Today, the seven elected members of the Killarney Municipal District will vote on the future of Áras Phádraig.
| By Sean Moriarty
The decision they make will shape the centre of our town for decades to come.
But as they prepare to cast their votes, we must ask "but at what cost?"
On the table is a plan that includes the development of a large medical centre on the site.
Councillors may claim their hands are tied. They may say it’s the only way to fund the long-awaited redevelopment. But since when does the HSE have the final say over a town-owned site?
After all, we’ve been repeatedly told that sites like St Finan’s cannot be transferred to agencies like the Land Development Agency. Why is this any different?
There is already a suitable option for a modern Primary Care Centre – the soonto-be-vacated District hospital on St Margaret’s just outside town. That is where it belongs. Not in the middle of a congested area like Lewis Road.
Let’s be clear: a six-storey development in the centre of Killarney would be a dis-
aster for traffic.
The town is already gridlocked on busy days. Adding a major new medical facility to an already strained area will only make things worse. And what about the residents of the Lewis Road cottages?
The impact on their homes and daily lives hasn’t been seriously considered.
Killarney has a long history of letting state-owned buildings rot while plans go nowhere. Just look at St Finan’s or Pretty Polly.
Yes, the Aras has to be redeveloped, and it is long overdue, but its purpose is better served as a cultural centre (at the same height as the current building) and not as a medical centre.
It’s time for our councillors to stop rubber-stamping bad decisions and start fighting for sensible planning.
Killarney deserves better. Today’s vote should be about more than ticking boxes, it should be about protecting the future of the town.

A South Kerry councillor is calling on Kerry County Council to examine the potential for a new Blueway that would link Lough Lein in Killarney with Ballykissane Pier outside Killorglin.
Cllr Tommy Cahill has tabled a motion for this Friday’s meeting of the Kenmare Municipal District, asking council officials to explore the feasibility of developing a Blueway project starting from the shores of Lough Lein, following the River Laune through Killorglin town, and finishing at Ballykissane.
Blueways are designated trails on or alongside Ireland’s rivers, lakes, and canals, designed for water-based activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing, as well as land-based activities like walking and cycling. They are developed by local authorities
in partnership with bodies such as Fáilte Ireland and Waterways Ireland, and require a full planning and consultation process to ensure access, safety, and environmental protection.
Some of Ireland’s most popular Blueways include the Shannon Blueway, which offers paddling routes along Ireland’s largest river, and the Boyne Blueway in Meath, which passes near Trim Castle.
Cllr Cahill believes the River Laune route would be ideal for a similar project and has asked the council to begin looking into its viability.
The preferred route corridor for the proposed new road between Farranfore and Killarney is being confirmed today (Friday), as part of Phase 3 of the N22 Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor project.
Letters are being delivered today to landowners whose property falls within the selected corridor. These letters, issued by Kerry County Council, outline upcoming surveys and planned engagement with landowners over the coming months. At a recent council meeting, elected members approved the opening of tenders for ground investigation and survey work.
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Martin Grady, welcomed progress on the long-running project.
“The Killarney to Farranfore road carries more than 20,000 vehicles every day,” he said. “There have been over 300 reported accidents and 18 deaths on this stretch in the last 20 years. That’s enough to justify any level of investment.”
While he welcomed the latest developments, Cllr Grady also expressed disappointment that the project was not included in the Government’s €200 billion National Development Plan.
“I hope Kerry will get its fair share of funding,” he added.
Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland are jointly leading the project. Jacobs Engineering is handling the technical design work.

Three local acts will take to the stage at ANAM Killarney on Friday night for the semi-finals of the 2024 Battle of the Bands competition.
The event, which begins at 7pm, is free to attend and will be held at the open-air venue. The three semi-finalists include a Killarney-based rock group and two traditional Irish music acts. All three earned their place in the semi-finals through earlier qualifying rounds.
The competition, supported by Kerry County Council’s Arts Office, aims to highlight emerging musical talent in the Killarney area.
The winners of Friday’s semi-final will go through to the final, where the overall prize includes a songwriting mentoring session with Cathal Flaherty, a wellknown Kerry recording artist.
Kerry County Council Arts Officer Kate Kennelly said: “It’s a great opportunity for musicians of different backgrounds to showcase their work” .

St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School in Killarney is calling on former students to help build a record of where life has taken them since they left the school.
Staff at the school are asking past pupils to fill out a short form to help track career paths and establish a stronger alumni network. The aim is to stay connected and involve past pupils in school life where possible, including opportunities to speak to current students or attend events.
The form is available on the school’s new website under the “Students” section, listed as “Alumni,” or directly at www.
stbrigidskillarney.ie/alumni.
Teacher Sheree Murphy said the school is proud of its past pupils and hopes they will stay in touch.
“At St Brigid’s, we are proud of our past pupils. We would love to stay connected with past pupils and keep them involved in school life where possible,” she said.
“Whether it’s sharing their career journey, offering advice to current students or even returning as a guest speaker, their experience is invaluable to us.”
The information collected will help the school organise reunions, keep past students informed about events, and provide chances to reconnect.
In a covert overnight operation worthy of a Cold War spy thriller, a team of Donegal operatives infiltrated Killarney in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leaving behind enemy colours in some of the most sacred strongholds of Kerry GAA.
The trio - Lee Gooch, Denis Ferry, and Leslie O’Donnell - launched ‘Operation Green and Gold’ under the cover of darkness, targeting 18 counties on their mission to plant Donegal flags ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland Final clash between Donegal and Kerry.
Their Killarney objective: high-visibility flag drops at key landmarks. Mission accomplished. The tricolour of Tir Chonaill now flutters defiantly on High Street and — in what can only be described as an act of GAA espionage — at the gates of
Dr Crokes’ clubhouse, deep inside Kerry territory.
The operation began in the early hours, with the team reportedly “cruising through Limerick, Tipp, Laois, Kildare and Dublin — all before breakfast.”
Locals awoke to the unmistakable Donegal colours where green and gold usually means something very different. The spies remain at large. Kerry supporters are said to be regrouping and countermeasures are expected.
The second free concert in Spraoi Chiarraí’s 20th Anniversary Summer Series takes place this Saturday at 8pm in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, Killarney.

the group’s director and seasoned folk performer Tim O’Shea.
“This is about giving young performers a chance to experience a real concert setting and celebrate our culture,” said O’Shea.
The concert is open to all and is free to attend. It is supported by Kerry County Council, Killarney MD, Killarney Chamber, and local sponsors.

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill says US trade tariffs played a part in the collapse of the Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company, which confirmed this week that it will cease operations after the failure of the examinership process.
The closure will result in the loss of around 50 jobs and casts doubt over the future of locally purchased whiskey casks. Cahill described the outcome as “a great shock” and said the closure would have “a devastating” effect on some in the local economy.
He also claimed the imposition of tariffs on Irish whiskey by US President Donald Trump added further difficulty for the company’s export plans. “Nobody could have foreseen the tariffs, which make for nervous investors,” he said. The company had been in examinership since April. A planned merger with a US-based investor fell through earlier
this year, and no new investment was secured during the court-mandated restructuring window.
In a statement, the company blamed a combination of COVID-related setbacks, delays in opening its Fossa distillery, rising costs, and global economic uncertainty. “Despite the best efforts of all involved, the process did not result in a successful investment outcome,” it said.
Michael Cahill said he is willing to facilitate meetings with stakeholders to explore rescue options. “We need to work fast and smart here if we are to pull this back from the brink,” he said.

Meanwhile, Heartbeat’s most recent meeting drew a strong crowd, with Dr Helena delivering a detailed talk on stroke treatment and prevention. She explained the different types of strokes, how each is treated, and answered a wide range of questions from the floor. Dr Helena also stayed back to speak with attendees individually.

The MTU campus in Cork was a hive of activity last week as the 2025 Munster Fleadh Cheoil took place from July 12 to 19.
Among the standout performers were the dancers and musicians of Kilcummin Comhaltas, who delivered a superb showing across all categories.
In the dancing competitions, Kilcummin had strong representation across every age group. The Under-12 Ladies Set Team Ella claimed the top spot and were crowned Munster Champions, earning their place at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford this August. A second Under-12 Ladies team, Team Chloe, danced beautifully but were unlucky not to be placed.
The Under-12 Mixed Set Team Colm secured second place, also qualifying for the All-Ireland Fleadh. Team Donnacha also put in a proud performance in a highly competitive field.
In the Under-15 Mixed Set, Kilcummin placed 3rd, reflecting the high standard of competition. The club’s Under-18 Ladies Set and Over-18 Mixed Half Set Team Conor both took home 1st place titles and will also travel to Wexford. The Over-35 Mixed Set danced superbly to
take 2nd place, while the Over-18 Ladies Set were crowned Munster Champions. The Over-18 Mixed Full Set placed 2nd, completing a phenomenal weekend for Kilcummin's dancers.
Music and singing competitions kicked off on Friday, and once again Kilcummin made their mark. Eoin Foley placed 2nd in the 12-15 Melodeon and went on to win the Button Accordion, while Michael Healy was crowned Munster Champion in the 15-18 Melodeon.
Colm Fleming was also in fine form, winning the U12 Melodeon, placing 2nd in the U12 Accordion, and helping his U12 Trio (with Aoibhinn O'Connor and Leagh Brosnan) place 3rd.
Brynn McCarthy placed 2nd in Irish Singing and 3rd in English Singing, while Sean Butler was 2nd in the 15-18 Mouth Organ competition. With a long list of qualifiers heading to Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford from August 3rd–10th, Kilcummin Comhaltas can be rightly proud.
Café du Parc hosted a special event last week to coincide with the July Races.
In partnership with Veuve Clicquot, the venue set up a pop-up bar and held an after-party at its town centre location. The temporary outdoor bar served champagne and cocktails, including the
Espresso Royale and Golden Saddle. The event was timed to follow Ladies Day at the races. Judges Glenda Gilson and Rob Naughton were among the guests who called in during the evening. Later, the party continued inside with music from saxophonist Abraham Ferreira and percussionist Darragh O’Rourke, followed by DJ Steven Howard.

Ryanair staff are being paid a bonus of €1.50 for every oversized cabin bag that is identified on their flights.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary made the revelation on Morning Ireland during the week. O’Leary said the airline is
considering increasing this incentive as staff continue to struggle with the volume of excess baggage being brought onto flights. He defended the strict enforcement of baggage rules. He said: “If the bag doesn’t fit in the sizer, it’s not getting on.” He explained that baggage limits are the reason they are “so aggressive” as full Ryanair flights have a certain luggage capacity. Half of the passengers can bring two bags while the other half can only bring one. The CEO said they are happy to incentivise
their staff as he believes the problem will decline over the coming year or two. Fees apply to passengers who bring oversize baggage, which typically costs around €75. Ryanair fares always include one small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or a laptop. It must fit under the seat in front of the passenger. Additional baggage options like a 10kg bag or a 20kg bag can be purchased while buying a plane ticket online, or it can be added as an add-on option afterwards.
Six local festivals in Kerry are set to benefit from a total of €29,800.
The funding was announced as part of the Small-Scale Local Festivals and Summer Schools Scheme which is designed to assist local cultural events. Funding was allocated following a competitive applications process, with a maximum grant of €5,000 available. The local Kerry festivals receiving funding include: The Irish Spirit Summer School in Ballybunion (€4,800), the Cur le Chéile festival in Caherdaniel & Castlecove (€5,000), the Lixnaw Comhaltas festival (€5,000), Sneem Summer Festival (€5,000), the Listowel International Storytelling Festival (€5,000), and the Cornelius Lyons Summer School (€5,000). Kerry Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Children Norma Foley welcomed the news. She said: “These festivals and events bring communities together and allow people to showcase their talents and their creativity. Kerry is a mecca for these wonderful festivals and community gatherings.”
National housing charity Threshold has helped prevent more than 950 (951) Irish households from becoming homeless, according to new figures provided in their latest Impact Report.
The report reveals that tenancy termination remains the leading issue for renters, accounting for 35% of all queries received by the organisation. In total, Threshold provided advice and support to over 8,500 households during this period, assisting more than 11,400
adults and over 7,000 children. Of those supported, 1,595 households were identified as being at risk of homelessness. Threshold successfully helped 951 of them to remain in their current homes or secure alternative accommodation.
Ann-Marie O’Reilly, the National Advocacy Manager for Threshold, acknowledged the ongoing strains faced by renters but welcomed the growing number of people reaching out for help. She said: “Our Q2 Impact Report highlights the need for continued work and advocacy to support private renters across
Ireland, even with the updated Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) legislation, which extends the RPZ rent controls across the nation.” All counties nationwide are now classified as a Rent Pressure Zone. The extension of RPZs nationwide means that all tenancies benefit from the cap on rent increases. Rent cannot be raised by more than 2% each year. Threshold’s service is available Monday to Friday from 9am-9pm at 1800 454 454, or online at www.threshold.ie/get-help to any private renter in need of advice and support.

There was some unexpected drama off-camera in Carrigstown this week when a woman mistook the Fair City set for a real shopping location.
RTÉ’s economic and public affairs editor David Murphy shared the amusing encounter on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, revealing he met a woman outside of the fictional set on Monday while she was trying to do her food shopping. He said: “Met a lady outside RTÉ trying to do her shopping in the Lidl on Fair City set this evening. It’s listed on Google Maps. I gave her directions to Tesco.” The fictional Lidl shop is part of a three-year product placement deal
between the popular discount store and RTÉ, which was signed earlier this year. The new Lidl replaces the Spar shop that has featured on the Dublin soap for years. The fictional store has since been removed off Google Maps to avoid any further confusion for shoppers.
The Ballymacelligott Vintage Club will host its 15th Annual Classic Car and Honda 50 Run on Sunday, August 3, with the event based at O'Riada’s Bar, Ballymacelligott.
Festivities will begin from 9am with a Cars and Coffee meet-up before the run sets off at 11.15am. This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Lucy Breen, one of the original founders of the run alongside George Glover and John Breen. Lucy was a well-known figure in vintage car circles across Kerry and Cork, often seen behind the wheel of her distinctive yellow 1973 Rover 2000.
As in previous years, the event will support local causes. This year’s chosen beneficiaries are Tralee Community Hospital – in recognition of the care Lucy received – and Scoil Nuachabháil, the nearby national school.
Organisers have thanked sponsors Browne’s Agri, BG Motors Killarney, and O’Riada’s Bar for their continued support. Raffles and spot prizes will take place throughout the day.
Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great day out in memory of Lucy and in support of two worthy local causes.
McElligott’s Kia has announced a new sustainability partnership with the Rose of Tralee International Festival. As part of this year’s agreement, the Tralee-based dealership will provide a fully electric vehicle fleet to support the event.
This marks the eighth year of McElligott’s
involvement with the festival, but it’s the first time a full EV fleet will lead the iconic Rose Parade. A total of nine electric vehicles will be used during Féile Thrá Lí, taking place on Friday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17. Each car is fitted with towing systems and will replace traditional float-towing vehicles.
In a move to further reduce emissions,
the cars will also power festival events using Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, which turns the EV battery into a power source. One example will be a yoga retreat at Tralee Wetlands powered entirely by the Kia fleet, eliminating the need for generators.
Declan O’Hara, Dealer Principal at McElligott’s Tralee said:
“We are delighted to be sponsoring the Rose of Tralee International Festival again this year. We are seeing more and more drivers in Kerry moving to EVs so the timing was perfect for us to move to a fully electric rose partnership. Not only are these vehicles perfect for towing floats with towing capacities of up to 2.5ton, but they also allow us to power other events taking place in Tralee over across the festival dates using Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology.
The full Kia EV range, including the new EV3, EV6 and EV9, will be on display throughout the festival.

On your first anniversary Donal, Missed more than words can say.
When God was making husbands as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me, He made a perfect gentleman, compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find,
He gave my darling husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold.
He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with till tears fell down my face.
Next time we meet will be at heavens door, When I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore.
I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place.
Loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure,
Your loving wife Eileen XxX

Tyrone was fuel to the flame. Now they arrive at the 2025 final with the ultimate prize very much up for grabs. Donegal stand in their way. Can Kerry finish the job and complete a remarkable Ulster clean sweep?
The road back to All-Ireland final day has been an arduous one for this Kerry team. After being denied by Dublin in the 2023 decider, last season ended in bitter disappointment with the semi-final defeat to Armagh after extra time.
Plenty of doubts lingered coming into this season, and they were magnified in the wake of the brutal loss to Meath, but it must be said that the group has shown great character and maturity since that trying day in Tullamore.
Victory over Armagh against the odds reignited the county’s burning desire to reclaim Sam, and a follow-up win against
There is good news from Kerry’s perspective on the injury front as Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor both participated fully in training in Killarney on Saturday. Geaney, who sustained bruising on the bone in the shoulder area against Cork on May 31, was an unused substitute in the quarters and the semis. Many supporters feared that O’Connor’s season was over when he re-injured his shoulder just seconds into the preliminary quarter-final against Cavan, so his inclusion at this juncture would come as a significant and unex-
pected boost.
Speaking at a press event at the Gleneagle Hotel last Saturday, Jack O’Connor said he was hopeful that Tom O’Sullivan (calf) would return to training this week. The Kerry team was due to be announced on Thursday night after this publication went to print.
Though the teams have met many times in the intervening years, including in a league match this past spring which Donegal won, this match-up is bound to conjure up memories of the 2014 final when Kerry beat the men from Tír Chonaill in a tense, defensively minded affair.
Jim McGuinness was the manager of Donegal then as he is now. Three of McGuinness’ current squad members played in ‘14, namely Ryan McHugh, Michael Murphy and Paddy
McBrearty. For Kerry, Paul Murphy, who was Man of the Match eleven years ago, and Paul Geaney, who scored Kerry’s first goal on the day, are the only survivors.
A battle of contrasting styles is anticipated. Kerry like to kick the ball through the lines where possible, while Donegal prefer a lower risk running game. Defensively, Donegal tend to drop players deep in a zonal structure, which can force opponents to shoot from distance rather than work goal-scoring opportunities.
Key Kerry forward David Clifford is likely to be picked up by Donegal man-marker Brendan McCole. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen tactically or in terms of match-ups once the ball is thrown in.
This final will be hard won but if Kerry do manage to secure title number 39, it will surely go down as one of the county’s sweetest.
I can never figure out if the confidence I feel the week of an All-Ireland final is justified or just some innate chemical reaction that is triggered in my Kerry brain by the sight of Sam Maguire.
There are certainly reasons to feel positive if you’re a Kerry fan. The chastening Meath defeat in June did not come in a knockout game, but psychologically speaking it could have been a knockout blow for this group of players. We saw a knee-jerk reaction, at home and abroad, to dismiss their credentials as All-Ireland contenders. How could a team who lost by nine points to Meath be considered capable of going all the way? What happened next was heartening in the extreme. They beat Cavan while putting in an improved – if imperfect – performance in Killarney. Then they blitzed the champions and All-Ireland favourites Armagh in Croke Park. And they backed that up with a smart and assured display against Tyrone in the semis. That kind of turnaround takes mental toughness, maturity and professionalism – three key traits that all winning teams need in abundance.
The fact that several players are coming to the boil is also a plus point. Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Gavin White, Seánie O’Shea and Graham O’Sullivan had all been doing fine but they have really come into their own in the past month. Add to the mix the solid form of newly formed midfield pairing Seán O’Brien and Mark O’Shea, and the continued excellence of Shane Ryan, Paul Murphy, Jason Foley, Paudie Clifford, Joe O’Connor and, of course, top scorer David Clifford, and the signs are promising.
Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor potentially being available for selection also bodes well.
Having said all that, the opposition have

lots going for them too. Inspired by talismanic coach Jim McGuinness, Donegal have carved out a well-earned reputation as a formidable, tough-to-play-against side. Defensively they are well drilled, adopting a deep-lying zonal defence that can be extremely difficult to break down. Offensively they take very few risks but they are still dangerous. They generally
turn down opportunities to kick inside, instead preferring to run it and transfer the ball through the hands. They have speed across all lines of the field and they are dangerous on the counter, but even against set defences they can be a real handful. They patiently move the ball back and forth around the arc, running at sharp angles off the shoulder, biding their

time until they work an opening. When they do, they have an array of scorers who can put the ball over the bar. The comeback king Michael Murphy is especially influential in this regard.
All told, what Donegal do is rarely spectacular but it is highly effective. Their style of play might not lend itself to a brilliant final in the classic sense of the word, but it will be fascinating to see how Jack and Jim fare against one another in the tactical battle.
In the new game the following declaration is so obviously true it’s almost redundant to even say it – it’s a bit like saying it’s important to breathe – but winning your fair share of kickouts will be crucial. Kerry’s one capitulation this year came in Tullamore when they suffered a brutal period in which they simply could not get their hands on ball. It’s very difficult to stem the tide when that happens, as we saw from the reverse perspective against Armagh.
So despite all the talk about structures and tactics and Clifford and Murphy, it might be as simple as this: will Kerry break even around the middle third? If they do – and I believe they will – they’ll get enough ball, they’ll feed their forwards, they’ll get their scores, and they’ll win.
VERDICT: Kerry by three.

Where else in the world would you like to be on the special day for Kerry but in Croke Park on All-Ireland football final Sunday?
I know it is only July, instead of my preference of a final in September, but that's the reality in this era of the split season. The eclipse of favourites Cork in the second half of last Sunday’s hurling final by underdogs Tipperary should temper any feelings of over confidence by Kerry. Donegal come with very strong credentials. They are also hello bent on revenging that 2014 loss to Kerry, the last time they met in search of Sam. It is so hard to call but call it I must.
Having seen Kerry deliver so convincingly in Croke Park, demolishing holders Armagh and following up with that win over Tyrone, I am confident that they are peaking at the right time. Despite all the injuries, especially at midfield, Kerry have adapted accordingly, as happened versus Tyrone who asserted early dominance, sweeping up possession from the consequent breaking ball. But Mark O’Shea and Seán O’Brien came good and the half back line in particular won the spilled ball. Donegal’s forte is launching all-out attacks with the wing backs ramping up the speedometer with intricate inter-passing leading to scores. Kerry players, wherever or whenever possible, must impose their game of fast football, using the foot to deliver the ball quickly to the forwards. They must take the initiative to upset Donegal’s game plan: play positively rather than react.
Kerry have the scoring power up front. David Clifford is the key scorer, but he will have at least two men on him throughout. He will still score or be fouled, and his teammates must deliver the rest. Paudie was about 80% fit against Tyrone. He held the centre well but did not go on those searing runs. Expect Sean O’Shea to deliver on the frees and kick a few two-pointers.
The Kerry defence will have to keep a tight rein on the rejuvenated Michael Murphy, a prolific scorer who is just one month short of 36 years old. He is very good, but age will be an important factor if the pace of the game is as fast as we expect. Forget about what number he has on his geansaí, he will roam and will really lift the team if he scores a few two-pointers. Man marking and matchups or zonal defence, whatever works, Kerry are adept at adapting.
If on match day some players are not at their best, I hope Kerry management takes early corrective action, maybe moving the 90% player on Sunday to another role and then if that does not work, send in the subs who will be raring to go.
Yes, Kerry for me. Gavin White to lift the Sam Maguire and then the talk will be about All-Stars. With top displays in the final, and winning, Kerry will have six. Lose it and we will have to settle for 3 or 4.
A message to those unable to get to Croker, put out the Infant of Prague statue. It works its magic to keep the rain away for wedding days and piseóg or fact, the dry surely will favour Kerry’s second religion. Kerry will be at their best in good weather.
This week I met up with so many people who were very willing to record their views on who, how and why they think Kerry or Donegal will win.
“Every game is different, and you have
to be able to adapt to the way the game goes on any particular day, especially on All-Ireland final day when the stakes are at their highest,” said Séamus Moynihan, captain of the 2000 All-Ireland-winning Kerry team.
Séamus, you were on that great Regional College Tralee (now MTU) which won Sigerson medals along with current county managers Pádraic Joyce of Galway and Jim McGuinness of Donegal. In Donegal, the slogan they have is ‘Jimmy is winning’. What is he like, and how good a strategist is he?
“Jim was a very good player and was much underrated. As a strategist, yes, he is a great thinker of the game. Look what he did in coaching Donegal and did a lot of coaching with soccer teams (Celtic, Beijing Guoan, and Charlotte Independence). No doubt he has brought that expertise into how Donegal are now playing, a very fast running game, launching attacks from the very back of defence in sweeping upfield attacks. Look how he has turned the Donegal players into a winning team in two years. They are now playing with great confidence and
have adapted so well to the new rules. Under the old rules, Donegal were ultra defensive with the majority of the team behind the ball setting up a wall that was so hard to break down.
“I look to a big team display by Kerry. We all know how good David Clifford is, and he is brilliant, but this is no one-man team, and it is the team display that lays the foundation for victory.”
As a former defender what advice do you have for the Kerry defence?
“The whole defence is solid, and the Kerry half-back line has a vital role to play with so much broken ball around midfield. It is amazing how well our midfield is coping with key players like Diarmuid O’Connor and Barry Dan (O’Sullivan) out injured, missing out on the big day after playing so long all season. It is cruel luck on these players and on any player who gives so much and then gets injured at the crucial time.
“However, look how well Mark O’Shea and Seán O’Brien coped with the big challenge from Tyrone in the middle of the field. I look to the team display, which is vital for winning and on any particular day a few players will be brilliant to get the team over the line. It will take that to win.”
I also spoke to Declan O’Keeffe, holder of two All-Ireland medals. Declan, it is remarkable that the Rathmore club has produced two outstanding goalkeepers winning All-Irelands with Kerry. Isn’t Shane (Ryan) producing All Star displays all year?
“He certainly is, and he was that good all the way up from underage with Rathmore and Kerry. We were very fortunate to have so many teachers in our local national schools who promoted football so well and other great men in the club like Jinks (Dónal O’Leary), Dermie Moynihan and many more who gave a lifetime of service to the GAA. We should always remember our schools and club who encouraged us from an early age and help us develop.”
You are domiciled in Clare as a garda for many years away from your Kingdom home of football.
“Yes, and hurling is the big attraction in Clare, the reverse situation to Kerry. However football is strong in West Clare. I was in Croke Park for the Kerry games with my children all dressed out in their Kerry colours and so proud of them in green and gold. That meant a lot to me.”
Are you confident for Sunday?
“Yes, you must always go into any game with confidence, but you need to get it all together on All-Ireland final day. Small things matter. Hitting the woodwork –and boy what relief that is for a goalkeeper - or your free taker being accurate on the day can makes all the difference. Yes, I think Kerry are coming right at the right time and in close contests we have match winners.”
Seamus Mac Gearailt, another Kerry All-Ireland winner, says “beidh an lá leo” - they will win the day.
Hold on a while Séamus until I translate as we go. How do you see the game going?
“Tradition counts for a lot and Kerry teams proved that better than any other county. Just keep doing what they have been doing especially the way they have attacked once it became serious after the group stages. Use the same style as we did so well against Armagh and Tyrone. Get the ball in quickly and smartly into the scoring area and we have plenty scoring ability there. The backs are doing fine. Midfielders are doing so well. So why dally outside when the new rules suit the forwards.”
Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Kerry’s outstanding LGFA player for decades before winning that coveted All-Ireland medal in 2024, says “Ciarraí dar ndóigh”.
“Séamus has said it all there and as a forward what you want most of all is the quick ball in. If the build -up is too slow and predictable the backs get a great chance to cover up. Why waste time out
the field when you have the scoring power inside?
“Play the football style that we are best at. Win the ball, contest everything and deliver it fast into the scoring forwards who have proved that they can score so freely as Seán O’Shea did against Armagh, and David Clifford did in the Tyrone match. Don’t forget the other forwards too. They may only score a point or two, but they assist in so many other scores. Ciarraí Abú.”
Mickey Ned O’Sullivan, captain of the 1975 Kerry team, is also optimistic.
“I had a great view from the Upper Cusack (Stand) and had concerns about midfield in the first 15 minutes with the amount of broken play picked up by Tyrone. However, Kerry got to grips with it and we prospered closing down those empty spaces.
“The toll of injuries on Kerry in this campaign has been a blessing in disguise.
Four or five subs would have been sitting on the bench untried. Haven't they showed what they can do? They have prospered when given the chance. Kerry have been forced to build and are coming along nicely.
“Another big factor may be that Donegal have played 10 championship games and have had to peak several times. Kerry have only had to peak twice. The key point is will Donegal be able to bring the same intensity once more? You can only go to the well so many times. Kerry will be fresher and that may be enough for Kerry to win and in a tight game.”
Kieran O’Leary was co-captain with clubmate Fionn Fitzgerald when Kerry defeated Donegal in the 2014 All-Ireland football final.
Kieran, the game has changed a lot since 2014….
“It has indeed with far more open play and that suits forwards and spectators. I am impressed the way Kerry keep improving. Look at the Tyrone game. Tyrone were in control for the first 15 minutes but Mark O’Shea then did so well, flicking the ball down so accurately to his teammates that Kerry were able to set up so many scoring chances to build up a winning lead. The winning secret is to convert every opportunity into a score. I say Kerry will win.”
What does Danny Healy-Rae reckon?
“They have an almighty chance. Sure,
look what they have done to Armagh and Tyrone already. I give them a mighty vote of confidence, all of them, and that includes everyone on the panel who has trained so hard in the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney that they all deserve that medal.
“Look at the sacrifices they’ve made. I hear that they trained very hard and neither God nor man will stop them on Sunday to bring back the Sam Maguire to the home of football. I'll tell you now for a fact, Kerry are going to Croke Park, Dublin for well over a hundred years and they have brought back the Sam Maguire more often than any other county.” Are you giving Donegal any chance, Danny?
“I’ll put it to you like this…” Wink, wink. Don’t they always have the last say. Sin, sin go fóill.

After a hugely successful few days on the fairways of Maine Valley Members Golf Club, Firies GAA was proud to host the weekend’s prize-giving ceremony last Saturday evening in Henderson’s of Firies.
The event was held in memory of the late Donie McCarthy, whose legacy remains a cornerstone of the club’s history.
More than sixty teams took part in the Golf Classic, coming together not just to compete, but to celebrate Donie’s lasting impact on Firies GAA. Throughout the weekend, stories were shared, recounting memorable victories, the occasional hard-fought loss, and most importantly, reflecting on the people like Donie who helped shape the club’s journey.
Many fondly mentioned how proud Donie would be to see the recent opening of the club’s new juvenile training pitch in Ballinvarrig, a milestone he would have cherished.
Donie’s wife, Bernie McCarthy, and their
daughters continue to take great pride in this annual occasion, where his dedication to the club is remembered with warmth and respect. Bernie presented the prizes to the winning teams, with the top award being retained for a second consecutive year by Michael O’Sullivan (captain) along with Dan Egan, David McAllister and John O'Driscoll.
Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy played her part on a historic occasion for Irish athletics as the women’s 4x100m relay team posted a new national record at the recent Diamond League meeting in London.
The Killarney Valley AC athlete combined with teammates Ciara Neville (Emerald AC), Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn AC) and Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) to clock a blistering time of 43.73 seconds, beating the previous record of 43.80 that had stood for the past seven years.
The Irish girls finished fourth in a brilliant race which was won by Great Britain. The quartet were running together for just the second time as they continue to prepare for next August’s European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
Meanwhile, Sarah Healy (UCD AC) finished third in the Women’s Mile; Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) finished fourth in the Women’s 200m, registering a season’s best time in the process; and in the Men’s 800m Mark English (Finn Valley AC) ran the third fastest time of his career on his way to seventh spot.
and Morgan McMahon extended their sincere thanks to everyone who supported the event. A special acknowledgment was given to L&M Construction, New York, for their generous sponsorship, which played a key role in the success of the golf classic. Appreciation was also extended to those teams who
participated, donated spot prizes, sponsored tee boxes, purchased raffle tickets, the local businesses who helped sell raffle tickets, the Maine Valley Members Golf Club, Frances and Johnny Henderson of Henderson’s, and the hardworking events committee. It was a true community effort, honouring a man who gave so much to his club.
The Kerry ladies’ bowed out of the senior football championship at the semi-final stage last weekend as they came up short against a determined Meath side in Tullamore.
The Kingdom were attempting to reach their fourth consecutive All-Ireland final but they were met with a Royal outfit who were hell-bent on causing an upset. A strong defensive display laid the foundation for the win with goals by Kellie Cole and Sarah Wall making all the difference on the scoreboard. The margin of victory in the end was six points (2-12 to 1-9) as Kerry’s reign as champions came to an end. It was always going to be a challenging
year given the high turnover of players and a new management team but the group applied themselves incredibly well. There will be disappointment, of course, that they couldn’t quite go all the way again this time around but they are well positioned to give it another go in 2026.
Meath now advance to the decider where they will meet Leinster rivals Dubin, who had a tense extra-time victory over Galway in the other semi-final. Hannah Tyrrell equalised with the last kick of normal time before the Dubs took control to book their spot in the final, which will take place on Sunday, August 3 in Croke Park.
We would like to wish the Senior Kerry Football Team the very best of luck in the All-Ireland Football Final on Sunday from all of us at Nua Vista and The Ring of Kerry Golf Club!
On behalf of Sheen Falls Lodge, we would like to extend our very best wishes to the Kerry Football Team & Management in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final.

We were delighted to welcome teams from Cromane to Scartaglin and a big thanks to Justin Healy and Co. for a great morning. Thanks to all the helpers for the cake sale and all the people who baked the beautiful buns and cakes.
U14 BOYS: We came out flying in the first half of this U14 East Kerry league game against Kilcummin, played on Tuesday evening in Direen. We racked up an impressive first half total of 4-08 open up a commanding lead by half time. The intensity, movement, and finishing continued in the second half and despite both sides missing a few bodies, we took full advantage and didn’t take their foot off the pedal. By the final whistle, the scoreboard read 5-17 to 4-03, to record an opening round win. A well-deserved victory built on a strong foundation early in the match. Credit to Kilcummin for battling and thanks to referee Evan Horan for officiating.
MINOR BOYS: A disappointing end to the group stages of the County League Division 1 which have been generally quiet positive but there was a lack of intensity in the defensive phase, a lack of breaking ball winning ability from kickouts and a lack of efficiency in front of goal at crucial moments which proved costly. The lads will be on action in a semi-final in two weeks’ time so plenty to work on in the meantime. Well done to the amalgamated South Kerry team on their first win. Final score Killarney Legion 4-13 Na Fianna 3-19.
LOTTO took place July 21st. Num-
bers drawn were 3, 4, 24, 26. Jackpot of €9,500 was NOT WON. 4 patrons matched 3 numbers and receive €100 each. Jackpot for draw on July 28th will be €9,800. Play online.

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Our minors produced a real gritty performance with a win away to Annascaul/Lispole on Monday evening. This game was played in atrocious conditions with a gale force wind and driving rain for the most part. Fossa played with the elements in the first half and Fionn Doyle landed a two pointer which was quickly followed by a point from Cathal Breen inside the opening two minutes. The wind proved tricky for both sides, and it took a while for Fossa to get to grips with it, they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession around the middle third through Mark Kennelly and Ryan Brady while Jack Spillane dealt with any danger in defence. Scores from Shay McCormick, Harry O’Connor, Karl James O’Neill and a brace form Dylan O’Meara left Fossa ahead 0-11 to 0-2 at the break. Playing into the wind and rain in the second half, this team really showed their true spirit, Cathal Breen kicked the first score of the half and then David Butler kicked a fantastic point after a lung bursting run forward. Cathal Breen added another in the 10th minute before Annascaul/ Lispole got their first of the half. The home side kicked the next five points without reply and they scored a goal in the 20th minute, but Fossa never panicked. Dara Whelton pulled off a great save and was getting great distance into his kickouts which was admirable given the conditions, they defended with great tenacity without giving away frees, the midfield fought and won lots of ball and the forwards worked their socks off. Harry O’Connor kicked a free to put Fossa four ahead in the 23rd minute, Annascaul/Lispole got their second goal in the 25th minute but again, Dylan O’Meara put two between the sides with time running out. The home side pulled
a point back and got a free for a two pointer which would have won them the game, but they missed it. It would have been harsh for Fossa to have lost it as their performance deserved the win and it finished Fossa 0-16, Annascaul/ Lispole 2-09.

UNDER 12 BOYS: Kilcummin welcomed Kenmare to Kilcummin for the 1st Round of the East Region U12 league, and both our Green and Red teams delivered fantastic performances, securing wins by a few points. The Green Team saw Kyle Morrissey make his first appearance in goal, putting in a strong performance with excellent kick outs. The defence of Luke, Ryan, Daniel, David and Paddy battled hard all night. Dylan and Rowan in the middle of the field worked tirelessly and upfront, Jack, Josh, Thomas and Warren were full of running and caused havoc all night. Meanwhile, the Red Team produced a superb all-round display, controlling the game from start to finish with great teamwork in a well-earned victory. The first half saw Kilcummin set the tone early with some fine scores from multiple players. A dominant midfield and solid defence helped build a strong lead by halftime. Kenmare regrouped after the break, fighting back with some excellent goals, but Kilcummin held firm to secure the win. A big thanks to John and Cormac for refereeing and to Kenmare for a competitive but sporting game.
UNDER 13 LADIES FOOTBALL: Best of luck to our U13 girls who play Firies in their East Kerry semi-final on 23 July away to Firies. All support appreciated. UNDER 14 BOYS: It was a tough opener for the under 14 boys A team in the first round of the East Kerry league when they suffered a 5-17 to 4-3 loss to Legion.
UNDER 16 BOYS: Despite a 3-17 to 3-16 loss in their final round game to Listry our Under 16’s have qualified for the Division 1 county semi-final where they are drawn to play Na Gaeil. Goals by Daragh Keane, Oran Lynch and Dean Moynihan had pushed the team into a six-point lead with time almost up but late goals by the visitors edged a highly entertaining contest.

Finally our Over 18 full set mixed and our Over 35 full set mixed were both placed 2nd and head to Wexford also. Many thanks to the Moriarty School of Dancing for their work with our sets and to the musicians who played for our set dancers throughout the week. Mary O'Connor gave a superb performance in the 15-18 Ladies English competition but unfortunately it wasn't her day, and Mary will no doubt be back again.
