Those were the words spoken by Fr Kieran O'Brien as he celebrated her funeral mass on Monday afternoon. Killarney rallied around the O’Callaghan family this week as the town celebrated the cherished life of Isabelle O’Callaghan, a seventeen-year-old girl who tragically lost her life on Thursday.
Isabelle was riding her horse on Thursday evening when tragedy struck at her home in Rockfield.
Fondly known as Izzy by her family and friends, Isabelle was remembered as a beautiful young woman who wore a big smile every day. She had a deep love for nature, the land, and animals — a love that reflected her generous spirit. Isa-
belle radiated kindness and goodness, qualities that shone through in all aspects of her daily life. When she received kindness, she returned it twice over. That was simply the kind of person she was. Her teachers described her as quiet but confident, and she had many friends in school. She was a daily caller to her grandparents, with whom she shared a close bond. Izzy had a strong work ethic. She was known to be up at the crack of dawn, as there was always work to be done. She loved horses, it was more than just a hobby, it was her vocation. She lived and breathed horses, and although she was only 17, she was well known and respected in equine circles. She travelled the country
for competitions, and the horse box was known to come out at any time of the day or night. Her grandfather Jimmy recalled watching her ride her horse late into the night. Izzy had achieved so much in such a short amount of time. Fr Kieran posed a question to the congregation – what is an accident? He said it’s something that’s not meant to happen. He reminded those gathered that tragedies like this force us to pause and reflect — to cherish what we have, to remember that life is a gift. It can change in an instant, without warning, and it is incredibly fragile. Fr Kieran offered words of strength to the O’Callaghan family, urging them never to give up in the wake of this unimaginable loss. He reminded them that the entire Killarney community stands with them, and they will always be supported in the wake of the loss of their beautiful daughter.
Concerns have been raised about the appearance of shopfronts in Killarney, with fears that the town centre could become "tacky."
It is understood that Westport in County Mayo is the only Municipal District that has moved to protect traditional shop fronts, and the newly elected Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Martin Grady, wants Killarney to follow suit.
At Friday's Killarney Municipal District Meeting, Mayor Grady passed a motion asking "That Kerry County Council would formulate a policy relating to shopfronts in Killarney Municipal District to ensure conformity in their appearance."
Mayor Grady stated that the current policy has too many exemptions and not enough restrictions.
He pointed out that planning permission is not required to change shopfronts unless the use of the building changes. He said it was difficult for people to hang a flower basket in town, yet some retail shops display bright colours, neon lights, and various items in their windows.
He fears that if this continues, Killarney will "lose its character and become tacky."
In response to the motion, a council official replied that Kerry County Council has already published detailed Shopfront Design Guidelines.
These guidelines offer advice on materials, colours, signage, lighting, advertising, and how a shop front relates to nearby buildings. These guidelines are available on the Council’s website.
A new park-and-ride system for Killarney moved a step closer last Friday, as Kerry County Council confirmed key details of the long-discussed shuttle bus service at the latest Killarney Municipal District meeting.
The Council confirmed that the service will operate three buses, seven days a week, from 6am to 11pm.
It will follow a Smart Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) model, which allows flexible routing and scheduling based on real-time requests from passengers. The system will provide corner-to-corner pick-up and drop-off across Killarney town. It is being overseen by Kerry Local Link and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).
Councillor John O’Donoghue raised the issue, asking whether the Council had identified suitable locations on the outskirts of the town to operate a park-andride system.
He said urgent action is needed. “It is impossible to believe that traffic congestion around the town could be worse than it is at the moment, particularly during the summer months,” he said. “In this respect, Killarney is a victim of its own success.”
He added: “The traffic is caused by motor vehicles, and the more people we can get out of their cars and into public transport or on a bicycle, the less traffic we will have in town. This system will not suit everybody all of the time, but I believe that were a public transport system put in place, many would use it. It is some
months since we were first told about this and I would like to think it will be in place before the height of this year’s tourist season.”
In its reply, the Council stated: “The Smart DRT project proposed for Killarney is characterised by flexible routing and scheduling that reacts dynamically to requests from passengers. It will focus on inter-urban trip demand within Killarney town.”
Regarding the park-and-ride system, the Council said that “Park and Stride” options are included in the Killarney Local Transport Plan but specific locations have yet to be confirmed.
Councillor Brendan Cronin questioned whether dedicated bus lanes would be available to allow the service to operate efficiently.
The Council responded: “The installation of bus lanes is desirable in making public transport more efficient where land availability permits. With new developments in traffic management technologies, traffic signal installations can be programmed to positively bias movement of public transport vehicles even without bus lanes.”
Routes for the shuttle service are currently being reviewed, and the system is expected to be launched shortly.
The long-awaited Killarney to Farranfore bypass was again the subject of Dáil debate this week, with local TD Michael Cahill pushing for its advancement.
Deputy Michael Cahill (Fianna Fáil) highlighted the daily traffic issues in Killarney. He stated that residents miss trains, buses, and appointments due to gridlock.
He cited Killarney's role as Ireland's tourism capital, attracting many foreign visitors and that the town's success has led to significant traffic problems.
"It is of the utmost importance that the Government continues to support the Killarney to Farranfore project financially, planning-wise," Deputy Cahill said, confirming that €3 million has already been allocated this year by Minister for Transport, Deputy Darragh O'Brien. Cahill described getting around Killarney as a "nightmare daily,".
He said taxi drivers' experience hour-long delays travelling a few kilometre from Lissivigeen to Fossa.
Seán Canney (Independent TD, Galway East), responding on behalf of the Minister for Transport, confirmed the N22 Killarney to Farranfore project is included
in the National Development Plan (NDP).
He noted that €1 million in funding has been provided for its development in 2025 as part of the €502 million Exchequer capital funds allocated for national roads this year. Canney stated the project is at the route options selection stage, with the preferred transport solution having been presented to the public in November 2024.
Design works are ongoing, and ground investigation works are expected to begin shortly. Canney assured that the project remains part of the NDP and has received sufficient funding to complete its route options phase.
He added that the delivery program for the N22 Killarney to Farranfore project will be reviewed annually within TII's overall funding envelope.
Deputy Canney acknowledged Killarney’s importance and the project’s significance. "I do not believe we would be spending money on a project if we were not going to deliver it," he said. "It should be at the very top of the political priority list," Deputy Cahill added vowing to "hammer this issue again and again in here until such time as it is delivered.”
Concerns were raised this week that issues from the recent Fossa road improvements, which caused problems due to narrow lanes, were not being considered for a similar major junction at the other side of Killarney town.
Plans have been put forward for a new six-metre road lane from Ballycasheen to Daly’s, despite ongoing difficulties in Fossa.
Danny Healy-Rae discussed the matter in the Dail on Wednesday.
He highlighted that the national primary road from the Cork side into Killarney, which uses Daly's roundabout and the old bypass, handles around 40,000 vehicles daily.
While the roundabout itself worked well, traffic queues often stretched
for miles from both the Cork Road and Tralee Road into Killarney.
The new plan also includes two cycleways and footpaths.
Crucially, the carriageway was to be narrowed to six metres. Healy-Rae argued this width was not enough for today's vehicles and believed the suggested €3 million cost would be much higher. Healy-Rae also noted that a similar project in Fossa involved narrowing the N72, the national secondary road. There, two large vehicles struggled to pass each other, often having to stop. He expressed serious concerns about applying such a design to the N22, a national primary road, at Ballycasheen. Before the project at Daly's roundabout went ahead requested that the Department of Transport review the project with officials.

The Heights Hotel has become a key sponsor of the Whitebridge Manor Defibrillator project.
The project was launched after a medical emergency in the area earlier this year.
Following Seán Óg O’Sullivan's sudden cardiac arrest at home, residents in Whitebridge Manor began fundraising for a publicly accessible defibrillator.
The Heights Hotel covered the entire cost of the defibrillator and its outdoor heated box, which is now installed in the centre of the estate.
The project, spearheaded by Seán Óg’s brother Gary, also raised over €4,600 through a GoFundMe campaign.
These additional funds will be divided equally among three organisations: Killarney Cardiac First Response Unit, The Michael Lenihan Heartsafe Campaign, and Brú Columbanus at Cork University Hospital.
Collette Andre O’Riordan, Managing Director of The Heights Hotel, recently
visited the new installation with Whitebridge residents. She stated the hotel’s commitment to the project extends to sponsoring community CPR and First Aid training by providing venue space and necessary equipment. The hotel also plans to host an awareness coffee morning soon to further support cardiac response and community preparedness.
“We are delighted to have been able to support such an important community led project,” said Collette. “The swift response from local residents shows the power of community spirit. We hope this inspires others across Killarney, Kerry, and beyond to prepare and train, because it truly can save lives.”
The Heights Hotel intends to continue supporting local initiatives and will host community cardiac training and awareness events in the coming months.
Saturday’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle will be officially started by a member of Paddy O’Donoghue’s family.
The late Paddy from Muckross was a founding member of the iconic event. Mr O’Donoghue, 81, passed away in early June following a road collision in Kilgarvan.
A retired Kerry County Council engineer known as 'Paddy the Engineer', he was a participant and fundraiser for the annual
charity cycle since its beginning in 1982. Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Cycle said: “He was a fantastic supporter of the annual charity cycle since it's inception back in the 80s. A regular participant and wonderful fundraiser for whatever charity he chose. Paddy loved a challenge in whatever he undertook and was the epitome of what the event was all about. We miss the banter and craic but he won't ever be forgotten. This year's event will be dedicated to his memory on July 5. His likes will never be seen again.”

The catering firm was awarded the Gold Medal for Club or Society Franchised Caterer of the Year at the inaugural Gold Medal Catering Awards.
The awards gala took place last week and recognised top caterers across Ireland. Truffle Honey stated this award celebrated their team’s dedication to providing good food, service, and hospitality at Killarney Golf Club.
The Gold Medal Catering Awards were created to highlight high standards in the Irish catering industry. They received over 150 entries in its first year, covering 20 categories including contract, healthcare, and events catering.
Entrants were judged through site assessments, mystery dining, and interviews by an independent panel.
Trish Murphy, Head of Sales and Sponsorships at Ashville Media said: “The calibre of entries in this first year was nothing short of incredible. We launched this programme with the intention of recognising true excellence in Irish catering, and I think we’ve already exceeded expectations. These winners haven’t just met the standard, they’ve set it.”
The Parish of Fossa is preparing to welcome a new spiritual leader with the announcement of Fr Noel Spring as its new Parish Priest.
This appointment is part of a series of changes made by Bishop Ray Browne within the Diocese of Kerry, set to take effect on July 16.
Fr Spring will be moving to Fossa from Castletownbere.
He will succeed Fr Niall Geaney, who is retiring from his role as Parish Priest of Fossa this year, having dedicated over
fifty years of service.
Bishop Browne said: "This year three priests retire. Each has ministered as a priest for fifty years and more. We thank God for their service. We wish them happiness, good health and every blessing in retirement. The great challenge is for priests and parishioners together to be in a position to have the fullness of parish life in all our parishes. Let us face that challenge with confidence.”
These new appointments across the Diocese of Kerry will become effective on Wednesday,
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland recently hosted an event celebrating cherished sporting memories in Killarney.
The event took place in Clann Housing, Coill na Darrach last Saturday where guests shared stories, photographs, and memorabilia. Attendees on the day included the newly elected Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady, John 'Don' O’Donoghue and Fr Anthony Dukes.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland memories initiative aims to harness the power
of sport to spark memories and create connections with people living with dementia.
John Don O'Donoghue, a joint organiser of the event, said these events are important for those who suffer with dementia. He added: "They offer people a meaningful way to reconnect, not just with their memories, but with each other. We’ve seen first-hand how powerful it can be when someone’s face lights up remembering a match, a goal, or a moment they thought was long forgotten.
Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is entering the final stretch of preparations as it gets set to host the European Amateur Team Championship from July 8–12 on its Killeen Course.
The championship returns to Killarney exactly 50 years after it was first held at the venue in 1975.
Sixteen national teams from across Europe will compete, with each team made up of six of the continent’s top amateur golfers.
This is the second time the championship has been held in Killarney, and the first time it has been staged in Ireland since 1997, when it was hosted at Portmarnock.
Ireland last won the event in 2008 and will be looking to use home advantage to challenge again this year.
Head Greenkeeper Enda Murphy added that the course has been fine-tuned to deliver true championship conditions, with particular focus on green speed, definition, and overall presentation. The championship format includes two rounds of stroke play, followed by three
rounds of match play to determine the winners. Past participants in the event include Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
Head Greenkeeper, Enda Murphy, said:
‘Preparing the Killeen Course for the European Amateur Team Championship has been both an exciting and, at times, a demanding process. Our goal has been to elevate every aspect of the course to true championship standard from the speed and consistency of the greens to the definition of all areas on the course.
We’ve invested a lot of time and effort to ensure that the course not only looks pristine but plays to the highest competitive expectations. We are proud of the results and can’t wait to see Europe’s best amateur players take on the course for this elite competition.’
The event will bring hundreds of visitors to the town and is expected to generate a strong boost for local tourism.
Minister of State Michael HealyRae TD visited Nagle Rice National School in Milltown last week to celebrate the school’s achievements in food education and environmental awareness.
Nagle Rice NS was recognised for its creativity and hands-on approach to the 2024 GIY SuperValu Let’s GROW programme, particularly through the development of its award-winning sensory garden, Tadhg’s Garden. During the visit, Minister Healy-Rae met with pupils, staff, and representatives from GIY, commending the school’s on-
going commitment and highlighting the importance of further initiatives like GIY’s Grow at School programme, which helps young people understand where food comes from and how they can positively shape their environment.
GIY are on a mission to secure a national food education initiative by securing funding to provide a garden-based programme in every primary school in Ireland. The aim is to embed practical food literacy and sustainability into the national education system, equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to make healthier and more environmentally conscious food choices.
Linden House, a designated centre for International Protection Seekers, has been the subject of an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).
The report indicates that Linden House demonstrated compliance across several key areas of care and operation.
Inspectors found that safeguarding and safety measures were in place, with residents feeling safe and staff aware of
reporting procedures for concerns. Individual assessment and care plans were in use and regularly reviewed, ensuring care was tailored to residents' needs. Residents' rights were upheld, allowing for choice and respecting privacy, with access to advocacy services available. Furthermore, the inspection noted good practices in food and nutrition, with residents enjoying meals and having choices. The workforce and staffing levels were found to be sufficient, with appropriate skills and training for staff.
The centre's facilities were also deemed clean, comfortable, and well-maintained.
However, the report identified areas requiring improvement, leading to partial compliance ratings in Governance and Management, Risk Management, and Fire Safety. Under Governance and Management, while overall oversight was good, the provider's system for implementing fire safety management and managing premises-related risks needed strengthening.
Regarding Risk Management, identified risks, particularly those linked to fire safety and the premises, were not always fully mitigated or reviewed effectively. The Fire Safety regulation specifically noted issues such as some fire doors not closing correctly. The report stated that the fire safety management system needed to be more robust to ensure all identified risks were addressed and reviewed. Linden House has since developed an action plan to address these issues.

With the 100-year anniversary of the opening of Killarney National Park – gifted to Killarney by the Bourn-Vincent and McShain families – scheduled for 2032, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce initiated a programme in 2023 to acknowledge that landmark occasion and to celebrate past and present links.
One of the highlights of this year’s programme, commencing at 5.00pm on Friday, July 4, will see the remarkable life story of John McShain, the man who built Washington and then went on to buy Killarney, re-enacted in word, music and song and by multi-media at the ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre.
The top class production, scripted by Noel P O’Sullivan and produced, directed and narrated by performing arts school owner Fiona Crowley, will chart the life and times of the McShain family, their time in Killarney and their very special legacy in the town.
Showcasing the finest of Killarney talent, the event will feature the magnificent voice of Mary Culloty O’Sullivan, the musical genius of Tomy Flaherty, the thought-provoking poetry of Tim Buckley and so much more.
A native of Philadelphia and the youngest son of Derry-born Catholic emigrants, construction tycoon John McShain was the main contractor in the $4.25 million reconstruction of the White House during
the Truman years, from 1949-1952. He was also responsible for the construction of the Pentagon, the Jefferson Memorial, the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, the JFK Centre for Performing Arts, Washington National Airport and many other notable US landmarks.
A regular visitor to Killarney with his wife Mary and their daughter, Sr Pauline, they acquired some magnificent properties, including Killarney House in the 1950s.
In 1973, the McShains gifted Innisfallen Island, Ross Castle and 8,000 acres of parkland, mountains and lake to the State and an agreement was reached that, when they passed on, Killarney House and Gardens would be given to the Irish Government for a nominal sum.
John McShain died in 1989 and when his wife, Mary, passed away in 1998, their daughter Pauline, a US based nun, carried out her father’s wishes and handed the keys and the deeds of the property to the people.

A group of Killarney classmates gathered at the International Hotel on Saturday to celebrate 60 years since their school days.
They travelled from Florida, Philadelphia, Galway, Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Kerry to mark the monumental occasion.
The former schoolmates attended Loreto Secondary School, a boarding school located on the Muckross Road, from 1960–1965. It was run by nuns and the school welcomed both day pupils and boarders. The day pupils were from Killarney and the boarders came from all around Munster.
Margaret O’Sullivan, a past pupil and one of the organisers of the reunion, reminisced on her time at the boarding school. “It could be lonely being away from family and friends,” she said, “but it was a happy time in our lives.” She remembered the nuns fondly, describing them as “lovely,” and spoke positively about the quality of both the lessons and the food.
The school principal was Mother Dererka. A few notable teachers included Mother Eucharia who taught French, Frances Jerome and Letitia (Music). Mother Theresa Austin and Mother Immaculata taught Maths. “The nuns were all called Mother” explained Margaret as she listed off the names of her old teachers. While the students were taught mostly by nuns there was one teacher, Miss O’Sullivan, who taught History and Geography.
The travel route to the school differed based on where the students lived in Killarney. Margaret recalled how the ‘town girls’ travelled to school. “It was by a minibus driven by a lovely man called
Denis Doody, and the Muckross and Torc gang all came via bike.”
She continued: “10 out of the 30 pupils in our year would have been Day girls. The Town/Muckross Torc girls at the Reunion were Betty Cremin, Breda Doody, Kathleen Horgan, Anne Maguire, Nell Moynihan, Honor O’Leary, Margaret O’Sullivan and Eileen Walsh.”
Margaret, who is originally from Killarney, got to experience the school in both ways as she attended as a boarder for two years. She explained that 20-30 students were in the same dormitory and all subjects were taught through Irish. She recalled some interesting memories
from the school. These included Saturday morning elocution lessons and inhouse fashion shows. The school also boasted a lovely choir. She described it as a very forward-thinking school.
Fifteen women attended the school reunion, including one who travelled from Florida and another from Philadelphia.
On the night, the ladies enjoyed prosecco, good food and a singsong, all while reminiscing about their happy school memories.
Explaining how the reunion came about, Margaret said it all began with a chance encounter in 2013:
“I was in Rome on the Hugh O’Flaherty
tour and happened to meet a lady at one of the destinations. It turned out to be a former classmate of mine, Ann Moriarty. We got chatting, and she said our 50year reunion was coming up in 2015. She asked would I organise something for it. She was a nun, based in the Loreto order in South Africa. I gathered a few of the girls in Killarney, and we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2015. We decided to do it again for our 60th this year.” Unfortunately, Ann passed away a few years ago but Margaret said that Ann was the reason for the reunion. The group hope to make it an annual meeting moving forward.

Start time: 11am
Kerry politicians are calling on Irish Rail to provide additional train services for supporters travelling to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-final.
Kerry is set to play Tyrone on Saturday, July 12, with a 5.00pm throw-in at Croke Park, Dublin.
Minister Michael Healy-Rae TD has urged Irish Rail to ensure sufficient capacity, particularly for return journeys after the match.
He cited the late finish time as a concern for fans needing to get home safely and conveniently.
Minister Healy-Rae stated he would raise this directly with Irish Rail to secure plans for adequate transport both to and from Dublin.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Michael Cahill and Councillor Tommy Cahill have also praised Kerry supporters for their turnout at the recent quarter-final win over Armagh.
They echoed calls for increased transport options for the semi-final.
The Cahills said they are actively working with Irish Rail and Kerry Airport.
This follows their previous successful engagement with Irish Rail for the Armagh quarter-final, which saw extra train services provided. Despite current train services to Dublin already being fully booked
for July 12, the Cahills are pressing Irish Rail for more trains from Kerry.
They are also exploring flight options, having submitted formal requests to Kerry Airport for additional flights.
Councillor Cahill referenced expected
heavy traffic on the M7 route on July 12 due to fans from Kerry, Limerick, and Kildare heading to Croke Park. He stated they are "flat out working behind the scenes" to ensure fans have travel options

CATEGORY: GROUP AWARDS | AWARD: COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR
Autism Friendly Killarney are a new volunteer group and their aim is to create a safe space for the autistic and neurodivergent community in the town. Volunteer Jessica O’Connor explains the formation of the group and how it has progressed over the past two years.
Kevin Leahy, the founder of the group, recognized a lack of support for neurodiverse and autistic members of the community in Killarney. He decided to reach out to AsIAm, Ireland’s Autism charity. This led him to create a volunteer committee in September 2023, a group which has continued to grow ever since.
The team is comprised of 16 volunteers who all work in different sectors of the community.
Healthcare workers, teachers, local councillors, business owners and parents of Autistic children are among the volunteers.
Jessica O’Connor is one of the volunteers and she explains: “The Autism Friendly program aims to promote awareness of the invisible barriers which affect the Neurodiverse and Autistic community in everyday life. These barriers are: Sensory environment, Predictability, Communication, and Societal attitudes and judgement.”
Jessica explains that the goal of the group is to ensure that everyone in the community is included and given the same opportunities to participate and
thrive.
The group has made significant progress since its formation just under two years ago. All festivals in Killarney town now provide inclusive spaces for autistic children. A dedicated sensory room was featured at the Wander Wild festival in March of this year. Similarly, Killarney library also had a sensory room throughout the month of April. Events have been held in schools to help promote awareness among school children.
When asked about when she noticed a positive impact from the initiative, Jessica recalled a touching moment: “An attendee at the Rally viewing event said it made her year to go to the rally with her son, it is the simple things that make a difference.”
The group has had many achievements, but their biggest one is seeing how comfortable families are attending events in the town. Jessica said that it is remarkable to be approached with
amazing ideas from local people and organisations with suggestions on how they can get involved. She said: “It is enlightening to know that people can now attend events such as the Bike Fest, Rally of the Lakes, and Christmas parades when they couldn’t before.”
Being nominated for this award is a powerful motivator for the group. It inspires them to continue to drive meaningful, tangible change within the community around inclusive practices. Jessica explains that the group is shifting its focus from Autism Awareness to Autism Acceptance, which is a vital step to ensure lasting, genuine change takes place.
Winning this award would mean the world to the organisation, a voluntary group that wants to make Killarney a better place for everyone who lives in and visits the town. Jessica explains: “Winning the award would propel our group further and faster while fostering even greater awareness, acceptance,
and accessibility.” The group’s goal is for true inclusivity, and she emphasised that with the support of organisations like Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber, it would allow them to expand more into summer 2025 and beyond.
She said: “We are already on the Irish Autism Map, but our Vision is to become the Number 1 reference point nationally.”
The group has high hopes for Killarney’s future as a true Autism Friendly town. They plan to do a lot more around social groups and inclusive employment as the next steps of their journey with AsIAm and the community of Killarney. The motivation behind the goal is that everyone has the same chance. New volunteers are always welcome in the group, and they love to hear new ideas. A website will be coming soon with all the necessary information for getting involved.

The new Mayor of Killarney is carrying on a great tradition with the tremendous service three generations of his family have given to the town.
That was the message from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce for the newly elected Cllr Martin Grady, who they met just days after his election to the top job.
Chamber Co-President Johnny McGuire, wished Cllr Grady every success in the years ahead and he acknowledged the dedication of his family to public office, to local politics and to community development down through the years.
“Martin’s late father, Donal, his uncle, Seán, and his grandfather, John, have held the chain of office before him and, in fact, it is the eighth time that one of the family has done so.
“It is great to see the family maintaining that great tradition of public service,” he said.
“Chamber wishes Martin every success in the role and we look forward to working with him on various projects over the next 12 months,” Mr McGuire added.
Meanwhile, Chamber has also paid tribute to outgoing mayor Maura Healy-Rae, with whom they had a very successful and mutually beneficial working relationship.
At a Chamber luncheon in the Great Southern Hotel, a presentation of a framed montage of photographs from her 12 months in office was made to Cllr Healy-Rae – also the third generation of her family to pursue a political involvement.
She said she thoroughly enjoyed the great working relationship she had with the town’s business community.
Four Esquires Productions are hosting four plays in Courtney’s Bar from Wednesday July 9 until Friday July 11.
The organisers say it is new material from new writers; the plays are described as a dark take on human behaviour with black humour.
The plays are:
The Fag: Think tensions arising in the smoking area.
Sam who?: A missing cup. A Garda investigation. Two dodgy lads in a hotel room. What could possibly go wrong?
The Black Bench: A chance encounter on a park bench leads to an interesting interaction.
Swiping and Punching: This piece shows the lows and highs of modern Irish online dating.
Four Esquires Productions had a successful tour on the short film festival circuit with their short film Two Halves which lead to national radio interviews. Not having a theatre doesn't stop the group from doing what they do best. Historically their shows always sell out due to limited capacity at their host venue in Courtney’s Bar, Tickets are available to purchase on Eventbrite for €12.50.
More than 30,000 (32,758) people are living in the Killarney Municipal District area.
That’s according to figures provided by the Central Statistics Office which were released recently.

Areas such as Knocknahoe (41) and Rathmore (39.5) were just above the national average. (38.5).
The average age of people living in Ker-
ry was 40.5 – the oldest in the country, along with Mayo.
Tahilla in Kerry was one of two electoral divisions nationally where the average age was above 50.
The Old Age Dependency Ratio in Kerry, which represents those aged 65 and over relative to the working-age population was 27%. This was notably higher than the state’s national average (22%).
The average age for women in the State was 39.0 years, one year higher than for men at 38.0. In all counties and cities, the average age for women was higher than for men.
Booking my flight to Ireland was the easy part. It was deciding when to come home – that was tricky. I firmly believe that timing is everything and everything falls into place when it’s supposed to. What’s for you won’t pass you, as they say. I knew I wanted to give it six months before coming home again. I felt that was the right amount of time to wrap up such a big chapter of my life. I knew it would give me just enough time to tie up any loose ends. Mainly catching up with friends and seeing new places. When I shared my news to friends and colleagues in Australia, I pretty much expected the reaction I got. Nobody shared my enthusiasm, instead I was met with a lot of confusion. “Why?” was the most common question. That was reasonable to ask. It was always quickly followed by a “You’ll regret it.” which I felt was bizarre to say. Nobody, not even I, could be so sure of a statement (Spoiler alert: I don’t!). Being at home and having a built-in support system around you is unmatched, no matter where you are in the world. It’s never quite the same anywhere else. I knew my close friend was planning a holiday to Sydney in May so I arranged my flights around her and planned it so that we could fly home together. I knew I’d need a travel companion. I booked my flight in February, and the countdown was on! I couldn’t wait. I kept waiting for a moment where I might change my mind (seeing as everybody else was so certain that I would). I just got more excited with every passing day. In fact, sometimes if I got too overwhelmed with life in Australia, I used to consider changing to an earlier flight. Many a day I spent ringing the travel agent trying to change it! I look back and laugh at it now, the image of me on the phone multiple times a week trying to change my flight. I was just ready to
come home, but again, I knew I needed the full six months before leaving again. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut.
The flight home went as smoothly as it could once I got through security. (That whole fiasco!) Normally I really enjoy a long-haul flight. I love switching off and disconnecting from the outside world but this time around I was feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves, two emotions that don’t normally go very well together. The fear of the unknown. But that’s always the most exciting part of a new adventure.
It went smoothly once I landed in Dublin. I was thrilled because my aunt collected
me from the airport, so I didn’t have to make the 3-hour journey down to Kerry immediately. She gave me a lovely Irish fry up, made up the spare bedroom and I went straight into the leaba and slept for about 15 hours – no joke! I woke up the next morning at 7am and felt great. I went for a nice walk with the dog that morning and I never felt more content. Afterwards, we had a lovely lunch and a catch up in town, and then it was time for the next leg of the journey – the train home.
Funnily enough once I got to Heuston, I decided to stop off at the shop for a few minutes and bumped into one of my good college friends that I hadn’t seen in
2 years! It was a lovely surprise. I hopped on the train, made the journey home and rolled into Rathmore train station where I was greeted by my family with a welcome home sign and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers!
My first week at home was so much fun. I was babysitting my nephew for a few days. Although I spoke to him on Facetime almost every day, I was excited to spend some quality time with him. We played games, watched movies and walked the dog – the perfect way to ease back into life at home. By the end of my first week I started my new job, moved in home and settled back into my life like I never left. The timing was just right.
The recent Art School Showcase and Student Exhibition was a celebration of creativity, talent, and community support.
Held on Friday June 27 the event brought together students, faculty, families, and art lovers from across the Kerry to witness a display of artistic excellence.
Over fifteen Art Students exhibited along with their teachers, Tracy Cronin, Ciara Dorgan and Mari Rolin. Each piece told a unique story, reflecting months of
dedication, exploration, and personal growth. The exhibition was a resounding success, highlighting the passion, skill, and vision of the creative community in Killarney.
"I am deeply proud of our students. Their passion, courage, and commitment to creative exploration continually inspire me. We are very grateful to provide a space in Killarney where people can come to learn, develop art skills, express themselves, reflect and connect." said Tracy Cronin.

The Government’s decision to hike student fees by €1,000 will add to the rising emigration of young people.
That’s the view of multiple politicians and students as a recent announcement by the Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless sparked major outrage across the country. Minister Lawless recently revealed that third level fees would rise by €1,000 in the budget this year. Over the past three years, college fees were reduced by €1,000 per annum as part of a cost-ofliving package introduced by the Government. It comes as reports suggest that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are divided on the issue that has caused severe controversy throughout the week. Opposition parties in the Dail condemned the announcement. Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty said that “it’s no wonder that
young people are leaving the country in droves.” Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan asked how the Government can credibly look at students and families in the face after breaking their election promises while Labour leader Ivana Bacik said the party is organising a protest outside of Leinster House next week and invited Government members to attend.
Kerry Sinn Féin TD Deputy Pa Daly described the announcement as a scandalous slap in the face. He added that the hike represented the latest example of a government that has abandoned young people and remains completely out of touch when it comes to understanding the financial pressures ordinary workers and families are under. Deputy Daly said: “The brutal reality of the choices this government is taking will be to force more and more young people onto the next plane out of here to Australia or
Canada.” Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill said he intends to raise the issue with Minister Lawless and said every student should have the right to undertake a college degree or diploma in their chosen field in professions and trades and should not be held back by onerous fees. Meanwhile, Daithi Fitzgerald, a postgraduate student, called the reversal “another calculated attack on young people”. He said: “It doesn’t just hurt students; it drives young people away from politics entirely.” He believes young people are being pushed to emigrate as they face mounting costs including high car insurance and being locked out of home ownership. He called for the government to deliver a comprehensive costof-living package in the next budget to support young people and families. He added: “Yet again, this is a government leaving students behind.”
President Michael D Higgins led the tributes to Brother Kevin by acknowledging the “invaluable difference” he made to life in Dublin.
The Capuchin Day Centre has provided essential services like hot meals, clothing, and showers to homeless people in Dublin since 1969.
He described Brother Kevin as a warm, caring, yet fearless man, who dedicated his life to living his Christian faith in dedication to those most in need.
Archbishop of Dublin Dermot Farrell
offered his sympathy to Brother Kevin’s family and said that his work transformed the lives of the poor. His statement said: "He was always able to see Christ in the people he met. His was a love that reached out with no questions asked of those who sought assistance”
The Lord Mayor of Dublin also paid tribute to Brother Kevin’s lifelong service to
Trump slams NYC mayoral candidate labelling him “a communist”
President Donald Trump has publicly slammed the Democrats mayoral candidate in New York City.
President Trump branded Zohran Mamdani a “communist” on multiple occasions this week. He called him “terrible” and “bad news”, adding that he “would have fun with him” if he was elected Mayor. When asked about Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy, President Trump claimed the Government would be watching his residency status “very carefully” after suggesting the possibility of Mamdani living in America illegally. He claimed: “Right now he is a communist.” President Trump also threw insults at Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), who is supporting Mamdani, and said she was “ranting and raving about how wonderful he is” with “her bad IQ”. In response to President Trump’s statements, the New York mayoral candidate said that Trump’s statement doesn’t just represent an attack on democracy, but it is “an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who hides in the shadows” He warned: “If you speak up, they will come for you.” He said he refused to be intimidated by the remarks made by the president. Zohran Mamdani has been a US citizen since 2018.
the people of Dublin. He said Brother Kevin was a beacon of kindness, dignity and quiet strength, adding “He met need with generosity, hardship with humanity, and always treated every person who came through the door as an equal.” Pope Francis met with Brother Kevin on his visit to Ireland in 2018 and met with volunteers past and present.
111 fixed charged notices have been issued to learner drivers in Kerry so far this year.
The figures were provided by the Minister for Justice and Equality Jim O’Callaghan in a response to a parliamentary question posed by Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly.
Nationally, there’s been over 4,700 (4,707) fixed charged notices given to learner permit holders.
Minister O’Callaghan also revealed that 223 fines were issued in 2024, a hike in comparison to 173 in 2023.
In total, 560 fines were handed out to
learner drivers in Kerry over the past two years.
The Road Safety Authority states that learner permit holders who drive unaccompanied may receive a Fixed Charge Notice and a fine of €160 along with two penalty points. If determined by a court, four penalty points may be issued. It comes as the RSA recently revealed that they are on target to reduce driving test wait times to 10 weeks by September.
The RSA have introduced new measures to increase testing capacity by training new testers and extending testing times.

Award winning actress Fiona Shaw is the recipient of this year’s Maureen O’Hara Award.
Kerry International Film Festival will honour the renowned actress at this year’s award ceremony, taking place in October.
The Maureen O'Hara Award was established in 2008 and was one of the first awards of its time to solely award women who have excelled in the Film and Television industries.
The inaugural winner was actress Brenda Fricker, and a variety of women both behind and in front of the camera have been awarded throughout the years.
Fiona Shaw is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest actors.
Notable performances by the actress include the Harry Potter series, My Left Foot, Killing Eve and Fleabag
Fiona Shaw said she is thrilled to receive the award and paid tribute to Maureen O’Hara by describing her as limitless
both on and off screen. She said: “She took on studio sexism despite knowing it would limit her career, I adore Maureen. It puts me in great company, women who have played a blinder, both in front of and behind the camera.”
Irish Qantas customers are being urged to stay vigilant following a data breach at the airline.
According to recent reports, six million people worldwide have been affected by the breach.
The incident occurred through a third-party customer service platform used by a Qantas contact centre, according to CNN.
CNN said the exposed data reportedly includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and frequent flyer numbers.
There is no evidence that credit card,
passport, or other financial data was compromised.
ESET Ireland is advising consumers to be careful of links or sharing any sensitive data with unknown contacts.
George Foley of ESET Ireland said the airline industry is currently being targeted by criminal hackers using sophisticated social engineering tactics, often by verbally impersonating employees or contractors to steal credentials.
He added: “The industry must tighten its security and heighten awareness, and the public also needs to remain mindful of phishing emails or text messages claiming to be from legitimate sources.”
The Irish Naval ship L.É. William Butler Yeats was on patrol in the area at the time. A Maritime patrol aircraft from the Irish Air Corps provided overhead surveillance during the operation.
Two Naval Service rigid-hulled inflatable boats were launched from the ship and intercepted the suspect RIB off the coast of Cork.
The suspect RIB was detained by Revenue Customs Service and the two males were taken on board the L.É. William Butler Yeats.
A post office in one of Kerry’s busiest tourist towns has been saved from the threat of closure by the appointment of a new postmaster.
The contract to run Dingle Post Office has been awarded to Niall Kelleher, a native of Rathmore and now living in Killarney, who already operates a busy post office business at Fair Hill, Killarney. He takes up the Dingle role from July 1 and the PO is based at Fitzgerald’s HomeValue Store on Main Street.
The previous operator, Eileen Fitzgerald, had tendered her resignation to An Post and the contract was advertised on two occasions before An Post approached Mr Kelleher.
The previous occupant agreed with An Post to a short transition period to facilitate the successful applicant with the existing premises should they wish to avail of it.
Niall Kelleher comes from a family that is steeped in the business of running a post office as his mother, Julie, has been the postmistress in both Rathmore and Millstreet since 2015.
He opened the post office branch at Fair Hill, Killarney in March 2023 and it has been a big hit with customers, offering a
very important and accessible service to a huge population on the eastern side of Killarney.
The new Dingle Postmaster, who has been a member of Kerry County Council since 2014, said the post office has a vital role to play, particularly in rural communities.
“It is a significant responsibility to operate a post office but, very often, it is one of the last commercial lights remaining switched on in many communities,” he said.
“Dingle is a thriving, attractive place where the population multiplies dramatically in the summer months and a town of its stature and importance most certainly deserves its own post office,” he added.
The post office, which will open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.30pm and from 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays, has been located at the rear of Fitzgerald’s HomeValue Store since 2007.
It is understood that the post office is likely to move to a new location in a number of months.

Philip Crickard (Ardfert) on fiddle and mandolin.
Crickard, originally from Carrickfergus and a long-time resident of Kerry, is well known on the local music circuit. He and O’Shea have performed together in Ireland, the US, and Germany.
The concerts aim to promote traditional music and provide a platform for new and emerging artists from Killarney and beyond.
West End House hosted the third annual Donie Courtney memorial showcase last week.
The event was attended by Donie’s wife, Adeline O’Brien, and his niece Jessica Leen, who is the Creative Director of West End House. Jessica recently announced her departure from the role after three years. Students from teen and adult acting classes took to the stage with excerpts from plays they have been working on for the past ten-week term. These included monologues and scenes from Donie Courtney's own Youth The-
atre play For Whom We Deliver. Jessica delivered a fond farewell message to everyone in attendance on the night sharing the importance of the showcase and what it represents. She said that Donie loved showcases, so they named it in his honour. She added: "The tutors at West End House are the backbone of what we do and who we are, but it is the students that are the heart of it. I'm so proud of every single person who comes through these doors to bravely take on a new creative challenge, whether for a dream or hobby or whatever else.”

The notion that there is a widespread cost of living crisis in Ireland is not true, apart from a small percentage of people who are suffering, a leading economist has told Killarney’s business community.
Danny McCoy, chief executive of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation, said there is a need to take a look at the world as it is and not what people imagine it to be.
“There are people suffering in our society but what proportion of them we can only speculate on,” he said.
“It’s certainly not 50 per cent and I don’t believe it to be 20 per cent but I’m willing to leave it at 20 per cent which means 80 per cent don’t have a problem,” he told a Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce members’ lunch.
Mr McCoy said, despite the fact that the other 80 per cent are not impacted, there are still blanket calls for energy credits for everybody.
“It’s not even sophisticated enough to limit it to every household. People without an ESB metre are receiving that money as well as people with second homes. The actual disproportionate nature and equality of it continues,” he remarked.
The IBEC chief told the gathering in the Great Southern Hotel that, the previous night, Irish householders had €160 billion on deposit in the Irish banking system.
“That’s cash – that’s not their wealth. That’s their readies. There is no heavy debt,” he said.
Mr McCoy said financial institutions are frustrated trying to lend money and he described the current credit union and banking system as being like a library where people now come to bring books and not take them out.
“This is the reality in Ireland. We have seen a surge in our population which is great news, we are a rich society which is great news but what we are doing with the money is that we’re blowing it on conspicuous consumption right against the point where we are seeing this need for infrastructure in its widest sense,” he remarked.
The leading economist, who spearheads the country’s largest business representative organisation and lobbying group, told the gathering of over 80 business leaders that it’s now very difficult to actually identify a region globally that hasn’t employment rates near record levels.
That, however, also has implications for attracting talent which is very critical to the Killarney region in terms of business and tourism.
What is domestic abuse?
If a partner or an ex makes you feel scared, controlled or intimidated, you may be experiencing domestic abuse. There are many different forms of abuse. It can be physical or it can be emotional, and it may have impacts that can or cannot be seen by other people.
Abuse can happen to anyone at any age and in any type of relationship. It can happen to adults and it can happen to teenagers. You don't have to be married or living with your partner for them to act abusively towards you.
What are the types of abuse people experience?
An abusive relationship is where one person uses abuse to control and have power over their partner in an intimate relationship. Types of abuse include:
• Physical abuse
• Emotional abuse
• Online abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Economic (financial) abuse
• Digital abuse
Coercive control is another type of abusive behaviour. This is when a boyfriend or girlfriend, partner, husband or wife, or ex uses an ongoing pattern of controlling, coercive and threatening behaviours to trap the person in a relationship. A person experiencing coercive control may also change their routines and lose contact with family and friends. Coercive
control can make it impossible or even dangerous to leave an abusive relationship.
What are my options if I am in an abusive relationship??
Recognising that you are being abused is an important step. You may feel you need time to think about your situation. Or perhaps you have already made up your mind to end the relationship or to leave. Whatever you decide, your safety (and that of your children if there are children) is always the priority. If you are being subjected to abuse by a current or former partner, you can get legal protection through the courts. The main kinds of protection available are safety, protection and barring orders. If you are experiencing domestic violence or abuse, you can apply for a:
What do each of the domestic violence court orders cover?
A Safety Order is an instruction from the court which stops the person accused of abusive behaviour (the respondent) from committing further violence or threats of violence. The respondent does not have to leave the home. If the person is not living with you, the safety order prohibits (bans) them from watching or being near your home and following or communicating (including electronically) with you or a dependent person such as a child. A safety order can last up to 5 years.
People in an intimate relationship are also able for apply for a safety order. Previously, couples had to cohabit (live together) to be able to get a safety order, but this is no longer the case.
A Barring Order is a full or long-term order from the court. It directs the respondent to leave - or stay away fromyour home and any dependent children. In some cases, it can direct them to stop using - or threatening to use - violence against you or putting you in fear. It may also direct them to stop following you, or communicating verbally or electronically with you or dependent children.
It can only be issued to current spouses or civil partners, or certain people who have an equal or greater ownership rights in the home than the respondent. Parents can apply when the abuser is a non-dependent child
While you are waiting for the court to decide on your application for a Safety or Barring Order, the court can give you an immediate temporary order called a Protection Order or an Interim Barring Order
A Protection order has the same effect as a Safety Order but because it is only intended to last until the court decides on your case, it is temporary. An interim Barring Order lasts for a maximum of 8 days working days
What is Domestic violence leave?
Since 27 November 2023, you have a legal right to 5 days of paid domestic vi-
olence leave, if you need to take time off work because of domestic violence and abuse. This could be for medical visits, legal proceedings, counselling, looking for other accommodation or accessing domestic violence services. The leave can be taken where you are directly experiencing domestic violence and abuse, or where you are supporting a ‘relevant person’. A ‘relevant person’ can be your:
• Spouse or civil partner
• Someone you live with
• Someone you are in an intimate relationship with
• Child who is under 18
• Another dependent person
Are you concerned about someone you know?
You can take some basic steps to help and support a friend, family member, colleague, neighbour or anyone who confides in you that they are experiencing domestic abuse. You can offer emotional support, and you can offer practical support. There are a number of support organisations and supports. Womens Aid have a national freephone helpline 1800 341 900 available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Men’s Development Network operates the National Male Advice Line on 1800 816 588 for men experiencing or who have experienced domestic violence.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, memories are treasures no one can steal we laugh, we talk, we play the part, but behind it all, lie our broken hearts
Some may forget you, now that you are gone, but we will remember you no matter how long.
As we loved you, so we miss you, In our memory you are near. Loved, remembered, longed for always. Bringing many a silent tear. Thomas, you are forever in our thoughts and prayers.
Love always from Dad, Mom, Jack, Danny, Michael, Laura and Leona.

God, our Father, we thank you for giving us Carlo, a model of life for young people, and a message of love for all. Receive his prayer for us. Look especially upon the poor, whom he loved and helped. Grant me, through his intercession, the grace that I need (mention your intention), to the glory of your name. Many feared that Kerry’s campaign would come to an end on Sunday last but Jack O’Connor and co. made a monumental stand to beat the favourites and defending champions Armagh by eight points in the All-Ireland quarter-final.
The superb performance and resounding result signalled a vindication for the experienced manager, his coaches, and his players – but they know they have only won the battle, not the war.

And ‘war’ is the appropriate word in these circumstances because next on the agenda is a semi-final match-up with Tyrone, formidable opponents who almost always raise their standards when the green and gold comes into view. The Red Hand prevailed against the Dubs on Saturday. They will fancy their chances against Kerry too. Make no mistake about it.
The last four tie has been fixed for Croke Park on Saturday, July 12 at 5pm. The
curtain raiser will be the Tailteann Cup final between Limerick and Kildare (2.30pm). Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster.
Donegal and Meath will contest the other All-Ireland semi-final on the Sunday (4pm) after both sides successfully navigated their respective quarters against Monaghan and Galway.
On Saturday, Jim McGuinness’ Ulster champions came back from seven points down at half-time to beat the
Farney by 1-26 to 1-20 with impressive midfielder Michael Langan bagging 1-3. The Royals came out the right side of a ding-dong affair on the Sunday as Jordan Morris played a key role in a 2-16 to 2-15 win. Robbie Brennan’s side have now defeated Dublin, Kerry and Galway – the three counties with the most football All-Irelands – in the 2025 championship.
Donegal v Meath will be part of a double header with the All-Ireland Junior final throwing in at 1.30pm.
The result was a vindication but they know they have only won the battle, not the war.
Kerry 0 - 32 | Armagh 1 - 21
CROKE PARK
The haters were out in force all week, giddily writing the Kingdom off.
A busted flush. A spent force. A one-man team.
Afraid of Ulster. Shy of talent. Lacking nous.
No midfield.
No bottle.
No fans.
No chance.
Kerry were the underdogs in this game (perhaps for the first time since 2019) but on this showing it might be a while before they get that billing again.
Jack O'Connor's men roared to a fully deserved eight-point victory against the reigning champions Armagh in Croke Park on Sunday, and the heavily scrutinised Kerry crowd roared with them all the way.
Seánie O’Shea blessed all in attendance with a performance for the ages but it would be wrong to focus on any one individual. This was a heroic team performance from 1 to 15 and beyond, one that opens up a world of possibilities for this revitalised group of players.
The signs were there early on that Kerry were out to prove a point, although as promising as they were in certain aspects of their game, they were coughing up far too many goal chances and easy scores
for comfort.
O’Shea was swinging over beauties to beat the band – he had 0-8 in the first half – but some of his side’s good work was undone in the 29th minute when a poor error from a short kickout allowed Rory Grugan to steal in and bury the ball past Shane Ryan.
That gave Armagh their first lead of the game but O’Shea responded like the leader he is with a brilliant solo effort and a wonderful two-pointer to edge Kerry back out in front.
Dylan Geaney popped over Kerry’s 13th point after some patient build-up play, but Armagh finished the half in the ascendancy with a two-point free from Ethan Rafferty and a score after the hooter by Joe McElroy.
Half-time: Kerry 0-13 Armagh 1-11.
The Orchard County bagged four of the first five scores of the second period –including one two-point free by Rian O’Neill – and the tipsters who backed Armagh to be too strong for a wounded, injury-hit Kerry outfit looked to be on the money.
Few could have sensed what was to

come. Despite effectively fielding a second-string midfield in Seán O’Brien and Mark O’Shea, the Kingdom completely dismantled Armagh’s kickout, scoring 14 points in 15 totally devastating minutes. It was vintage stuff from the underdogs as O’Brien and O’Shea came to the fore, complemented by the industrious AllStar contender Joe O’Connor. Spectacular two-pointers by O’Shea (off his left) and the human highlight reel David Clifford got the crowd on their feet. This was Kerry football at its electrifying best.
The Munster champions went from five down in the 41st minute to nine up in the 56th. The run ended with Graham O’Sullivan justifying his selection in the forwards by dropping over his second of the day.
When Andrew Murnin’s low goal attempt was deflected narrowly wide by Jason Foley at the other end, it really felt like it was going to be Kerry’s day.
The boys in green and gold managed the game cleverly and in a composed fashion thereafter, running down the clock with long periods of possession that were interrupted only by points by the hugely influential impact sub Micheál Burns and, fittingly, Man of the Match O’Shea.
Kerry became the first team ever to break the thirty-point barrier in Croke Park without scoring a goal – and they
did it against the reigning All-Ireland champions.
A royal flush. A coming force. A proper team.
Afraid of no one. Abundant talent. Ample nous.
Strong midfield.
Serious bottle.
Adoring fans.
Every chance.
Who knows what will happen next. Another challenge awaits in the All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone. But one thing is clear: the haters don't know ball.
KERRY: Shane Ryan; Paul Murphy, Jason Foley, Dylan Casey; Brian Ó Beaglaoich 0-2, Gavin White 0-2, Tom O’Sullivan; Seán O’Brien, Mark O’Shea; Joe O’Connor 0-2, Seánie O’Shea 0-12 (3 x 2pt, 2f), Graham O’Sullivan 0-2; David Clifford 0-7 (2 x 2pt), Conor Geaney, Dylan Geaney 0-1. Subs: Evan Looney for Tom O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford 0-2 for Conor Geaney, Micheál Burns 0-2 for Mark O’Shea, Dara Moynihan for Burns (temp), Killian Spillane for Dylan Geaney, Tomás Kennedy for Graham O’Sullivan, Tom Leo O’Sullivan for Casey (temp).
ARMAGH: Ethan Rafferty 0-2 (1 x 2ptf); Paddy Burns, Barry McCambridge, Peter McGrane; Ross McQuillan, Tiernan Kelly 0-1, Jarlath Óg Burns 0-2 (1 x 2pt); Niall Grimley, Ben Crealey; Darragh McMullan 0-1, Rory Grugan 1-0, Joe McElroy 0-2; Oisín Conaty 0-6 (1 x 2pt), Andrew Murnin, Rian O’Neill 0-6 (1 x 2ptf, 1f). Subs: Conor Turbitt for Burns (temp), Jason Duffy for Grimley, Turbitt for McQuillan, Aidan Forker for Kelly, Cian McConville 0-1 for Crealey, Shane McPartlan for Grugan, Callum O’Neill for Murnin.
Eamonn Fitzgerald was greatly impressed by Kerry players and management in their spectacular victory against Armagh
I didn’t expect this big upset for the reigning All-Ireland champions, who were left reeling as Kerry shot an unbelievable 32 points in a clear-cut win. Such was the awful defeat away to Meath, a solid if unspectacular improvement versus Cavan in the Fitzgerald Stadium, and the toll of injuries, I was not confident of Kerry defeating Armagh. I was hopeful that Kerry would be Kerry in Croker and lift their game, but the odds favoured Armagh.
In last week’s prediction, I wrote: ‘My heart says Kerry, but on this occasion, the head says Armagh. I expect that the winners of Armagh v Kerry will win the All-Ireland 2025’.
I stick with that, hoping there will be no more injuries and that some of the injured players will be back to full fitness. One step at a time, next Tyrone, and then hopefully a green and gold final. Meath will be no pushover as they showed against Galway, who were shellshocked once again in Croke Park. Their hopes of silverware were blown asunder, the same fate experienced so often by luckless Mayo. There is a lot to play for yet, especially against Tyrone on the weekend after next.
I had hoped that Emergency Ward 10 would provide Paudie Clifford and Paul Geaney to start. They didn’t. This was a wonderful team effort but there were some standout ingredients Firstly, the brilliant Seán O’Shea scored 12 points. We saw a series of brilliant top drawer saves by Shane Ryan, who was brilliant between the posts. He diverted several goal-bound shots, and he did so well in varying the kickouts so that the big Armagh midfielders were by-passed. The leadership of captain Gavin White was crucial. He anchored the team and gave an All-Star performance throughout, solidifying the defence so the expected avalanche through the middle never materialised. He also soloed upfield to score two points.
Ó Beaglaoich and Paul Murphy did what we know they can do, cutting off the dangerous Armagh forwards. Rian O’Neill was curtailed to just three points from play. Tom O’Sullivan had to go off injured in the 23rd minute, and in came the inexperienced Evan Looney. His only other game time at senior level was a short cameo against Cavan. To be thrown in versus Armagh after
23 minutes was a daunting task, but it did not faze him. He played his part in this victory as he did in that Man of the Match award-winning Munster U20 final against Cork in Tralee in 2023.
The midfield trio of Seán O’Brien, Joe O'Connor, and Mark O’Shea, nominally at wing forward, did so well, where one expected it to be Kerry's Achilles heel.
Joe O'Connor had a quiet first half but came with a good second half. O’Shea also did so well on his big day while O’Brien played his part.
In the first half, David Clifford did not dominate as one might have expected but he shone in that second half.
Kerry may depend on David Clifford and Seán O’Shea to provide the big scores in the drive for Sam but there was a good spread from others on Sunday.
One must also credit the smart and timely decisions of the much-maligned Jack O’Connor and his selectors.
They made the brave decision to send the inexperienced (at this level) Evan
Looney on for the injured Tom O’Sullivan. The piece de resistance was springing Paudie Clifford and Micheál Burns into second-half action. This duo transformed the Kerry attack, heralding that 15-minute scoring blitz. It wasn’t just the 0-2 that each scored from play, but it was the injection of spirited play, chomping at the bit and becoming great score-makers that caught the eye.
Jack O’Connor hit out at his critics, showing that this Kerry team is not just a one-man show. Well done to all concerned with this magnificent display.
KERRY MINORS
Best of luck to the Kerry minor football team in their All-Ireland final versus Tyrone in Newbridge on Sunday. An All-Ireland win at minor level is long overdue, going back to the five-in-a-row era of 2014 to 2018.
Kerry manager Wayne Quillinan has stated that this squad may not have brilliant individuals, rather he has a panel of
honest-to-goodness team players who blend together as a team with a never-say-die spirit, which has taken them through to this All-Ireland final.
“Jesus, I'm buzzing,” the Tralee man said after the semi-final. “I see managers sometimes, and they're after reaching All-Ireland finals, and they're not all happy. Jesus, I'm not going to be like that, it's fantastic for those guys, we've another two weeks with them, it's just another great two weeks to look forward to. I know the challenge, I know Tyrone, I know all of that, but do you know what, not tonight, we'll worry about all of that tomorrow.”
They may well have ridden on their luck and had it all to do in the semi-final against Mayo, winning 1-19 to 3-10. This went down to the buzzer as Kerry snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and they will need all the same unyielding spirit against Tyrome, Kerry’s nemesis, especially at minor and U20s levels in those humiliating defeats of
recent years. Of course, the same two counties will meet at senior level in their semi-final.
The Kerry defence has been very impressive even though they conceded three goals to Mayo. Players from local clubs are performing very well. Danny Murphy (Listry) and Marcus Clifford (Firies) are key wing backs playing well. In attack, Dr Crokes duo Mark O’Carroll and Ben Kelliher are very much to the fore. Indeed, in the pulsating semi-final, prolific marksman Kelliher was the top scorer. He registered 0-9 (2f, 1 x 2ptf). He is already an All-Ireland winner in pitch and putt and will be hoping to sign a match-winning scorecard versus Tyrone.
Other local players on the bench are David McCarthy (Listry), Liam O’Brien (Glenflesk), Dylan O'Meara (Fossa) and Seán Kiely (Dr Crokes). The captain of this promising team is Gearóid White from John Mitchels wearing the number 11 geansaí.
I still maintain that it is an awful pity that the minor games are not played as curtain raisers to the senior games. What a thrill that always was for the young players, their proud parents and their home clubs. Apart from those following with close interest, not that many supporters will travel to Newbridge.
There will be nothing easy versus Tyrone, but maybe the minors can show the way for the seniors.
One’s heart goes out to the O'Callaghan family of Rockfield on the untimely passing of Isabelle O’Callaghan, who left this world so suddenly participating in the sport she loved so well from a very early age. She was a brilliant teenage show jumper, proven at shows all over Ireland. Comhbhrón ó bhun mo chroí to Eamon, Deirdre, James, the extended O’Callaghan family, friends, and her fellow
students in St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School. Brón ar an mbás’ sé dubh bhúr gcroíthe. Leaba i measc na Naomh, Isabelle,
The Kerry ladies will meet Kildare in the TG4 All-Ireland quarter-final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee tomorrow (Saturday) with a throw-in time of 7.30pm. The All-Ireland champions who won the coveted Brendan Martin Cup in 2024 after a 31-year famine, have done so well this year with a much-changed team due to retirements and the move of Kayleigh Cronin to play with Adelaide. The
new management has done very well, and I expect Kerry to win tomorrow and most likely meet Meath in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Kerry LGFA got a great boost in Banagher last week when the U16 A team defeated Cavan 4-11 to 0-18. Cavan were going for three in a row of All-Ireland titles. Conditions were difficult for both sides, but credit both sets of dynamic teenagers. Top scorer for Kerry was Jessie Lynch with 2-10.
KERRY: C O’Mahony, N O’Connor, A Brosnan, S Lyons, A Doyle, E Dillane, S Flynn, L Griffin (C), E O’Sullivan, J Lynch, J O’Connor, I Wynton, N Murphy, L Riordan, K Cummins. Subs: S O’Halloran for I Wynton, D O’Neill for N Murphy, S O’Shea for K Cummins.
One must also credit the smart and timely decisions of the muchmaligned Jack O’Connor and his selectors.
Kerry FC manager Colin Healy has signed his own son, Arran, from Cork City ahead of a crucial run of games in the League of Ireland First Division.
Healy (20) plies his trade mainly in the centre of midfield. The young Cork man started his playing career with Blarney before moving to the Cork City Academy in 2018. He came up through the ranks at Turner’s Cross and made his senior debut in 2023 during the club’s Munster Senior Cup campaign.
In 2024, he found some regular game time in the First Division and featured for Cork City in all four games against Kerry FC during their title-winning season.
Healy has made 22 appearances for Cork City, so he has plenty of experience in a squad currently in the Premier Division of Irish football. He will wear the number 35 shirt for Kerry FC.
“I’m delighted to be here in Kerry,” Healy told KerryFC.com. “I’m looking forward to getting started with new teammates, and it’s a new challenge for me here.
I’ve had a great time in Cork since I was 13, but now it’s a new chance and hopefully some first-team football down here as well. I’m looking forward to putting on the green jersey in Mounthawk Park. I was down here a couple of times with Cork, and I can see how passionate the supporters are here, so I can’t wait to get
going now.”
His father and now manager Colin said: “I’m obviously delighted that he’s here. It’s a great opportunity for him. It shows the path the club are choosing to go down, bringing in young, hungry players who want to fight for everything. He had a great upbringing in the Cork City Academy, which I’m really thankful for. There are some great people in Cork City and in the Academy there as well, and they’ve guided him along the right path. Since making the senior setup in Cork, he found game time somewhat limited, so now is the right time to come down here. The want for first-team football and minutes is important to young players, and hopefull he will get that experience here.
“I just want to say a massive thanks to everyone in Cork who brought him this far.”
Kerry are in LOI action tonight (Friday) at home to league leaders Dundalk. Kick-off at Mounthawk Park is at 7.45pm.
A large crowd gathered at Kilcummin GAA on Sunday evening to welcome back the club’s U15 team and their supporters who travelled to Derry for the John West National Féile Peile.
It was a long weekend for the Kilcummin contingent, who brough four buses to their base in Letterkenny on Friday and stayed up in Ulster for two days.
Competing in Group 1 alongside Derry side Ballinascreen and Down champions Clonburr, the lads knew that only two victories would secure a cup semi-final. At 11am on Saturday morning, as Eamon O’Donoghue collected the first throw in, the action began in earnest against a very game Derry side who proved more than a handful. After a number of attacks it was Daragh Keane who opened the scoring with a free into a tricky wind, before Callum Scullion tied up matters.
Derry O’Gorman was prominent throughout the first half and he popped up for a well taken score to give Kilcummin a
0-2 to 0-1 lead at the break. Aidan Huggard ensured a fast start to the second half with a pointed effort from 30 yards as Kilcummin began to get the better of exchanges. Scullion pegged it back to a point with his second score before a Darragh Keane brace had Kilcummin 0-5 to 0-2 ahead. The Kerry side had to withstand a late penalty effort Ballinascreen which they failed to convert as Kilcummin secured the win.
Clonburr were the opposition in Round 2, a club which actually put paid to the chances of the team of 1992, and sides served up a cracker of an opening half. Shea Murray found the net for the Down team but a quick reply of a point by Daragh Keane had the Kerry lads up and running before Keane converted a penalty to leave it 1-1 to 0-1 after 9 minutes.
With both teams eager for goals, it was Clonburr who found a second through Murray again. The reply was swift, however, as a searching run by Derry O’Gor-
man presented Dean Moynihan with an opening. His effort rebounded to Darragh Keane who found the net from a tight angle to leave Kilcummin 2-1 to 2-0 ahead at the break. The second half saw the team play some of their best football. Keane opened with a fine point before he added his third goal as Max Moynihan and Tristan Murphy both found the target. The game’s first two-pointer came from the boot of Keane before Clonburr managed to win a penalty. Dan Barry, just on the field, saved Daniel Gribben’s effort with his first touch and Kilcummin manfully cleared their lines with the help of Darragh Fleming, Darragh Forde and Conal McCarthy, and the green and red prevailed.
New York were next up in the cup semi-final, and it was evident from the off that this would be a bruising battle with a number of off the ball altercations prior to throw in. It was the exiles that made the better start, opening with three un-
answered points from Dara Lynch (2) and Fintan Murphy as Kilcummin struggled with the physical presence of the opposition.
They needed a big score to get back into contention and it arrived from the boot of Keane by way of a two-point free, and it was Keane once again from a dead ball that had Kilcummin back in contention at the break as they trailed 0-4 to 0-3. The second half was a tough affair as both sides limited scoring opportunities in the stadium pitch in Owenbeg, but it was New York who mustered the scores mid-way through the half to push ahead 0-7 to 0-3, a lead they held to the finish. New York would lose 1-2 to 0-3 to Naas in the final.
Kilcummin GAA expressed their gratitude to the players, management and parents for representing the club with real pride over the weekend, and to all the sponsors for their help. Well done to all involved.

DONAL CURTIN CUP SEMI FINAL: Our Senior Ladies welcomed the current senior county and Munster champions Castleisland Desmond’s to Derreen on Monday evening for the semi-final of the Credit Union Donal Curtin Division 2 Cup. A tough battle was expected between the two sides, with the hosts taking the spoils in the earlier season league game. The opening exchanges were hard fought with scores from either side with Laura Healy and Kate McCarthy raising white flags for the home team. The visitors took control of the game mid-way through the half with 3 unanswered points with former Kerry star Lorraine Scanlon showing her class around the middle. A well worked move saw Legion youngster Eva O’Shea in for a well worked point with only inches separating it from a green flag. Further points were exchanged, the score again from the trusty left boot of Laura Healy, leaving the half time score at Killarney Legion 0-04 Castleisland Desmonds 0-06. The second half saw the visitors take advantage of the breeze on their backs with some well worked scores to increase the lead. Lorraine Scanlon shows that class doesn’t age, kicking some fine scores. To the ladies credit, they stayed in the game, and with minutes to go, they struck for goal through Ellen Coffey, adding to her earlier point, to leave only 4 between the
teams. With time almost up, another attack was mounted and even though the ball hit the net again, with a cracking kick from Kate McCarthy, play was called back for a free kick before the full-time whistle was blown. Castleisland Desmond’s deservedly advance to the final after an impressive performance on a score of 0-13 to 1-06. The Ladies can hold their heads up high after only being promoted to Division 2 this year. With lots of young blood introduced during the campaign and some experienced heads to return, hopes are high for the forthcoming club league and ultimately the Junior Championship.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: The final round of the Senior County League takes place this Saturday at 5pm when Rathmore are the visitors to Direen for the Division 1 clash. The same two sides are down to meet in Rathbeg in the Division 6 equivalent. Stay tuned to our social media channels for any updates on fixtures.
U15 LADIES FÉILE: On Saturday, our U15 ladies travelled to Mallow, Co. Cork to proudly represent Kerry in Division 2 of the regional Féile. They advanced to the Cup Semi-Final, where they faced the host club Mallow — strong favourites for the title. Despite a determined display and tireless work rate, our girls were edged out in a hard-fought match. The players showed great skill, heart, and sportsmanship throughout the day and were a credit to their club, coaches, and families. A special thank you to Golden Chopsticks and Richard Zhu & Team for generously hosting us for the team meal that evening — a well-deserved celebration of their fantastic efforts.

EAST KERRY U13 LEAGUE ROUND 2: Fossa 0-08 Scartaglen 4-14. A very depleted Fossa U13 side took on Scartaglen in Round 2 of the East Kerry League. With holiday season in full swing the home side were missing several of their starting 15 and great credit is due to 5 of our Under-11 lads who answered the call to ensure the fixture was played. Fossa start-
ed brightly with both Cian Sheehan and Rory Salvador kicking 2 excellent points to ensure Fossa took an early lead. But unfortunately Scartaglen would go on to dominate the remainder of the half and hold a very commanding half time lead of 0-03 to 4-09. But just like last week Fossa were a totally different team in the 2nd half. Rian O'Reilly and Billy Brosnan shored up the defence and Ryan Lynch and Aaron O'Sullivan attacked their opponents with every opportunity from the middle of the park. The introduction of McDara O'Shea in the half forward line worked a treat as he won every ball that came his way. Both teams added 5 points to their tallies in the 2nd half. When excellent Glenflesk referee Evan Horan blew the final whistle, it was Scartaglen who won on a scoreline of 0-08 to 4-14. Next week Fossa will play their final game of this campaign v Beaufort. Fossa Scorers: Aaron O'Sullivan 0-02, Ryan Lynch 0-02, Mark O'Connor 0-01, Cian Sheehan 0-01, Conor Lucey 0-01, Rory Salvador 0-01. Fossa Team: Tommy Kavanagh, Colm Kissane O'Sullivan, Rian O'Reilly, Peter Clifford, Conor Brosnan, Aaron O'Sullivan, Billy Brosnan, Ryan Lynch, Rory Salvador, Finian Swarwick, Mark O'Connor, Conor Lucey, Cian Sheehan, Eoin Murphy, Luke Nott, McDara O'Shea. SENIOR LADIES: Well done to the Fossa Senior Ladies who came out on top in an epic battle against near neighbours Spa in the semi-final of the Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup. After a whirlwind start by the visitors and the early concession of 1-01 Fossa steadied themselves and played their way back into the game. A few long range frees and a couple of well worked scores saw Fossa in at the break 0-06 to 1-02 in front. In a very low scoring, tough game both sides found it hard to break down the defence but all credit to Fossa having got to the front, all worked hard to keep the slender lead. That’s exactly what they did and while giving their supporters some scary moments along the way they ran out eventual winners on a final score of 0-10 to 1-06. Well done to all our players on a real battle of effort. Commiserations to Spa Gaa and next up is the final v Laune Rangers - fixtures details will follow.
CONGRATULATIONS: Well done to Paudie and David Clifford and the Kerry team who gave their supporters one of the most memorable days in Croke Park on Sunday when they dethroned reigning All-Ireland champions, Armagh. It was a complete team performance with our two boys central to this epic win. Next up is Tyrone in the semi-final which is fixed for Saturday 12th July @ 4pm.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 1: It is back to the Credit Union Senior Football League Division 1 league action this weekend as we travel to Beaufort on Saturday evening for Round 11 with a 5pm

ROWING IRELAND 1K CLASSIC: The club enjoyed a highly successful two days of racing last weekend, with the long journey to Leitrim for the Rowing Ireland 1K Classic Regatta. The event is the top
national contest for younger and older rowers alike, bringing together over 1000 competitors in the Junior 13, 14, 15 and Masters age groups. With the growth in numbers competing in recent years, the event has been spun out of the Irish Championship Regatta and now continues as a stand-alone, twoday regatta. Muckross crews made their mark in among the best, winning gold in eight finals, securing second place in four finals and third place in a further six races. There were race wins in the Women’s J14 Quad, Men’s J14 Single, Women’s J13 Octuple, Men’s Masters Eight (composite), Mixed Masters Eight (composite), Mixed J13 Octuple, Men’s J13 Octuple and Women’s J13 Quad. The strong club showing placed Muckross 9th overall on the league table of the 36 clubs represented. Congratulations and well done to all our rowers, coxes and coaches. Many thanks to all the parents of rowers who travelled and supervised the event. Special thanks to Sean Daly and Niall O’Donoghue who towed the boat trailer to and from the event and to Leane’s Kitchens for the use of a towing vehicle. Special thanks also to Cathal Coffey and Ian Coffey who gave their time in preparing boats and equipment ahead of the weekend and for their generous support with boat loans.
TESCO: Killarney Swimming Club has been chosen to be part of the Tesco Community Fund for the next 12 weeks. The Tesco Community Fund was launched in July 2014, to support local good causes in the communities around each of its 180+ stores throughout Ireland. Every 12 weeks, each Tesco store donates up to €1,500 between three local good causes in its community. Don’t forget your blue tokens over the next 12 weeks to support Killarney Swimming Club!
OUTING: The Club held our inaugural juvenile outing for 2025 last Friday evening 27th of June - a good turnout of young anglers tried their luck in windy conditions on the shore of Castlelough Bay on Lough Lein. For many it was their first time fishing and if the smiles and laughter abounding were any gauge of their experience, then it’s safe to say they enjoyed themselves! A juvenile competition evening is in the planning now and details will be published once to hand.
