Presidential candidates hit the campaign trail in Killarney

Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys and Fianna Fail candidate Jim Gavin overlapped on the campaign trail last week when they both travelled to Kerry. Both candidates began their journey in Killarney, making their way to Tralee and Listowel afterwards.

Heather Humphreys took a quick trip on a jaunting cart before heading to Muckross House where she was formally endorsed by Minister Michael Healy-Rae.

Having already publicly backed her a few weeks ago, Minister Healy-Rae stated:

“She is the best placed person to become the next President of Ireland”.

Reflecting on her time as Minister for Culture, she said she was proud to support Muckross House and the refur-

bishment of Killarney House during her tenure.

She said: “I believe the President can play an important role in terms of opening doors for Irish business overseas as well as promoting our tourism sector. I was proud as Minister for Arts to work to ensure that Star Wars filming could take place on Skellig Michael which was a huge boost to the local tourism sector in Kerry. I want to use the Presidency to

identify more opportunities like that for our country.”

Later, she visited St Francis Special School in Beaufort where she met with Principal Colin O’Sullivan and the students. Sean Kelly MEP stopped by to wish her well on the campaign.

Meanwhile, Jim Gavin met with voters while walking the streets of Killarney. During a stop outside Mike’s Takeaway, he rolled up his sleeves to lend a hand.

Glamping pods set to open at racecourse

15 new glamping pods will arrive at Killarney Racecourse by April 2026. Five of those units are set to open by the end of this year.

Locals Linda and Mike O’Sullivan founded Killarney Glamping in 2012, and it has grown from strength to strength ever since. Their first site, located in Ballycasheen, is called Glamping at the Grove, and received a Fáilte Ireland 4-star rating in 2024 and 2025. The expansion of their business will see their employees rise from 7 to 12. The pods will be fully self-contained and spacious with luxury bathrooms, king size beds, sitting areas and kitchenettes. Each pod has been built in Killarney by local tradespeople and materials are sustainable and locally

sourced. Guests can walk or cycle to Killarney town centre in under ten minutes or explore the National Park by bike. Linda O’Sullivan, owner of Killarney Glamping, described the site as luxurious yet sustainable. She said: “People want an experience that feels special and delivers all the comforts they love, and this new site captures that spirit right in the heart of Ireland’s leading tourist destination.” There was an 8.2% increase in Irish residents’ domestics trips in 2024 compared with 2023, with the Southern region accounting for 43% of all trips.

Local postman nominated for national An Post award

Connie was nominated after he performed a quiet act of kindness. On his daily delivery route, he stops by O’Shea’s funeral home. When a loved one is cremated, the family can either collect the ashes from Cork themselves or have them respectfully delivered to Killarney. On the day in question, Connie arrived with such a delivery to an unoccupied office. Instead of leaving the package, he

took it back with him to the post office on New Street. When questioned by branch manager Sean Byrne on why he didn’t deliver it, Connie replied: “You should never leave the dead alone.” Sean later shared the story with An Post colleagues. The simple act of waiting, of refusing to treat human remains as just another delivery struck a chord. Management at An Post were so moved by Connie’s integrity and instinctive respect that he was nominated for the national award. Soon, Connie and his wife Mary will head up to Dublin together for a special ceremony at the GPO, celebrating the best of An Post.

Chamber members hear from Council CEO at luncheon

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce held their quarterly luncheon last Tuesday with Kerry County Council CEO Fearghal Reidy in attendance.

The gathering of Killarney business owners took place at the Muckross Park Hotel. The attendees were informed that the new Kerry-Cork corridor, which involves the construction of a major road from Farranfore to Killarney, could commence within a five-year period. He explained that €2 million was provided to advance the project last year with another €1 million approved this year. Mr Reidy advised that negotiations have taken place with Irish Rail regarding the provision of more frequent rail services for Kerry and there has been significant investment in local and national roads. He outlined several key priorities for Kerry County Council which included housing, climate action and tourism. He

also spoke about the South Kerry Greenway which is set to be operational within the next six months and explained there is an ambitious overall greenway strategy planned to connect the entire county.

Mr Reidy said that Kerry will be a topclass greenway destination. He praised the council outdoor staff in Killarney and expressed his pride at the work they do.

He said: “I walked the streets of Killarney at 8.15am this morning and the outdoor staff were cleaning, planting and doing brilliant work. Killarney has a great reputation for its Tidy Towns work and for being so well presented.” The attendees were advised to voice opinions, good or bad, to ensure improvements are always being made.

Amelia Counihan crowned as 2025 Regatta Queen

The annual Killarney Regatta Dance took place on September 25 as rowers, families and supporters came together to celebrate their successful year.

The racing was cancelled in September due to bad weather. The Killarney Regatta is one of Ireland’s oldest rowing events, having first begun in 1788. The dance took place at the Killarney Oaks Hotel where there was a lot of excitement and fun. Six rowing clubs, Fossa, Workman’s, St Brendan’s, Commer-

cials, Flesk Valley, and Muckross, came together to celebrate the community and its shared history. Amelia Counihan was crowned as the Regatta Queen. The Queen represents the spirit, pride and grace of the rowing community and has been a tradition in the club for generations. Workman’s Rowing Club congratulated Amelia and described her as a woman who embodies everything that their tradition stands for. The club said: “Queen is more than a title — it is a celebration of history, community, and the spirit of Killarney rowing.”

Transport Minister quizzed on pedestrian bridge at train station

A Kerry TD has highlighted the urgent need for a pedestrian connection between Killarney’s train and bus stations with the Minister for Transport in the Dáil.

Deputy Michael Cahill has described it as a key issue for tourists and locals. According to the Minister for Transport, a recent review by Iarnród Éireann identified a new pedestrian bridge as the preferred option, spanning two tracks and landing on the main platform. The South Kerry TD said he has already discussed

a few options with senior management at Iarnród Eireann and is due to meet them again on October 6. He said: “On the agenda will include engagement with the owners of the adjacent retail centre, with a view to thrashing out all possible solutions. This is an important issue for Killarney, as the town hosts approximately one million visitors annually, not to mind the numbers of local commuters who need to link bus and train journeys in either direction”. He is happy to facilitate these discussions and says he will continue to push for a suitable outcome.

Killarney brothers win safety award for fundraising efforts

Killarney brothers Gary and Conor O’Sullivan won the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Community Safety Award at the Rose Hotel on Friday night.

The brothers have been involved in fundraising for Killarney First Responders, Brú Columbanus and the Michael Lenihan Heartsafe Campaign. They also began a fundraiser to install a defibrillator in Whitebridge Manor. CPR saved their older brother Sean Óg after he suddenly collapsed at home on April 6. Gary, Sean and their dad performed CPR which kept him alive until the ambulance arrived. As a result of

this, the O’Sullivan family learned of a genetic heart defect called Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy HCH which Gary and his mom have since been diagnosed with.

Conor and Gary have taken it upon themselves to promote the importance of being CPR and Defibrillator aware and trained.

Their aunt Anne Holland nominated her nephews for their hard work fundraising and keeping the greater community informed on the importance of CPR. Gary and Connor and the O'Sullivan family are worthy recipients of the 27th Annual Kerry Garda Community Safety Award.

Brian Murphy, Lead Partner for Ireland’s Best Managed Companies Awards Programme, congratulated the winners. He said: “Irish indigenous businesses continue to impress, demonstrating unwavering resilience and commitment to excellence in an everchanging economic landscape.”

Not every road leads to Dublin. Some lead from Killarney to Cork, then London, and back again – with a stop to perform in front of Lizzo and Harry Styles along the way. I had the pleasure of photographing Liam Bee at a recent local event. The art of make-up struck me before anything else. So, when I heard Liam Bee was one of our own, i.e. Liam Kelleher from Woodlawn, it was a must for me to talk drag, makeup, resilience, and how a quiet kid from a Kerry town ended up living their dream – with a little help from RuPaul, BPerfect Cosmetics, and one very supportive Killarney family.

Tell me about young Liam growing up in Killarney.

Shy. Very shy. Like “can’t-read-aloud-inclass” shy. I was introverted, anxious, and definitely not out. But looking back, that quietness taught me how to observe, reflect, and eventually express myself. Killarney is beautiful, but when you're growing up different, it can feel isolating. Still, it gave me resilience and a thick skin, which is helpful when you're gluing rhinestones to your face at all hours. So how did drag come into your life? Believe it or not through my Mam! She was watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, and I remember walking in like, “What is this?!” It was weird to me at the time but clearly it stuck! Years later, when I went to art college in Cork, I started experimenting with looks inspired by the Blitz Kids of ‘80s London and the New York Club Kids. My first drag performance was in a competition. Mam sewed the costume from scratch. She still helps with my outfits but that one was special. I was terrified... and then I won. That was it. I was in love with drag.

What does drag mean to you now?

Drag is my art, my outlet and strangely enough, my career ladder. It’s the reason I was hired as the Irish representative for BPerfect Cosmetics. Now I travel all over Ireland and England as a makeup artist and educator. Painting faces has become my day job, and I am grateful that drag opened these doors I didn’t even know were in the building.

Considering the time and effort it takes many ladies to rock up at an event looking effortless, I’m struggling to imagine the prep at such an extravagant level AND hold down a jet setting 9-5? 90% of what happens is before the show even starts. Booking venues, coordinating tech, styling wigs, designing posters,

managing socials and hot-gluing feathers to corsets at 2am. It’s a full production. Drag taught me everything from event planning to public speaking. I also learned that “yes” isn’t always the right answer. Burnout is real. Living in London showed me that. It also made me fall in love with Ireland all over again, especially Killarney.

Has your family always been supportive?

They’re incredible. I suppose maybe not all sparkles at first, but they’ve always shown up. Mam makes my costumes. Dad’s helped build sets. My younger brother is my biggest fan. Even my grandmother in Abbeydorney follows my gigs! Recently, a whole gang of aunts, uncles, and cousins came to see me perform at the Everyman Theatre in Cork. That support means more than I’ll ever be able to

put into words.

But it hasn’t all been sequins and standing ovations, has it?

No. Drag still attracts hate sometimes. I’ve had people share photos of me in school group chats, make awful comments, even threaten my life. I’ve been spat on, kicked, beaten. All because of a costume. But I’ve never wanted to stop. If anything, it’s made me more determined. Drag taught me what real resilience looks like. Glitter is more than decoration, it’s armour.

A little bird tells me you’ve performed in front of some big names. Do tell... I’ve had some pinch-me moments! I opened for Bambi Thug – our Eurovision star – at The Academy in Dublin. I’ve performed at ‘Mother Pride Block Party’ in front of thousands and taken the stage

in Berlin. But the moment that still feels completely surreal? Performing in front of Lizzo and Harry Styles in London. I mean – these are artists I’ve idolised. I’ve belted out Good as Hell at the top of my lungs and danced like no one was watching to Treat People With Kindness. And suddenly, they were the ones watching me. I was thinking, “Enjoy this moment, keep breathing, and pretend this is totally normal.” It wasn’t. It was unreal. What’s your vision for the future of Irish drag?

More visibility. More platforms. Not just in Dublin. There’s so much talent in smaller towns; it just needs the right space to grow. I’d love an Irish version of Drag Race (RTE2, I’m looking at you!). And more people like Annette Roche Clifford did recently in organising the Killarney event. She claims she was tired wearing out the road to Cork to see my friends and I perform. Her energy is the kind we need in more rural communities.

Some final words for young LGBTQ+ people growing up in rural Ireland Liam? If I can go from being too anxious to speak in school to performing in front of thousands, you can too. Your path might look different and that’s the point. Different is where the magic lives. To the parents: You don’t need to understand everything right away. That comes later. What matters most is love and acceptance. Celebrate your child. That’s what my parents did, and it changed everything.

Liam’s journey proves that greatness doesn’t need a city skyline – it just needs courage, sequins, and sometimes, a mam with a sewing machine. From Woodlawn to the world stage, Liam's story is a reminder that your most powerful path is the one where you get to be fully yourself – glue gun, glitter, and all.

Do you know someone who makes a real difference in our community?

Someone who steps up when others step back.

A person who creates connection, kindness, and positive change.

Now’s your chance to shine a light on their efforts.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER:

St Paul’s Basketball Club celebrates 40 years of legacy

The Killarney Avenue Hotel was abuzz with joy and nostalgia last Saturday night as St Paul’s Basketball Club marked a magnificent milestone – 40 years of sporting spirit, community, and camaraderie.

The evening was a heartfelt tribute to the club’s founding members and a celebration of its enduring legacy.

Formed in 1985, the club has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of Killarney’s sporting life.

In a touching moment, six of the original founders – Rory O’Flaherty, Christy Sheehan, Joey Sheehan, Paul Sheehan, Seamus O’Doherty, and Tom Looney –were honoured with specially commissioned certificates, a gesture of deep appreciation for their vision and dedication. Representing the late Sean Coleman and Donal O’Doherty were their proud fami-

ly members, ensuring their memory was warmly woven into the night’s celebrations.

As the saying goes, “When drinking the water, never forget those who sunk the well.” That sentiment rang true throughout the evening, with over 180 guests gathering to pay tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for today’s thriving club.

Guests were treated to a sumptuous meal before turning their attention to those who have worn the club’s colours on the international stage. The evening also shone a spotlight on the

torchbearers of recent years, with special recognition awards presented to those who continue to drive the club forward with passion and pride.

Guiding the night with charm and wit were MCs Niall 'Botty' O’Callaghan and Enda Walshe, whose seamless hosting ensured the evening flowed beautifully. And when the formalities were done, the dance floor came alive as DJ Brendan Fuller spun tunes that had young and old dancing into the wee hours.

The club also want to thank the organising committee for orchestrating such a memorable event, with a special mention for Patricia McCarthy – whose tireless efforts turned a simple idea into a spectacular celebration.

Here’s to St Paul’s Basketball Club – past, present, and future. May the next 40 years be just as inspiring!

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ST PAUL'S

The legacy is in safe hands with the current officers of the club including founder Paul Sheehan.

The club will move into a new purpose-built sports facility in Dereen next year. The collective work of many over decades is now a reality. The new facility will ensure that the club will be able to support the next Killarney generation of basketball players and coaches.

A five-star experience in the heart of Sliabh Luachra

Killarney Pumpkin Farm returns for its fifth year

Killarney Pumpkin Farm, which began in 2021, is located in an idyllic setting, overlooking the Paps of Anu mountains. Now in its fifth year, the farm continues to grow and evolve with each season. People travel from far and wide to experience the unique setting, from ghoulish ghosts and witches’ cottages to corn mazes and pumpkin patches, it’s the perfect Autumn activity for the entire family.

DB, Johnny and Veerpal run the Pumpkin farm alongside their families. It’s very much a family-run business which is a key reason for its continued success. The Killarney Advertiser sat down with DB to see where it all began. The idea for the pumpkin farm originated during the COVID pandemic. With time to brainstorm and plan, it was brought to life the following year.

PREPARATION

Pumpkin planting begins in May. The seeds are first sown into pots inside polytunnels and after a few weeks they are transplanted into the fields. DB explains they are relatively easy to grow; however, they do require plenty of care and attention. He said: “The land out here wouldn’t be great as pumpkins need a lot of sunshine. A lot of Irish pumpkins are grown in the Sunny Southeast [Wexford and Waterford] so every

year is quite different for us. This year has been my best crop yet, thanks to the great weather we had this year.”

SETTING AND HISTORY

The farm is nestled in the heart of Sliabh Luachra, an area known for its rich tradition of music, song and dance. The area is steeped in history and folklore as it lies in the shadow of the Pap mountains. According to legend, Danu, the mother goddess of the one of Ireland’s mythical tribes Tuatha Dé Danann is closely linked to this region. DB explained that for many years Sliabh Luachra was isolated from the rest of the country as the land was considered uninhabitable.

TRADITION

DB explained that they try to blend old traditions in with the new. “A lot of people don’t realise that Halloween began in Ireland originally involving carved turnips. Irish emigrants brought the tradition to America where they discovered pumpkins were easier to carve. Eventually, we imported the pumpkin tradition back here again.” He emphasised the importance of re-educating people about the origins of Halloween, one of the four major Celtic fire festivals. He said: “The Celts believed the New Year started at the darkest part of the winter. They thought there was a 3-foot distance between us and the other world, a parallel

universe. They believed on Halloween, the veil disappeared so the relatives could visit at night. If you didn’t treat your relations well, they played tricks on you, hence trick or treating."

ATTRACTIONS

Every year they add something new to the pumpkin farm to enhance the visitor experience. This year, there is a newly built carnival themed area. DB explained that there is something for everyone.

KCC launches Vape-Free Challenge for first years

Killarney Community College has launched a new Vape-Free Challenge for incoming firstyear students which is the first initiative of its kind in County Kerry.

The programme aims to promote positive lifestyle choices and raise awareness about the dangers of vaping, which has become a growing concern among young people in Ireland.

The challenge began with a presentation from the Marie Keating Foundation, arranged by guidance counsellor Colin Granfield. Students learned about the serious health risks of vaping, equipping them with the knowledge to make informed choices.

Each student signed a pledge to remain vape-free, act as positive role models, and encourage their peers to make healthy decisions. Parents and guardians were also invited to sign, reinforcing the message at home.

Principal Stella Loughnane praised the initiative: “We are incredibly proud of our first-year students for leading the way in Kerry. This is not just about saying no to vaping, it’s about empowering young people to take ownership of their wellbeing and support one another.”

The school hopes the Vape-Free Challenge will not only reduce vaping among students but also strengthen the partnership between school and home in promoting wellbeing.

Spain targets over fifty thousand illegal rentals

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced plans to remove 53,000 illegal tourist flats from rental platforms, including 6,000 in Málaga province, converting them into long-term housing for young people and families.

Speaking at the University of Málaga, Sánchez said the government had found “thousands of irregularities” in holiday rentals using Spain’s national registry.

“We are going to demand their removal so they become permanent rentals,” he declared. “That is governing for the people.”

The move comes amid a housing crisis, with rents up 80% in a decade and nearly half of tenants spending 40% of income on housing – far above the EU average of 27%.

The government hopes this initiative

will ease pressure on urban housing markets and restore balance to neighborhoods overwhelmed by short-term tourism.

Local reactions have been mixed – some celebrate the shift toward affordability, while others worry about the impact on tourism revenue.

Still, many see it as a necessary step toward making Spanish cities more livable for residents.

Donald Trump's big pay day

It’s another big payday for Donald Trump as YouTube agrees to a $24.5 million settlement over his 2021 account suspension.

President Trump will receive $22 million, which he’s directing toward a new White House ballroom via the Trust for the National Mall. The remaining $2.5 million will go to other plaintiffs, including Naomi Wolf and the American Conservative Union.

This latest deal follows earlier settlements from Meta and X (formerly Twitter), who paid $25 million and $10 million respectively bringing Trump’s total tech-related windfall to nearly $60 million.

Trump’s legal team credits his re-election for the swift resolutions. YouTube, like the others, admitted no wrongdoing but opted to settle rather than face a prolonged legal battle.

California’s attack squirrel goes viral on social media

It’s not every day you see a warning sign for a squirrel — but in San Rafael, California, locals have done just that.

A rogue rodent has been terrorising the neighbourhood, prompting someone to post a dramatic notice: “Attack Squirrel Beware!”.

The sign claims more than five people have been scratched, bitten, or ambushed by the furry menace, who’s apparently lost all fear of humans — likely

thanks to a few too many handouts. While the squirrel remains at large, residents are being advised to keep their snacks (and fingers) to themselves. The story has gone viral, with social media user sharing the poster globally. It’s a reminder that wildlife, no matter how cute, is best admired from a safe distance. Feed them, and they might just come back with attitude.

So next time you spot a local red squirrel eyeing your sandwich down the Demesne — maybe don’t make eye contact!

Shell shock: Over

1,000 illegal oysters

seized in Kenmare Bay

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has confirmed the seizure of more than 1,000 illegally harvested native oysters in Kenmare Bay, a designated Special Area of Conservation.

The incident unfolded last week when IFI officers spotted a large group of individuals hand-picking oysters during low tide .

Acting swiftly, fisheries staff intercepted two vehicles and recovered 612 oysters. A follow-up search uncovered two additional bags, bringing the total haul to over 1,000.

Many of the oysters were found to be undersized — below the legal minimum of 76mm — and unsuitable for licensed

harvesting.

Thankfully, IFI officers were able to return the oyster stock safely to the sea.

Speaking after the operation, Sean Long, IFI’s South-Western Director, praised the team’s efforts:

“We’re pleased our protection officers were able to prevent such a significant loss to the local marine environment.

Kenmare Bay is a vital habitat, and this kind of illegal activity poses a real threat.”

Two vehicles were seized, and a prosecution file is now being prepared against those allegedly involved.

The harvesting of oysters without a licence is a serious offence under Section 277 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act 1959.

Tiny Moldova stands tall against Russian meddling NEWS

In a powerful show of defiance, Moldova — a small nation nestled between Ukraine and Romania — has voted overwhelmingly for Europe, rejecting Russian influence in a landmark election.

President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) secured a clear majority, despite what officials called “unprecedented interference” from Moscow, including vote-buying and disinformation.

The result was warmly welcomed across Europe. Leaders from France, Germany, and Poland praised Moldova’s commitment to democracy, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the vote proved Russia had failed to destabilise the region.

The outcome is seen as a morale boost for Ukraine and a sign that Europe’s

eastern neighbours are resisting Kremlin pressure.

PATH TO EU MEMBERSHIP

With a population of just 2.4 million, Moldova has long been caught between East and West. This election — the most consequential since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 — signals a clear shift toward Brussels.

But challenges remain. PAS must now tackle high inflation, energy costs, and deep divisions in a country still grappling with its identity.

The road to EU membership will be tough, but Moldova has made its direction clear and the results were welcomed by the EU.

European Council President Antonio Costa said Moldovans had “chosen democracy, reform, and a European future.”

overwhelmed, and mobile kitchens and emergency shelters have been set up. Power remains out across much of the region. Heartbreaking scenes unfolded as families searched for loved ones among the rubble.

Civil defence crews continue to dig through landslides, hoping for signs of life. The quake is the deadliest in over a decade, and aftershocks are still being felt.

The club boasts three doubles courts and two singles courts, offering a toptier experience for players of all levels. Padel, a fast-growing sport across Europe, blends elements of tennis and squash and is played in an enclosed court with walls.

It’s known for being social, fast-paced, and easy to learn — making it ideal for beginners and seasoned racket-sport enthusiasts alike.

The new courts are already generating buzz, with locals eager to try something new and active.

“Kerry has been crying out for Padel, and we’re delighted to finally open the doors

and give people a place to play,” said co-founder David O’Brien. Coaching, equipment hire, and online booking are available, making it easy to get started.

Kerry Padel Club aims to build a vibrant padel community in the region, with plans to host events, leagues, and tournaments soon.

Clifford thanks team after Rally Masters success

Clerk of the Course Tim Clifford has paid tribute to his team at Killarney and District Motor Club following the success of last weekend’s Rally Masters event.

The one-day show at Killarney Racecourse was a complete sell-out and marked the first time in more than 20 years that rally cars tackled a stage at the venue. Fifty cars and drivers took part, ranging from Group B icons to modern World Rally Cars, with proceeds going to the Jack & Jill Foundation and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

In a message after the event, Clifford said he had tried several times to draft his thanks, but could not single out individuals. Instead, he thanked every volunteer and club member who played their part.

“From start to finish, each and every one of you played your part in making this event such a success,” Clifford said. “I’m so proud of the teamwork, the spirit, and the effort that went in. Together we’ve shown what KDMC is all about.”

The event also drew huge interest from fans, with thousands packing the Racecourse to see rally cars and drivers rarely seen in Ireland. Stars included Billy Coleman, Andrew Nesbitt, Austin MacHale and Swedish driver Kalle Grundel, alongside a host of local competitors.

The static display also proved popular, featuring cars once driven by Craig Breen, Bertie Fisher, Colin McRae and others, ensuring Rally Masters will be remembered as one of the highlights of the year for motorsport fans.

Rob Duggan makes Rallylegend debut in San Marino

Aghadoe’s Rob Duggan made his debut at Rallylegend in San Marino this week, one of the most high-profile historic rally events in Europe.

The 2016 Billy Coleman Award winner, and a recent winner of the National section of the Rally of the Lakes, took on the rally in his Ford Escort Mk2 alongside Killarney co-driver John McCarthy. It was the first time either man had competed at the famous Italian event.

Rallylegend, began on Thursday with a shakedown and the Sprint Legend Race, is regarded as one of the biggest dates on the international rally calendar, attracting thousands of fans and a star-studded entry list across historic, classic and World Rally Car machinery.

Duggan and McCarthy’s appearance drew particular interest at home, with a

large Kerry contingent travelling to support them.

The pair joined over 200 entries from across Europe, taking in a demanding four-day schedule that includes night stages, exhibition runs, and a huge rally

village in the centre of San Marino. Also representing Kerry at Rallylegend was long-time Kerry Motor Club member Rory Stack. Supported by his clubmates to mark his 50th birthday in the same year that the Circuit of Kerry celebrated its 50th anniversary, Stack is driving a Ford Escort Mk2 with his brother Gene on the notes.

Commercial motor driver numbers to be provided from October 1

Many drivers will be aware of the legalisation brought forward last March where all driver numbers must be provided to insurers before cover can be confirmed.

The next piece of this data exercise commenced on October 1 and requires driver number to be provided for all commercial vehicles including agricultural vehicles, motor traders and fleet owners.

This data forms part of the Road Traffic Acts 2023 and will assist Gardaí at the roadside and ultimately reduce unin-

sured driving in the state.

The data will be collected by insurers and brokers and will be validated and verified before cover can be confirmed. The data will be transferred to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID). This is an important development from a road safety perspective as the key aim of the IMID

database is to remove uninsured drivers from Irish roads. An Garda Síochána have access to the Irish Motor Insurance Database through their Mobility Devices, and can currently detect drivers operating without insurance on Irish roads.

It is important to note that fleet owners and motor traders will also need to upload driver numbers on the National Fleet Database (NFD) at www.nfd.mtpl.ie

Your driver number can be found under section 4D on the plastic driving licences and in field 5 of the older paper licences.

Understanding BERs (Building Energy Ratings)

In today’s property market, making informed decisions is more important than ever.

Whether you're buying your first home, upgrading, or selling a property, one often overlooked factor can significantly influence your decision-making process: the Building Energy Rating (BER). Introduced in Ireland as part of the drive towards greater energy efficiency and sustainability, BER ratings have become a key consideration for buyers, sellers, and estate agents alike.

WHAT IS A BER?

Introduced in 2007, a BER is an energy label for buildings, ranging from A1 (most efficient) to G (least efficient). It reflects the overall energy performance of a home.

This rating is based on several factors, including insulation quality, heating systems, ventilation, windows, and overall building design.

WHY BER RATINGS MATTER TO BUYERS

1. Lower Energy Bills

A higher BER rating usually means lower energy consumption. For example, a house with an A-rating will retain heat better, use more efficient heating systems, and often incorporate renewable energy sources such as solar panels or heat pumps. This translates directly into lower heating and electricity bills.

2. Comfort & Health

Homes with higher BER ratings are typically warmer, less prone to damp or mould, and more comfortable to live in. They’re often better insulated and ventilated, which helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature throughout the year. This not only improves comfort but also reduces the risk of respiratory problems linked to poor air quality and cold, damp environments.

3. Green Mortgages

Many Irish lenders now offer green mort-

gage products, specialised loans with lower interest rates — for buyers purchasing homes with a B3 BER rating or better. These incentives are becoming increasingly popular and can result in substantial savings over the term of a mortgage.

WHY BER RATINGS MATTER TO SELLERS

1. Adds value & marketability

Homes with better BER ratings are more attractive to modern buyers, especially those conscious of sustainability, running costs, and futureproofing. A higher-rated property can command a premium price in the market and typically enjoys faster sales times compared to less energy-efficient counterparts.

2. Legal Requirement

Since 2009, it has been a legal requirement in Ireland to have a valid BER certificate before advertising a property for sale or rent. This certificate must be included in all marketing materials. Not having a BER certificate can delay your

sale, reduce buyer confidence, and even result in legal penalties.

3. Improvements guidance

If you’re planning to sell in the near future but have time to make upgrades, a BER assessment can provide a roadmap for energy improvements. A BER cert will include an Advisory Report, outlining what can be done to improve the rating such as adding attic insulation, upgrading the boiler, etc.

My name is Luke Mangan. I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

This week, our Transition Year student Luke Mangan caught up with one of Kerry FC’s young talents, Luke Doolan. The pair discussed Doolan’s journey in football so far, including his early days with Killarney Athletic to now playing for Kerry FC.

When you were growing up, who was your football or soccer idol, and why? Messi, because he’s the greatest player to play the game.

Who was your childhood hero?

I’d say my father. He helped me a lot throughout my career.

If you weren’t a footballer, what would your dream career be?

I wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to go to space, but somehow, I don’t think that’ll happen now.

What does it feel like to be part of a great team with good support every week?

Rising football star Luke Doolan talks life at Kerry FC

It’s great. The support every week is brilliant. We work hard; the training is very good. We play well every week for a very good club.

What’s it like to have been with your local club, Killarney Athletic, to now being with the green of Kerry?

Killarney Athletic were very good to me. When I was starting off coaches like JP Mullins were fantastic. Then when I went into the seniors, it was great to

have Brendan Moloney and Joe Hurley, who both have a lot of experience.

In a county known for GAA, how does it feel to be such an icon for Kerry soccer?

It feels good. Obviously, Kerry has a big association with the GAA and Kerry FC is new. Soccer is gaining more momentum in the county, which is great to see.

Do you ever see yourself playing in a football game like FIFA sometime?

Yeah, it would be cool to be honest because I play it at home. So yeah, it would be nice to see myself in the game sometime.

Tell me more about your time with Athletic.

I played with great players when I was young, those in my Athletics team and the youths' team. We had some great players there, some of the best in the county. It’s a great team with fantastic coaches involved. Then with my move to Kerry FC, obviously you have Colin [Healy], Conor [McCarthy], Chris [Collopy]. Brilliant coaches who really help me to push my game and get further in my career.

How did it feel to finally get your first minutes for Kerry?

Nerve-wracking but glad to finally get onto the pitch. It took me a while but I’m glad to get minutes. I’ve only been there for a few months now and I’m just grateful to be involved in the squad and to get some minutes in.

You mentioned Brendan Moloney. How did it feel being coached by him? He’s class to be fair. He had some bad injuries which knocked him back in his career. Obviously, he is still a class player. He came back to Athletic, his home club, and he’s still there now. Great for the club and great for the team to keep going on with their history and what they do, so yeah, he’s a great coach.

Luke Doolan will be travelling with the Kingdom when they go to Dublin at the weekend ahead of their FAI Cup Semi–Final clash with Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday at 6pm.

Free energy upgrades (Warmer Homes Scheme)

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides free home energy upgrades to homeowners who get certain social welfare payments. These upgrades help improve the energy efficiency and warmth of your home and are also known as the Warmer Homes Scheme.

The scheme prioritises the oldest and least energy efficient homes. You can apply for the free upgrades again if you’ve already had work done under the scheme, but your home would benefit from more upgrades. To access the scheme again you must still meet the qualifying criteria.

The scheme covers these home energy upgrades:

• Attic insulation

• Wall insulation - including cavity wall, internal wall and external wall insulation

• Draught-proofing

• Lagging jackets

• Energy efficient lighting

• Energy advice

New central heating systems and replacement windows are also occasionally covered by the scheme. Your windows will only be replaced if your walls are being insulated at the same time and the existing windows are single-glazed windows. The SEAI decides if replacement windows are needed on a case-by-case basis.

Since 1 January 2025, if you qualify for a new central heating system, the scheme will not cover a new fossil

fuel boiler, such as an oil or gas boiler. However, it will cover renewable heating systems such as a heat pump. Who qualifies for the scheme? You must own your home and be living in it. It must have been built and occupied before 2026. Your home must have a BER of C,D,EF and you must be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment. The fuel allowance is one of the qualifying payments. You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre to check if you are on a qualifying payment.

If you don’t have a BER for your home, the SEAI will do a free BER to check that your home meets the qualifying criteria of having a BER of C or lower.

Are there any costs associated with the scheme?

You will not be charged for work done under this scheme. However, if you sell your home within 5 years of getting the work done, you need to tell the SEAI. You should inform them in writing at least 30 days before your property is sold. The SEAI may ask you to repay some or all of the grant. This is at their discretion.

How does the scheme work?

There are 4 steps to this process:

1. Apply for the scheme online or by completing an application form and sending it back to the SEAI. You must ensure you meet the qualifying criteria above when applying. You can use the SEAI online portal

In loving memory of Patrick Murhill Muckross, Killarney who died on 5th October 2024.

On the First Anniversary of the death of Pa, Brigid, Christina, Lauren and Brendan wish to express their sincere thanks for the extraordinary support and kindness received on their loss.

We would particularly like to thank those who cared for Pa, especially Fr Kieran O’Brien, Dr. Andrew O’Regan, Park Road Medical Centre, Anthony and the team at O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy, New St. We are also very grateful to O’Keeffe Funeral Directors for their professional service.

Your hat still hangs upon the wall, A gentle reminder loved by all. Its brim once shaded work-worn eyes, That watched the fields, the earth, the skies.

We see you still on summer days, Upon the tractor, baling hay. The hum of wheels, the steady sound, Lives on in memories all around.

The horses knew your patient hand, They followed you across the land. With quiet strength and gentle care, You left your mark forever there.

Though one year’s gone, the time feels near, Your voice, your laugh, we almost hear. In fields, in roads, in skies above, We hold you close with endless love.

Pa’s Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday 5th October at 10.30am in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

Lower Sunny Hill, Killarney, Co Kerry who departed this life on 7th Oct 2024.

It is with great sorrow that we lovingly remember and greatly miss Denis, who was so tragically called from this life on October 7th, 2024. On this, his 1st anniversary, we, his brothers Kevin, Brian, Jimmy, Anthony and Declan, together with our wives, his niece and nephews, his aunt Eileen O’Grady, and his soul mate Joan Moriarty, wish to express our appreciation and thanks to all who sympathized with and supported us at the time of our painful loss.

Our sincere gratitude goes to all who attended the removal, Funeral Mass and burial, including those who travelled long distances to be with us.

Heartfelt thanks to Fr. Kieran O’Brien for his support and for celebrating Denis’ life so gently, as befitted one of life’s true gentlemen. The moving singing by Denis’ brother-in-law Mike Sexton and his grandson Samuel added a special dimension to the Funeral Mass, and for this we are very grateful.

We are forever indebted to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for their support and help, which ensured that Denis’ remains were returned to us as quickly as possible. We are grateful to all those who donated to this most worthy organization.

We thank Mike O’Shea and Michael O’Shea Jnr., Funeral Directors, for their professionalism and kindness in handling the funeral arrangements.

A special word of thanks to Denis’ friend Aidan O’Donoghue for the joy which was brought to Denis’ life over many years through their shared love of motorbike journeys, both at home and abroad.

Sincere thanks to Aidan and to Emma Phillips and all in the Motorbike Squad for their touching Guard of Honor as Denis was taken to his final resting place and for organizing a Bike Run to raise valuable funds for the Kevin Bell Trust in Denis’ memory.

Our heartfelt thanks to Jose Alberto and his wife in Spain, whose kindness and assistance were a true help to our family during a challenging time.

As we cannot thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as our expression of heartfelt gratitude to one and all. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the intentions of all.

“Oh! you, whom I have loved so much on earth, pray for me and live in such a manner that we may be re-united forever in a Blessed Eternity.”

O’NEILL In loving memory of Jeremy and Mary Joe O’Neill, late of 22 Muckross View, Killarney and 6 Plunkett Street whose anniversaries occur on 2nd October and 19th August.

Death is nothing at all I have only slipped away to the next room I am I and you are you Whatever we were to each other That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name

Speak to me in the easy way which you always used

Put no difference into your tone

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together

Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.

Let it be spoken without effect Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you. For an interval. Somewhere. Very near. Just around the corner.

All is well.

Nothing is past; nothing is lost.

One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ.

Reigning champions Dr Crokes will get the defence of their Kerry SFC title underway on Sunday with a tricky first round tie against Mid Kerry in Austin Stack Park.

There were kinder draws available for the Killarney side, who retained their Club Championship crown with a victory over Na Gaeil in mid-September.

Mid Kerry have reached three of the last five county finals (2020, 2022, 2023), losing on each occasion to East Kerry. With a team comprised mainly of Beaufort and Laune Rangers players, they made light work of St Brendan’s in the all-district preliminary round, prevail-

ing on a scoreline of 2-18 to 0-10. Their prominent players include county men Mike Breen, Seán O’Brien and Keith Evans, along with Eoin Clifford, Gearóid Hassett and Ciarán Kennedy, who kicked five points against Brendan’s. Elsewhere, bookies’ favourites East Kerry will play Templenoe in Beaufort on Saturday as they attempt to mount another challenge and reclaim the Bishop Moynihan trophy. Austin Stacks’ first match back in the County Championship having earned promotion from Intermediate in 2024 is against Milltown/ Castlemaine in Stack Park. (That match will form a double header with the

Crokes-Mid Kerry fixture on Saturday.)

On Sunday, another double header in Killarney sees last year’s beaten finalists Dingle take on Na Gaeil and Kenmare Shamrocks face newly-formed North Kerry. Meanwhile, Spa will travel to Glenbeigh to play South Kerry. The winners of these six ties will advance to the quarter-final stage where they will join Rathmore and West Kerry, who by the luck of the draw received a bye to the last eight.

Kerry fans celebrate with Ryder Cup hero Lowry

Kingdom GAA jersey spotted on global stage (again)

The famous green and gold jersey went global again on Sunday night as a group of Kerry fans from the Killarney area were seen celebrating with European Ryder Cup hero Shane Lowry at Bethpage, New York.

Offaly man Lowry holed the all-important putt to ensure that Europe would retain the trophy in the United States, and when he got his hands on the prestigious silverware he ran to a large crowd of supporters near the 18th hole.

Amongst the crowd was a proud Kingdom contingent, all kitted out in Kerry GAA jerseys. The boisterous celebrations that followed were broadcast worldwide.

The Kerry crew was comprised of four couples: Kevin O’Callaghan (Glenflesk) and his wife Nicola (née Ryan, Kilcummin), Gary Kerrisk (Killarney) and his wife Andrea (née Coffey, Beaufort), Simon Gallivan (Killarney) and his wife Maria (née Warren, Glenflesk), and Maria’s sister Katie Kelly (accompanied by her husband, Shane, who hails from Tipperary and was not in Kerry colours). Also with the crew was friend Jerh O’Sullivan, a Firies native who now resides in New York.

Kevin, Gary and Simon are members at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and colleagues at Killarney-based insurance broker GMIB.ie.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser,

Kevin said they were lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

“It was such a fluke. It looks like we planted ourselves in that spot but we just ended up in this field near 18 by chance when there was no one else around. Then we looked around and were like, ‘Jesus, that’s the Ryder Cup there!’ It was on a podium five yards away. That’s when we realised we might be in a deadly spot. Within 10 minutes there were thousands of people around us.

“It was a crazy experience and one that we’ll never forget.”

Europe withstood an American fightback to eventually prevail on a scoreline of 15-13 with Lowry’s putt on the 18th green proving pivotal.

The moment when the Irishman ran over and joined them to celebrate a well-deserved victory over America was captured both on TV and by photographers; images of Lowry and the delighted Kerry fans have been published online by The New York Times, The Times of London, the BBC and Sports Illustrated.

It is the latest in a long line of Kerry jersey sightings at major televised sporting events. The Kingdom’s geansaí has previously appeared at the Masters at Augusta, the World Darts Championships, and the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

In 2022 a Ballybunion woman wore her Kerry jersey while paying respects to the late Queen Elizabeth as she was lying in state in Westminster Hall.

Sunday’s game is not about me. It’s about the players on the pitch.
Colin HEALY, Kerry FC Manager

Kerry people are well used to the trip to Dublin for big games, so a semi-final in the capital is nothing new. However, this Sunday is different. This time it’s Kerry FC who travel to Tallaght to play Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup.

While Kerry GAA teams have been winning All-Irelands in Croker for well over a century, the latest one in July being the 39th, the fledgling Kerry FC are just three years old. They have, however, made remarkable strides in this short time.

On Monday I met up with five men closely involved in this game, which kicks off at 6.30pm and will be shown live on RTÉ.

First to two Killarney men, media officer Ivan Hurley and his assistant David Moriarty, who confirmed that by midday on Monday 924 tickets had been bought on the Kery FC website, and that four free buses were booked out to ferry supporters to the game. That figure will have topped well over the one thousand by the time you read this. Add in 500 Kerry supporters domiciled in Dublin. Kerry FC will have a core band of 1,500 supporters, the figure for the full house in Mounthawk in that memorable 4-3 AET quarter-final win over Sligo Rovers just a few weeks ago.

Tallaght Stadium's current seating capacity is for 10,500 spectators, following the completion of the new North Stand in September 2024. Kerry can expect a fairly raucous band of Hoops’ supporters who will no doubt look on their Munster opponents as easy picking for a place in the final.

CAPTAIN

Seánie McGrath and Ronan Teahan are two key midfielders for Kerry FC. Team captain McGrath, who is 22 years old, has made over 100 appearances for the club, netting 10 times. He is small in stature but lion-hearted, and he is the team’s top scorer so far this season. I reminded him of some of those goals he scored but, modest as ever, he admitted: “If Ryan Kelliher had been playing all season he would be the top scorer.”

Killarney man Kelliher is out for the season after undergoing surgery for an ACL injury. He will be missed on Sunday, McGrath continued.

“He’s a class player that you need to take on Shamrock Rovers. It will be a whole new experience for us. I’ve watched Shamrock Rovers playing in Europe and they’re a class side. It is daunting, maybe, but it’s exciting.

“We will prepare as normal this week under Colin (Healy) and will give it everything on Sunday. We know the reputation of Shamrock Rovers and the support they will have but there’s a great buzz around town (Tralee). We have built up a great core of local supporters who give us a big lift in our games.

“This is only the third season for Kerry FC. We’ve been unbeaten in nine out of our last eleven games and that consistency is a great sign.”

MOUNT EVEREST

Kerry reached the summit of Carrauntoohil in that brilliant comeback win over Sligo Rovers. On Sunday they will face Mount Everest.

“As I said, Shamrock Rovers are a class side, but we have prepared well and will have to adapt our game plan if needs be during the game on Sunday,” McGrath offered. “Colin has massive experience, and he’s used to upping the levels we need to be at. We are good enough, but we cannot afford to go 0-3 down as happened in the Sligo game.

“We respect the quality of the Shamrock Rovers, but we’ve shown what we can do against top sides.”

SPORTING STOCK

Fellow midfielder Ronan Teahan is in his third year with Kerry FC. He comes from great sporting stock. The 21-year-old with that lethal ciotóg is the son of John Teahan, who is well known in Tralee, Killarney and elsewhere as an outstanding basketball player. In January 2015, John was ranked in the top 25 of Ireland's greatest ever male basketball players alongside Kieran Donaghy and Micheál Quirke. His mother Marie Fitzgerald was twice a football All-Star in the 1990s, while his father John and sister Muireann have donned the green of Ireland on the basketball court. It all began in Cahersiveen. Ronan also has a famous uncle. “He was handy enough,” the youngster told reporters. No boasting there, underplaying one of the all-time Kerry GAA greats: Maurice Fitzgerald.

John will have a dilemma on Sunday. While Ronan plays in Dublin, his brother will be in Glenbeigh as physio with South Kerry versus Spa. “We’ll see which brother he rates best,” Ronan quipped.

So how did he choose soccer over basketball as his preferred sport? “I did play some football and basketball going to school, but I started to play (soccer) with Iveragh Utd, progressed to Kerry Schoolboys and stayed with soccer.” He joined the Kerry FC Academy at U15 level before graduating first to the U17s and then the U19s.

He has been a certain starter in every game over the past three years His consistency speaks for itself. Like McGrath, he has made over 100 appearance for the Kingdom at senior level. He only missed one game in 2023 when he was sitting his Leaving Cert in Coláiste na Sceilge.

So soft spoken but focused. Healy played with several big clubs including Celtic (for five years), Coventry, Sunderland, Livingston, Cork City, Ipswich Town and more. His playing days were curtailed due to bad injuries, including broken legs. One of these incidents occurred when he was playing with Sunderland and was tackled by the then Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

Incidentally, during the Saipan furore involving McCarthy and Roy Keane, McCarthy called on Healy as a replacement if Keane was to be dropped after his

Kerry dreaming of cup miracle

LOI giants Shamrock Rovers stand between Kingdom and cup final

outburst. The call-up was delayed so he was unable to join the Ireland team in the World Cup.

In early 2024 he was assistant to Eileen Gleeson, manager of the Irish women’s national team. It was short lived. The FAI did not renew his contract later that year in circumstances described as controversial. He came to Kerry FC on May 5, 2025.

“Shamrock Rovers are a top side so we will just focus on Sunday,” Healy said on Monday. “We will keep to the same schedule as we do for every game. I will watch Rovers in Prague on Thursday (last night). It is up to the players themselves if they want to watch it: only some will.

“Sunday’s game is not about me. It’s about the players on the pitch. I work out the game plan and they play to that. I concentrate on building resilience in the players. We don’t want any excuses after the game on Sunday. We will build on our strengths and try to capitalise on any weaknesses they might have. I say to the players that they have a game plan, stick with it and enjoy the experience of playing a top-class team.

“I will assess the situation as the game develops and make changes when I see the need. In the game against Sligo, I made necessary changes when we went 0-2 down early on. Half-time gave me the opportunity to make it very clear that we had given Sligo far too much respect. Go at them instead of reacting to their moves.

“We have most of our squad fully fit and available for selection.”

Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley is someone Healy knows “very well”.

“He’s a great manager with an incredi-

ble record. Look what Shamrock Rovers have achieved under Stephen. I did some coaching courses with him.”

MEMORIES

I have many happy memories of going to Glenmalure Park, Milltown in the late 60s/early 70s, particularly those great derby matches between The Hoops and the Gypsies (Bohs) with the intense North v South Dublin rivalry, still as great as ever.

Off the top of my head, I remember Irish internationals Bobby Gilbert, a powerful header of the ball, Paddy Mulligan, Johnny Fulham, Ray Treacy, Eamonn Dunphy, Johnny Giles, Liam Tuohy, Paddy Ambrose, Ronnie Nolan et al.

But that all changed when Glenmalure Park was sold in 1987 by the club's directors, the Kilcoyne family, after they purchased it from the Jesuits. This sale led to protests, with a supporter-led group KRAM (Keep Rovers at Milltown) forming to try and buy back the stadium, and eventually the demolition of the stadium in 1990 to make way for housing. The last match played at the stadium was an FAI Cup semi-final on April 12, 1987, which saw a pitch invasion by fans protesting the sale to a building speculator. As Ronnie Drew sang: 'Cause Dublin keeps on changing and nothing seems the same… I remember Dublin City in the rare auld times.

Best of luck to the ever-improving Kerry FC. Savour this new experience and give it your best shot. I know David slew Goliath in the Biblical story, but a miracle might not even suffice this time. The Hoops are strong favourites to go on and win their 26th FAI Cup.

We respect the quality of the Shamrock Rovers, but we’ve shown what we can do against top sides.

The top leagues in Irish basketball return to action this weekend as both the St Paul’s men’s and women’s teams hope to start their respective seasons with a win.

The men, now operating under the name ‘Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers’, are at home to the Titans of Galway on Saturday with tip-off at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre at 7.30pm. It will be head coach Luke O’Hea's first National League Division 1 game in charge of St Paul's following a busy summer of preparation and recruitment. American point guard Steve Kelly comes to Killarney off the back of a stellar final season at Edinboro College. He finished the season with 385 points with game average of 13.7, while also contributing four assists per game. He is a native of Whitman, Massachusetts.

It’s go time for Paul’s as new season begins

Standing at 6’9”, Samuel Grant will bring considerable height to the St Paul’s line-up. He comes with a strong reputation having represented England at U15 level and Great Britain at U16, U18 and U20 level. While you would think his size would make him primarily an inside player, he actually has an im-

St Paul’s Golf Classic

held in Connie’s memory

After an indifferent spell of weather, the sun shone and a gentle breeze greeted the thirty-five teams that took part in the St Paul’s Golf Classic, held in Beaufort in memory of the legendary Connie Brosnan.

The first ball was struck at 9am with the last putt being sunk shortly after 7pm and with benign conditions the scoring was impressive.

The course was in pristine condition and fittingly, given the amount of work he puts into organising the event, it was Connie's son Seán who took the hon-

ours. He was part of the MC Construction team led by Keith McMahon with Councillor Niall Botty O'Callaghan and Aidan O’Connor all dovetailing wonderfully to hit an impressive 94 points.

RESULTS: 1st - MC Construction 94 points (Keith McMahon, Seán Brosnan, Niall O’Callaghan, Aidan O’Connor). 2nd - Bunkers Bar 93 points (Enda, Ronan, Aileen, Darren Curtayne). 3rd Tatler Jack Bar 90 pts (Pat O’Shea, Der Brosnan, John O’Leary, Eric Whelan). 4th Victoria Hotel 89 pts (Declan Kelly, John Guest, James McCarthy, David O’Sullivan). Nearest the Pin - Seán Brosnan. Longest Drive - Robert Gallague.

pressive outside shot, something which helps him to regularly contribute 20plus points in games.

The has also welcomed Spaniard Pablo Murcia on board. Pablo will combine a playing role in the National League team with a coaching coordinator role in the juvenile section of the club.

Local lad Eoin Carroll has been appointed as captain with Mark Sheehan and Rui Saraiva sharing vice captain duties. Meanwhile, the women’s team have an away opener in the Super League as they head to Mercy College to play the SETU Waterford Wildcats. James Fleming’s side beat the Wildcats en route to last season’s final so the Killarney outfit will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday at 7pm.

The St Paul’s head coach has been active during the off-season, securing the signings of Maisie Burnham, Tara Cousins and Lovisa Hevinder.

Maisie comes to Killarney following an honour laden time in the Liberty High School in Washington State where she also excelled at volleyball. She averaged 16.3 points per game in final college season with the University of Portland. Cousins had an impressive college career with the University of Delaware, while six-footer Hevinder is set to become the first female Swedish player to line out in the black and white of St Paul’s.

Irish international Lorraine Scanlon will captain the team, taking over from Rheanne Kelly (née O’Shea) who will be sitting out this season as she and husband Brian are expecting their first child.

In a new initiative, St Paul’s have launched a brand new season ticket which will allow access to all games, both men’s and women’s, at Super League, National League, Development League and U20 level. These will be on sale through the club’s Facebook page and on match days.

KDL YOUTHS LEAGUE: Killarney Athletic 3-1 Tralee Dynamos. Leo Allen x 2, Ben Kelliher x1. Killarney Athletic U18s kicked off their season in impressive fashion with a well-earned 3-1 victory over Tralee Dynamos on Saturday afternoon. A dominant first-half display, led by a clinical brace from Leo Allen, set the tone for the hosts before Ben Kelliher sealed the win in the second half. The game started at a high tempo, with both sides eager to assert control early on. It was Athletic who found the breakthrough midway through the first half. Leo Allen pounced quickest, showing great composure to slot past the keeper for the opener. Minutes later, Leo doubled his tally with a smart finish after a well-worked team move, giving Killarney a commanding 2-0 lead going into the break. Athletics’ response after the half time break was measured and mature. The midfield—featuring the dynamic combination of Evan Doona, Luca Mosca, Liam O’Brien, Jake Nash, and Ben Kelliher—regained control and dictated the pace of the game. Kelliher, who had been a constant threat throughout, capped off a fine performance with a goal of his own, creating a three-goal cushion and effectively putting the result beyond doubt. Defensively, Athletic were solid and organised, with Finan Blackwell, Mark O’Carroll, Bryan O’Connor, and Kalen Browne putting in a shift to nullify the Dynamos' attacking threats. Goalkeeper Fionn O’Donoghue Sheehan and defence worked in harmony to close out the game with composure. The depth of the squad was clear in the second half as Dylan O’Meara, Jack O’Grady, Darragh O’Sullivan, Brian McCarthy, and Liam Harmon were introduced and made valuable contributions, keeping the tempo high and ensuring Athletic saw out the game professionally. A deserved three points and a strong start to the league campaign for Killarney Athletic. Credit to Tralee Dynamos for a competitive and spirited match.

GIRLS U13 DIVISION 1: MEK B 4-0 Killarney Athletic B. Killarney Athletic U13s Bs faced MEK Bs in a spirited match that ended with a 4-0 victory for MEK. Despite the scoreline, the Killarney girls delivered a fantastic performance, showing determination and skill throughout the game. While the result didn't go their way, there were plenty of outstanding individual efforts and moments of great teamwork. A big thanks goes to MEK, and everyone involved for their warm hospitality and for hosting a memorable evening of soccer.

U14 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Celtic B 2

Killarney Athletic 1. Goal: Cillian Sheahan. The lads were unlucky not to come away with something from their game away at Celtic on Saturday morning. It was tight game throughout. The lads kept going to the final whistle and were very unlucky to have a goal ruled out near the end of the game. An excellent goal from Cillian Sheahan to mark his return from injury.

U15 GIRLS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1-7 Tralee Dynamos. Elody Walsh x 1. Tough game for Athletic today from a strong Dynamos team. The game started with Tralee pushing hard but Athletic did well at the back to hold them out. Unfortunately Athletic lost Roisin O’Sullivan to injury and a few minutes later Tralee got the first goal. Athletic tried hard but Dynamos grabbed another on the 15-minute mark. An already difficult task was made harder when another Athletic player went off with injury. With no other substitutes Athletic had to play the rest of the game with 10 players.

Spa GAA

SENIOR MEN: Spa have drawn South Kerry in the Garveys SuperValu County Championship Round 1. This game will be played in Glenbeigh on Sunday 5th October at 2pm.

LADIES: Spa Senior ladies travelled to Firies today to take on Cromane in the

Bon Secours Junior A Championship Semi-Final. It was perfect weather conditions for a great game of football with the sun shining and no wind to speak of. Cromane got the start that Spa, being the underdogs, very much needed. A high ball in by Róisín Griffin saw a very uncharacteristic fumble by Spa which saw the ball in the back of the net putting Cromane on the score sheet. This was followed up by a point by Cromane’s Cora Joy. A much needed first score to settle Spa came from a free taken by Saoirse Kelly but Spa had a difficult job closing down Cromane’s attacks with Cora Joy and Eimear Burke, who scored 2-04 in the first half was playing incredibly strong fast football. Spa will rue a few wides, 7 in total, but Cromane had their homework done on Spa, swarming around Saoirse Kelly whenever she had the ball. Half time score was 3-05 to 0-04 to Cromane. Spa started the second half better with Ciara O’Sullivan blasting the ball past Edel Murphy into the Cromane goal, but Eimear Burke was able to slot two points over the bar to keep a comfortable lead for Cromane. Spa played much better in the second half. Edel Slattery and Sinéad White made a difference when they came on but the damage of three goals in the first half was too much of a gap to close. Liadh Tobin had a great game and Maireád Bennett played outstanding football in midfield, but Cromane were the better team on the day finishing with a score of 3-08 to 1-06. Cromane now advance into the Junior A final in two weeks’ time.

ABC: As we drew a close to the end of the season, last Saturday we celebrated Coach Appreciation Day in Spa GAA. Our underage section is the heartbeat of the club – where boys and girls learn skills, make friends, and grow a love of the game. None of this happens without our amazing coaches. They give up evenings, weekends, and endless energy to guide and support every child who pulls on the Spa jersey. For that, we say a massive THANK YOU! Spa is proud to be a welcoming, inclusive club – and there’s always room for more people to get involved. Together, we keep Spa strong today and for generations to come.
