National Parks and Wildlife Service officials Eamon Meskell and Niall Ó Donnchú will also feature on the programme that will include interviews with local jarveys and boatmen.

Cameraman Mat Kelly filmed the tidy towns volunteers for on the Nationwide special which will air on Tuesday July 17. The programme will also showcase Killarney to potential visitors including the shots of the National Park and the famous lakes.

“This will air at peak time and at a time of the year when people are thinking about what to do and where they should go,”

said Tidy Towns stalwart Johnny Maguire.

Killarney teacher visits European Commission

Maria Ryan, a teacher in St. Oliver's National School, was one of several primary teachers to enjoy a visit to the European Commission in Brussels.

European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness welcomed a group of 22 Irish primary school teachers on Wednesday.

The teachers participate in the Blue Star Programme, teaching Irish primary school children all about the EU in a fun and interactive way.

This was part of a study visit organised by the European Commission Representation in Ireland, in partnership with the European Parliament Liaison

Office in Ireland, and the European Movement Ireland.

It also included a day of seminars with officials in the European Commission, a meeting with Irish MEPs, and a visit to Ireland’s Permanent Representation to the EU.

The Blue Star Programme is an initiative of the Irish Government, supported by the European Commission and the European Parliament. It is managed by the European Movement Ireland.

JD Sports seeking location for new Killarney store?

Could sports retail giant JD Sports be coming to Killarney?

No official announcement has been made yet, however JD Sports is currently advertising on recruitment websites for a manager for its Killarney store. In March last year, Nike, the flagship store at the Killarney Outlet Centre closed with the loss of around 20 jobs.

NEWS BRIEFS...

Annual Aghadoe Mass

The annual Aghadoe Graveyard mass has been rescheduled to Monday July 24.

The mass will take place at 8pm and a bus will depart High St at 6pm in time for the 8pm ceremony.

Barleymount water

The persistent outages in Barley-

mount will be addressed this year, Kerry County Council has confirmed. The problems in the area are due to a very problematic section of rising main between Crohane pumphouse and Barleymount Reservoir. This section of rising main is due to be replaced later this year. Construction is scheduled to start in October 2023.

Despite many new stores opening at the Outlet Centre since Nike’s departure, including the re-locating Mods & Minis which opened this week, there has been, so far, no replacement, for the sports brand.

While JD Sports would be a welcome addition to the shopping centre and an ideal replacement for Nike, it all speculation for now.

T OWN TALK

Live, Loud and Outdoors. MORE PLEASE!!!

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce along with local business sponsors can once again take a bow after running another hugely successful event.

What’s the ‘quack’ with Killarney’s newest store?

Have you ever woken up one morning and said to yourself, "I need more rubber ducks in my life"? If so, then it's your ducky day.

Killarney Duck Store is to officially open its doors on High Street this week and the people behind the new store have been busy stocking the shelves with an unimaginable assortment of ducks.

From classy ducks in tuxedos to Star Wars inspired ducks, they've got it all. They even have a section for duck enthusiasts who believe in fashion-forward feathered friends and Fashionista ducks wearing mini sunglasses and tiny feather boas.

The store's grand opening is due to take place on July 8 with a ribbon cutting at 10am.

Free Killarney Duck Store Tote bags will be given out to the first 20 customers and there will be a free raffle entry for every customer for a chance to win a Giant Duck.

Balloons, Cupcakes and loads of rubber ducks promises to have locals and visitors ‘quacking’ up with laughter.

The new business owner Elaine Burke would be known locally for running BE Pro Therapy, a successful Physical Therapy & Osteopathy business in town

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week Elaine said the idea was first ‘floated’ while on holidays in Italy in February of this year.

“My kids begged me to go into a duck store in Milan and once in the store I was hooked! We bought some ducks and after we walked out of the store I said to them that is was a good business idea and its steamrolled from there,” she said.

“This store is because of my kids and for my kids and they have worked incredibly hard helping me get it up and running and we are delighted to share a little quackiness with everyone who walks in our doors"

The store is certainly going to add a ‘splash’ of colour and fun to High St. which is already one of the towns busiest thoroughfares.

So, whether you're a collector, a duck aficionado, or just need a little quackme-up, make sure you waddle on down to the The Killarney Duck store on Saturday.

The 4th of July parade is one of four flagship events the Chamber runs each year and is now a mainstay in the local events calendar. I am convinced that there is no other town in Ireland that runs so many magnificent events throughout the year as Killarney.

Although a majority of activities took place on Tuesday, it was Monday’s schedule that caught my imagination. As the sounds of live music offered up by Truly Diverse reverberated around Killarney House and Gardens on Monday evening, it became clear to me that outdoor gigs have a distinct and unrivalled charm about them.

It brought me back to younger days and memories of the Killarney Summerfest, which attracted tens of thousands of visitors to town each year. Brian Adams, Westlife, Pink, Elton John and Meat Loaf all headlined at Fitzgerald Stadium. I will shamefully admit, Pink was actually a guilty pleasure of mine throughout my early teens, her music coincided with a skate boarder phase I was going through and her CD, along with Avril Lavigne and whatever blink182 were playing got great mileage on the Walkman. I remember begging my late mom to buy me a ticket for that Pink gig in the Fitzgerald Stadium (to no avail) which would have been selling for about €40 or €50 at the time.

I kicked up a big fuss on the day of the gig and managed to shake €20 out of her. Once I figured nobody was willing to sell me their ticket for half the price they paid for it I had to come up with another plan. We were living on Rock Road at the time so Dalton’s Ave and Marion’s Terrace was familiar territory. There is a big silver gate behind the town end goal and I thought I might be able to slide under the gate if it was unattended, which to my disappointment, it was not. I did somehow manage to convince the security guy guarding the gate to let an unattended 14/15 year old into the gig unsupervised. It is funny, I remember that so clearly but cannot recall much of the gig at all.

Reigniting Summerfest may be a step too far, but more outdoor gigs such as those on Monday night at Killarney House and Gardens would be brilliant events if ran throughout the Summer. While traditional indoor venues have their allure, and the INEC does a wonderful job of attracting big ticket names, there is an undeniable draw for more niche, family friendly outdoor gigs. These al fresco events foster a real sense of community and provide local accomplished and aspiring artists with a unique platform to express their talent. Our parks and open spaces are underutilised and underserviced. We need to tap into the fantastic surroundings we have here in Killarney which would enhance the live music scene in town. We only have to look to Marley Park or Malahide Castle in Dublin to see what can be achieved.

The ambiance created at Killarney House and Gardens on Monday just cannot be replicated indoors. These events not only create memorable experiences for us all, but can provide a stage for local talent, energise our public spaces, and promote inclusivity. With all of those positives, surely we can put our heads together to create a series of outdoor summer gigs that everyone can enjoy.

Still no movement on new FarranforeKillarney road plans

Transport Infrastructure Ireland have yet to give any indication on the preferred route corridor for the new Farranfore to Killarney road.

Several options went to public consultation last summer and the TII said they would announce the preferred route before the end of last year. This did not happen and so far there has been no indication as to when the announcement will be made.

Mayor Brendan Cronin raised the issue again at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

An council official told the meeting: “The

2023 allocation of €100,000 for the scheme is insufficient to progress the scheme and in this regard, Kerry County Council has sought additional funding from the TII. Furthermore, Kerry County Council is not in a position to release the other corridor options as they form a necessary part of the planning consent process. The TII have not given us any indication of a timeline of when the process will be completed.”

Hammer time for Billy

Well-known local property auctioneer Billy Hennigan will turn his hand to car sales on Sunday.

The Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club is hosting its annual Classic and Vintage car show at Killarney Racecourse on Sunday.

A supporter of the club has donated a Renault Megane Cabriolet and Billy will auction the car with 100% of funds raised going to the Mater Hospital foundation.

“Along with the usual cars, jeeps and

motorbikes that are 20 years and older there is going to be the auction of the Renault,” said club secretary Richard O’Donoghue. “Don't forget any Landrover Defenders of any age on the day will be entered to win a stay in Loch Lein House and €100 voucher for Stryker Landrovers.”

The club thanked Brian Glover of BG Motors who prepared the car for NCT ahead of the auction.

Gates open for show cars at 10am and to the public from 11am.

New pedestrian crossing for Mission Road

A new pedestrian crossing linking the Mission Road entrance to Beech Road car park could being construction in September this year.

Newly appointed Mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin has be pushing for the provision of crossing for years.

It now seems that this will become a reality.

At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting he asked: “When will construction begin of the vitally important crossing on Mission Road from Beech Road Car Park to the Killarney House entrance?”

A council office replied: “The Feasibility Report, Design Report and Safety Audit as required by Transport infrastructure Ireland have been completed. Kerry

County Council is finalising documentation and it is expected that this will be advertised by mid-July, with a view to present a report to the members at the September Meeting. Subject to approval, this will allow for the works to commence in late September or early October.”

Pedestrian underpass for by pass moves a step closer

The public consultation process on the proposed pedestrian under at the Bypass Road will begin this month.

It is hoped to build an active travel link, including N22 underpass, from Fitzgerald Stadium to Killarney Celtic. This is part of an extended scheme to make the bypass sager for all road users

Overflowing bins on Glebe Lane to be monitored

Killarney Municpial District will begin a more proactive enforcement of the Bye Laws around the of commercial waste containers in the vicinity of the Glebe Car Park.

Following the Irish Businesses Against Litter (IBAL) survey 2022, which placed Killarney 28 out of 40 towns and cities surveyed, and the commentary specifically identifying the Glebe waste container storage practices in the town, engagements with businesses storing their commercial waste containers in the Glebe area began.

The KMD Office met with 41 businesses who had been storing waste containers in the Glebe Car Park, in one-to-one meetings to identify the issues businesses were having, to assist in moving towards solutions and to communicate their responsibilities under The County of Kerry Segregation, Storage and Presentation of Household and Commercial Waste ByeLaws.

“During this process a number of businesses indicated they are operating from buildings which do not have access to a

yard, are older structures with limited access, or have been unable to secure an alternative storage area on privately owned land. A service has been offered to these businesses in the Glebe Car Park in order for them to comply with the County of Kerry Segregation, Storage and Presentation of Household and Commercial Waste Bye-Laws 2019,” said a council official.

“These 24 businesses are not required to take up this offer of the Glebe Commercial Waste Storage Area licence. Businesses have at all turns in this project been advised and encouraged to seek alternative arrangements where possible, individually or collectively, for their businesses’ own waste management practices. Charges applied to the Glebe Licenced Waste Container Storage Area are structured to be as affordable as possible, given the cost of storage area in Killarney town, and the provision to recoup development costs incurred by Kerry County Council.”

The official was replying to a motion out forward by Cllr Niall O’Callaghan at this week’s kmd meeting.

and includes the left only arrangement from Lewis Road to the bypass that was introduced late last year.

“Subject to Transport Infrastructure Ireland approval and endorsement of the route by the landowner, it is expected that the consultation process for will commence in July,” a council official told this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Spectacular week of festivities in Killarney town

Killarney became the undisputed fun capital of the country over the past week with the town playing host to the annual Ring of Kerry charity cycle and the spectacular 4th of July festival.

Thousands of people flocked to the town for the dual festivities with 4,500 people participating in the cycle on Saturday while the streets were packed four deep for the gala Independence Day parade on Tuesday night.

Even the weather played its part for the 175km cycle with no rain recorded, although the wind in coastal areas and on Moll’s Gap proved quite testing for the charity champions that took to the saddle.

There was a real party atmosphere in the town before, during and after the cycle with a huge demand for the open air screening of the Kerry v Tyrone championship encounter in the Beech Road car park close to the finish line on Mission Road.

Hotels, restaurants and pubs reported a rip-roaring trade for the cycle which has again raised tens of thousands of euro for benefiting charities.

When the bicycles were put back in the rack, Killarney turned its attention to the 4th of July celebrations and what a gala celebration it turned out to be.

Music and other quality entertainment acts filled the town from early afternoon when the flag-raising ceremony, at which recently elected Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin officiated, took place at the town hall but the undoubted highlight was the bumper parade which wound its way through the packed streets on Tuesday night.

Incredibly elaborate floats, marching bands, cheerleaders, Disney characters and colourful flag-bearers took to the streets and there was a special guest appearance by American footballers from Georgia Tech, including star kicker David Shanahan who hails from Castleisland.

The Orange County Ancient Order of Hibernians pipe and drum band made the long trek from the US to participate and

they were joined on the night by the Gleneagle Brass Band and marching bands from Millstreet and Blarney.

This year’s 4th of July festival was significantly extended to become a threeday celebration of Killarney’s close and long-established links with the USA.

On Sunday evening there was a high quality dramatisation of the life and times of the McShain and Bourn Vincent families to mark their generosity in donating Killarney National Park, Killarney House and Gardens and so much more to the town.

The event – featuring and highlighting outstanding local talent – was held in the courtyard of Killarney House and close on 150 guests were treated to a feast of music, song and poetry.

On Monday night Killarney House and Gardens also played host to an open air concert featuring hugely popular local band Truly Diverse and that was followed by an open air screening of hit musical

Mamma Mia which attracted close on 1,500 people.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, who organised the festival in association with Kerry County Council, thanked the numerous dedicated volunteers that helped with the smooth running of all events and praised local businesses for playing their part by decorating their premises with a US theme. Visitors were particularly impressed by the Flesk Restaurant on Main Street –which has long links with the American Legion – as the exterior of the building was spectacularly festooned with American flags and red, white and balloons and it really captured the spirit of the occasion.

The Kerry Diocesan Youth Service has established its first Family Centre in Killarney.

The newly established KDYS Family Centre will offer a nurturing family home environment, space for play and a fully functioning kitchen, allowing for more meaningful and natural quality contact between children and their families.“For the past two years, KDYS has been providing Tusla funded supervised family access to children and parents, to support quality, meaningful contact between biological parents and children in the Care System. This service is available to a very limited group of families who are referred to the service by Tusla Chil-

McShain and Bourn Vincent families remembered

A special event at Killarney House Courtyard, on Sunday, depicted the lives of the McShain and Bourn Vincent families who resided in Killarney in the 20th century.

Hosted by National Parks and Wildlife Service and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, the event highlighted the beauty, natural and built resources the town has as a world class event location.

Killarney has been fortunate and very grateful for the philanthropic generosity of the McShain family of Killarney House and Gardens and Bourne Vincent family of Muckross House. Their generosity enabled Killarney and its hinterland to flourish as ‘one of the best playgrounds in the world’.

Killarney National Park is the bedrock on which tourism was founded, visited by millions when the McShain and Bourne Vincent families donated the lands to the state and people of Ireland.

The Killarney Advertiser has published many articles from

Killarney local historian Damien Switzer over the years, advocating for recognition of McShain's immeasurable contribution to Killarney. We now believe this idea has the backing of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry County Council, local politicians, and NPWS. We will keep a keen eye on its progress and bring you regular updates.

Registering the birth of your baby

The birth of a baby is a joyous event however, there are a number of practicalities to be considered and registering the birth is one of the tasks that need to be completed

What happens when my baby is born?

A Birth Notification Form (Form BNF/01) is usually completed with the parent(s) by hospital staff (in the case of hospital births), or by a doctor or midwife (in home births), to guarantee that accurate information is recorded. It outlines the information to be recorded in the Register of Births. If your child is born in hospital, the form is sent to the Registrar's office, letting the Registrar know that a birth has occurred.

If you had a hospital birth, you should wait 3 weeks after the birth before booking an appointment to register the birth (for a hospital birth only). If your baby was born at home, you can book an appointment at any time.

South Kerry siblings sentenced for fraud in US

The former CEO of Navillus has been given six months in prison for his role in a scheme that New York prosecutors say cheated construction unions out of more than $1 million.

Donal O’Sullivan was sentenced on Friday and ordered to report to prison on November 13. His sister, Helen O’Sullivan, the former treasurer at the

company, was given two years of probation while former comptroller, Padraig Naughton, faces one year in prison. The aforementioned were convicted in October 2021 on multiple counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, embezzlement from employee benefits funds, submission of false remittance reports to union benefits funds and conspiracy to commit those crimes.

The sentences were handed down

through the judge after the court found that the unions lost out on $1.2 million.

“The sentences reflect the Court’s understanding of the context of the case given Donal and Helen’s lifelong service to others,” Ilene Jaroslaw, an attorney for O’Sullivan, said in a statement.

“Both Donal and Helen are fundamentally good people who still have more to contribute to the good of society.”

Senior RTÉ reporter forced to work in toilet

In the never ending RTÉ sage, a senior reporter had to do live on-air interviews from cafe toilets in London due to cost cutting measures, at the same time as the broadcaster were paying thousands of euros a year for membership of a private members’ club there.

New revelations on spending this week also showed that RTE splashed out €5K on 200 pairs of Havaianas flip flops and €2K on balloons for a summer party for “agencies and clients."

Last week it was revealed that thousands more were spent on events including €13,000 on Bruce Springsteen tickets for an agency event, €1,300 for 20 clients at an Amy Schumer show, €23,000 for “EU football finals”, €3,076 on House of Fraser vouchers, €2,770 for Ireland v England Six Nations rugby, €4,568 listed as “alcohol” with no description and €769 at the Other Voices festival.

The scandal shows no sign of letting up with the Chair of the board Siún Ní Raghallaigh coming out on Wednesday and saying confidence in the RTÉ Executive has been eroded and there "is a high probability that more information will emerge in the days and weeks ahead".

Mexico mayor marries alligator

found in Mexico and Central and South America.

The traditional ceremony, which has been held for 230 years, commemorates the peace between the Chontal and Huave indigenous groups, with the mayor, representing the Chontal

king, marrying the reptile, symbolising a Huave princess, in a union of the two communities.

Local tradition calls the caiman the “princess girl”, with the mayor saying during the ritual: “I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can’t have a marriage without love… I yield to marriage with the princess girl.”

Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, a small town in Mexico, has married a reptile in a traditional ritual believed to bring good luck to his people. He tied the knot with a female caiman, an alligator-like reptile, which can be

Cocaine found in White House

A white powder found inside the White House late on Sunday last was identified by Washington's fire department and emergency services as cocaine

The powder was said to be found in the West Wing of the iconic residence which is attached to the executive mansion where President Joe Biden lives. It houses the Oval Office, the cabinet room and press area, and offices and workspace for the president's staff. It is said that hundreds of people work in or come through the West Wing regularly.

The Secret Service said on Tuesday that an "unknown item" had been found in work space within the West Wing on Sunday, leading to the temporary closing of the White House complex.

"On Sunday evening, the White House complex went into a precautionary closure as officers from the Secret Service Uniformed Division investigated an unknown item found inside a work area," A preliminary test indicated a white powder found inside the White House was indeed cocaine but authorities have sent the sample to a lab for further testing and the Secret Service are investigating.

Scooter wins ugliest dog competition

Meet Scooter. A delightfully scruffy-looking pooch who is mostly absent of any fur, bar on his head where the wild, mismatched grey clumps of fur stand unapologetically on his little ceann. Posing for pictures last friday with his tongue hanging aimlessly out the side of his mouth, Scooter managed to scoop the most prestigious dog award that no owner wants to win.

The 7 year old Chinese Crested dog received first place at the “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest in Petaluma, California. The nearly 50-year-old event is held to show that every dog is uniquely beautiful and celebrate the imperfections that make all dogs special. The competition

Fears grow for false flag attack on Zaporizhzhia Plant

Earlier this week, Intelligence chiefs and Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelenskyy this week warned that the nuclear plant has been mined with explosives and Russia could be planning a false flag attack.

Speaking this week, Mr Zelenskyy said "Now we have information from our intelligence that the Russian troops have placed objects resembling explosives on the roof of several power units of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. "Perhaps to simulate an attack on the plant. Perhaps they have some other

scenario."

Pointing to how serious Ukrainian officials are taking these reports the Ukrainian government released instructions on social media on how to leave a radiation zone.

The International Atomic Energy Agency came out a few days ago and said there were no signs of explosives being laid there but with what happened to the Kakhovka dam a month ago locals are heightened with reports of Ukrainians trying to leave the country with queues at the border crossing to Moldova running for two miles.

is also a platform for dog lovers to advocate for adoption.

Putting his unconventional appearance aside, Scooters life is one of survival. Born with two deformed hind legs his ability to walk was hindered and after being saved by a volunteer from the Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) rescue group he now walks with his two front legs with an attached rolling harness carrying his behind.

Years of walking on his front legs are taking a toll but with some help from funds raised from friends and rescue groups, Scooter has been able to get therapy and a brand-new cart, allowing him to enjoy his time in the park while welcoming any outstretched hand.

“Never give up” – Lily Daly Foundation launches fundraising challenge

The foundation launched its inaugural fundraising event, Lily’s Pink Challenge which involves a majestic 60 km cycle through the Gap of Dunloe, followed by a 10 km run/walk within Killarney National Park.

This event takes place on September 16 starting and finishing at Killarney Race Course, with all proceeds from this event going towards the Heart Centre in Crumlin Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald house in Dublin, both of which help and support sick children and their families and have a very strong association to the Lily Daly Foundation and the Daly family.

This event is open to all levels of participants, from experienced cyclists and runners to those that want to support a worthy event or those that just want a fresh

new challenge, be that the 60km cycle or a 10km run or walk or indeed those that want the ultimate challenge to complete both wonderful challenges.

Launching Lily’s Pink Challenge last week Kerry football legend, Kieran Donaghy said: “I was aware of Lily Daly’s unique challenge and medical struggles back in 2019/2020 and the extraordinary lengths her family went to cure Lily. Therefore, when I heard that the Daly family set up the Lily Daly Foundation in memory of Lily and with the aim to help and support other children and families

experiencing life altering heart-medical conditions, I was delighted to get involved and lend my support. As a father myself, I can only imagine the heartbreak the Daly family experienced losing Lily and how brave and inspiring it is to see what they are now doing here.”

Lily’s mom Caroline Daly said: “This is both an emotional and daunting experience for us as a family. But, we are determined to face such new challenges with bravery and determination just like our amazing daughter Lily always did and to help other children and families facing serious medical challenges similar to the journey we travelled. So, we now encourage people to take on Lily’s Pink Challenge and aim to complete the cycle, or the run/walk or indeed both events. Remember, as it always was with our

Lily and is now the motto of the Lily Daly Foundation, ‘Never Give Up’.”

To take on Lily’s Pink Challenge participants can go to www.lilydalyfoundation. ie and register for this exciting event through the Gap of Dunloe-Molls Gap and Killarney National Lakes and Park.

The Lily Daly Foundation’s primary mission and purpose is to support children and their parents when in hospital with heart related issues. Lily Daly was born in 21 June 2019 and suffered from Pulmonary Vein Stenosis, a very rare condition affecting the heart and surrounding arteries. Unfortunately, after frequent visits to Crumlin, major heart surgery in both Crumlin and the Presbyterian Hospital in New York, Lily passed away on the 26 February 2021.

Killarney’s connection with Rolls Royce

Next weekend Kerry Motor Club will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the first closed road motorsport event in Kerry.

On July 15, 1903, Charles Rolls won the Kerry Hillclimb in Ballyfinnane. He went on to become a founding father of the Rolls Royce Motor Company but it could have a very different outcome in Killarney.

On his way to Killarney his Mors racing car broke its front suspension somewhere near Moll’s Gap. Blacksmith Jimmy Shea of High St fixed

the car and Rolls was so impressed with his work that he offered him a job managing the forge in the planned factory.

It is reputed that Jimmy said: “Herself has never been to Tralee, never mind up sticks and go to England.” And there ended the possibility that one of the world’s greatest car manufacturers could today be known as the Rolls-O’Shea Motor Car Company.

In the meantime, local machinery collector and historian Brendan Griffin was able to present one of the last items ever made in Jimmy’s forge to his direct descendant Tim O’Shea.

Italy clamps down on the use of e-scooters

The Italian government have tightened road safety laws, announcing a crackdown on the use of electric scooters on city streets.

Under the new regulations riders will have to wear a helmet and have insurance and the scooters themselves will now require a registration plate. Furthermore it will be forbidden to ride two-wheelers outside of built up areas or to leave them parked haphazardly on pavements.

There were over 45,000 rental e-scooters in Italy in 2021, according to the Sharing Mobility Observatory. They have proved a hit, particularly in cities with heavy traffic or few cycle routes,

but drivers complain they are dangerous, and they are regularly left blocking footpaths or disabled access routes in major cities.

From 2020 to 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics (Istat), road accidents involving e-scooters rose from 564 to 2,101 and injuries from 518 to 1,980. Of these, 1,903 were drivers, 77 passengers and 127 pedestrians. In 2021, there were 10 victims, one of whom was a pedestrian.

ISTAT data also show that in Italy, in

2021, only 13% of electric scooter users previously travelled by car. Before the advent of scooters, most users travelled on foot, by bicycle or public transport. Parisians voted in April this year to ban rental scooters in their city. At home, Minister Eamon Ryan signed the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 on the 27th June last. The Electric scooter regulations must, under EU law, be notified to the European Commission for review, to ensure that they comply with single market rules before they come into effect. his process takes a minimum of 12 weeks so it is likely that by Autumn Ireland will have new laws for e-scooters and other powered personal transporters. DNG report shows residential property prices still rising, but at a slower pace

Annual rate of house price inflation moderates further in year to June 2023 as first time buyers dominate the market.

According to the latest residential market review from leading property advisors DNG, the annual rate of house price inflation continued to ease during the first half of the year. At a national level (excluding Dublin) the annual rate of growth in prices eased back to 3.4% for the year to June 2023, falling back from a rate of 7.6% recorded on the DNG National Price Gauge (NPG) in the year to December 2022. The annual rate for year ending June 2023 is in sharp contrast to the same period in the previous year when prices nationally (excluding Dublin) rose by 12%.

According to the DNG NPG, the average

price of a resale property nationally (excluding Dublin) rose by 2.3% in the first six months of this year, bringing the average value of a property to €270,744 up from €264,775 at the end of December 2022.

On a regional basis, the NPG results show that the annual rate of price growth in the year to June was strongest in the West region (+5.0%) and Midlands (+4.2%) but below average in the South East region (+1.7%) however, all regions saw price positive house price inflation in the year to June 2023. However, the pace of price inflation moderated significantly in all re-

gions of the country in the year to June when compared to the year to December 2022.

An analysis by DNG of the buyers of resale properties in the first 6 months of the year confirms that first time buyers remain the most active players in the market, accounting for one in every two purchases of second hand properties, highlighting both the strength of underlying demand from first time buyers keen to own their own home and their willingness to purchase in the resale market despite the plethora of supports targeted at first time buyers of newly constructed homes. The continued lack of affordable property options in the new homes sector for buyers remains part of the issue ,

meaning first time buyers are seeking out homes in the resale market at the price point and in localities where they wish to reside.

Commenting on the results, DNG Director of Research Paul Murgatroyd said, “The latest results of the DNG price gauges confirm that residential property prices across the country are still rising however, the pace at which they are doing so has moderated again, suggesting we may well be closer to another peak in the market. Affordability continues to be an issue impacting buyers, particularly in Dublin and the Mid-East Regions due to strong price growth in the last two to three years”.

NEWS 43 7.07.2023

New Chiropractic clinic opens on Clover Lane

Ever since they met 12 years ago, Leon and Amba have talked of opening a clinic together. Moving to Killarney in 2023, this became their reality with Kaha Chiropractic opening on 7 Clovers Lane on May 15

Amba is the Clinic Manager, looking after everything from scheduling, reception, social media, advertising and accounts, allowing Leon to focus on what he does best, providing first-class chiropractic care to each person who visits the clinic.

Leon has been providing chiropractic care since 1995, when he was awarded his Doctorate degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, USA.

He was drawn to the profession after experiencing the healing ability of chiropractic following a motocross accident as a teenager.

Originally from New Zealand, Leon moved to Ireland when he graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic, opening two chiropractic clinics in Kin-

Lyme disease treatment unit ruled out at University Hospital Kerry

sale and Douglas, County Cork, where he worked for 18 years. He met his wife, Amba, in Kinsale.

In 2014 Leon and Amba moved to New Zealand to spend some time with Leon’s family and to provide Amba the opportunity to experience New Zealand lifestyle and culture. While in New Zealand Leon worked at two busy chiropractic clinics in Hastings and Waipukurau.

After eight years in New Zealand, Leon, Amba returned to Ireland making Killarney their new home.

“The outdoor lifestyle and proximity to amazing beaches were a definite plus, while still having a busy town with great venues, restaurants and events on offer,” said Amba. The name Kaha Chiropractic honours and reflects Leon’s Maori heritage.

Appointments can be made online through www.kahachiropractic.ie or by calling the clinic on 085 1429304.

It is hugely disappointing that the Health Service Executive refuse to recognise the need for a dedicated Testing and Treatment Centre for Lyme disease at University Hospital Kerry, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill.

Councillor Cahill has received a negative response to his call for such a facility from the HSE Area Director of Public Health, who concludes that “a dedicated testing and treatment centre in University Hospital Kerry would not be feasible at this time.”

“In a typically long winded response from the HSE, which gives great detail of the danger posed in contracting Lyme disease, a dedicated Testing and Treatment Centre at University Hospital Kerry is ruled out, due to lack of supporting statistical evidence, in a short paragraph at the end. This is despite the fact that they confirm deer have been identified as primary hosts of the ticks that carry this disease and that people may come in contact with them from ‘grassy fronds

in particular in infested environments,” said Councillor Cahill.

“Killarney National Park and surrounding areas is home to an extremely large Deer herd, and deer are recognised as primary carriers of the tick that can spread Lyme disease. It is obvious then that they infest the grass where the deer live and feed and that they pose a risk to humans who frequent the area. In Kerry, you face a higher risk of contracting Lyme disease due to the presence of large numbers of deer and all the statistics in the world will not disprove that.”

“The Health and Safety Executive need to join the real world and recognise the very obvious evidence, that Lyme disease is at high levels in Kerry, is difficult to diagnose and is difficult and expensive to treat. A dedicated Testing and Treatment Centre in University Hospital Kerry, not alone makes sense but is urgently required there. The effects of Lyme on those infected is horrendous and I will not rest until it is taken seriously.”

No words we write can ever say

How much we miss ye everyday

No one knows the grief we bare

When the family gather and ye’re not there.

We laugh, we talk, we play the part

But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart

The sorrow we feel we can never explain

And the ache in our hearts will always remain.

Forever in our thoughts and prayers, your loving family.

Anniversary Mass is on Saturday 8th July at 6:15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

In loving memory of John D. Nolan

Late of 3 St. Anne’s Road, Killarney Whose Anniversary occurs on 7th July.

To My Brother

Miss you and love you always Jesus came to the foot of the bed These are the words we are sure he said You suffered enough, take my hand And come with me to a better land.

So keep your arms around him Lord And give him special care Make up for what he suffered and all that seemed unfair.

Please forgive a falling tear A constant wish that you were here Others have lost like this we know But he was our loved one and we loved him so.

Loved and missed by your twin sister Elizabeth, husband Donie and family

“Come home with me”, he quietly said “Your pain will leave you soon Just close your eyes and take my hand

We’ll quietly leave the room.”

Sadly missed by your sister Mary, brother-in-law Teddy and family.

8TH ANNIVERSARY FLEMING (NEE O’SULLIVAN)

In loving memory of Julianne Fleming (Nee O’Sullivan) 79 St Brendan’s Terrace Killarney Who died on 9th July 2015.

Juls A heart Of Gold

The 9th of July 2015 was a lovely day, and I was on my way. To visit my wife in hospital, in Cork that day.

Julianne was just finished her dinner, I made great time.

I asked her “how she was” she said, “thank god I am fine”. The nurse came in and said I have good news for you. You’re leaving us today. The ambulance is going to Tralee, and you will be there for a few days.

We both shed a few tears, she said “Thank God and St Anthony, they are always there for me”. I gave her a little kiss and said, “I will see you tonight in Tralee”.

About 5.30 that day two Guards came to my house, I said “Can I help You”.

They said,” Can we come in”, I said “Walk through”.

We had a few words and then they said, “We have very sad news for you”. “Your wife Julianne passed away in the ambulance on the bypass” I said, “this can’t be true”. I said” I gave her a hug about 3 hours ago and said goodbye”.

They asked me if I was ok, and I began to cry.

They said, “are you alone” I said, “my daughter is having a rest”. I said, “I will call her, tell her to get dressed”. I went upstairs and knocked on her door and said, “Mam is dead”. She opened the door and said, “Dad do you realize what you just said”.

A female and a male guard, they were great and stayed for some time.

They asked me “could I go to the funeral home at 6.30pm, I said “that will be fine”. We went down and I had to identify the body of my beautiful wife.

It was the saddest thing I ever had to do in my life.

I said, “Can I have a few minutes with Julianne on my own”. I put my hand on her hand and said” wake up and I will take you home”. We said prayers, and when we came home, people were coming and going.

At around midnight we were there on our own. People brought hot and cold food, Noel O Sullivan (R.I.P) gave me his house for people to stay. At times like this you know your genuine neighbours and friends, they were helpful in every way. On the day of Julianne’s mass, we thanked God for her past.

Fr Jim Linehan who celebrated a very meaningful mass. Thanks to Tadghie, choir and O Shea’s undertakers, who did it so well. And the people who attended the mass and burial, gave Julianne a lovely farewell. We stopped at The Caragh restaurant, Julianne worked there for 28 years and made great friends. Then on to Aghadoe where Julianne’s last journey would end. They brought the coffin and laid in on the grave. I said to my family “we must be brave”.

Fr Jim said the rosary and sprinkled holy water on her coffin. And I said to myself” this is one day that will never be forgotten”. When they covered the grave, I said “this truly the end”. To a wife and a mother, our forever friend.

Julianne was someone I could talk to, that no one can replace. She was someone I could laugh with, till the tears ran down my face. The next time I meet you Julianne will be at Heavens door. And when I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore. I will put my arms around you and see your smiling face. Julianne, then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place. There are lovely wives and mothers, that’s very true. But Julianne I can only speak for myself, thank God, I married you. Good times and bad, happy, and sad.

Julianne, we can’t complain about the life and the family we had. We did our best for our family, that’s all any mother and father can do. Julianne, I didn’t waste 54 years of my life with you.

Your loving husband Donie XX ***

Mother

On the 9th of July 2015, our hearts were broken, it was a very sad day. Our beautiful mother Julianne suddenly passed away. If there was a road to Heaven, we would have driven up that day. And asked God to give us back our mam, and we could carry on the same old way. They say memories are golden

To some maybe that is true

But we never wanted memories

All we ever wanted was you.

Mam, we want to tell you something

So, there won’t be any doubt

You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to do without.

Always missed by you loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. xx

Anniversary Mass is on Sunday 9th July at 12 noon in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

7TH ANNIVERSARY LONG

In loving memory of Noreen Long Inches, Rathmore, Co. Kerry Who died on 6th July 2016. R.I.P.

We don’t think of her as gone away her journey’s just begun Life holds so many facets this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days or years.

Think how she must be wishing that we could know today how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched For nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much.

Always loved and remembered by your daughters Geraldine and Lisa, Son Timothy, sons-in-law John and Anthony, daughter-in-law Paula and your loving grandchildren.

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. ES

In loving memory of Anne O’ Sullivan

Late of Knockeragh

Who died on 7th July 2003.

My life is but a weaving between my Lord and me I cannot choose the colours He worketh steadily.

Often times he weaveth sorrow and I, in foolish pride forget that He seeth the upper and I the under side.

Not till the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly shall God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful in the weaver’s skillful hand as the threads of gold and silver in the pattern he has planned.

Still loved, still missed by all your loving family.

Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. I feel confident my prayer shall be answered. (Make request). This novena is to be said at the same time every hour for nine consecutive hours – one day. Promised publication, never fails. SL

EQUALITY

Male players show solidarity with female counterparts

This week, Kerry’s male Gaelic footballers joined forces with the Kerry ladies’ team to call on the GAA to accelerate the drive for equality in their shared sport.

In a powerful image posted to social media, GAA stars including David Clifford, Seánie O’Shea and Paul Murphy stood shoulder to shoulder with LGFA stars like Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Síofra O’Shea and Anna Galvin at the Kerry Centre of Excellence in Currans.

Similarly, some Kilkenny hurlers also posed for a photo with Kilkenny camogie players at Nowlan Park.

The photographs coincided with the release of an official statement signed by all 68 male intercounty football and hurling captains, expressing their “full support for [their] female colleagues”.

Female footballers and camogie players are currently playing out the remainder of the 2023 season “in protest” as they try to highlight the need for an official charter that would set minimum requirements for things like expenses, playing

gear and medical treatment. Players have worn ‘equality’ t-shirts and carried out sit-down protests before matches in recent weeks.

The GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association are currently in the process of amalgamating under the guidance of the Steering Group for Integration, which is headed up by former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese. They say that negotiations must be completed before any charter is established, but players want action to be taken in time for the 2024 season.

In a statement released via the Gaelic Players Association, the male captains urged the GAA to expedite the process.

The statement reads: “To the leadership and management of the GAA. We, the 68 captains of the male senior inter-county teams, want to express our full support for our female colleagues and stand beside them #UnitedForEquality.

"As such, we are asking you to work with the Camogie Association, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the

Gaelic Players Association to discuss the steps necessary towards providing the minimum standards of welfare and care for female players for 2024.

"They cannot be expected to wait any longer. We do not accept that this is a matter solely for the two female governing bodies which is the response you have given to date.

“Among the GAA’s values is that of Community Identity. Community is at the heart of our Association. We know from our own communities that if our neighbour is struggling or requires help, the local GAA club steps forward to provide it.

“We know our female intercounty colleagues in the Gaelic games community are in need of support. They need help to provide basics such as medical support, nutritional support, access to facilities and financial support to offset travel expenses.

“Are you going to live that value of community, or will you allow this opportunity

for positive change to pass us by? In the GAA we know and love, there would only be one answer to that question.”

Former President of the GAA and former chairman of Kerry GAA Seán Kelly MEP has commended the male captains for showing solidarity with female players at this time.

Speaking ‘as Gaeilge’ to the 7 Lá show on TG4, Kelly said: “I saw what the captains have done. I praise them. It’s important that there is equality between women and men. The era of the women in the background and the men out front is over.”

OPINION

Kerry prove they are a different animal now

"There’s no one harder on Kerry than our own people."

As assertions go, it wasn't quite 'Páidí in South Africa', but Jack O’Connor’s postmatch comments regarding Kerry fans and their tendency to err on the side of criticism rang true.

Kerry had just demolished Tyrone in Croke Park. It was a commanding, double-scores win that underlined the reigning champions’ credentials as one of the frontrunners for the 2023 All-Ireland. What Jack was alluding to was that few had expected such a performance, particularly at home in The Kingdom. While most pundits tentatively backed Kerry to get the job done, many of the fans I spoke to last week were worried that last Saturday would be their last day out of the summer. The fact that it was Tyrone in the other corner did little to boost confidence levels. Memories of 2021 and that ambush in the rescheduled semi-final still haunted them.

There seems to be this perception in the rest of the country that Kerry fans always think their team is going to win, even when the odds are against them. I would actually say the converse is often true: a lot of Kerry fans think they’re going to lose, even when the odds are in their favour.

In the end, there was nothing to worry about. Kerry were brilliant and they dealt

with Tyrone with relative ease. We will get one more day in Dublin out of them; Derry await in the All-Ireland semi-final on Sunday week.

MEANING

Oftentimes a blowout win can be facile and a bit pointless but this one was loaded with meaning.

Firstly, and most obviously, beating Tyrone in Croke Park and settling the score from two years ago is a relief. For many of the players, that extra-time defeat will have been a career low. It can be parked now. They can beat Tyrone. Next question.

Kerry also proved that they have made significant improvements in key areas. In 2021, they turned the ball over 30 times. They lacked composure and patience and they ran straight into Tyrone’s trap time and time again. When they lost the ball, their defence was weak. They lacked intensity and cohesiveness, and the three goals they conceded probably cost them the All-Ireland.

On Saturday, they showed how far they have come. When faced with Tyrone’s packed defence, they were smart about it. They minded the ball, they bided their time, they avoided contact, and they punched holes when the time was right. They gave up 14 turnovers, 16 fewer than they did in 2021. Chalk and cheese.

Defensively, Kerry were a different animal completely compared to the last championship meeting between the two teams. These days Tyrone are arguably more dangerous in attack with the emergence of the excellent Canavan brothers but, as we saw throughout 2022, Jack O’Connor and his coaches seem to have cracked the defensive code. With everyone buying in to the team’s solid defensive structure, with Tadhg Morley providing the cover, and with the exceptional Jason Foley and Tom O’Sullivan nullifying Darren McCurry and Darragh Canavan, Kerry limited Tyrone to just six points in each half. Crucially, they conceded no goals. They hunted in packs, tracked runners, and generally displayed a level of aggression rarely seen in the years prior to O’Connor’s return. On more than one occasion, lads who are fairly relaxed and unassuming off the pitch – the likes of Gavin White, Diarmuid O’Connor and Tom O’Sullivan – fronted up to an opponent after a turnover or a Kerry score to let them know that this was Kerry’s day. Everything about the team’s demeanour pointed towards a ferocious collective desire to not be bullied in the manner that Tyrone have sometimes bullied Kerry in the past.

Diarmuid O’Connor’s performance is deserving of special praise. Kerry’s midfield

has come in for plenty of criticism this year (I have voiced concerns myself) but he arrived in a major way against Tyrone. The talk beforehand was that Kennedy and Kilpatrick would dominate but they were ones who were dominated. O’Connor, ably assisted by his Na Gaeil clubmate Jack Barry, was immense. It was the type of all-action, 70-minute display we knew he had in him.

It’s not realistic to expect a 10 out of 10 from him every time but if he can consistently give Kerry an 8 out of 10, it would be transformative for this team.

NOISE

The Tyrone victory should also kill off this spurious notion that Kerry are a oneman team. We have been told that the defending champions would be mediocre without David Clifford – “nothing”, even. Clifford was present the last day, and he thrilled the crowd with a sensational improvised pass that led to Seánie O’Shea’s goal, but by and large he was quiet. And that was okay. His teammates made plenty of noise in his stead.

Seánie O’Shea – another player who faced criticism earlier in the season –looks like a new man. He took his goal really well and he appeared to enjoy his day in Croker more than most. As I said in the build-up, Tyrone was a tough draw but it was an opportunity to prove a point. O’Shea and his teammates grabbed that opportunity with both hands.

The Ulster champions, Derry, are next up with a place in the All-Ireland final on the line. It won’t come easy but confidence should be high. Even the harshest of critics among us must be feeling good after beating Tyrone.

Ruthless Kingdom set the record straight

Adam Moynihan reports from Croke Park, Dublin

ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL Kerry 2-18 | Tyrone 0-12

Defending champions Kerry hammered bitter rivals Tyrone in Croke Park on Saturday last as second-half goals by Diarmuid O’Connor and Seánie O’Shea contributed to an emphatic 12-point win. Those strikes by the excellent O’Connor and O’Shea were important but the victory was built on the foundation of a clean sheet, with Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley imperious in defence.

Jack O’Connor’s men will now face Ulster opposition again in the semi-final. After seeing off Cork in their quarter-final tie, Derry have the potential to provide Kerry with their sternest test to date.

BUSINESS

Kerry meant business from the off against Tyrone and in the 14th minute, a mark by David Clifford, following an interception by Diarmuid O’Connor and an assist by Gavin White, opened up a three-point lead (0-4 to 0-1). Darren McCurry pulled one back from a free be-

fore Tom O’Sullivan sauntered forward and floated over an OOTB effort from just inside the 45.

Tyrone reacted well, however, and three straight points by Ruairí Canavan (two) and Darragh Canavan levelled the scores with 21 minutes played.

David Clifford wasn’t at his proficient best in terms of shooting but the Munster champions still finished the half in the ascendency as points by Paudie Clifford and the impressive O’Connor, as well as two David Clifford frees, saw them re-establish that three-point lead by half-time (0-9 to 0-6).

WINNING

The third quarter proved to be the winning and losing of the match. Kerry, playing into the Hill 16 end, flew out of the traps and racked up 1-5 without reply. The goal came in the 52nd minute via Man of the Match Diarmuid O’Connor, who gathered Tony Brosnan’s fisted pass and calmly stroked it home.

That made it an 11-point game and already you felt as though Tyrone had one eye on the road home.

The Red Hand county eventually got off the mark for the second half in the 54th minute – McCurry with another free –and substitute Cathal McShane made it 1-14 to 0-8. David Clifford (his only point from play) and Mattie Donnelly then exchanged scores, before Seánie O’Shea put the exclamation point on the end of Kerry’s performance with a 61st-minute goal.

The assist from Tony Brosnan and finish by O’Shea were nice but they weren’t quite as nice as the assist to the assist.

When Paudie Clifford fed his brother David with a pass down the line in front of the Hogan Stand, it appeared as though the younger sibling was in trouble. With the ball bouncing high, close to the sideline and with Tyrone defenders Pádraig Hampsey and Ronan McNamee closing in, the Footballer of the Year was in danger of getting smashed into Row F.

What happened next drew oohs and aahs from those in attendance. Clifford quickly tapped the ball down to his boot and volleyed a high, looping pass, out of reach of his opponents, all of 35 metres

down the pitch and into the waiting arms of the unmarked Brosnan. It was a spectacular piece of skill that will live long in the memory. Even when he’s not at his best, he still manages to exude greatness.

The final 15 minutes or so counted for little as Kerry maintained their 12-point advantage. They march on to the final four with another All-Ireland appearance firmly in their sights.

Excellent defensive

Former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on a pleasant outing to Croke Park

On Saturday last this Kerry team delivered what I hoped they would but was anything but sure they could.

Their form since winning Sam just a year ago was patchy and unconvincing. Hammering Louth gave hope, but Tyrone was the acid test. Thankfully they delivered.

Now we can look forward to a probable Kerry v Dublin final. Jack O’Connor will be dampening down the present elation. Kerry got the tougher semi-final: Derry are well ahead of Monaghan.

So, on the weekend of June 15/16, both Kerry senior football teams will be in action. The Kerry ladies’ win over Cavan last weekend guarantees them a home quarter-final against Meath, the current All-Ireland champions, in Tralee on the Saturday.

ON THE ROAD

Going to Croke Park is always special. Why you go there is obvious, but too often circumstances dictate the mode of transport. What with trains booked out so fast, and the uncertainty of extra carriages being provided by Irish Rail, and the ridiculous GAAGO saga, alternatives must be sought.

It deprives so many people who are in no position to travel to Dublin either for health, age or financial reasons. This compounds the frustration for so many Kerry supporters.

On this occasion the Road to Croker

literally became the Road to Croker. Diarmaid wheeled all four of us safely and smoothly to the Red Cow. Brendan, Malachy and Tom shortened the journey with opinions, yarns, craic, banter and great fun. The Luas into town heaved with so many Kerry fans. Quite rightly, traditionalist Tom proposed a dinner in the middle of the day. The 3.45pm throw-in gave ample time to stroll to Croker, and I enjoyed guiding my colleagues to the game, diverting quite often from the usual trek from town to Jones’ Rd. I didn’t lead them quite so far off the beaten track as happened on the way to the 2022 final, to the home of Kellie Harrington.

For very good reasons, Tom hadn’t been in Croke Park for quite some time, so on this occasion we headed for the Hogan and Tom was feted at premium level. Fair dues to this farmer of many hectares, who is also an agronomist and an environmentalist. He was like the curious children in The Village Schoolmaster

“who gazed and gazed and still the wonder grew how”.

The green sward of the pitch was heaven on earth for this man who helped the great Prunty create the new sand-based pitch in the Fitzgerald Stadium. His opinion on the Croke Park pitch: “very green and not a weed in sight, but little comfort for the poor bees”.

With the job done and the monkeys

all gone, Diarmaid pointed the Ford Mondeo southward. The game was parsed, deconstructed, re-constructed and each passenger gave his honest opinion. These are mine in summary.

I was reminded that in the past I expressed reservations about this Kerry team and doubted that it was capable of retaining the Sam Maguire. Although I expected Kerry would defeat Tyrone, I felt that everything would have to go right for Kerry. They won in 2022 because they had the best player in their ranks, played to a good defensive strategy and were lucky. The Seánie O’Shea miracle and all that.

My main concern was that Kerry would not assert themselves and impose their game on Tyrone. If Tyrone lured them into an ambush of physicality, with little regard for fair play, the real danger was that David Clifford would become so frustrated. He could be caught up in retaliation and would walk prematurely along with his older brother, Paudie. The Red Hand of Ulster would thrive. Now I revise my opinion, still with some reservations. This is a good Kerry team, not great, but a lucky one. Luck was on their side. Cork did them a favour. They had two weeks to prepare and as Dr Eamonn always maintained, rest is central to recovery from training and/or matches.

In the 19th minute, the person sitting be-

side me (a stranger, a native of Castleisland but out of the Kingdom for decades) asked me what I thought would happen. I had no hesitation in assuring him that barring some freak refereeing decisions, penalties given that should not be given or vice versa, Kerry were going to win. Tyrone played their usual swarming tactics and then released a runner through the central channel on a path for a goal. This Kerry defence was excellent. Tyrone got to within 40 metres of the Kerry goal at best, realistically outside the scoring area. The D was preserved. Ironically, former Tyrone player Paddy Tally provided the blueprint. He played a huge role in the strategy for last year’s All-Ireland final, but unfortunately Kerry did not adhere to that in the league. Tadhg Morley was brilliant for the first time in a year. He closed off the bearna baol.

Then Gavin White showed why he is an All-Star. Out with injury for most of the past year, he played his primary role of defence perfectly and really opened up the Tyrone defence with those searing runs. He broke the tackles and the scoring opportunities emerged. Midfield did very well, especially Diarmuid O’Connor (1-2). He had a good final last year but in my opinion has disappointed in his progress as a midfielder. A brilliant minor along with Clifford and O’Shea, with great strength, mobility and fielding abil-

effort wins the day

ity, he did not progress to senior level to the extent of his potential. He did so on Sunday last.

Another big plus was that on the day David Clifford was uncharacteristically off-target, scoring just five points (three of these were frees) but Kerry still prevailed. ‘No one-man band’ is Jack’s mantra. The others stood up and set Kerry on a well-deserved win.

Great to see Seánie O’Shea come back into form with a personal tally of 1-5, including 1-1 from play. Next up the siege of Derry re-incarnated, the home of Coulter and the Derry Girls.

RESERVATIONS

Well done to all concerned. Mind you, I do have some reservations, lest one think that the Kerry management should be deified. Shane Ryan is an AllStar keeper and thankfully his defence ensured on Saturday that Tyrone got no direct shot at him for a goal. Ryan did very well to reach for that high dangerous ball at the Davin End in the second half.

What I did not like was the number of times he was outfield, far from his prime area of functionality. Why? Just because some goalkeepers, particularly those from the north, love to stray far from goal does not make it a wise tactic. I prefer to see the number 1 only leaving the goal area to assist to his defenders within 35 metres max. There are another 14 players to take responsibility for outfield play.

On one occasion Shane was up to the Tyrone 45. Ill-advised and dangerous. On one occasion his pass to a colleague was very nearly intercepted. If it had been, the Paddy Cullen and Mikey Sheehy episode would have rebounded on Kerry.

Look at Cluxton. Judicious movement off his line to assist a defender, but never more than 30 metres from base camp. No wonder he is a winner over, and over, and over again.

Kerry did well at midfield with good assistance from 5 to 12, but despite his honest work rate, I don’t rate Jack Barry as highly as others do. That’s a personal evaluation, as are all opinions in this column.

Last Saturday was great, a brilliant display, but we are not there yet. The Kerry management did so well. However, I feel they took a huge gamble in not responding to the yellow cards. Barry was on a yellow and he wasn’t setting the place on fire. Why risk a second yellow and a sending off, with a readymade replacement in Barry Dan available. Even when the result was never in doubt, the

Dingle vet was left on the bench. Is he that low in the pecking order?

Early on Paudie Clifford was really up for this game and targeted. Inevitably and unfairly, he was issued with a yellow card. Still, the persecution continued. When the match result was secure he was still left on to be goaded into a second yellow.

More about the bid to retain Sam in the weekend after this one.

MNÁ CHIARRAÍ

Kerry LGFA are going great guns - apart from that late surge by Cork to draw level in Munster. They had plenty of stars in their most recent victory over Cavan (221 to 2-5), including local lady Kayleigh Cronin, the All-Star full back, and the lethal full forward line of Síofra O'Shea, Caoimhe Evans and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who scored 1-9 between them. Ciara Murphy scored their other goal. Cáit Lynch was also outstanding. Kerry will have a home venue versus Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final. Meath are under a new boss in Jenny Rispin and she will be hell bent on holding on to their All-Ireland title for the third year in a row.

GUILLOTINE SUNDAY

This Sunday is the final shoot out at the OK Corral, the last round in the County Football League. It is going to the wire for so many of the teams. A loss will mean relegation for some, maybe even a draw will mean the drop. Other clubs need a win/draw to stay up and the top team in each division will be crowned champions for 2023. No final, and that is what I have always advocated. A league of 11 games is a reward for consistency, just like the Premier League. Championship has a different focus. All games go ahead at 2pm on Sunday, so that no team is at an advantage or disadvantage knowing that the result of a game played earlier may well dictate how teams play. There are some great games in prospect and the key variable which may determine the match result depends on how strong a team clubs can muster. At this stage many college players in particular have gone to the USA for the summer, playing with US clubs and combining work to raise some badly needed cash.

Some clubs have temporarily lost several players; others are affected but not to the same extent. Lineouts from all the clubs will be very interesting. With Kerry still in the race for Sam, clubs with intercounty players will also be much weakened.

Twitter will be extremely busy between the hours of 1400 and 1530 on Sunday.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR MEN: Our County League Division 1 ambitions took a major hit in Dingle last Friday evening as we had no answer to the intensity of the relegation haunted hosts. The very minimum required now is a victory over Kerins O’Rahillys in the final round of the competition, with the Strand Road outfit themselves not sure of their own status and needing something from the game. But that will not be enough on its own as Dr Crokes will be assured of the title with just a point against Milltown/ Castlemaine in the Mid Kerry venue. At time of writing 2pm on Sunday, July 9th, is pencilled in for the trip to Tralee. Full time score in Dingle, Killarney Legion 0-8 Dingle 2-12. The Division 6 side faced local rivals Dr Crokes in Direen on Friday evening also but had little luck going down on a 0-12 to 0-7 scoreline. They have a free weekend coming.
