The listing, advertised at €650 per month, is located 25 minutes outside Killarney town and includes electricity and Wi-Fi, with stipulations of no pets or smokers.
This type of offering highlights the current pressures in the local rental market. Recent reports indicate a significant lack of long-term rental properties in Kerry, with average rents across the county reaching €1,443 in the final quarter of 2024, marking a 64% increase since 2020.
tion due to the high cost and scarcity of accommodation.
The mobile home listing highlights the urgent challenges facing property seekers in the area, where long-term rental options have become extremely limited.
House prices have also seen substantial rises, making home ownership increasingly difficult for many.
Local representatives have previously highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that many working individuals and young families find themselves unable to afford market prices for homes or qualify for social housing. This has led to concerns about people being forced to remain in their family homes indefinitely or consider emigra-
As of this week, only six residential properties are available for rent in Killarney and surrounding areas on Daft.ie. Cllr Brendan Cronin will raise the issue at Monday’s Ordinary Meeting of Kerry County Council as a result of the Government's recent decision to make the whole country a 'Rent Pressure Zone'.
The Killarney Advertiser understands that Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company may cease trading this weekend.
While there has been no official confirmation, the closure has been reported in the national business media
A spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser on Thursday evening: “I hope to have a statement from the company Friday morning.”
The potential closure of the landmark building on the Ring of Kerry will cost 50 jobs and will be a blow to Killarney’s tourism offering.
This follows the company’s announcement in April that it had filed for examinership in an effort to restructure and attract new investment.
At the time, directors cited a range of challenges including the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased costs, supply chain disruptions, and delays in the opening of its Fossa distillery.
A planned merger with a US-based partner also fell through earlier this year. Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company had hoped the examinership process would offer a path toward securing its future.
Killarney Crafty Ladies have raised €29,052 for Kerry Hospice Foundation/Palliative Care by rescuing and restoring teddy bears from charity shops.
Formed in 2013, the group includes Betty Benson, Peg Coffey, Honor Doyle, Margaret McCarthy, Kate O’Connor, Brid O’Donoghue, Eilish O’Sullivan, and Colette Sorensen. Their idea was to collect teddy bears from shops in Kerry and further afield, including Cork, Limerick, and Galway, give them complete makeovers, and sell them at Halloween and Christmas events at the Killarney Outlet Centre. The group met monthly to knit and sew new outfits for the toys.
“We are incredibly grateful to Paul Sherry, Noreen O’Sullivan and the staff at
Killarney Outlet Centre for all their support,” said group spokesperson Margaret McCarthy. “We also want to thank Pat Doolan from Kerry Hospice for his guidance and help. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
Mr Doolan, Chairperson of the Killarney Branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, acknowledged the Crafty Ladies' contribution over the past 12 years.
“They’ve combined a fun hobby with serious fundraising. We wish them well with future efforts,” he said.
As All-Ireland football final fever grips Kerry, a Glenflesk-based councillor is calling for action to ensure all fans can access live coverage of key matches.
Cllr John O’Donoghue will table a motion at Monday’s Special Planning Meeting of Kerry County Council, calling on the GAA to review its current policy of showing games behind a paywall on online platforms. He argues that this move goes against the amateur ethos of the organisation and excludes people who cannot ac-
cess or afford streaming services.
“If they will not commit to removing the paywall due to financial constraints,” Cllr. O’Donoghue said, “then the GAA should work with RTÉ or another national broadcaster to explore making the subscription service available through the TV licence and shown on a dedicated channel, like RTÉ News or a new service.”
The councillor said this would ensure older members of society and those living in areas with poor internet coverage can continue to follow the games on regular television.
Four years on and still no
Cllr Brendan Cronin is again calling on Kerry County Council to deliver a long-promised 120-metre footpath linking the new Madams Height housing development to the N22 junction.
He has submitted another formal motion for discussion at the next Ordinary Meeting of Kerry County Council, scheduled for Monday in Tralee. This is not the first time the issue has been raised.
Back in March 2021, during discussions on the future layout of Madam’s
Hill junction, Cllr Cronin highlighted safety concerns for local walkers and called for the path to be installed.
At the time, council officials said the footpath was the responsibility of the developer, but nearly five years later, with the estate now fully occupied and pedestrian traffic increasing, the path has still not materialised.
Cllr Cronin’s latest motion asks whether the Council has secured both the strip of land and the funding required to build the path. The delay continues to frustrate residents who say pedestrian safety is being ignored.

book and to steer the project to fruition and it includes current principal Seán Coffey, retired teacher Mike Leahy, past pupils, journalists John O’Mahony and Donal Hickey and graphic designer Eamonn Mulvihill, as well as photographer Michelle Cooper Galvin who has documented life in the school with her camera for several years.
The book committee has appealed to any members of the public, including past pupils and their families, who have any memories, anecdotes, photographs, documents or press clippings that might be of interest, to send them to semhistory@stbrendanscollege.ie.

ation, hosted Megan and Maureen Dobbin at the council chamber.
The visit is part of Killarney’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with its sister cities, which include Scottsdale and Phoenix in Arizona, USA.

Grow Remote will host a business networking event with a twist next Wednesday, July 23, at Dr Crokes GAA Club.
‘Rounders & Remote Connections’ is aimed at remote and hybrid workers living or working in the Killarney area.
The evening begins at 6.30pm and will feature a casual game of rounders alongside opportunities for professional networking in a relaxed setting. It’s open to all experience levels and promises a mix of sport and social connection.
“Working remotely doesn’t have to mean working alone,” said Victoria McCormack, Community Facilitator with Grow Remote Ireland. “This event is about building community, getting active, and reminding ourselves that professional
networking can happen anywhere, even on a rounders field.”
Grow Remote is a social enterprise that supports remote employees in building local connections. The organisation hopes the event will encourage workers to meet others in similar roles and reduce the isolation often associated with remote working.
Registration is open online through Eventbrite. The event is free to attend and exclusive to remote and hybrid professionals.
Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald will bring a motion to Monday’s Special Planning Meeting of Kerry County Council calling for updates on the future of Farranfore Train Station.
The motion asks that the Minister for Transport and Irish Rail outline plans and timelines for the long-awaited development of the station, which serves as a key junction on the county’s rail network.
Fitzgerald’s call for action on Farranfore Station, but we urge him and his fellow councilors to go one step further.
would also reduce delays in Farranfore village, with the level crossing holding up traffic multiple times daily.
And what of the current station building?
The Killarney Advertiser supports Cllr
The station, while strategically located between Tralee and Killarney, has seen little improvement in recent years, despite its importance to local and regional transport links.
Kerry has a storied railway heritage and deserves a musuem to show it all off.
Why not move the train station to a site directly opposite Kerry Airport?
It’s a simple solution that would finally link rail and air travel properly in Kerry.
Right now, passengers face a 20-minute walk along a busy, fast-moving road, in all weather conditions. That’s not acceptable in 2025. Relocating the station
It’s a piece of local history. Why not preserve it and turn it into a transport museum celebrating the rich railway heritage of Kerry?
It’s time for joined-up thinking. Rail and air should meet properly and this is the time and place to do it.
Killarney Community College student Babatunde Smith has been selected to represent Ireland in the high jump at the SIAB Schools International in Derby, UK later this month.

Originally from Ukraine, Babatunde has
made Killarney his home and has been a regular on the athletics circuit in recent years, winning county, Munster and national titles in high jump, hurdles and sprints.
He recently won the Tailteann Games and followed that up by becoming the Athletics Ireland U16 national champion with a personal best of 1.88 metres.

The Gleneagle Concert Band recently returned from a highly successful tour of Seville and Gibraltar.
The Killarney-based band, now in its 44th year, performed a joint evening concert with the Midleton Concert Band beneath the spectacular Las Setas structure in the heart of Seville.
Las Setas, a large, predominantly wooden structure, features restaurants, a performance square, an archaeological museum, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Seville’s old town, providing a truly unique setting for the concert.
This marked the band's 8th international tour, following previous visits to Holland, Germany, and Sweden in the 1980s, Austria in 2002, Paris in 2007, Lisbon in 2013, and Monaco & Cannes in 2017.
Tour organiser and Music Development Officer Vincent Condon commented:
“The concert at Las Setas, with its spectacular backdrop, was a wonderful spectacle and an amazing experience for the players. There was a huge band on stage under the baton of Robert O'Brien, and the audience response was fantastic, with long applauses, cheering, singing, and clapping. Both bands performed superbly on the night, and the tour offered an unforgettable cultural, musical, and social experience for everyone who travelled. It was a stunning success, and we are already making plans for our next concert tour to Italy.”
Highlights of the five-day tour included
visits to the Royal Alcázar of Seville, Plaza de España, a cable car ride to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, a Guadalquivir River cruise, swimming at Catalan Bay Beach, and a tour of Seville Cathedral, among many others.
Band Manager Ciarán Lynch added: “The tour was outstanding and was enjoyed immensely by both bands. Memories and friendships that will last a lifetime were
created, and we were delighted to share such a wonderful few days with the Midleton Concert Band.”
Parents interested in enrolling their child in lessons at the Gleneagle School of Music or in joining the Gleneagle Concert Band should contact Vincent Condon at 087 2229513. Past members and adults with prior musical experience are also welcome.

Concerns have been raised locally over the long-term future of burial space at Gneeveguilla Graveyard.
Community members and local representatives have expressed fears that the site is reaching capacity, with limited room available for future burials. The issue has been raised informally in recent weeks and is now expected to be brought to the attention of Kerry County Council.
Locals are calling for clarity on plans for the future of the graveyard and whether an extension or alternative site is being considered.
"This is a sensitive but important issue for families in the area," one local resident said. "People deserve peace of mind that space will be available when it is needed." The matter is expected to be raised officially at municipal district level in the coming weeks.

Killarney Rotary Club held its annual presidential handover last week at the Great Southern Killarney, marking the end of Ciara Irwin Foley’s term and the beginning of Sherry O’Callaghan’s leadership.
Ms Irwin Foley stepped down after serving as Club President from July 2024 to July 2025—her second term, having previously held the role in 2007–2008.
She said: “The year absolutely flew. I enjoyed it even more this time round. I want to thank my family, especially Dermot, and all our Rotary members, volunteers, and supporters for their help throughout the year. It’s been an honour.”
Ciara highlighted a busy year for the club, including events like the Annual Afternoon Tea, Youth Leadership Development Competition, and International Women’s Day Lunch.
She also represented the club at numerous district events and was proud to present three Paul Harris Fellowship Awards. A standout moment was the launch of the Peter B. Irwin Memorial Award in memory of her late father, a founding member of the club.
She will remain active in Rotary, taking on the roles of Assistant Governor for Kerry and Limerick and helping coordinate the Youth Leadership programme.
Incoming President Sherry O’Callaghan was officially welcomed and received the chain of office during the handover.
Originally from Canada, Sherry joined Rotary in Newfoundland in 2008 and transferred to the local club after relocating with her husband, Patrick, four years ago. Sherry said: “Rotary’s values have become a compass in my life. I bring passion, enthusiasm, and a clear vision. I’m grateful for the trust and opportunity and I’ll do my very best to serve this club with heart and integrity.”
Founded in 1983, Killarney Rotary Club continues to grow and remains active in the community. For more information, contact killarneyrotaryclub@gmail.com or visit their social media pages.
The Cannonball supercar road trip will return to Kerry this year, with confirmed stops in both Killarney and Tralee.
The 2025 edition of Cannonball takes place from September 12 to 14 starting at the Johnstown Estate in Enfield and visiting towns and counties across Ireland, including Ballymaloe, Clare, Sligo, Cavan and Naas, with exact timings and routes for the Kerry stage to be announced soon.
Cannonball is the largest organised road trip in Europe, attracting more than 200,000 spectators and featuring high-performance vehicles from Ferrari,
Lamborghini, McLaren, Porsche, Aston Martin and more.
The event is a major fundraiser for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. The Kerry leg of the journey is expected to draw large crowds as the event brings its unique blend of cars, music, entertainment and fancy-dress festivities to the streets of Tralee and Killarney. Local businesses and tourism are set to benefit from the visit, with a strong economic boost estimated in previous years.
Further details on the route and stop times in Tralee and Killarney will be confirmed by Cannonball organisers in the coming weeks.
A free family-friendly event focused on wool and sustainable living will take place at The Nature Hub in the Gap of Dunloe on August 13.
The Nature Hub is hosting the event in partnership with The Wise Wool Project and Curragmore Farm. Families will get the chance to learn about the journey of wool from fleece to fabric and its importance in Irish rural life. Activities will include wool washing, carding, spinning, and weaving. The event aims to raise awareness about
the growing issue of wool being discarded as waste, as it now often costs more to shear sheep than the wool is worth. It will also highlight the potential for creative and community-based solutions to make better use of this resource.
There will be workshops, craft stations, and talks, with input from local artists, farmers, and educators.
It runs from 11am to 1pm and admission is free, but tickets must be reserved online at thenaturehub.ie/events.
The event is supported by Kerry County Council and Creative Communities.

There was a strong turnout on the shores of Castlelough Bay last Sunday as the Flesk Valley Rowing Club hosted the first Kerry County Championship qualifying regatta of the season.
Crews from Fossa, St. Brendan’s, Workmen, and the host club Flesk Valley took on visiting coastal clubs in a packed programme of 20 races.
The regatta was the first of two qualifiers for the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships, which take place next month in Glenarm, County Antrim.
The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Martin Grady, who welcomed all participating clubs and wished them well for the day.
The Killarney Credit Union-sponsored event delivered drama and excitement across all age groups - from under-12 right up to the Masters category. Spectators lined the shore to cheer on their crews in mixed weather conditions, as tight contests unfolded on the water.
Flesk Valley Rowing Club Chairman John Fleming said: “It was a brilliant event and a great turnout. We are thankful to
all the clubs who came, and to our own committee, members and parents who worked hard behind the scenes to make it happen.”
He also acknowledged the support of Mary B Teahan, Johanna King, Andrew Wharton, Máire Twiss, Kevin Crowley, and the Kerry Coastal Rowing Association.
“A special thanks to Leane’s Tool Hire, Hegarty’s of Castlelough, Muckross Rowing Club, and the Order of Malta Killarney for their support on the day,” he added.
John also paid tribute to the National Parks and Wildlife Service, saying their guidance and assistance were vital in planning and delivering the regatta.
The focus now shifts to the next round of county championship racing in Valentia Island on July 26, where the Killarney clubs will fine-tune preparations ahead of the national championships in August.
A Toronto police officer who went viral for shouting "Up Kerry" to a Donegal woman on the streets of the Canadian city has strong Killarney connections.
Conor Holly, a serving officer with Toronto Police, caught the attention of Letterkenny native Clare O’Brien when she was stuck in traffic wearing her Donegal jersey shortly after her county’s GAA side booked a place in the All-Ireland final against Kerry.
Conor leaned in the car window and shouted “Up Kerry.”
The brief moment led to a friendly chat and even a tour invitation to his station.
Clare later posted the video to Donegal Daily, where it quickly went viral.
It turns out the Toronto officer has roots deep in Kerry. His father is Canadian, but his mother is from Belfast. However, it is his paternal grandmother that ties him to

Bob Dylan will perform two nights at the Gleneagle INEC Arena in Killarney on November 23 and 24, as part of his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour.

formance. The pouches can only be unlocked in designated areas of the venue. This measure is being implemented to ensure a distraction-free environment. According to organisers, “Our eyes open a little more and our senses are slightly sharper when we lose the technological crutch we’ve grown accustomed to.” Medical exemptions will be permitted for those who rely on their phones for treatment.

Independent Galway West TD Catherine Connolly was the first candidate to confirm her presidential campaign.
The Galway West TD publicly declared her intention to run this week. The Social Democrats, People before Profit and a handful of Independent TDs stood by her side as she announced her bid outside Leinster House on Wednesday. Connolly spoke about several pressing issues while speaking to reporters. She expressed her support for a United Ireland and how she believes it is coming soon, adding that the Good Friday Agreement set out a framework for that. Connolly emphasised that
she has her own vision, support and values and she would never describe herself as a continuity candidate of President Michael D Higgins. She said that she is proud that President Higgins spoke out about Gaza and added: “He showed courage when courage was necessary.”. Catherine Connolly began her political career as a Labour councillor in 1999 when she was elected to Galway City Council. In 2007 she planned to run in the general election as a running mate of Michael D Higgins, however the party opted not to run a second candidate in that constituency, paving the way for Connolly’s departure from the party. She ran as an Independ-
ent candidate in both the 2007 and 2011 elections missing out on a seat, however she was elected for the Galway West constituency in the 2016 general election. She served as Leas Ceann Comhairle from 2020-2024, becoming the first woman to hold the position. The announcement comes as speculation has been growing in recent weeks of potential front runners for the presidential seat. Last week, Kerry MEP Sean Kelly announced his decision not to contest the election as a Fine Gael candidate. This paves the way for Former EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness to run in the race as the only Fine Gael nominee.
The last of the Blasket-born community in America has passed away this week. Máiréad Kearney-Shea, who was born on the West Kerry island, was 102 and lived in Springfield Massachusetts for more than 60 years.
The Blasket Centre paid tribute to Ms
Kearney-Shea and offered their condolences to her family, adding they were “privileged to have known her, to have marvelled at her spirit and her zest for life.” Máiréad Kearney-Shea was a remarkable woman. She was the youngest of seven, born on the Blasket Islands and like so many others before her, she emigrated to Springfield in the 1940s where
she built a family. Springfield has a long connection with the Blasket Islanders as a large amount of people moved there, and ultimately many settled in a place called Hungry Hill. It’s believed that the building of railways was the reason so many people moved to the city. In 2024, the Mayor of Springfield declared an official city day in her honour.
Irish farmers face threat to livelihood after proposal to cut supports
A new draft proposal from the European Commission could mean a cut in supports for Irish farmers. The European Commission proposed a cut to the support scheme in its draft long-term budget for 2028 – 2034. CAP funding would fall by €87 million under the new proposal. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was introduced in 1962 in an aim to support farmer incomes. It plays a big part in the EU budget which amounts to almost €400bn and benefits around 7 million people who avail of it across Europe. Sinn Fein MEP for Ireland South Kathleen Funchion has criticized the proposal to abandon the previous CAP funding structure. She said the proposal poses a huge threat to the livelihoods of many farmers across Ireland and Europe. She emphasised the importance of the system and claims it needs to be protected. “The problems of food security, farm succession and the attractiveness of rural living are not going to be solved with this unconvincing proposal.” added MEP Funchion. She urged the commission to work with European and National parliaments to come to a solution which delivers certainty for farmers across Ireland Europe.
More progress has been made by the Road Safety Authority to allow learner drivers to sit their driving test.
As of this week, the average national waiting time to receive a driving test invitation has dropped to 14.4 weeks which surpasses the RSA’s mid-July target of 18 weeks, a 20% improvement. Just over two weeks ago the waiting times were 16.3 weeks which is a big reduction
from April’s 27 week waiting time. The RSA remains firmly on course to achieve its long-term goal of bringing average waiting times down to 10 weeks by September. This week alone, 10 new driving testers have joined the service, with an additional 17 testers beginning training.
RSA Director of Partnerships and External Affairs said that the steady reduction in waiting times is real progress but there’s more to do in the coming weeks.

Concerns over reduced pub operating hours in Killorglin during Puck Fair were raised in the Dáil this week.
Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae brought the issue before the Taoiseach. Last week Judge David Waters ruled that no exemption should be allowed for pubs in Killorglin to operate until 3am for that particular weekend, despite having done so for the past 50 years. Deputy Healy-Rae said the 14 publicans, who made the application, were told that it would put a strain on Garda resources. He questioned why there are constantly requests in Dublin to operate city pubs until 6am but pubs in Kerry are not allowed to stay open for an
extra hour for one weekend of the year. He pleaded with the government to allow the tradition to continue and invited the Taoiseach, Minister for Justice and Ceann Comhairle to Puck Fair to see for themselves, adding that “all are welcome.” The Taoiseach responded to the Deputy by saying this was the first time it has ever been presented in the Dáil that the Deputy wants them to go to the pub at 3am and added “there are many times in Kerry where there are many lock-ins.” Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the Minister for Justice has heard the Deputy’s pleas and has undertaken to go down to Puck Fair, however the Taoiseach himself may not be around that weekend.
gised for any inconvenience caused during the temporary closure. He said: “The health and safety of our customers is our utmost priority, and the closure was a necessary step to ensure that all structural issues were properly addressed.” adding that the team is looking forward to welcoming customers back again. Customers are advised to check the Aqua Dome website and social media pages for updates.
The latest Irish Times Ipos B & A opinion poll has found that Fianna Fáil support remains steady at 22% while Fine Gael’s support has increased by 1% (17%) Support for Sinn Fein has declined by 4% (22%) since April.

Killarney and District Motor Club held its second Endurance Trial of the year last weekend.
The event was a round of the Škoda Parts Ireland National Endurance Championship and was based at the Old Killarney Inn and Woodland Riding Centre. Over 40 crews took part, with a record local entry. Owen Murphy and Patrick O’Sullivan won overall in a Toyota Yaris. Top local finishers were Timmy Lynch and Peter Falvey. They placed seventh overall and won the John Flynn Trophy as the best KDMC crew.
Crews tackled 23 timed tests across two days in Killorglin, Faha, Firies, Currow and Ballyhar.
Rockfield co-driver Shane Buckley sits at the top of the Triton Showers Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship co-driver standings heading into this Sunday’s Sligo Stages Rally.
Buckley, who was due to partner Sam Moffett in a Hyundai i20 R5 in Sligo claimed fourth overall on the Raven’s Rock Rally two weeks ago — a result that pushed him into the lead of the standings with 61 points after four rounds. However, the championship allows for dropped scores, and when those are ap-
plied, Buckley trails rival Tom Murphy by a single point. Murphy has 50 points to Buckley’s 49, meaning the second half of the season is set up for a close title fight.
Sam is now unavailable for the Sligo Rally but Buckley has teamed up with promising Donegal driver David Kelly in a Volkswagen Polo R5. They placed a late entry and will carry 171 on the doors but will run inside the top ten on Sunday. Several Kerry crews are also entered for the Sligo Rally this weekend. Mike Quinn and Kieran Doherty return in their familiar Mk2 Escort, running in Class 14. Dave
Slattery and Denis Coffey, also in a Mk2 Escort, are entered in Class 13.
Mossie Costello, is entered a Fiesta Rally4 and will contest Class 2.
Eugene Buckley and Aaron Williams complete the Kerry Motor Club representation in a Toyota Starlet (Class 9).
While the focus is on Sligo this weekend, two Killarney co-drivers will be in action on Saturday’s Down Rally.
Elaine Ní Shé is navigating for Richard O’Lone in a Ford Fiesta Rally3, and John McCarthy is on the notes for Banbridge’s John Devlin in a Mk2 Escort.

“The epitome of luxury… One of the highlights of my year” Lucinda O’Sullivan, Irish Independent
| By Clodagh Nagle
We’re already halfway through July, but it’s never too late for a trip away. There is so much to consider when going abroad. Destination, flights, accommodation and the cost. We’re so lucky to have an airport in Kerry. I think we take it for granted sometimes. It’s quick, easy and convenient. Where else would you get it? Imagine having to trek up to Dublin all of the time? No thank you! And let’s not forget Cork Airport, only an hour over the road from most places in Kerry which again saves us the long journey to Dublin.
I haven’t had a holiday abroad yet this year, granted I am just back from Australia around two months so I haven’t really had much time to think about it. But I would like to squeeze in a trip before the year is out. That’s the beauty of being back at home, I get to explore Europe again. I’ve been looking at potential destinations over the last few days. I like to put in serious research before jetting off. And if I say so myself, I’m pretty good at getting flight deals. Last Christmas when I flew from Sydney to Dublin, I managed to snag return flights for 2,000 Australian dollars, which is just over 1.1k in euros
(pretty good for Christmas time).
So come along with me as I figure out where to go next. I’m leaning towards a quick weekend getaway this year, I’ll save my big summer holiday for next year.
Let’s look at where you can fly from Kerry Airport this summer.
A quick browse on the Ryanair website shows flights to Germany (Frankfurt-Hahn), Portugal (Faro), Spain (Alicante), London (Luton and Stansted), and Manchester.
Germany caught my eye almost immediately. I travelled to Cologne before but never Frankfurt. But I feel like it’s a great option for a weekend trip, not too far away and packed with potential.
GERMANY (FRANKFURT HAHN)
FROM AUGUST 8 - 10
• Decision time: For a weekend getaway, this looks like a good option. You can fly out of Kerry Airport on a Friday afternoon at 16:40 and land in Frankfurt-Hahn by 19:35. Perfect timing, right? Go to the hotel, check in, go out for a bite to eat and few drinks. Wrong. Once I googled the distance from the airport, it turns out Frank-
furt-Hahn is ages away from the city itself. How far, you ask? 120km or 1 hour and 23 minutes to be exact. Let’s look at how we get out of the airport before we think about booking the flights.
• Transport:
There is a public transport option available. You can take the Flughafenbus from the Airport at 9pm and you’ll get to the city of Frankfurt by 11pm. Depending on where you are staying that could be too late for check in, unless you arrange it with the hotel prior. There are good car rental options for that weekend, an Opel Corsa for €75 sounds good to me. It’ll save a long, stuffy 2-hour bus journey. That’s €37.50 for the weekend when you divide it between two people. I also won’t be the one driving so that’s a bonus.
• Flights & Price:
The flight home departs Frankfurt at 15:00 on the Sunday and lands back to Kerry at 16:05. If you’re living in the Killarney / East Kerry area, you’ll be home by 17:00 so you have the entire evening to get organised for the week ahead. So, tempting! Now I know your next question – what’s the price? Well for those flights, you’d be paying €95.67
for a return ticket with Ryanair. Not bad! But there’s a catch (there always is, says you). Luggage wise, you can only take one small bag to fit under the seat. If you want to add on a 10kg suitcase you’d be forking out another €32.25 making it €127.92 in total. By paying the extra few quid you also get reserved seating and priority boarding.
So far now, flights and car rental are booked and paid for! At the moment, the total is coming to €202.92 for a flight and a car (cheaper if diving the car rental cost, bear that in mind!)
Location:
Your flights are sorted – that’s half the battle. Now there’s a new dilemma. Where exactly should we go?
Here’s why having the rental car is handy. We have two options: head into Frankfurt city or explore a nearby town. When I told my colleague Sean about my travel piece on Frankfurt, he mentioned that there is a lovely German town nestled near the Luxembourg border. That piqued my interest immediately because I love small towns with charm and character. It’s time to decide if we’re looking for a busy city holiday or a quaint countryside escape.
Cities:
Personally, I love a quaint European town. I’m not fussed on the night life, give me a good day of exploring and a glass or two of wine, and I’m happy! But let’s weigh up all our options. The town that was suggested by Sean was called Trier. I took a look, and accommodation was around €300 upwards, and anything cheaper seemed to be outside the town. I had a quick google of ‘Towns near Frankfurt-Hahn airport’ and a TripAdvisor forum popped up with suggestions from people. Traben-Trabach, Bernkastel-Kues, and Cochem were among many suggestions, but prices were too expensive. So of course I checked Frankfurt city prices which vary. Based on 2 adults sharing for that exact weekend, prices are around €170 to €220. Split between 2, you’re looking at roughly €100 each for two nights in a European city, give or take. That’s great when you’re comparing it to Irish hotel prices. Some people are paying well over €400 for a night in Dublin.
Accommodation:
The most affordable hotel I found was a place called Hotel Düsseldorf Hof, priced at just €89 and located a convenient 1.4km from the city centre. Booking.com described it as “perfect” for a two-night stay. That said, the reviews are mixed. One guest mentioned the room felt cramped with no facility to make a hot
drink, while another pointed out that the photos didn’t match the actual room size and there was no curtain. But then again, others praised it for being great value for money and highlighted the friendly reception staff. As with most budget stays, I’d imagine it’s a case of “you get what you pay for.” I don’t usually have expensive taste, but I was curious and filtered the accommodation from high prices to low. The most expensive hotel I found was ‘JW Marriott Hotel Frankfurt.’ This was priced at €442 for two nights. In fairness, that’s well above the average price range for that weekend but I thought it deserved a mention. It’s beautiful with a gorgeous view. Would I pay €442 for it? Probably not but the website photos are tempting, they should give their marketing department a raise! One hotel guest described the experience as unique and said the stay was comfortable. They said they’d be back again! However, I saw a few comments saying the breakfast was overpriced or too cold. That’s the end of that hotel dream!
Value:
Now that we know the cheapest and the most expensive hotel, what’s next? Well, I’ve been taking my travel research very seriously this week so of course, I did my due diligence to make it my mission to find the best hotel available in Frankfurt for that weekend. Who knows, I might influence someone to go on a weekend
getaway (At this rate, I’m influencing myself, I’m very tempted to book these flights now!!) I spent my Monday afternoon trawling through Booking.com this week and found what I think is the best hotel in Frankfurt, taking price, location and overall value into consideration. Which one did I pick? *drumroll please* Lume Boutique Hotel, Autograph Collection seems to be the best option that I could find. It is stunning with a gorgeous colour scheme. It’s described as a firstclass boutique hotel located 5 minutes from the city centre. It looks like it has a nice vibe, the bar / restaurant looks trendy and cool. It’s a steal at €198 for the two nights.
Activities:
What can you do in Frankfurt? That’s a good question. I’ll tell you! I looked on Tripadvisor and found the top ten best things to do! If you want to get your steps in you can see the city by foot on a walking tour. The tour description said you’ll get up close to the standout landmarks, find the most impressive photo points and hear Frankfurt’s history. But maybe you fancy travelling by boat? You can try a sightseeing boat tour along the main river if you’d like. For just €16 you can cruise past the financial district, Frankfurt Cathedral and more! Or you can just stay classic and climb aboard the Hop-on Hop-off tour bus. It’s €22.50 and spins you through all the top attractions. I know that’s what I’d be doing, I love a Hop on, Hop off bus in new cities. Castle visits, German Beer tasting and day trips to nearby towns are among the many other things to do in the historical city of Frankfurt.
I’ve convinced myself to head off to Frankfurt now! Who fancies a half day on Friday?
FRANKFURT FUN FACTS:
How much do you really know about Frankfurt?
• Did you know there are two Frankfurts? Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt an der Oder. The Main and the Oder refer to the rivers that surround each of the cities. Frankfurt am Main is the biggest city, which is steeped in history. The Römerberg is the historic town centre, named after the city’s town hall. The main river flows through the heart of the city which divides it in two. Frankfurt an der Oder is a small town near the Polish border with a population of just over 60,000.
• People in Frankfurt enjoy some of the highest quality of life in world. That’s according to numerous studies. The happiness level is said to be 7.3 / 10.
• It’s the financial capital of the EU and is considered one of Europe’s leading financial centres. There are more banks per capita in Frankfurt than any other major city in Europe. The European Central Bank is located there.
• It’s home to the largest book fair in the world. A five-day event which takes place in mid-October at the Frankfurt Trade Fair Grounds. On average almost 300,000 people attend every year.
• 17/18 of Germany’s skyscrapers are in Frankfurt.
Four Esquires Productions staged four original short plays at Courtney’s Bar.
The event featured work by four different writers who teamed up to bring their scripts to the stage in a pub setting.
The lineup included:
The Fag: A sharp look at the tensions and conversations that unfold in a smoking area.
Sam Who?: A Garda investigation into a missing cup takes a wild turn inside a hotel room.
The Black Bench: A park bench be-
comes the setting for an unexpected and meaningful encounter.
Swiping and Punching:A story exploring the ups and downs of modern online dating in Ireland.
Crowds showed strong support over the three nights, with many locals and pubgoers staying on to watch the performances.
What started as a casual drink for some turned into an evening of live storytelling. The turnout and feedback caught the cast and crew by surprise and showed clear interest in more grassroots theatre in the town.

The rock stood tall and strong
Along the shore of life
Weathering hardships sent by the world
The trouble and the strife.
It protected the smaller structures
That nestled by it’s side
Despite storms of physical depletion
Brought in by the tide.
Waves of worry chipped away the surface
But the inner strength shone through A monument of pride and independence
That rock dear Helen was you.
Your love is irreplaceable
Your sense of humour was unique
You make us laugh, still to this day
With the remarks you used to speak.
The winds of change blew fiercely
And took you far away
But now you live in paradise
Where we’ll meet again one day.

It’s then I miss you most of all.
Always remembered by your loving daughter Sheila and Connie.
Fondest memories every day of our dear father Con Guerin late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney who sadly left us on 26th July 1989.
Also remembering his wife Kathy who sadly left us on 21st October 2005 and their beloved sons, our beloved brothers Cornelius (Con) and Denis who sadly departed from us on 22nd September 2014 & 20th February 2025.
“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose”.
(Written by Thomas Moore 1808)
Always thinking of you, your children Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, and all their families.

ALL-IRELAND FOOTBALL SEMI-FINAL
Kerry v Meath
Saturday 5.15pm
O’Connor Park, Tullamore Live on TG4
The Kerry ladies will be bidding to qualify for their fourth All-Ireland final in a row when they take on Meath in Tullamore on Saturday.
The reigning All-Ireland champions have been steady and professional through-
out their 2025 campaign to date and it will take another strong performance to overcome the challenge of the Royals, a team with whom they are very familiar.
Led by the formidable Vikki Wall, Meath defeated the Kingdom in the 2022 All-Ireland final, securing back-to-back titles in the process. Kerry began to turn the tide in 2023, beating their Leinster rivals in the quarters before eventually coming up short against Dublin in the decider.
They overcame Meath again at the quarter-final stage last season, a result which was followed up by victory over

Armagh in the semis and an unforgettable triumph over Galway in the Croke Park finale.
The overhaul Kerry have had to deal with – both on the pitch and on the sideline – has been well documented by this stage, but the core of the team remains strong, undoubtedly bolstered by the return of Emma Costello at centre back.
The Firies woman been excellent since rejoining the set-up. In fact, she was Laoch na hImeartha in her side’s quarter-final win over Kildare a fortnight ago.

3-12 to 0-11 points with goal machine Síofra O’Shea bagging a hat-trick.
As for Meath, they saw off the challenge of Tipperary with little fuss. Wall was amongst the goals as they romped to a 2-17 to 1-6 win. Niamh Gallogly scored 1-3 while Marion Farrelly added 0-4 from midfield.
The other All-Ireland semi-final, which will be contested by Dublin and last year’s beaten finalists Galway, will also be played in Tullamore on Saturday with the ball being thrown in at 7.30pm. Both matches will be live on TG4.
ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL
Kerry 1 - 20 | Tyrone 0 - 17
CROKE PARK
Kerry booked their place in Sunday week’s All-Ireland final with a mature and professional victory over Tyrone at HQ on Saturday.
The Kingdom were slow enough to get started, particularly around breaking ball, which allowing the Ulster side to race into a four-point lead via scores by Ciarán Daly (two), Darragh Canavan and Kieran McGeary.
Their middle third scavengers came to the fore thereafter, however, as they began to grab the dropping ball from Mark O’Shea and Seán O’Brien’s aerial duels with Brian Kennedy and Conn Kilpatrick. Kerry eventually got back to level terms when David Clifford gathered bouncing ball on the slide, popped back to his feet, fended off Pádraig Hampsey, and swung over a massive two-pointer into the Canal End.
The Fossa man tapped over a free to give Kerry the lead before Mattie Donnelly and Canavan responded to make it Tyrone 0-9 Kerry 0-8 in the 28th minute.
Then came the key moment of the first half. Mike Breen carried the ball deep into Tyrone territory, Clifford executed a trademark back door cut, and Breen fed a perfectly weighted hand pass into the danger zone. Kerry’s number 13 gathered, dodged the covering Tyrone defender and the advancing Niall Morgan with a dummy hop, and slotted home with his right foot to give Kerry a twopoint lead.
Graham O’Sullivan followed up with a close-in point seconds later and Kerry could have gone in at the break in total command had Morgan not denied Seán O’Brien from close range. (It was one of
nine missed goal opportunities for the Kingdom.)
As it was, the gap at half-time was three points (Kerry 1-9 Tyrone 0-9).
Tyrone started the second half like they started the first and a single and a double by Canavan, either side of a Clifford free, made it a one-point game.
But Kerry slipped into overdrive between the 43rd and 63rd minutes, rattling off nine without reply to open up an unassailable 10-point lead. Joe O’Connor was excellent all day but he was immense during this period, although he may be a little disappointed that at least one of his shots that went over the bar didn’t end up in the back of the net.
Substitute Killian Spillane also popped over a pair of scores in this unbroken run, with Paudie Clifford and Seánie O’Shea also finding the target. All told it was another satisfying win that was greatly enjoyed by the boisterous Kerry supporters in Croke Park. Next up is an even greater chal-
lenge: Jim McGuinness and Donegal await in a tantalising All-Ireland final.
KERRY: Shane Ryan; Paul Murphy, Jason Foley, Dylan Casey; Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Mike Breen, Gavin White; Mark O’Shea, Seán O’Brien; Joe O’Connor 0-2, Seánie O’Shea 0-3 (2f), Graham O’Sullivan 0-1; David Clifford 1-9 (1 x 2pt, 4f), Paudie Clifford 0-2, Dylan Geaney 0-1.
Subs: Killian Spillane 0-2 for Geaney, Evan Looney for Casey, Tadhg Morley for Breen, Micheál Burns for O’Brien, Tony Brosnan for P Clifford.
TYRONE: Niall Morgan; Cormac Quinn, Niall Devlin, Pádraig Hampsey; Peter Teague, Ben McDonnell, Kieran McGeary 0-1; Brian Kennedy, Conn Kilpatrick; Seánie O’Donnell 0-2, Mattie Donnelly 0-2, Ciarán Daly 0-2; Darren McCurry, Eoin McElholm 0-1, Darragh Canavan 0-7 (1 x 2pt, 2f).
Subs: Michael McKernan for McDonnell, Mark Bradley for McCurry, Peter Harte for Daly, Ruairi Canavan for McElholm, Michael O’Neill for O’Donnell.
Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on an All-Ireland semi-final weekend that saw both favourites advance unscathed
It’s silverware time at Croker as we reach the end of what I believe is a too condensed race for the Liam MacCarthy and the Sam Maguire.
The all-green and gold football final will be centre stage on Sunday, July 27 after Kerry and Donegal had clear-cut wins in their semi-finals last weekend. Closer to the big day we’ll offer an opinion on where Sam will reside for the next year. When predicting the outcome of Kerry v Tyrone for last week’s edition, I wrote that Tyrone would have to score goals to defeat Kerry as Kerry have the better forwards and would score more freely. That they did with King David from Fossa devastating the Red Hand of Ulster with the same panache as the biblical hero who outsmarted Goliath. He only scored 1-9, that’s 60 % of Kerry’s total score, and it could even have been more. Still, some score from one man. He was unmarkable despite the close attention of the designated marker Pádraig Hampsey, who had the luxury of various other Tyrone defenders for backup. It made little impact as the imperious younger Clifford broke the hearts of Tyrone. He's skilful, big, almighty strong and driven with renewed spirit. Notice his body language after each score.
In the quarter-final, Seán O’Shea deserved the kudos, especially in the first half, prompting Jack O’Connor to say that Kerry is not a one-man team. Technically correct, but you have one special one who delivers on the scoreboard despite all the close marking. Statistics may sound boring but with them you are dealing with facts and not just opinions. In the 2025 championship to date, Clifford is the top scorer with a total of eight goals and 53 points in eight starts. Robert Finnerty of Galway is second with 3-40, also from eight starts. And Seán O’Shea is down the list. After six starts and one appearance as a sub, his total is 1-44.
In general play David Clifford is still the clear leader with eight goals and 41 points. Seán O’Shea has scored 1-20 from play. However, for King of the Arc
title, O’Shea and Clifford are level on 11 two-pointers each.
QED. David Clifford is Kerry’s prolific scorer, and no one comes near his tally. Put it another way. If Donegal can confine Clifford to three or four points, they will win the Sam Maguire. For Kerry to win, David Clifford must score 1-5 at least. Enough of stats. How in the name of God was he not awarded Man of the Match? Not that he needs any more sparkling glass. There is a limit to the number of glass awards any shelf can take. Joe O’Connor had a great second half in particular, and got stuck in to great effect, yet he only scored two points. Kerry should have capitalised on at least five great goal opportunities. A 20% return is poor. Donegal were not as profligate, scoring three goals against an outplayed Meath. Credit the Kerry defence. Shane Ryan stopped a goalbound Darren McCurry blaster, and captain Gavin White prevented another ‘certain’ second half goal when he covered for a missing fellow defender and turbocharged as he can to whip in and sweep the ball clear when Tyrone needed a goal to stop Kerry's momentum. For once, Paul Murphy found Darragh Canavan more than a handful.
Canavan scored seven points, including two frees and one two-pointer. Shades of Dad, Peter,
who was also a delightful, fast, intelligent and free-scoring forward. Darragh was Tyrone’s top scorer. Any weaknesses that appeared on Saturday last will be worked on in the preparations for the final. Kerry’s kickouts were robbed too often. Back to my point of the broken ball, especially from the kickouts. Kerry lost most of them in the first half. In fairness to Graham O’Sullivan, he made a great effort to win dirty ball but have Kerry a Paul Galvin type of player ferreting out manna from heaven? It will be there again in the final, to be hoovered by whom?

LIAM MACCARTHY CUP
Cork and Tipp will meet in the All-Ireland SHC final at Croke Park on Sunday, July 20 for the very first time.
Of course, they are age-old rivals in Munster as we recall the days of ‘the hay saved and Cork bate’. Mostly silage now and neither Cork nor Tipperary have been making hay in the MacCarthy Cup, spending too many years out of contention.
Cork should win on Sunday, especially after their demolition of Dublin in the semi-final on a scoreline of 7-26 to 2-21. The Rebels were robbed of at least a draw by a referee who made a very poor call in the dying moments of last year’s final, and they are hell bent on bringing Liam

back to the Banks this weekend.
I spoke with a man who knows how Cork won the 1990 final. Ted Owens trained that winning team for manager JBM, the great Jimmy Barry Murphy. Are you very confident, Ted? “Confident, yes, but very cautious like ye Kerry fans when asked if ye will win the Sam Maguire,” said the softly spoken Glen Corkonian.
“Tipp v Cork are always big contests, and Cork may feel so disappointed with last year’s loss. They will want to win on Sunday. Also, Tipp have the added spur to get retribution for the McCarthy sending off almost from the throw-in in their last meeting. Cork are the most experienced, and that should count.” Apart from Tipperary, I‘m sure the whole country would wish for a Cork victory, especially for their great veteran Hoggy (Patrick Horgan), the 37-yearold doyen of The Glen (Rovers). He is a
four-time All-Star but he is still without the coveted Celtic Cross.
I expect him to get the medal he deserves on Sunday. “Fair play to you, boy,” as that great Cork folk singer John Spillane says so often at his gigs. I expect a Cork win.
Kerry FC have been on a losing run in the LOI in recent weeks, so Colin Healy will have a big ask of his players this Friday evening when they meet Athlone Town in the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup clash in Mounthawk Park.
It is a tough tie, but with big home support, they can advance to the next round of the cup and bounce back from their 3-1 loss to Longford Town last week. Robbie Cleary, a new signing for Kerry FC, scored their only goal.
In faraway Brisbane, the 1st Test game for the touring Lions will be of great interest this time because of the huge part Ireland will play. That game will kick of at 7.30pm AEST. That is 10.30am tomorrow morning Irish time. Will manager Andy Farrell and Ireland be expected to have the lion’s share of the starting 15 of the Lions 2025 Test team? In last week’s issue, rugby pundit Jack McGowan picked his ideal team for the Test 1 game tomorrow.
earnings for a female sporting event in MSG history.
The Lions Tour 2025 is a far cry from the Lions tours in Tom Kiernan's time whn we saw the games courtesy of flickering Pathe News Reels in our local cinemas.
The Tour is projected to earn an overall profit of £12 million and £3-4 million will go to the Australian Rugby Union.
The players and supporting staff will be paid for the first time £100,000 each.
The balance will be divided between the four Home Unions.
KATIE TAYLOR
Talking of big bucks, Katie Taylor beat Amanda Serrano for the third consecutive time at an all-women’s boxing programme in Madison Square Garden.
A sold-out crowd of 19,721 people generated a $2.63million gatethe highest gate ever for a women’s boxing card and the highest
It also had a massive streaming audience on Netflix. It topped the charts in Ireland, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, and was in the top 10 in 43 countries. It registered an estimated average minute audience (AMA) of nearly six million viewers worldwide.
In the post-fight interview, Katie said: “I don’t know (what the future holds), but I’m not fighting Amanda again, she hits too hard. I thought I boxed very well and very smart tonight, she didn’t catch me as much as she did in the first two fights, and I’m delighted with the performance.”
And then a hint of the possibility of a grand finale in Croker for a big purse. She was asked if she’d fight in Dublin again. “Maybe Croke Park?” Hint, hint. Money will talk, or will Croke Park play hard ball with the promoter?
Any weaknesses that appeared on Saturday last will be worked on in the preparations for the final.
Experienced Utility Trust St Paul’s player Lorraine Scanlon is one of four uncapped players included in James Weldon’s Ireland squad for the Jysk Summer Series against Norway at the National Basketball Arena on Saturday, July 26.
32-year-old Scanlon has been rewarded with a call-up for her role in helping Paul’s reach last season’s Super League Final. It has been a remarkable 12 months for the Castleisland woman who was also part of the Kerry ladies’ football team who won the 2024 All-Ireland.
Lucy Coogan, Erin Maguire and Maria Kealy from Donegal have also been added to the squad for the first time. Elsewhere there’s a recall for Annaliese
Murphy and Enya Maguire who missed out on the EuroBasket qualifier against Latvia at the National Basketball Arena.
Edel Thornton will captain the side as she continues her return from an ACL injury.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back in camp with this group,” head coach Weldon said. “The Jysk Summer Series gives me a good chance to look at Lucy, Maria, Erin and Lorraine – as well as others – against strong opponents in Norway.
“It’s always great to introduce some new faces to the group and the energy that brings, and with the draw for the next qualification campaign coming up later this month, these are really important games to set the tone for the coming months.”
INTERNATIONAL: St Paul's star Lorraine Scanlon will join up with the Irish squad for the Jysk Summer Series.
The Kerry U16 girls’ team were victorious in the All-Ireland ‘A’ final in Nenagh on Wednesday evening as they overcame Mayo on a scoreline of 4-17 to 0-5.
Lily Riordan, Kelsey Cummins, Leah Griffin and Julie O’Connor were amongst the goals for the Kingdom while Jessie Lynch added 0-7 in a fairly one-sided game that was effectively decided in the first half.

U16 BOYS: Our U16 Boys Team faced our local rivals Dr Crokes in Lewis Road in our third game of the Division 1 of the County League on Thursday. On a warm evening a good goal by Dara Horan mid-way through the first half opened a gap between the teams and we led by 6 points at half time 1-9 to 0-6. The teams traded points throughout the second half and at full time we emerged with a good win to keep us in the hunt for a place in the Div 1 semi-finals. Thanks to Dr Crokes for a fine game and to Brendan Brosnan for excellent officiating. Our final two group games are against John Mitchels and Listry. Final Score Killarney Legion 1-15 Dr Crokes 1-12.
MINOR BOYS: Legion took a trip to Killorglin to face the team that comprehensively beat them in the Club Championship earlier in the year. Although missing a few regulars this week the team were buoyed by their second half performance against Austin Stacks last week. Starting well they raised the first white flags in a tight first half and on another night their penetration in the Laune Rangers final third would have led to at least 3 goals, which their keeper kept out in one-on-one situations. The hosts on the other hand were content to work points against a dogged defence and led at the interval by 0-8 to 0-4. A good start to the second half yielded the first points but a Laune Rangers goal restored their advantage,
but Legion fought back When Brian O’Shea netted, we were back in the match and underlining this was a second Legion goal which drew the sides level with 5 minutes to go. Laune Rangers then got a goal somewhat against the run of play and although pressing strongly we couldn't force the turnover to bring about a final goal chance and Rangers pointed well at the death. All in all, there was a massive improvement on our last outing against Laune Rangers, but it was a game we could have easily won. The final group game is against South Kerry amalgamation Na Fianna next week. Final score Laune Rangers 2-13 Killarney Legion 2-9.
ALL-IRELAND FINALS: A successful weekend for two of our members. Darragh Lyne is part of the Kerry squad which has qualified for its third All Ireland final in four years following their semi-final success over Tyrone. While Aine Devlin is a member of the Kerry Camogie team that has made it all the way to the All-Ireland Intermediate Final. We obviously wish both well in their respective showpiece events.
SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies had a comfortable win over Castlegregory/ Annascaul in the opening round of the Corrib Oil league. The game was notable for the return of Elizabeth Mohan to the side after a couple of years' absence. Kerins O’Rahillys lie in wait in the next round.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP: There was great drama in Tralee on Tuesday evening as the East Kerry U14s, helped by our own Rian Brosnan, Robert Murphy, Cian Whitty, Patrick MacSweeney, Kieran Moloney & Cillian Healy defeated Tralee district in the County District A final on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-8.
LGFA DEVELOPMENT SQUADS: Well done to Laura Healy, who starred for the Kerry Ladies u17 Development team during the week in the National Development Blitz held in Portlaoise. They won their 4 games against Kildare, Monaghan and Meath (twice).
LOTTO: Monday July 7th. Numbers were 12, 20, 21, 27. Bonus No 5. No Jackpot winner. Match 3s / Lucky Dips. Bernie Cronin. Ann McCarthy. Steve Dennehy.
CORRIB OIL SENIOR CLUB LEAGUE: Spa Ladies welcomed Clounmacon/ Moyvane on this wet and windy Monday evening for the second round of the Corrib Oil Senior Club League. It was a good start by Spa opening the scoreboard with two fine points, but Clounmacon/Moyvane answered back and kept it a very close contest until a miss communication between the backs and Spa goalie gave the visitors a very soft goal. Spa regathered themselves brilliantly and were rewarded with a goal themselves soon afterwards, so the sides were level going
into half time with 1-05 apiece. The second half continued to be very exciting and competitive despite the poor weather conditions with strong defensive play from both sides accompanied by skilful turnovers by both teams. Unfortunately for Spa though the visitors narrowly just held out winning by just two points. The final score was 1-09 to 1-07 to Clounmacon/Moyvane. The Spa ladies are consistently putting out great performances and contesting in very close matches and no doubt their next game will be just as exciting when they travel to Abbeydorney on Monday 21st, throw in is 7:30pm.
ALL-IRELAND TICKETS: Spa GAA members wishing to be included in All Ireland ticket draw must be over 16 and have been members before 31st March 2025 to be eligible. MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Fossa were away to Kilcummin in the opening round of the county league on Tuesday evening. Fossa had the first two scores of the game from Harry O’Connor and Dylan O’Meara before Kilcummin hit three without reply. Fossa had lots of possession early on but couldn’t convert it into scores which would prove crucial in the end. Karl James O’Neill kicked a fine point, but Kilcummin struck for a goal in the 20th minute to put them six points ahead, however Sam Clerkin replied with a goal in the 25th minute to bring Fossa back into the game. Further scores from Harry O’Connor and Karl James O’Neill left the half time score Kilcummin 1-11, Fossa 1-06. Fossa started the second half very well and had drawn level by the 10th minute through scores from Shay McCormick, Karl James and a brace from Dylan O’Meara. They continued to put pressure on the home side with Jack Hallissey and Jack Spillane keeping a tight rein on the Kilcummin attack, Dara Whelton pulled off a fine save to deny them a goal. Scores from Shay McCormick, David Butler and a fine individual effort from Jack Hallissey left Fossa ahead by three with 10 minutes left. Kilcummin finished the half very strongly though and kicked six points without reply, Fossa to their credit never gave up and Fionn Doyle had a goal bound shot cleared off the line right at the death to leave Kilcummin victors on a score of 1-18 to 1-15. It was a very entertaining game, and it was this team’s first competitive match after a long break which probably showed towards the end. They are away to Annascaul/Lispole next Monday evening in the next round. Team: Dara Whelton, Jack Spillane, Jack Hallissey 0-1, Derek O’Gorman, Conor O’Mahony, Fionn Doyle, Ryan Brady, David Butler 0-1, Mark Kennelly, Shay McCormick 0-2, Dylan O’Meara 0-7, Cathal Breen, Sam Clerkin 1-0, Karl James O’Neill 0-2, Harry O’Connor 0-2, Charlie Griffin, Eoin Bennett, Paddy Myers.
SENIOR LADIES: No luck for our Senior Ladies in the Corrib Oil Senior Club League v Firies. A makeshift team of the bare 13 took to the field and from the start we were well in the game, and we went in at half time up 1-04 to 0-04. However, Firies were very competitive throughout and took control early in the 2nd half. In a close fought contest which could have gone either way the well-resourced Firies bench had the impact and our tiring 13 lost out to a solitary late point 1-10 v 1-1. Well done to all who turned out to allow us to fulfil the fixture, a very nice start to a busy July and up in Rd 2 on Monday evening next is Kilcummin.
CONGRATS: Congratulations to East
Kerry U14 team who had a brilliant win in the County Championship Final vs Tralee District in Austin Stack Park. Fossa boys involved were Gerry Moroney, Captain, Johnny Myers, Charlie O’Meara, Shay Driver, Ross Cronin and Cian Riordan. Congratulations also to Fossa’s James O’Shea, Mairtin Driver and Sinead Myers who are involved in the management.
ALL-IRELAND FINAL TICKETS: If you are interested in being included in the draw for All Ireland Tickets, please text or WhatsApp Nessa on 087 2897312 before Friday, July 18th, at 5 pm. No exceptions for ticket requests will be made outside of this date and time. Only fully paid-up members will be included in the draw. Thank you.
JUNIORS: In the East Kerry Junior League, it was a defeat for Kilcummin at the hands of Dr. Crokes, who finished 4-13 to 2-10 winners at Lewis Road.
MINORS: Well done to the minor footballers who enjoyed a fine 1-18 to 1-15 win over Fossa on Tuesday evening in their Minor County Football League Division 4A opener.
UNDER 16A: It was a busy yet fruitful week for our Under-16 A team, who went to the top of the Division 1 County football league with 2 wins in the space of a few days. On Thursday evening they bettered Laune Rangers 2-12 to 1-6 in Killorglin, and on Sunday evening at John Mitchels they secured another win, 2-17 to 1-15 over the Tralee side.
UNDER 16B: It was a defeat for our under-16B side on Tuesday evening when they narrowly lost out to Ballymacelligott 3-7 to 3-5 despite an encouraging and at times impressive display. Firsthalf goals by Tomas O’Sullivan and Eamon O’Donoghue saw Kilcummin lead at the break. A purple patch by the home side and some great goalkeeping kept Kilcummin at bay despite a late Daniel O’Sullivan goal setting up a tense finish.
LADIES: In Division 5 of the Corrib Oil senior ladies club football league, it was a defeat for our Senior Ladies who lost against Ballymac on a score of 1-9 to 1-11. IRISH ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Last weekend saw 28 Muckross crews competing in the Irish Rowing Championships at the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork. Over 900 crews descended on the NRC for three days of top racing with an incredibly high standard of strength, fitness and technical excellence on display. Our crews put in tremendous effort in a culmination of training over several months since last Autumn and for older crews especially, building upon their previous years. The race format saw most categories filtered through an initial series of time trials, whittling down the field of crews to between 12 and 18 in each category for the heats. Each heat then resulted in the top 2-3 crews progressing to the final ensuring an exceptional standard in the last races for Championships silverware. With representation in 11 categories, Muckross RC had four crews racing in finals to make the top 6 nationally. The highlight of the weekend was the bronze medal win in the Women’s Junior Double, congratulations to Khim Fleming and Rachel Fuller. Well done also to Aisling Coffey and Aine O’Sullivan, who qualified from the heats of the Women’s Intermediate Double and reached fourth place in the final. Our Men’s Junior squad put in a strong performance also, with the Men’s Junior Double of Ronan Fahy and Cian Scannell recording a fifth-place finish in their final. There was another top five finish for Muckross A in the Men’s Junior Quad, where Ronan and Cian were joined by Cillian Leslie and Diarmuid Moynihan. Well done to all our rowers, coxes, coaches and all involved in supporting our crews to the top event in Irish rowing.
