Sale of Pretty Polly site to ETB looms

The future of the former Pretty Polly site in Killarney was discussed at Monday's Kerry County Council meeting, with Mayor Maura Healy-Rae seeking an update on its redevelopment.

The Council confirmed its intention to sell the property to Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) for the development of a Further Education and Training Campus. Kerry ETB has advised they are currently working through the necessary business case governance procedures.

Killarney connectivity issues raised in Dáil

Concerns regarding a proposed footbridge connecting Killarney’s train and bus stations were again raised in Dáil Éireann this week by Deputy Danny Healy-Rae, despite the Department of Transport stating last month that it was not a priority project.

During a Dáil debate on Wednesday, Deputy Healy-Rae highlighted the inconvenience for travellers.

"In Killarney, the train station is on one side of the railway platform. The bus station is on the other side of the rail track," he said.

"We looked for a connecting bridge so that people would not have to go out on the street and down by the Great Southern Killarney with bags and everything, but we were told there was no funding for that. I ask the Minister to look at this again."

Last month, the National Transport Authority (NTA) had designated the €5 million project a low priority, citing a need to address "acute accessibility deficiencies" at other stations and a "limited funding environment."

A 2019 Irish Rail review had identified a pedestrian bridge with lifts and steps as the preferred solution for the Killarney connection.

Deputy Healy-Rae also used the debate to call for improved rural bus links, acknowledging some recent enhancements to services (see side bar).

"We have more public transport at the present time," he said, citing the service from Kenmare through Kilgarvan to Killarney as an example. However, he suggested that a medium-sized bus might be more suitable for that route than the current large one as well as the need for more bus stops.

"Maybe we could get more bus stops," he said, adding "it is not much good to have a bus passing by when people are waiting by the side of road who cannot be picked up because they are too far away from the bus stops, we have."

He called on the local authority to collaborate with the Department of Transport to provide these additional stops. Deputy Healy-Rae specifically mentioned that places like Clonkeen continue to experience difficulty accessing public transport.

The Minister confirmed to Deputy Cahill that Kerry ETB is preparing its business case in conjunction with SOLAS the College of the Future Major Projects.

Local Link bus route to Waterville enhanced

TFI Local Link Kerry Route 280 is set to be enhanced from Killarney to Waterville via Killorglin, with changes effective from Monday, June 23.

The enhanced route will now provide additional morning and evening services. This brings the total daily return services to nine between Waterville and Killorglin, with four of these return services extending to Killarney. This enhancement is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, a national public transport initiative funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 280 will continue to offer peaktime services for commuters and connections to regional bus and rail services at Killarney station, linking to the wider TFI Public Transport Network. The route from Waterville to Killarney will maintain connectivity to villages and areas including Caherciveen, Kells, Glenbeigh, Killorglin, and Beaufort.

Summertime

celebration will focus on historical links

The fascinating stories of The Great Gatsby author F Scott Fitzgerald and the man who built Washington, John McShain, will be brought to life in Killarney in early July when the town hosts a culture-rich summertime celebration that will focus on great historical links.

New research reveals strong anecdotal evidence that the man who penned The Great Gatsby 100 years ago had close family connections with Kerry and that exciting link will be celebrated during the two-day Celebration of Irish and American Friendship.

At the Anam Arts and Culture Centre on the evening of Thursday, July 3, talented Killarney author Patrick O’Sullivan Greene, who has written an extensive biography tracing the life and times of F Scott Fitzgerald, will deliver what promises to be an engaging talk, Revolution, Rejection and Revival, that will tell the story of Fitzgerald’s Irish-American journey.

It will feature a vivid insight into the brilliant but turbulent life of the acclaimed novelist, essayist and short story writer, revealing his surprising relationship with his Irish identity.

In keeping with the theme, the event, which will commence at 5.00pm, will also feature a Great Gatsby dance spectacular, tuition on how to dance the Charleston and the musical magic of Jack Patrick Healy, Killarney’s very own Liberace.

At the same venue at 5.00pm the following evening, July 4, the life and times of the great John McShain will be told in word, poetry, music and song.

The top class production, co-produced by schoolteacher Noel P O’Sullivan and performing arts school professional Fiona Crowley, will chart the life and times of the McShain family, their time in Killarney and their incredible legacy in the town.

Calls to remove Sika deer from National Park

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has called for the complete removal of Sika deer, an introduced species from Japan, to protect native oak woodlands and Ireland's native Red deer.

While Sika are not currently classified as an 'invasive species', Deputy Cahill argues that their non-native status and threat to local ecosystems warrant reclassification and removal.

Deputy Cahill stated that the increase in deer numbers, with animals now seen far from Killarney National Park, indicates insufficient food sources within their usual habitats. He emphasized that without natural predators, culling is the only method to manage their population. The threat to native oak trees from deer eating bark was also highlighted as

a significant concern.

"The sheer vastness of numbers means that deer of both species are a danger on roads throughout Kerry and are also the cause of recent rises in the incidence of Lyme disease, borne by ticks that attach themselves to deer," Deputy Cahill said. He added, "If we wish to protect both our native Red deer and woodland oak, and reduce the spread of Lyme, it makes sense that we have a major cull of deer."

Deputy Cahill confirmed he has raised this matter in Dáil Éireann. He stated that he has been advised of ongoing work at EU level and by the Irish Deer Management Strategy Group (IDMSG), with native woodland protection being a priority. Deputy Cahill concluded that he will continue to advocate for a significant cull of deer.

Minister Michael Healy-Rae visits Derreen Sports site

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae TD recently visited the Derreen Sports CLG facility currently under construction in Killarney.

He was joined by Cllr Niall 'Botty' O’Callaghan to view progress on what is set to become a major community sports and recreation hub for the county.

The visit followed a meeting that Minister Healy-Rae arranged between the Derreen Sports committee and Minister for Sport, Charlie McConalogue. Minister McConalogue was highly impressed with the project and gave a firm commitment that his Department officials would work closely with the committee to support them in drawing down the grants already allocated to the project.

Speaking after the visit, Minister HealyRae said:“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local clubs and community leaders come together with a shared vision. I was proud to help arrange a meeting with Minister McCo-

nalogue, and I’m delighted to see the strong commitment from Government to support this initiative. It will be a huge asset for Killarney and for the wider Kerry area.”

Cllr Niall 'Botty' O’Callaghan added: “It’s incredible to see the progress being made on site and the professionalism of everyone involved. This facility will serve generations to come. I want to sincerely thank Minister Healy-Rae for his ongoing support and for securing direct engagement with Minister McConalogue and his team, that sort of backing makes all the difference.”

Gneeveguilla woman to cycle Ring of Kerry in honour of father's kidney donor

Eithne Murphy, a native of Gneeveguilla, will participate in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for the first time on July 5.

She is cycling in support of the Irish Kidney Association, a cause significant to her as it coincides with the month her father, Ted Murphy, received a kidney transplant 12 years ago. Eithne, the eldest of three sisters, is dedicating her cycle to the deceased kidney donor whose transplant in July 2013 at Beaumont Hospital marked a turning point for her father's health and their family's life. This followed nearly three years of dialysis treatment.

Ted's diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease came after he presented unwell at Mallow General Hospital and was transferred to Cork University Hospital. Tests revealed he was born with a single failing kidney, leading to immediate dialysis. "It was such a difficult time," Eithne recalled. "We had no idea anything was wrong. Watching him go through dialysis attending University Hospital Kerry three times a week and seeing how it affected his energy and

quality of life and watching him lose weight was heartbreaking."

Now retired from Munster Joinery, Ted resides in Gneeveguilla and is a grandfather of five. His youngest grandchild, Dervila (11), was born three months after his transplant.

Eithne added: “We’re so glad to still have our dad here with us. He’s been able to watch his grandchildren – who were very young when he got sick –grow up, and we never take that for granted. The transplant gave us more time together, and we’ll always be thankful for that.”

Eithne, a mother of two who works in an accountancy practice in Killarney, is cycling to support the Irish Kidney Association, which assisted her father and family.

"I’m so grateful for everything the Irish Kidney Association has done. Taking part in this cycle is my way of saying thank you and honouring my dad’s kidney donor and their family. It’s a small gesture, to show my appreciation.”

She is encouraging others to support her efforts to raise funds and awareness for kidney health and organ donation.

"Any support you can give would mean the world – not just to me and my family, but to so many others who rely on this incredible charity including over 2,500 dialysis patients and their families from around the country. Thank you for helping me give back and raise awareness for this vital cause.”

'Kids Go Free' for Sunday Lunch at Aghadoe Heights

Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa has introduced a new family-friendly Sunday lunch offering in its Heights Lounge this summer.

The five-star hotel, overlooking the Lakes of Killarney, will now offer complimentary kids’ meals from its updated kiddies’ menu when two adults dine from the Heights Lounge Sunday Lunch menu.

This offer is available for children aged 12 and under and includes a starter, main course, and dessert from the children's menu.

As part of the refresh, a classic Sunday Roast will also be introduced to the Heights Lounge menu, providing a more relaxed dining option compared to the hotel's formal Lake Room.

General Manager Brian Bowler said: “We know families are looking for something easy and enjoyable on a Sunday, especially during the summer when things are a little more laid-back and they have more time to get out and about. The Heights Lounge is the ideal spot – it’s elegant but informal, with unbeatable views and now, a Sunday roast the whole family can enjoy for a great deal.”

The ‘Kids Go Free’ offer runs every Sunday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, from now until the end of August. Bookings are recommended and can be made by calling +353 64 6631766 or emailing reception@aghadoeheights. com. For more information, visit aghadoeheights.com.

Killarney pushes for the gold in Tidy Towns Competition

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has stressed that the town’s excellent performance in the latest Irish Business Against Litter League rankings is just the tonic it needs ahead of the imminent visit of the Tidy Towns adjudicators.

The IBAL judges ranked Killarney third overall in the country and congratulated everybody who contributed to what they termed “a superb performance.”

Chamber Co-President and Tidy Towns committee member, Johnny McGuire, said what was most encouraging is that no less than seven of the 10 sites inspected on this occasion received the top A grade and the judges were very impressed by all the approach roads to town.

“You only get one chance to make a first impression and it’s great to hear that the impact Killarney gives when approaching the town is very good,” Mr McGuire said.

He said enormous credit is due to the management and staff of Killarney Municipal District Council who have performed in an outstanding fashion and are leading by example by presenting the town at its very best.

“It’s not that long ago when Killarney

was languishing well down the IBAL league table but the team in the town hall and dedicated volunteers have really turned that around and created a town we can all be very proud of,” the Chamber official said.

“We’ve steadily climbed up the table and we improved from 10th position at the start of last year to third place overall on this occasion. Thanks must go to the council management, the elected representatives and, especially, the dedicated outdoor staff who can be really proud of their work”.

Mr McGuire called on everybody in the town to play their part – no matter how small – as the judges in the national Tidy Towns competition and, more locally, the Killarney Looking Good awards, prepare to make their deliberations in the coming weeks.

“Cigarette butts and food-related litter were all that held Killarney back this time. We would urge people just to think twice before they discard such items going forward,” he said.

Mr McGuire said it is heartening that Killarney is in the bronze medal position in the IBAL league and if everybody plays their part, there is no reason why it can’t take gold again in the Tidy Towns competition.

Killarney projects secure €40k in Local Enhancement funding

Projects across the Killarney area are set to receive a total of €39,535.55 in funding under the Government's Local Enhancement Programme 2025.

This funding, part of over €200,000 allocated to Kerry, supports voluntary groups, community centres, sports clubs, and other local organisations. Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae TD welcomed the announcement, stating, "This funding is about recognising and supporting the people and groups who give their time and energy to make our communities better. These small grants go a long way in rural Ireland helping groups to buy equipment, carry out repairs or cover essential running costs.”

Deputy Danny Healy-Rae added, “We

Successful Projects in Killarney Area:

know the huge impact these grassroots organisations have, and we are proud to stand up for them in securing this funding. It’s a vote of confidence in the pride, care and leadership shown by communities across Kerry.”

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill also welcomed the boost. “It is very encouraging to see funding directed to such a wide range of community groups and local projects across the county.” He highlighted support for Men's and Women's Sheds, community councils, tidy towns groups, and various sporting organisations.”

The Local Enhancement Programme provides small grants for operational costs and capital supports, aiming to improve facilities within communities.

Community fighting back against an invasive enemy

A major community initiative to fight back against the havoc being wreaked by the invasive rhododendron plant in the 27,000 acre Killarney National Park is making remarkable progress.

Since 2014 volunteers with the Killarney Mountain Meitheal have been enthusiastically engaged in the programme – putting in around 30,000 work hours up to now – and the initiative is continuing apace with very significant results.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service – which is spearheading the project – has confirmed that thousands of acres have been cleared by park staff, paid contrac-

tors and volunteers.

NPWS Divisional Manager, Eamonn Meskell, said the ongoing eradication work is necessary in such a hugely important area for biodiversity, including ancient oak and yew woodlands.

The Trustees of Muckross House are the main sponsor of the voluntary Mountain Meitheal which sees dozens of volunteers taking to the woods to tackle the rhododendron, every Sunday and Tuesday morning, from October to May.

To date, the Trustees have provided funding of €120,000 for insurance, equipment, fuel, training and food.

The specialist training involves chainsaw-handling courses, as well as instruction in trail design and maintenance, manual handling and the use of pesticides.

“It is a pleasure to be in a position to support the work of the Meitheal,” declared Muckross House General Manager Shane Treacy.

“The dedication displayed by the volunteers is staggering and it reflects the esteem in which the National Park is held by the people of Killarney.

“The Trustees look forward to working with the NPWS and supporting the Meitheal for many years to come,” he added.

One of the Meitheal founders, Johnny McGuire, said the project has involved the equivalent of 1,000 volunteers annually.

“We’re working to clear rhododendron from highly sensitive areas of the National Park under the auspices of the management of the NPWS but we

wouldn’t be in a position to achieve our goals without the support of the Trustees of Muckross House and the NPWS,” he added.

Mr McGuire said the volunteers are encouraged that the necessary resources have been put at the disposal of the NPWS to keep the wonderful State asset that is the National Park in an appropriate condition.

“We take great satisfaction in experiencing the transformative impact of the recent purchase of two specialist, heavy-duty machines by the NPWS to eradicate the rhododendron in an efficient, labour-saving, speedy way,” he said.

The Mountain Meitheal held a total of 53 workcamps between last October and this May with an average of over 20 volunteers per outing.

“These sessions are essential for giving native plants an opportunity to regener-

ate naturally,” said Mr McGuire Specific areas in the National Park which have been the focus of the Meitheal work include the Blue Pool, Bluebell Wood and the Abbey Wood. Another sponsor, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, provided food, accommodation and transport for three Men’s Sheds workcamps which saw 120 men from all over the country volunteering for three days of clearance duties in Killarney.

Companies and organisations in Killarney are also turning out in sizeable groups to help with the clearance work and the organisers would be delighted if more people were willing to get involved in that way, even on a once-off basis. Killarney National Park, which is home to rare plants and animals, is one of the most important areas for biodiversity in Ireland, but invasive species, such as rhododendron, have been a major threat to that biodiversity.

Margaret Thatcher’s link to Kerry could increase tourism says UK Councillor

A UK councillor has suggested that Margaret Thatcher’s ancestral ties to Kerry could generate more tourism for the county. Councillor Ashley Baxter appeared on Radio Kerry this week where he spoke about the Iron Lady’s family connection to the area. Margaret Thatcher’s grandmother was born in Kenmare in 1811 and emigrated to the UK in the 1830s. Councillor Baxter is an independent councillor in Thatcher’s hometown, Grantham, and is involved in the organisation of a centenary event to commemorate the former British Prime Ministers life. He spoke on the Kerry Today programme about Thatcher’s Irish roots on Wednesday morning. Councillor Baxter said that by promoting her familial connection to Ireland, it could “generate more clicks” online and potentially draw in more visitors. He told the radio presenter that it’s important to “celebrate every connection to every person” as “if someone went to Kerry and discovered there was a link to Margaret Thatcher, they would find it fascinating.” He was quick to point out that Kerry should not take responsibility for her legacy, which is a rather controversial one, particularly in Ireland. Margaret Thatcher was the leader of the British Conservative Party and has been a divisive political figure in both English and Irish history.

It comes as someone in Kerry woke up €120,000 euro richer on Monday morning. The National Lottery announced that an online player

Ryan Tubridy shared some good news this week as he announced his engagement live on the radio. The former Late Late Show presenter revealed that he proposed to his girlfriend on a romantic trip in the West of Ireland last week. He made his relationship public with his now fiancée Dr Clare Kambamettu in 2023 when they attended the Irish Post Awards in London. It is believed the romance began after Clare made an appearance on his RTE Radio 1 show in March of that same year. Dr Clare Kambamettu won as the London Rose in 2010. Clare is a clinical psychologist, and she has also worked as a TV Presenter in the past. Ryan has described the engagement as a very exciting time to be alive and said that he was a “very lucky man”.

Temperatures to soar to an astounding 26ºC today

Slap on the suncream and grab the sun lounger, it’s time to head to the beach. This weekend is set to be a scorcher with Met Eireann predicting temperatures today could soar to a sizzling 26ºC. The weather today will be very warm with spells of high summer sunshine.

Tomorrow’s temperature is predicted to drop slightly to 23ºC. The sun will still shine; however, forecasters have warned it will be a mix of cloudy and sunny spells with some scattered showers during the day. It’s time to enjoy the sunny weather while it’s here.

Irish people urged to stay vigilant of travel scams during summer season

As the summer holiday season gets underway, Irish people are being urged to stay vigilant when booking holidays this year.

FraudSMART is a fraud awareness initiative developed by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) and they are warning Irish people to stay on high alert for any potential travel scams. Travel scams are on the rise this year and it is easy to get caught out, according to the organisation. FraudSMART is advising people to be wary of any ‘limited time offers’ or ‘discounted prices’ that might be on offer online. These deals are usually advertised on social media, online adverts and on highly convincing fake websites. Niamh Davenport, who is the

head of Financial Crime at BPFI, has emphasised the importance of double checking the authenticity of a website before providing any banking details. She said: “If you pause before you pay, it can make the difference between the holiday of a lifetime or a holiday disaster.” Potential red flags to watch out for include payment by bank transfer or feeling pressured to act quickly when making a booking. Niamh Davenport is also encouraging those that have been impacted by travel scams to reach out for help.

Significant progress made on driving test wait times

Significant progress has been made by the Road Safety Authority in their attempts to reduce waiting times for driving tests nationwide.

The average national waiting time for a driving test now stands at 18.4 weeks, a notable difference from the 27 weeks recorded at the end of April. The RSA were under severe pressure earlier this year when it was revealed that there was a massive backlog in driving tests for learner drivers and were ultimately tasked by the Government to bring it down to 10 weeks by September. In May, they announced an Action Plan on how they would achieve this goal. The new measures introduced by the RSA include the expansion of testing hours which now run on weekday eve-

nings, Saturdays and bank holidays from 7.25am to 7pm. There has been an increased number of new testers trained in. The RSA also said that invitations are being issued to areas with a bigger demand to ensure that slot allocations are being utilised more efficiently. Waiting times are falling faster than projected under the Action Plan. The original prediction for June was that waiting times would be on average 22 weeks. Brendan Walsh, Chief Operations Officer with the RSA said: “These improvements reflect the pace and focus with which the RSA and its teams have been implementing the targeted measures outlined in the Action Plan, and we expect the service waiting time to be below 18 weeks at the end of June.”

Ireland mourns Slane Castle’s Lord Henry Mount Charles

Lord Henry Mount Charles, custodian of Slane Castle and an influential Irish figure, has passed away at the age of 74 following a decade long cancer battle.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement released on Wednesday evening. They paid tribute to Lord Henry, describing him as a “beloved husband, father, and grandfather” who “leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as a passionate steward of Ireland's heritage, dedicating his life to preserving Slane Castle and transforming it into a beacon of culture, music, and community.” Lord Henry was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014. He is famously known for hosting an array of star-studded concerts at his Meath ancestral residence. Slane Castle has hosted very

famous acts in the past including Queen, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Bowie and Harry Styles. The capacity of the venue is 80,000 and thousands flock there every year. The castle itself is steeped in rich history; it’s overlooked by the Hill of Slane. It has been said that St Patrick lit his paschal fire here, after he was summoned by the High King to Tara when Ireland was converted to Christianity. President Michael D. Higgins has paid tribute to Lord Henry’s life. He said: “Lord Henry’s contribution was quite unique and a very important turning point in live music in Ireland when he decided to begin using the natural amphitheatre at Slane Castle as a venue at which public performances could be held by some of the most contemporary makers of music.”

Muckross House hosts special legacy concert for 60th anniversary

A special legacy concert, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Muckross House opening to the public, took place at Muckross House, Killarney, on Saturday, June 14. This event was part of the Trustees of Muckross House and Muckross Research Library's anniversary projects.

The evening featured music and dance, including the premiere of 'The Muckross Suite' by JJ O’Shea. The concert showcased two significant projects initiated by the Muckross House Research Library to reflect on the landmark attraction's history.

The first project focused on the development of traditional Irish dance, revisiting North Kerry styles and acknowledging the contribution of dance teacher Jeremiah Molyneaux (1881-1965). Dr. Cathe-

rine Foley, from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, previously recorded this dance legacy between 1983 and 1985. She returned last year to document the tradition's evolution. Contributions from Fr. Pat Ahern, Patricia Hanafin, and Justin Walsh supported this work. The second initiative was the commissioning of 'The Muckross Suite,' a musical piece by award-winning producer JJ O’Shea. This suite traces the story of Muckross House from its completion in 1843 to its public opening in 1964, unfolding through different musical styles. The concert began with tunes from the Muckross House Music Collection performed by Mary Mitchell and Karl Nesbitt, followed by North Kerry traditional reels, hornpipes, and jigs. Featured dancers included five-time world dance champion David Geaney, Jimmy

Hickey, Mossie Walsh, and Jonathan Kelliher. 'The Muckross Suite' was then performed by Paul de Grae on guitar and
keyboard, Reidun Schlesinger on harp, accompanied by Barry Lynch on uilleann pipes and Seán Abeyta on fiddle.

From Sydney to Kerry: Moving your life across the world

How does one even begin to move their life across the world?

I remember thinking, I did it once before, I can do it again. Wrong. I found it harder this time around.

I didn’t expect it to be so challenging. My main problem was choosing what I wanted to keep. There were certain things I couldn’t bring of course, household items, furniture, that kind of thing. My biggest issue was my clothes. I decided if I was going home, I wanted to do a big spring clean (in winter) and get rid of any clothes that I hadn’t worn in six months. Turns out, I’m a hoarder! Who knew? (I knew!) I barely recognised the clothes that sat in my wardrobe for over three years. I’m also a huge procrastinator so although I started sorting my clothes 2 months before I was due to move, I didn’t finish until maybe 3 days beforehand. Bad, I know, but I found it hard to part with some of my belongings. Again, self-proclaimed hoarder. I’m trying to work on it.

Four black bags and a charity shop drop off later, I was down to a 30kg suitcase and a 9kg carry-on. It’s a surreal feeling when you’re looking at your life packed into two suitcases. I had to leave behind some very precious items, my book collection being one of them. Unfortunately, I had to choose a select few to bring (although I wish I could have brought all of them!)

I was ready to go – bags packed, clothes donated, said my goodbyes (the hardest part). The worst of it was over! Or so I thought. When I got to the airport, I had a nightmare checking in! My big suitcase was 5kg over and I was told to leave, repack and queue again. Queue again! I had purposely arrived at the airport early so that I could have a stress-free airport experience. My emotions were already heightened – I shed a little tear,

repacked and joined the queue again.

I told myself it was going to be okay. I was flying home with a friend who had been on holiday in Sydney, so I sent her a quick text to let her know I was delayed, and I’d be through security shortly.

I got to the check-in desk again and was greeted by a different person. This time they decided to check my hand luggage which was now 4kg over because I squeezed the clothes from the big suitcase to the other one. Oh bother! Again, I was told to repack and join the queue.

I was flabbergasted. The queue had gotten SO long at this stage and I was

getting severely annoyed. I sighed, left and decided I had to throw away some clothes.

Now picture this. I’m at the airport; I’ve said goodbye to my friends who live on the other side of the world and I’m about to board a 26-hour flight home with no idea on what to expect when I land – and I had to throw away my clothes. Somehow – and don’t ask me how I did this – I got rid of my favourite jeans (which I didn’t realise happened until I unpacked in Ireland) and a few other clothing items.

So again, I go to join the queue for a third

time, and I remember texting my friend that I worked with and I said: “You might see me on Monday morning because I’m leaving the airport if I get turned away a third time”. Luckily, I was fine. My bags were accepted, and I skipped off to security where there was a much-needed glass of prosecco waiting for me. When I did board the flight, everything else went seamlessly and I had no more airport troubles thankfully. I eventually made it to Ireland with most of my clothes in tow.

Tara and David wow the Algarve

If you were wondering why Killarney town was a bit quieter last weekend, it's because over 120 locals were jetting off to the Algarve for Tara and David’s week-long wedding celebrations!

WEDDING OF THE

The couple exchanged vows on Tuesday, June 10, surrounded by cherished family and friends. Tara, daughter of Sean and Trish O’Shea and David, son of Marie O’Sullivan began their journey as husband and wife in a truly memorable, week-long celebration.

The bridal party included Tara’s sisters Lyselle and Rheanne, as well as her good friends Elaine Doody, Grace O’Sullivan, and Rachel McElligott. David’s uncle and close friend Ciaran O’Sullivan was best man and delivered a funny and heartfelt speech on the day. Making up the rest of the groomsmen were David’s friends Chris Davies, Billy McGuire, Darragh O’Doherty, and his new wife’s brother, Mark O’Shea, who is also a close friend of David’s. Page Boy Morgan O’Sullivan and Flower Girl Anna Monson stole some of the limelight as they warmed up the aisle ahead of the bridal party’s entrance.

The happy couple first met many years ago through mutual friends at a birthday party and have been inseparable ever since. Their love story, which began in Killarney, saw the couple move to London for a number of years, where they lived and worked. Their relationship blossomed into a lifelong commitment, much to the delight of all who know them, and in 2019, they returned home to pursue their respective careers. David, a Garda, and Tara, a Dermatology Nurse, recently built their forever home in Aghadoe.

The wedding ceremony itself took place in the idyllic setting of Monte-Das-Oliveria Wedding Estate, just twenty minutes outside of Albufeira. Hinting at the celebratory atmosphere to come, guests were welcomed with local beers, Tequila shots, and an array of beautiful tapas finger food, all preceding an impressive buffet catering to all tastes and dietary

needs. Any calories consumed during the meal were quickly burned off as the energetic Guinness Brothers wedding band kept friends and family dancing well into the early hours.

The speeches were an emotional affair. Groom David acknowledged how beautiful his new wife looked and how long he had long been waiting for their wedding day. He also thanked all the guests who travelled from Ireland and further afield to be with them on their special day. Poignantly, David also remembered the recent passing of Dolly O’Halloran, his newly wedded wife’s late grandmother, who sadly passed away after illness just weeks before the trip to Portugal. Father of the bride Sean O’Shea, a staunch Dr. Crokes man, couldn’t resist getting a dig in about his son-in-law’s beloved Killarney Legion, while David’s mom, Marie, spoke beautifully about her pride for her son David and her delight in welcoming her "one and only daughter-in-law" into the O’Sullivan family.

In keeping with good Irish tradition, day two saw guests gather at a rooftop restaurant at Castello di Norcia. Located on the Marina in Albufeira, guests enjoyed more great food and partied until sunset and beyond. Cork singer and entertainer Emmett Crotty was flown over to provide music, although it didn’t take long before wedding guests stepped up to turn it into a karaoke night.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, the tired but very happy couple said they would love to just rewind the clock and do it all again. After a couple of days back home with their four-legged children, Missy and Mya, the couple are looking forward to jetting off to Torrevieja, Spain, this weekend to reminisce and recharge after the memorable wedding celebrations.

Rare LaFerrari spotted in Killarney during charity run

One of the world's rarest and most valuable cars, a LaFerrari, was spotted on the roads of Kerry last week as part of the Bumblebee 1000 supercar run, the Talladega Nights road run, in aid of Little Blue Heroes.

Valued at over €4 million, this hypercar is one of only 499 ever produced. The striking Ferrari was seen during its overnight halt at the Europe Hotel in Killarney and later at the finish line on Lewis Road.

Its route included a drive along the scenic Ring of Kerry and through Moll's Gap. The LaFerrari is a hybrid powerhouse, driven by a 6.3-litre V12 engine combined with F1-derived technology, producing an impressive 950 brake horsepower (bhp). Its presence was a highlight of the Bumblebee 1000 event, which raises funds for children in need. For more details on the overall Bumblebee 1000 run, readers can turn to page 40.

Restored vintage Riley returned to O'Donoghue family

A vintage early 1950s Riley RM car, once owned by the late Maurice O’Donoghue, was officially handed back to his family on Sunday, at the Gleneagle Hotel.

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club undertook the restoration project, returning the car as a tribute to his wife Margaret and daughter Aine O’Donoghue, Maurice’s daughter. The car had previously been on display

in the foyer of the Gleneagle Hotel.

Members of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club meticulously restored the vehicle. Engineers Dan O’Leary and Mike Buckley carried out the majority of the engine work, and the interior was re-upholstered.

The presentation took place at the main entrance of the Gleneagle Hotel at 11am. Members of the Vintage Club attended, using the occasion to promote the club's activities.

Final Call: Key CAO reminders before the July 1 deadline

As the CAO Change of Mind deadline approaches on July 1 it’s important for students to take the time to carefully review course choices.

No changes can be made after 5pm on July 1 so it is essential to make final changes to your CAO application before that deadline. Here are some key reminders to help you make informed decisions before the deadline closes on July 1st.

1. Revisit Your Course Preferences

Remember, your CAO offers will be based on the ORDER OF PREFERENCE not your predicted or expected points. This means your first choice should always be your genuine first preference, the course you'd most like to do, regardless of how many points you think you’ll get. If you list your choices based on points rather than preference, you risk missing out on a course you would have loved, simply because you didn’t rank it high enough.

2. Do Your Research

Before making any changes, research the courses you're considering. Look beyond the course title — explore the content, modules, placement opportunities, and progression options. Most college websites offer detailed course descriptions, videos, and testimonials. Make sure you know what the course involves and where it might lead you. Also consider the location of the college, accommodation options, travel time, and the social and support networks available. College is not just about the course — the environment can significantly influence your experience and success. If you're adding new courses to your list during the Change of Mind window, ensure you’ve done the same level of research on these as on your original choices. Avoid last-minute additions based on trends, hearsay, or pressure from others. And remember there are some restrictions regarding courses that have an added assessment feature such as an audition or a portfolio. Make sure to check this you on university websites or on www.cao.ie

3. Check Minimum Entry Requirements

Each course has minimum entry requirements (e.g. a certain number of passes at higher level, specific subjects, or grades). Even if you meet the points, you won’t be offered a place unless you also meet these minimum entry criteria.

Use the university websites or career websites such as www.careersportal. ie or www.qualifax.ie to confirm these details.

4. Include as many choices as possible on both Level 8 and Level 7/6 lists. Don’t forget that you have the option to include up to 20 course choices on your CAO application - 10 Level 8 (Honours Degrees) and 10 Level 7/6 (Ordinary Degrees and Higher Certificates). Listing 20 choices gives you 20 chances to get a course. These 2 lists operate completely separate to each other so there is a great chance of getting an offer from both lists on the day the Round 1 Offers come out and you can choose one. Most level 7/6 courses have progression routes onto

Kerry’s season on the line in Park showdown

ALL-IRELAND PRELIMINARY QUARTER-FINAL

Kerry v Cavan

Saturday 3.30pm

Fitzgerald Stadium

If Kerry are to win the 2025 All-Ireland, they’re going to have to do it the hard way.

Last Saturday’s jarring nine-point defeat to Meath left Jack O’Connor’s men second in Group 2, and they must now earn the right to play in the quarters by defeating Cavan in Killarney tomorrow.

Six regular starters were absent for that ill-fated trip to Offaly and O’Connor and the Kerry faithful will be sweating on the availability of those injured stars ahead of this do or die knockout match against Ulster opposition.

Seánie O’Shea had a tight hamstring prior to the Meath game so he was not risked. It is hoped that he will be okay to play this time around.

As for Brian Ó Beaglaoich (unknown), Diarmuid O’Connor (shoulder), Paudie Clifford (hamstring) and Paul Geaney (shoulder), their status has not been made public. The severity of the knee injury sustained by Barry Dan O’Sullivan against Cork has not been officially confirmed either, but it is believed that the damage is of the serious variety. Kerry avoided last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Galway in the preliminary quarter-final draw but coming through

the side door, so to speak, has potentially left them with a tougher path to the final. If they beat Cavan, and the favourites win the other three preliminaries (i.e. Donegal beat Louth, Dublin beat Cork, and Galway beat Down), the only team Armagh can draw in the last eight is Kerry. They would not be able to face any of the other challengers as they have already crossed paths in either the provincial final (Donegal) or group stage (Dublin and Galway). Of course, none of that is set in stone yet. Far from it. For now, Kerry’s focus will be on Saturday and getting back to winning ways against Cavan. The Breffni County caused an upset in Round 1 of the round robin by turning over Mayo. They subsequently found the going tough against Donegal (19-point defeat) and Tyrone (13-point defeat), but they scraped through to the last 12 thanks to Donegal’s dramatic late winner against Mayo.

In the other preliminary quarter-finals, Dublin host Cork at Croke Park (Saturday 6.15pm), Down play Galway at Páirc Esler (Sunday 1.45pm), and Donegal welcome Louth to Ballybofey (Sunday 4pm).

The four group winners – Armagh, Tyrone, Monaghan and Meath – await the winners in the quarters, which will take place the following week at Croke Park.

Kingdom rocked in Royal rumble

Adam Moynihan reports from O’Connor Park, Tullamore

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP 2

Kerry 0-16 Meath 1-22

An understrength Kerry team missed out on a first-place finish in Group 2 of the All-Ireland football championship when they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Meath in Tullamore on Saturday.

Kerry were already down Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Diarmuid O’Connor, Barry Dan O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford and Paul Geaney and they were dealt another significant blow before the ball was thrown in as centre forward Seánie O’Shea was ruled out with a tight hamstring. Fit again Dara Moynihan was drafted into the 26 with Tony Brosnan getting the nod on the 40.

Meath were down bodies too. The speedy James Conlon was a late withdrawal, joining Matthew Costello (and others) on the injury list, so both teams were left short on paper. On grass, only one team seemed to be affected.

It was a cagey opening five minutes but with a boisterous travelling support cheering them on from the stand and terraces, Meath raced into three-nil lead thanks to keeper Billy Hogan (45), Keith Curtis and Jordan Morris (free).

Playing with the aid of a slight breeze, Kerry responded admirably. Hogan was struggling with his kickouts and the

Kingdom took full advantage, scoring five points on the bounce via Micheál Burns, David Clifford (2pt), Dylan Geaney and Tony Brosnan. The joy they were experiencing around the middle was short-lived, however, and the veteran Donal Keogan and the lively Conor Duke both pointed at the other end to level matters at five apiece midway through the half.

Killian Spillane (free) and Geaney nudged the Munster champions back out in front but the final 15 minutes of the period were alarmingly bad from Kerry’s perspective. They were outscored by nine points to one with a pair of quickfire two-pointers in roughly a minute by Eoghan Frayne and Ruairí Kinsella doing considerable damage – both on the scoreboard and in the psychology stakes.

In fact, with Meath totally dominating the middle sector, particularly under breaking ball, Kerry went 14 minutes without scoring. David Clifford’s free in the 34th minute finally broke this barren run.

There was still time for more disappointment, though. A three up breach gifted Meath a tap over free after the hooter, leaving the scores at 0-14 to 0-8 at the break. An upset was now very much on the cards.

Jack O’Connor opted against making changes during the interval and his decision seemed to be justified with 40 min-

utes on the clock. Kerry started the half in the ascendency, buoyed by the black card brandished in the direction of Cathal Hickey when he dragged down Gavin White just seconds after the restart. Two points by Dylan Geaney (the first, perhaps, should have been a goal) and another by Spillane cut the deficit to three, but handy scores by Seán Coffey and Duke up the other end kept the Kingdom at arm’s length.

A three-point spurt between the 49th and 51st minutes gave the men in blue some fleeting hope that a comeback might materialise. Spillane (free), Paul Murphy and Clifford all on target. Those faint hopes were quickly dashed, however, as Meath rounded the final turn and powered for home. Kinsella made it a three-point game, and then came the decisive flurry. Kinsella two-pointer. Duke two-pointer. Menton goal. Now it was a 10-point game, and the hard-working staff at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium knew they had a busy week ahead of them.

Robbie Brennan’s men were comfortable victors in the end, and as Group 2 winners they can now enjoy a week off before the All-Ireland quarter-finals on June 28/29.

For Kerry, an unexpected connecting match awaits. They will be hoping key players are back from injury for the visit of Cavan in the preliminary quarter-final. Either way, they will – to a man – need to

up their game significantly if they want to save their season.

KERRY:

Shane Ryan; Paul Murphy 0-1, Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan; Tadhg Morley, Mike Breen, Gavin White; Joe O’Connor, Mark O’Shea; Graham O’Sullivan, Tony Brosnan 0-2, Micheál Burns 0-1; David Clifford 0-5 (1 x 2pt, 1f), Killian Spillane 0-3 (2f), Dylan Geaney 0-4.

Subs: Dylan Casey for Breen, Ruairí Murphy for Burns, Conor Geaney for O’Sullivan, Seán O’Brien for O’Shea, Dara Moynihan for Spillane.

MEATH:

Billy Hogan 0-1 (45); Séamus Lavin, Seán Rafferty, Ronan Ryan; Donal Keogan 0-1, Seán Coffey 0-1, Ciarán Caulfield 0-1; Bryan Menton 1-0, Adam O’Neill; Conor Duke 0-5 (1 x 2pt), Ruairí Kinsella 0-5 (2 x 2pt), Cathal Hickey; Jordan Morris 0-3 (2f), Keith Curtis 0-1, Eoghan Frayne 0-4 (1f, 1 x 2pt).

Subs: Cian McBride for O’Neill; Eoin Harkin for Hickey, Shane Walsh for Frayne, James McEntee for Kinsella, Diarmuid Moriarty for Rafferty.

Kerry must learn and bounce back quickly

Eamonn Fitzgerald on the challenge facing the Kingdom as they look to recover and keep the show on the road

Kerry’s heavy defeat to Meath will sting, especially when you recall that they hammered the same team by a 15-point margin in Navan just 12 months ago. That was under the watch of Colm O’Rourke.

For last Saturday’s game, Kerry had a team weakened by injuries to Barry Dan, Paul Geaney and Paudie Clifford. We knew of their unavailability after the game against Cork. Add in Seán O’Shea, Diarmuid O’Connor and Brian Ó Beaglaoich.

Going without six of your expected starting 15 in the bid to win the Sam Maguire is a tall task, but Kerry were still expected to win. Meath were also without three of their regular starters.

The demolition by Meath was a game-changer. On the one hand, Kerry could have done with a free weekend if they had won, providing a little more leeway for the injured players to recover and return to play. It also provides Kerry management with the opportunity to test the extended panel. In the fast

Kerry will have a more settled side for tomorrow's game, and a big step up in performance will be required.

modern game, quality substitutions can determine the outcome.

The downside, of course, is that fielding so many substitutes becomes difficult because one needs to see these players operating with a fairly full team. How often have we seen players showing up so well with their clubs and picked for the county team that is short of so many regulars, meaning that too much is being asked of the new players on trial?

It looks like Barry Dan will be out with a long-term injury, and tomorrow’s game may come too soon for Paudie Clifford. He is a key man, orchestrating most of Kerry’s play on offence. Who can ever forget his tour de force in the league final versus Mayo at Croke Park? He created all those match-winning scores. I

doubt if he will start tomorrow, but you would be expecting Kerry to win and hopefully have him available for the rest of the championship. The fixtures will come bang, bang, bang, week after week. Avoidance of any other injuries will be very much in mind by Kerry management.

Kerry must learn from last week’s defeat. They are very lucky to draw Cavan instead of, say, Galway. The Cavan glory days of the Polo Grounds and their subsequent successes in the early 50s are well over as Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, and Armagh have been the trailblazers in Ulster for the past seven decades.

Kerry will have a more settled side for tomorrow's game, and a big step up in performance will be required. You

can expect quite good attendance at Fitzgerald Stadium as supporters will be looking and hoping to see the potential to win out.

After all, the whole All-Ireland scenario will be done and dusted by next month and from August onward, the Kerry Club Championship season will get underway.

Believe it or not, today is the longest day of the year, and the meteorologists inform us that we can expect 15 hours and 19 minutes of daylight. Come to think of it, the days will become shorter after this. The perfect antidote is the return of The Cannister. Nothing shortens the winter like having Sam relocated home to the Kingdom. Tomorrow at the Park will be a good start.

Goals galore in Páirc Uí Chaoimh

Consistent Kerry goalscorers Siofra O’Shea (2-4) and Danielle O’Leary (1-2) were to the fore once again with as the Kingdom defeated Cork 5-7 to 2-9 in the All-Ireland group phase.

Full credit to the whole team, though, including the subs who came on during the game at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The result means that Kerry will have a home venue for the quarter-final, while Cork’s last chance is away to Mayo, and that won't be easy. Let’s not forget that this Kerry LGFA team is much changed from the team that won the 2024 Brendan Martin Cup, ending a 31-year famine. Several members of that side are not involved at the moment. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh has retired, Kayleigh Cronin has gone to Adelaide to take up the Aussie game, and a new management is in place.

The quarters are scheduled for the weekend of July 5/6.

Elsewhere, the Kerry camogie team defeated Down away on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-11 in Round 2 of the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Intermediate Championship to go top of their group.

Many of this Kerry team won an Intermediate Club All-Ireland six months ago with Clanmaurice, which was highlighted in this column at the end of 2024.

Paddy gave

Glenflesk and Muckross lost the very popular Paddy O’Donoghue recently as he was partaking in his favourite pastime, cycling near Kilgarvan.

The retired Kerry CC engineer will be remembered in a special way on July 5 when the Ring of Kerry (ROK) 2025 gets underway. He was there from the very start of the ROK in 1982, joining Denis Geaney and friends on that marvellous cycle around the Ring, raising millions for so many deserving voluntary organisations.

Paddy was a very successful sportsman on the East Kerry football team, which won the three-in-a-row from 1968 to 1970, culminating in lifting the inaugural All-Ireland Senior Club title in 1971. Paddy played a key role at wing forward in those successful campaigns. He also won a Sigerson and Cork County Championship playing with UCC in his undergraduate years. He was a stalwart with his native Glenflesk for many years but did not claim the coveted O'Donoghue Cup medal. It certainly wasn’t his fault, as he gave it everything. On teams with so many well-known players, Paddy was the man you needed to deliver the 101% to win all those titles. He was tenacious, brave and enthusiastic on the

so much and asked for so little

field of play and brought the same enthusiasm to his regular life of gardening, DIY or whatever. Paddy was a doer who got things done.

That infectious laugh brightened many a day for so many, whether it was climbing Mangerton, training for football or the ROK, or playing 31, Paddy enlightened all and our recent meeting led to a lively discussion on Kerry’s bid to win back the Sam Maguire. He called a spade a spade and enveloped it with that disarming smile. Séamus Heaney described it so succinctly in ‘Digging’:

TO SCATTER NEW POTATOES THAT WE PICKED.

LOVING THEIR COOL HARDNESS IN OUR HANDS.

BY GOD, THE OLD MAN COULD HANDLE A SPADE.

Paddy certainly did, literally and metaphorically. He will be a great loss to us all, but most of all to his wife Brenda, nee Hussey, of the well-known Killarney family from St Anne’s Road. Comhbhrón ó chroí to Brenda, his children Florence, Áine, Denise, Brenda, Báirbre, Patrick and Alice, his 17 grandchildren, and his wide circle of friends in the sporting and community worlds of Killarney, Glenflesk and Muckross.

When Paddy encountered an obstacle in life he relished the challenge, smiled and the engineering mind created that bridge of friendship for the water of life to flow freely and lovingly. Especially when he dipped into the magician’s hat to deliver the 5 of trumps, securing with a where-did-that-come-out-of smile vic-

tory, or that pass to a teammate to win the game.

The game of life is over for Paddy, who gave so much to so many and looked for so little, wheeling his way in the peloton, leading to his eternal reward.

Go gcúitítear do shaothar leat, Paddy. Ard-fhear, cara den scoth.

Yet another title for indomitable Celts

KDL PREMIER A FINAL

Killarney Celtic 2-0 Tralee Dynamos

Mounthawk Park

Killarney Celtic’s reign of dominance over the Kerry District League shows little sign of stopping. The Derreen-based club secured an astounding seventh Premier A title in a row on Sunday last, overcoming the challenge of Tralee Dynamos on a scoreline of 2-0.

Celtic started the stronger at Mounthawk Park but despite creating a number of opportunities in the first half, they were unable to break the deadlock. Seán Lovett and Blake Bolster went close early on and Jason Kerins and Graham O'Reilly subsequently had opportuni-

ties, but the game remained tied at zero at the break.

Dynamos carved out their first real chance of the game after the restart but almost immediately it was Celtic who responded to edge in front. Lovett and O'Reilly combined to set up former Kerry FC captain Matt Keane and the experienced midfielder applied the finish to make it 1-0 after 53 minutes.

The Hoops quickly doubled down as Keane made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, and the reigning champions were well on their way.

Keane almost completed his hat-trick soon after but, in the end, the brace was

enough. A seventh consecutive league title for the Killarney side in 2025 – and it will take a good outfit to prevent them from making it eight-in-a-row in 2026.

O’Carroll ‘couldn’t pass up’ Sparta chance

Killarney man Diarmuid O’Carroll has been appointed as a first team coach at Czech giants Sparta Prague.

O’Carroll, who started his football journey with Killarney Athletic before going on to play professionally in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, departs his role as lead coach of Newcastle United’s U21s to take up the new role.

Newcastle United Academy Director, Steve Harper, said: “I’d like to thank Diarmuid for his time with us leading the U21 group. The opportunity to work in Europe is an exciting one for him and we wish him the best of luck as his coaching career continues.”

O’Carroll will, however, continue working with Northern Ireland, where he is a member of Michael O’Neill’s senior men’s backroom team.

“Coaching abroad was always some-

thing I aspired to do, so when this opportunity arose it was something I couldn’t pass up,” the former St Brendan’s College student said.

"Crucially the role also allows me to continue on my journey with the Northern Ireland senior men’s team. I’m excited about this current crop of players and looking forward to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.”

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill said he is “delighted” for the Ross Road native. “He’s an excellent young coach, an important part of our set-up, and this move will undoubtedly further his development.”

O’Carroll will take up his new position for the 2025/26 season.

Currow claim cup glory in Super Sevens finale

The curtain came down on the 2025 Credit Union Schools Super Sevens with a thrilling evening of Senior Boys Finals at the Nagle Rice Community Centre on Tuesday. It was the climax of six action-packed weeks featured 250 games and showcased the talent and commitment of over 900 players, coaches, and mentors.

Currow etched their name into the history books with a first-ever Senior Boys Cup triumph, overcoming a spirited Fossa 26-14 side in a fiercely contested final. After a tight opening half, Currow surged ahead with a powerful second-half display to complete an unbeaten campaign - seven wins from seven - and claim a memorable Grand Slam title. Their victory mirrors the recent success of the Currow Senior Girls team, underlining the school’s growing basketball pedigree.

Their MVP was Adam McCarthy. In a pulsating Bronze Final, Holy Family Rathmore battled back twice to force overtime and ultimately snatched victory in the dying seconds. Knockaderry had led for much of the game, but Rathmore’s resilience paid off as they found the crucial baskets when it mattered most. MVP Evan Burke played a

key role.

In a contest full of flair and intensity, Bantry's Gaelscoil Bheanntraí edged out Gneeveguilla in the Shield Final with a dramatic late score. The Cork visitors trailed for most of the match, but a late surge saw them claim the Shield in one of the tournament’s most entertaining and skilful encounters. Tadhg Ó Húrdail

was their Most Valuable Player. Fans were treated to a classic in the Plate Final as Knocknagree snatched a dramatic win with a last-second basket, breaking Kilcummin hearts in the process. The game swung back and forth with both sides enjoying dominant spells, but it was Knocknagree who found the killer blow in a truly memorable finale. Despite being on the losing side, Cian Lenihan of Kilcummin was selected as MVP.

The following players made the Credit Union Schools Super Seven Boys AllStar Team for 2025: Kaelen Gleeson (Gneeveguilla), Mark O'Connor (Fossa), Tomas Déiseach (Gaelscoil Bheanntraí), Cathal O'Connor (Currow), Karl Thompson (Holy Family Rathmore), Cathal Foley (Cullina), Ruben O'Leary Griffin (Knockaderry).

Killarney Legion GAA

U11 BOYS: Pride of place this week goes to our U11 Boys who were crowned Dylan Crowley Champions 2025 after a superb day of football in Gneeveguilla

on Saturday. The boys played five games in total and went undefeated, showcasing their talent and team spirit throughout. They saved their best for last in a dramatic final against Kilcummin. After conceding three early goals, they found themselves in serious trouble approaching halftime. But showing incredible resilience, they kicked three late points to go in just four points down at the break. The second half saw the boys come out with real hunger. They dominated the closing stages, kicking six unanswered points to complete a memorable comeback and secure the title. This is the first time Legion has lifted the Dylan Crowley Cup since 2017, and this group of lads proved themselves fantastic ambassadors for our club. We’re looking forward to watching their journey continue in the green and white. A huge thank you to Gneeveguilla for hosting a brilliant tournament – well organised and played in great spirit all round. Group Games - Legion 3-4 Rathmore 1-1, Legion 4-6 Kenmare 1-5, Legion 0–4 Glenflesk 1-1. Semi-Final - Legion 5-9 Listry 1-1. Final - Legion 1-9 Kilcummin 3-1. An added bonus was John Hegarty being crowned Player of the Tournament following on from his sister Clodagh getting a similar recognition earlier in the week at the Garda Blitz.

SENIOR B MEN: Our Senior B Team secured a good win in Round 10 of the County League on Friday evening in Direen against Tuosist. The early stages were even but as the first half wore on, we got more on top. A well taken penalty by Daire Murphy approaching half time saw us lead 1-8 to 0-4 at the interval. The second half was an even affair with both sides trading scores. In the end we ran out 7-point winners. Thanks to Tuosist for a good sporting game. Well done to all the players. Great to see so many young players gaining experience and playing so well in this team. The final round is against Rathmore B in two weeks’ time. Final Score Killarney Legion 1-15 Tuosist 0-11.

U8 BOYS: A busy weekend for our U8 Boys who travelled to Firies on Monday to play their counterparts there and then welcomed Fossa to Direen on Saturday morning. The boys did great and are showing a marked improvement week on week.

U14 GIRLS: It proved to be a tough day at the office for our U14 girls Green team as they faced Southern Gaels in a Division 2 semi-final on Sunday afternoon. From the first whistle, the opposition showed sharpness, discipline and intensity that proved difficult to match. Despite a committed effort from our squad, we struggled to gain control in key areas of the pitch and found ourselves under sustained pressure. The opposition capitalized on

their chances well, showing clinical finishing and solid defensive organization throughout. There were still positives to take: the team battled until the final whistle, showed heart, and never gave up. Matches like this are tough but valuable, offering important lessons as we continue to grow and improve together. We regroup, refocus, and look forward to the U13 and East Kerry competitions.

MOTHERS AND OTHERS: Our Mothers and Others had a busy Saturday taking part in the LGFA Munster Blitz in Mallow. Fielding a small but mighty team great football, energy, and connections were made with clubs from the province of Munster and the President of LGFA Triona Murray took time out of her busy schedule to chat with the team on our 7 years bringing women into our Club embracing the ethos of Gaelic4M&O.

Twenty-three teams took part, and Clodagh was the standout candidate for the award. Hard luck to Darragh O’Toole whose Fossa team lost narrowly in the final.

DYLAN CROWLEY MEMORIAL BLITZ: Our U11 boys squad delivered an outstanding performance at today's Dylan Crowley Memorial Blitz in Gneeveguilla, showcasing both skill and character throughout the competition. The team opened their campaign in impressive fashion, securing victories in all three group games to finish as group winners. The football displayed was of the highest quality, with every squad member making vital contributions to these successes. A physically demanding semi-final against a very good Glenflesk side tested the boys' resolve before securing their place in the final. The decider against Legion produced a superb first-half performance to establish a commanding position at the interval. While the second half saw the momentum shift, the lads battled to the final whistle before ultimately falling to a narrow defeat. We extend our gratitude to the tournament organisers for running such an excellently organised competition, and to our travelling supporters whose encouragement was greatly appreciated throughout the day.

FEILE: Last Sunday evening saw the club host a mini Kerry Feile inviting both Glenbeigh/Glencar and Ardfert to play a series of matches with our own side that are heading to Feile on the weekend of June 27th/28th.
