Are you a ‘baby’ parent or a ‘kid’ parent?

I’m 100% a kid parent. I don’t go gooey at babies (they still scare me!), and I don’t miss those early years of sleepless nights and trying to interpret the cries. But I love being part of my kids’ growth and learning, so each year of parenting that goes by is more fulfilling than the last.

The only time I wish my kids were teeny tiny again is when I look at today’s childcare options. Gone are the cramped rooms where the only real purpose of the centre was to ensure the child slept, was fed and had a clean bum.

Today, there are nutritious meals, yoga and music lessons, facilities better than most hotels I’ve ever stayed at, activities that cater to every interest, and naturebased play spaces that your own inner child is desperate to explore.

Luckily, my work allows me to still visit and explore these marvellous spaces and witness the wonder on the kids’ faces with every new thing they learn. I got to

experience this when we visited the new state-of-the-art AELC College in Marsden and the playground at Heritage Park (see page 18 for more on that!). Seeing exactly what is possible when creating a childcare centre from the ground up … it blew my mind.

Of course, summer is almost here, so we chat with learn-to-swim expert Chris Shapland to find out the essentials of water safety this summer, some of these really surprised me, too!

Our services cover all of Queensland areas including regional and remote, and we currently have clinic rooms in Woolloongabba, Benowa (Gold Coast), Dayboro (Moreton Bay), and Bundaberg.

It is estimated that 10 to 16 percent of Australians have a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and have support needs. An estimated 80% of those with learning disorders have an impairment in reading and spelling (commonly referred to as dyslexia). Other SLDs are an impairment in mathematics (commonly referred to as dyscalculia) and in written expression (commonly referred to as dysgraphia).

If you think your child has a learning disorder, then the first step is to talk to their teacher. If there is still a concern then a formal assessment can be undertaken.

Speld QLD is a not-for profit organisation that includes a team of highly experienced psychologists who can perform a variety of assessments. Our services are designed to benefit all individuals struggling with literacy and/or numeracy acquisition, regardless of whether or not they have been identified with a learning disorder.

RECORD LIBRARY VISITS IN BRISBANE

Brisbane libraries are starting an exciting new chapter after experiencing a massive increase in visitor numbers over the last 12 months.

New figures reveal Brisbane’s network of 33 libraries recorded more than 5 million visitors in 2022-2023, or about 14,000 residents every day.

The 2022-23 visitor numbers were 1.2 million more than the previous year and the biggest recorded since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said his Council team is committed to investing in Brisbane’s libraries, which offer free and affordable fun for residents of all ages.

“Brisbane residents clearly love our libraries, and that’s why we have a plan to continue to invest in them,” Cr Schrinner said.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this massive increase in visitor numbers to our libraries also coincides with rapidly rising living costs.

“Our Council is committed to delivering free and affordable fun for residents, and our libraries offer far more than just a great range of books to borrow.

“Our libraries also have music, magazines and movies and offer many services such as book clubs, reading programs, computer training, events and workshops.

“With costs continuing to increase, our libraries will play an increasingly important role in helping keep residents entertained and connected for free.”

Brisbane libraries are open seven days a week and offer hundreds of free and low-cost activities year-round for residents of all ages.

“Whether it’s mums and bubs story time, creative writing workshops, author talks, or social media tips for seniors, there is always something to see and do at our libraries,” Cr Schrinner said.

Poor report card for children’s wellbeing

While COVID-19 lockdowns are no longer mandated, the stress and anxiety of the pandemic still lingers, according to health experts at the University of South Australia.

In a new study, researchers show that children’s mental health and wellbeing have gradually worsened over the past six years, particularly during and post the pandemic. Examining measures of wellbeing—life satisfaction, optimism, happiness, cognitive engagement, emotional regulation, perseverance, worry, and sadness—among more than 56,000 school children (in grades 4 to 9 and aged 9 to 14), the study found that most wellbeing measures declined over time, consistently worsening from 2020 onwards.

It also found that female students, children in higher year levels, and students from lower socioeconomic cohorts were more likely to have poor wellbeing than their counterparts. Wellbeing covers various dimensions of psychological,

physical, emotional, cognitive, and social experiences.

Lead researcher, UniSA’s Dr Dot Dumuid, says the COVID-19 pandemic has had long-lasting disruptions for Australian children.

“During the pandemic, children had to change the way they learn, play and socialise, all the while living in an environment of widespread uncertainty and anxiety,” Dr Dumuid says.

“Now that pandemic restrictions have been lifted, life has not necessarily returned to pre-pandemic standards. And when we assessed how children have fared in terms of wellbeing across this period, the news was not good.”

Dr Dumuid says now is a particularly critical time to support young people’s wellbeing.

“There is a clear indication that urgent and equitable support is needed to improve the wellbeing of all young people, particularly those facing disparity,” Dr Dumuid says.

“This is not only important for children’s present experiences, but also their future potential.”

Combining an exceptional curriculum with the nurturing environment of childcare, Australian Early Learning Colleges is an exciting new concept in the early learning space.

When Georgiana Karam opened Adam & Noah Early Learning College nine years ago, she never imagined it would become such a pivotal service in Brisbane’s early learning space. Fast forward to today, and this innovative early learning centre has recently undergone a rebrand, opened a new centre in Marsden and has upgraded its already impressive outdoor adventure park . But what’s the story behind its success?

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

It all began when Georgiana sought a long daycare and early learning centre for her children. She wanted more options that provided the love, care and educational needs she wanted. But with no facility meeting her high expectations, she created her own.

“I wanted an early learning service that cared for the children within but also focused on developing an exceeding educational program,” Georgiana says.

“We wanted to go above and beyond, delivering unlimited early years learning opportunities with a focus on learning through play.”

The first state-of-theart building and outdoor adventure area was named after her two sons, Adam and Noah Early Learning College, with a mission to provide a solid academic foundation for every student.

PLAY-BASED LEARNING

With a focus on play-based learning, the purpose-built centre features state-of-theart classrooms and an out-of-this-world adventure playground!

Aptly named Outdoor Adventureland, there are four distinct areas of the outdoor play area:

City Adventure: This features three themed outdoor permanent marquees with roads/bike tracks, traffic lights, and a zebra crossing.

Ancient & Archeological World Adventure: With an Egyptian pyramid where you can dig for fossils, climb a life-sized T-Rex, step in a T-Rex footprint, ride a camel, climb in an aeroplane and jump on board a life-sized pirate ship. Two sports areas: Includes a multi-sports court and a long jump pit.

An animal farm: Includes Australian stingless honeybees, a veggie garden, fruit trees and a mud pit.

This year, the outdoor play space was upgraded to include an outdoor stage, a second sandpit, a water feature and a creek. The bike track now also has traffic lights and a shopfront, and the farm yard has been revamped with planter boxes, a chicken

shed, a yarning circle, and indigenous plants.

The expansive outdoor space is complemented by The Fun Spaceship indoor play centre right next door. Also part of the Adam & Noah group, this play centre is a kids’ wonderland with air cannons, climb-in UFOs and rockets, a rock climbing wall, soft play equipment, a giant slide and more.

Adam & Noah’s popular vacation care program regularly utilises both play spaces. Provided for children aged five to 13 years, kids can join in Masterchef days, discos, and bike and scooter days at the epic Outdoor Adventureland. That’s when they aren’t enjoying excursions to the Science Centre, Australia Zoo, The Railway Museum, Sea World, Movie World, bush walks, playing at water parks and more.

“We know how hard the school holiday time is for working parents, so we wanted to provide the best vacation care program possible, keeping kids busy, having fun and learning throughout the whole school break,” says Georgiana.

“We wanted to go above and beyond, delivering unlimited early years learning opportunities with a focus on learning through play.”

This year, the busy early learning service has evolved into Australian Early Learning Colleges by Adam & Noah. Ready to expand its footprint, the rebrand signals the service’s next step in educational excellence and commitment to nurturing young minds.

“This represents our unwavering dedication to providing the highest quality early childhood education while extending our reach to communities in the surrounding Brisbane regions,” says Georgiana.

THE NEW AELC CENTRE IN MARSDEN

The new AELC centre opened in Marsden in winter 2023 and follows Australian Early Learning College’s advanced curriculum that covers language, maths, science, safety, health, social skills, engineering, drama, acting, music, sports, and much more.

The program is a play-based learning and helps develop children’s physical, social, intellectual, language and emotional abilities.

Children enjoy excursions to the Heritage Park centre to utilise the Outdoor Adventureland facilities. Vacation care and before and after-school care are also available.

“At Marsden Early Learning College, we

provide an environment that stimulates child-initiated activities with uninterrupted periods of play alongside Educators, facilitating and scaffolding children’s endeavours,” says Georgiana.

Need to burn off some serious kid-energy without it costing a cent? Ipswich is home to an impressive array of parks that go well beyond the everyday swing set. From epic water playgrounds to mini bike tracks (one even has a free zoo!), here are five of the best parks in Ipswich you must visit.

ROBELLE DOMAIN PARKLANDS

Spanning 24 hectares and with walking tracks, cycleways, barbecues, playgrounds, sheltered picnic benches and large grassy areas, Robelle Domain is one the best parks in Ipswich for families.

The main attraction for families is Orion Lagoon, which has swimming pools up to 1.5m deep at one end and shallow streams with stepping stones perfect for toddlers at the other. Across the road from the lagoon (while not officially part of Robelle Domain), you’ll find the vast Orion Playground, which includes a colossal three-storey tower with mega slides and a 16-metre skywalk bridge.  There are also rope climbing structures, inbuilt trampolines, swings, a music panel and plenty of toddler-sized play equipment.

Robelle Domain also features a zero-depth water park with a giant tipping bucket and jet sprays. Surrounding the water park is various play equipment, including swings, see-saws and climbing equipment. There is even a kids’ interactive music area.

FAYE CARR PARK

There is something for everyone at Faye Carr Park! There is a play zone for the little ones, with swings and rope ladders. Plus, there is a super-cute bike track with a mini roundabout and road signs.

QUEENS PARK

Queens Park is one of those places where you can easily spend the entire day. Home to the Ipswich Nature Centre, this pramfriendly zoo cares for an array of animals, including wallabies, turtles, birds, reptiles, and marsupials. The walk-through aviary, Bilby tunnel and petting barn are all excellent ways for kids to get up close and meet the animals. Entry is free, but a gold coin donation is appreciated.

Queens Park also has a fab playground with a small water play area, a train, slides, multiple swings, a liberty swing, a climbing wall, and one of the most enormous flying foxes in the region.

BOB GAMBLE PARK

Another epic Ipswich park with both water and adventure play, Bob Gamble Park is a favourite for Ipswich kids of all ages. There are two water play areas: one consists of a collection of water troughs and shallow streams with stepping stones, ideal for little ones; the other has numerous water spouts, perfect for the older kids to play in.

There is also an impressive playground with a climbing frame and slides, swings, sand diggers and a 25-metre flying fox. Kids will also love the Discovery Forest set amongst the trees, with two forts, balance

beams, wooden totem poles, a sailing boat and more to ignite their imagination.

RIPLEY’S SPLASH ‘N’ PLAY

Are you looking to cool off? Ripley’s Splash ’n’ Play Park is where it’s at. Featuring water fountains and sprayers that cater for kids of all ages, shallow streams to play in, and plenty of benches scattered around for supervising parents, it’s great for families. There is a playground for the smaller kids, with climbing equipment, swings and nets, and one for the older kids, with a massive fort, giant slides and a flying fox.

Saturday morning, pack the car and head to the heritage city, only 30 minutes from Brisbane. Your first stop is brunch at Dancing Bean Espresso Bar. Let the kids play in the children’s nook. Tuck into French toast, eggs Benny, nachos, milkshakes and croissants. Enjoy the locally roasted coffee beans, and don’t forget to grab a take-home pack.

After breakfast, walk along Brisbane Street to explore boutique stores like Embers & Twine, which stocks handmade goodies, Arttime Gallery and Fine Art Supplies for art and artisan gifts and Oh! JoJo Boutique for some Christmas gifts. Wander to the Old Flour Mill for The Soul Cauldron, an eclectic store with everything from sage to potions

and books.

Take the kids to The Workshops Rail Museum for the afternoon to explore the birthplace of Queensland Rail. Let the kids explore the train simulators, little nippers area and the Sciencentre.

When you’re ready, check into your accommodation for the night. Stay in the middle of town at Oaks Ipswich Aspire Suites, conveniently located next door to one of Ipswich’s best restaurants, Bakehouse Steakhouse or stay at Quest Ipswich for excellent service and amenities. Designed by acclaimed event and lighting specialist Sharon Penny, almost 250m of wondrous lights create an impressive walk-through experience that welcomes visitors to the precinct. If you haven’t eaten yet, you can grab food at one of the restaurants in the precinct or head up towards the magnificent 9m tall City Christmas Tree (you won’t miss it) to dine at Indian Mehfil.

Understanding the power of intuitive healing

Amidst the turmoil of her husband's unexpected passing in 2020 and the challenges of the COVID pandemic on her professional life, musculoskeletal therapist Olivia Slater courageously embarked on a transformative journey as a medical intuitive. Today, in 2023, she has become a beacon of healing, offering extraordinary and compassionate therapy sessions. We sit down with this remarkable Gold Coast mother of three, to find out more about her inspiring story and the empowering path she has chosen to follow.

COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT INTUITIVE HEALING?

Through one-on-one coaching, I help you to unpack emotional and physical baggage that is no longer serving you. When physical ailments and illnesses show up, it’s an invitation to dig deeper to understand more about ourselves and to listen to what our body needs. The more we ignore or push away these signs our body offers us, the more we are invited to take action.

Many individuals remain unaware of the profound impact that past trauma can exert on both their physical and metaphysical wellbeing. They’ve got ongoing physical ailments and illnesses that they can’t shift, or there's a blockage in their life that they can't quite put their finger on.

Throughout my practice, I have encountered diverse cases—from individuals struggling with fertility issues, broken bones, and chronic illnesses to bronchitis and irritable bowel syndrome—illustrating the profound interconnectedness of physical and emotional health.

At the initial consultation, people often have no inkling that the root cause lies in

their past traumas. Together we carefully delve into these deep-seated issues of traumas embedded within the physical body.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS ‘TRAUMA’?

Trauma presents itself in various forms and circumstances, encompassing both sudden and childhood experiences. Sudden traumas may arise from events like relationship breakdowns, violence, illness, or grief. On the other hand, childhood traumas can emerge from unmet needs during crucial developmental stages.

The process of healing revolves around acknowledging these events and

delving into the emotions they evoke. Frequently, individuals grapple with feelings of abandonment, fear, a sense of lost innocence, or diminished freedom. Although confronting such emotions can be emotionally weighty and require vulnerability, it is within this space that true transformation occurs. By exploring and processing these feelings, individuals can embark on a journey towards healing and growth.

WHAT SPARKED THE MOVE TO INTUITIVE HEALING FOR YOU?

During my childhood, I endured the terrible experience of sexual abuse, and in 2020,

I faced the unexpected and devastating loss when my partner passed away shortly after being diagnosed. The suddenness of this event left me as a single mother to our three children, all while grappling with the additional challenge of losing my job due to the COVID pandemic. It felt as though everything I had known was torn away, leaving me with a profound sense of helplessness and lack of control.

To navigate through this immense grief and upheaval, I made a conscious choice to channel my emotions into productive outlets rather than allowing them to consume me. Witnessing how grief could overwhelm others, I made a vow to myself and my

children that I would approach it differently, seeking ways to process my feelings constructively.

My life experiences have provided me with a deep understanding of trauma and grief. I have personally confronted the need to reassess and rebuild my life, both as a result of my childhood trauma and the sudden changes as a single parent.

Throughout this journey, I have found strength and solace in my unwavering belief that anyone can achieve remarkable transformations if they are genuinely committed to unlocking the barriers that hinder their progress. With this profound commitment, I strive to help others tap into their inner resilience and overcome their obstacles, no matter how daunting they may appear.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THERAPY?

I have six years of experience as a musculoskeletal therapist. Working so intensively with people and the physical body, I could always sense that there was something deeper. I was seeing people with reoccurring injuries, and I just kept thinking and feeling that there must be something deeper going on. However, my training didn't really allow me the tools to go deeper. So after my husband had passed away, I came across a medical intuitive with whom I did a year’s training. Combining both disciplines now, I offer a comprehensive and insightful healing approach.

HOW DO YOU COMBINE BOTH PHYSICAL AND INTUITIVE HEALING INTO ONE SESSION?

Through my practice, I've discovered that extensive physical intervention is often unnecessary. Drawing upon my honed intuition, I can sense when unresolved issues require deeper exploration.

Many times, individuals simply need to confront and sit with the emotions linked to their traumas or fears—such as abandonment or feeling unsafe. This process becomes an additional avenue for healing, leading to remarkable transformations in both their physical wellbeing and overall life.

Soaring family fun at Australia’s ultimate high ropes park!

Did you think the high ropes course at Sunshine Plaza is just for the teens and grown ups?

Think again because this epic adventure park has courses for kids from six years old. And yes, it’s fun for adults too!

Located at Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore, Next Level is Australia’s largest high ropes course.

The courses come in four levels. So when you are standing underneath, looking up and wondering what to do, remember: the higher you climb, the more challenging it becomes.

Don’t worry, staff are there to monitor the towers, and grown-up supervision ratios apply.

Children ages 13 years and over can climb without an adult. But that’s no reason to sit out! It’s a fantastic activity to do as a family.

If you have non-climbers in your group, spectators can head up to the Viewing Deck, where you get a birds-eye view of all the courses. Visits to the Viewing Deck are free!

This epic adventure park also offers superfun birthday parties, group bookings and KidZip sessions during the school holidays—where the Next Level team take kids (aged 6-12) on supervised climbs. So there are plenty of ways to climb, whatever your bravery level and ages.

Start your session with this easy and fun level! Crawl through the net tunnels, sidestep on the stepping stone bridge, and sway along the pirate walk. A great way to get comfortable before you go next level! Zig-zag and slide your way past the Plaza, take a giant step, watch the dominoes fall, or get down on all fours to crawl along the double helix ladder.

MEDIUM (AGES EIGHT YEARS +)

PLAZA PURSUIT & MAROOCHY MAYHEM

12 metres high, three zip lines, 23 challenges that loop around three towers

Check out the view as you dart between this mayhem-filled circuit! Swerve between dangling vines, tip-toe the wobbling wooden bridges and enjoy the view of Maroochydore as you climb the staircase to heaven! If you’re up for a challenge, this is the circuit you want to begin with.

Refine your balancing skills with this heart-racing circuit! Slowly inch across the narrow tight ropes, step up and over wooden hurdles, and hold your breath while the bridges swing side to side. Keep an eye out for the moving scissor logs too!

ADVANCED (10 YEARS +) RIVER REVENGE & HIGHLINE HUSTLE

15 metres high, three zip lines, 23 challenges that loop around three towers

Get down low and GO GO GO! This circuit will have you navigating ropes, weaving between poles and darting across the ninja slopes! Designed for adrenaline junkies, this circuit will make you sweat!

Feel the nerves rise as you hustle along this high-wire circuit. Run across spinning logs or balance on spring-loaded discs. You might also find your sea legs while crossing the drunken sailor wine barrels! Be ready for a challenge!

EXPERT (13 YEARS +)

NEXT-LEVEL NINJA

18 metres high, eight super tough challenges on one tower. Get ready for the ultimate challenge with the ninja level! Test your grip strength on the knotted ropes, swing from rope to rope, or traverse across cargo nets, all while dangling 18 metres above the ground!

WHICH SWIM SCHOOL YOU CHOOSE MATTERS

There are varying swim schools available, each with its own approach. Therefore, choosing the right swim school makes a huge difference! For example, Shapland Swim Schools’ purpose-built pools are very different to the pools you will see at school or your local community aquatic centre. Each has eight to 11 different water depths, incorporating a series of steps. So, we’re meeting the child where they’re at. These gradual depths allow for progressive learning in a moderated way where kids can get confidence.

SWIMMING LESSONS NEED CONSISTENCY AND CONTINUAL GROWTH

As children move into different aquatic environments, they need different skills to match the environment. Therefore, a child’s learn-to-swim program must include teaching a vast range of skills and offer constant progression.

SUPERVISION IS CRITICAL TO WATER SAFETY

Adult supervision is the first and most crucial step in water safety for kids. If every adult with a child around any body of water had their child under constant supervision and within arm’s length—whether bathtubs, buckets, swimming pools or surf—it would severely reduce the number of deaths by drowning.

How we live has changed over the years. Today, our time and attention are in higher demand; we are busier and more likely to be distracted by technology and multitasking. Therefore, this message of constant supervision is increasingly pertinent.

LEARN TO SWIM … PROPERLY

All kids in Queensland learn to swim to a basic level. However, there is still a significant discrepancy in how well kids learn.

A child isn’t automatically safe around water as soon as they can fall in and swim back to the side of a pool. They might be safe in that pool, but the outcome could be very different if your child swims in an unfamiliar pool or more demanding body of water such as a lake or canal. Plus, if parents happen to

be distracted, kids need stronger swim skills to keep themselves safe for those vital few minutes

For kids to be reasonably safe in the water, kids need to be able to swim approximately 400 metres—or eight laps of a 50-metre pool. The older they get, the more adventurous they will get. If they’re going to go surfing or engage in any water activity, they need to be strong swimmers. This skill level doesn’t come overnight. Like piano lessons or footy training, gaining those skills and confidence takes years of practice. By the time they are young adults, they need the level of technique and strength to cope in all situations, so it doesn’t matter which direction the wind is coming from or if they are caught in a rip. A whole range of skill levels come into play to facilitate a person being okay if they have an aquatic accident.

Just like the depths of our pools, our learn-to-swim program has many levels that all lead on from the next. Each stage adds new stroke techniques and water safety challenges.

This gradual and consistent growth helps children naturally improve as they become more confident in the water and provides continuity in their learning.

Learning to swim isn’t a task to tick off. Constant skill development and adaptation is required. There is always more to learn!

Is your newborn unsettled?

We chat with osteopath Victoria McLelland to find out how osteopathy may help to soothe babies with birth trauma.

The newborn days can be a hazy blur of boundless joy and utter exhaustion, all wrapped up in a bundle of overwhelm. But did you know that how these early weeks pan out can be significantly shaped by a baby’s birth experience?

“It doesn’t have to be a medicalised or a complicated birth for birth trauma to happen,” says osteopath Dr Victoria McLelland. “No matter how a baby arrives into this world—the force of contractions, the length of labour, the use of instruments—these all shape the beginning weeks of a newborn’s life.”

In their early days, newborns instinctively engage in activities like suckling, yawning, and crying to alleviate the strains of the birthing process. However, as time progresses, parents might notice unsettled behaviour, excessive crying, flat spots on the head, a preference for one side of the body, and feeding or sleeping difficulties in their babies. These issues can often be linked to unresolved trauma from birth.

“Osteopathy can play a role in releasing these strains,” says Victoria. “By delicately enabling newborns to regain the full function of their musculoskeletal systems, it can lead to healthier behaviours and a more settled baby!"

CHILD-CENTRED CLINIC

Seeing the benefits that osteopathy has had

for newborns and children, Victoria has created a child-centred osteopathy clinic specifically designed with families in mind.

Cotlew St. Osteopathy includes a second reception area for new mothers to be able to take their time to feed and change their babies pre- or post-treatment. This warm, child-friendly space is filled with toys and books for children and siblings to play. There is parking directly in front, and it is pram-friendly.

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Osteopathy is a hands-on healthcare practice that uses movement of the body, focusing on joints, muscles, nerves, lymphatics and circulation to help improve the underlying function of the area. When mobility and function improve, quite often, there is a reduction in inflammation and pain, and we can start to feel better. It’s a different way of

addressing discomfort and pain without the use of drugs. Australian Osteopaths are university-trained, government-registered, allied health professionals.
