On the tenth anniversary of it’s publication I just finished re-reading Tuesdays with Morrie.

WHAT’S NEWS

For those who aren’t familiar, it’s the profound story of the last lessons between a grown man and his college professor as the latter nears the end of his battle with a terminal disease. Morrie shares his wisdom on love, family, work, commercialism and connecting with others as a reminder of the important things in life. As he says, “no one looks back on their life and wishes they spent more time at work.”

22 BABIES ON THE COAST

As Christmas draws closer and chunky toy catalogues invade your mail box, it’s easy to lose touch with these simple truths and find yourself caught up in the commercialism and preparation. After all, someone has to buy the presents, order the prawns and clean the house. Unfortunately, true priorities can often be pushed aside in the mayhem. No matter your religion, the end of the calendar year and the beginning of a new one is traditionally a time to reflect, learn and share. So, whether you are a ‘sea change’ family spending your first Christmas on the coast or a long time resident, the truth is, (and it’s worth remembering at Christmas), we are among the lucky. On the Sunshine Coast, we don’t wake up scared in the middle of the night by distant gunfire. We don’t worry about finding enough money for medication for our kids suffering from AIDS, and on average we earn more than 98% of the world’s population. Family, friends, food, shelter and love. That’s what happiness is made of. Kids on the Coast wishes you all a happy and safe Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in 2009! Sarah Pye, Editor

Cutting the cost of living In our last edition, Kids on the Coast posed the question: “With the increasing cost of living, what is your tip for staying within the family budget?” Thanks to all our readers who shared their secrets. Here are our favourite responses.

Suzanne suggests Grating block cheese rather than buying already grated varieties. She bakes cupcakes rather than buying them and she says it’s just as easy to go on free family outings to the beach, picnic spots, fishing or hiking as it is to go to spend money on paid activities.

Instead of getting takeaways, Bec lets her kids choose something off the school tuckshop menu and she prepares it at home. “On a Friday or Saturday night why not try chicken tender strips in a roll with sprouts and mayo or nachos served in silver heat containers?” she says, “but make sure you make the effort to serve it the same way tuckshop does.”

Christmas to light up the Gold Coast The Gold Coast will be lit up with the magic of Christmas as hundreds of residents, businesses and community groups set up festive light displays. A list of entrants and finalists in the Council’s Christmas lights competition will be available in the Gold Coast Bulletin and on www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, you can jump aboard a Council-run bus tour departing from the Gold Coast Arts Centre every night from December11-24 at 7pm. To book, phone Murray’s Coaches: 13 22 51 ($14 for adults, $9 for children).

NEW MUMS AND THE PELVIC FLOOR Research shows that over 90% of women with stress incontinence three months after giving birth will still have the problem five years later unless they strengthen their pelvic floor muscles. Thankfully, there’s now a new website which informs Australian women about the importance of pelvic floor exercises, their role in overcoming incontinence, and specific exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor. Physiotherapist Michelle Kenway says “The childbearing years are a time of tremendous change for the pelvic floor, owing largely to the effects of pregnancy and childbirth - effective pelvic floor muscle exercise is essential before, during and after pregnancy.” For more information, visit www.pelvicfloorexercise.com.au

SCHOOL BANS CONTACT SPORTS FOR KIDS Grade 7 students at Coombabah State School have been banned from playing touch football and soccer - as well as rougher full contact games such as rugby league, AFL and rugby union - until the end of the year. Students will still be allowed to play alternative games as long as they are not considered 'contact' sports. An Education Queensland spokesperson said the move was necessary to protect the safety and welfare of all students. "The school has been forced to restrict Year 7 students from taking part in contact sports following a number of recent incidents that have escalated into fights and physical aggression between students." Students have protested against the new rules, but Education Queensland said the ruling by the school had the full support of staff and the school P&C.

Parents want computer classes in primary schools Parents want computer studies to be a core subject in primary schools, according to a survey by the Australian Schools Directory. Only 49% of Year Six students achieved a proficient standard in computer literacy in the last national computer skills test in 2005. More than 83% of 600 parents surveyed said computer classes should be an essential subject in the upper primary years. Publisher of the online Australian Schools Directory, Christina Landis said computer classes, along with English, maths and science were rated by most parents as essential in the upper primary years, while many other subjects rated as less important.

BREAK FOR SINGLE PARENTS A single parent holiday group is organising a six night getaway in January at Paradise Resort Gold Coast, it is an escorted group holiday including a free daily kid’s club for children under 12 as well as $5 kid’s meals. The aim is to give single parents a great holiday and a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends, while enjoying activities such as swimming, snorkelling, water sports and tennis. To find out more, contact Fiona from BYO Kids on 1300 296 543.

GET READY FOR PREP: ORGANISE YOUR CHILD’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE Birth certificates are compulsory for all children enrolling in their first year of school, including Prep Year. To avoid any hassles, parents who already have a birth certificate for their child should ensure they know where it is. If you need to organise a birth certificate, now is the time to apply to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages to avoid the back-to-school rush. Proof of identification such as a current driver’s licence or passport is needed and the cost is $27.00. You can apply by mail (if you have a JP certify your identification documents) or in person at your local courthouse or Queensland Government office (see website for locations). For more information, call 1300 366 430 or visit www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm

BABY BUDDIES

Volunteers from a new "baby buddy" program at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) are cuddling some of Queensland's sickest kids to a brighter future. Premier Anna Bligh says international research shows that cuddling neo-natal babies can lessen the time they have to spend in hospital and can promote their growth. "While the volunteers will be overseen by medical staff, it will make the cuddling less labour intensive on hospital resources and will also give parents a well-earned break to attend to other commitments, including their other children,” she says. People wanting to volunteer at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital can phone 3636 7151.

Swapping the city for the surf

It all started with an Aussie-made television drama. Back in 1999 viewers around the country started tuning in to SeaChange and before long they were packing up their hectic city lives and heading for smaller coastal communities just like the main character in the show. Or maybe the show portrayed a trend that was already happening? Either way, driven by a desire to escape city living in favour of a perceived ‘better life’ on the coast a great many people have chosen to relocate from the cities to our beautiful beachside towns and suburbs in recent years. And who can blame them?

The shifting population to regional coastal Australia has created a boom in real estate and coastal tourism and made the sea change phenomenon the subject of serious academic study as well as the focus of a government task force. But behind the urban planning debates and university conferences there is another story; lots of wonderful families who are taking a long hard look at their lifestyles and choosing to change. I spoke to two of these families to find out why they came to the coast and how their lives have altered since making their sea change.

The Johns family – from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast Jennifer Johns, her husband Matthew and their two children Ethan (now age 8) and Chloe (now 6) were living in what Jennifer describes as an old two-bedroom boxy unit in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla. A Sydneysider all her life, Jennifer was surrounded by family and friends but she started to wonder if their family life could be improved. “Matthew had lived in Mount Isa in far north Queensland and he’d been on at me about the lifestyle. Then it got to the point when I wasn’t happy with the school the kids were at. Plus it just wasn’t very social in Sydney, everyone kept themselves to themselves and you had to make an appointment to see your friends. It felt like we were in our flat the whole time and the kids couldn’t really play outside because it wasn’t very safe with speeding cars,” she remembers. In the end, Jennifer decided she was sick of the life in Sydney and agreed that the family should make a change. Not to Mount Isa (which is rather a long way from the sea) but to somewhere near the coast in South East Queensland. “I didn’t want to live my life thinking we’d never even tried,” she says. The Johns family drove up the New South Wales Coast and on to Brisbane, but that just felt like Sydney, so they kept on going to the Sunshine Coast where Jennifer used to holiday as a kid. “We drove all around, and when we got to Buderim I said

to Matthew I feel at home here, and that was it. I had a real gut feeling that this was everything we’d been searching for – a safe environment for the kids and a social life for the whole family.” Jennifer, Matthew, Ethan and Chloe moved up to Buderim 12 months ago and the family found it met all their expectations and more. To start with they now live in a 3-bedroom 2-bathroom townhouse with ocean views whose upper floor alone is the size of their old Sydney unit. They also have a nice yard, and all for the same rent they were paying in Sydney. Being in a safe cul-de-sac gives the kids plenty of space for riding their bikes and playing with their friends and they have become more independent and happier as a result. “As soon as we arrived I felt people were absolutely different up here,”Jennifer says. “You somehow trust people immediately and the kids have flourished. I remember to start with I would stand out in the street and watch them play, then I moved back to the drive, and finally into the house where I can still keep an eye on them. I really had to learn to let the kids go, but Sydney is just not the place to do that,” she adds. “Here I have a great network of friends and a lot of them have moved away from family and friends as well. There are so many times when people have dropped in for coffee and end up staying three or four hours, and the other day Matthew and I had a party and we couldn’t believe how many friends we’d made,” Jennifer says. Things are great for the Johns family now, but the first few months were pretty tough going. “When we first moved up Matthew took long service leave from his job and took a temporary job in the mines. So he was away for three weeks out of four and that was difficult because the kids really missed him. He did it for the money so we could get a bit behind us,” Jennifer says.

Now Matthew is commuting back to Sydney to his former job as an avionics engineer for Qantas, and the final piece of the sea change puzzle will be him getting a permanent job near the coast, which the family hopes will happen very soon. “Even now it’s difficult for the kids when he goes away – that’s the one thing that’s hard because they just want Daddy home,” Jennifer says. Having lived four doors away from family in Sydney, the move was a wrench in other ways too, but the kids are getting used to it and finding that they want to spend more time with their friends. One year on, Jennifer is absolutely sure they made the right choice, but her friends from Sydney don’t always understand. “People come up to stay and they look at our lives here and ask if we’re really happy,” she says, “But I think they’re the ones who are missing out because their kids are all stuck doing indoor things and I’d prefer mine to be out playing. The other day we hired a boat for the day and went on the Maroochy River, and Matthew and I took two weeks together while the kids were at school and we went to Mooloolaba Beach every day – it was just perfect.”

The Perkin family – from Melbourne to the Gold Coast Jo and Troy Perkin were well and truly part of the rat-race in Melbourne when their first child Abbey (now age 5) was born. They were both working very long hours in demanding jobs with a long commute every day. Within a year of the birth Jo had returned to her corporate communications job, albeit part-time, and the merry-goround got faster and faster. “I used to say it’s like running a marathon. The alarm went off at 5.30am every day and I got home around 7pm, then at the end of the evening I’d collapse into bed and get ready to do it all again the next day,” she says. Although she was only supposed to be working for three days a week, like many other part-time mums working for big companies Jo found the hours stretched to

an extra day. “There are not many corporate companies that cater well for part-time working mums. And it’s a bit mad, but you’re quite keen to prove that you’re still the same and able to do what you did before the baby.” Meanwhile Troy was working long hours as a carpenter and builder, a job that involved a fair amount of travel and responsibility. Despite the family’s hectic routines they felt lucky that Troy got home at 4.30pm most days and was able to take care of the evening routine, and Abbey was looked after by family members while Jo and Troy were at work. The family had a nice house too, in a leafy Melbourne suburb near the Yarra, and a happy and active social life. All in all, despite the fast pace of life, the Perkin family was pretty content. It was into this picture of modern family life that Jo’s mum and dad landed when they came down from Queensland for one of their regular visits. “My parents had been doing management rights (running holiday resorts) in Queensland for about seven years and they were spending some time with us in Melbourne,” Jo remembers. “One day they got a call from someone and a partnership deal came up. Mum and Dad said sort of jokingly to Troy ‘I don’t suppose you guys would consider it?’ – I think they were expecting him to say no, that we were fully entrenched in our city life,” Jo says. Instead, Troy was silent for a moment, and looked across at Jo. The couple talked about the idea, and in that moment their lives changed. Within a few months Jo, Troy and Abbey had left Melbourne and moved up to live and work at Aruba Surf Resort at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. “The lifestyle was the major factor in our decision to do it,” Jo says. “With a little one, and another one hoped for in the future (son Ollie came along later and is now 16 months old) we really wanted to work out how we could have a life.” The move has made quite a difference to their quality of life. “Our travel time has completely disappeared. Troy and I used to drive for three and a half hours every day between us, so that is a huge saving,” Jo says. “Having said that management rights is a full-time job and it is certainly busy, but it is a step back from the frantic

www.kidsonthecoast.com.au

mentality of the city. Aruba Surf is a relaxed place to work because you’re working with holidaymakers and it has a holiday feel about it. It’s busy but far less taxing than our old jobs and we’ve been able to be handson parents together and enjoy a lot of things the coast has to offer in between running the business.” The family enjoys going for a walk on the beach every morning and they all love the ocean. “Troy and I both love the beach but we couldn’t live by the open ocean in Melbourne because it was too far away from the city. For me it’s a real bonus to live by the sea and Troy goes sea-kayaking and Abbey has joined up to the local surf club and she’s going to be a little nipper,” Jo says. It took Jo and Troy about a year to fully adjust to their new way of life. “The first six months were pretty testing in some ways. It was a very big change and we both had to adjust to letting go of a big job with a fair amount of responsibility. It was also tumultuous learning to work together and I guess it took about six months to settle into our roles,” Jo says. And although they are completely happy with the choice they made and how it has worked out for their young family, they don’t necessarily think the Gold Coast will be their final destination – more like a very long stop on the journey. “I have learnt that you can pack up and change your life and try something different,” said Jo, “but you don’t have to lock yourself into the next plan for life. If and when we move on from here - and I think it’s when not if - we’ll view that as another sea change. It’s a great feeling to think that if you want to make a change it’s within your power to do that and you can Have your say really have a positive effect on the whole family. Comment on this article at That’s what we’ve found quite empowering and www.kidsonthecoast.com.au enjoyable – that realisation.”

THE ‘P’ Files

Ode to

elders by Sarah Pye

Senior citizens have a lot to give Whether they were tyrannical believers in the ‘seen and not heard’ philosophy, a source of warm hugs, or a sense of security while your frantic parents rushed around making ends meet, chances are if you think back to your childhood, your grandparents, (or other seniors), played a role in shaping your personality. Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin says grandparents “are unsung heroes in the community”. ”Spending time with their grandchildren, reading to them, cooking together, taking them shopping are the simple, everyday interactions grandparents undertake that can make such a difference to children growing up,” she says.

So what happens in transient populations like the Gold Coast? We are all too aware of the pressure put on parents living away from their family support network, but what about the children? Whether they stop for a passing conversation, or are an integral part, senior citizens influence our children’s lives. Yet divorce or relocation means many kids live without elderly role models. Are modern-day children disadvantaged if they don’t have a connection with the older generation? Like many Gold Coast kids, my family moved away from grandparents while I was young and the influence of seniors often came from members of the community. There was Mr Bradshaw across the road, on whose ladder I climbed to peer over the edge of a nest at fledgling sparrows and Miss Day, an 80 year old spinster who had lived in the same house from the day of her birth. Imagine my delight listening to tales of the morning, at the age of six, when Miss Day saw Queen Victoria and was disappointed the monarch wasn’t wearing a crown… Or how I treasured the ancient clay marbles Mr Bradshaw lovingly pushed into my waiting hand. The Gold Coast has a higher average age population with a mean of 41 years compared to 34 years nationwide. So any lack of connection is certainly not due to lack of opportunity. Often dismissed and undervalued, the seniors of our community have a wealth of life experience and wisdom which so often goes untapped. Mum, Melanie Sonter has vivid memories of tea parties with her own ‘Nan’ and she wanted her girls to spend one-on-one time with “someone who could teach them things like baking, knitting and gardening”. When they were out, she often found older people doting on her children and she wondered if seniors too missed interaction with youth. Melanie decided to do something about it and in 2007 she started a program called Adopt-a-Granny. “It was about introducing families with young ones in need of a grandparent, with seniors who miss their own grandchildren or didn’t have any,” she explains. “We would meet fortnightly at various parks…if you clicked with somebody you could exchange phone numbers and go from there.”

Unsung heroes This comprehensive guide contains an abundance of practical ideas, such as how to baby-proof your home, how to stay in touch and how you can best support your adult children in their transition to parenthood. Informative and fun, this book is an indispensable tool for anyone entering this challenging and rewarding life stage. Although the program was actively advertised and Melanie found it was enthusiastically received by parents, their interest far outweighed the number of ‘would-be’ grandparents. After five months of meetings, things fizzled and the opportunity was gone. “If there was interest I would be more than happy to restart the program,” Melanie says wistfully, “Personally, I still have two young ones in need of a grandparent figure and I would jump at the chance of giving it another go.” Prime Trust’s Queensland sales manager Chip McKibben also saw the need for inter-generational connection. He remembers fondly those elders who influenced his own youth and felt his two boys, Finn (5) and Jack (31/2) would benefit from the same. Prime Trust runs Hibiscus Retirement Resorts nationwide. This put Chip in the unique position to be able to make a difference. Together with the director of the C&K Marianna Van Der Zypp, Chip designed a program where seniors from the retirement villages would visit the kindergarten once a week for an hour long ‘play date’. Coined the Building Bridges program, it sees two or three residents at a time telling stories, playing games and teaching long forgotten crafts. It has been so successful Chip has been asked to replicate it in other senior resorts throughout Qld.

commented on every step of building an adequate wagon,” he chuckles. Santa Keith, a.k.a. Keith Lanham has been building wooden toys since he was not much older than the children at the C&K.

One willing participant, Shirley Hares’ grandchildren are long grown up and she felt a void needed filling.

“When I was seven, my dad told me to break up packing crates to throw away and I refused,” he remembers, ”instead I used the wood to make toys.”

“There was a note in the village saying they wanted seniors to read to the children on a roster,” she says, “My friend Betty and I responded and we were sitting with the kids within a couple of days.”

So began a love which has spanned more than half a century.

“It is just a magic feeling… you have given something to these kids because some of them don’t see their grandparents very much. “I’d love to pick up one of those French knitting sets and show them how to use them,” she says, “It was something we took for granted and got so much pleasure from.” Director of the C&K Marianna Van Der Zypp says the benefits of the program are threefold. “Its great for children who don’t have contact with their grandparents, the interaction and skill sharing is beneficial, and the seniors feel valued because they are contributing to society,” she says. Marianna explains the Building Bridges program is self selective, which means the kids choose to be involved if and when they want to. The events have been enthusiastically met by both age groups and youngsters have heard stories, learned how to tap dance and even learned about making wooden toys. Chip’s son Finn has been excited by the events. “He came home after meeting with ‘Santa Keith’ who looks like Santa Claus, and

Keith now runs a woodworking group at Hibiscus Resort Chancellor Park and when he’s not talking to kids, his focus, just like Santa’s, is making sure he has enough toys ready for Christmas. Last year he made about 520, all of which were distributed to less fortunate kids via the Kmart Wishing Tree. Turning 20 years old this year, the Wishing Tree has distributed more than 3.75 million gifts since its inception. Also like Santa, Keith doesn’t do it alone. He has a team of elves at the retirement village and also runs classes at the Maroochydore Youth Justice Centre once a week. There, young people committed to community service learn how to make toys like wheel barrows, blocks and blackboards and help paint them. “Normally these kids would be mowing lawns or picking up rubbish,” he says, “This way they are learning something that might spark their interest for the future and take them into an apprenticeship.” Grandparents or not, senior citizens are an integral part of society. Yes, it’s hard if your children live away from their nana and pop, but there are plenty of other elders willing to fill the void. Next time you pass your elderly neighbour why not flash them a smile of thanks? They may be old, white haired and even perhaps technically Have your say illiterate, but within each senior is a lifetime of Comment on this article at learning and experience and many are itching www.kidsonthecoast.com.au to give back to the next generation.

One child drowns every week in Australia Swimming pools provide endless fun but they also raise serious safety issues and obligations when children are around. Fenced pools can make parents feel falsely secure about their children’s safety and sadly, drowning still occurs when a pool fence is in place. It often takes less time than it takes to answer the phone. “Little did we know our son had got into our pool while we were preparing to go out,” said mum Katie, who found her son Jacob in their backyard pool. “After a night in hospital, he made a full recovery. We were so lucky to find him when we did.” A gate may not close properly, a chair enables them to reach the gate bolt, or the kids just simply see the pool fence as a challenging object to climb. A recent survey indicated by the age of four, 62% of children could climb a 1.2 metre fence in around 12 seconds!

The Aqua-Guard Pool Safety Net fits snugly over the pool as a barrier between children and the water. Made from heavy duty polyethylene, the net can easily hold an adult’s weight and children cannot get under, over or through the net. “We are now at peace knowing our Aqua-Guard Pool Safety Net is in our pool,” Katie said. “We wish we had done it sooner.” Over 350,000 parents, schools, communities and safety experts worldwide rely on a Pool Safety Net because they are one of the most secure, proven safety systems available today. No child has ever drowned in a pool protected by a correctly installed Aqua-Guard safety net. Be part of Aqua-Guard Pool Safety Net’s 100% safety record. Phone 07 5631 4756 now, or visit www.aqua-guard.com.au. Rest assured with 24-hour-a-day, yearround pool protection.

education

by Jennifer Cochrane

Parents in the Helping the teacher helps your child Researchers, teachers and families agree that when parents get into the classroom their children get more out of school. Parent participation shows children that education is important; it sets up good communication links between parents and teachers and builds realistic parental expectations. Education Psychologist Tricia Chandra says when parents are involved in their child’s school life the child actually does better academically. “There is a clear link between parents showing they believe school is important and the child believing it is important,” she says. There are specific advantages to parents helping in the classroom. “In the classroom, parents can quickly come to know where their child is academically. They can build an understanding of the curriculum and the educational experiences it presents,” Tricia says.

KiDs on tHe CoAst – DECEMBER 2008 / JANUARY 2009

“When you see first hand what happens in the classroom you can have realistic expectations not only of your child’s learning, but importantly, of teachers and the environment in which they work. “In the younger classes an extra pair of hands makes impossible things possible,” Tricia says. “Helping hands allow the teacher to enrich the children’s learning through small group work or creative activity. Parent help is especially important during excursions,” she adds. Time in the classroom builds relationships and communication between parents and teachers. Communicating your child’s needs through clear communication and respect is much more effective than loudly complaining on rare occasions.

www.kidsonthecoast.com.au

Being in a busy classroom allows parents an insight into the challenges and strengths of their own child, and that of every other child in the class. Children’s right to privacy is paramount and parents helping in this way need to adhere to rules of confidentiality and conduct. In some schools, a training program is run for parent volunteers. Tricia says an understanding of the wider school environment and culture has big advantages too. “Older students will use ignorance to manipulate their parents. ‘You don’t know Mum, everybody has tuckshop on Wednesday, so I need to have it too!’ or ‘Mum, there is no homework this week so I can go out to the shops this afternoon.’ If parents know lots of students don’t get tuckshop, or that there is always homework they can more easily deal with this kind of manipulation,” she says. Parenting today can be isolating. Social networking at school allows parents to compare notes and get support from each other. Some schools have parent representatives in each class who arrange social gatherings outside of school hours for working parents to facilitate sharing valuable information. Being involved at school does not necessarily mean you have to be there for hours on end. There are lots of ways to let your child know that you are interested in their school, like taking some books from the library to cover at home, helping at the fete, or attending a parent meeting. “Read newsletters and mark events on your calendar so that your child has money for pizza day, and does not show up in her uniform on a free dress day. It is too big a job for kids to know everything. It is the parent’s job to organise and help children fit in until about year four, and possibly longer for boys. Having everything organised means less anxiety and therefore a clearer brain for better learning,” Tricia says. Even with all these benefits it seems only about 2% of parents actually help at school. Trish encourages parents to ask what they can do to help. “If your child’s teacher can’t find an opportunity for you then you can still reap the benefits of participation by helping the teacher in the next classroom,” she says.

It is important, though, to make a regular commitment. Teachers depend on parent help to achieve their outcomes and so you have to be there when you say you will be. A school day runs like clockwork and using parent help takes time and planning. “Don’t turn up unannounced with two hours to spare and ask ‘how can I help?’” Tricia says. It’s not all smooth sailing. Tricia says comparing a child’s learning with others can create anxiety in parents and children. “Each child develops at their own pace and some children plateau for a while before surging ahead. Children pick up pressure from parents and this can stunt their normal development,” Tricia says. For clingy children, a parent in the classroom can be unsettling. The child may play up while you are there and take a long time to settle once you leave. Tricia suggests helping in another classroom if this is the case. Parents may be tempted to speed up progress at home and teach the next step if they have seen class work in action. But, your child can miss out on a vital step in the learning process and become confused. “Children gain confidence through attempting tasks themselves. If parents hover over assignment work, or indeed do the work themselves, children can worry about not meeting a standard and become afraid of thinking for themselves,” Tricia says. Educators are working hard to involve families in schools. Teachers build a child’s learning on their existing knowledge and experience. With some insight of what is happening in a child’s life, teachers can make this learning more real and relevant for children so good communication between home and school is essential to good teaching.

The Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) and NEiTA (National Excellence in Teaching Awards) recently released a guide for parents to help them support teachers’ who educate their children. Parent-Teacher Partnerships: Teachers reveal six rules for parents to help their children get the most out of school provides valuable insights for parents into how they can contribute more effectively to their children’s education. The guide reveals that most of all, teachers want parents to work in partnership with them. ASG’s Managing Director, Terry O’Connell says when asked to describe the parentteacher partnership, three words that teachers used most were: essential, vital, and critical. All parents, and especially time-poor ones, will be relieved that teachers believe when it comes to helping children learn, parents don’t need to be an “Einstein” nor do they need to put hours aside coming to terms with maths and science homework. Rather, it can be as simple as taking an interest – reading, listening, getting involved. Even sending an email or making a quick phone call, or five minutes spent at drop-off or pickup can make all the difference. “Many elements combine to enable children to gain a quality education that provides them with a platform for their futures lives, not the least of which is the opportunity to experience their schooling with the full support of their teachers and parents,” says Terry O’Connell. “Teachers are at the heart of their students, schools and communities and they are central in ensuring that young people achieve their potential. It is crucial work that deserves recognition at the very highest level. If we as a nation are truly serious about education as an issue, we must continue to recognise and help elevate the status of teachers,” he says.

Visit www.neita.com.au for the new guide Parent-Teacher Partnerships: Teachers reveal six rules for parents to help their children get the most out of school. Visit www.parentassist.com.au for information and upcoming seminars by Education Psychologist Tricia Chandra.

to help your children get the most from school Rule 1: Prepare your child for school “If schools keep performing parental roles, they absolve parents of these responsibilities.”

Rule 2: Share the responsibility for your child’s education “Show children, in their individual lives, that education is valued and important.”

Rule 3: Partner with your child’s teacher “…the children who do best at school are the ones who have parents (at home) and teachers (at school) working closest together.”

Rule 4: Participate in your child’s school “Acknowledgement of each parent’s participation – no matter how great or small – is paramount.”

Rule 5: Communication goes two ways Teachers agree that parent-teacher interviews are the best means of communication, they should happen more often and parents should be able to take special leave to attend them.

Rule 6: Support your child’s teacher and school Even if you’re not in total agreement with the school’s policies, respect them. ”As a teacher, it is very difficult to reason with a student who says, ‘My Mum says I don’t have to do that.’” Source: Parent-Teacher Partnerships: Teachers reveal six rules for parents to help their children get the most out of school

Depression in Children Childhood is usually associated with happiness and trouble-free fun, but everyone knows children can also have sad and miserable times in their lives such as family losses, personal disappointments and life difficulties. Until recently, we have tended to assume all children can bounce back emotionally from events such as these. However, persistent and unremitting sadness and hopelessness in children should ring alarm bells in parents, siblings and carers. Some studies have found: • Four in every 100 preschoolers (4%) have some symptoms of depression • 10 in 100 (10%) of children between the ages of 6 and 12 have persistent feelings of sadness which can last weeks or months • Two in 100 (2%) children become seriously depressed • Five in 100 (5%) of young people over 12 years suffer a major depressive illness that lasts for weeks or months Before puberty rates of depression are equal in girls and boys, but after puberty more girls than boys experience depression. What to look for Symptoms of depression in children can include: • Prolonged sad mood lasting weeks or months • Loss of interest in normal activities such as playing and games • Sudden outbursts of anger, aggression and/or crying • Excessive fear or anxiety

www.kidsonthecoast.com.au

• • • • • • • •

Feeling hopeless or worthless Poor concentration Changes in appetite; weight gain/loss Constant physical complaints with no apparent cause Withdrawal from family and friends Tiredness, lack of energy, trouble sleeping or too much sleep Marked drop in school performance Self harm or thoughts of suicide

Causes of depression in children: Depression in children is often related to family losses, health problems, life adversities such as: • Ongoing conflict in the family or between parents • Family breakup • Death of close people or animals • Major life changes (moving house or school) • Serious or chronic health problems • Abuse or bullying • Some medications What to do: These adverse life events may combine with a genetic vulnerability in children who have a family history of mental illness to result in a depressive illness. Treatment of depression is essential, as childhood and adolescence are vital times for personality development and social development. Concerned parents should consult their local doctor who will consider whether referral to a child psychologist or counsellor is adequate to address the problem, or whether other action is needed. Children with suspected severe depression should be referred immediately to the local Child/Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) or a private child psychiatrist. In some cases, antidepressant medications may be necessary, and children on antidepressants should be managed by a team of professionals including the local GP, psychiatrists and other allied mental health professionals. unscrambling

the challenge of buying gifts Newborn to six months Avoid the ‘lucky dip’ with this handy guide for uncles, aunts, grandparents, friends and first-time parents. Do you remember fuelling your imagination with Lego blocks, or creating imaginary roads around the living room with Matchbox Cars? Little ones today have the same need to build it, make it move and wheel it, as you did as a child. By playing with everyday objects and toys, they learn all about cause and effect, shapes and colours and the way things behave. A child’s first three years impact on brain development and the milestones often come fast a furious. It’s surprising how quickly we forget. “Oh, he doesn’t like those anymore” can be a little deflating on Christmas morning when you learn blocks have been pushed aside for books, or dolls have been replaced by board games. With a little reminder, you can approach the family Christmas with confidence.

- stare at it, press it, listen to it A newborn’s eyesight is pretty fuzzy, but even from a few days old he or she loves plenty to look at, sounds to hear, and textures to explore. Babies aren’t too fussy about the sound either – even the lawnmower can get them excited! At six weeks old they love high contrast images and bright colours, and at just a few months old they’ll be reaching out to grab lightweight items like rattles and nearby fingers. Hand-held toys and sensory toys that make a noise when pressed are a great place to start. Babies love soft music, so a wind chime, musical mobile or music boxes are items they’ll enjoy well beyond newborn days and from this early age they love their own reflection, so items with non-glass mirrors are a great hit. Babies remind you the joy isn’t from the getting, it’s from the giving. They are just as likely to grab hold of your car keys and play with them, as play with the carefully selected toy you have chosen!

One to two years - move it, wheel it, sort it, copy it

Six months to one year - exploring texture, taste, sights and sounds As babies start to sit up, crawl and stand, they are keen to find anything that was previously out of reach. Tots will focus on objects or toys on the other side of the room, and perhaps crawl to them and pick them up.

Kid’s first steps and first words will certainly provide plenty of video and photo opportunities and, to help with their sense of balance, a pull-along-toy is a centuries old favourite. It’s challenging for them to walk and look around at the same time. They’ve probably practiced drums with wooden spoons and saucepans, so you could inspire them with toy guitars and keyboards. One hint: an easy-to-see volume switch makes these toys popular with mum and dad too! Toddlers learn by copying and ‘helping’ is a favourite game. Toy tools make it easy to join in, so if you’re a keen gardener, they will love wheeling a little barrow or shovelling garden beds.

Push toys give new walking skills a work-out and will be given a thrashing for months! It’s a wonderful time to introduce board books because they are easy to handle and (relatively) indestructible. Water play is also a hit so jugs, buckets, and bath toys go down well. Why don’t square pegs go into round holes? A shape sorter is also a good challenge at this age.

Single relatives are known for noisy gifts that drive parents crazy! My single sister learned her lesson when, while babysitting, she was subjected to the very-slowlyflattening-battery version of Old MacDonald’s, over and over again. This was enough to cause a major review of her gift selection. Ride on toys which are stable and simple will improve co-ordination too. Sixteenmonth-old Hannah’s “favourite toy, apart from the kitchen utensils, is her pushalong-with-her-feet car” says mum Lisa. Her other favourite was home made playdough, until it kept disappearing. It seems the family pooch had a favourite too!

Most tots, they love picking up, throwing and rolling balls, especially if you are involved too.

In fact, if it has wheels, it’s a hit.

BABIES ON

the coast

Welcome to the section for all things baby and maternity related!

Two to three - strategy and imagination By now, tot’s imaginations and creativity are running wild, just like their energy. Mum of three, Kelly says her crew were entertained for hours in a cubby house made from a cardboard box once the new fridge was installed. “The box gradually grew windows, doors, and a mailbox,” she says. In the same creative way, an outdoor/indoor fort, tepee or tent can provide hours of fun. Two to three-year-olds love to run, jump and balance, so balls continue to be a favourite whether it’s kicking a goal, tee-ing off with mini-golf, or throwing a ball into a hoop. Two-and-a-half year old Rex’s dad says it’s a good idea to have plenty of balls for the games because sharing is often a challenge at this age. “He just likes whatever his sister’s got!” Jigsaw puzzles with thick, easy to move blocks of wood are concentration testers and, like books, are great for time out from energetic games. ‘Let’s pretend’ dress-ups hold attention at this age and will be part of their life for many years to come. Dress up box items can include anything from old handbags to child-size

minime

outfits. A home-made or store bought dress-up box provides a thoughtful and long lasting solution to clutter. The ‘if it has wheels, it’s mine’ principal still applies at this age too! They’ll still love well-balanced wheeled toys like tricycles and wagons, but they might not be up to pedals yet. My three-year-old, for instance, is fixated with her scooter. Because of its original size, Lego used to be kept away from tots, but now there’s a whole array of large size bricks, some about eight times the size of traditional bricks, suitable from six month olds. Now you can introduce them to the magic of building blocks anytime, and Lego has expanded to 75 different vibrant colours. Children always return to the toys which hold meaning and the more time you play with your kids the better the outcome. So, this Christmas throw off your shoes, roll up your sleeves and get down on their level. Kids want your time… so ignite your imagination and show them how it’s done. You never know, it might bring some childhood memories back for you too!

“Toy play is fundamental for children in establishing their identity and learning new skills and emotions, but safety is paramount,” says Playgroup CEO, Mark Brooke. • Stick to the recommended age • Stay with larger sizes – for under three’s toy parts should be bigger than a film canister because of choking risks • Toys which are well made won’t just last longer; they’ll stay together so dangerous buttons, eyes and other small parts won’t come off. • Avoid anything with cords longer than 30cm • Look out for toxic paints and plastics

Financial freedom is on its way EXPERT financial planners Wealthfarm are teaching thousands of people how to become wealthy without changing their spending habits through a series of New Year Wealth Creation Seminars. “According to last year’s Australian Bureau of Statistics census study, 74 per cent of Australians aged over 65 are living on incomes of less then $20,748,” said Mr Sinclair. “Thanks to the trend towards longer retirement, financial independence now requires a lot of money. Planning for retirement needs to be a major priority. “What holds people back from creating wealth is that they are too busy, have little or no money or the attitude that there’s still lots of time. Time is running out. Make 2009 the year that you take the step forward to financial freedom.” Mr Sinclair said that in the past the priorities have been to pay off our debts, saved money in the bank and invested in property, but he asks has this worked. “Eight out of 10 people reply on the aged pension which will not sustain a comfortable retirement. We are retiring earlier and living longer which means we must plan early to maximise our quality of lifestyle at an older age,” said Mr Sinclair. “The best thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise. Our priority is to educate you how easy it can be to create long term wealth.

If this is your objective please visit one of our free seminars and become educated. Education is the key.” Now one of the largest firms in Australia, Wealthfarm have a range of clients across all age brackets and financial situations, and has recently achieved certification under the internationally-recognised best practice standard for financial planning businesses, FP9000. This certification provides assurance that Wealthfarm have quality business practices, systems and processes in place to support their clients. To take the first steps to financial freedom please attend a free New Year’s Wealth Creation Seminar at Wealthfarm’s Gold Coast on Wednesday 3rd and 17th December; Wednesday 7th, 14th, and 28th January; and 4th February 2009 from 6pm to 8:30pm. the soy

healthy or hazardous?

by special guest contributor Cyndi O’Meara, author of Changing Habits, Changing Lives

In this day and age it’s easy to become a vegetarian; people are more knowledgeable and the soy industry has created numerous products to enable vegetarians to obtain their daily protein. From the humble soy bean we have soy flour, tempeh, tofu, soy milk, soy sauce, miso, soy cheese, soy burgers, soy mayonnaise, and even soy ice-cream. Now at first this seems like a good thing, but for the last five years there has been a ground swell of negative publicity on soy and a proliferation of research and new discoveries, so it is worth looking at.

“We face the risk of mega dosing on soy.”

I must express here that it seems soy, like many other foods I talk about, has become a victim of when science and technology tries to “improve the food” to get the most out of it financially. While I believe soy inherently is a good food when cooked correctly and eaten in moderation, (of course I’m not talking about soy that has been genetically modified), it is what we have done to the humble soy bean that has created the problems we are now seeing.

Soy was traditionally used in Asian countries, but never in generous amounts. It was often used by the less affluent in times of scarcity and then only eaten after a painstaking process (lengthy fermentation) to destroy the toxins. Asians consume soy products in the form of tofu, miso, tempeh, fermented soybeans, boiled soybeans and soy milk (a very woody bland tasting product, not the sweetened, flavoured and chemicalised concoction sold in western grocery stores). The estimated amount of soy protein consumed from these sources is about 7g per day. Asians generally only use small portions of soy to complement their meal around 4% of their total food consumption. It should also be noted that soy is not the main source of dietary protein for Asians. On the other hand, many vegetarians in western society think nothing of consuming 220 grams of tofu and a couple of glasses of soy milk per day, two or three times a week, well in excess of what Asians typically consume. Soy, which was once a minor crop, was not termed a food but rather an industrial product. It has now become a major food crop, and the last 20 years has seen the proliferation of soy products and by-products that dominate the market. A whopping 60%-80% of foods on grocery shelves now contain soy in the guise of soy flour,

textured vegetable protein, partially hydrogenated soy bean oil, soy protein isolate and vegetable oil. Check the labels. Cake mixes, chips, crackers, cookies, margarine, infant formulas, meat substitutes and bread all contain soy in some form. Unbeknown to most of us soy now plays a major role in our diet.

My chief concern is that mostly we are not choosing to eat this amount of soy, it is being imposed upon us, and we face the risk of mega dosing on soy, once again overdosing on a food that is possibly causing more food sensitivities and health problems — the same scenario we have already seen with wheat and dairy. This is not about scare mongering but rather making you aware that this food, which was not in our diet 20 years ago, is now there in increasing amounts. With this knowledge it is possible to make educated choices about the food you consume. Not only is soy in our diet in greater amounts, there are certain dark sides to the soy bean that need to be addressed. Soy contains potent enzyme inhibitors that block the action of trypsin and other protein digesting enzymes. They can produce serious gastric distress with reduced protein digestion causing chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake. Soy beans also contain haemagglutinin, a clot promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together. Together, trypsin and haemagglutinin cause growth retardation. Soy beans are also high in phytic acid, present in the bran or hulls of all grains. Phytic acid can block the uptake of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and especially zinc. The phytates in soy beans are highly resistant to normal phytate-reducing techniques such as long, slow cooking. Zinc malabsorption is a major concern as this is needed for brain and nerve function.

ONLY

natural Parts of the soy bean which are of particular concern are the endocrine-disrupting isoflavones, also known collectively as zeno or phytooestrogens. In 1991 a team of Japanese scientists found that two tablespoons of soy per day for one month resulted in a significant increase in thyroid stimulating hormone. Goitre and hypothyroidism appeared in some of the subjects and many complained of constipation, fatigue and lethargy. Some studies have gone as far as saying that soy may increase the chances of oestrogen-dependent breast cancer. You have to wonder here what these zeno-oestrogens are doing to our children and our men. The most serious problem with soy may be its use in infant formulas. “The amount of zeno-oestrogens that are in a day’s worth of soy infant formula equals the amount of oestrogen in 5 birth control pills”, says Dr Mary G Enig, president of the Maryland Nutritionists Association. She and other nutrition experts believe that

infant exposure to high amounts of zeno-oestrogens is associated with early puberty in girls and delayed and/or damaged physical maturation in boys. While soy producers try to get rid of the anti-nutrients, in the process they destroy many of the nutrients. Miso, tofu, tempeh and other fermented soy products are by far the superior soy foods. For me the most frightening of soy products is Soy Protein Isolate. This is something you cannot make in your own kitchen. It is made in an industrial factory using alkaline and acid washes, with very high temperatures, high pressure and spray drying for the final product. Nitrites, which are potent carcinogens, are formed during the spray drying, and another toxin is formed during the alkaline processing. Numerous artificial flavourings, particularly MSG, are added to soy protein isolate and TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) products to mask their natural taste. In some studies, the consumption of soy protein isolate increased requirements for vitamins E, D, K and B12 and created deficiencies in calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, copper, iron and zinc. Soy Protein Isolate is the key ingredient in many baby formulas and protein powders and soy foods that imitate meat and dairy products. Please check your products carefully if you want to avoid this insidious ingredient. We naively believe that the foods on our shelves are safe but they may only be “edible”. I strongly urge anyone drinking soy milk, or eating soy products - that means just about everybody who buys food in a supermarket - to find out what they can about soy and its byproducts. I believe that while a small amount of soy occasionally can be good for our health, we need to be very aware of how much we are eating, especially in light of emerging data. Do some research, and find out as much as you can about the products you buy so you can make informed choices about what you eat.

Make the most of precious moments Who could forget that photo of Demi Moore and her gorgeously blooming belly on the cover of Vanity Fair? Now many more mums-to-be are keen to have those luscious pregnancy curves captured on camera before they’re gone. “Pregnancy and birth should be the proudest times in a woman’s life, and a time to celebrate and remember,” says Kathy Ashford, a creative photographer who’s team specialises in pregnancy and newborn photography. Kathy, herself a mother of four, says she truly understands the emotions that go with becoming a Mum. “And that time goes so quickly,” she adds. Whether you’re pregnant or bringing in your newborn baby (preferably in the first week or so, before they change too much and life gets too busy) a photography

session at Ashford’s modern studio in Varsity Lakes is a relaxing experience. “We take care to make baby and parents comfortable,” says Kathy. “It’s a beautiful time for new families, and they take home amazing, irreplaceable memories.” Especially popular are simple, natural close-ups of baby’s tiny features, and shots of proud new Dad cradling his little newborn. Using the latest technology, the final images are enhanced to create stunning artworks, capturing the serene beauty of pregnancy and the innocence of newborns (see examples at www.ashfordstudio.com.au). MUM’s THE by Louise Duggan

word

Mine can barely cope with the ordeal of assembling toys and replacing AA’s on Christmas morning! (Breath Lou, breath!) It’s funny, despite the crazy pre-Christmas frenzy and the horrendous thought school holidays stretching out into the abyss, I must admit this time of year does have a habit of tugging on my seemingly ever cynical heartstrings. In spite of my ever failing “peace and good will to all men”, somewhere deep in my heart the close of another year has me once again worrying about how fast life is passing me by and how quickly my three beautiful girls are growing up. Like many busy mums, I seem to spend all year yearning for a time somewhere in the future. A time when I’m six kilos lighter, when my kids become “easier”, when my schedule is quieter, and when my libido is feistier (well my husband yearns anyway!). In reality, a time when I have more time for myself. But as the year comes to a close my focus always shifts towards my love for my family, the joy of my children and the reality that time is short, precious and a gift.

I love Christmas! Wow, summer holidays again, can you believe it! Another year over, another 12 months have passed in the blink of the eye. Yes, it’s that wonderful time of the year when my life officially ends and I become possessed by some psychotic super mum, taking multi-tasking to a whole new level, while balancing dangerously on the edge of insanity. In my defence, during those eight wonderful weeks of school holidays I have two of my children’s birthday parties to organise, my mothers, mother-in-laws, sister-inlaws and two nieces birthday presents to buy, Christmas presents (for the world!) to choose, a ridiculously oversized (but highly necessary) tree to assemble, endless Christmas concerts, the nightmare that is pre-Christmas supermarket shopping and of course Christmas day itself. But just when I think it’s all over there will be four more glorious weeks of school holidays to go, not to mention the inevitable bills, kilos, bills, kilos and more bills. It’s hardly surprising I’m not swinging from the rafters singing Wizzard’s cult classic “I wish it could be Christmas everyday!” It’s fairly obvious those lyrics were written by a man and let’s face it they’re a bit rich.

get drenched

As the end of January approaches I know that all my children will be at school and I will be home alone, reflecting on the time I spent with my girls these past eight years. In my heart I know I will regret the complaints I had, the resentment I sometimes felt and the times I was too busy to play. Everything that’s truly important seems to get lost in the craziness of everyday life (especially during summer holidays), but life usually plays out that way for most of us. You see it in the unfailing patience of every grandparent who wishes that they too could have their time over. I only wish I knew how to hang onto that reality every day! So with the school holidays in full swing and the chaos of the holiday season unavoidable, I challenge you to focus on what really matters in 2009 and if you happen to see me out and about during the holidays, looking semi-psychotic, laden with shopping, miserable children in tow, don’t judge me too harshly. And maybe, if you’re feeling exceptionally brave, you could even touch me gently on the shoulder, look me knowingly in the eye and whisper gently “Merry Christmas Lou! Happy New Year” and I’ll try my hardest not to scowl!

aussie christmas

Beach, sweat and cheers!

Christmas in Australia, is quite different from those frost covered Christmas cards we all seem to send each other! Sunshine, watermelon and swimming: these are the things that spring to mind when an Aussie Christmas Day is mentioned. (Oh, and arguments over whose turn it is this year: my family or yours…but we won’t go there!) As a child, it was sometimes difficult to understand just why our Christmas celebrations were nothing like the movies or cartoons we watched; no snow to build perfect snowmen; no reindeer flitting through the forests; and the North Pole was so far away! But as we grow older, we seem to realise that, even minus the magical snow and woollen scarves, this young country of ours has developed a sense of great Aussie style, when it comes to Christmas. Sit for a moment and remember Christmas Day when you were young: Opening presents whilst Rolf Harris belted out Six White Boomers on the record player, running around in your underwear all day just to stay cool, playing under the hose for what seemed like forever (no longer socially acceptable but a fond memory nevertheless). Then there was eating mangoes until you felt sick followed by extra sweet Pavlova topped with delicious tropical fruit and cream and having a nap in the afternoon beside the fan, (air conditioning back then was for the very rich). I bet you have the picture and no doubt! If you hold onto that vision and the warm, fuzzy feeling in your tummy, it’s easy to re-create the spirit of Christmas for our own little Aussies.

The decorating

Whether you choose a real or artificial tree, the decorating of the tree is definitely one of the biggest excitements of Christmas. December 1st seems to be the accepted date for tree erection but decorations are a personal choice. You may like a “Myer perfect look”, with a few hand-made additions or a tree uniquely decorated by the kids. Crepe paper chains, pine cones (made into koalas and echidnas) and pipe cleaner kangaroos are a must. Christmas cards are often displayed on string across windows.

The build up

Christmas lights have become a massive hit with families in Australia. You may choose to spend hours in the blistering hot sun, decorating your place with flashing kangaroos and Santa in shorts, or take a “Christmas Lights Tour”. It’s an Aussie tradition to douse the kids in Aeroguard, throw on some thongs, map out ‘must see’ route and fill the car with Anzac biscuits and water: A truly lasting memory for little ones.

Christmas carols

Every child learns Six White Boomers! It is a truly iconic Australian Carol, as is Carols by Candlelight. Check out our calendar for venues and then create your individual party space. A card table, camping chairs, candles, esky, dips and nibbles (and of course, the Aeroguard) seem to be the basics. Make a lantern for each child from old jam jar, a stick, a tea-light candle and some string or wire but be sure they are aware of the dangers. Or alternatively, you may choose to visit discount shops for colourful glow sticks to be worn as earrings, headbands and necklaces. Enjoy the moment and sing along. Santa will almost always arrive on either the back of a ute or the local fire engine!

Street party

If you have never tried it, you simply must! Having a street party is a fantastic way to meet your neighbours and share in the Christmas Spirit. Unless you live on a busy street, you could set up the party on the footpath. Or choose one person’s front yard or backyard if they have a refreshing pool! Make some invitations with large gum leaves asking neighbours to BYO everything: their meat, a salad or dessert to share (White Christmas and Rum Balls are a must), their choice of drinks etc and set the party time for a cooler time of day in the late afternoon or evening. Enlist the help of the kids to pop them in the letterboxes, then organise an afternoon with neighbourhood kids making crepe paper chains! String chains and fairy lights along the street to create a festive wonderland.

Christmas eve

VERY important: Keep the children busy during the day, so they fall into bed early that night! Make sure the children don’t forget Santa and his Reindeer, by setting out an icy cold beer and some Anzac biscuits and carrots. It is thirsty work to travel Down Under!

christmas day The Morning

Christmas morning is undoubtedly similar across the world: Parents are woken at a ridiculously early hour as children realise Santa has been! The difference in Australia is that by 7am it is heating up, and a swim at the beach or in the pool is the number one aim. Cut up some mangoes and pineapple, smother on loads of sunscreen on yourself (not the mangoes) and head to the beach for a quick splash or enjoy poolside with the bonus of no sand.

The Feast

To attempt a ‘traditional’ Christmas Feast is obviously insane... however we have all tried it at least once! A much healthier and simpler Christmas Feast is an Aussie one: scrumptious fresh seafood, cold ham (prepared by someone else i.e. Mr Woolworths), a choice of salads (this is where you put in the effort), fresh bread and platters of fresh fruit. Follow this by serving Pavlova instead of plum pudding and Champagne or beer instead of egg nog. Mango and ice whizzed in the blender makes a special celebration drink for the kids.

Boxing day

Without question a day of rest! Usually even hotter than Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a day for simple things: having a sausage sizzle, keeping cool and relaxing. It may not seem as romantic as the scenes from European or American books and movies, but it is uniquely Australian: uncomplicated and sentimental -just how we would love our children to be!

Making the most of the summer holidays

by Kim Lahey and Sarah Pye

Rain or shine there’s no excuse not to get out and about this summer. This handy guide, to the best child-friendly activities close-by and further a field, is sure to propel your family into holiday mode. Try some new swimming spots, picnic places or playgrounds or turn up the adrenalin and even tackle a new sport!

Cooling off On the Gold Coast, Currumbin Creek and Tallebudgera Creek’s calm water estuaries are ideal for toddlers, with rock pools to explore and surfing beaches just around the corner. Play in the natural lagoon at Burleigh Heads and absorb the amazing coastline views from the headland and walking trails. Mermaid Beach is a little quieter with a small swell, sheltered picnic areas, bike tracks and children’s playground which make it the ideal family beach. After a swim at Kurrawa Beach

there’s always the lifesaver themed playground and a ride on the monorail to pump up the volume. Or liven up with the Gold Coast’s new water ride park WhiteWater World. It’s next to Dreamworld, has four water slides, Nickelodeon’s Pipeline Plunge, and a toddler playground. And Wet’n’Wild Water World is always an energetic day with something for all sizes, from adrenalin pumping rides in the Extreme H2O Zone to relaxing and gentle rides like Calypso Beach. Why not learn to dive with Paradise Diving Club at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Southport or enjoy the extensive facilities at the Super Sports Centre, Runaway Bay? Just a short drive north, South Bank beach’s lagoon in Brisbane area is a great place cool off after a visit to the Sciencentre, Art Gallery or Museum. Heading south, why not spend a day at Byron Bay, Fingal Head or Lennox Head?

On the water Estuary, ocean or surf fishing spots are so plentiful on the Gold Coast and the closest bait shop will give you tips on where to throw in a line. On the Gold Coast, cast a line from a boat on The Broadwater or find a boardwalk jetty at the mangrove flats near Palm Beach or Currumbin. Or go inland and fresh water fish at Hinze Dam (you will need a permit from their rangers). If you don’t have your own, why not rent a boat? Whether it’s a canoe, a tinny, party pontoon or a cruise, you can float along The Broadwater, Surfers Paradise and through the canals. Or relax on a guided Gold Coast tour. For a relaxing day out take a cruise out from the Broadwater and Surfers Paradise. Or, if you are feeling active, kayak to Stradbroke Island with Australian Kayaking Adventures. Along the way, feed and snorkel with sub-tropical fish and marine life. For something different Aquaduck amphibious vehicle at Surfers Paradise lets you experience the Gold Coast by land and water without moving from your seat!

Family adventure and adrenalin Our warm coastal water is the perfect place to learn to surf! Former world champion Cheyne Horan offers learn to surf classes at Surfers Paradise and there are similar operations at all other major beaches. Most use soft boards to avoid injury and run special classes for children, so don’t forget to ask when you call. The Gold Coast offers a plethora of rides: Seaworld has thrill rides for bigger kids, carousels and cartoon beach rides for smaller kids and an educational component too. Get close and personal with colourful fish, sharks, polar bears, dolphins and seals. Then there’s Dreamworld – or ‘ride central’ with big thrill rides for big and Nickelodeon Central for the under fives. (We recommend you hire a stroller for tired kids at most large theme parks). Warner Brothers Movie World comes alive with favourite characters, rides and special effects while Le Mans Kart Racing, Pimpama

has a 700m long adrenalin pumping circuit. Their dual karts are especially designed for under 13s to ride with an adult and they flash your lap time as you speed around the course. Outdoor adventure centre - Zorb Gold Coast at Pimpama – will see you soaked on the hydro ride, or staying dry on the harness ride. Jump into a 3.2m high clear plastic inflated ball and descend onto custom designed tracks, it’s safe and a lot of fun. Why not join the circus for the holidays? Aerial Angels Academy will be holding school holiday workshops for ages from 2 years old in Circus, Dance and Music. Bookings are essential. A short drive north, Kangaroo Point’s Riverlife Adventure Centre is a place to stretch your personal envelope, right in the heart of Brisbane. Kayak day or night on the Brisbane River, rock climb or abseil the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, or hire a bike or rollerblades.

Help – it’s raining!

Great on any day, but a lifesaver when it’s raining, these are our favourite wet weather activities. Timezone Surfers Paradise is a huge indoor family entertainment centre with over 350 games including laser skirmish, large dodgems/bumper cars, 18-hole mini golf, mad wave motion theatre and bowling! For an unbeatable view of the Gold Coast visit Q Deck at Surfers Paradise. Travel to the top of the world’s tallest residential tower in a fast elevator to take in spectacular 360 degree views from the surf to the hinterland. Or why not visit a place where everything is made of ice? At Minus 5 degrees, Surfers Paradise, even the seats you sit on are frozen water! Over eights will love the interactive futuristic maze at Infinity, Surfers Paradise and the bizarre and unusual at the Ripley’s Believe it or not museum. Indoor play centres are a great way to release a little pent up energy after a few days indoors. They are a godsend for parents of under fives who want to watch their little ones play in a safe place while they relax over coffee with friends so why not visit Abrakidazzle at Southport, Smileez Playhouse and cafe at Parkwood or Bubble it Up at Southport? It’s also worth checking out Paramount Adventure

HAPPY

by Sarah Pye

On this occasion the weary mother chooses to leave her precious cargo below the high water mark and our guide, ranger John, digs another chamber. Before too long we are gingerly carrying a precious cargo of eggs from one nest to the other.

Up close and personal with

It is almost 10pm – way past the bed time of a four-year-old, yet she sits motionless in the sand, transfixed on the miracle unfolding in front of her. Also in a daze, a female loggerhead turtle concentrates on popping out 140 spherical eggs into the cone-shaped chamber she dug just a few just minutes ago. It’s one of nature’s wonders, to match the whale migration or the march of the penguins, and it takes place every year, on the coast of Queensland. Mon Repos, near Bundaberg, offers the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and Queensland Parks and Wildlife says it is “the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific Ocean region”. You may not know it, but the sex of baby turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand. At Mon Repos, where the dark sands holds the heat, the majority of hatchlings are female and when a female loggerhead reaches the age of 30 she travels back to the beach of her birth to continue the life-cycle. There are two distinct ‘seasons’ at Mon Repos – the laying and the hatching. The first takes place from November to January and the second from January to March. Divided into groups and shown videos about the star attraction we settle into an open air amphitheatre and waited for the spectacle to begin. During the laying, rangers patrol the beach watching for incoming turtles. When a female comes ashore and starts to dig a nest in the sand above the high water mark, they lead our small group quietly along the sand to watch.

Create the s e best memori d in the worl

It is almost 11pm by the time I carry my heavy, sleeping child back along the path to our tent at Turtle Sands Tourist Park. She’s finally hit the wall, but even in her sleep she clutches a certificate telling her about the turtle she’s watched lay 127 eggs. As her heavy eyelids close I promise we will return for the hatching. Eight weeks later we are back. Its dark and rangers search for eruptions in the sand. When the turtles start to hatch the sand sinks, indicating they are about to emerge and our group is led to the beach. I had thought nothing could surpass the laying experience, but I was quickly proved wrong. As the tiny reptiles emerge, kids or all ages (me included) catch their breath as rangers collect the babies in a small enclosure to count and record the nest’s yield. Then comes an experience that will live with us for ever. Our ranger asks us to form a tunnel with our legs apart (just like tunnel ball). Shining torches on the legs in front, we light the way to the waves. Within seconds the ground is crawling as little flippers propels the reptiles to freedom. “It’s on my foot, mum!” my daughter exclaims in utter disbelief. As we watch the tiny babies battle the surf, get knocked back and keep on trying, I can’t help but feel a motherly connection. The reality is, only a miniscule percentage will make it to adulthood… but those who do will be back in 30 years to start the process again. Mon Repos is about 3.5 hours drive north of the Sunshine Coast. From Bundaberg, follow signs to Bargara and then to Mon Repos. BOOK REVIEWS TALES OF MY GRANDMOTHER’S DREAMTIME

By Naiura This is a beautifully presented hardcover containing stunning artwork and enchanting stories. The tales of the Dreamtime are passed down through many generations and were told to the author by her grandmother. Stories such as The Brolga and the Rainbow Snake are embedded with lessons and a deeper meaning. A colourful painting sits alongside each story, keeping the younger children enthralled to the finish. This is a wonderful edition that will continue to be cherished long after it needs to be read aloud.

THE FAMOUS FIVE’S SURVIVAL GUIDE

By Enid Blyton A great one for the Christmas stocking! First released in 1942, Enid Blyton books continue to delight children of all ages. Both boys and girls will enjoy this survival guide full of adventure and mystery. A compendium of handy tips and information on surviving outdoors, accompanied by useful diagrams and pictures. This was the only mystery the Famous Five were unable to solve; the whereabouts of the priceless Royal Dragon of Siam. An exciting challenge for a new generation of avid sleuths and mystery buffs.

Low to No Additives – Family Favourites

By Olivia Dyer and Bridy Fulvio You’ll never look at a supermarket shelf the same way after you read this book. It says what “goes into processed food, must come out in our behaviour or health” and decodes the dangerous additives in food. This handy guide provides a shopping list of the lowest additive brands and offers 120 recipes which range from plain to reasonably spicy. The authors are mums who have taken the mystery out of additives because their children experienced allergies and behavioural problems. They say they have read every product label used in the book, and it shows. Their expertise will certainly save you a lot of time reading labels and help you get out of the supermarket quicker!

Walt Disney Pictures - presents HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL SENIOR YEAR

MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA www.madagascar2.com.au In cinemas December 18, rated G

www.home.disney.com.au/movies In cinemas December 4, rated G Tweens across the globe are devouring advance tickets to this year’s musical phenomenon. Those cynical parents among us who might think the third in any series is just an excuse to milk the box office, may be surprised by a review in the Daily Mail which says, “Unlike most ‘threequels’, it surpasses its two predecessors. It has glossier production values, catchier songs and even a little more story.” It has been compared to the original Grease and “The good news is that it’s entertaining whatever your age”. Although predictable, the plot is heartwarming. Amidst a basketball championship, prom and a big spring musical featuring all of the Wildcats, Troy and Gabriella promise to make every moment last. Meanwhile they are planning to attend different colleges and the future of their relationship is in question. The star-studded cast are all there – Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu. So, synchronise you watches and count the sleeps. HSM3 is coming!

In this, the sequel of the first movie, the New York Zoo animals, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo are still stranded on Madagascar. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane and they plan to fly home. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just long enough to make it to the wildest place of all—the vast plains of Africa. There, Alex meets the rest of his family but he has trouble communicating with them after much of his time at the Central Park Zoo. Animated movie lovers will enjoy the voices of Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer and Chris Rock. Three family passes are up for grabs (admit 4) to see MADAGASAR thanks to Paramount Studios.
