Local families at risk of homelessness

Fourteen families in Killarney are at risk of homelessness after eviction notices were recently issued.

The termination letters were sent by Xerico Ltd., a foreign landlord registered in Cyprus.

Every home in the Loreto Convent Estate has been served with a Notice of Termination which will make more than 40 people homeless. This includes infants, schoolchildren and people with disabilities.

The residents have set up a petition on change.org to fight against the eviction.

13 children currently attend the local national school, some of those students require additional supports.

Three of those students are looking to apply to secondary schools, however now they don’t know where to go.

For years, the neighbours have built a small, supportive community which is now under threat due to the eviction notices.

If the families are forced to move elsewhere, local businesses will lose also their employees.

Dorota Kowalczyk has lived in the estate for ten years and she described the situation as “very hard”.

“It’s a terrible thing to happen. We worry about it every day, especially for our children. We have loved living here; we love our neighbours. We looked after each other during Covid, we have barbecues, we celebrate birthdays, it’s our home,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

The neighbours received their letters in stages, some in June and July. Dorota’s letter arrived in the mailbox at the end of September.

Ms Kowalczyk explained her life is in Killarney and she doesn’t want to go elsewhere, however it’s impossible to find a place to rent in the town.

In the current housing climate, Killarney faces a huge crisis, with limited stock

available and soaring rents.

The residents say that forcing dozens more people into homelessness is not just unethical, it damages the towns stability and economy.

The families are calling on Kerry County Council and Killarney authorities to act immediately.

They believe the situation can be resolved by a Tenant-in-Situ purchase, an Approved Housing Body partnership or any other available mechanism. They are urging the council to protect their families, safeguard their community, support local businesses and preserve Killarney’s heritage.

It is not the first time that the Cypriot property company has evicted several tenants. The Dublin Inquirer reported last October that RTB figures revealed that tenants of Xerico Ltd. were issued eviction notices at a much higher rate than other landlords.

They also found that 191 eviction notices were issued in 2023, with many of them cited as Part 4 tenancy ending.

The Killarney Advertiser has contacted the Home Club and Xerico Ltd. for comment.

Tenders invited for refurbishment of Knockreer House

Knockreer House, located in the heart of Killarney National Park, is set to undergo a significant restoration and refurbishment.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is now inviting tenders to complete the work.

The project aims to carefully revive the gardens’ unique heritage features and will celebrate the rich cultural history of the building.

It will enhance the visitor experience to one of Ireland’s most treasured landscapes.

The first phase of the project will focus on the conservation, protection and presentation of the built heritage items, including Knockreer House, the Summer House in the Gardens, features such as flights of steps, balustrades, walls and other garden elements.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christoper O’Sullivan explained that the restoration project will ensure future generations can enjoy and

learn from the gardens while honouring the historic legacy of Knockreer House. He said: “Killarney National Park holds a special place in the hearts of visitors from around the world, and the revitalisation of this space adds another layer to its extraordinary story.”

Originally part of the estate of the Browne family, Earls of Kenmare, the gardens surrounding Knockreer House once reflected the elegance of 19th-century landscape design, offering panoramic views of Lough Leane, Ross Castle, and the majestic McGillycuddy Reeks.

Niall O’ Donnchú, Director General of the National Parks and Wildlife Service said the refurbishment will provide a wonderful centre point within the National Park. The closing date for receipt of tenders is 27 October 2025.

KIFF will be closing the programme with Park Avenue on October 19 at Cinema Killarney, where

Killarney Coffee Cup project is still ongoing

While several participants remain committed to the Killarney Coffee Cup Project, many businesses in the town have withdrawn from the initiative posing significant challenges for the project.

Once non-participating outlets enter the market, many customers revert to convenience and single-use cups. As a result of this, small businesses also revert to single-use cups to compete with competition. Organisers of the project say that without universal rules, convenience wins, and single-use cups will end up in general waste. Johnny Maguire, co-president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, said it is disappointing that the government are unwilling to move forward with the latte levy legislation. He said: “This project proved that the latte levy, which had been promised by government, would work.” Despite the withdrawals, the project continues with

the support of Kerry County Council, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, the NPWS, Failte Ireland, local hoteliers, local businesses and the wider Killarney community. Since its launch, there has been positive outcomes. There has been a reduction in litter and single-use waste, which saves an estimated 18 tonnes of waste annually. There has been interest from 35 towns across Ireland who are eager to replicate the model in their own communities. The Killarney Coffee Cup Project remains committed to reducing waste and inspiring change locally however they warn that lasting impact requires leadership and policy support.

O’Donoghue Ring staff finish wellness programme

The O’Donoghue Ring Collection organised a seven-week summer wellness programme for their staff this year.

Employees participated in a 5km walk to end the successful campaign, with families also invited to join an optional 2km walk.

The initiative featured a variety of activities designed to nourish the mind, body, and soul, from in-house fitness classes including mat pilates and circuit training to an engaging book club with lively discussions, as well as a competitive steps challenge.

A new highlight this year was the launch of the running and walking club, created and led by team members themselves.

Chefs from across the Collection also shared their expertise through a healthy

recipe’s initiative, promoting wholesome meal planning and mindful eating. Participants also benefited from expert training plans, nutrition and sleep-hygiene guidance, and tailored recovery routines.

After completing the Fun Run, team members came together at Café du Parc to celebrate their efforts with a wellearned spread of light bites and refreshing spritzes crafted by the O’Donoghue Ring Collection’s mixology team.

Gemma Ring, Managing Director of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection, said working in hospitality is both challenging and rewarding. She said: “The well-being of our teams is always our top priority. We thoroughly enjoyed this year’s wellness programme and event, and we hope everyone carries the benefits of the past seven weeks into the winter months.”

Samhain Chiarraí is a celebration, rooted in Ireland’s authentic Samhain heritage drawing inspiration from the Cailleach, the wise and wild Goddess of Winter who emerges each year to mark the end of the harvest and the turning of the Celtic year.

Three new Samhain experiences will take place in Killarney, Tralee and Listowel, and these family events will tell the story of the Cailleach Chiarraí. It will take the form of Street Processions, Awakening Spectacles, Fireworks, Céilis, Willow Workshops and Treasure Hunts.

It has 23 bedrooms and is set on an acre of manicured gardens less than a 10-minute drive from the centre of Killarney. It was previously owned by Geraldine and Michael Rosney however Kerry hotelier Patrick Eviston recently took ownership. Following sensitive refurbishment the spirit of the old house has been retained while adding modern comforts.

Rozzer’s Restaurant is one of their most popular features where hotel residents and locals dine often enjoying their wellpaced dinners, extensive wine list and welcoming bar.

The Georgina Campbell awards said:

“With its intimate scale, friendly hospitality and appealing food, Killeen House offers a distinctive 3-star experience that brings guests back time and again.”

The awards ceremony, which took place last week, celebrated the country's best fine dining.

The winners are selected by year-round assessments by a team of anonymous experts.

BUDGET 2026

Kerry politicians react to 2026 Budget

Once the Minister for Expenditure Jack Chambers TD commended the budget to Dáil Eireann, members of the coalition parties erupted in applause.

However, the celebrations were shortlived as reactions to the budget quickly surfaced. Since its unveiling, there has been a mixed response. Opposition party Sinn Féin has accused the government of leaving the Irish people on their own saying they’ve left working people “out in the cold”. Kerry Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae called on Sinn Féin to stop the “double-speak”. Minister Healy-Rae welcomed the VAT reduction for the hospitality and hairdressing sector saying that it will give a much-needed boost to local businesses. He said:

“This is a major win for small, family-run businesses the length and breadth of Kerry. Whether it’s the local café in Kenmare, the restaurant in Tralee, or

the hairdresser in Killarney, this VAT cut will help them stay competitive.”

His brother, Deputy Danny Healy-Rae has also welcomed the VAT reduction, the funding for TB and sheep farmers, however he says he is disappointed that the means test for the Carers allowance was not removed completely. He said he is “disappointed” in the way some of the carbon tax is spent in the name of active travel and warns that the funding allocated to health needs to be spent carefully to ensure more respite is put in place for those that care for loved ones at home. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has welcomed the major investment in Kerry mental health services, with the county set to benefit from

the new €1.3m crisis resolution service. It will involve the recruitment of 10 new whole-time-equivalent mental health professionals locally. Deputy Cahill described it as a “transformative development for mental health services in Kerry.” Killarney MD Mayor Martin O’Grady says he believes the working family middle earners were most affected. He said tax bands weren’t adjusted to allow for inflation amid Ireland’s cost of living crisis. “I believe it’s unfair,” he said. Minister for Children Norma Foley has welcomed the measures, saying: “This is a budget focused on securing jobs, securing communities and services and future proofing our economy against any future challenges.” Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly described the hikes in carbon tax as “totally unfair” and said, “this out of touch government is determined to continue hitting ordinary people where it hurts most”.

Seán Kelly welcomes budget funding for GAA

Kerry MEP Seán Kelly has welcomed the €2.54 million in funding for the GAA and the GPA but said it must be viewed as a “stepping-stone towards the level of support our inter-county players truly need and deserve.”

Under Budget 2026, the GAA will receive €984,000, while the GPA will receive €1.56 million, a significant increase on previous years. However, Mr Kelly said this remains “modest when set against the scale of the players’ contribution to Ireland’s economy and cultural life.”

Mr Kelly said: “Our inter-county players dedicate extraordinary time, effort, and

personal resources to representing their counties. The Government’s decision to increase support is welcome, but it must now be followed by a structured plan to meet the GPA’s request for €10 million in full down the line,”

He is calling on the Government to engage directly with the GPA to better understand the needs and realities facing players.

Mr Kelly, a former President of the GAA and Chair of Sport Ireland, together with his Fine Gael colleagues in the European Parliament, had written to Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe last month urging additional funding for the GPA and recognition of the unique amateur model underpinning Gaelic games.

VFI chief says traditional pubs now “fighting for survival”

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland has criticized the budget saying it fails to deliver for the thousands of traditional pubs now fighting for survival and leaving food pubs waiting months for promised support.

Delaying the VAT cut until mid-July is “unacceptable” and food pubs will face their toughest trading period in the first half of the year as they struggle with crippling costs.

VFI says the Government ignored traditional pubs by refusing to introduce the Draught Excise Rebate Scheme, a capped and targeted measure that would have returned a share of excise on draught

beer and cider directly to on-trade businesses.

Pat Crotty, VFI Chief Executive, said it is a bitter blow for traditional publications. He said: “This Budget shows little understanding of how fragile the pub trade has become. Small publicans are being asked to carry the weight of endless new costs while being given no meaningful help to survive. Communities will lose their pubs if this continues and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.”

The VFI is calling on Government to bring the VAT cut forward to January 2026 and urgently revisit a Draught Excise Rebate as part of any cost-of-business package.

Sinn Féin’s Kerry chairperson slams budget as “out of touch”

Sinn Féin chairperson in Kerry has described the 2026 Budget as “completely out of touch” as Kerry people struggle to make ends meet.

Daithí Fitzgerald says that the budget once again proves that Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Independents have no understanding of what young people, workers and families are going through.

As landlords get a tax break, there is no increase in the renters’ tax credit and no tax cut for workers who are struggling with the cost of living; there is nothing included for young people trying to get a start in life.

“Right across Kerry, young people tell me the same thing, they’re struggling,” said Daithí.

He said: “They’re doing everything right, working hard, trying to build a future, but this Government keeps making it harder. Petrol and diesel is going up again, insurance companies are making massive profits, and the price of everything keeps rising. This Budget just makes no sense for ordinary people.”

He said the withdrawal of the energy credit will hit young people living at home especially hard.

Many are forced to stay with their parents because they can’t afford rent, but now their family homes will lose the energy credit and still face double-digit electricity price hikes starting next week. Daithí said the situation in Kerry and across rural Ireland is particularly dire: He explained: “In rural towns and villages, we’re watching our generation emigrate because they can’t see a future here. There’s no change to housing targets, even though the Housing Commission said we need a radical reset. Young people just don’t have a chance under this Government.”

Rathmore Credit Union celebrated founder’s

life and

legacy

Rathmore & District Credit Union celebrated the life and legacy of Nora Herlihy, one of the key founders of the credit union movement in Ireland.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled at her birthplace in Ballydesmond. The event was attended by the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers from Rathmore & District Credit Union, members of Nora’s family, local community members, and Brendan Jenkins, President of the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU), David Malone, CEO of the ILCU, and Pat Sheehan, Director of the ILCU. The day also includ-

ed visits to the Nora Herlihy Memorial Centre and to Ballydesmond Church graveyard, where a wreath was laid at Nora’s grave in her memory. Nora Herlihy, a teacher by profession, devoted her life to tackling poverty and promoting financial inclusion. Her work in the 1950s and 1960s laid the foundation for what has become one of Ireland’s most trusted and community-driven financial movements.

HSE South West launch winter vaccine campaign

HSE South West has launched a Winter 2025 vaccination campaign, with the rollout of both the flu and Covid-19 vaccines.

The campaign encourages all those eligible to take up their vaccines as soon as possible, protecting themselves from illness.

Vaccination is safe, effective and your best defence against seasonal illnesses. It protects not just you, but also your family, and the wider community.

HSE South West experts reminded the public that getting vaccinated now rather than waiting until later in the winter can help you avoid the need for isolating and missing out on social and seasonal get-togethers.

Those recommended to get both flu and Covid-19 vaccines in autumn/winter 2025 are:

• Those aged 60 years and older

• Anyone aged 6 months and older with an underlying medical condition.

In addition, all healthcare workers, all children aged 2-17 years and all pregnant women are recommended to get the flu vaccine.

Dr Anne Sheahan, HSE South West Regional Director for Population and Public Health said:

“Don't let yourself or your family be sidelined by Flu or COVID-19 this winter. If the vaccine is available to you, I strongly encourage you to get the vaccines as soon as possible. Each winter season, our immunity to viruses drop, so it’s important to top up your flu vaccine now and get

your COVID-19 booster when it is due. People can get very ill from both flu and COVID-19 and end up in hospital. No-one wants to end up in hospital, so protect yourself and others around you by getting your vaccinations.”

Gabrielle O’Keeffe, Head of Service for Health and Wellbeing, and Strategy said:

“Flu and Covid-19 will circulate again throughout this winter. It is very important that all those who are in recommended groups get their free flu and COVID-19 vaccines. For more information, please speak to your GP or Pharmacist or visit hse.ie.”

Last winter, almost 6,500 people were hospitalised with flu while more than 2,000 people were hospitalised with COVID-19.

Both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available from participating GPs and pharmacies and are safe to be given at the same time. In addition, HSE South West vaccination teams will provide vaccines for people living in residential care facilities and housebound patients. Healthcare worker vaccination clinics will take place in many HSE South West workplaces across Cork and Kerry.

To see which vaccines are recommended for you, visit hse.ie/flu or hse.ie/covid19vaccine, call HSELive on 1800 700 700, or speak to a participating GP or pharmacy.

Holy Family NS Rathmore, Raheen NS, Meentogues NS and Shrone NS have teamed up with three other schools on the Cork side of the border to launch an innovative project called Agree to Agree.

This is a community wide effort to help families navigate the challenge of children and technology.

Local schools launch initiative to promote healthy technology usage

The initiative encourages parents of primary school pupils to make a voluntary pledge around healthy technology use at home.

For younger pupils, this includes keeping children smartphone-free, following age-appropriate guidelines for games and apps, and staying off social media during primary school years.

For older pupils who may already own phones / devices, the project suggests practical steps such as reducing screen time, keeping phones out of bedrooms,

avoiding age-inappropriate apps, and learning about digital citizenship and online safety.

In the coming weeks, children will bring home information packs and families will have the chance to sign the voluntary agreement. Two parent webinars are already scheduled for October 26 and February 26.

This Pilot was funded by the Depart-

ment of Education and Skills under the then Minister of Education and SkillsNorma Foley TD. Schools were invited to participate through Tralee Education Support Centre Director, Terry O’Sullivan.

The other participating schools are Ballydesmond NS, Kiskeam NS, and Knocknagree NS.

World Space Week: A mission with purpose

World Space Week (WSW) is more than a celebration—it’s a global movement with a bold and inspiring mission.

At its heart lies a commitment to promoting space education and outreach, ensuring that people of all ages understand the profound impact space science has on our daily lives.

One of the key aims of WSW is to highlight the tangible benefits that space exploration brings to humanity. From satellite communications to climate monitoring, space technologies continue to improve life on Earth in countless ways. The week also serves as a platform to encourage the use of space innovation in driving sustainable development, particularly in areas like agriculture, disaster response, and environmental protection.

Public enthusiasm is another cornerstone of WSW. By showcasing the excitement and possibilities of space programmes, organisers hope to foster a deeper connection between communities and the cosmos. This enthusiasm is especially vital for young people, as WSW seeks to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), paving the way for the next generation of explorers and innovators.

Finally, World Space Week champions international cooperation. By bringing together nations, agencies, and educators, it strengthens global partnerships in space outreach and education.

Ronaldo becomes football’s first billionaire player

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially entered the billionaire club, becoming the first footballer to do so, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

The financial media firm has valued the 40-year-old Portuguese icon’s net worth at a staggering $1.4 billion (€1.33bn), factoring in his career earnings, investments, and lucrative endorsement deals.

Ronaldo, currently playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has earned more than $550 million (€523m) in salary since 2002. His decade-long partnership with Nike alone brings in nearly $18 million (€17m) annually. When he joined Al-Nassr in 2022, he reportedly became

the highest-paid player in football history, pocketing £177 million per year. His initial contract was set to expire in mid-2025, but a new two-year extension – rumoured to be worth over $400 million (€380m) – will keep him on the pitch past his 42nd birthday. Meanwhile, long-time rival Lionel Messi has earned over $600 million (€570m) in pre-tax salary during his career, including a guaranteed $20 million (€19m) annually since joining Inter Miami in 2023. Though his earnings trail Ronaldo’s, Messi is expected to receive a stake in the club upon retirement.

Ronaldo’s billionaire status marks a new milestone in the business of sport, proving that football’s biggest stars are now global financial powerhouses.

Cllr Cahill flies the flag for Kerry at EU housing summit

Fianna Fáil Councillor Tommy Cahill recently represented Ireland at the prestigious YELL Summit in Brussels, a two-day gathering of young elected leaders from across Europe focused on tackling the housing crisis.

Held by the European Committee of the Regions, the summit explored innovative solutions to youth housing challenges.

Cllr Cahill described the event as “insightful and energising,” noting the shared struggles around affordability, urban migration, and housing supply. He praised the diversity of ideas presented, shaped by each region’s unique circumstances.

The summit featured contributions from

Clare Colleran Molloy and MEP Vlad Voiculescu, whose closing remarks—“A Home of Your Own”—struck a chord with attendees. Cllr Cahill also met with European Commissioner Michael McGrath and MEP Billy Kelleher, raising agricultural concerns and discussing Kerry’s housing needs.

On his flight home, Cahill seized a chance encounter with Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan to highlight the financial burden Kerry County Council faces in funding coroners’ services. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” he said. “I’ll always speak up for Kerry—whether it’s in Brussels or 30,000 feet in the air.”

Cllr Cahill stressed the importance of EU engagement and called for a pro-Europe stance from Ireland’s next President.

Trump brokers historic Gaza ceasefire deal

In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump has announced a landmark ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking the first phase of his 20-point peace plan aimed at ending the devastating war in Gaza.

The deal, brokered through indirect talks in Egypt, comes just one day after the second anniversary of Hamas’s October 2023 cross-border attack on Israel. The conflict has since claimed over 67,000 lives and drawn in regional powers including Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon. Trump confirmed the breakthrough on Truth Social, stating: “ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.” Celebrations erupted across the region.

In Gaza, residents clapped and cheered, while in Israel, families of hostages lit fire-

works in relief. “Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing,” said one resident in Khan Younis.

While the announcement has sparked hope, the agreement remains fragile. Key details – including timelines, prisoner exchanges, and Hamas’s future role – are still being negotiated. Nonetheless, the accord represents the closest the two sides have come to peace in years.

Trump is reportedly considering a visit to the region this weekend to oversee the next steps.

The ceasefire also comes at a politically charged moment, with President Trump seeking to position the deal as a cornerstone of his foreign policy legacy. Analysts say the timing could influence upcoming diplomatic summits and reshape alliances across the Middle East.

For families on both sides of the conflict, the hope is simple: that this time, peace will hold.

Amazing! Here you will get more than just a haircut. I went without a reservation and he attended to me immediately. He is very attentive to the details so that the cut is perfect. Limerick-based psychic coming to town this month

Have you ever been to see a psychic or wanted to see one?

Many people are either fascinated by the prospect or simply don’t entertain the idea of it. There are many different types, clairvoyants, mediums and fortune tellers. Clairvoyants work with the clients’ subconscious while mediums connect with the deceased.

Madame Lisa is a Limerick-based psychic with over 30 years’ experience. She often holds clinics in Killarney and across the county. She sat down with the Killarney Advertiser to speak about the work she does.

ORIGIN

Living in Clare, Lisa’s main office is based in Limerick where she works from predominately. She began doing readings online after the pandemic hit in 2020. Lisa’s grandmother was a psychic before her, and when she fell ill, Lisa took over the business. It runs in the family with her great-grandfather having worked as a mind reader in the circus. Lisa began working as a psychic in the 1980’s and her background is in psychotherapy.

DAILY WORK

Much of her work involves helping people through crisis situations in their lives. She explained: “A common catch phrase I hear is ‘I feel like I am stuck.’ People can talk to family and friends but often they feel the need to confide in a stranger to hear the hard truth. Hearing it from someone outside of your close circle is different and the truth sets us free.” When she first started out, her customers had standard, specific questions about their day-to-day life such as love and career however she has noticed a big shift in the last five to ten years. She said: “Nowadays people are generally just dissatisfied with life, there is a gaping hole, and they don’t know how to fix it. Our lifestyles now give us more time to think and ask: what is my life.”

READINGS

Lisa explained that when she reads people, she gains a strong sense of their character. She said: “It’s my antenna and inner self. It’s like a spider web. I can feel an exchange of energy quite strongly.” She reads tarot cards, palms and crystals, with tarot being the most popular form among her clients. She loves to meet sceptical people as she can see the sense of shock during and after readings. “It’s rewarding to send someone out the door less sceptical than when they came in.” However, she admitted

that she dreads meeting people who are overly obsessed by the paranormal and those who think everything is predetermined. “Some people give up their own personal power. I find it huge pressure when people hang onto my every word. We are all subject to fate but free will and choice do ultimately shape our paths.” She explained that most of her clients are repeat customers, and new people are referred through word of mouth.

CLIENTS

Lisa said that people struggle with connection nowadays, and the ability to connect with something bigger than themselves. She said: “We all need something to believe in, whatever that may be.” She explained that many of her clients are relieved to hear the truth, although they might not take it well at the beginning. She provided an example of a client she spoke to over a year-and a half ago.

“A lady I spoke to had multiple

failed IVFs, and I told her it wasn’t going to happen. At first, she was so annoyed, however she since came back to me and said that I had set her free.” Lisa explained that it is not always bad news in her readings and there can be a lot of scaremongering around psychics.

ENERGY

When asked on how she protects her own energy, she replied: “I ground myself a lot. I do a lot of hiking and walking. I spend a lot of time in nature. I don’t answer the phone after work. I go to my garden with a cup of coffee; that’s my safe and happy place. That’s my sense of connection.” When she is travelling in

different counties, she has time to process everything in the car, and by the time she comes home her mind is clear. She said: “My car is like a decompression chamber.” Although it’s occasionally overwhelming, she describes it as a privilege to have people share such personal stories with her. She said: “Often I see a lot of intergenerational pain, inherited abuse and toxic shame that has been passed through the generations. If I can do anything to help break that chain, it’s a job well done.”

Lisa will be hosting clinics in Killarney on October 15 at the Heights Hotel and she will also be in Listowel on October 14, from 3 – 8pm on both days. For further information or to make a booking you can message her on Facebook or call her on 0896067962.

Two books launched at Kilgarvan Motor Museum

Two new books were launched at the Kilgarvan Motor Museum on Sunday, drawing a strong local turnout.

Following on from the success of his first book, From Cornwall to Kerry, published four years ago, John Mitchell launched his second title, A Life of Cars, Family and Farms

The new book is filled with stories from John’s life, covering his time in farming, his work with cars, and his family life. The event was attended by family members, friends, and neighbours.

Minister Michael Healy-Rae spoke high-

ly of John and his writing, as did John’s long-time friend Tony Darmody from Killarney.

A third book was also unveiled at the event, featuring the full collection of vehicles housed in the Kilgarvan Motor Museum.

John extended his thanks to his family and friends who helped put the books together and to everyone who attended the launch.

All three books are now available at the museum and in shops in Kilgarvan and Kenmare, and will be available online in the coming weeks at www.kilgarvanmotormuseum.ie.

Aghadoe crew overcome early drama at rally legend

Aghadoe crew Rob Duggan and John McCarthy showed real determination at Rallylegend in San Marino last weekend, tackling some of the most spectacular mountain stages in Europe under floodlights, fireworks, and enthusiastic crowds.

The pair hit trouble during Thursday night’s Super Special Stage when the steering rack failed on their Ford Escort Mk2. With quick help from fellow competitor Frank Kelly, they managed to source a replacement left-hand-drive rack.

Their mechanics, Jason Farrell, Gary Healy, Michael O’Sullivan, and Anthony Cronin, worked into the early hours of Friday morning to get the car back out for the next leg. The effort paid off as Duggan and McCarthy rejoined the action

and drew big cheers from the thousands of fans lining the narrow mountain roads.

The festival atmosphere around the event was electric, with glowing brake discs lighting up the dark hillside stages and fireworks adding to the action.

Unfortunately, the team’s run came to an end late on Saturday when another mechanical issue forced them to retire.

Despite the setback, Duggan praised his crew for keeping them in the fight as long as possible.

Ciara Griffin, from the Killarney and District Motor Club, co-drove for Cork’s Neil Phelan to a strong finish in another Ford Escort, her first competitive event on European tarmac.

Also representing Kerry were Ray and Gene Stack, backed by a large Kerry Motor Club support crew and travelling fans, who created a real party atmosphere high in the San Marino mountains.

Domestic Violence Leave

What is domestic violence leave?

If you are experiencing domestic violence and abuse, you may need to take time off work for urgent and essential matters relating to your situation. This could be for medical visits, legal proceedings, counselling, looking for alternative accommodation or accessing domestic violence services. It might not be possible to do these things outside your work hours, or you may need to keep them hidden from your abuser. The domestic violence can be ongoing or have occurred in the past and includes violence, or threat of violence, including emotional, physical, sexual, digital, and economic abuse and coercive control. Abuse can happen to anyone at any age and in any type of relationship. Who can apply?

All employees who have experienced or are currently experiencing abuse are entitled to domestic violence leave. You do not need to be working in your job for a certain amount of time to qualify. You are eligible if the person perpetrating the domestic violence and abuse is your:

• Spouse or civil partner

• Cohabitant

• Current or former intimate partner (current boyfriend or girlfriend or ex)

• Child who is over 18 and not financially dependent on you

• You are also eligible for domestic violence leave if you are supporting a 'relevant person'.

• Get a safety order from the courts

• Get help or advice from a legal practitioner like a solicitor

How much domestic violence leave is available?

You have a right to 5 days of domestic violence leave in any consecutive 12 months. This is the statutory entitlement (that means the legal minimum). Your employer can give you more than the statutory entitlement and they may give you additional paid or unpaid special leave if needed.

If you work part-time, you are entitled to domestic violence leave on a pro-rata basis. This means, for example, if you work 50% of a normal working week, you are entitled to 2.5 days’ leave.

The leave does not need to be taken all at once. It can be taken as single or multiple days. An absence for part of a day is

How do I apply?

Check if your employer has a workplace domestic violence policy and follow the process to apply for the leave and other supports available.

Do I need to give notice to my employer?

You do not have to give your employer notice to take domestic violence leave in emergency circumstances. You should give notice if you are able to, or as soon as you practically can after taking it. Can my employer ask for proof?

You are not required to give your employer any supporting information or evidence when requesting domestic violence leave. There might be exceptional situations where your employer could ask for supporting documents, but this would be rare and is not in line with the intentions of the law.

Your employer should treat any information you disclose about domestic violence with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality. They should only share the information with those who need it for safety plans or administering domestic violence leave. Ideally, your employer should get your written permission be-

DOUBLE DOUBLE

Killarney and Tralee to host pair of quarter-final double headers

East Kerry, Mid Kerry and West Kerry are the only divisional teams left in the race to win the Bishop Moynihan trophy as the Kerry Senior Football Championship reaches the quarter-final stage this weekend.

Of course, following their defeat to Mid Kerry, Dr Crokes will be hoping that a divisional outfit go all the way as this would allow them as club champions to represent Kerry in the Munster Club Championship.

The last eight schedule sees two double

headers taking place, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, with one in Killarney and one in Tralee.

East Kerry showed well as possible championship winners when they annihilated Templenoe 3-23 to 1-10 in Round 1 last weekend. Their top scorer was Listry’s Ruairí Murphy (1-6) while Paul O’Shea (1-3) outscored his illustrious cousin David Clifford (0-5, 2f).

Incidentally, David wore the number 31 geansaí, having not been named in the squad of 30. Neither were Jack Sherwood or Paul O’Shea.

East Kerry dictated the first half and led by 12 points to four at half-time. They really turned the screw in the third quarter, scoring 2-4. David was rested for the final 10 minutes while his older brother Paudie is out of action with that long term injury.

Fellow Kerry teammate Killian Spillane gave some hope to Templenoe by scoring 0-9 but ultimately Seán Sheahan’s consolation goal was the best Templenoe could muster on a windy day in

Beaufort.

Rathmore, who had a bye, are next up for East Kerry. The club side will be very keen to erase the disappointment of their last game when they slipped up against Na Gaeil in the second half of the Club Championship semi-final. With the aid of a strong wind in the second half they were odds on to win. That was not their true form, and they will be hoping to show their real worth tomorrow, led by county stars Paul Mur-

phy and Shane Ryan. The latter will wear the number 1 geansaí but will be moving outfield quite a bit, even for the East Kerry kickouts.

East Kerry will be without Kerry star Paudie Clifford and in his absence Rathmore have a chance. Still, East Kerry, with the benefit of an outing last weekend, will be favourites.

One of the ties of the round will see Austin Stacks face Kenmare Shamrocks in Killarney. Both teams ran up massive scores last weekend against Milltown/Castlemaine and North Kerry respectively.

Kenmare get the nod if Seán O’Shea can still manage a big haul of points. In previous games it was clear that he is still hampered by injury. Dónal Down has not made the expected impact after his transfer from Kilgarvan, so they will look to him to add to their scoring options.

With those runaway wins last weekend, did they learn anything from such a one-way traffic? Stacks kicked nine two pointers in the first half against a toiling Milltown/Castlemaine side. It is hard to assess their true worth, but Kenmare should win. They were impressive when they defeated North Kerry 4-15 to 1-12.

They have been very competitive in the past number of years but have faltered when the cup beckoned. They can do the business this time and move on to the semi-final.

Spa produced their best display this season and ran up a big score of 3-13 to defeat South Kerry in their Round 1 clash in Glenbeigh. Cian Tobin was in splendid form, shooting 10 points. Both sides led at different stages, but it was Spa who finished the stronger with two magnificent Tobin two pointers. Gary Vaughan was a powerhouse for Spa, sealing off the centre back position and coming forward to great effect.

However, Mid Kerry will be high on confidence after beating Crokes, and I expect them to advance.

Dingle had most of their players back (apart from Barry Dan O’Sullivan) versus Na Gaeil and they were in complete control. In the end they ran out comfortable 2-19 to 1-13 winners. Injuries to key players meant an uphill battle for the Tralee side.

Dingle went on a scoring spree in the first half, leading 2-15 to 1-6 – a whopping 15-point half-time lead. The men from the west were hugely disappointed to lose to Dr Crokes in last year’s county final and will be very keen to make amends this season.

They would love another opportunity to represent Kerry in the Munster Club Championship after that rain-soaked debacle against Castlehaven a few seasons back.

Their opponents in the quarters, West Kerry, will have nine of the Gaeltacht’s Intermediate-winning side and local rivalry will be a big factor. Still, I expect Dingle to win.

Mid Kerry shock Dr Crokes in Round 1

Mid Kerry knocked reigning champions Dr Crokes out of the 2025 Kerry SFC in a tight affair in Tralee on Saturday. The margin was just two points, 3-8 to 0-15, but it sufficed. The district side were the better team on the night and deserved their win.

Glenbeigh/Glencar's Liam Smith was the standout player over the hour. A big, strong, sure midfielder, he dominated the centre of the park and provided the opportunities for Mid Kerry to hammer in three goals. Those strikes were crucial.

Conditions were very difficult with a howling gale blowing into the Killarney end and three bad hail showers.

Mid Kerry had the strong wind in that first half and kicked into the lead from

the second minute. They were never behind from that moment on. An O’Connor goal gave them an interval lead of 1-6 to 0-4. Would it be enough to claim victory?

Crokes did draw level, mainly thanks to Tony Brosnan’s two pointers. He shot eight points in the second half, adding to one other point in the first half. One expected Crokes to kick on.

Instead, Mid Kerry refused to die even when Crokes drew level.

In a blistering four-minute spell, Eoin Clifford and Ciarán Kennedy produced what counted as match winning goals. Crokes substitute Alex Hennigan made it a one-point game, but they could not snatch an equaliser.

Mid Kerry have been in three county finals in the past decade and lost all three to East Kerry. If they keep im-

proving, this may well be their turn to lift the Bishop Moynihan Cup. Their defence was superb and the only two real chances Dr Crokes had to score goals was when Cian McMahon blazed a shot over the bar and when Kerry player Mike Breen made a full body block down on Micheál Burns. Crokes were without Brian Looney, their talisman for the past two decades, and it was noticeable that he was missed so much, for the kickouts in particular. What a record by Looney, who started and played all of Crokes Championship games for the past 20 years. Consistent. Classy. Mid Kerry also had injury problems. Centre forward Hassett, a key man, was a loss. Even if both teams were at full strength, I believe Mid Kerry would have won.

Kerry FC manager Colin Healy suggested the referee was guilty of making a hometown decision after Shamrock Rovers’ star Graham Burke avoided a red card in the first half of the FAI Cup semi-final on Sunday.

In a game that favourites Rovers eventually won 6-1, the League of Ireland kingpins were 2-0 up when Burke – the scorer of both their goals up that point –was involved in a flashpoint on the sideline with Kerry player Joe Adams. Adams took Burke down with a sliding tackle and the Rovers’ talisman reacted angrily, forcefully pushing the Kerry midfielder’s head into the ground. He then made a second movement with his hands towards Adams’ head before being ushered away by the linesman and his own manager, Stephen Bradley. It seemed like a red card was imminent, but referee Paul McLaughlin booked Adams, Burke and Kerry’s Ronan Teahan, who confronted Burke after the incident. Twenty-five-time cup winners Rovers went on to put four more goals past First Division side Kerry, who were contesting a semi-final for the first time. Adams scored Kerry’s only goal from the spot after Daniel Okwute was tripped in the box.

Speaking to Tony O’Donoghue in a post-match interview on RTÉ, the Kerry boss was eager to discuss the matter. When O’Donoghue mentioned Burke’s name, Healy interjected: “Are you going to mention the time that he…?" O’Donoghue confirmed that he was about to do just that.

‘It’s a red card and we all know it’

Kerry boss Healy left frustrated

“The tackle by Joe, okay, it’s a yellow card,” Healy continued, “but you can’t put your hands on one of the players like that and get away with it. I suppose you don’t make decisions like that in Tallaght, do you? No, but listen, you can’t be doing that to other players. If it was one of our lads, it’s probably a red card. I think they’ve got it wrong on that one.

“I don’t think it was the turning point but there’s a decision there to be made. You can see the reaction of Stephen Bradley by dragging Burke away from [Joe]. And we’ve seen it. He’s put his hands on his head. Twice. That’s a red card. You can’t be doing what he did and get away with. You can’t.

“It’s always going to be difficult. We know the quality that they have. But if that’s in any other game it’s a red card. And we all know it. Let’s not kid ourselves here. You cannot be doing that.

“Rovers are probably the best Irish team in the past seven years. They’ve reached such high levels and that’s a

by referee’s decision

credit to Stephen Bradley. We knew what we were coming into. Obviously we need a small bit of help. We didn’t get that.

“We always want more. It’s a tough one to take but it’s a good learning [experience] for our players. They had a lot of possession. Burke and Mandroiu and these players are quality. We probably didn’t track runners and if you don’t track runners you’ll get punished.

“It was a tough game but we were up against a quality side. The players will take learnings from it and the level that Shamrock Rovers are at is an eye-opener for our lads. They’re still young. They’re still learning the game. But I’m proud of them and I’m proud of the support. It was a big ask for us but overall we’re proud.

“They never gave up. They kept going.” The Dubliners will now advance to the FAI Cup final which takes place on November 9 at the Aviva Stadium. Their opponents will be a Cork City outfit who defeated St Patrick’s Athletic 3-1 in the other semi-final.

Impressive win for St Paul’s on opening night

Coach Fleming hails O’Shea as Kerry star posts double double

St Paul’s head coach James Fleming paid tribute to Síofra O’Shea after the dual star made a telling contribution in his side’s opening day victory over the SETU Waterford Wildcats.

The South Kerry woman, who also lines out for the Kerry ladies’ football team, had a double double for the Killarney outfit as they defeated the Wildcats by 12 points (63-75) in Waterford.

“I'm delighted with the win,” Fleming told club PRO Enda Walshe. “We played well in patches and moved it well on offence. I thought Síofra was excellent for us – 10 points and 13 rebounds is some input. It's early days but it's great to get a win on the road.

“We have a good team spirit within the group and hopefully we can continue to improve.”

Last season’s beaten Super League finalists face a tough schedule in the opening weeks of the campaign with four of their first five fixtures being away from home, but they got the perfect start in the southeast on Saturday.

New signings Maisie Burnham, Lovisa Hevinder and Tara Cousins combined for 53 points to grab the scoring headlines, but O’Shea’s points and rebounds tally was also key. Lorraine Scanlon was not too far behind her in terms of rebounds; she grabbed 11.

Leah McMahon chipped in with some big baskets when needed while Lynn Jones yet again showed that she is a timeless wonder.

Burnham led the scoring for St Paul’s with 23, followed by Tara Cousins (19), Lovisa Hevinder (11), Síofra O’Shea (10), Lorraine Scanlon (7) and Leah McMahon (5).

The result certainly lays down a marker to the rest of the league with some big clashes coming up in the weeks ahead. Next up is another away match against Portlaoise on Sunday. The game tips off at 3pm.

Meanwhile, the St Paul’s men’s team, who are now going by ‘Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers’, were defeated 68-90 by the Titans of Galway in their first fixture of the National League Division 1 season. This was a tough opening night for St Paul’s head coach Luke O'Hea as his side ran into a Titans team in imperious form. The Westerners had Fortune Igbokwe supplying the brawn and Uma

Rashid the silk, while Brian Gaffney and Matthew Sweeney delivered some welltimed blows from beyond the arc.

The Lakers only struck for eight points in the first quarter and thirteen in the second, so the game was really done by half-time. The radar for their outside shots wasn't tuned in at this stage but, to give the Killarney men credit, they showed great character in the second half. It will be that spell that coach O’Hea will be looking to build on for the trip to Ulster University this weekend.

Newcomers Steve Kelly and Sam Grant made their debuts for the club. Kelly was Paul’s top scorer with 27 points as Sam Grant (11), Pablo Murcia, Mark Sheehan, Eoin Carroll (all 8), Marco Bencic (4) and Oisín Spring (2) also contributed to the their final tally of 68. For the Titans, Rachid was the game MVP on 28.

Jordanstown will be the venue for this Saturday’s tie against Ulster University, which gets underway at 4.30pm.

The men from the north were unlucky to lose out to Tolka Rovers on opening night and in Prince Ebwea they seem to possess a potent weapon.

Darragh Ferguson is another one to watch alongside Max Postiglione. The Lakers will have to be at their best if they are to pick up their first points of the season.

SCORERS: St Paul's players

Maisie Burnham and Tara Cousins combined for 42 points against the Wildcats.

I thought Síofra was excellent for us – 10 points and 13 rebounds is some input.

New-look Cougars set for home opener

The countdown is on for the Killarney Cougars as they prepare for their first home game of the 2025/26 National League Division 1 season.

With fresh faces in their ranks, the Cougars are determined to build on the progress they’ve made in recent years. The squad has leaned heavily on its young core with local players gaining valuable experience and improving steadily over the past few seasons.

While consistency proved a challenge against the league’s top teams, the Cougars have never lacked fight or intensity. Now, with a couple of years’ worth of development under their belts, the returning group will aim to turn hard-earned lessons into results.

The club have made two significant signings in the off-season. Player/coach Jackson Ryan arrives in Killarney after a standout rookie season with the Waterford Vikings, where he averaged an impressive 19.0 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 4.3 APG, and 1.5 SPG. Originally from Connecticut, Jackson enjoyed a successful college ca-

PLAYER/COACH: Jackson Ryan has taken on a dual role with the KIllarney Cougars.

reer at Haverford College (NCAA), where his leadership and two-way play made him a cornerstone of the programme. In Ireland, his impact was immediate, impressively combining scoring ability with defensive toughness.

Off the court, Jackson is already an accomplished coach, having worked with the Limerick Sport Eagles, Huskies, and Limerick Lions youth teams. His dual role as player and coach in Killarney will bring strategy and vision to this young squad.

The Cougars are equally thrilled to welcome London-born guard/forward Simon Olanipekun, who joins after a strong university and National League career. At the University of Portsmouth, Simon made an immediate impact as a scholarship athlete, winning league promotion and a national championship in his first season. He also trained with the London Lions, sharing the court with stars like Justin Robinson and DeAndre Liggins, which helped to sharpen his all-around game.

In the National League with Portsmouth Force, Simon twice earned Team MVP honours (2022–23 and 2024–25) and finished runner-up in the League MVP race last season. Fresh out of university, he now takes the next step in Killarney, bringing athleticism, scoring ability, and leadership to the Cougars’ roster.

Returning players Nathan Cox, Aaron Buckley, Adam Linehan will play an important role, while youth players Lucas Cronin, Evan Cox, Conor O'Mahony and Jack Spillane will contribute energy and enthusiasm while gaining valuable experience at senior level. Further additions to the roster will be newcomers Elvis Mesters and Josh Vermiglio.

Coach Jackson has also confirmed a late signing of 6'10" Kenny Shimwa from Nottingham Hood to bolster the squad before the season opening home game on Saturday. Team North West make the long journey south from Donegal to the Presentation Gym Killarney to face the Cougars with a tip-off time of 7.30pm.

Members honoured at Fossa Rowing awards night

Last Saturday night Fossa Rowing Club held their end-of-season awards night at the Old Killarney Inn in Aghadoe.

There was a huge turnout with club members and rowers young and old enjoying an evening of reflection, celebrations and great craic.

Fossa Rowing Club chairman Steve Blen-

nerhasset got proceedings underway by thanking everyone for their hard work and dedication all season before handing the microphone to former Olympic rower Paul Griffin. Paul gave a fantastic speech about his own rowing career and how he started out with Fossa and represented Ireland. His message was truly inspiring for the underage crews who absorbed every word.

Paul then presented certificates to all underage crews along with coach Conor Coffey before the youngsters themselves, with Adam Murphy on the microphone, made presentations of hoodies to their hard-working coaches as a ‘thank you’ for all their dedication throughout the season.

The parish league winners were presented with their trophies before the ladies’

section made presentations to their crews. All in all it was a truly fun night, with wonderful music by Colcannon. The club expressed their gratitude to Kevin and all the crew at the Old Killarney Inn for looking after everyone, to all who worked hard to organise the night, and to everyone who attended. Such a great night of celebration was a wonderful way to finish off the season.

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP: Senior A Result - Tralee Dynamos 4-2 Killarney Athletic. Nathan Cronin x 1, Brian O’Shea x 1. U17 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 2-2 Tralee Dynamos. Darragh O’Donoghue x 1 Leo Allen x 1. Our U17s got their season off the mark when we welcomed Tralee Dynamos to Woodlawn on Saturday afternoon. A pretty even first half playing against a strong wind saw us go in 0-1 down at half time after Dynamos scored late in the first half. The second half saw us come out fast and a super move was cooly finished by Darragh O’Donoghue. We took the lead soon after when the excellent Adam Moynihan broke down the left and Leo finished from close range. We looked to have taken the points only to concede in the 90th minute and things could have been worse only for a super save from keeper Dylan McAuliffe to keep it at 2-2.

U15 PREMIER: Castleisland 3-3 Killarney Athletic. Sean Quill x 2, Gerry Moroney x1. BOYS U13 DIVISION 1: LB Rovers A 2-3 Killarney Athletic B. Daniel Cremin x 1, Oisin O’Sullivan x 2. The boys headed to Ballyduff Saturday evening for a late kick at 5pm. When they arrived, they quickly realised this was going to be a tough one the wind was howling. Athletic got a bit of luck and won the toss and decided to play with the extremely strong wind in the first half. After about 10 mins Daniel Cremin put us one nil up with a fantastic free kick into the top right-hand corner of the net. The boys really worked hard and got a deserved second from Oisin O’Sullivan to go into the break two goals to the good. We started the second half the stronger of the two teams and after about 5 mins Oisin got his second to give us a three-nil lead. LB started to use the wind to their advantage and got one back and with 10 mins to go they got their second. They boys showed great strength of character with some luck thrown in to hold out for a great win. They really put everything into this game, and it was great to see them get their well-deserved rewards. We like to thank LB for a fantastic game played in a great manner. Also we would like to thank the Ref. U16 GIRLS NATIONAL CUP: Charleville AFC 2-3 Killarney Athletic. Lillian Slattery x 1 Ella Murphy x 2.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR B MEN: Our Senior B Team had a great win in the McElligott Cup Shield Final on Saturday afternoon in Fossa. A very young team mixed with a few more experienced players defended well and scored two excellent goals in the first half to lead by 2-4 to 0-5 at half time. A more clinical display up front in the second half saw the team work some great scores to run out deserving winners. Captain Dan Carroll accepted the Shield on behalf of the team. Well done to the team and management, and thanks to Kilcummin for a great game as always. Final score Killarney Legion 3-12 Kilcummin 0-14.

2005 INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONS: 20

Years on from lifting the Kerry Intermediate Championship, the team of 2005 had a reunion in Murphys Bar last Friday night. The final, played in Austin Stack Park, saw them defeat a Paul Galvin inspired Finuge. The team met up for a night out to celebrate that great win. It was brilliant to catch up with old friends, share memories, and enjoy a few pints together. It was a great night and a great get-together.

U15 LADIES: On a blustery Wednesdays evening at John Mitchels GAA, the U15 ladies took to the pitch for the Division 2 Final against a strong Churchill side. Facing into a stiff breeze and playing on a heavy surface in the first half, Legion set up defensively and showed great composure to keep Churchill scoreless for the opening 9 minutes. Churchill soon found their rhythm with some well-timed runs and took full advantage, clocking up scores quickly. However, the girls

didn’t back down, and in true battling spirit, responded with two superb goals and lifted the team. Despite Churchill’s pressure, Legion stayed in the contest with grit and determination. At halftime, the scoreboard 2-0 to 3-5 in Churchills favour. The second half saw a renewed energy and with the wind dying down, the girls emerged bravely – even with some fresh knocks to the back line – and showed incredible heart. They chipped away at Churchill’s lead with well-earned scores, cutting the deficit to just four points at one stage. Unfortunately, an injury to one of our key midfielders disrupted momentum. Still, they continued to fight until the final whistle. In the end, it wasn’t quite enough, as Churchill held on for a hard-fought win, with the match finishing 4-3 to 4-8. Despite the result, every Legion player should hold their head high. The girls gave it everything in the final and throughout a busy and successful season. Their effort, teamwork, and resilience were second to none. A big thank you to referee Jason O’Brien for officiating, to all our loyal supporters who turned out in numbers, and to Churchill for a sporting and competitive final. Finally, a huge thanks to Four Star Pizza for their generous support on the night – it was very much appreciated. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to our girls who sustained injuries on the night.

Fossa GAA

EAST KERRY U14 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Fossa 3-09 Dr Crokes 5-05. The curtain come down on our Under 14 boy's season when they entertained our town neighbours Dr Crokes in a gripping U14 Final. The final was played on a pristine pitch in Gortroe at noon before a large vocal crowd. The Crokes made a blistering start to the game and within minutes had raced into an early 1-01 to no score lead. The hosts were slow to start but eventually got on the scoreboard with a well taken Shea Driver free. Then in the 12th

minute Johnny Myers was pulled down in the square resulting in a penalty for Fossa. Shea Driver calmly slotted home the dead ball to give us a lifeline before half time. Both defences were on top for the remainder of the half and at the short whistle the scoreboard read Fossa 1-03, Dr Crokes 1-04. Fossa would play with the advantage of the slight breeze for the 2nd period, but such advantages rarely win games for you. Dr Crokes struck for two early goals on the re-start and now it was do or die for our lads, but to a man they lifted their game as we knew they would. Shea Driver converted two more tricky frees and these were followed by three fantastic individual points from the boots of Aaron O'Sullivan, Gerry Moroney and Shea Driver. Fossa were now on top, but totally against the run of play Crokes were awarded a penalty which they duly scored. Fossa were now driving forward in waves at the opposition and as Johnny Myers bore down on goals he was once more pulled down. Up stepped captain fantastic Shea Driver yet again and smashed the ball into the Crokes net to leave only 3 points between the sides. Unfortunately for Fossa, the town boys were not for giving up and they immediately responded with a goal of their own to stretch their lead out to 6 points. The game was now being played at a frantic pace from end to end. Fossa sharpshooter Ryan Lynch kicked a beautiful point off his left and within seconds he had the crowd on their feet when he calmed finished to the net. There was now only 2 points separating the teams as the clocked ticked towards full time, Fossa had one last attack which unfortunately broke down and with that the referee blew the final whistle on an epic encounter. On the day Fossa didn't get the rub of the green, and a few decisions went against our lads, but they never gave up and died in their boots for the cause as always. Overall, an excellent season for our U14 boys, to reach 3 finals. Winning an East Kerry League and losing a County and East Kerry Championship Final by the narrowest of margins. Well done to these mighty young men, remember the names, they will be back. Fossa Abu. Fossa scorers: Shea Driver 2-05, Ryan Lynch 1-01, Aaron O'Sullivan 0-01, Gerry Moroney 0-01, David Kennelly 0-01.

Kilcummin GAA

EAST KERRY: Five of our Senior team played pivotal roles for East Kerry in the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior county championship on Saturday in their 3-23 to 1-10 win over Templenoe. There were starts for Daragh O’Callaghan, Paul O’Shea and Philip O’Leary while Matt Keane and Sean O’Leary were both introduced on the 40th minute. Paul O’Shea capped a fine performance scoring 1-3 while Philip O’Leary and Matt Keane both scored a point in a very one side performance. East Kerry will now play Rathmore in the Quarter Final next Saturday 11th October

with a 2pm throw in at Fitzgerald Stadium.

JUNIORS: There was no joy for our juniors in the McElligott Shield Final on Sunday afternoon when they were defeated 3-12 to 0-14 by Killarney Legion at Fossa. UNDER 14: Hard luck to our Under 14 boys who just finished up short to Scartaglen on Sunday in the East Kerry Under 14 Division 1 final. In the end, Scart ran out 3-14 to 4-9 winners after an entertaining affair in which both sides gave it their all throughout. Despite opening the scoring through a fine Darragh Fleming score it was Scart that took the early initiative as they went 1-3 to 0-1 ahead after 15 minutes. A Max Moynihan point halted the flow of scores before Conor Gallivan added a fine point free. Back-to-back goals by Moynihan ensured the bare minimum at the break 2-5 to 2-4 with Scart leading the way. Moynihan levelled up matters on the restart before Conor Gallivan put Kilcummin ahead. Dan Barry saved off the line as the winners were held at bay before they found the next three scores as they began to kick on. A third Moynihan goal kept Kilcummin in touch 2-11to 3-7. On the 50th minute Scart struck for a third goal, but another Moynihan goal pegged them back to 3-14 to 4-8 heading into the final moments of this enthralling contest and despite a late free Kilcummin were unable to gain parity ahead of the full-time whistle. Well done to all the players and management for efforts throughout the season.

CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL: Congratulations to Kilcummin N.S who qualified from their group stages of Cumann na mBunscol into the County knock out stages. The win sees him secure both the Club Strokeplay and Club Matchplay in the space of a week, the first player in the club to do so since Colm ‘Chopper’ O’Donoghue back in 2013. Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

SUNDAY: While the weather impacted our plans for a competition last Saturday, conditions mellowed for Sunday, and we were delighted to be able to fish the Tom Bambury Memorial on Lough Lein. Despite the rising lake waters and the old adage that it does not lend itself to good fishing conditions, 18 of the 25 participants recorded keepable trout which was an exceptionally good return. Suffice to say there were plenty of smiling faces at the weigh in shed in Ross after the days competition. The top five rods on the day were as follows: 1) Boris Uzik. 2) Liam Buckley. 3) Tim O’Connor. 4) Tim Ryan. 5) Anthony Griffin. Heaviest Trout went to the rod of Paul Lawton.

POINTS: The Angler of the Year points race, with one remaining competition, has Anthony Griffin now on 45 points with Liam Buckley chasing closely on 41 - a duel to be decided when we fish for the Michael Fleming Cup on Saturday 11th of October. The season closed on the evening of the 12th so hopefully we will get the weather over the weekend. Boats will leave shore at 1030 and landed for 5.30pm, weigh in directly afterwards at the shed in Ross.

COMPETITION: The ITFFA youths interprovincial competition in Mullingar, with Club Competitor Chris Sanbak, fell foul to the weather last weekend and at present there are hopes to run it off on Sunday the 12th if boats and boatmen are available.
