Dr Crokes granted planning permission for new facilities
building, featuring a flat roof, showers, and bathroom facilities.
The coffee kiosk will be a 14 square meter structure and will replace the existing coffee trailer at the club grounds.

The permission allows for the addition of two new changing rooms and a coffee kiosk at the rear of the existing clubhouse. The interconnected changing rooms will be housed in a 108.35 square meter
These new changing rooms are intended for the club’s ladies teams, including the Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others side, which experienced an increase in playing numbers last year.
The club currently operates with four changing rooms, arranged as two interconnected pairs. The new facilities will
provide dedicated space for the expanding ladies' section.
While permission has been granted, there are no immediate plans to begin construction. The club indicated that development will proceed once the necessary finances are secured.

Over seventy vacant state properties highlighted in Dáil by Kerry TD
The issue of abandoned state-owned properties in Killarney has become a national concern following questioning by Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly in Dáil Éireann.
Deputy Daly has criticised the government's approach to vacant properties across the country, including those in Killarney.
High-profile buildings in Killarney that currently lie vacant, and that could be used for housing and other purposes, include St Finian's Hospital, Áras Phádraig, and the old Pretty Polly site.
Additionally, the current community hospital and St. Columbanus nursing home are expected to become vacant once the new hospital on the bypass road becomes operational.
Figures released to Deputy Daly in response to a Parliamentary Question revealed that over 70 properties owned
by the Office of Public Works (OPW) are empty nationwide.
Teachta Daly said: “The fact that the OPW is sitting on a property portfolio of this magnitude in the middle of a housing crisis is absolutely scandalous. It is a damning indictment of this government’s attitude to public resources.”
He highlighted that many of these properties have been idle for decades, with one example cited as empty since 1974.
Despite claims that some are being prepared for social housing, Daly noted that a 40-year turnaround is unacceptable given record homelessness figures.
An FOI also revealed 750 council houses nationwide have been idle for over a
Vacant properties to be discussed at next Kerry County Council Meeting
Concerns regarding vacant stateowned properties in Killarney are set to be addressed at the next Ordinary Meeting of Kerry County Council.
The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber, Tralee, on Monday. Councillors will seek updates from the council on these ongoing issues.
Specifically, Cllr Brendan Cronin will question HSE Management on providing "clear clarification regarding strategic buildings and lands in their control
particularly in relation to repeated requests from Killarney MD members on HSE property usage in Killarney before the upcoming vote on the Áras Phádraig/Primary Care proposal in Lewis Road."
Additionally, Cllr. Maura Healy-Rae will ask Kerry County Council to "provide an update on the redevelopment of the Sara Lee / Pretty Polly site, Killarney into a college for hospitality and tourism."
year, with Kerry having the longest turnaround times on the island.
Daly also pointed out that the issue extends beyond housing, with over 20 Garda stations empty for more than a decade, and many schools in need of new premises.
In protest of this ongoing neglect, Sinn Féin is organizing public demonstrations: on June 17 at 6pm outside Leinster House in Dublin, and on June 21 at 2pm at the National Monument in Cork.
The party is urging the public to join these protests to hold the government accountable.

HSE committed to Primary Care Facility at Áras Phádraig
The HSE South West has confirmed its full commitment to providing a primary care facility at the existing Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road.
At a recent HSE South West forum, Labour councillor Marie Moloney raised concerns, stating: "A lot of people believe it is the wrong place. The public don’t understand why the HSE, with so much land, would need the site for a primary care centre.”
In a written reply, the HSE responded that both HSE and Kerry County Council officials "are of the opinion that the provision of the theatre and a primary care facility on the same site in an urban setting will be complementary to each development from a planning and sustainability view point."
Bypass progress debated in Dáil last night
The N22 Killarney Farranfore Road Project, designed to bypass the towns of Farranfore and Killarney and deliver an improved road between the two locations, continues to be a subject of concern.
This infrastructure project, a partnership between Kerry County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the Department of Transport, was first
proposed in 1995. Development began in 2003 and saw significant progress until its suspension in 2012 due to the financial crisis.
Public representatives have consistently advocated for the project's advancement, criticizing the ongoing delays. They argue that the people of Kerry deserve better progress on this vital infrastructural development.

BREAKING: Killarney Community Hospital now delayed to year-end
Just as the Killarney Advertiser was closing for press on Thursday evening, it was confirmed that the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit is not expected to open until the end of 2025, a year after its initial projected opening date.
Concerns regarding this delay were raised by Labour councillor Marie Moloney at a Regional Health Forum meeting this week.
Councillor Moloney also questioned the future of the existing Killarney Community Hospital. She previously stated: "That following the transfer of patients from Killarney Community Hospital to the new facility that the HSE would invest serious funding in refurbishing the Community Hospital to provide much needed respite services for the people of Kerry. Many people who are caring
for their loved ones with a disability at home cannot access respite services due to severe shortage of such facilities in Kerry.”
COMPLETION DATE
In response, Julie O'Neill, Integrated Healthcare Manager Kerry HSE South West, provided an update: "Construction of the new Community Nursing Unit in Killarney is substantially completed but we await a final completion date from the PPP Company and HSE National Estates. Based on the information available to the Older Persons Service Management Team from our Estates colleagues it is estimated that the completion date is likely to be during Q3 2025."
O'Neill further clarified the timeline for the new facility becoming operational: "The timeline for when the building is expected to become operational is

dependent on handover of the new building by the PPP Company and subsequent registration by management at the unit. Registration cannot be applied for until full handover of the completed building has taken place. We anticipate that the time frame from submission of the application to inspection by HIQA will be approximately six weeks."
PHASED TRANSFER
Once officially registered, a phased transfer of residents from St. Columbanus and Killarney Community Hospital into the new unit is envisaged. The HSE also outlined plans for the existing campus: "As the members will be aware, the new Minor Injury Unit which is planned for the Kerry area will be located in the grounds of the St Columbanus Home / Killarney Community Hospital campus. The space requirements and needs of the services in the Kerry area
are currently being reviewed by HSE Estates in conjunction with service management and Public Health. We await the outcome of this review and it will inform any decision on the future use of the remaining available space on the Killarney Community Hospital / St. Columbanus campus.”
CONSTRUCTION DELAYS
Work on the new 130-bed unit in Ballydribbeen began in 2022, with an initial expectation of opening in the last quarter of last year.
However, construction is now anticipated to be completed in the third quarter, with the HSE expecting the unit to be transferred over in the last quarter of 2025. Councillor Moloney's concerns suggest that the unit may not be open for patients this year due to the numerous processes remaining after construction.

Special night of dance and music at Muckross House
The end result of two remarkable legacy projects, undertaken to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Killarney’s Muckross House to the public, will be unveiled at a very special event on Saturday, June 14, at 7.30pm.
As part of the diamond anniversary celebrations, two hugely significant projects were initiated by the Muckross House Research Library to reflect on the history of the landmark attraction in Killarney National Park.
The first focused on the development of traditional Irish dance which involved revisiting the traditional dance styles of North Kerry, including the enormous
contribution of legendary dance teacher Jeremiah Molyneaux (1881-1965)
Between 1983 and 1985, Dr Catherine Foley, Emeritus Associate Professor with the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the University of Limerick, was tasked by the Trustees of Muckross House to record this important and fascinating dance legacy.
Building on that earlier work, last year she again agreed to revisit the area to determine how the dance tradition had evolved over the intervening four decades.
The project would not have been such a success without valuable contributions from respected authorities like Fr Pat Ahern, Patricia Hanafin and Justin Walsh.
The second initiative was the commissioning of a musical suite tracing the story of Muckross House, from its completion in 1843 up to its opening to the public in 1964.
The story unfolds through the medium of different musical styles and it was composed by award-winning producer JJ O’Shea, who has worked closely with the Muckross House Research Library on a number of projects.
Both projects will be showcased at a free concert in Muckross House on Saturday, June 14 – the same date that the historic building was first opened to the public in 1964.
The concert will commence with a selection of tunes from the Muckross House Music Collection performed by Mary
Mitchell and Karl Nesbitt, followed by a selection of reels, hornpipes and jigs in the true North Kerry tradition.
Featured dancers will include five-time world dance champion David Geaney, Jimmy Hickey, Mossie Walsh and Jonathan Kelliher.
The Muckross Suite project will then be the centre of attention as the story of Killarney’s most historic and important building is told through music composed by JJ O’Shea and delivered by Paul de Grae on guitar and keyboard and harpist Reidun Schlesinger, and they will be accompanied by Barry Lynch on uilleann pipes and Seán Abeyta on fiddle. Admission to the concert is free of charge but advance bookings are essential on 064-6670162.

From Sydney to Kerry: Is the grass always greener?
By Clodagh
These days it seems as though every young person is emigrating from Ireland. I should know, I was an expat myself until last week. I, however, am one of those who have recently returned home. Moving back after almost three years abroad is quite daunting. But it has brought the same rush of excitement I felt when I first left: the thrill of the unknown. In 2022 I made the biggest decision of my life - I moved to Australia. I was 24 years old, fresh out of college and eager to see the world post lockdown. Before boarding the flight to Australia, I truly had no idea what to expect. I knew a little but not much. I was lucky because my best friend moved over 6 months prior so I knew I wouldn’t be completely alone over there. At the time, there wasn’t as much information about moving over as there is now. These days, it seems as though every video I watch on TikTok and Instagram is a guide on how to move to Australia. While that’s a great tool for people, for me it was the unknown that excited me the most. Not knowing what to expect was the thrill. I lived and worked in Sydney for almost three years and enjoyed every moment. The good, the bad, the fun times, the tough days. The sun isn’t always shining, in fact it gets quite cold there during the winter, but it was the best experience of my life. I did a stint out regional in a town around 4 hours from Sydney. That was a highlight for me as I got to interact with Australians and see their way of life. I came back to Sydney and settled into city life easily. I was very lucky that I got a great job with a brilliant construction company (owned by a Killarney man!) However, as the end of my working holiday visa loomed, I realised I had to make
a very hard decision, one that I never thought I’d have to make. Am I staying on the other side of the world, a country where I’ve built a life for myself, or am I going home to the life I left in 2022?
When I first left Ireland, I was so excited about the adventure I was about embark on, the places I’d see, the friends I’d meet and the glorious weather that awaited (or so I thought – did I mention that winter is freezing!!). I never dreamt I’d have such a crucial decisio n to make. It was never something I worried about. I was living in the moment. However, it was a decision that slowly began to loom.
I was lucky that I even had a choice to stay or go, not everybody does. I
wanted to give my decision the proper thought and weight it deserved. It took months. I changed my mind every day. I was constantly asking friends and family their opinions. I knew I had to make the decision by myself, but I was terrified of making the wrong one.
I built a lovely life in Australia. I made great friends, I had a good job, I was happy. But there was always a nagging feeling. I was never completely settled over there. I always had a pull towards home. I booked a trip back to Kerry for Christmas time, and I remember thinking, this trip will decide my future.
I was at home for 5 weeks and I had the best time. I was surrounded by my family, I reconnected with friends, and
I settled back in with complete ease. It was during that time I realised that I was ready to close the Australian chapter of my life and begin a new one at home. Before I boarded the flight back to Sydney, I had already made my decision. I was coming back home. Ultimately, I kept asking myself the same question – where do I see myself in 5 years’ time? 5 – 10 years ago, my answer would have been London or New York, or any busy city with bright lights. My answer now? Home. I think life moves in chapters and I’m a firm believer in what’s for you won’t pass you. And if nothing else, I’ll always be able to say I lived on the other side of the world – not everybody can say that.
Killarney Valley AC Athletes excel at Provincial Championships
Killarney Valley AC had a successful two-day outing at the recent provincial championships in Waterford, with their younger team members securing seven medals. The competition featured a high standard of performance, with thirty athletes from Killarney Valley AC participating. Many personal bests and high placings were recorded by the club's competing members.
Olamide Smith demonstrated strong form, winning the Under 13 long jump with a mark of 4.53m. Smith also earned a bronze medal in the Under 13 80m, finishing in 11.33 seconds. In the Under 11 long jump pairs event, Charlie J Kelliher and James Doody claimed bronze medals.
Further bronze medals were achieved by Lucy Devane in the Under 12 high jump, Kayla O'Sullivan in the 60m with a time of 9.11, and Teagan Lyne in the Under 13 60m hurdles with a time of 10.53.
Finnian Swarbrick also secured a bronze medal in the Under 13 javelin. These medal-winning performances mean that Olamide Smith, Charlie J Kelliher, James Doody, Lucy Devane, Kayla O'Sullivan, Teagan Lyne, and Finnian Swarbrick have now qualified for the All-Ireland National Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Qualification for the national championships represents a significant achievement, marking these athletes as among the top performers in their age categories across the country.
This coming weekend, the club's older teenage athletes will compete in the Munster Championships at Munster Technological University (MTU) in Cork.
The MTU track in Cork is a notable facility, recently upgraded to international standards, making it a significant venue for athletic competition in the Munster region. Over 35 Killarney Valley AC athletes are entered in various disciplines for this event.

Residential Zoned Land Tax latest
The controversial Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT) was introduced in The Finance Act 2021 as part of the Governments ‘Housing For All’ policy.
It is intended to act as a stimulus to introduce residential development on land earmarked by local authorities as suitably serviced and zoned, wholly or partly, for residential purposes. Land which falls within this category will face an annual 3% tax on the market value of the lands at the valuation date. The Revenue Commissioners have this week confirmed that approximately 1,800 returns have been filed to date, with liabilities of almost €40 million paid.
The RZLT has been a contentious issue for Irish landowners with 2025 being the first year in which the charge arises.
The aim of the tax is to prompt residential development by incentivising landowners to activate existing planning permissions, or to engage with planning authorities to seek planning permission in respect of relevant land.
The deadline for submissions of the annual return for 2025 was extended to Friday, May 30, with Revenue saying it saw a notable increase in the number of site owners registering and filing a return in the days leading up to the original deadline.
A spokesperson for Revenue said,
“While the current level of engagement is welcome, site owners are reminded that RZLT is a self-assessed tax and, as such, they are expected to take all reasonable steps to determine whether they have an RZLT liability and, if so, to ensure they meet their pay and file obligations.
“Site owners who meet the conditions for an exemption or deferral from RZLT are reminded that they must still file a return in order to claim the relevant exemption or deferral.”
Surcharges, ranging from 10% to 30% of the annual RZLT liability, apply to late RZLT returns.
The rate of surcharge applicable depends on the length of delay in filing.
11 New Street, Killarney, Co Kerry
Site owners who are liable to RZLT and have not yet filed a return, or have not yet paid their RZLT liability, are being urged to take immediate action.

Jury Duty: What to Know
Jury service is when you are instructed to attend court with other members of the public, so the court can select people to sit on juries for upcoming court cases. Even though you are called for jury service, you may not actually serve on a jury. If you are selected to serve on a jury, you and the other jurors will hear the evidence in the case and then decide if the accused person is guilty of an offence. You have an obligation to attend for jury service if you are called to do so. IS THERE A PAYMENT FOR JURY SERVICE?
You are not paid for jury service and travelling expenses are not allowed. If you are actually serving as a juror, lunch will be provided on the day or days of the trial. If you are self-employed and work alone and your attendance at jury service means you cannot earn a living, you may qualify to
be excused from jury service. You should contact the jury office of the court for more information. If you are signing on for a Jobseeker's payment you will continue to be paid, but you should advise your local social welfare office that you have been called for jury service.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM EMPLOYED?
If you are in employment, your employer must let you attend jury service. Time spent on jury service should be treated as if the employee were actually employed. In other words, if you are in employment and are attending for jury service, you are entitled to be paid while you are away from work. If you have a contract of employment, for example, (temporary workers or contract workers) you are entitled to be paid by your employer while you are on jury service. There should also be no loss of any other employment rights while you serve on a jury. You can request a certificate from the jury office to confirm your attendance at jury service.

Kerry and Meath vying for first place and quarter-final berth
Fifteen of the sixteen teams go into the final round Sam Maguire group games with something to play for and the various permutations are enough to make your head spin.
For Kerry, the picture is crystal clear. Win or draw against Meath in Offaly and they will advance directly to an All-Ireland quarter-final on June 28 or June 29 in Croke Park. Lose and things are far less straightforward.
If Leinster runners-up Meath prevail in O’Connor Park they will steal the top spot in Group 2 and the quarter-final berth that comes with it, forcing the Kingdom into the preliminary quarter-finals in the process. That is somewhere Kerry simply do not want to be. Firstly, and most significantly, this would mean an extra knockout game for Jack O’Connor’s men, potentially against Division 1 opposition.
While such a tie might seem appetising on paper, less appetising
is the prospect of exiting the championship without even getting a day out in the capital.
Even if Kerry were to win such a tie, it would result in games on three consecutive weekends (Meath, the preliminary quarter-final, and the quarter-final).
Meanwhile, the four round robin winners (Armagh plus three others) will be waiting in the quarters with a week’s

recovery in the bank. Is it mere coincidence that the two previous All-Ireland winners under the current format won their group (Dublin in 2023 and Armagh in 2024)? It certainly didn’t do them any harm, we’ll put it that way.
With all that in mind, O’Connor will go with a strong line-up with a view to leading from the front – but if they do manage to build up a lead, don’t be surprised if key players are withdrawn and wrapped in cotton wool. With a number of important squad members already nursing injuries, further setbacks in this department could prove fatal.
Kerry v Meath will not be televised or livestreamed anywhere, but you can follow this journalist’s live updates from Tullamore on Twitter/X. Elsewhere, it’s all to play for in Group
GROUP 2
1 with all teams level on two points apiece. Donegal play Mayo in Hyde Park and Tyrone and Cavan meet in Enniskillen. Both matches are on Sunday at 4pm. In Group 3, Monaghan and Down are in a straight shootout for top spot, while Louth and Clare will battle for third/fourth in Portlaoise. Both games throw-in at 2pm on Sunday.
A heavyweight could fall in Group 4 with Dublin, Galway and Derry all in contention for second and third behind Armagh. Dublin take on Derry in Newry, while Armagh face Galway in Breffni Park. Both of these games are on at 6.30pm on Saturday.
Lastly, in Kerry’s group, the winners of Cork and Roscommon in Portlaoise will see another day in the championship, A draw will suffice for Roscommon.

Brilliant Blues land knockout blow
Killarney Athletic win KO Cup in emphatic fashion
GREYHOUND BAR KO CUP FINAL
Killarney Athletic 6-0 Castleisland
Mounthawk Park
With a squad comprised of a unique blend of the very young and the not very young at all, Killarney Athletic have emerged as the last team standing in this year’s Greyhound Bar KO Cup.
Many observers gave Brendan Moloney’s side a right good chance heading into the final against Castleisland but few could have predicted the scoreline: a six-nil drubbing with two goals apiece by free-scoring youth player Luke Doolan, fellow youngster Oisín O’Sullivan, and veteran striker Shane Lynch.
It is the Blues’ first Kerry cup triumph since 2017 when the club celebrated a historic double. Three members of that team were involved again on Sunday last, namely Lynch, Shane Doolan, and the current captain, Mike Stam O’Donoghue.
Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser in the aftermath of the final, O’Donoghue reflected on what was another long and arduous campaign in the Kerry District League.
“We had a season of highs and lows,” the skipper said. “Prior to Christmas we were on a great run but then we had a dip in the New Year. We exited the Munster and FAI Junior Cups and we lost a few players through injury, one guy emigrated, and Luke Doolan was playing with Ireland. So we were a little bit hamstrung for a while, and it wasn’t aided by the fact that we didn’t play a league game for eight weeks leading up
to those cup games. It’s great to end a turbulent campaign with a piece of silverware.”
The final itself took on a familiar pattern for the Blues in that they had a lot of the ball, but on this occasion they managed to do something they haven’t done all that often: score early. From there, the floodgates opened. O’Sullivan netted the first before Doolan doubled their advantage from the penalty spot. Early in the second half, Doolan grabbed his second, and then O’Sullivan did likewise to make it four. It was plain sailing for the Killarney boys thereafter with Lynch adding a brace off the bench to put the icing on the cake.
O’Donoghue believes his young teammates, some of whom are just now graduating from youth football, have the world at their feet.
“Many of these boys were on their own voyage with the youths this year. That came to an end with defeat in an FAI semi-final, which would be uncharted territory for the club. It bodes well for them and for the Athletic senior team going forward.”
The ever-reliable O’Donoghue was also quick to praise the work being done by team manager Brendan Moloney, the Athletic boy who returned to Kerry following a brilliant playing career in the English Football League with the likes of Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Northampton.
“It’s a testament to his love of soccer and his love of his first club that he’s back and he’s pitching in. I’m sure at times it’s frustrating for somebody who’s coming from such a high level to be dealing with fellas of our ability! But he seems to take it all very well and he gives fantastic guidance and insight, especially to the younger players.”
KILLARNEY ATHLETIC: Caolán Mitchell; Ian Prendergast, Shane Doolan, Michael O’Donoghue, Carlos Perez; Matthew Horgan, Roko Rujevčan, Brían O’Shea; Oisín O’Sullivan, Luke Doolan, Josh Bowler. Subs: Tadhg Doolan, Fionn Daly, Donal Kelliher, Shane Lynch, Dara O’Shea, David Looney, Eoghan Mulvaney.
CELEBRATIONS: Killarney Athletic captain Mike Stam O'Donoghue lifts the cup.
Injuries and venue not ideal but Kerry should win
Eamonn Fitzgerald shares his pre-match thoughts ahead of tomorrow’s the Kingdom’s trip to Offaly
Kerry travel to Tullamore tomorrow for the final round of the All-Ireland group stage. They are already through, but they will still want to beat Meath and top their group, avoiding the extra playoff before entering the quarters.
O'Connor Park is a fine venue but it’s crazy to fix this game for Tullamore which is a three-hour journey from Killarney and four hours for supporters travelling from South Kerry. Meath are just an hour away. Picture this scenario: if the venue chosen was Mallow, one hour from Killarney, there would be a hullabaloo from Meath. Unfortunately, the shoe is on the other foot with the choice of Tullamore more than pinching the feet of loyal Kerry supporters. Some of those had the same journey to Portlaoise on Saturday last for the Kerry v Cavan minor quarter-final.
O'CONNOR PARK IS A FINE VENUE BUT IT’S CRAZY TO FIX THIS GAME FOR TULLAMORE.
Injuries may force his hand elsewhere but Jack O’Connor is pretty sure of numbers 1 to 7. Shane Ryan, my Man of the Match in Cork, even with David Clifford's great scoring, will be in goal.
The Rathmore man saved four seemingly certain Cork goals. The defence is settled enough, although I feel it can be opened easily for goals. Barring further injuries, I expect Beaufort’s Mike Breen to start at number 6. Tiger has been Kerry’s number 6 for several years, but when he was sidelined with injuries, Breen excelled.
Midfield has a limited choice. Joe O’Connor appears to be the only experienced midfielder free of injury, so the successful experiment of playing him at wing forward may be curtailed. Mark O’Shea
grabbed his opportunity in Cork and caught some mighty high balls to stake a solid claim to start. That may be the midfield pairing. Beaufort’s Seán O’Brien and Legion’s Darragh Lyne are also fallback options.
The starting forwards – if all are fully fit – could be the Clifford brothers, Seán O’Shea, Paul Geaney, Mícheál Burns and Graham O’Sullivan. The latter being placed in the forwards is a surprise for me. I have great faith in him as a defender, as he proved in winning the 2022 All-Ireland, but his ability and penchant for scoring are not evident to me. He is a good grafter and will assist, but Kerry need natural score-getters from 10 to 15 in attack. What has he scored in the championship so far?
I look at the challenge for managers of teams under the new rules, and in this case refer to the key points I have made since they have been introduced. By in large, the short kickout is a non-starter,
so the goalkeepers have few options but to go long. Usually they hit for the midfield area, not in the central area but usually to the wings. In this crowded area, clean high fielding is rare enough. Mark O’Shea was the exception in the recent Cork game. Using his expertise from basketball and his club exploits, his fetching was a revelation, and a godsend to traditionalists who still long for the thrills of seeing Mick O’Connell, Jacko Shea, Aeroplane O’Shea et al demonstrate that skill in Gaelic football. From my observations at intercounty and club level games, the area where the kickout lands becomes very crowded, and most of the play develops from punched balls. What is needed is a Paul Galvin type, a small player who can nip in and hoover up spilled ball. He must be brave, smart and fearless. I haven’t seen this in Kerry's tactics and game plan. Nevertheless, Meath are not the force of old, and whatever team Kerry are

Kerry minors advance to meet Mayo in semi All-Ireland Minor Quarter-Final
ALL-IRELAND MINOR QUARTER-FINAL
Kerry 0-14 Cavan 1-9
Portlaoise
This was a searching test for Kerry, and they needed one ahead of the semi-final versus Mayo after going through Munster without any real contest.
They played with a good breeze in the first half and yet only led 0-6 (to Cavan’s 0-5) at half-time. Their shooting was well off, amassing nine wides. That was not a healthy position facing the second-half breeze.
The initiative rested with Cavan, but the Kerry teenagers responded well to dig out a narrow victory. Once again, Ben Kelliher was Kery’s top scorer, shooting five points (three from play). They Kingdom needed Kelliher to shine. Their big stars have been captain Gearóid White (John Mitchels) and Kevin Griffin (St Michael’s Foilmore). Griffin scored 0-3 and White 0-2 but it was Kelliher who caught
the eye.
Kerry can also thank their full back line of Ronan Sheridan, Eoghan Joy and Tadhg Ó Slatara who were superb throughout, particularly in that second half when Cavan really came at them. Listry’s Danny Murphy was another star at right half back.
Full credit to Kerry for holding off the Cavan men, especially when the Breffni Boys struck for a goal in the 44th minute, scored by their corner back Matthew Duffy. Strange isn’t it, but the passage of play under the new rules pays scant respect for backs being back. You certainly don’t expect corner backs to be scoring goals. Cian McConnell, the Cavan goalkeeper, denied what seemed to be a goal by Kerry and then came outfield in the second half to score.
Manager Wayne Quillinan’s half-time
pep talk worked, and even when Cavan reduced the deficit to a single point approaching full time, Kerry refused to buckle. Credit is also due to Kerry substitutes, three of whom scored. The last gasp point by Liam O’Brien from Glenflesk gave them breathing space
KERRY: Ruairí Kennedy; Ronan Sheridan, Eoghan Joy, Tadhg Ó Slatara; Danny Murphy, David Sargent, Marcus Clifford; Maidhc Ó Sé, John Curtin; Mark O’Carroll, Gearóid White, Alex Tuohy; Nick Lacey, Kevin Griffin, Ben Kelliher.
Subs: Tadhg O’Connell for Lacey (41), Pádraig Ó Mainnín for Griffin (48), Liam O’Brien for Kelliher (56), James Kissane for Tuohy (58), Conor McGibney for Clifford (60+3).
O’Leary and O’Shea deliver winning scores
Danielle O’Leary continues to be the go-to person to deliver the winning scores for Kerry LGFA this season as they bid to retain the All-Ireland Brendan Martin Cup.
She was unable to start on Saturday last against Mayo in Tralee but she struck for four points off the bench.
Síofra O’Shea also scored 0-4 as the reigning champions overcame a spirited Mayo at Austin Stack Park in this Group 2 Round 1 encounter.
Kerry had the strong wind behind them in the first half and held a precarious one-point lead, 0-7 to 1-3, at the break.
The introduction of O’Leary at halftime was key as she linked up well with the wonderfully consistent O’Shea, together ensuring the victory for Kerry (0-13 to 1-4).
Kerry are now in pole position in Group 2 ahead of their second and final round robin game against Cork tomorrow (Saturday) at 2.30pm in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Meanwhile, Kerry’s hopes of winning the U14 Gold LGFA All-Ireland final were dashed by Dublin in Thurles on a scoreline of 4-6 to 1-12.
Kerry did well in the first half and held a two-point lead at the interval. However, a flurry of second-half Dublin goals determined the result.
Still, this dedicated Kerry team can be very proud of their progress this season and can hope for plenty of success in the years ahead.
Rebels prevail after thrilling Munster final
Cork won the Titanic battle of the penalties 3-2 after a thrilling Munster hurling final on Saturday last, depriving the all-conquering Limerick of seven provincial titles on the trot.
Kiely’s Treaty side have not gone away, however. I still back them to be in Croker on July 20 to win the MacCarthy Cup. For sheer determination, skill and passion, this beat any other sporting event last weekend. It was all square after extra time, Limerick 2-27 Cork 1-30. The blood and bandages sealed up that awful hurt of the trouncing Limerick inflicted upon them just a few weeks back. They defeated their rivals at their home in the Gaelic Grounds in front of a 45,000 capacity crowd. Tickets were like gold dust. If that had been played in Croke Park – and it couldn’t be – I would expect 70,000 at least.
Well done to both teams, but especially Cork, who came agonisingly close to lift-
ing the MacCarthy Cup in 2024. All I can think of is the famous ‘Hurler’s Prayer’ in which the individual steels himself for the big game. Be it heaven or hell, the hurler played the game, and that is the litmus test.
THE HURLER’S PRAYER
Grant me, O Lord, a hurler’s skill
With strength of arm and speed of limb
Unerring eye for the flying ball
And courage to match whate’er befall
May my stroke be steady, and my aim be true
My actions manly and my misses few
No matter what way the game may go
May I rest in friendship with every foe
When the final whistle for me has blown
And I stand at last before God’s judgment throne
May the great referee, when he calls my name
Say, you hurled like a man; you played the game.

Weldon reappointed as Ireland head coach
Local man James Weldon has been reappointed as Ireland senior women’s head coach for the upcoming FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027 qualifiers, which get underway in November.
His extension was confirmed at a recent meeting of Basketball Ireland’s Elite Performance Committee (EPC), ahead of the qualifying draw in August.
It will be Weldon’s third FIBA Women’s EuroBasket campaign since taking charge in 2018, having steered the side in the 2023 and 2025 qualifiers. He previously led Ireland to silver in the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries in 2021. The Kerry native is also a decorated coach domestically, winning nine national titles with UL Wolves and being named Women’s Super League Coach of the Year on three occasions during his fouryear tenure in Limerick.
Having had to face the third-placed team in FIBA’s World Rankings, France, as well as number 29 Latvia in the most recent FIBA Women’s EuroBasket qualifiers,
Weldon is hopeful that the upcoming draw for the 2027 qualifiers will be a little kinder.
“The previous FIBA Women’s EuroBasket campaign was incredibly challenging to navigate. I’m very excited to find out who our opponents will be for the forthcoming qualifiers and embracing a new format which will give us more time in camp during each window”, Weldon said.
The FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers First Round will see Ireland drawn in a four-team group, with three fixtures this November, followed by three fixtures in February 2026. The FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers
Second Round then begins in November 2026 and concludes in February 2027, with three games in each window.
“We hope we can build on the great team
performance against Latvia last time out, when we came agonisingly close to causing an upset. We have strong squad depth now, having brought in a number of new players over the last couple of years, which should stand us in good stead when we return to competitive action.”
There are no changes to Weldon’s coaching staff, with Basketball Ireland Hall of Famer, Jillian Hayes, UCD Marian head coach Ioannis Liapakis and Team Manager Dolores Geaney all returning for the next two years.
“I’d like to thank my staff and players for their support and the incredible hardworking and talented group of players,” continued Weldon. “I wouldn’t be here without my wife Sharon and my extended family, who I owe a huge debt of gratitude towards for allowing me to continue to undertake this considerable, but exciting, challenge.”
“Finally, I want to acknowledge the Chairperson of the EPC, Professor Deirdre Brennan, the extended committee, Basketball Ireland’s CEO John Feehan and all the professional staff for their ongoing hard work and advice.”
Legion host neighbours at fun-filled blitz for girls
Killarney Legion hosted their third annual U10 Girls’ Football Blitz last Saturday at their club grounds in Derreen. In total seven clubs (Killarney Legion, Dr Crokes, Kilcummin, Spa, Glenflesk, Rathmore and Laune Rangers) took part, fielding 11 nine-a-side teams between them. The club was a hive of activity from early morning in preparation for the big day. A monster bake sale was organised as a fundraiser for the Killarney Legion U15 ladies, who recently won the County Féile D2 title and will now go on to the Regional Féile finals to represent Kerry on June 28. There were lots of bakes and treats available on the day for all in attendance to enjoy.
The weather played its part too in ensuring there were lots of smiles and laughter to accompany the high level of skills on show. Now in its third year, the event, spearheaded by Ladies’ Chairperson Ted Healy and Facilities Chairperson Eamon Maguire, has proven to be a highlight in the calendar for these underage girls and is now eagerly anticipated each year.
“It’s a great, fun day out for everyone involved and a pleasure to host,” said Ted Healy. “A lot of hard work goes into making this event happen and we are delighted to see so many girls enjoying the day.
“We would like to thank all the clubs

The mats were alive with energy on Monday night as Killarney Judo Club hosted a spectacular in-house competition, giving proud parents a front-row seat to witness just how much their children have learned over the past year. From dynamic throws to strategic matchups, the evening was a thrilling celebration of talent, growth, and sportsmanship.
For many of the young judoka it was their very first taste of competition and they rose to the occasion with courage and determination. Others built on a season of impressive achievements, having already taken home gold, silver, and bronze medals from prestigious events like the Munster Open, Galway Open, All-Irelands, and the Interprovincial Team Event.
The action didn’t disappoint. The club’s
clubs come together for a day of fun. We look forward to welcoming them all back again next year.”
youngest competitors showed incredible promise, hinting at a bright competitive future, while older athletes delivered intense, tactical bouts that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Knowing each other's moves inside out, these experienced players dug deep, crafting clever strategies and trading rapid-fire throws — many matches coming down to points and split-second timing. It was judo at its best: skill, spirit, and split-second precision.
Next Monday marks the final class of the term for children’s sessions before they take a well-earned summer break.

SENIOR MEN: No joy for our Senior Men in the Division 1 Derby with our neighbours Dr Crokes in a game played in Fitzgerald Stadium last Friday night. There was never much in the game and so it was that a goal would be crucial. It fell to the Lewis Road outfit who had the benefit of a one-point lead at the final whistle. Final score Killarney Legion 0-13 Dr Crokes 1-11. The Division 6 team found Kenmare Shamrocks a bit too hot on Saturday evening in Direen. Still the games are providing ideal opportunities to our younger players to build up experience.
U10 GIRLS BLITZ: A big thank you to everyone who helped out with last Saturdays blitz and Feile fundraising bake sale. Anyone who helped with baking, to manning the tables, helping with clean up and much more. A special mention goes to Eamon Maguire for helping to lay out the pitches from early morning, setting up tables & chairs, kids play area and the running of the day. Thanks to Sharon O’Shea for all her work running the shop and Shelly Browne for managing the bake sale and the “staff”. And to our refs on the day Justin Healy, Kieran O’Shea, Ian Bowler, James Murphy and Liam O’Toole - we couldn’t have run it without them. Thanks to our club members who helped the man the car park - not an easy job. Finally, to our Feile players who helped out on the day, it was great to see them taking ownership of it.
U12 GIRLS: This week our U12 girls made a trip to Tralee to take on John Mitchels. After a slow start, our girls found their rhythm after the first quarter. They started to show their ability, teamwork, and score taking. John Mitchels to their credit put in a stellar performance of their own and ensured there was a good competitive and sporting occasion. Thanks to John Mitchels for hosting and organising the referees who did an excellent job.
U12 BOYS: There was great news for our Under 12 boys team who have been successful in their application to play in Croke Park on Tuesday July 29th. They will get one hour on the field playing against teams from all over Ireland and this will be followed by a tour of the stadium and museum. The Under 12 management team will be busy organising the day and ensuring the boys have a day to remember. It would be great if Kerry won the All-Ireland on the same field two days before hand.
SPECIAL MEETING: The Club Executive are advising all members of Killarney Legion GAA Club that there will be a special general meeting held in the clubhouse on Tuesday the 17th of June at 8pm to discuss the election of a new Trustee. GAA.
MURPHYS BAR: Congratulations to our Golf Classic guru and loyal member Sean Murphy as his family business, Murphys Bar, celebrates 70 years in existence this month. As with all our sponsors we urge our members to always remember them when doing their business in town.
LOTTO: Results Monday June 3rd. Numbers were 2,4,15,17. Bonus No 12. No Jackpot Winner. Lucky Dips/Match 3s. Denny O’Sullivan c/o Pat Kissane. Elaine Lyne online. Cian Gammell online.
Dr Crokes GAA
SFL DIV. 5: Our B side continued their impressive form in Division 5 of the County League with a comprehensive win against Gneeveguilla B. This result means that we have secured promotion to division 4 for next season but all focus will now be on trying to win the league title. Fielding a strong team we played with the elements and three first half goals by Liam Kelleher, Brendan Falvey and Aodhan Burns aided by some fine two pointers by Dara O’Shea meant that we went in at half time with a healthy lead. We were never threatened in the second half and the players deserve a lot of credit for the manner in which they have played all year long. Next up is a long trip to Valentia next weekend to play the Islanders in a back game.
LGFA: U10 Our U10 girls took part in the LGFA U10 Activity Day in Croke Park on the Monday of the June Bank Holiday. Parents, mentors and spectators were treated to some brilliant football, all 20 Crokes girls gave it their all on the hallowed turf and played terrific. They did their club, families and themselves proud. Crokes were one of 2 teams selected to represent Kerry for the day with teams from the 32 counties participating. All clubs had a panel of 20 players, with everyone having the opportunity to play in four mini-Go Games throughout a morning or afternoon session.
LOTTO took place June 9th. Numbers drawn were 5, 7, 15, 19. Jackpot of €7,700 was NOT WON. 11 patrons matched 3 numbers and receive €40

Fossa GAA
LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 08/06/2025 for a jackpot of €10,800 were 3, 5, 14, 26. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Geraldine Courtney, Liam Hickey, Jade Houlihan, Timmy O’Leary, Noel and Mason Coffey. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online.
COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 2: Fossa slipped into relegation territory with a defeat away to Kenmare on Sunday. Shorn of a number of key players through injury, this was always going to be a big ask and so it transpired. Rian Colleran did open the scoring, but Kenmare reeled off the next four scores, points from Killian and Harry Buckley kept Fossa in touch. With Kenmare dominating the midfield exchanges their forwards had a good supply of ball and once they got their first goal on 12 minutes there was only going to be one winner. Fossa tried hard but found it difficult to get possession in the Kenmare half and they trailed at the break 3-11 to 0-7. The second half didn’t bring any change in fortune for the Fossa players despite their best efforts, and it finished Kenmare 4-19 Fossa 1-08. Team: Lee Lenihan, Dan O’Connell, Brian Myers, Anthony O’Keeffe, Rian Colleran 0-1, Eoin Talbot, Kieran O’Sullivan, Matt Rennie 1-0, Darren Ryan 0-1, Dan O’Keeffe, Harry Buckley 0-2, Sam Buckley 0-1, Michael O’Dwyer, Killian Buckley 0-3, Ruari Doyle, David Butler, Mark Donnellan, Gary Cronin, Pauric Talbot. FOSSA MEITHEAL: The Fossa Meitheal begins again for the summer, if you can spare an hour and a half on a Tuesday evening from 6.30 to 8pm it would be greatly appreciated. Meeting on the top of the Nugget hill (at the old German flats) just to do a tidy up of our beautiful parish, there is a job for everyone!
BLITZ: The Dr Crokes players who participated in the U10 blitz at the Killarney Legion club grounds in Derreen.
Kilcummin GAA
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 1: Kilcummin made it three wins on the bounce in Division 1 of Credit Union County Football League on Sunday when they claimed a vital two points after they defeated Spa 1-21 to 2-11. The win all but secures the teams participation in the top tier for another season as they move to the 10-point mark in the table but will be anxious to keep their good form going with games to come against Glenflesk and Beaufort. Despite making a bright opening with points from Paul O’Shea, Philip O’Leary, Mark O’Shea and Cian Lynch seeing Kilcummin take an early 0-4 to 0-2 lead it was Spa through their own purple patch that led at the end of the opening quarter 1-7 to 0-4. If Spa owned the opening quarter, it was the away side that owned the second quarter as Kilcummin kept the hosts scoreless and with the help of a Philip O’Leary goal and five unanswered points Kilcummin held a two-point lead at the break 1-9 to 1-7. Matt Keane doubled the lead on resumption with a 2 pointer before another 2-pointer from Mark O’Shea saw them push 1-13 to 1-8 clear by the 40th minute. A Spa goal aided by a late scoring spree reduced the gap to just two points with 57 minutes remaining before a Brendan Kealy free settled the ship late on before points from Cian Foley and a brace by Matt Keane secured victory.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 7B: Meanwhile in Division 7B Kilcummin are back on top of the eight-team group following a facile win over St Michaels/ Foilmore on Saturday evening at home.
UP FOR THE MATCH: On Friday 20th June we are holding a Feile “Up for the Match Night” at the Clubhouse from 7.30pm. It will run until 9pm when the team will be presented to the crowd. During the hour we will have a number of guest interviews along with members of the local Scor team who won Club of the Year recently. Also at the end of the evening the Feile team will be introduced to the club, and it would be great to see as many as possible attend this club event.
U12 COUNTY LEAGUE PHASE 2: Kilcummin Green & Red Teams vs Ballyduff. We were back in action this week for our third Phase 2 Go-Game match in the U12 County League, taking on a strong Ballyduff side with both our Green and Red teams. As always, games between these teams are competitive, skilful, and full of heart—and this time was no different. Our Green team had another close encounter against a physically strong and skilful Ballyduff, a team we’ve had close games with in recent times. It was great to see our older group of players getting the chance to play together and really show what they’re about. The attitude across the team was top-class from start to finish. There were excel-
lent performances all over the pitch, but a special shout-out goes to Daniel McGuire, who was rock-solid in defence all game. Also, huge credit to Conor Murphy in goals—he’s really settling into the role and made some excellent saves to keep things tight. Our Red team were excellent and put in a brilliant all-round performance to pick up a well-earned win. Everyone played their part, and the teamwork and foot-passing on display were really impressive. Conor Doyle had a great game in goal, pulling off some top saves. Ronan O’Leary was a powerhouse at the back, and Cillian O’Dwyer had a fine game in midfield. A big thanks to Ballyduff for two really sporting games. Also, to Rory and Jack, our TY referees.
O’BRIEN CUP: Congratulations to Connemara Gaels GAA Club in Boston especially Sean O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan and Damien Doolan (Management). It was the first time since 2016 that the club last achieved the feat. Great to see so much Kilcummin involvement.

Muckross Rowing Club
REGATTA CANCELLATIONS: The rowing community would be forgiven for thinking that Mother Nature has been lashing out recently with multiple event cancellations due to high winds. A number of June racing fixtures, including regattas in Carlow, Galway and Cork, have all been postponed or cancelled, due to high winds. Last weekend, the Munster Branch Regatta scheduled for the National Rowing Centre in Cork, became the latest victim on the fixtures calendar. Hopefully we will see more settled conditions returning as the regatta season approaches its peak. Crews are continuing to train hard ahead of some major competition over the remainder of June and July. Last weekend, a number of our Junior 18 crews travelled to the Marina in Cork to avail of the calmer waters there with thanks to our good friends and hosts in Lee Rowing Club.
BOATHOUSE CLEAN UP: Many thanks to all our members and parents of juniors who supported our boathouse clean up last weekend.
UPCOMING: Cork Regatta, Sat-Sun, June 21st-22nd, NRC Farran; Rowing Ireland 1k Classic, Lough Rynn, Sat-Sun June 28-29th; Fermoy Regatta, Sunday, July 6th; Irish Rowing Championships Fri-Sun, July 11-13th.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club
CUP: On Sunday June 08th , 26 Competitors took to the waters of Lough Lein to fish in the Church Island Cup Competition - Those present in the car park on the morning were greeting by fellow angler Cyril Boggins ,making his way nimbly on crutches about the angling fraternity , as always with words of encouragement, advice and banter - a Hearty Get Well as You Go to Cyril as he continues to recover from his recent set back . Conditions on the day were excellent for angling, and this was reflected in a very busy weigh in shed at the end of the days angling. The top five rods on the day were as follows. 1) Anthony Griffin, 2) Tom Dennehy, 3) Liam Buckley, 4) Mike Doody, 5) Dave Mears. Heaviest Trout went to the rod of Tom Dennehy.
TABLE: At this stage of the angling calendar, we have fished four of our seven senior competitions of the year, and the top of points table looks as follows. The Experienced Liam Buckley commands a slender lead on 32 points, to his credit gaining valuable points in every competition. Anthony Griffin is closing in, at second place, with 29 points, having finished top rod in the last two competitions. Tom Dennehy, having had a slow start to the year is now making good headway and holds 26 points and third spot. Dave Mears completes the lead pack, with 22 points to his credit, he is well in contention still in fourth place. The next senior competition will be in
mid-September, when the club competes in the Mar Loughlane shield and fishes also for the Michael Fleming Memorial Cup.
