Former US Vice President Dick Cheney remembered in Tiernaboul The life and legacy of former US Vice President Dick Cheney, who passed away this week aged 84, were remembered in Tiernaboul, Killarney where a local family shares an ancestral link with the Cheney line.

The Moriarty family, well-known in the Killarney area, have long spoken of their distant connection to the former American statesman through their grandmother, Debbie O’Callaghan (née O’Brien). Debbie was related to the Naughton family in Kilorglin, as was the late Mr Cheney, creating a genealogical link between the families.

The Moriarty family includes Radio Kerry’s Sounds Country presenter Dermot Moriarty, his brother, Mike Moriarty of Central Car Sales in Farranfore, and another brother, Pat, a former publican in the area and their sister Kathleen.

Dermot recalled that on the day Cheney was elected Vice President in 2000, a reporter from RTÉ in Cork travelled to

Tiernaboul to speak with the family and trace the full Irish connection of the man who would go on to become one of the most influential figures in US politics.

Cheney’s career spanned decades at the highest levels of American govern-

ment. He served as a congressman, White House Chief of Staff, Secretary of Defence under President George H.W. Bush, and later as Vice President to George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009.

His death this week prompted tributes

across the political spectrum in the United States, while in Killarney, the Moriarty family fondly remembered the unusual moment when their quiet corner of Kerry briefly became part of a global political story.

Gardai report quiet Halloween night Loreto families

Killarney Gardaí have reported a relatively quiet Halloween night this year, with incidents of anti-social behaviour limited to a short period between 6pm and 8pm, a noticeable improvement on previous years.

One bonfire in a local housing estate had to be attended to by Killarney Fire and Rescue Service, assisted by Gardaí and was safely extinguished without any major issues.

Aside from that, Gardaí dealt with a

small number of minor incidents, including some egg-throwing and the use of illegal fireworks, but overall, the night passed off without serious incident.

Killarney Gardaí also distanced themselves from a video circulating online that allegedly showed a Garda van being hit with eggs while a car performed handbrake turns nearby.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell said: “This could have been Dublin, Limerick, who knows, but it was certainly not Killarney, despite what some online commentary suggested. There were no serious incidents reported all night, and any incidents that did occur were at the lower end of the spectrum.”

Chamber to host cyber security breakfast briefing Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce will host its next Members’ Breakfast on Wednesday, November 19, focusing on the increasingly important topic of cyber security.

The members event will take place from 7.45am to 9.00am at The Brasserie in the International Hotel,. Attendance costs €10, payable at the door on the

morning.

Guest speakers for the morning will be Mike Dennehy, IT Manager at Tricel Group, and Ger McAuliffe, a Cyber Security and Infrastructure Manager. Both will share practical advice and insights on how businesses can strengthen their cyber defences and reduce vulnerability to online threats.

According to the Chamber, the briefing aims to help local businesses understand how to improve cyber resilience by em-

powering staff to be the first line of defence.

“This event will provide a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing, discussion, and networking,” said a Chamber spokesperson. “Cyber attacks can affect businesses of all sizes, so raising awareness and improving preparedness is essential.”

meet Council over eviction notices The local families, who are living in the Loreto Convent estate and facing eviction, are meeting with Kerry County Council this week, the Killarney Advertiser understands. Residents met with the Council’s Housing department on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

As of publication, residents were unable to comment until all meetings had taken place. It emerged last month that 14 families in the estate are facing homelessness after receiving letters from Cypriot-based landlord Xerico Ltd. The affected families, comprising of more than 40 people including schoolchildren, infants and people with disabilities, appealed to Kerry County Council for assistance. They pleaded with the council to consider schemes such as tenant-in-situ purchase, an Approved Housing Body partnership or any other available schemes that could help in securing accommodation locally.

Tricel founders Con and Anne Stack to be honoured with Order of Innisfallen

Start small and think big was always the motto of Con and Anne Stack who saw their company grow from a small operation in a shed in their back garden to a multi-national enterprise that now employs over 600 people.

That remarkable success story is to be recognised in their hometown of Killarney in the coming weeks when they are inducted into the Order of Inisfallen, the most prestigious honour the town can bestow.

Con, originally from Moyvane, initially served an apprenticeship in a knife-making factory in Germany, followed by a managerial role in a US multinational in Shannon. He moved to Killarney in February 1969 to take up the role as manager of Ross Products, a company that specialised in the manufacture of cardboard boxes, on Lewis Road.

He soon identified a market for cutting-edge fibre glass and glass reinforced products, with no capital required, and he operated from a shed at his home, with his Ballyduff native wife, Anne (née Leahy) by his side and playing her part.

Very soon an opportunity arose to create a product for the then thriving Pretty Polly factory in Killarney, and Con spotted a requirement to manufacture fibre glass water tanks to replace galvanised steel models which were experiencing problems with rust.

BUILDING BOATS

He instantly built up a rapport with local companies like MD O’Shea & Sons and O’Callaghan Plumbing, as well as building boats for anglers, and to cater for a rapidly growing market, in 1973, Killarney Plastics was born.

Son Michael, remembers his mum dropping the five children to school before spending the day working alongside Con and, when school finished, they all made their way to their base in St Mary’s Terrace before being brought home to do their homework and have dinner.

Con left his post in Ross Products in 1980 and his company moved operations to an IDA-supported, purpose-built unit, before the growth and the need became such that the current Tricel plant in the Ballyspillane Industrial Estate was developed.

The remarkable dedication shown and groundwork put in by Con and Anne Stack in the early days paid handsome dividends as Killarney Plastics became a key part of global engineering company Tricel.

From humble beginnings, it evolved into a family-led global provider, delivering performance and innovation-driven solutions across the water, environmental, construction and distribution industries.

Tricel develops, manufactures and distributes an extensive range of innovative products mainly across Ireland, France, Denmark and the UK and it provides specialist services to customers in over 50 countries worldwide.

600 PLUS EMPLOYEES

With 14 companies within the group it currently employs 620 people, 200 of

whom are based in Killarney.

Con and Anne remained full-time in the business until they passed it on to their children, who are masterminding a very successful future for one of the great Killarney business success stories.

Now enjoying their retirement, they are secure in the knowledge that their lifetime of work is in good hands and that family remains the key to success. They have four sons, Michael, Con, Richard and Robert and a daughter Graine.

The Order of Inisfallen is a civic honour – a joint initiative between Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and

Kerry County Council – that recognises those who have made exceptional contributions to the local economy and to the tourism industry.

Previous recipients have included former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Charles, King of England, actor Michael Fassbender, entrepreneurs Donal Ring and Michael O’Donoghue and entertainer Daniel O’Donnell who has attracted thousands of people to his Killarney concerts,.

The award is named after Inisfallen Island, on Lough Leane, which was historically a centre of learning where the precious Annals of Inisfallen were scripted.

Two Kerry County Councillors questioned the HSE South West at the Regional Health Forum meeting which took place on Thursday, regarding the significant delay in the opening of the new Community Hospital in Killarney.

Separately, Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae submitted a motion asking for a definite completion date. His motion asked: "Can the HSE please confirm the opening date of the new Community Hospital in Killarney."

The motions were dealt with together, as local representatives sought clarity on the reasons for the extended delay of the vital facility. A formal response from the HSE regarding the questions is expected to follow the meeting.

Councillors question HSE over delay of hospital opening

The project is now running a year behind schedule. The issue was raised at the Regional Health Forum South West meeting this week. The Forum includes representatives from Cork and Kerry County Councils and covers the area served by the HSE South West.

Councillor Marie Moloney (Labour) pressed the HSE for a formal response after her previous query went unanswered.

Her motion stated: "At the last forum meeting I asked a question regarding

Singer Lillie Foley unveils Kyla Shine-Leane inspired by two new Christmas singles Michael Fassbender Masterclass Emerging local actress Kyla ShineLeane recently took part in an masterclass at West End House School of Arts, where participants were led by local Hollywood star Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender, who founded the Killarney-based acting school, returned home to share his wealth of experience from years on stage and screen, offering students an invaluable opportunity to learn from one of the film industry’s finest.

For Kyla, the experience proved both transformative and inspiring.

“Participating in a masterclass with Michael was truly a transformative and unforgettable experience,” Kyla said.

Rising singer-songwriter Lillie Foley is set to release two new Christmas singles this season, both offering a unique and personal take on the festive period.

Annual Garda memorial Mass at Oaks Hotel The Kerry South Branch of the Garda Síochána Retired Members Association (GSRMA) will hold its Annual Mass for deceased members, family, and friends on Thursday, November 13, 2024, at the Killarney Oaks Hotel.

The Mass will begin at 7.30pm and will be followed by light refreshments.

The event, which has become an impor-

tant annual gathering for retired members of An Garda Síochána and their families, offers an opportunity to remember and honour former colleagues who have passed away.

Members of the public are also welcome to attend.

A spokesperson for the GSRMA Kerry South Branch said they were looking forward to meeting members, families, and friends on the night.

Describing the masterclass, she said: "There was a constant emphasis on presence and vulnerability which allowed us to reach deeper and actively listen to one another as he brought an honesty and intensity to each and every performance."

Kyla left the masterclass feeling more confident in her acting skills. "As an actor, the most valuable lesson learned was watching his process. It was both humbling and inspiring, watching him push everyone in the room to their highest potential. I felt more confident to take risks, embrace my authenticity, and trust my instincts, not only in the craft but in life." added Kyla.

"Everyone at West End House is so grateful to have had this experience and, as always, it was an absolute pleasure to work with Michael.”

Councillors approve €220,000 Municipal District allocation Councillors in the Killarney Municipal District unanimously approved their 2025 budget allocation of €220,000 at a meeting held in the Council Chamber at Kerry County Council offices in Tralee, on Monday.

The allocation includes €105,000 for the Strategic Development Fund, which will support public realm improvements, the purchase of new equipment for the Killarney Sports and

Leisure Centre, and funding for the planned Killarney Teen Hangout space on Park Road.

A further €95,000 was approved for Community Support Fund projects, while €20,000 was set aside for town operations commitments.

During the meeting, officials informed councillors that Kerry County Council expects to receive an additional €900,000 through Local Property Tax in 2025, following the revaluation of properties, based on figures provided by the Revenue Commissioners.

Milltown Credit Union celebrates 55 years of community service Milltown Credit Union proudly celebrated its 55th anniversary on October 29th, marking over five decades of service to the local area and surrounding parishes.

The credit union’s origins trace back to a conversation in 1970 between the late curate Fr. Denis O’Mahony and local businessman the late James O’Doherty, who saw the need to establish a local financial cooperative. A study group was formed in May 1970, leading to the official organisational meeting on October 29 that year in the Muintir na Tíre hall, where Milltown Credit Union was officially formed. The first board and supervisors, made up of 15 local community volunteers, were elected that night.

Muintir na Tíre Hall served as the credit union’s home until 1974 when a new premises was purchased on the Castlemaine Road.

This building, 'Credit Union House', was renovated and officially opened on September 21st, 1974, and remains the credit union’s operating base today.

The location has since been expanded and developed to meet the needs of the growing credit union and the local area.

A new bus service linking Mallow and Killarney is in the final stages of planning, according to Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea.

Last Saturday, the credit union had the privilege of welcoming seven of the original board members to join the anniversary celebrations. A candle was lit to remember the six members of the first board who have since passed away.

The current board, management, and staff stated that the legacy of these founding members continues to inspire

their work in the best interest of their members. They extended thanks to all members for their support over the years and to all past and present board members, volunteers, and staff who have helped shape the credit union’s history. They look forward to serving both current and new members for many years to come.

Lissivigeen community day trip to Dingle

Neighbours and friends from the Lissivigeen and District Community Alert area enjoyed a memorable day out in West Kerry recently, with a full coach travelling to Dingle for their annual outing.

The group set off on the morning of September 4, with organiser Christy Lehane describing it as “a great day that everyone had been eagerly waiting for.” The destination had been chosen months earlier, and the trip attracted many of the same regular travellers who had taken part in last year’s outing to Ballymal-

“The skies looked dark when we boarded the bus,” said Mr Lehane, “but as soon as Inch Strand came into view, we knew the weather was on our side.”

The journey included a running commentary from former councillor Michael Gleeson, who acted as guide until the group reached Dingle, where they met local historian Tadhg Ó Coileáin. After a coffee stop in town, the first visit was to Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry, where the sunshine gave everyone the perfect chance to take photos beside the statue of the late football legend.

“Some people went inside to see the

photos of all the famous visitors who called there over the years,” said Mr Lehane. “No one was in a rush, everyone just relaxed and soaked in the atmosphere.”

From there, the bus travelled on along the Slea Head Drive, where the group took in spectacular coastal views and listened to Tadhg’s stories about the history and folklore of the area. A visit to the Blasket Island Centre followed, where the group watched a documentary about the lives of the islanders.

Lunch was served at Ceann Sibéal Golf Club, where the group enjoyed a fourcourse meal. “The food and the service

He said: “Reliable public transport is vital for connecting people across rural North Cork and Kerry supporting access to work, education, healthcare, and local amenities.”

Fine Gael councillor Tony O’Shea also praised the initiative, calling it a “game changer” for local residents by “greatly enhancing connectivity between Mallow and Killarney”. were first class,” Mr Lehane said. “Everyone agreed it was a great choice for our main stop.”

He added that the highlight of the day was their guide, Tadhg Ó Coileáin, whose deep knowledge and passion for the area made the trip truly special.

“Tadhg filled our heads with stories of local history, the films shot around Dingle, and of course, the footballing legends from West Kerry,” he said.

On the way home, the group was treated to songs, stories, and accordion tunes from Paddy Hughes, rounding off what Mr Lehane described as “a most enjoyable and memorable day out for everyone involved.”

Kilcummin Mothers & Others quiz raises over €1,800 for charity Kilcummin Gaelic Mothers & Others hosted a hugely successful Halloween-themed table quiz last Friday night at the Kilcummin Klub Bar and GAA Hall, raising over €1,800 for charity.

The event saw an excellent turnout of more than 130 people, with funds set to be split between Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the local Kilcummin Mothers & Others ladies football team.

Many attendees embraced the Halloween spirit by arriving in 'Spooktacular' costumes, adding to the fun of the evening. Organisers noted that the 'Big Raffle,' supported by generous local businesses and individuals who contributed prizes, played a significant part in the successful financial outcome.

Quiz Master Derek O’Leary put participants through their paces with a variety of challenging questions. Team member Catriona Doolan, one of the organisers, described the evening as "undoubtedly a great social evening for all in attendance," confirming that a fun family night was had by all.

Organisers extended their gratitude to Kilcummin GAA, as well as John O’Sullivan and staff for facilitating the event and providing a wonderful array of finger food at half-time. Thanks were also given to Nessa and Declan for supplying the sound system.

The Kilcummin Mothers & Others group is always open to new members.

Strong turnout for Kerry FC Golf Classic at Beaufort Golf Club

By Luke Mangan The Kerry FC Golf Classic took place recently at Beaufort Golf Club, with players, supporters, and sponsors coming together to raise funds for the club’s ongoing development.

Despite tricky weather conditions, spirits were high as teams battled the elements in what proved to be an enjoyable and successful day both on and off the course.

The event had originally been postponed due to poor weather earlier in the month, but organisers were rewarded this time with a great turnout and plenty of friendly competition.

At the event, the Killarney Advertiser’s Luke Mangan caught up with two of the club’s founding members and proud Killarney natives, Sean O’Keefe, Kerry FC’s General Manager, and Geraldine Nagle, who oversees Match Day Operations.

Speaking about the purpose of the fundraiser, Sean said: “It’s great because it brings lots of people together to support the club financially. The main driver is to make money for the club and to help finance all the teams we have playing all over Ireland.

There’s a huge cost involved, so this is an important part of our fundraising.

It’s also a great chance for sponsors and supporters to meet, enjoy themselves, and have a fun day of golf.”

Geraldine outlined her many responsibilities within the club: “My role at Kerry FC is as a board member and one of the founding members.

I do match day operations. I run all the games from security and safety. I’m also the child welfare officer and I handle ticketing. It’s a lot of roles rolled into one.”

Both spoke about how vital sponsorship and community support have been since the club’s founding.

“We’re totally dependent on sponsorship,” Geraldine said. “It takes a lot of money to run the club and the first team. We’ve been very lucky over the last three years with our sponsors.”

Sean added that Kerry Airport’s continued backing has been a huge boost.

“Kerry Airport came in as our first team sponsor from the start. It’s a great brand and an excellent local facility. Having them behind us helped attract other sponsors too, people could see we were serious and had strong backing.”

When asked about fan support, Geraldine praised the loyalty of Kerry FC’s followers.

“We’ve very loyal supporters. Our lowest attendance was 380, and that only happened once. We had 1,200 people travel to Dublin for the FAI Cup semi-final. Our attendances have been solid since the start, and the more successful we get, the more that’ll grow.”

Sean also highlighted the club’s efforts to make away matches more accessible.

“The big initiative this year was providing free buses for fans to travel. Thanks to our club owner, John Wall, who’s funding it, a lot of people have taken it up. The more success the team has, the more people will travel. We’re a long way from the big cities, so that support means a lot.”

Both agreed that the day was about more than golf, it was a celebration of community and progress.

“We’re very proud to be part of this,” Geraldine said. “To have helped found a community-based club like Kerry FC means a lot. Days like this show how strong that community really is.”

Quality standards mostly met at Atlas House IPAS Centre An inspection of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) into the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centre at Atlas House has found the facility in Killarney to be substantially compliant with the National Standards for accommodation offered to people in the protection process in most areas.

The inspection, carried out on 1–2 July 2025, assessed the centre’s performance across a range of standards with the report being published this week.

HIQA inspectors noted several positive areas at Atlas House. The centre was praised for how it supported residents

from multiple countries with shared bedrooms and family units, offering access to a dining room, lounge, study space and outdoor play space.

Governance arrangements, staffing levels and management systems were judged to be generally effective, with the centre operating close to the required standards. The inspection concluded the service “met most of the requirements” under a range of standards, meaning “substantially compliant”.

Despite the broadly positive findings, the report did identify areas where the centre fell short of full compliance.

These included a lack of wifi outside of communal areas which made study difficult for residents

Award-winning photographer launches stunning new book celebrating Kerry Killarney’s award-winning photographer, Valerie O’Sullivan, has released a striking new photographic book, On the Edge of Europe – Kerry, published by Currach Press.

The beautifully illustrated collection captures the people, places, and wild beauty of County Kerry, from the peaks of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the shores of the Atlantic.

Local landscapes within Killarney National Park feature strongly throughout the publication. Among the stories highlighted is that of Tommy Mullach O’Sullivan of Ballyledder, who painstakingly dragged water from Lough Coimín Piast to build the highest grotto in Ireland on Cruach Mhór in 1975. He was posthumously honoured at a ceremony in Cronin’s Yard in July 2025 — exactly 50 years later.

Defined by the Atlantic Ocean, Kerry’s people and cultural heritage have shaped its landscape for thousands of years. The book charts through words and images the richness of 'The King-

dom of Kerry' from ancient rock art and monastic sites to its golden age of saints, scholars, and pilgrims who ventured across the world.

In his foreword, Niall Ó Donnchú, Director General of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and a native of Gneeveguilla, writes: “Valerie O’Sullivan has long understood that to portray Kerry is not only to frame its grandeur, but to honour the relationship between people and place. Her lens finds the drama of ocean cliffs and mountain passes, but also the intimacy of a face, the glow of a cottage window, the fleeting play of light across stone.”

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that is Killarney National Park is given centre stage in the book, highlighting major conservation work including the regeneration of the ancient oak woodlands

at Derrycunnihy, one of the oldest and most extensive native forests in Ireland and Northern Europe. Other features include the park’s famous red deer, including ‘The Monarch of Mangerton’, the success of the white-tailed eagle project, and the park’s rich flora and fauna.

The book also shines a light on local traditions and characters from the world’s oldest regatta and the first four lady jarveys in Killarney, to the work of volunteers, boatmen, rangers, and educators who continue to protect and promote Kerry’s natural heritage.

From silence to connection: Neil Kelders returns to Killarney to give back and talk mental health When I first moved from The Premier to The Kingdom, Neil Kelders was the familiar face behind the bar at the Tatler Jack. I thought I knew him, but I didn’t really know him at all. His story, like so many untold stories in our community, is a powerful reminder of why mental health matters, and why checking in on friends and family is so crucial.

Mental Health Week took place in the second week of October, and although this feature comes a little late, the timing is still perfect. Neil is giving back to his hometown, hosting a free parent workshop on raising resilient teens. It takes place at Killarney Racecourse on Thursday, November 13 at 7pm. His mission is simple but profound: honest conversation can change everything. No tea, no biscuits, just FaceTime and conversation.

I sat down with Neil to talk about his upcoming workshop.

Neil, the evening at Killarney Racecourse is a beautiful gesture. What inspired you to host it here in your hometown?

My first mental-health talk was in Killarney ten years ago. This town shaped me, so coming back isn’t nostalgic, it’s needed. Parents are still afraid, teens overwhelmed, families unsure how to bridge the gap. Change starts at home with small, human actions. The Racecourse felt right, full of life and community.

When I mentioned it to Ollie, he said yes before I finished. That’s Killarney, people who show up.

You’ve said this event is about “giving back.” What does that mean to you personally?

I feel it’s my duty. I hid my struggles for twenty years. Learning to manage them gave me a responsibility to share what helps. When I told my story, messages came from parents, teens, strangers.

Honesty opens doors. My mental health is strong, but I still have hard days. Recovery isn’t perfection, it’s showing

what’s possible.

You’ve invited clubs, schools, and groups across all divides. What do you hope people take away?

Mental health touches every home, club, school and group. We’ve all got our boxes. Parent, coach, teacher, teen, but none of us has been here before. We’re learning as we go. I want people to leave lighter and more connected, reminded that honest conversations change everything.

You’ve built a reputation for helping people find a way forward using what actually works. What does that look like in practice?

“What works” means tools you can use today, not theory for tomorrow.

In coaching and workshops, that can mean pausing before reacting or small resets that steady a home. It’s not about fixing anyone, it’s helping them move forward with calm, clarity, and courage.

Can you share a bit about your journey, how you came to this line of work?

I was the class clown, always “grand.” I wasn’t. I lived with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts for two decades.

The first person I confided in was my sister-in-law. I felt a weight lifted but it was only the start. You don’t talk once, and it’s gone, you keep talking. At Pieta House, two counsellors didn’t fit; the third did. She challenged me, then said: “Someone else might be a better fit now.” That honesty changed me.

Everyone had helped, but I still had to take responsibility. That was the turning point, stop waiting to be rescued, start rebuilding.

Your book The Other Side has resonated widely. What message do you hope people carry?

Getting through tough times isn’t a straight line. It’s messy, human, and possible. You don’t need it all figured out, just do something. The book shows what rebuilding really looks like: slipups, small wins, learning to live again.

Change will start when you act.

You’ve worked with parents, teen-

agers, and organisations. What’s one common challenge you see?

Disconnection. Parents fear saying the wrong thing, teenagers think no one understands, adults pretend they’re fine.

When people don’t feel heard, they stop talking. My work breaks that silence, listening without fixing, supporting without fear. When people feel safe to be real, things change.

How do you keep mental health relatable, especially for teens?

By being real. Teens spot fake instantly. I don’t arrive with answers, we find them together. They help decide what’s shared with parents; that trust matters.

We talk about goals, values, and what they want from life. Sometimes it’s “burn your thoughts” or a quick reset; sometimes it’s just listening. Once they see they don’t have to be perfect, things shift.

What would you say to parents who feel guilty or unsure?

You’re not meant to have all the answers. Keep showing up, even when you don’t know how. Your job isn’t to fix your teenage child, it’s to help them feel safe enough to talk. You can’t do that if you’re running on empty. A walk, a pause, five minutes of breathing, it helps. Presence beats perfection.

For teenagers, what’s one message you hope they’ll hear?

You’re not broken. You’re feeling more than you can handle right now, that’s being human. When I was your age, I hid for years. If you’ve spoken up, even once, you’re already twenty years ahead of me. What you’re feeling can seem endless, but it isn’t. There’s more ahead.

Calm, laughter, and moments you can’t imagine yet. Keep moving, and don’t do it alone.

Are we getting better at talking about mental health?

We’re talking more but not always listening better. Awareness is great but it isn’t action. We quote “one in four,” but I could never have been a stat, I wore the mask too well. Others are hiding too.

We have more language now, but not always the safety to use it. Stigma hasn’t gone; it’s changed shape. Awareness matters; connection changes lives. If someone leaves feeling hopeful but unsure where to start, what’s one step they can take? Start small. Check in with one person tomorrow. Ask, “How are you, really?” and mean it. Don’t fix, show up.

Killarney anglers celebrate annual prizegiving The Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club held its annual prize-giving night on Saturday, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel, where members gathered to celebrate another successful year on the lakes and rivers of Killarney.

The club’s Juvenile Angler for 2025, Ian O’Leary, received the Scruffy’s Cup, presented by Club Juvenile Officer Frank O’Sullivan and Club Chairman D.J. O’Riordan.

Dermot Mahoney was the standout performer over the season, taking home

two major awards, the John Mannix Cup for the heaviest trout caught in competition this year and the Paddy O’Sullivan Cup for landing the heaviest fish across both the Killarney Salmon and Trout and Lough Lein clubs in 2025.

In the team category, the honours went to The Grumpy Old Men, sponsored by Tom Dennehy.

Despite the team name, there were smiles all around as members Anthony Griffin, Tim O’Connor, and John O’Callaghan (standing in for Tom Dennehy) accepted the trophy from Owen Casey, representing the Casey family, alongside Club Chairman D.J. O’Riordan.

Ploughing match postponed due to adverse weather The annual Killarney Ploughing Match, scheduled for Sunday, November 9, has been postponed to a later date due to adverse weather conditions. The event was due to take place at Coffey’s Farm in Fossa.

The match is the final event of the Kerry ploughing season and was set to be a special occasion this year. The Killarney Ploughing Club had confirmed that three members of the same family were due to compete for the first time.

Tony Wharton, Chairman of the Killarney Ploughing Club, was entered in the senior class. His son, Ryan Wharton, was

planning to compete under the Macra na Feirme banner, with Tony’s brother, Thomas Wharton, acting as their mentor.

Mr. Wharton had previously expressed hope that Ryan would qualify for the All-Ireland Ploughing Finals in Tullamore next year, which would make him the first Killarney club member to reach the national final.

Beaufort Bridge to Dunloe Bridge Road upgrade completed Fianna Fáil Councillor Tommy Cahill has welcomed the completion of resurfacing works on the Beaufort Bridge to Dunloe Bridge road, marking a significant improvement to one of the area’s busiest and most important local routes.

The upgrade, which has just been completed today, provides a smooth new blacktop surface and enhances both safety and accessibility for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Speaking following the completion of works, Cllr. Tommy Cahill said, “I’m delighted to see the completion of the resurfacing works on the stretch from Beaufort Bridge to Dunloe Bridge. This is a busy and vital route for our community, and it’s fantastic to see it brought up to a high standard. Both my father and I had received several requests from local residents about the condition of this road, and following multiple representations made by myself and Deputy Michael Cahill, it’s great to see

this important project delivered. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to Area Engineer John Sugrue and his team for their excellent work and continued commitment to maintaining and improving our local road network.”

Deputy Michael Cahill TD, who supported the project alongside his son, praised the collaboration between local representatives and Kerry County Council, “This is another example of what can be achieved when local voices are heard and acted upon. The Beaufort Bridge to Dunloe Bridge route is vital for residents, businesses, and tourism in the area, and I’m delighted to see it resurfaced to such a high standard. I commend Councillor Tommy Cahill and the Kerry County Council engineering team for ensuring this upgrade became a reality.”

The resurfacing forms part of Kerry County Council’s ongoing programme of local road improvement works across the Kenmare Municipal District.

Rathmore overnight road closure in place next week The Kerry County Council are closing a section of the road on the N72 in Rathmore overnight next week to facilitate road drainage works.

The section of the road to be closed is between Mounthorgan Cross and Reens Garage. The road will be closed 7pm to 7am from Tuesday November 11 to Thursday November 13, continuing into the morning of November 14.

A stop and go system will operate on the same road on November 6, 7 and 10

from 8am to 5pm. Kerry County Council have provided diversions for those travelling between Rathmore and Killarney.

Traffic travelling to Killarney can divert from the N72 onto R583 or R582 if coming from Rathmore. Travel to Macroom and join the N22 and back onto the N72. Traffic travelling from Killarney can divert via N72 onto the N22, travel to Macroom and onto the R582 to Millstreet. Local access will be provided for emergency services and residents.

Two outdoor projects to benefit from almost €200k in funding Two popular outdoor recreation projects in Killarney are to receive almost €200,000 in government funding as part of a national investment package to support walking and cycling trails across the country.

Under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), €200,000 has been allocated to complete the upgrade of the Jarvey Lane Walk and Cycle Trail, while a further €196,299 has been approved for repair and improvement works on the Strickeen Mountain Trail to prevent further erosion.

The Jarvey Lane project will complete phase two of the popular walking and cycling route linking Killarney town with the National Park, while the Strickeen Mountain Trail works will enhance safety and sustainability on one of Kerry’s most scenic hiking routes.

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley said the funding will “hugely benefit the health and well-being of people of all ages and will also be important in terms of attracting visitors to our towns and villages.”

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae also welcomed the announcement, saying: “This is great news for the people of Kerry.

Whether it’s a cycle to the National Park or a hike up Strickeen, these improvements will be felt on the ground by local communities and visitors.”

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill described the investment as “a major boost to outdoor and tourism amenities across the county,” adding that the projects “will enhance our natural environment while providing lasting benefits for local communities, visitors, and the rural economy.”

The funding was announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary on Monday this week.

Ballyhar rower represents Ireland at European competition

There was great excitement in Ballyhar and at Muckross Rowing Club last weekend as local rower Cillian Leslie represented Ireland at the Coupe de la Jeunesse Beach Sprints in Cadiz, Spain.

Cillian was part of a 16-strong Irish squad competing at the event, which featured top Under-19 athletes from 16 European countries. The Coupe de la Jeunesse is one of Europe’s leading junior rowing competitions, and the Beach Sprints are a new format added in recent years ahead of its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Competing in the Men’s Single category,

Cillian advanced from the first time trial with a 10th-place ranking before recording the fastest time in the second round.

He progressed to the knockout stage but was narrowly beaten by Austria’s Janis Glantschnig in the final 16.

Muckross Rowing Club described his performance as an “outstanding achievement,” noting that Cillian had represented both club and country with distinction.

Cillian, the son of David and Melissa Leslie from Ballyhar, earned his place on the Irish team following a strong performance in Rowing Ireland’s national trial series earlier this year.

Killarney priest pens book on Kerry handballing legend

One of Kerry’s best-known priests, Canon Tom Looney, will launch his new book Unbeatable this Sunday at 6pm in the Glenbeigh Handball Complex.

The book tells the remarkable story of Fr Tom Jones, a Tralee-born priest who was also one of Ireland’s greatest early handball players. Born in 1868 on Rock Street, Jones was crowned All-Ireland Handball Champion in 1888 after defeating John Delaney of Athy — a title he retained the following year. Alongside fellow Tralee player James Fitzgerald, Jones also claimed the Munster double-handed championship in 1889. The

pair’s legacy was later honoured when a handball alley in Tralee was named after them in 1949.

After a short but glittering sporting career, Fr Jones entered St Brendan’s College, Killarney, in 1889 to study for the priesthood, later attending Maynooth College, where a court named Jones Alley still stands in his memory. He served in several Kerry parishes, including Glenbeigh, Ballyferriter, Killorglin, Dingle and Caherciveen, and founded the Glenbeigh Handball Club in 1946.

Canon Looney, a native of Killarney, has served more than 50 years in the priesthood and is a respected historian and author. His previous works include a biography of Dick Fitzgerald, King in a Kingdom of Kings.

Liam O’Connor wins top honour at Irish Entertainment Awards Killarney accordionist Liam O’Connor has been named Multi-Instrumentalist of the Year 2025 at the Irish Entertainment Awards, held at the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran, County Donegal.

O’Connor, who holds a Guinness World Record for the fastest fingers on the accordion, received the award from actor Patrick Bergin during a ceremony that celebrated leading figures in Irish music and entertainment.

Liam was joined by his talented family band, daughter Saoirse and sons Oisín and Cillian, who also performed on the night. The O’Connor family were recog-

nised for their outstanding contribution to Irish traditional and contemporary music.

The Irish Entertainment Awards, organised by Keltic Radio TV, brought together some of the biggest names in the industry, including Philomena Begley, Mary Duff, The Nolan Sisters, and the Dublin City Ramblers.

Speaking after the event, O’Connor said he was “honoured and humbled” to receive the award and thanked the organisers, his family, and his supporters. “It was a fantastic night of Irish music and talent and I’m so proud to represent Killarney on a stage like this,” he said.

Plaque unveiled to mark 100 years since first East Kerry League Final The East Kerry GAA Board marked a major milestone on Sunday with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Flesk Bridge to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first East Kerry League Final.

The event was held at the historic site where Kilcummin and Killorglin contested the first-ever East Kerry League decider in 1925. That match, played in the old “Cricket Field” behind Flesk Bridge on the Muckross Road, saw Kilcummin emerge victorious on a scoreline of 2-04 to 1-00 on Sunday, November 20, 1925.

Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady officially unveiled the plaque before a large crowd, which included representatives from every East Kerry club and a strong delegation from Kilcummin GAA Club.

ants of the 1925 Kilcummin players, including Mrs Tessie Sheahan, Mrs Noreen Cooper, Eileen O’Sullivan, and Bridie O’Neill, daughters of team members who played that day.

Following the ceremony, attendees gathered at the Gleneagle Hotel, where Mayor Grady, East Kerry Vice-Chairman Noel Kennedy, and Kilcummin representative Billy Doolan addressed the crowd. Two of the original gold medals awarded to the 1925 Kilcummin team were displayed, provided by Noel and Dermot Fleming and Donal O’Meara, who travelled from Dublin for the occasion.

The event, led by East Kerry President Ger Galvin, was a fitting tribute to the legacy of the first East Kerry champions and to a century of football heritage in the region.

Tributes paid to the former Mayor of Kerry Former Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council and long-serving Fine Gael councillor Jim Finucane has passed away at the age of 68.

Mr Finucane dedicated almost three decades to public service, serving a total of 29 years as an elected representative on Tralee Town Council and Kerry County Council. During that time, he served as both Mayor of Tralee and Mayor of Kerry. Mr Finucane was chairman of Kerry ETB; he was instrumental in the growth and success of Kerry College, ensuring education was accessible to everybody regardless of age and background. He was first elected to Tralee Town Council in 1986 as the only Fine Gael councillor. The former Mayor was heavily involved in Kerry’s response to welcoming Ukrainian families and recently earned the honour of becoming Ireland’s first Honorary Consul of Ukraine for the South-West. Tánaiste Simon Harris, who worked with Mr Finucane when he was chair of Kerry ETB, paid tribute to his late colleague describing him as a “deeply proud Kerry man” who “left Kerry better than he found it.” Mr Harris said those who had the privilege to know Jim will remember a man of warmth, humour and enthusiasm. Tralee Chamber Alliance also paid tribute to Jim’s leadership, generosity and compassion which they said, “helped shape the Tralee and Kerry that we know today.” He is survived by his

at the loss of a man who always had Tralee and the community at the heart of everything he did.

Fota Wildlife Park has announced it will remain closed until the end of November following an outbreak of avian influenza.

The decision was confirmed this week after 12 cases of the virus were detected since the outbreak began. As a result, 73 birds were humanely euthanised.

Fota Wildlife Park said this measure was taken to maintain the highest standards of animal welfare for the Park’s remaining birds. A further 83 birds have since been separated from the rest of the animals. Aileen Tennant, Director of Fota Wildlife Park, described the situation as “very serious”. She said: “Our visitors and supporters are the lifeblood of this Park, and we are incredibly grateful for the public support we have always received. Regrettably, the stark reality is that the ongoing closure of the park is having a significant financial impact on us, particularly the loss of our vital visitor revenue.” Animal care and conservation costs amount to €120,000 each week.

The wildlife park is estimating a loss of €320,000 over the course of the temporary closure. Donations can be made online via their website.

NYC elects first Muslim mayor, whom Trump brands a ‘communist’ Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, has become the first Muslim mayor of New York City, defeating rival Andrew Cuomo.

He is the youngest person to lead the city in more than a century. It comes as the Democrats came out on top in the first major elections since Donald Trump’s presidency began. Moderate Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherril won their elections for governor in Virgina and New Jersey.

During his campaign, Trump labelled Mamdani as a “communist” and threatened to cut federal funding for the city if he won. In his victory speech, Mamdani said: “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.

So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.” In a war of words, Trump retorted: “…AND SO IT BEGINS!” on his social media platform Truth Social.

Purcell’s Christmas lights display in its 19th year The Purcell family are set to bring back their much-loved festive Christmas lights, at Sunhill, Killorglin, for the 19th year in a row.

The beneficiaries are Recovery Haven and Killorglin Hospice. To kick off the fundraising, a bingo night will be held on November 11 in aid of the charities and the Christmas lights. The official light switch on will happen on November 22 at 5pm, where special guests will be in attendance to kick off the festive season.

The Purcell emphasise the importance of waste reduction and their focus is on repairing and reusing the lights where possible. Naoishe Purcell explained that Christmas is a year-round project in the

Purcell household, and they are always planning on how to make it bigger and better than the year before. She said: “There are many weeks of planning involved before we even start setting up, deciding where each light and decoration will go and what new features we want to include. The setup itself takes about four weeks of work, seven days a week, with plenty of early mornings and late nights but every moment is worth it when we see the joy it brings, and the funds raised for such important causes.”

The children of Woodlawn Park, Killarney, were treated to the scariest surprise on Halloween night. After visiting all their neighbours’ houses for treats, they were tricked and told to assemble on the green. Then, out of nowhere, the ghosts of Halloween came alive in a giant lighting and audio-visual display featuring giant spiders, ghouls, witches, and popping eyes crawling across the walls.

Despite the rain, singing skeletons and dancing pumpkins appeared in full

force, creating a memorable night of spooky fun for all the families. The Halloween surprise was the brainchild of Cáelainn Sheehan, Eoin Davitt of CAVS Audio Visual Services, and fellow neighbour Kieran Somers of the INEC. The children even had the chance to create their own scary shapes on the gable wall during the show, a truly ghoulish experience that brought the whole community together.

Disconnect to Reconnect – No-Mo’vember at Killarney Community College

Halloween celebrations in KCC KCC's annual charity fancy dress and walk day was a huge success. The event was raised by the 5LCA group as part of their leisure and recreation task. The fancy dress competition proved hugely popular, and the school paraded all their costumes through the national park on a perfect Autumn morning last Wednes-

day. The students raised over 700 euro for the therapy dog charity My Canine Companion, a charity close to the school's heart as Jet the therapy dog came from them.

The school also ran an art competition in the form of posters and mask design. There were lots of prizes and house points for the winners.

In line with the Department of Education’s national focus on mobile phone bans across Irish schools, Killarney Community College is taking a proactive and positive approach with the launch of “No-Mo’vember”, a month-long trial encouraging students to go phone-free during the school day.

The initiative, inspired by the well-known Men’s Mental Health campaign that runs every November, aims to explore the benefits of reduced phone usage for students’ learning, social skills, and mental health.

Principal, staff and student leaders have highlighted that mobile phones often contribute to classroom distractions, reduced peer interaction, and less participation in lunchtime clubs and activities.

“We’ve always taken a balanced

approach to mobile phone use,” said KCC principal Ms Loughnane, “but we’ve seen that reducing distractions can lead to stronger friendships, better academic focus, and improved wellbeing. No-Mo’vember is our way of seeing what really works best for our school community.”

The initiative has the full backing of the Board of Management, Parents Council, and Students Council, reflecting a united effort to create a calmer, more connected school environment.

5LCVP class are using the initiative to raise awareness and money for the teen mental health charity Jigsaw. Jigsaw Ireland is a mental health charity that provides free, confidential mental health support and services for young people aged 12 to 25 across Ireland.

KCC's senior history class explored Dublin's historic streets with the 1916 walking tour, visited the Book of Kells and the Old Library, and enjoyed a stroll through Trinity.

Transition year students from St Brendan's College visited the Munster Driving Campus in Mallow as part of their Car Safety class. During the visit, each student had the opportunity to drive a car for 15 minutes, gaining hands-on experience behind the wheel. They also completed a theory test to assess their knowledge of road safety and vehicle maintenance, followed by a reaction time test to measure their ability to respond quickly to various driving scenarios.

Strong KDMC presence at Donegal Forestry Rally Killarney and District Motor Club will be well represented at this Saturday’s Donegal Forestry Rally, the final round of the 2025 Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally Championship.

Leading the local interest is Shane Buckley, who resumes his partnership with Donegal driver David Kelly in a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.

The pair have enjoyed a strong season so far, taking two fifth-place finishes on their most recent outings at the Bushwhacker Rally and the Lakeland Rally.

Beaufort’s Diarmuid Falvey returns to forestry action for the first time since 2007.

Kris Meeke to headline the Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally World Rally Championship star Kris Meeke has placed an entry for The Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally. The Tyrone man will make a one-off appearance at the November 29 event, driving a BMW M3 E30 from the respected MATS stable in the Netherlands.

A five-time World Rally winner, Meeke recently completed a full season in the Portuguese rally championship in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 with which he won five rallies.

The Killarney Historic Rally will be a real homecoming for Meeke. His entry is a tribute to the late Maurice Nagle, founder of the rally in 1996 and father of his former WRC co-driver Paul Nagle.

During their time together, which brought them five World Rally Championship victories, Meeke became close friends with Maurice.

Nagle’s dream was to see the best drivers in the world competing in the best historic cars on Kerry’s famous stages.

Meeke’s return brings that dream to life once again.

It is 16 years since Meeke last competed in Ireland, on the 2009 Midland Stages Rally, where he and Paul Nagle drove a Renault Clio S1600. The last time he drove in Killarney was the 2007 Historic Rally the same year he won the Rally of the Lakes.

This year’s rally, while still based in Killarney, will feature some new and long-absent roads in the Kenmare region, with a special highlight being a full-length night run down Moll’s Gap to close out the event.

It is also the 35th anniversary of Bertie Fisher and Rory Kennedy’s famous victory in the 1990 Rally of the Lakes.

“For me just to drive an M3 in a rally is a dream come true, but especially this

rally,” said Meeke. “I have fond memories of Bertie Fisher winning this rally 35 years ago. It is just brilliant that all this has come together. Paul Nagle was beside me for most of my World Rally Championship career and his dad Maurice, who founded this rally, was very much to the forefront during my time in the WRC. “My dad Sydney turns 80 this year, and he ran Bertie’s BMW back in the day. I really hope we can get him to come to Killarney to witness this. I’ve been living abroad for a long time, the last time I entered the Historic Rally was in 2007 in Conor Curley’s car, so I’m really looking forward to returning to Kerry where I know so much of the rally community. It’ll be great to be back in Kerry but even better for a rally. Huge thanks to Paul Ahern for pulling this together, my friendship with Paul goes back to my early days with Paul Nagle and it’s great

that we are all still good friends.”

This will be Meeke’s first-ever outing in a BMW M3 E30, made possible by local sponsor Paul Ahern from Ahern’s BMW in Castleisland. Meeke is one of several drivers expected to pilot the legendary German rally machine in Killarney next month.

Drivers already confirmed for the event include defending champions Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy who will be the top seeds in another Mats BMW. “It will be fantastic to have so many BMW M3s in the rally again this year after Donagh and Rory’s great win in the M3 last year,” said Paul Ahern.

“To have Kris home and back in Kerry will be fantastic in a Mats BMW after such a hugely successful WRC and to see him go up Moll’s Gap in the M3 35 years after Bertie Fisher’s famous win in the BMW following that big battle with Austin MacHale and the Russians in the

ice, will make this a special weekend for everyone.”

“It’s also a great boost for what is now one of the best historic rallies in Europe and a real credit to the hard work Maurice, Angela, and the Nagle family put into it so many years ago that along with the work Anthony O'Connor and the Killarney and District Motor Club team have done in the years since taking up the baton.”

Killarney’s Noel O’Sullivan will co-drive, renewing a partnership that saw him guide Meeke to top-ten results at the Otago Classic Rally in New Zealand in 2024 and 2025 in a Ford Escort BDA. “It’s great too that Noel is joining me.

He’s my historic co-driver and we’ve enjoyed great adventures in Escorts, especially in New Zealand. We work well together in the car, and I know his wit and humour will add to the fun. I can’t wait, it’s going to be a great rally,” added Meeke.

It is a dream come true for O’Sullivan who has won the Rally of the Lakes four times but has yet to add the historic rally to his impressive list of Irish and international rally wins.

“It’s hard to think it’s 11 years since I last competed in the Historic Rally and even longer for Kris, 2007,” said O’Sullivan.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing what the M3 is all about. A big thanks to Paul and everyone at Ahern’s BMW for making it all happen, it’s shaping up to be an epic weekend in Killarney. Killarney is where I fell in love with rallying and to go racing with Kris in my hometown is special.”

Event clerk of the course Anthony O’Connor said Meeke’s appearance proves the international appeal of Ireland’s only rally dedicated to historic machinery.

“To have a World Rally Championship star at the Killarney Towers Hotel Historic Rally shows the prestigious of this event,” he said. “It is an honour to have a driver of Kris’ calibre compete in Kerry.”

The rally takes place on Saturday November 29 with a ceremonial start on Friday evening in Killarney town centre.

Gallivan Financial expands with Dublin acquisition Gallivan Financial, the Killarney-based financial planning and wealth management firm, has announced the acquisition of Dublin company Tara Financial Partners Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

Gallivan Financial says the acquisition of Tara Financial is another important step in its nationwide growth plan.

“Tara’s clients will continue to receive personalised service from their trusted financial advisor, while gaining access to the wider Gallivan Financial team’s technology, expertise and resources,” Mr Smith said.

Earlier this year, Gallivan Financial acquired Dublin-based Mount Street Group and Tralee firm Kelly O’Shea Pensions & Financial Services.

The company is majority-owned by the Gallivan family, who previously sold Gallivan Murphy Insurance Brokers (GMIB) to U.S.-based Assured Partners in 2022. Gallivan Financial was not part of that sale and continues to expand independently.

Funding for the project came from a Tusla Participation Grant, following a 2022 needs analysis in Killarney and Rathmore which identified a shortage of safe spaces for young people. More than 200 young people contributed to the research, alongside input from parents and local services such as CAMHS. As part of the initiative, participants were trained in stop/go animation and VR design using Lego graphics. The finished VR model allows users to explore a digital environment and access interactive information when using a headset.

The group also produced YouTube and TikTok videos showcasing their work.

The VR and digital technology packages used in the project will remain available at Ballyspillane FRC and Rathmore Social Action Group as a lasting resource for future youth projects.

The programme also gave participants

the opportunity to build teamwork and leadership skills while learning more about community development. The work was guided by the Lundy Model of Participation, which ensures that young people are given a genuine voice in decisions that affect them.

At the launch event, attended by more than 60 people, the young participants acted as Masters of Ceremonies. The event opened with a surprise performance by a youth Samba drumming group, followed by speeches from Tusla PPFS Manager for Kerry, Ann Moynihan, and Foróige Area Manager South, Richie Bowens.

Both speakers praised the young people for their creativity, commitment, and contribution to shaping the future of youth services in Kerry. Refreshments were served afterwards, marking the end of a successful and engaging community-led project.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to be completed within the coming weeks. It marks Gallivan’s third acquisition this year and the fifth in the past two years.

The purchase of Tara Financial brings Gallivan’s total assets under management (AUM) to over €850 million, strengthening its presence in Dublin and keeping the company on track to reach its target of €1 billion in AUM by the end of the year.

Following the recent opening of its new state-of-the-art headquarters in Killarney, Gallivan Financial is now well placed to continue expanding across Ireland.

Managing Director Fergal Smith said the acquisition reflects the company’s ongoing growth and commitment to client service.

The project was showcased recently at Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre in Killarney.

The Foróige Youth Needs Consultation in Killarney and Rathmore 2025 ran for over four months during the summer, involving young people from Rathmore Social Action Group and Ballyspillane FRC. The aim was to help shape the direction of youth services across County Kerry.

Participants came from a variety of backgrounds, including residents of International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centres and members of the Traveller community. The project was led by a youth advisory committee of 18 young people, with technical sup-

Three young Killarney gymnasts achieved outstanding results at the recent National Series Championships organised by Gymnastics Ireland at the National Sports Campus in Dublin.

Daniel Smith, competing at Level 1 in the boys’ section, had an excellent weekend, claiming four gold medals in Rings, Vault, Pommel and Team events.

He also secured two silver medals in the Horizontal Bars and Overall Individual categories.

1 in the Under-9 girls’ section, continued the success with two gold medals in Balance Beam and Team events, a silver medal for Overall Individual, and a bronze in Vault.

Meanwhile, Nell Kiely, competing at Intro Level in the Under-9 girls’ section, impressed with a silver in the Team event and a bronze for Overall Individual.

Daniel represented Douglas Gymnastics Club, while Grace and Nell competed for Aerials Gymnastics Club.

Boundary disputes between neighbours Who owns the boundary between your property and your neighbour's?

The general rule is that any boundaries between your land and your neighbour’s land are jointly owned by both you and your neighbour. But you may be able to prove that you own a boundary structure outright. Even if you can show that you have outright ownership of a boundary structure, your neighbour may have certain rights over that structure.

If you do not know where the precise boundary between your property and your neighbour’s property is, or how the boundary is owned, you should start by investigating your title. Your title documents are the deeds and related papers that describe your land. Your property may be registered in the Land Registry.

You should get legal advice if there is a dispute about the ownership of any part of your property or land.

What are party structures?

A party structure is any structure that divides separately owned buildings or is situated at a boundary line or so close to a boundary line that you could not carry out works to the structure without access to the adjoining structure or land.

A party structure can be a wall, arch, ceiling, floor, partition, ditch, fence, hedge, shrub, tree or any other structure.

Do I need my neighbour’s consent to carry out works to a party structure?

You should always get your neighbour’s consent before carrying out works to a party structure. If you carry out works without your neighbour’s permission, your neighbour could take a claim for trespass and nuisance.

You must pay your neighbour’s reasonable costs for getting professional advice

What can I do if my neighbour does not consent to works?

You can apply to the District Court for a works order. A works order may: • Authorise you, or people authorised by you, to enter your neighbour’s building or land for any purpose connected with the works • Require you to indemnify or give security to your neighbour for damages, costs and expenses caused by or arising from the works or likely to be caused or to arise The procedure for getting a works order is set out in Order 93A of the District Court Rules. You must notify your neighbour of your intention to apply for a works order. The required form is available from the District Court clerk.

There are also forms available for an application to the District Court for damage to be made good and for applications to modify or discharge (cancel) a works order. The other party must be notified in these cases as well.

What are the rules in relation to trees and hedges?

A tree or hedge on a boundary is generally the property of both landowners.

You are not allowed to cut down the tree or hedge without your neighbour’s permission. Overhanging branches or roots that are encroaching on your land can be cut back without permission, but only as far as the boundary line. You should still discuss this with your neighbour to avoid disagreements.

You should make sure that the tree is not the subject of a tree preservation order. Tree preservation orders are made by the local authority. You should check with the local authority before cutting back or taking any action against a tree that is subject to a tree preservation order.

Can utility companies cut my trees?

Electricity and telecommunications companies have various rights to cut down or lop trees that are on private property that may obstruct wires, under the Electricity (Supply) Act 1927.

They must give seven days’ notice to the landowner of their intention to do this. You may choose to have the work done yourself. If you do, you must notify the company within seven days, and the utility provider must pay the costs involved.

I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

During the week, I caught up with one of Kerry FC’s cult-heroes and asked him about his inspiring career he has had and his life at the club.

You’ve played for several clubs, you went from the Kerry Academy to Finn Harps to Stockport. They are loads of different changes. How do you adapt to those changes and different atmospheres? ‘’I think adapting is something that I’m good at, as in, when I was young, I have always been a person who talked to people, and it's just a thing with changes. It's really good, and being in the same dress-

Was there ever a specific player you looked up to, or a particular play style? ‘’Yeah, I looked up to a few lads. The biggest one is probably Cristiano Ronaldo.

I’m a big fan. I like the way he’s arrogant; I like the way he plays. Arrogance in a good way, I like that and I think as a footballer I think you should always believe yourself and back yourself.’’

Previously, in 2017, you went over to Everton for trials, and you impressed Wayne Rooney and then-Everton manager Ronald Koeman. How does that feel? ‘’Yeah, when you hear people like that, they are impressed with you. I was very young at the time; I didn’t know how to take it. It was just a skill and a learning thing. I think when I was 13, that’s when I said to myself, you know what, I’m a good player. When people are impressed by you.’’

Kerry FC are a new club, only being founded in 2023. Is football at Finn Harps different from playing locally, given it's such a new club? ‘’No, not really. I think Kerry FC has plans. With Finn Harps, to be fair, I was on loan there, but with their plans and everybody wants to get to the Premier Division, and they are a very good team as Kerry are as well, and I think they have the same goal to get to the Premier Di-

vision.’’

You had the famous goal against Sligo when Kerry made a comeback and won the game. The commentator asked ‘Do you believe in miracles?

Because Daniel Okwutedoes.’ How did it feel when you looked up at the stand and saw all those Kerry supporters cheering in delight? ‘‘Yeah, it was a moment to be proud of.

Even this season, I probably should be scoring 20 goals, but just tweaking a few things in my part of the game and my life. Yeah, I’m delighted and just to see the Kerry fans celebrating with me and shouting my name. It was good that night.’ ‘ How does it feel to work with such a talented and inspiring manager, Colin Healy? ‘‘I actually worked with Colin when I was in the Irish Under-19s. He was at camps, so I know him. I wouldn’t say I know him, but when they said he took the job, I knew him. Yeah, listen, I think his playing career speaks for itself and he speaks for himself.’’

What do you believe is the hardest position on the pitch? Because many people say a goalkeeper, but a striker would also be very hard to play? ‘’For me, I probably think in goals, yeah, because you could have a very good game and a striker could score, and it is on you.’’

Munster GAA hold off on seeding plan After facing a backlash from Limerick, Clare, Waterford and Tipperary players, Munster GAA have postponed their plan to keep Cork and Kerry separate in the 2026 Munster Football Championship.

The new seeding system – which gives the two highest ranked Munster teams in the National League byes to separate semi-finals – will now come into play in 2027, twelve months later than initially planned.

This will give Clare and Limerick a chance to earn promotion to Division 2 of the league, potentially overtaking Cork if the Rebels were to get relegated to Division

3.

Despite traditionally being the two main contenders for Munster football honours, Kerry and Cork haven’t met in a provincial decider since 2021. The Kingdom have won each of the finals since then (one versus Limerick and three versus Clare) by an average margin of 15.75 points.

might be desirable for fans of those teams, businesses in Killarney and Cork, and neutrals alike but Munster GAA’s plans to effectively keep the great rivals on opposite sides of the draw understandably drew criticism from the other participating counties. A statement by the GPA confirmed that players from Limerick, Clare, Waterford and Tipp had met via Zoom to discuss the matter.

They were said to be “deeply disappointed and concerned” by the decision.

The draw for the 2026 Munster Football Championship will take place on November 27 under the old rules. As 2025 finalists, Kerry and Clare will get byes to the last four (but they will not necessarily be kept apart).

Meanwhile, the Kerry team have been enjoying their end of season holiday in Nashville, USA and Cancún, Mexico. Nine squad members are up for All-Stars at tonight’s awards ceremony in Dublin with Joe O’Connor and David Clifford also in contention for the prestigious Footballer of the Year award.

Kerry lose another young star to the AFL

Like most Kerry fans, I was disappointed but not surprised to hear that prodigious Kerry footballer Ben Murphy (18) has signed a contract with the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League.

For the past 12 months we were being warned that several Kerry starlets were being monitored by Aussie clubs. It seemed inevitable that we were going to lose at least one of them.

The news of Murphy’s departure was quickly followed by the confirmation that the exceptionally talented Mayo youngster Kobe McDonald is set to join St Kilda when he completes his Leaving Cert next year. The son of the great Ciarán McDonald, Kobe (17) was potentially the next superstar of Mayo football. But now he’s gone. They really can’t catch a break.

Best of luck to Ben and Kobe. They have bags of potential and I’m sure they’ll be successful.

With that being said, I can’t say I’m happy they’re leaving. Nor was I happy about Cillian Burke leaving, or Mark O’Connor before him. The ‘done thing’, publicly at least, is to simply wish them well and say it’s a great opportunity. But at this stage I think it’s time to say the quiet part out loud: what’s happening is totally wrong.

Let’s call a spade a spade. AFL clubs are poaching GAA players. They’re snatching up guys who have been coached by their local GAA clubs since they were six years of age and leaving nothing in return.

I’ve said this before but the relationship between the GAA and the AFL is toxic.

Healthy relationships are all about give and take. This one is take, take, take.

Again, I genuinely do hope it goes well for Ben and Kobe and anyone who follows them, the same way I hope any Kerry or Irish person who goes abroad enjoys it and gets what they want out of it. Perhaps it’s a nuance lost on some, but it is possible to feel that way while at the same time being totally pissed off about losing them.

We need to decide as an Association if we’re developing players to be the best they can be in the GAA, or if we’re a feeder organisation simply training players up for another game 10,000 miles away that virtually none of us care about.

From a Kerry perspective, lots of our young players seem to be grabbing the attention of AFL scouts, and it does feel more than a little unfair. I’m well aware that no one outside of these county bounds will be pitying Kerry, but we have to stand up for ourselves. Yes, we’re All-Ireland champions and, yes, we’re blessed with great players. We have a team that I believe is capable of

doing something really special in the coming years. But imagine how strong our hand would be if we still had Murphy, Burke, and Mark O’Connor? These are not average athletes. Even on their own they are potential difference-makers.

It is at least encouraging to see figures from the county board being outspoken on the matter. “In terms of Kerry, we don’t take it lying down,” Kerry GAA CEO Peter Twiss told John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner. “And we’d be aware of young lads who are being employed, and we’d always maybe try and give them another option, with schools, or college, or whatever. You have to be kind of careful doing that because you have to appreciate him and his family, but you should certainly try to be seen to do something.

“You’ve got to fight fire with fire up to a point. Now, there’s a limit, obviously.

But I think you should never give up the battle. I think it would be important that any player thinking about leaving Kerry should feel that he can come to talk to the chairman, or secretary, and we can maybe look at other options, within reason.

“I think that’s the message that should go out as well. This idea of doing nothing wouldn’t be Kerry’s way at all. I don’t think it really would have any meaning in the sense of purely financial but of support for education, or something like that.”

The chairman Patrick O’Sullivan has also talked about the problem before, stating that, “if our younger players keep emigrating to Australia the outlook for Kerry senior teams going forward will not be a good one”.

As O’Sullivan and Twiss have both suggested, it’s not a question of stopping players from going. The lads in question have to do what’s best for them, and if they decide that walking away from Kerry football and playing a different sport in Australia is the better option then no one has the right to stand in their way or to criticise.

It’s about being proactive. How can the GAA and county boards work together to make playing county more appealing to the next generation? Can they help provide education and career opportunities? Can they introduce greater financial benefits, without going down the road of full-blown professionalism?

Can they work out a formal deal with the AFL that would see local clubs/counties receive compensation when their best players are plucked from their ranks?

Without professional contracts in place our end, Australian clubs will feel as though they don’t have to. But we are being robbed. In the interest of fairness, something has to give.

Home cup tie could be epic PAUDIE O’CONNOR NATIONAL CUP (ROUND 1)

Utility Trust St Paul’s v GCU Brunell Saturday 7.30pm Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre The St Paul’s women’s team will be hoping to get their National Cup adventure off the ground on Saturday when they welcome 2024 champions Brunell to Killarney. Tip-off in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre is at 7.30pm.

Paul’s have displayed some fine early season form, although their unbeaten start in the Super League came to an abrupt end last weekend when they lost to the Trinity Meteors in Dublin. James Fleming’s side weren’t at their best on the day but they were well in contention heading into the final quarter with the scores at 47-45 in favour of the hosts.

The Meteors pushed on in the fourth, however, eventually running out 63-53 winners.

St Paul’s scorers on the night were Maisie Burnham (13), Tara Cousins (12), Lorraine Scanlon (12), Lovisa Hevinder (9), Denise Dunlea (5) and Leah McMahon (2).

The Killarney club are now joint second in the table alongside the Meteors with both teams holding a 4-1 record. Killester are top having won each of their first five games.

Paul’s opponents on Saturday, Brunell, have won three out of five league matches so far.

LAKERS

The Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers have

now won three of their last four games in Division 1 of the Men’s National League following an impressive home victory over Moycullen in Killarney.

Eoin Carroll and Jack O’Sullivan made significant contributions of the Boys in Black; Carroll hit 17 points and collected 13 rebounds while O'Sullivan had 14 points, 12 rebounds and some spectacular blocks.

Steve Kelly posted 30 points and the durable Sam Grant played every second, adding 21 points along the way.

The Lakers started well before the visitors found their footing and the sides went in level at the half-time break after scores by home captain Carroll. There was still nothing to separate the teams entering the fourth quarter (68-65) but buckets by Carroll, Pablo Murcia and Grant opened up a nine-point lead.

Moycullen fought back admirably, however, cutting the deficit to just four, but Luke O’Hea’s charges held firm to prevail by eight (88-80).

Next up is a cup tie against the Tipperary Talons, a side they defeated by 30 points just a couple of weeks ago. The cup can be very different to the league, though, and they will need another solid performance to advance to the next round. Tip-off in in Killenaule is at 6.30pm on Saturday.

Doolan on the double as Kerry shock Shams

cured the win at Mounthawk Park when Josh O’Dwyer made it 0-1 in the 93rd minute, but Kerry forced extra time when Doolan pounced on a rebound and prodded home the equaliser with 96 minutes on the clock.

The rain-soaked affair seemed destined for penalties until a long punt forward by Kerry keeper Darragh Foley in the 120th minute evaded the Rovers rearguard.

There were understandably tired minds all around, but Doolan was alive to the play. He reached the loose ball ahead of the advancing keeper and flicked it over his head.

The prodigious youngster then had the legs to chase the ball down and plant it into the empty net, prompting ecstatic celebrations from his teammates and Kerry supporters in attendance. (The goal was remarkably similar to another famous goal scored into the same end of the same ground: Daithí Casey’s winner for Doolan’s club, Killarney Athletic, against Celtic in the 2017 Premier A League Final.)

The win marks the club’s first win at any

age group at League of Ireland level.

“It was unbelievable, to win it like that,” manager Donagh O’Brien told Kerry FC PRO Ivan Hurley. “Luke was Man of the Match and it was well deserved. He and Luke Palmer put in absolute shifts. A lot was asked of them off the ball. When you work so hard, you want to get your rewards up the pitch, and that’s what Luke Doolan got. That finish at the end…

Time stops. It was brilliant, to celebrate in front of the John O’Regan Stand. It was ‘different level’ stuff.”

In other Kerry FC news, the senior team have confirmed that Niall Brookwell, Matt Connor and Ewan Lee have extended their stays with the League of Ireland club. Bookwell’s new deal is described as a “multi-year” contract.

“I’m buzzing to have things signed and sorted already,” Wigan native Brookwell said. “I really enjoyed my football here last season, so it was a no-brainer to sign a new contract. It’s clear that there’s only one way the club is going, and I want to be a part of that and build on what we did last season.”

New biography tells Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to Fr Tom Looney about his book on the life of a sporting priest from Kerry Well known Killarney priest and historian Fr Tom Looney will be signing his latest book ‘UNBEATABLE’, a biography of another Fr Tom, in Glenbeigh this Sunday, November 5.

It is not an autobiography but the life story of the remarkable Tom Jones. No, not the Welsh singing star of such hits as Delilah, Green Green Grass of Home and It’s Not Unusual.

It’s not unusual to see Fr Tom Looney in print with books he wrote such as Dick Fitzgerald: King in a Kingdom of Kings.

His latest offering is a long overdue piece on the remarkable Fr Tom Jones (1868-1950).

A native of Tralee, Jones was a noted linguist, a lifesaver of eight Norwegian sailors torpedoed by a German U-Boat

off the Blasket Islands, and a staunch patriot during the era of ‘The Troubles’ involving the RIC in Killorglin. He was a marked man by the notorious Black and Tans.

He spent 45 years (1896-1950) as a priest abroad and in various parishes in the Kerry diocese, including 24 years as a curate and, later, parish priest of Glenbeigh. That and more, much more is revealed in this thoroughly researched book. What is the relevance of that for readers of the sports section of the Killarney Advertiser?

FAVOURITE SPORT

Handball rarely makes the news in this column even though it was a favourite sport of mine in the Old Mon and later in St Brendan’s College. It is heartening to see that Spa GAA Club has a very active handball section promoting the game. Handball is,

after all, one of the four Gaelic games organised by the GAA. Spa are proudly flying the flag.

Sadly, the other handball alleys in Killarney are silent now. Readers may recall an interview in these pages with the great Dominick Lynch, winner of so many world championships. Fr Kieran O’Brien, the busy Adm. in Killarney, is a keen player and is President of Kerry Handball. A dedicated Austin Stacks supporter, he follows in the footsteps of fellow Rockies handball star Fr Tom Jones, an undefeated but mostly unknown world champion.

The new book which will be launched

by John Joe Quirke (Chairman), another fine handballer, at the Glenbeigh Handball and Community Centre. The plaque on the centre remembers Jones as ‘An Laoch Ba Threise’, the most powerful warrior.

The single word title ‘UNDEFEATED’

and the top-quality cover photo of the priest Fr Jones attracted me to research further. I spoke with the author, Fr Tom Looney, “Fr Tom Jones was Tralee born on the Street of Champions, an amazing man in so many sports including athletics and golf (which he said was too slow),” Fr Looney tells men.

“He excelled in handball. You couldn’t beat him. He came to the Sem and won the Munster singles. He won the Munster doubles and when he went to Maynooth he was so good that the president said no one like him had ever passed through the halls of this place, so they named one of the alleys Jones’ Alley, the Kerry Alley. He made such an impression.

“His doubles partner was Tralee man James Fitzgerald, a world champion when he went to San Francisco. He said he could never beat Jones.”

Fr Tom Jones’ tale The present handball alley in Tralee is known as the Fitzgerald/Jones Handball Alley.

DOUBLES OR QUITS?

Reliable sources in Glenbeigh told me that even in old age Fr Jones still played brilliantly, usually for money. When holiday makers from Cork came to Rossbeigh, he lulled them into a false sense of security by taking them on for a nice side bet. Easy money. Sure, how could an old parish priest beat these strapping young fellas?

“That’s right,” Fr Looney confirms. “He said when holiday makers were staying, the best evenings were Mondays and Tuesdays when the visitors had a few bob. He said, ‘I will play you now with my right hand – we’ll have a wager’. He’d win that. Then he said, ‘we’ll play for doubles or quits’. Winner alright.

“Now he said, ‘I will play with my feet’.

He cleaned them out, killing them off with the famous right foot butts. He could hit from behind his back.

“Apart from handball he was a supreme athlete. When he was ministering in Australia, he was passing a stadium one day and got in for free. He said he was an athlete, and he was, in several sports. He took part, winning of course, sweeping the money from the locals. He was banned from competing there after that.”

It was said that as a young student he made so much money playing handball that it paid his way through college. Betting on handball, hurling, football and soccer games was the norm of the day.

Handball was essentially professional at the top.

“Backers of the contestants arranged the matches and on one occasion 400 old Irish pounds (worth over €41,0000 in today’s currency) was the stake in a handball game involving Fr Jones.

Spectators also put small money on the games.

“He was known as an austere and frugal man. He gave 19,000 pounds to the missions, worth a lot more in today’s money. The taxman got back some of that for undisclosed income when his will was declared.

“In the oral traditions he said, ‘half as large as Africa and not a bob’, his searing comment when he was collecting dues at the stations. Obviously, some big farmer had not contributed.”

Like its subject, UNDEFEATED by Fr Tom Looney is a winner.

They started the game second best with Celtic having control of the first half going a goal ahead going into the break. In the second half the boys went out with strong character and really taking the game to Celtic. Jakub got our first goal to equalise, and we played some great football with Oisin getting two more to take the game away from Celtic. The hard work and effort by this team always shines through and they deserved this win overall. We would like to thank Celtic for hosting us and the Ref for a great game. The girls welcomed Kenmare today in tough conditions; to be fair it was a tough day it was a day we did not get anywhere near to what we can do, and Kenmare took advantage of it taking a two-goal lead! The girls dug deep and through Ella Murphy and Roxy got the goals to even up the game. The team overall were below their normal levels but still have enough to pull themselves back into a game like this. Esme O’Sullivan was the girl that really dragged the whole team with her she was fantastic. We would like to thank Kenmare for a fantastic game and the Ref.

U13 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Aisling Annacotty 5-3 Killarney Celtic AET. Dylan McCarthy 2, Josh Buckley. Celtic U13A bowed out of the SFAI National Cup after a titanic game with Aisling Annacotty. Both sides tried manfully to win the game in normal time, but the sides were deadlocked at the full-time whistle. In extra time Aisling made the all-important breakthrough, and they sealed the game to move forward.

U13 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic C 1-3 Killarney Athletic. Fionn Murphy. Celtic C put in a fine effort but on the day Athletic were just a little bit stronger.

GIRLS U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 3-1 Killorglin. Leah Mannix 2, Mia Cox. Celtic U14 girls bounced back to winning form with this win over Killorglin.

EAST KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to our minor boys who had a hard-fought win in Fitzgerald Stadium last Sunday against our neighbours Dr Crokes. This finishes a long, but very rewarding year in which they won the County league Division 1 Shield and made the County Championship semi-final. The game itself was a tight and tense affair, with Legion almost scoring a goal in the first minute, when Kevin Looney charged through but saw his shot come off the foot of the post.

Legion playing into the wind spurned a number of goal and point chances in that first half, with Oisin Fleming, Jack Culloty and Brían Ó Sé almost raising the Green flag. A black card midway through the first half, gave the Crokes

a numerical advantage but the damage on the scoreboard was minimised thanks to some resolute team defending. Crokes did use the wind to good offense to score a two pointer and a couple of scores to lead at the break by 0-6 to 0-3. The Crokes lead was eroded with fine scores from Samuel Scroope and Brian O'Shea. Oisin Fleming left the field with a dislocated thumb and blood injury but with the generous help of the Crokes physio, he was back on the pitch within five minutes. Jack Culloty was replaced after a dead-leg injury by the equally dangerous Eoin Murphy, who got the breakthrough goal for Legion on the three quarters mark with an excellent finish to a backs to forwards break. Legion were on top, but Crokes never gave up and from play they worked a goal. Aindi O’Cathasaigh who was injured in the build up to the goal was replaced with the industrious Sean Pierce and Legion restored their three point cushion after some good possession spells but Crokes pressed hard for a levelling goal and went close in the dying moments but when a Legion player emerged from the pack with the ball in the 64th minute - the boys in green would see out a famous win.

The thoughts of the team and management are with our injured players Aindi, Oisin and Jake and we hope they make a swift recovery. Thanks to the Crokes for another sporting game showcasing the footballing talent in Killarney and thanks to ref Evan Horan and his team of officials. U14 GIRLS: Our valiant ladies forced Scartaglen/Cordal into extra-time in the East Kerry Final in Scart after a testy battle in tough conditions. In the dying seconds (at end of extra time) it took several saves, blocks, and the upright to deny Fossa a draw, and Scart ran out narrow winners on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-8. Great credit to the Fossa girls who fought to the very end across 80 minutes of hectic and physical football. This brings our season to a close.

Kilcummin GAA 100 YEARS: Last Sunday marked a historic milestone for Kilcummin GAA club who on the 2nd November 1925 won the inaugural East Kerry league final defeating Killorglin 2-4 to 0-1. Earlier in the day the East Kerry GAA board marked the centenary by unveiling a special plaque on the Flesk Bridge, Killarney by the Cathaoirleach of Killarney M.D Martin Grady just metres away the Cricket Field which was the venue of the first final and afterwards invited family representatives to the Gleneagle Hotel for some informative musings in a relax manner. Much of the fine work for the occasion was down to the timeless energy of Billy Doolan who undertook the project to ensure that Kilcummin’s first ever win was remembered.

SUPER 10: Well done to our Under 14 Super 10’s team who represented the club and county with great pride on Saturday last at Mick Neville Park in Limerick just coming up short in the Munster final when Monaleen got the better of our lads 4-5 to 1-5. It was a great afternoon of football in which Kilcummin drew with Waterford side Gaultier 2-7 to 3-4 in their opening group game. Conor Gallivan scored 2-1 while Max Moynihan 0-5 with Morrie O’Shea 0-1 got the other scores. The team’s most complete performance came in game 2 when they defeated Tipperary side Rockwell Rovers 4-12 to 0-5, Once again Conor Gallivan hit 2 goals with Max Moynihan and Cillian Sheehan also netting for the team. That win ensured Kilcummin topped the group and set up a semi-final against fellow Kerry side Scartaglin. Scart made the better of the starts and led at the break 2-4 to 0-5 but second half goals from Moynihan (2) and Gallivan (1) spurred the team onto a 3-10 to 3-6 win. Monaleen proved a step too far in the final but once again the team put in a credible display all the way to the final whistle. Well done to all the players who played so well throughout both the Kerry and Munster campaigns who were well decked out in their new zip tops thanks to the sponsorship of Leane’s Kitchens and Bedrooms and Ger Sheehan Building.

Muckross Rowing Club COUPE BEACH SPRINTS: Well done to Cillian Leslie, who returned from Cadiz in Spain as part of the Irish squad that competed in the Coupe de la Jeunesse Beach Sprints last weekend. Cillian contested for Ireland in the Men’s Single event. Racing among the top 20 European junior rowers contesting the event, Cillian progressed from the first-time trial round with a 10th place ranking, to secure the fastest time in the second time trial round. Progressing through to the knockout stages, Cillian faced a strong challenge from his Austrian opponent in the final round of 16. It was the Austrian who secured the win in their knockout sprint to progress to the quarter final stage. The club is immensely proud of Cillian’s achievement, to have reached the top 16 in the newest of European rowing competitions and represented club and country so well.

CLUB BBQ: The club’s annual End of Year Social Event will be held on Saturday evening next, November 15th at the Muckross Park Hotel. With the return of the dark evenings, there will be a welcome taste of summer once more with a sumptuous buffet BBQ in store for those attending. Tickets are available for purchase in advance online through our social media pages. To assist with numbers and event planning, we would greatly appreciate if all tickets could be purchased no later than Tuesday, November 11th. A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase on the evening.

Killarney RFC SENIOR MEN: Killarney RFC’s 1st XV produced a superb display on Sunday in Aghadoe, defeating Scarriff RFC 39–24 in a top-of-the-table clash in the Munster Junior League Division 3. The home side ran in an impressive seven tries in front of a strong crowd to move into first place in the league standings. It was a fantastic all-round team effort, with captain Matt McAuliffe leading by example and the team showing great composure and attacking flair throughout. The coaching team of John O’Connell, Seamus Grealy, and Declan Fuller praised the commitment and intensity shown across the park. Killarney now travel to Dungarvan RFC this coming Sunday, November 9th, for their next league fixture as they look to continue their winning form.

KERRY U17: A proud weekend for the club as several of our young players represented Kerry Rugby U17s in the Intercounty matches held at Virgin Media Park in Cork. Well done to Emjay Leslie,

Ronan Coffey, Luke O'Malley, Mikey Moroney, David Hallissey, Hayden O'Neill, and Kwaku Blessing Annobil, who all did Killarney RFC proud in the Kerry colours.

A special thanks to all the coaches and to Munster Rugby for facilitating another great development opportunity for our young athletes.

Killarney Swimming Club GRANT: Killarney Swimming Club received a €750 Grant Allocation under the Community Support Fund 2025 to provide Lifeguard training. Killarney Swimming Club Would like to thank Kerry County Council for financial assistance under the Community Support Fund 2025, which provided Lifeguard Training for two of our swimmers. Elaine O’Donoghue, PRO said: “This funding is very welcome and has allowed two of our young swimmers, Dara Sheahan and Shane Tomilson, to qualify as Lifeguards.

Dara and Shane carried out their training with Fiona Carroll, Irish Water Safety Instructor. Having additional qualified Lifeguards will benefit both our Club and the wider community. We would like to sincerely thank Kerry County Council for this funding.” Killarney Swimming Club was formed in 2012 and is a competitive club offering instruction, training and competition for young people of all ages and varied abilities in a positive team environment. As well as the huge health and fitness benefits of swimming, our young people learn important life skills such as water safety, commitment, resilience and leading a healthy lifestyle.
