Club will open its doors on Christmas Day for the first time to welcome our members to enjoy a succulent three course meal for lunch and dinner. There will be 3 sessions to choose from and bookings are essential.

The Club will be open from 11am till late. Please check reception or the website for a full Christmas menu and all Club details.

Membership Subscriptions The Board of Directors have approved the cessation of membership subscriptions for 2021, providing all members with another year on their current membership. All members will need to see reception on their next visit to update the current membership card and receive your Bonus Pack for 2021.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas to Alan Barnes and the Board of Directors, to Peter Merlino and Peter Burgess and the Sub Branch Committee, to the Ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary, to the members of the Kingsgrove RSL Club Ltd Community Group, to all the Sporting Club committees, Kul KC and the Taja staff.

EPIC CHOCOLATE TRIFLE Chocolate mousse, brownie & dulce de leche.

METHOD STEP 1 For the mousse, whisk the yolks and sugar together until pale, thick and doubled in volume. In a pan on a medium heat, gently heat the milk and cream until steam begins to appear. Remove from the heat and – whisking as you go – very gradually pour in the yolk mixture.

STEP 2 Pour back into the pan and cook on a low heat for 6–8 minutes, stirring continuously. Using a sugar thermometer, simmer until it reaches 83ºC

STEP 10 Finish the trifle with any remaining bits of brownie, and decorate with marshmallows and caramel popcorn, if you like, then serve. Sparkler optional!

CLUBGRANTS SHOWCASE FOR 2020 KINGSGROVE RSL CLUB AWARDED $130,666 IN COMMUNITY FUNDING TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS THROUGH THE CLUBGRANTS SCHEME THIS YEAR. EACH RECIPIENT RECEIVED FUNDS FROM $50 UP TO $10,000 TO PUT TOWARD PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES ADDRESSING COMMUNITY NEEDS, LOCAL ISSUES, AND TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND GROW SOCIAL CONNECTIONS. “The ClubGRANTS program is an exceptional opportunity for our Club to work with local community organisations to improve our community life and offer necessary services to the residents of Kingsgrove and our local government areas said Kingsgrove RSL Club CEO Mr Ian Todd.

Mr Todd officially announced the list of 41 recipients who would receive funding from the Club on 29th August 2020 via email, without its usual presentation ceremony due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Showcased below are details of how two of the recipients used their funding to improve our community wellbeing and achieve social change.

St George Children with Disabilities Fund Inc received $8,000 in funding from the Club for their Music Therapy program; a life enhancing provision for children with severe disabilities.

The Music Therapy program does not receive any government funding, and the cost of private music therapy for these children is beyond the means of most of the families who need it. The program is delivered by a professional musician with experience and expertise in working with students with severe and multiple disabilities.

How does Music Therapy help?

• At the St George School where the students have significant learning needs due to physical and multiple disabilities, Music Therapy gives them the ability to learn and communicate through music and musical instruments.

• At the Bates Drive School, it is helping to build relationships as well as students’ creative expression; it increases their focus and releases stress as well as unlocking their hidden potential and capabilities.

• At the Cainsfoot School it has significantly benefitted both teachers and students. Teachers are now incorporating music into their daily routine to support students to further engage in learning, as students’ level of engagement in group and social activities has increased due to the program.

• At the St George Hospital School, it is helping the

students to re-engage and re-connect. It provides learning, enjoyment and distraction to children who are at their most vulnerable.

With measurable educational and social benefits for students, as well as bringing the sheer pleasure and enjoyment of music to their lives. The program has become centric to all families with children who participate, they have benefited in their day to day life from the children’s opportunity to learn and communicate through music.

“Thanks to member support and patronage at the Club, we have been able to donate to this great not for profit organisation in their fundraising efforts to reach $90,000 annually, funding the Music Therapy program in all four of the schools, supported by the St George Children with Disabilities Fund.” said Mr Ian Todd Mr Garry Morris OAM and trustee of the St George Children with Disabilities Fund Inc said “We are grateful to Kingsgrove RSL Club for their support, which helped fund the Music Therapy program for 2020, it has not only benefited the children’s learning, the program has also given the students the opportunity to shine and enjoy life.”

Greek Eatery said that “without the generous support of Kingsgrove RSL Club, “The Greek Eatery” would not have been nearly as successful. All the profits from our business venture and fundraising efforts are going to the Ursuline Sisters in Cambodia, in their support of the Mother of Peace Primary School, a school dedicated to offering the children of Chrab Viel better opportunities for their future. We are extremely thankful for Kingsgrove RSL Club’s contribution, and truly appreciate the Club’s generosity. Once again, thank you ALL!” “The ClubGRANTS program, underpinned by our Club’s member patronage, has been able to empower local students to not just engage in their education, but to also support community well-being and participate in global social change at a truly grassroots level. We are so happy to see that a small amount of money can be stretched in innovative ways to positively impact so many in our local and global communities." said Mr Ian Todd.

Year 10 Commerce students from St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove received $500 in funding from the Club for their “Running a Business” program.

The program required the students to create their own catering business aimed to raise money to support the work of the Ursuline Sisters in Cambodia.

In order to raise money and make a profit, the students volunteered their time out of school hours to prepare for their catering business “The Greek Eatery”. The students worked to negotiate for supplies and donations from organisations such as Kingsgrove RSL Club, to purchase all the items necessary to run their business.

With the $500 Kingsgrove RSL Club kindly donated, “The Greek Eatery” purchased fresh vegetables for their Greek salad and tzatziki, as well as packaging and cutlery. Catering to the 170+ students and teachers, who bought pre-packed meals through the “The Greek Eatery” stall, following St Ursula’s yearly 6km Walkathon.

“The Greek Eatery” students were able to make over $1200 in profits to send to the Ursuline Sisters in Cambodia. Selling delicious chicken/ lamb souvlaki meals and collecting all money left over from the donations.

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENT Christmas and the festive season will soon be upon us, and as I ask, at this time each year, please spare a thought and a prayer for our many service men and women who are serving overseas and will not be home with their family and friends at this special time of the year.

We were pleased to have held a Remembrance Day Service on Sunday the 8th November at the Club, albeit held under Government COVID-19 restrictions, adhering to the social distancing requirements. Unfortunately, this meant that the TS Sirius Cadets, the 233 St George Army Cadet Unit, the Sutherland Shire Band and the Sing Australia Choir Ashbury were not able to attend. We were however, pleased to have the State Member for Kogarah Chris Minns MP and the State Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper MP along with Councillor Liz Barlow from Bayside Council lay wreaths on behalf of the residents.

A Remembrance Day wreath was laid at the Club’s new WW1 Memorial, this memorial replaced the original Honour Roll that was at the Kingsgrove Public School Caroline Street Campus that disappeared many years ago. This is the only WW1 Memorial in Kingsgrove, listing the names of those men from Kingsgrove and surrounds who served in the Great War. It is well worth taking a moment to read the fifty-four (54) names listed on the Honour Roll, as there are a number, where more than one family member served. The Parkes family, where four served with two being killed in action, while

the Townsends, a father and son, had the father killed in action.

The Sub-Branch has re-commenced holding our bimonthly meetings, with the next meeting set for Monday 21st December. Come along and join your mates for our Christmas meeting, dinner and refreshments will be provided at the end of the meeting.

Your Sub-Branch co-hosted a Far Southern Metropolitan District Council meeting (FSMDC) with Belfield RSL SubBranch on Thursday 5th November, with forty (40) attendees from the various member Sub-Branches. It was a successful meeting with considerable discussion on the current NSW RSL election.

Our thanks to Sarah Mezentsef from the Club’s office for all the assistance she provided for the Remembrance Day and FSMDC Meeting.

To all our Sub-Branch and RSL Auxiliary members and your families, may you all have a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, we can only hope that they will invent a vaccine soon to stop this COVID-19 virus in the new year and we can resume our normal lives.

COMMUNITY GROUP Despite COVID-19 restrictions and isolation these past nine months, the ladies of the Kingsgrove RSL Community Group continued to be busy creating gifts for seniors in our area. There has even been some people who have rung, to get (paid) special orders done for them, and we appreciate creating these, as the money raised all go to our community outreach programs and good causes. Don’t hesitate to call us for any special orders.

We are organising over 500 gifts for five nursing homes (Fairmont Aged Care, Saint George Aged Care, Estia – Bexley Park Aged Care, Casa Mia Aged Care – Padstow, Southhaven Aged Care – Padstow).

The gifts consist of a mixture of knitted and crocheted bags, with varied items to go in to them. Items range from fingerless

gloves, soap, coat hangers, washers, jewellery, hand towels and some personal items like razors, shaving brushes and cream, deodorant etc. I am sure whatever the residents receive they will be grateful.

At this point, we are hoping to be able to deliver the gifts personally, as we do not want the residents to think we have forgotten them during these tough, isolating times. However, if we cannot do this, we will leave the gifts at the receptions for the residents to enjoy for the festive season. We visited two new nursing homes before COVID-19 restrictions, but were not able to deliver anything to them, so hopefully these Christmas visits will provide the first time for them to receive gifts from us this year.

Sadly, we could not hold our usual end of year Seniors Christmas Luncheon, and we’ve also had to cancel our craft days at one of the nursing homes. I am sure the residents are missing these days and the luncheon as much as we are.

With a bit of luck that will change next year.

As you can see the ladies have been keeping busy and would like to thank the Club for supporting us throughout this turbulent year. Well done on managing COVID 19, as you all have done well. Hopefully the New Year will bring better times, where we can all catch up socially once more.

From all of us ladies we would like to wish the Club’s Board of Directors, Management and Staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope 2021 is a better year for all of us.

AUXILIARY Since our report in the last Burst magazine the Father’s Day raffle has been Drawn. Thank you to all involved; whether you bought tickets, volunteered your time to sell tickets or donated and prepared the gifts. We raised just over $1000, that is being distributed to the charities that support present and ex-servicemen. I hope all the winners enjoyed their prizes.

The ladies are now busy with our Christmas raffle, please support us once more, and buy a ticket or two, and go in the draw to sort out your own Christmas gift list.

It has been very pleasant to be out of isolation, more sociable and able to enjoy our monthly Auxiliary meetings. If anyone would be interested in joining us on the fourth Monday of each month, please enquire at the Club reception, and they will assist you in contacting us.

S P O R T S A D M I N I S T R AT O R With the easing of the social distancing restrictions, most of our Sporting Clubs are back enjoying their sporting competitions, except, for our snooker Club who have temporarily been unable to play due to the Club’s Sport Lounge being used for our gaming Machines. Even though for most of the Sporting Clubs, member numbers are down, members are gradually returning, hopefully by next year, all will be back to normal.

Congratulations to members of our Darts Club, who are competing in the Grand Finals of the local Inter-Club competition, which you can read about in their report. The Darts Club’s weekly social competition is also continuing with a lot of fun had by all.

If you are considering joining one of our Sporting Club’s, the New Year is the best time to join. Just ask Club reception and they will arrange contact with the Sports Club/s you wish to join.

K I N G S G ROV E RS L S P O RT I N G C LU BS FISHING CLUB 2020 has been an abysmal year. If it wasn’t the bushfires at the beginning of the year, it was COVID-19 restrictions. As the restrictions were lifted later in the year, we were able to reshuffle the fishing calendar, however there were high winds, dangerous oceans and again we were unable to get out and fish. When we organised to get away from the craziness and fish in the Shoalhaven surrounds in August, there was flooding in the area; again, we couldn’t fish. Suffice to say, we haven’t fished much this year and have had very little to weigh in.

Fishing charters held throughout the year were again popular. The last charter was held on the 3rd October with Fish Finder Charters, 13 year old George Braithwaite outclassed everyone on the day, weighing in a 1.8kg snapper (his personal best). There were large pods of dolphins

and whales seen, making for an exciting day, photos and commentary from the day have been posted on KRSL Fishing Club’s Facebook page.

Fishing Club Life members (Jim Hall, Bill Hall & Trevor Judge) chose a non-calendar week in October (fortunately with good weather) and fished in Shoalhaven waters, managing to “bag out” on Luderick. Jim Fisher and 10 mates fished in Lake Eucumbene and surrounds, a large number of Trout were caught and distributed to all.

Our AGM will be held from 6.30pm on Tuesday 1st December whereby a new committee will be elected and financials discussed. I venture to say that if our poor farmers in the country need water, to sow their crops around the 2021 fishing club calendar (to be distributed at the AGM); it’ll be sure to rain.

On behalf of the Fishing Club committee & its members, I would like to thank the Kingsgrove RSL Club’s CEO Ian Todd and management, for their assistance to us throughout this year. I would also like to thank and congratulate the Board of Directors for the hard-economic decisions that have been made during this crazy COVID-19 climate – it’s great to see that Kingsgrove RSL Club has “come out the other side”.

DARTS CLUB As I begin my report, I have sad news to announce; one of our long-time playing members Olidia Viglino has passed away. Olidia was 91 and had been in a nursing home for a few months prior to her death on September 30th 2020. She won many trophies and became the Women’s Champion many times during her playing years with us.

She also played competitively and won many Women’s Champion Trophies for the Kingsgrove RSL Darts Club at the St. George and Sutherland Darts Association competitions.

Our B Grade competition team, which consists of 5 members, did very well. They were leading the competition and did not have to play in the semi-finals, as there are only 3 teams in the B Grade competition.

The team came just short of winning in the Grand Final at Kingsgrove RSL Club on November 4th 2020, against Miranda RSL. We’d like to congratulate the team on their efforts as runners-up.

We are hoping to get two B Grade teams together for our next round of competitions in 2021. So, if you would like to join the Darts Club and have some fun, or join our teams and play competitively, come down and see us on Friday nights from 7.30pm or leave your name at Club reception and we will get in contact with you.

The B Grade Champion Day was held at Kingsgrove RSL Club on Sunday 1st November 2020 at 1.30pm.

Congratulations to runner-up Alex Burns from the Kingsgrove RSL Dart Club, for giving winner Andrew Davis from Miranda RSL, a run for his money, great effort!

We are still having fun nights once a month, with $5 vouchers given out to both a lady and a gentleman each time. We also give out a $5 free entry to Friday night session to one of our members. Our last fun night was a celebration of Halloween, and we are looking forward to our final Christmas themed fun night on November 27th, where all members will receive a merry gift.
