Squash Club concludes successful 2025 season

Gleneagle Squash Club's final competition of the year took place last Thursday, featuring a match between Ireland international Paul O’Brien’s team and Arthur Murphy’s team.

In the first match, junior Eabha Lynch defeated Karina Murphy, securing points for Team Paul. The second match saw Josh Moore overcome Noreen Tobin in a close contest, extending Team Paul’s

lead to two matches to nil.

Ray O’Callaghan of Team Arthur faced Eamonn Bowler. O'Callaghan initially led two games to nil, but Bowler brought the match back to two games apiece.

The deciding fifth game was closely fought, with O'Callaghan winning 14-13.

The penultimate game was forfeited by Ignacy Truchan, making the match count two-all before the captains' final

battle.

In the season finale, Paul O’Brien, who has represented Ireland this year, played against Arthur Murphy. O'Brien won the first game, and after Murphy levelled the match at one game all, O'Brien secured the next two games to win the night for his team.

The club extended thanks to Brendan Counihan and Sons Ltd for their spon-

covered the full cost of the defibrillator and its weatherproof cabinet.

The hotel also offered its facilities to host CPR and first-aid training sessions this summer.

Gleneagle Arena celebrates 25 years since official opening

This week marks 25 years since Gleneagle Arena was officially opened by then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on Sunday, June 4, 2000.

Originally named Ireland's National Events Centre (INEC), the venue has since grown to become one of the country’s most versatile and iconic event spaces.

Over the past quarter-century, Gleneagle Arena has hosted numerous memorable events, including sold-out concerts by internationally acclaimed artists, major conferences, festivals and sporting events.

Thanks to its cutting-edge facilities and dedicated team, Gleneagle Arena has established Killarney as a year-round destination for both tourism and large-scale events. Its reputation for excellence in

hosting events has made it a prominent fixture on Ireland’s entertainment and conference landscape. Gleneagle Arena exists today because of the vision of the late Maurice O'Donoghue.

“This was our father’s most ambitious project,” said Patrick O'Donoghue, CEO of Gleneagle. “He believed deeply in what a facility like this could bring to Killarney and to the wider region. He had a quiet determination and a deep sense of community. I think he’d be proud to see how far the venue has come. As we move into the next 25 years, we aim to continue providing a welcoming space for great events.”

This year, the venue was renamed Gleneagle Arena as part of a strategic rebranding initiative to align more closely with Gleneagle under whose umbrella it has always operated. The name change

reflects the broader scope of the venue, not just as a national stage but as a cornerstone of the Gleneagle experience. The rebrand also pays homage to the

long-standing heritage of the Gleneagle Hotel, a name synonymous with hospitality, entertainment and innovation in Irish tourism.

Martin Grady's dual role at Road Safety Conference

Councillor Martin Grady wore two significant hats at the recent 'Safer Roads' conference held at the INEC.

The local councillor, who also serves as a retained firefighter with Killarney Fire and Rescue, participated in the event hosted by Kerry County Council. His dual roles allow him to contribute to road safety policy changes at a council level, while also bringing practical knowledge from his experience with fire and rescue services to the discussion. The conference brought together emergency services and road safety experts to share information and promote road safety education and awareness within

the community.

Aaron Fahy and Paudie Mangan of Kerry Fire Service were also in attendance, alongside Councillor Grady. The conference was hosted by Kerry County Council.

The county’s Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh said: “Road safety is not just about the road or the vehicle but also about how technology, human behaviour, enforcement, and education intersect to reduce risks and prevent accidents. Every branch of the road safety tree is represented at the ‘Safer Roads’ conference, and our main aim is to improve road safety for every road user.”

“ MTU’s hands-on learning environment and supportive community are helping me build my future, while also inspiring others to do the same.

Browne said she captured the image during a club outing on February 27, around 8:30pm.

She set her tripod low to keep the castle, trees, and their reflections in focus on what was a clear and calm night. She later discovered a light pink aurora was present when reviewing her images. She cropped the image square to highlight the scene's symmetry.

“Hospitality is our tradition”: 70 years of Murphy’s Bar with Sean Murphy and Diarmuid O’Callaghan

If the walls of Murphy’s Bar on College Street could talk, they’d have 70 years of stories to pour you.

Luckily, I didn’t need talking walls — I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sean Murphy, the owner of Murphy’s Bar, and Diarmuid O’Callaghan, the bar’s steadfast manager of over 28 years. Between the two, there’s enough history, humour, and hospitality to fill a few barrels (and probably empty a few too).

Diarmuid, take us back to your very first day at Murphy’s…

Diarmuid (laughing): My application was up a ladder! Sean’s office was upstairs under renovation at the time and there I was, mid-climb, when I got offered the job on the spot. I finished up in The White Gates on Muckross Road, and made the move into town. My first shift was under Paudie O’Donoghue, a brilliant manager. And sure look, the rest is history.

And after all these years, what have been the standout days for both of ye?

Sean: The Munster Finals in Killarney — no question. Back then, there weren’t big pubs. We were jammed to the rafters, customers spilling out to the backyard, sitting on beer barrels.

Diarmuid: Oh the mayhem! We'd be pulling in casual staff left, right and centre to cope with the crowd. It was organised chaos in the best way.

So much has changed in those 70 years. What’s stayed the same?

Sean: The sense of welcome. You walk into Murphy’s, and whether you're a tourist or a local, you’re greeted like an old friend. That’s Peggy’s legacy — my mother — she started that.

Diarmuid: The big changes? Smoking ban, drink-driving laws, the health craze! Lads used to leave work and head to the pub. Now it’s the gym. And I miss the old 1pm lunch crowd — in, fed, and gone by 1:45pm like clockwork.

Sean: There was no food in bars originally. But one year, my mother came home

from America and said, “You’ll never believe it — they serve lunches in pubs over there!” And just like that, the plated lunch was born at Murphy’s.

So what about showing matches?

Diarmuid: It was a different world. No Sky Sports in every bar — or every house. Sean (laughing): I used to drive to Ballincollig to a fella who’d record the matches for me. I’d do a U-turn and race back to Killarney, where a pub full of punters would cheer as if it were live. We'd replay the game on Monday night too. Great times.

And my mother, the marketing genius! On fair days outside, she'd fry onions at the door to draw people in with the smell. Worked like a charm.

As I sat there listening, I realised how much has changed — Diarmuid’s 28 years alone span everything from Babycham to boutique gins. Now everyone has a match on their phone and news before it’s news. Do we still savour the surprises? Or are we too busy recording them?

Speaking of Babycham — what drinks have stood the test of time?

Diarmuid: Guinness, Harp, vodka and gin — the staples. But Babycham? That’s one for the history books. Sean: It was like a gentle prosecco. Came in a tiny bottle. The ladies loved it.

Sean, what are you most proud of?

Sean: Staying open for 70 years — through recessions, COVID, emigration. We’ve had amazing staff — Diarmuid’s been here 28 years, Philip’s our head chef 25 years, and Marian just retired after 26 years in accounts. It’s a family, really.

Diarmuid: I’m proud of the regulars, the birthdays we all sing for, the fact I’ve been entrusted with showing Sean’s four daughters the ropes – Emma, Rebecca, Isabelle and Tara.

Sean (interrupting): And thank God I’m

not in charge of their rosters!

Diarmuid, can you give one piece of advice to the next generation of bar staff?

Diarmuid: Consistency. Keep your standards high, your service solid. And find that magic line — not too distant, not too familiar. Make eye contact and be yourself!

Sean, tell me about the early days of Murphy's Bar.

Sean: In the 1950s, my mother Peggy managed Scott’s and my father John was a solicitor’s clerk just across the way. When they married in 1955, she bought Murphy’s — a bold move for a woman then, especially to keep working. We lived on Mangerton View and swapped houses with the Moriartys who were living above the bar. My mother would bang the broom handle on the ceiling to call me and my siblings down to help — my twin Gearoid, Margaret, Martina, Noel RIP and Pat RIP. I was mortified when my friends would

call to ask me out and Mam would ask them to peel spuds or go to Gleeson's for 2lbs of ham! But she’d always reward them after so thankfully they remained my friends.

In 2000, my wife Máire and I expanded into The Jug of Punch, later called Squires adding on 22 bedrooms. But people always knew it as Murphy’s. That’s the brand. That’s the home. Before I left, I wandered through the bar — spotting photos of celebrities who’d dropped in over the years. Kevin Rahm from Desperate Housewives, Actress Ellen Barkin and actor Gabriel Byrne, Arnold Palmer, Kenny Rogers, Paul McGrath, Paul O’Connor....to name but a few. Murphy’s is clearly on the map. Diarmuid, never one for the limelight, ducked back behind the bar with a nod. Murphy’s Bar turns 70 this June, and the big bash is happening on June 16. As for the timeframe?

“All day and all night,” they said. In true Murphy’s style.

Kerry County Council seeks input for EV strategy

Kerry County Council has launched a public consultation to gather input for the development of a regional Electric Vehicle (EV) Strategy for the South-West. This strategy aims to establish principles for the rollout of EV charging infrastructure in the area.

The consultation opened on May 30th and will run until 4 pm on June 30th,

2025. Residents, stakeholders, and the public are invited to share their views on the future of EV infrastructure. This initial phase focuses on developing the strategy itself, not the immediate installation of chargers.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Breandán Fitzgerald, welcomed the initiative. He said: “Kerry County Council is firmly committed to supporting sustainable transport and enabling the

delivery of a comprehensive network of strategically located electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This network will support the growing number of EVs on our roads and meet the evolving needs of our communities. The goal of the Cork and Kerry EV Infrastructure Charging Strategy is to establish the principles that will guide the rollout of this infrastructure across the region. This consultation phase welcomes input and feedback from members of the public and stakeholders.”

As part of this regional consultation, stakeholders are asked to consider two types of local charging infrastructure: destination charging at popular sites like shopping centers and hotels, and neighbourhood charging within residential areas.

Feedback from this consultation will be used to develop a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure strategy. The questionnaire is available at www. southwestevstrategy.com

As part of the partnership, the team recently held a bonding evening at the hotel, where new players met and planned for upcoming games and blitzes this summer.

Centra The Reeks among new EV recharging hubs

Centra The Reeks in Killarney is one of 53 new high-power electric vehicle (EV) recharging hubs announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien. These hubs will be located across Ireland's national road network. Almost €8 million has been allocated to support grants for this recharging infrastructure, with chargers expected to be operational by the end of this year. The initiative will deliver 175 new fast and ultra-fast recharging points, making it more convenient for EV drivers on longer journeys.

Minister O’Brien stated that these steps aim to make electric vehicles accessible for everyone and encourage more people to switch to electric. The new hubs are part of a broader plan to establish a reliable recharging network, ensuring a maximum distance of 60km between hubs. Funding for these hubs comes through the Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) initiative, operated by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) and delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

KUDOS AWARD NOMINEE SPOTLIGHT

KERRY MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM

CATEGORY: GROUP AWARDS | AWARD: COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR

Founded in 1966 after the tragic deaths of two climbers in the mountains of Kerry, the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has been a vital part of the community in the for nearly 60 years.

Comprised entirely of volunteers, KMRT has grown into a highly skilled and well-respected group of mountaineers and first responders, providing a lifeline for those who find themselves in trouble on our rugged mountain terrain.

Their operational area spans the Beara, Iveragh, and Dingle peninsulas, home to fifteen of Ireland’s twenty highest peaks, including Carrauntoohil, the country's tallest mountain at 1,039 metres.

Rob Fell, a member of the team, explains: “The main goal has always been to come to the aid of anyone in difficulty on the hills in the Southwest of Ireland. Technology and equipment have evolved a lot since our inception, but the spirit of volunteerism and love of the mountains remains at the heart of what we do.”

Currently, there are around 40 active volunteers on the team, all on call 24/7. While each call-out is unique, members rotate roles depending on the nature of the emergency. All are trained to Advanced Rescue Emergency Care First Aid Level and undergo regular training in various rescue disciplines including ropework, navigation, casualty care, and helicopter operations.

The team trains rigorously to be ready for all scenarios, from technical stretcher evacuations and hoists to complex

search and communication efforts. Many members also have experience in mountaineering around the world, including in the Alps, Himalayas, and New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

KMRT operates as a registered charity with approximately half of its annual

budget covered by grants from the Irish Coast Guard and Kerry County Council. The other half relies on public donations and local fundraising efforts. Community support is central to the team’s identity. “We feel very lucky to be held in high regard in Kerry and

the surrounding areas,” says Fell. “It’s always heartening to receive letters or emails after rescues that express gratitude for the help we’ve been able to give.”

Engagement with the wider public is an ongoing priority for KMRT. The team regularly participates in local events, opens its base to visiting school and scout groups, and recently celebrated the opening of a new extension to its rescue station a development made possible thanks to local support.

In addition to working closely with the Irish Coast Guard and SARDA (Search and Rescue Dog Association), KMRT also benefits from local business partnerships that organise fundraisers and other initiatives.

When asked what achievement the team is most proud of, Fell is unequivocal: “All rescues where the casualty is brought safely down from the mountain and given the care they need are what give us satisfaction.”

Being nominated for the Community Group of the Year award is a meaningful moment for the team. “It’s a privilege to be recognised among the many fantastic community groups doing great work around the county,” Rob says. “To win would be a huge honour and a reflection of the dedication every team member brings.”

For those who wish to support the team’s work, donations can be made through their website at kerrymountainrescue.ie. Every contribution helps ensure that the team can continue to provide this critical service to both locals and visitors drawn to Kerry’s stunning but often challenging landscape.

Launched by the Killarney Advertiser, in partnership with several local businesses and the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kudos aims to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of Killarney with a heartfelt Community Awards ceremony, set to take place this November. The awards will honour individuals, groups, and organisations that go above and beyond in their contributions to local causes, from youth engagement and environmental efforts to acts of kindness and volunterism. With 15 award categories that reach into every part of the community, Kudos is calling on local schools, charities, businesses, sports clubs, and residents to participate by submitting nominations. Locals are encouraged to check out the award categories at www.kudoskillarney.ie/community-awards and to nominate someone they believe deserves recognition via the online form. Whether it’s a neighbour, teacher, student volunteer, or youth leader doing great things, we want to hear about it and give them the Kudos they deserve.

Killarney-based Clothesline Canopy marks 15 Years

Clothesline Canopy, the Killarney-founded business providing outdoor laundry drying solutions, is celebrating 15 years in operation this June.

Established in 2010 by Tadhg McCarthy the company began by addressing the challenge of drying clothes outdoors in Ireland's variable weather. It has since expanded nationwide, with canopies installed in every county.

To mark its 15th anniversary, Clothesline Canopy will offer a 15% discount for 15 days, starting June 3. The code HAPPY15 can be used at checkout.

“I never imagined, when I built the first canopy for my own home, that 15 years later we’d have helped families from Donegal to Wexford solve the very same issue,” said McCarthy, founder and owner of Clothesline Canopy.

“It’s a huge point of pride for me that our product has found its way to every county in Ireland. We’ve kept our focus

on a great product and service, practical design, and real customer needs — and I think that’s why we’ve stood the test of time.”

Clothesline Canopy offers various sizes with nationwide flatpack delivery and professional installation in selected counties.

The weather-resistant structures are designed to allow year-round outdoor drying, aiming to reduce reliance on tumble dryers.

McCarthy noted that customer feedback, highlighting time and money savings, has been a driving factor for the business.

Kerry Airport expects further passenger growth this year

Kerry Airport has released its Annual Report & Accounts for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2024, reporting an Operating Profit after Taxation of €1,373,300. This represents an increase from the €1,198,347 profit recorded in the previous year.

The airport experienced a record year in 2024, handling 417,409 passengers, marking the third-highest passenger numbers in its history. Airport officials anticipate that passenger figures will exceed this amount in 2025.

Basil Sheerin, Chief Financial Officer of Kerry Airport, said that the profit, supported by Government grants, is welcome, particularly in light of the planned Capital Expenditure of over €4.4 million in 2025

“Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive following the opening of our new Arrivals Hall in March 2025 with the expansion of the Departures Hall due for completion by the end of July 2025. This extension is all part of our continued commitment to improving the Kerry Airport passenger experi-

ence,” he said.

“Growth in 2024 was driven by strong performances in our fuel, gift shop/duty free, and car park operations. However, administrative expenses remain a challenge, with increased costs in wages, local authority rates, energy, and maintenance exerting pressure on our gross profit margin. We continue to monitor these areas rigorously to ensure optimal value for money.”

Kerry Airport remains committed to its environmental goals, including the Science Based Targets Initiative for greenhouse gas emissions. It is nearing full conversion of its vehicle fleet to electric and has begun a detailed feasibility study into on-campus energy generation.

On behalf of the Executive Team, Basil Sheerin thanked the Board of Directors and staff for their leadership and support, and acknowledged the backing of elected representatives in Kerry and their colleagues in the Department of Transport.

Kilgobnet school wins National Cress Head Challenge

Kilgobnet National School in County Kerry has been named the overall winner of the national Cress Head challenge, part of the SuperValu Let’s Grow initiative.

Now in its third year, the SuperValu Let’s Grow programme encourages children across Ireland to engage with growing their own food. The initiative aims to help students understand food origins, develop food empathy, and experience handson learning.

Participating Kerry schools received free classroom kits earlier this year, which included seeds, compostable pots, and

growing guides. Classrooms have been actively tending to their seedlings. The Cress Head challenge specifically tasked students with growing cress and transforming it into characters. Kilgobnet N.S. was recognized for its creativity, imagination, and team spirit, earning top honours in both the Munster region and nationally.

Minister Micheal Healy-Rae welcomes planning reforms

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Healy-Rae TD, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Housing James Browne TD of proposed updates to planning exemptions, describing it as “a practical and long-overdue move” that reflects proposals he personally championed during pre-Government policy talks.

Minister Healy-Rae said:

“This is something I’ve been pushing for over many years, in policy discussions before entering Government and throughout my time in politics. I’ve consistently called for more flexibility and clarity around planning exemptions, because these are the real-life issues that come up in every county and every parish. It’s great to now see these proposals taking shape.”

The forthcoming regulations are expected to cover attic conversions, subdivision of dwellings, modular units within residential boundaries, and home adaptations for older people, measures that Minister Healy-Rae says will deliver “immediate benefits” for families and local

authorities alike.

“Too often people are caught up in red tape trying to do something as simple as converting a roof space or putting in a modular home for a family member. This review will cut through that helping people to move faster while also freeing up planners to focus on the larger-scale developments we need.”

Minister Healy-Rae added that local authorities, especially in rural areas, will see direct benefits from the move:

“This change will ease a massive administrative burden on councils, particularly in rural counties like Kerry. It’s about using common sense to improve housing delivery whether it’s for an older parent, an adult child, or a family trying to make their home work better for their needs.”

He concluded by calling for the swift finalisation of the new rules:

“We need to move quickly now. Once this process is complete, the regulations should be finalised without delay. The clarity these exemptions provide will be important for families, for planners, and for the overall efficiency of the housing system.”

Public vote for Autism Friendly Town funding

Jessica O'Connor of Autism Friendly Killarney is urging public support in a vote for funding from the AIB Community €1 Million Fund.

Killarney is seeking these funds to further its inclusive initiatives.

The town was officially named as an Autism Friendly Town in partnership with AsIAm, Ireland’s National Autism Charity, in May, becoming only the third town in Ireland to do so.

Jessica, chairperson of the Autism Friendly Killarney Committee, stated that this recognition is just the beginning of Killarney's journey to create a fully inclu-

sive society.

To support Autism Friendly Killarney, the public is asked to vote for Torc Community Family Resource Centre, the registered charity, on the AIB Community Fund 2025 websitehttp://aib.ie/personal-forms/community-fund -

Voters need to provide their name and email, the charity registration number (20060329), select 'Munster' as the location, and "Other" for the social theme. A brief sentence explaining why the funding is deserved is also required. The closing date for votes is June 25.

National Park ranks in Europe's Top 10 for BioBlitz

Killarney National Park Education team have once again surpassed and exceeded the BioBlitz challenge during a very successful Biodiversity Week 2025 in the National Park.

The park placed eighth out of 86 participating National Park sites across Europe. During the week, 647 species were recorded within Killarney National Park.

This marks an improvement from last year's ninth-place finish, where 514 species were recorded.

The park saw a significant increase in public involvement this year, with many members of the general public contributing to the recordings. Veluwe Natura

2000 site in the Netherlands secured first place with 1,627 species.

During Biodiversity Week, Killarney National Park Education Centre staff organised nature walks in Derrycunnihy and Ross Island.

Participants were encouraged to use smartphones to photograph flora and fauna and upload their findings to the ObsIdentify app.

This competition aims to raise awareness of the variety of species in Killarney National Park. Citizen science projects like BioBlitz assist educators and conservation rangers in monitoring and recording species within the park.

Ireland oficially ranked as most educated country in the world

Ireland has officially been named the most educated country in the world, according to new data published by CBRE Research.

The study revealed that 52.4% of Ireland’s adult population aged between 25 and 64 now hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, amounting to approximately 1.8 million people. The findings place Ireland ahead of other education powerhouses such as Switzerland (46%), Singapore (45%), Belgium (44.1%), and the UK (43.6%), which round out the top five.

While larger countries may boast greater total numbers of college graduates, Ireland tops the global rankings by percentage, a strong indicator of the country's focus on higher education as a pathway to economic development and workforce readiness.

The report also highlighted notable regional and generational trends. Across Europe, there is a marked generational shift in education levels: 82.7% of adults aged 25-54 have completed upper secondary education, compared to just 70.4% among those aged 55-74. The data also shows a growing gender divide in education, with women in many European countries outpacing men in higher education attainment. Among those aged 25-34, nearly half of women (49.9%) have completed higher education, compared to 38.7%

Trump reinstates travel ban on 12 countries away Home

President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order reinstating a travel ban that restricts entry into the United States for citizens from 12 countries, citing national security and public safety concerns. The order, announced on

of men.

The United States, while not ranking in the top five by percentage, still holds the third-highest number of de-

gree-holding adults worldwide, with over 78 million Americans having attained at least a bachelor’s degree.

Number of high-networth individuals hits record high

Ireland is now home to more than two-and-a-half times as many millionaires as it had during the peak of the Celtic Tiger era, according to new data from Capgemini. The latest figures, based on 2024 data, show that 54,730 Irish residents now qualify as dollar millionaires, a figure greater than the populations of Drogheda or Dundalk and approaching that of Waterford city.

The annual Wealth Report, published by the Paris-based consultancy, tracks global trends in high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs). These are people whose net assets exceed $1 million (€875,000), excluding the value of their main home but including other financial assets and investments such as cash, stocks, art, and collectibles.

June 4, 2025, also imposes partial restrictions on travellers from seven additional nations. The ban is set to take effect at on Monday, June 9.

The full travel ban applies to nationals of Afghanistan, Myanmar (Burma), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. He has also placed partial restrictions are imposed on travellers from these seven countries including Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. The partial restrictions primarily affect certain visa categories, including tourist and student visas, and may involve reduced visa validity and enhanced security screenings.

The Trump administration cites inadequate identity management, lack of

cooperation in information sharing, and high visa overstay rates as primary reasons for the restrictions. The recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, allegedly committed by an Egyptian national who had overstayed his visa, was highlighted as an example of the dangers posed by insufficient vetting. Notably, Egypt is not among the countries listed in the ban. The proclamation includes exemptions for lawful permanent residents, individuals holding valid visas, dual nationals traveling on a passport from a non-restricted country, diplomats, and athletes participating in major international sporting events such as the Olympics or World Cup.

At the height of the Celtic Tiger in 2007, Ireland had 20,400 millionaires, a number that fell sharply in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The current total represents a dramatic rebound, with Irish millionaires now collectively holding $182.64 billion (€160 billion) in wealth.

The surge reflects more than a decade of steady economic growth, boosted by strong foreign direct investment, a thriving tech sector, and the rise of successful Irish-owned enterprises. Prominent figures in this new wave of wealth include tech entrepreneurs like Tommy Kelly (ESW), Barry English (Winthrop Technologies), and John and Patrick Collison (Stripe). In parallel, figures from the creative and lifestyle sectors such as Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, Aimee Connolly (Sculpted by Aimee), and Pippa O’Connor (Poco) show a diversification of wealth sources in Ireland.

35 people including children deported to Nigeria

A total of 35 individuals, among them five children, were deported from Ireland on a chartered flight to Nigeria that departed from Dublin Airport on Wednesday. The group included 21 men, nine women, and five children, all of whom were part of family units. This marks the third deportation operation involving a charter flight since such flights resumed in February. According to the Department of Justice, additional chartered deportation flights are scheduled to take place over the course of the year. Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan emphasised the importance of upholding immigration rules, stating:

"Ireland operates a rules-based immigration system, and it is essential that these rules are enforced. Individuals coming to Ireland must follow the proper legal pathways, which must be preserved to

ensure the system functions fairly and effectively. If someone’s application for international protection is denied and they are instructed to leave the State, they are required to do so."

Minister O'Callaghan said operations like this one convey a clear message that remaining in the country without legal permission carries consequences. Although the flight experienced an unscheduled stop due to a medical issue on board, it later continued its route, and all 35 individuals arrived in Nigeria this morning. So far this year, two previous charter flights removed a total of 71 individuals under deportation orders. With this most recent flight, the number rises to 106. In addition, 54 deportation orders have been carried out via commercial flights, and 23 individuals have confirmed voluntary, unescorted departures from Ireland in 2025.

Grocery costs climb twice the rate of inflation

Grocery prices are increasing at more than twice the pace of overall inflation, according to new figures released by market research firm Kantar. Data shows that for the 12 weeks ending May 18, grocery prices were up by 4.96% compared to the same period last year. That rise far exceeds the general inflation rate, which the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported as 1.4% for the year ending in May. Kantar also noted that food prices are now accelerating at double the speed seen during the same period in 2024.

This sharp increase in food costs, especially in staples like dairy has taken many consumers by surprise. Earlier CSO data from May revealed that the average price of a pound of butter rose by nearly €1 over the past year to €4.69, a jump of more than 26%.

Applications open for free college courses

Applications are now open for Springboard, a government-funded programme offering free and heavily subsidised higher education courses.

The latest list of available courses was released last week. These programmes focus primarily on fields that align with Ireland’s national economic priorities, including infrastructure planning, sustainable construction, renewable energy, digital skills, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. Courses are available at certificate, degree, and master’s level, leading to qualifications in sectors with strong employment prospects.

Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless described the programme as “one of the most impactful investments” the government has made in upskilling and further education. He noted that the courses are tailored to meet Ireland’s changing skills needs.

“This initiative gives thousands of people the opportunity to upskill or retrain in key growth areas – from AI and cybersecurity to infrastructure and sustainability,” he said. He also emphasised that the programme is designed to make learning more accessible for everyone.

For the 2025/26 academic year, Springboard will offer 7,719 places across 249 courses. Courses will start between 1

July and 31 October 2025. Those who are unemployed or returning to the workforce after time away, such as caring for family are eligible for a free place. For those currently in employment, Springboard covers 90% of course fees, with the remaining 10% payable by the applicant or their employer.

High Court decision allows Sceilg Mhichíl boat trips to resume

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has welcomed the High Court’s decision, delivered on Thursday allowing it to issue Sceilg Mhichíl boat operator permits to the successful tenderers from a recent competition.

The Kantar report also highlights a shift in consumer behaviour, as shoppers adapt to higher grocery bills by more actively seeking out discounts and promotional offers. In the past 12 weeks alone, consumers spent €124 million more on discounted items than they did during the same time last year. Kantar said this marks the highest proportion of products sold on promotion since May 2021. The market share of branded products (47.4%) and own-label items (47.1%) is now nearly identical. Notably, premium own-label products continue to grow faster than the broader grocery market. Among supermarkets, Dunnes Stores led the way in May, capturing a 23.8% market share. Tesco followed with 23.3%, SuperValu with 20.3%, Lidl at 13.8%, and Aldi with 11.7%.

This development means boat trips to Sceilg Mhichíl are now expected to commence on Saturday, June 7, pending suitable weather conditions. The OPW will contact the boat operators to finalise the necessary procedures.

The process of issuing permits for the 2025 season had been delayed in recent weeks due to legal proceedings initiated by two unsuccessful tenderers.

The OPW had filed a motion to lift the suspension that resulted from these proceedings, and that motion was heard in the High Court this week. The Judge has now ordered that the OPW can proceed with issuing the permits for the current season.

The OPW acknowledged the crucial role Sceilg Mhichíl plays in the tourism economy of South Kerry and the wider region. The office confirmed it has been making all necessary preparations to reopen the world heritage site to visitors.

The OPW is now looking forward to welcoming visitors to the site for the current season.

KNOCK ON WOOD

Fans hoping injured Kerry quartet will be right for knockout stages

Kerry boss Jack O’Connor is sweating on the fitness of four key players ahead of next weekend’s All-Ireland SFC Group 2 Round 3 match against Meath.

The Kingdom will travel to Tullamore for that game on Saturday, June 14 knowing that a draw will be enough to earn top spot and a place in the quarters, but they may have to plan without the injured quartet of Barry Dan O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor.

In-form midfielder Barry Dan limped off with a knee issue 21 minutes into the victory over Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday last and while there is no official word yet, unofficial soundings are that

the injury is serious.

Playmaker Clifford only lasted 31 minutes on Leeside. After playing a right-footed pass into Paul Geaney, the Fossa star turned and signalled to the sideline that he could not continue, and he was promptly replaced by Dylan Geaney. It is understood that he is struggling with a hamstring injury.

Paul Geaney, the veteran inside forward who is arguably playing his best football in years, did not emerge for the second half after taking a heavy hit from Cork big man Seán Walsh. The right shoulder is the area of concern for the Dingle native. And Diarmuid O’Connor did not make the 26 after making his long-awaited

return in the previous match against Roscommon. O’Connor had been out with a shoulder injury since the Armagh league game but now he’s dealing with a groin problem. Worryingly, Jack O’Connor does not expect his first-choice midfielder to be available for the trip to Offaly. Realistically Kerry will be favourites to prevail in that final round robin game regardless of what team they put out; in fact, O’Connor may even be tempted to rest one or two players to avoid picking up further injuries ahead of the knockout stages.

Of real concern, though, is the availability of the aforementioned panel members for those knockout stages. If Kerry do

manage to top the group, they will face a winner from the preliminary quarter-finals in the last eight – potentially someone like Dublin, Galway or Donegal (depending on results next weekend).

Of course, defeat against Meath would leave Kerry in the preliminaries themselves, with a home tie possibly against one of those big dogs.

Either way, the Kingdom will need all hands on deck, so getting their injured players back on the pitch ASAP will be of paramount importance.

Clifford and O’Shea shine as Kingdom rout Rebels

Kerry kick seven two-pointers en route to strong 11-point win

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP 2

Cork 0-20 Kerry 1-28

Páirc Uí Chaoimh

In the end it was comfortable for Kerry, even if they did trail by three at the break.

Another Man of the Match display by David Clifford inspired Kerry to an 11-point victory over Cork on Saturday as Jack O’Connor’s men moved one step closer to an All-Ireland quarter-final.

Clifford kicked 1-8 with Seánie O’Shea adding 0-9 from placed balls (between them matching the Rebels’ overall total of 20 points) and in the end it was comfortable for the boys in green and gold, even if they did trail by three points at the break.

Cork managed to outscore their neighbours in that first period with the wind at their backs, although it was Kerry’s passive defending and not the breeze that allowed the hosts to push ahead.

John Cleary’s side are experts at setting screens and too often Kerry’s backs fell right into the trap, failing to either switch or fight over or under the screen to pressurise the shooter. Brian Hurley’s two-pointer after the hooter was a prime example. You would expect more defensive intensity in a training exercise.

Were it not for a brilliantly taken goal by Clifford in the opening five minutes – he intercepted a short kickout, drove for the posts and coolly side-footed a drop-kick past Micheál Aodh Martin – the gap at halftime could have been significantly wider than three points.

Keeper Shane Ryan also deserves a mention for his efforts in the first half. He made two excellent 1v1 saves after being left exposed by his teammates in front of him. The Rathmore man is surely one of the best in the business when it comes to standing tall and making

stops in these crucial scenarios.

To their credit, Kerry’s backs came out fighting in the second half, possibly with their manager’s words still ringing in their ears. Key players Tom O’Sullivan, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Gavin White all grew into the game and it made a telling difference. They upped the physicality levels and got stuck in like it was a championship game against their oldest rivals, and time and time again they forced turnovers, won dirty ball, and denied Cork’s forwards of scoring opportunities.

With first-half substitute Mark O’Shea playing a blinder under high balls, Kerry got a foothold around the middle of the field and this allowed them to attack at speed. Clifford and O’Shea were almost flawless with their shooting, kicking five two-pointers between them. (Kerry had seven twos in total, their biggest haul so far this season.) Clifford and O’Shea were ably assisted by substitute Killian Spillane who swung over two lovely scores off his left.

Ryan was called into action again in the final quarter as he tipped Mark Cronin’s penalty onto the post before bouncing up and blocking Cronin’s follow-up attempt. The ball broke to the Cork corner forward for a third bite but Ó Beaglaoich got his body in the way. His intervention typified Kerry’s vastly improved defensive showing in the second 35.

Two-pointers from the left boots of Tony Brosnan and Tom O’Sullivan and a single by Dylan Geaney rounded out the scoring for the group leaders, who are now in pole position to secure the coveted first seed that will send them straight through to the quarters. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained by Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney and Barry Dan O’Sullivan took some gloss off the win.

Meath, who beat Cork in Round 1 and drew with Roscommon in Round 2, are next up with the fixture set for O’Connor Park in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. Throw-in next Saturday (June 14) is at 4.15pm. The match will not be shown live on RTÉ or GAA+.

Ivan’s the man to report on sport

Killarney native takes over Terrace Talk hosting duties

The catchy signature tune of Terrace Talk last Monday night announced the arrival of Ivan Hurley presenting the very popular weekly sports programme on Radio Kerry for the first time.

I met up with Ivan last weekend to find out a little more about the new presenter and first asked him about growing up

in Killarney. Ivan Hurley: I grew up in Whitebridge Manor on the outskirts of Killarney, where hurling and football were very much part of my life, and that was no surprise. My mother is Caroline Hurley, originally O'Sullivan, from just over the opposite side of the river and my father, Joe Hurley, originally from Kilkenny, brought a deep interest in hurling. I went to school in the Holy Cross Mercy for a couple of years and then went to Lissivigeen NS to finish off my primary school education. Then to the Carnegie (ISK) in Killorglin, leading to third level at IT Tralee, as it was then known, where I spent 4 years on the media course. It covered a wide range, but the one that suited me most was radio, and I have been involved ever since in various aspects of radio, including reporting on different sports for Radio Kerry. I also have experience in producing programmes, including Terrace Talk, and filling in to present Radio Kerry Sport for anchorman Joe O'Mahony whenever he was unavailable. Football and hurling were very strong in my parents' native counties. I played juvenile football with Spa and then joined Dr Crokes

for the hurling, much to the dislike of my mother! I loved hurling and played it up through the ranks on various teams with the Crokes. I was interested in all sports, including motorsport, soccer and snooker. My uncle Connie O’Sullivan was, and still is, a very prominent snooker man in Killarney, so we weren't left with much choice!

Eamonn Fitzgerald: After your Leaving Cert, why did you choose ITT and the media course?

IH: I wasn’t what you would call a very studious person in school, so the practical core section of media attracted me. I was very interested in radio broadcasting, but also in social media, so the course offered a wide variety of media platforms to learn about. I didn't enjoy the late nights studying for the Leaving Cert; it took me away from watching or playing sports for too long, so the books and I weren't best friends! The course in Tralee offered far more practical learning, getting out and about interviewing people or playing with buttons inside in the studio was much more my style of learning!

EF: Jimmy Magee, the Memory Man and wonderful broadcaster, once told me that as a young boy listening to Micheál O’Hehir, he ran around his back garden using the handle of a brush to broadcast his imaginary

games. Did anything like that happen to you growing up in Killarney?

IH: As was the case with my generation in the early 2000s, I was into playing sports games on the PlayStation after school. I would turn down the volume and give my own live broadcast as my imagination took me to the scene of the action. We also had a tape recorder, and I often taped myself reporting or presenting what I thought were live broadcasts on the radio! I must give a dig out at home to see if I still have them!

EF: The late great Micheál O'Hehir also told me that even on big occasions like All-Ireland final day and a packed Croke Park, he directed his live broadcast to a single person listening down in Kerry, and that was the real connection. If a player went down injured, he never dramatised it, saying that he/she was being stretched off, because that injured player had a mother, sister, or close friend who would be very worried if they heard a report of serious injury and hospitalisation.

IH: Micheál O'Hehir had a generational tone and would be hard to match. But you're right, he made a connection with the audience, and that’s why he was liked so much as a broadcaster. He sucked you in. Radio is unique in that the listener is relying on you to paint the pic-

ture for them. With television, you have the images there, and a commentator is just bringing you along. But on the radio, you are obliged to describe the action as best as possible for those at home who are totally blind to where you are and what you are watching. It's unique and long may it continue.

EF: I have heard you quite often reporting for Radio Kerry Sport on a variety of sports, including a motor rallying event, soccer, and other sports; you have a very clear and welcoming radio voice for listeners.

IH: Thank you. I never use a script. All I might have are a few short headings, so I speak naturally, giving my full attention to the person I am interviewing or in the reports I make to Radio Kerry Sport. I suppose it's important to give everyone the full facts while still keeping reports upbeat and entertaining. Having a vast interest in all sports means I could go out and report on most events in Kerry, which is a strong skill-set of mine.

EF: What is the key to quality interviewing and broadcasting?

IH: Listening. When you listen fully to the person you are interviewing, it sounds far more natural for the listeners. Also, you often pick up some gems that the interviewee says, and that leads naturally to a whole new insight that you would have missed if you had been thinking of the next question. It is also more authentic for the people who are tuned into the programme. If I were to write out, say, 10 or 12 questions and stick to that, I would miss out on key points from the interviewee and potentially miss out on a really interesting part of the interview.

EF: What can the listeners of Terrace Talk expect from you in your new role?

IH: We will be concentrating on what is relevant sports news and of course, we will be following the progress of the Kerry (GAA) teams, men and women, hoping they will progress to their respective All-Irelands, the hurling, athletics, and any sport where Kerry teams and sports people are involved. We will also cover

minority sports and individual achievements of Kerry people. I am very conscious that one of the secret successes of Terrace Talk is that it is a great facility for the ordinary person interested in sport to voice his/her opinion. Some sports programmes are top-heavy with pundits. We will need some punditry for analysis and comment, but here in Kerry in particular, where people love their sport, Terrace Talk will be the vehicle for the ordinary sports followers to have their say. Some may not be up to date with technology, but there will be plenty of friendly ways to contact the programme. I've produced the programme for the last five years and we get regular calls from New York, Australia and London; it gives some members of the wider Kerry community to reconnect with home, which I think is great.

EF: You are the media officer for Kerry FC, and that is taking off now in its third season in the League of Ireland. It was a tough enough start for Kerry in LOI soccer.

IH: The first season was a whole new experience; yes, it was a learning experience. Our form was more consistent in year two, and this season we are going very well.

EF: Last Friday’s 2-0 win over Longford Town at home in Mounthawk Park must have given you a great gee-up.

IH: A home win is always great for the team and the fans. The arrival of new manager Colin Healy brings a wealth of experience, and he has been a very steadying influence, building on the foundation work of other managers we have had in our three years of LOI. Presently, we are in 7th position halfway through the league, and the signs are good that we can realistically challenge for one of the top spots on the table, and we are just five points off the playoff places with half the season to go.

EF: Killarney man Ryan Kelliher was your wonderful striker and prolific scorer in the first two seasons, but injuries have curtailed his appearanc-

Even when my wife Eileen and I were planning our wedding, we had to be very choosy about the date, not clashing with any big sporting occasion. God forbid I’d miss out on sport!

es this season. He is not appearing on the score sheet in recent games. What is the up-to-date position on Ryan?

IH: He suffered a lot with hamstring trouble early on this season, and then he wasn’t long back when he did his cruciate. He is attending Santry at present for ACL surgery, which effectively rules him out for the rest of this season. It is a hard blow for him and for Kerry FC because he was regularly on the score sheet. Ryan is a great young lad and is great around the dressing room and meeting young fans after games, a great role model from Killarney. Kerry FC wishes him a full recovery for next season EF: I have been very critical of the FAI officers at HQ for so many bad decisions and direction at national level, while the regular interclub soccer is going so well at a local level. However, the FAI has made one good strategic decision, targeting Friday night as the big one for its LOI games and promoting that with live soccer games on RTÉ. It's that Friday feeling when most workers are free for the weekend and look forward to a night out at a live game and all the social value of that.

IH: Friday night is a good night to promote Kerry FC games. There aren’t many GAA games, particularly big championship games, or basketball for Tralee Warriors, who are big in Tralee, likewise in Killarney with St Paul’s and Cougars. Here in Kerry, the home games at Mounthawk Park are very successful and well attended. It’s a great night out and there is a great atmosphere.

For

the away games, we have built up a very loyal support base of people who travel to faraway venues such as Bray or Ballybofey. There’s great camaraderie and craic on those away trips, as you know yourself.

EF: Your favourite sport?

IH: It has to be hurling, a unique game of unbelievable skills and thrills; nothing quite like it, a marvellous experience.

EF: Your dream job?

IH: Anything to do with sport because it takes centre stage in my life. Even when my wife Eileen and I were planning our wedding, we had to be very choosy about the date, not clashing with any big sporting occasion. God forbid I’d miss out on sport.

EF: Your ambitions?

IH: Follow all sports which I love so much, continuing to keep Terrace Talk to the foreground for listeners to have their say, and I have a bucket list. I want to be there on the big day, reporting live on the action. I've done a fair share of big sporting events, including the Grand National in Aintree, Champions League and Europa League finals, World Snooker finals in the Crucible, World Rally Championships and Formula 1 races. The uncertainty of the final result in a game or race draws me in.

EF: Yes, Ivan, the unpredictability is a reflection of life itself. We can never be sure what is going to happen next. Da de dah… The signature tune is fading, red light is on. You’re on Terrace Talk for the next two hours, following in the footsteps of Dónal Barry, Weeshie Fogarty, and Liam Higgins. Best of luck.

IH: Thanks Eamonn.

Kerry ladies to host Mayo team in Stack Park

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP 2

Kerry v Mayo

Saturday 2pm

Austin Stack Park

Live on TG4 YouTube

The Kerry ladies take their next step on the road back to Croker when they play host to Connacht runners-up Mayo in Round 1 of the All-Ireland SFC group phase on Saturday. The match takes place at noon in O’Moore Park in Portlaoise.

The Kingdom will be favourites to top the group and secure a home quarter-final but they will need to play to their potential against Mayo and against Munster rivals Cork if they are to do so. Their most recent performance against Waterford in the Munster final was below their own high standards so they will be eager to give a good account of themselves in Tralee this weekend. These sides last met at the beginning of March in Swinford where Mark Bourke’s side emerged victorious on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-4. Kerry subsequently went on to win Division 1 while Mayo were rel-

egated to Division 2 with a record of one win and six defeats from seven games. After losing their provincial decider to last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Galway by 0-16 to 1-4, Liam McHale’s team might not be brimming with confidence but they do have some talented individuals who will take minding, such as Sinéad Walsh who got 1-3 against Galway.

Kerry v Mayo will be shown live on the TG4 YouTube channel.

Elsewhere in the championship on Saturday, Galway host Tipperary in Tuam Stadium (2pm) and Meath play Armagh in Páirc Tailteann (3pm).

On Sunday, Munster runners-up Waterford face Leinster champions Dublin in Dungarvan 1.30pm. That fixture will be live on TG4.

Champions crowned at thrilling basketball finals

There was plenty of excitement on offer at Presentation Gym Killarney for the Credit Union Schools Super Sevens Junior Boys Basketball Finals on Wednesday.

Currow and Nagle Rice Milltown both went into the Cup Final undefeated and Currow completed a Grand Slam with a seventh win to take the title. This was a close game throughout until the closing minutes when Nagle Rice resistance was overcome by the more clinical finishing of the Currow boys to secure the silverware on a scoreline of 18-7. MVP was Seamus Lyons.

The Kenmare boys were made to work hard throughout the Shield Final but

they gradually overcame the determined Killarney boys in the second half with their physical advantages taking their toll on the Gaelscoil. St John’s prevailed by 13 points to six. Their MVP was

Emmet Vaughan. Loughquittane came through in the Plate Final game with a strong defence and quick scores on the fast break crucial in overcoming Fossa 16-9. Fossa had

an impress run to the final. The MVP in the Plate Final was Juan Ávila. Both Scoil Naomh Chárthaigh and Gneeveguilla went close to making the Cup Final and they showed why with a great display of skill in a thrilling Bronze Medal contest. Gneeveguilla looked on track to secure victory but the Castleisland boys played to the final buzzer and forced overtime. Again Gneeveguilla looked set for victory in overtime but the Castleisland boys forced their way back into the game from the free throw line. They then got a turnover score in the last seconds to take the win (20-19), setting off great celebrations for Scoil Naomh Chárthaigh. The MVP in this game was Tadgh Broderick.

JOHN JOE NAUGHTON TROPHY FINAL: Killorglin C 0 Killarney Athletic B 4. Goals: Sean O’Connor (2), Alex Kissane, Amir Mambetov. POTM: Trey Hurley. Christy Leahy Park in Tralee was the venue for the U13 Boys Trophy final on the June Bank Holiday weekend. The rain held off thankfully, but a very strong wind had a big impact on the flow of the game each half. Killorglin played with the wind in the first half and put Athletic under pressure in the early stages. The lads defended resolutely however and limited Killorglin to a couple of half chances and played on the counter. Halfway through the half, it paid off as Sean O’Connor finished off an excellent counterattack. The lads grew in confidence and Alex Kissane added a second to give Athletic a strong advantage at half time. Despite a highly spirited effort from Killorglin, the combination of the wind and a superb team performance, Athletic controlled the second half, creating wave after wave of attacks. Sean O’Connor added a second and Amir Mambetov marked his last game for the club, before moving county, with a brilliant finish. Well done to the lads for a great finish to the season and a well-deserved trophy!

U15 HEALY FAMILY CUP: Killarney Celtic 2-0 Inter Kenmare. Jason Harrington, Nikita Tkachenko. Playing their 2nd game in 3 days, Killarney Celtic captured the U15 Healy Family Cup after 2 goals in the 1st half put them in the driving seat. Jason Harrington finished with a deft touch to put Celtic ahead. Shortly before half time Celtic stretched their lead when Nikita Tkachenko hit an absolute belter from outside the area to give the keeper no chance. Inter put the pressure on in the 2nd half but the Celtic defence stood firm to land a 1st trophy for this group. Well done to the players and management on a fine achievement.

U13 JOHN JOE NAUGHTON CUP FINAL: Killarney Celtic 4-3 Iveragh. Sean Doyle 2, Cillian Scannell, Fionn Culloty. Celtic defeated league champions Iveragh in the U13 Cup Final last weekend. Celtic hit the front when a drive from Rowan Murphy fell to Sean Doyle who finished from close range. Sean Doyle doubled the advantage to leave Celtic 2up at the break. Fionn Culloty put Celtic 3up before Iveragh pulled 1 back. Cillian Scannell then went through the defence to finish to the net for 4-1. However Iveragh were not done yet and they responded with 2 goals to force an exciting finish but Celtic held on to take the cup. Well done to the players and management on a fine win.

Killarney Legion GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE FIXTURES: There is a local derby in the County league this weekend with a short trip to Lewis Road this Friday June 6th where there is a 7pm throw in time. The Senior B team played Kenmare Shamrocks this Saturday at 7pm in Direen.

U14 LADIES: The U14 Ladies Green team were in action on Friday evening at home to Corca Dhuibhne for their last Division 2 County League fixture. With a full panel of energetic and determined players, the home side started strongly, showing great pace and excellent distribution. Both teams were evenly matched in the early stages, but the Legion girls held a narrow lead going into half-time. In the second half, the hosts pushed on, finding the back of the net four more times and adding some fine points to their tally. Corca Dhuibhne continued to battle and tested the home defence, but some outstanding defending from the Legion back line kept them at bay. Credit to the Legion girls for a well-deserved win on the night. A big thank you to Corca Dhuibhne for a sporting contest and to the referee for excellent officiating. The team now looks forward to details of their upcoming semi-final.

BAKE SALE/BLITZ: This Saturday June 7th is going to be an action-packed day as we are running an U10 Girls blitz in conjunction with a bake sale. This is a fundraiser for our U15 Ladies Feile team. The action gets underway at 1pm and everyone is asked to please support the day!

U16 LADIES: A huge well done to our U16 girls who were crowned Div 2 East Kerry champions on Wednesday evening in Direen. Facing Beaufort—who had beaten us comprehensively just six weeks ago—our girls were determined to turn things around, and they certainly rose to the occasion. From the first whistle, they set the tone with a fast start, taking an early lead that they held onto right to the final whistle.

Our defence was outstanding—tenacious and fiercely committed. The girls worked the ball cleverly through the middle, creating chances and setting up our forwards to find the net at crucial moments. Captain Molly Cronin proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of a fantastic group of young girls who have shown great character & teamwork throughout the season.

The team now takes a well-earned break for a few weeks to focus on their studies, before returning to action at the end of June for the County League. Thanks to Beaufort for a great sporting contest, Jason O’Brien for officiating so well on the night and finally to Seánie Culloty in Four Star Pizza for looking after the girls so well.

U14 BOYS: Our Under 14 boys travelled all the way to Tarbert to play the divisional side Northern Gaels in division 16 of the County League. The team made up with mostly Under 12 players were very well supplemented with some of the older under 14s. Having played with the wind in the first half, Legion boys were to the fore, scoring some good points and taking their chances. The second half began with lots of action

from both sides and with the aid of a strong breeze Northern Gaels won at the end by the narrowest of margins. Final score - Northern Gaels 4-7 Killarney Legion 3-9.

Dr Crokes GAA

SHL DIV. 2: Final Dr. Crokes 1:15 Lady's Walk 1:12. Our Senior Hurlers claimed the Credit Union County Hurling League Division 2 title after a gruelling encounter against a determined Lady's Walk side, requiring extra-time in difficult conditions in Fitzgerald Stadium on Monday afternoon. Following consistent, winning performances throughout the League, they overcame Abbeydorney in the Semi-Final in Lewis Road last week, with extra-time required to separate the sides. Full-time (AET) score: Dr. Crokes 2-12, Abbeydorney 0-16. Fitzgerald Stadium was the venue for the County Final on Monday afternoon which again went to extra-time against a resolute Lady's Walk side. Grit, determination and a fantastic team performance with brilliant displays by Kieran O'Connor, Conor O'Hare and Willie Allen as well as young guns Adam Byrne, Henry Walsh and Fionn Dineen ensured the Crokes secured a hard-fought victory after extra time.

LGFA: Donal Curtin Cup Dr Crokes senior ladies welcomed Na Gaeil to Lewis Road in Round 5 of the Donal Curtin Cup. With just one defeat, Na Gaeil were top of the table and they got off to a great start with 1:02 inside the first four minutes. However, we quickly settled and led by the returning Leah McMahon and Rheanne O'Shea after their exploits with St. Paul's, as well as a superb goal from Megan Kiely, we led by 6 points at half time. A brilliant save from Jess Leahy and solid defending from Karena O’Leary, Rosin Doherty and Liz Moloney saw us build on our lead and run out comfortable winners. We then travelled to Beaufort in a must win game to qualify for the semifinals. With goals from Seodhna O'Donoghue, Christine Cooper, Ava Sheahan and Claudia O'Donoghue as well as a fine second half display in goals by Emily Coleman, we ran out winners on a scoreline of 6:06 to 2:07. All panel members contributed significantly to the two victories, and we now play Cromane in an away semifinal on the 23rd June.

Fossa GAA

LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 01/06/2025 for a jackpot of €10,650 were 1, 7, 9, 27. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Simon and Beth Coffey, Kathleen Murphy, John Talbot, Keith Wharton, Lottie Murphy. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 2: Fossa came unstuck in a crucial back game in the county league against Gneeveguilla on Friday evening. Fossa had the better of the exchanges in the first half, they were playing well, attacking with pace and had a good spread of scorers. Gneeveguilla opened the scoring with two points, but this was quickly cancelled out by scores from Rian Colleran, Killian and Harry Buckley. Again, Gneeveguilla hit back with two points but a lovely Darren Ryan point and a brace from Tadgh O’Shea put Fossa three ahead. In the 21st minute Eoin Talbot scored a brilliant goal which he quickly followed with a point, Matt Rennie hit another score to put them 1-9 to 0-4 ahead at this stage. Gneeveguilla battled back and got a crucial goal before half time to leave the score 1-10 to 1-07 at the break. The play in the second half wasn’t as free flowing, Gneeveguilla got three early scores, but two Killian Buckley frees kept Fossa ahead. In the 22nd minute a Ted O’Gorman score and a two pointer from Tadgh O’Shea put Fossa four to the good coming down the home straight. Then in the 25th minute Gneeveguilla struck for a goal, and they kicked the equalising point on the stroke of full time. In a welter of excitement, a high ball into the Fossa square wasn’t cleared and Gneeveguilla struck for the killer goal, Fossa did get a chance to attack but couldn’t engineer a goal and Tadgh O’Shea kicked the last score of the game. It was heart break for the home side who probably didn’t deserve to lose but the adage that goals win games rang true on this occasion, final score was Fossa 1-16, Gneeveguilla 3-12. Team: Shane O’Sullivan, Dan O’Connell, Sam Buckley, Anthony O’Keeffe, Rian Colleran 0-1, Eoin Talbot 1-01, Ted O’Gorman 0-1, Matt Rennie 0-1, Darren Ryan 0-1 Dan O’Keeffe, Brian Myers, Harry Buckley 0-1, Michael O’Dwyer, Killian Buckley 0-3, Tadgh O’Shea 0-7, David Butler, Ruari Doyle, Mark Donnellan.

SENIOR LADIES: Fossa Senior Ladies completed the last (earlier postponed) fixture in the group stages of the Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup v Finuge St Senan’s. In this much anticipated home game against a new opponent for us our much-depleted squad took to field. A nice game followed and with chances coming at both ends it was the home team that got the breaks in front of goal and went in 6 scores to 2 up at half time.

A lively second half followed and both goal keepers were busy. An early 2nd half penalty helped Fossa build upon a good lead, and in the end this young team ran out ready winners on a score of 5-09 v 1-07, a final scoreline that doesn’t tell the full story of the game. Fossa Senior Ladies remain unbeaten and top the table in their Group and await Spa in a home semi-final on 23rd June.

MOTHERS AND OTHERS: Our Gaelic 4 Mother & Others sponsored by Aghadoe Heights Hotel team played their 2nd ever game (1st away game) this evening against the mighty Castleisland Desmond’s. It was a great night of footballing friendship and both teams are already looking forward to the return game. Thanks to Desmonds for hosting us and well done to all our players & management.

EAST REGION U16 DIVISION 2B: Beaufort U16 Boys hold nerve in thrilling draw and penalty shootout victory. Scartaglin 2-12 2-12 Beaufort. Beaufort win 4-3 on penalties. Beaufort U16s delivered a performance full of heart, spirit, and resilience in a gripping away clash against Scartaglin on Thursday evening in the East Region U16 Division 2B final. Both teams lined out with 13 players, which led to an open and fast-paced encounter. Beaufort started brightly and played some excellent football in the early stages. Points from Michael Culhane, James Rooney, and Conor Hughes, along with well-finished goals from Luke O’Malley and Michael Culhane gave Beaufort a deserved lead. Scartaglin kept themselves in the contest, responding with a crucial goal just before the break. The halftime score read Beaufort 2-9, Scartaglin 1-9. The second half was a real battle, with chances limited as both defences tightened. Beaufort’s backline stood firm, with Adam Galvin, Harry O’Shea, and Sean O’Sullivan putting in outstanding shifts to contain Scartaglin's threat. Despite their efforts, Scartaglin struck for a second goal late in the game to edge ahead by a single point. However, Beaufort showed real composure and determination, with Leo Allen landing a vital equaliser to level the match at 2-12 apiece. With full time and added time unable to separate the sides, both teams agreed to go to a penalty shootout to decide the winner. Under immense pressure, Beaufort’s penalty takers held their nerve, converting four of their five kicks. The decisive moment came from goalkeeper Freddie Prendiville, who produced a superb save to hand Beaufort a 4-3 victory on penalties after an absorbing and hard-

fought encounter. It was a performance full of character, teamwork, and determination — a fantastic effort from the entire Beaufort panel. Well done to all involved! The Beaufort U16 panel was Freddie Prendiville, Killian Breen, Leo Allen, Darragh Doyle, Luke Foley, Adam Galvin, Calum Galvin, Ronan Coffey, Luke Savage, Ruairi O’Sullivan, Conor Hughes, Harry O’Shea, Michael Culhane, James Rooney, Sean O'Sullivan, Benen O’Rourke, Luke O’Malley, Sean Landers and Marcus Kissane.
