PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to our winter edition of the Burst, check out the numerous promotions and events listed that are on at your Club over the next four months, so take a break bring the family to the Club and enjoy what the Club has to offer.

The Club’s two food outlets are enjoying very good patronage, Rations Café & Dining is doing exceptionally well with its varied menu of western food, can I suggest you check out the weekly specials; Jade Palace continues to be the destination for our members wanting to have delicious Asian cuisine, the meals get my tick of approval.

The Club has decided to run a mid-year membership giveaway, included in the draw is a 2019 Mazda 2 Maxx - Hatch, as well as Cash prizes, starting in June with the total value of the promotion up to $30,000, full details are in the Burst and on our website.

ANZAC Day was a great success, with a large crowd of members and guests attending the service and the breakfast, thanks go to the Clubs CEO Ian Todd, the Management Team and our tremendous staff, they ensured that everyone who visited the Club had an enjoyable day. Special thanks to the Women’s Auxiliary for the marvellous job they did in serving the breakfast.

Our Mother’s Day promotion was a great success with the two breakfast sittings in the Diggers Lounge catered by Jade Palace, being fully booked, and both Rations Dining and Jade Palace enjoying large bookings for their exclusive lunch and dinner offerings. Don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 1st September 2019, I would suggest you book early if you want to get a table.

The strategic plan to enhance our offering to members in relation to adding a deck to the veranda and a kid’s outdoor play area is still in progress, the Club is currently waiting on a response to the proposal from Bayside Council.

The merger discussions the Club Board is having with Bexley RSL Board as per the notice posted on the Clubs notice board and mentioned in the last edition of the Burst are progressing well, we will have an update for the members in the near future.

ANZAC Day was again very well patronised by our members and the community with over six hundred attending the march, service and attending breakfast after the event. This year your Club promoted the Respect the Day campaign to remind people of the significance of ANZAC Day. It was rewarding to see the number of people attend and reflect on the importance and significance of Anzac Day in our history and our future.

My thanks to the Sub Branch members, Ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary, my staff and you the members for making this day memorable.

Last year we sponsored local student Tara Samuels to participate in the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge and embark on a journey of the Kokoda Trek. At a recent meeting of the Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch Tara presented a genuine and honest account of the trek highlighting the difficulties she faced and how rewarding the experience was for her. We wish Tara all the best with her new adventures and your Club will continue to seek to sponsor more students to participate in KYLC. Our huge Christmas in July ham raffle will be held on Friday 19th July with seventy-five (75) half hams on offer. Great value at only $1 for six numbers.

We are now into the winter months and our new menu at Rations Dining reflects those warm winter dishes. Be sure to check out the new menu and watch for the ever-popular weekly specials.

It is with pleasure we welcome back a new member of the management team with the recent commencement of Ryan Kavanagh. Ryan was a former employee at Kingsgrove RSL before embarking on a management career spaning over ten years at other Clubs and now returns as the Food and Beverage manager at your Club. We look forward to working with Ryan and providing wider varieties for our members.

I wish to personally thank all for the support and condolences expressed to me and my family with the recent passing of my mother. It is times like this that you acknowledge and appreciate the unique communal support of our Club.

2019 CLUB ANZAC DAY As the sun rose on April 25, thousands of Australians headed out in the cold to pay their respects.

We had Kingsgrove RSL Club members, patrons and local community come out in the hundreds this year to watch and participate in the annual march. The assembly was filled with war heroes or their loved ones, marching in their honour, from the corner of Kingsgrove Rd and Shaw St, through to the Kingsgrove RSL Club’s cenotaph in Kingsgrove Memorial Park, for our ANZAC day service, we paused and remembered those who went to war for us.

As the sun got higher, everyone was invited to enjoy a fabulous breakfast provided by the Club and served up by the Kingsgrove RSL Club Women’s Auxiliary.

And then as the day warmed up, we began to tell or hear tales of years gone by and maybe join in a bit of two-up.

It’s a time-honoured tradition to mark the first landing of the “diggers” at Anzac Cove on April 25, 1915.

Twenty thousand Australian soldiers landed just before dawn on the Gallipoli peninsula. By nightfall, 747 of those soldiers would lie dead on the beach or close by in the surrounding steep cliffs.

The Gallipoli campaign claimed the lives of 8000 Australian soldiers; in all, more than 60,000 Australians died during World War I. Anzac Days remembers their courage and valour.

Lest we forget.

Sticky Date PUDDING

PREP: 15 MINS | COOK: 35 MINS | TOTAL: 50 MINS

INGREDIENTS • 280g pitted dates, roughly chopped • 1 tsp baking soda / bi carb soda • 1 cup / 250 ml boiling water • 40g / 1/4 cup brown sugar, loosely packed • 80g / 6 tbsp unsalted softened butter • 2 eggs, at room temperature

• 1 1/4 cups / 185 g plain flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE: • 200 g/ 1 1/4 cups brown sugar , loosely packed • 375 ml / 1 1/2 cups thickened cream • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 70 g / 5 tbsp. unsalted butter

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180C (standard) or 160C (fan/ convection).

2. Grease 7 pudding moulds with butter 3. Place dates in a bowl, sprinkle over baking soda and pour over boiling water.

Stand 10 minutes, then mash well with a potato masher (or fork) until it resembles sloppy porridge.

4. In a separate bowl create batter; place butter and sugar. Beat until combined and smooth.

5. Then add eggs into batter and continue to beat until incorporated.

6. Add flour and baking powder into the batter, mix until flour is incorporated.

7. Now Add dates mixture into the batter and mix quickly until dates are well incorporated into the batter.

8. Pour batter into pudding moulds, only fill 2/3 of the way up.

9. Bake for 25 minutes, or until skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE: 10. Place ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Once butter is melted, stir, then bring to simmer.

Simmer for 2 minutes, stirring once, then remove from heat. Serve warm.

11. While still hot, poke about 10 holes on the surface of the pudding. Spoon over 1tbsp of Butterscotch Sauce per Pudding. Leave to soak 10 minutes.

12. Turn pudding moulds upside down on serving plate. Serve warm with ice cream or cream and remaining warm sauce.

Well can you believe we are already over half way through 2019?

In March we enjoyed another successful Crazy Whist Night. Do come and join us for the next one to be held in the Diggers Lounge on Tuesday July 16th at 7pm.

In early April the pupils from the local Schools celebrated ANZAC Day at the club where they explained to attendees many of the traditions associated with the commemoration, e.g. Reciting the Ode, the Last Post, Wearing a Red Poppy.

In May the Women’s Auxiliary attended the Club’s service to commemorate the Battle of the Coral Sea. After, we enjoyed a delicious luncheon in the Diggers Lounge. Over the few weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, The ladies from the Auxiliary assisted the Club by selling tickets for the Mother’s Day Raffle. I hope the winners enjoyed their prizes.

GOLF CLUB REPORT

With the first signs of winter, nights and mornings getting colder and indoor sports are definitely looking more appealing for some. However, for those that enjoy the freshness of the outdoor conditions such as the Golf and Fishing Club members this just adds to the challenge.

My how time fly’s nearly half the year gone and we are into the next Burst report so without further delay I’ll bring you up to date with a few of the rounds played so far..

By the time you read this report the Fishing Club Round Robin will have been held with the event being cancelled twice already this year due to bad weather - hopefully it will be third time lucky.

The results of this event along with the Round Robin results will be revealed at our Stars Tribute night on Saturday 30th November when the Harry Fanning Trophy will be presented to the winning Sporting Club of the Round Robin events.

The remainder of the Round Robin Competition, that is the Darts, Snooker & Golf, are scheduled for Tuesday 23rd July at 7:00pm and will be conducted in the Diggers and the Sports Lounges. This should be a fun night with some fierce competition. You are welcome to drop by the Diggers and Sport Lounges to watch the events and cheer on the participants.

SNOOKER CLUB REPORT The Snooker club’s Friday night competition is still going strong with an average of 16 players per week. Membership is now at 38 financial members and growing.

We held a extraordinary general meeting to vote on changes to our constitution in May, (which were passed unanimously) we also nominated one of our long time members for life membership. Mr Bob McGuire ( The Magician) has been a member of the RSL for 35 years and the Snooker club for 20 years, in that time he has held many positions, including Secretary, Treasurer and committeeman. He continues to be an asset to the club and we congratulate him on this appointment.

In closing I would like to thank the Club and directors for their continued support and invite any Club member to join us on a Friday night, which commences at 6pm.

DA RTS C LU B R E P O RT There has been a good roll up on Friday nights to our Social Darts. If you would like to play and have some fun, come and join us for only $4.00 a night. You are most welcome! We have fun nights every now and then, where we change the boards around.

At Easter we had a gift for each member who showed up and on Mother’s Day we had a gift for all the women who attended on the night and a major prize to the winner of a Mother’s Day raffle draw.

The two competition teams A Grade and B Grade playing in the St. George and Sutherland Shire Darts Competition, played hard this season, and B grade made a great effort to be eligible for the semi finals and finals held in the end of May. Good luck to both teams for the rest of the year.

Our Club darts championship is held over two weekends, end of July and beginning of August. This is a championship where there is a singles for men and women, doubles for men and women, mixed doubles and an open championship. Good luck to everyone who enters this event.

FISHING CLUB REPORT Due to hideous weather, the Round Robin had been cancelled twice.

A new date is being planned by our committee – sporting groups and management will be notified, once finalised.

Thank you to our Vice President (Frank) for organising 16 fishing club members/ guests to attend the ANZAC Cabaret Dinner on 13th April.

Attendees had a great time and are looking forward to KRSL’s Christmas in July.

A sensational day of fishing on board the About You Fishing Charter Boat from Gunnamatta Bay wharf. Thank you to Skipper Ben Walker for hosting members of Kingsgrove RSL Fishing Club. We look forward to 2020 and another day of fishing with you. Our members new and old had good fish catches and also experienced numerous sightings of Humpback

Whales near to us on the boat. After setting out at 5.00am there were quite a few of us looking forward to putting our feet up at home.

The weather gods have not been very kind to us for the first quarter of the year. Fingers and everything else crossed, we get to attend the rest of the Fishing Club’s calendar outings on: • • • •

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENTS REPORT Unfortunately, the long dry spell of weather continues for just about all of New South Wales and Queensland however it had a bright side with beautiful weather for ANZAC Day which resulted in a very large attendance of marchers and families attending the service and the breakfast that followed.

The Sutherland Shire Silver Band led the march with the 233 St George Cadet Unit providing the Guard and Catafalque party.

Our Parade Marshall, Sub-Branch Vice President Phil Pollard kept the marchers in order. There was a good number of spectators lining the March route applauding all the participants.

A special applause was given to the SubBranch members riding in the 1928 Chevrolet and the 1920 Dodge that were provided and driven by Club Director Michael Bougoukas and his son Ross, thanks guys, it really is appreciated by those who cannot complete the march on foot.

The Sub-Branches, new Secretary Peter Merlino once again did a good job with the MC duties, the Sing Australia Ashbury Choir participated in their first ANZAC Day at Kingsgrove and were great, and the Reverend Timothy Mildenhall gave a very insightful ANZAC Day Address. The Reverend David Wallace and Reverend Tevita Siuhengalu also assisted in the service.

A special mention must be made of the rendition of the New Zealand National Anthem in Maori and English by Christen De Thierry who wore a traditional Kaka Hu (cloak) thank you Christen. I’m sure this along

with the recognition that we give to the New Zealanders on this special day has meant that there are more New Zealanders attending this service every year.

Bayside Council Councilor Liz Barlow, and Acting Superintendent Craig James of the St George Area Command were amongst the dignitaries who laid wreaths. Our friends from Kingsgrove Bus Depot provided buses for the members to go into town for the march and thanks to the Police from the local Hurstville area command who did traffic control. It was great to see so many of the Police come into the Club for some well earnt breakfast.

The Women’s Auxiliary did a marvelous job as they have done for so many years giving up their time to assist the staff in setting up the Diggers Lounge, serve a very welcome breakfast to the many participants including the scout and guide groups who attended the service.

The success of ANZAC Day would not be possible without the assistance and organizing skills of the CEO Ian Todd and the Management Team with our very willing and friendly staff, they all ensured it was an enjoyable day for everyone who was at the Club.

The Sub-Branch Committee conducted over fifteen (15) ANZAC Day services at local nursing homes, schools and preschools. The Combined Schools ANZAC Day Ceremony was held at the Club and again a great success with twelve (12) local schools participating in this very special service which the students conduct themselves.

Sunday 5th of May was the date for our Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration Service, with the cadets from TS Sirius providing the Catafalque Party and Guard. Our guest speaker CPOET Ron Palmer gave a very interesting address, we had representatives attending from the following Sub Branches, Belfield, Belmore, Bankstown, Campsie, Canterbury Hurlstone Park, and Padstow Your Sub-Branch representatives have attended FSMDC meetings at Ingleburn RSL, Bankstown RSL and Campsie RSL so far this year. Kingsgrove Sub-Branch in conjunction with Belfield Sub-Branch will be hosting the next FSMDC Meeting on the 18th July.

The next Sub-Branch Commemoration Service and lunch will be VP Day to be held on Sunday 11th August, and followed by Remembrance Day on November 10th, medals to be worn, tickets are made available at reception.

COMMUNITY GROUP REPORT Our luncheon in March for the nursing homes went well and our Easter gift delivery to them in April had them all wanting to see the Easter bunny. As we hopped around to all the rooms we had a few residents following us, not sure if they thought they would get another egg. Sorry everyone, one per person.

We are still doing our craft days once a month at Bexley Park (Estia) nursing home and the 22

residents look forward to us coming to them. In April we did Easter cards and in May we will do bracelets and necklaces. At this stage June and July are surprises so you will have to wait to see what we come up with for the day.

We are hoping to hold another Bunnings BBQ day but are waiting for confirmation on the date. Keep looking for information on this at the Club.
