Where Learning and Wellbeing Interconnect Exploring Mount Alvernia’s formula for success

In the dynamic landscape of education, Mount Alvernia College is committed to nurturing the intrinsic link that exists between learning and wellbeing for all students. The Kedron-based girls’ Catholic college understands that exceptional student care within a learning community is only possible when the best elements of wellbeing and academic challenge interconnect. Central to the philosophy of student Educational Wellbeing at Mount Alvernia College is the belief that every student is an individual deserving of being known, valued, and respected. It is this foundation that cultivates a sense of belonging and purpose, laying the groundwork for an educational journey that extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. Now in her fourth year at the helm, College Principal Samantha Jensen is proud to share that this philosophical approach has reaped outstanding academic results. “Each year, we are reaching new benchmarks and celebrating recordingbreaking results in both NAPLAN and Senior outcomes. These achievements not only reflect our academic success but also the holistic development nurtured at our college,” said Samantha.

“Our approach goes beyond textbooks and exams. By intertwining wellbeing and academic challenge, our college is not just preparing students for exams but, more importantly, for life! We are committed to progress over perfection everytime and in doing so, I believe we are setting a new standard within the private school realm. This standard guarantees students thrive not just academically but socially and emotionally,” said Samantha. “We recognise the importance of collaboration between educators and parents. Again, our commitment to working closely in partnership with parents underscores the belief that fostering a student’s wellbeing is a collective effort that requires collaboration between the home and school. Commencing each year with individual Homeroom Mentor Meetings sets the scene for this successful partnership,” said Samantha. In an era where adaptability and self-directed learning are becoming increasingly valuable, Mount Alvernia

College is paving the way for students to not only understand ‘how to learn’ but also to develop the confidence, courage, and self-belief necessary to manage new challenges.

Student Educational Wellbeing is realised when ... • There is a deep knowledge of the students in our care: every student is known, valued and respected. • Explicit wellbeing and faithbased programs connect to student learning opportunities to develop spirituality, purpose and meaning. • Strategies that cultivate learner agency, self-efficacy and selfregulation are explicit, such that students understand ‘how to learn’, know their next learning steps and have the tools to build confidence, courage, self-belief, and to manage new learnings. • Excellence, effort and improvement are always acknowledged and celebrated.

ravelling was always a massive part of my life BK (BeforeKids). It came with plenty of highs (working at a beach bar in the Balearics) and plennnnnnty of lows (stranded with food poisoning on the salt flats of Bolivia). But that all came to a halt once I became a parent. People say you can travel with a baby. But I couldn’t fathom it. For me, even doing a grocery run with a newborn was a challenge. Between the sleepless nights, the feeding, and scraping together enough money to pay the bills, jumping on a plane was a distant memory. And let’s not get into the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis! But the silver lining of this story? Over the last few years, we have discovered the joy of the family ‘mini-break’. We go places that we can reach in the car; where the kids will eat the food, and there are things to do that everyone will enjoy. It’s affordable (many we can camp at), we don’t go for long so we don’t have to kennel the dogs—or

even better, we go where we can take them too! And there is so much to explore in southeast Queensland; we haven’t scratched the surface. So, this issue, we celebrate the mini-break. Those incredible places that we have right on our doorstep. From camping and holiday parks to epic kids clubs and once-in-alifetime experiences, they are all within easy reach of Brisbane. Also, in this issue, we visit out-of-thisworld indoor playcentre, The Fun Spaceship, and plan the ultimate space-themed birthday party. And, because all families are really feeling the financial pinch right now, we’ve gone out to the local business community to collect discount codes for our readers. They are for anything and everything related to kid-sized living in southeast Queensland. You’ll find them at the back of the issue. Plus, we have all the regular news, reviews, events and activities—all bundled up in a super-duper Autumn edition! If you are ever stuck for something to do with the kids, don’t forget to jump onto our website where you’ll find an easy-to-use calendar with the region’s best kid-friendly activities: kidsinthecity.com.au/events.

Putting the fun back into

‘SLIP SLOP SL AP’ UNITY EQUESTRIAN

Where horse riding is for everyone Unity Equestrian is a unique equestrian school with a mission to make horse riding accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Unity Equestrian is redefining the horse riding experience, where it’s not just about conquering jumps or mastering gaits; it’s about building a bond with majestic creatures, one gentle step at a time. Unity’s philosophy is based on community and connection. All riders learn horsemanship, grooming, tacking and begin creating a bond with their horse before riding. Building a mutual foundation of respect. “Riders need know and trust their horse or pony,” explains Mel Fernandes-Ferreira, Head Coach at Unity. “Horses need to know and trust their riders, and that’s when the magic happens.” This philosophy shines brightest in the children’s program. Through fun games and safe exercises, young riders learn to confidently navigate the world of horses. “We believe every rider deserves to learn at their own pace,” says Mel, “so we personalise plans and check in regularly, ensuring everyone reaches their goals.” Unity’s inclusivity extends far

12

beyond traditional riding lessons. Recognising the calming power of horses, they offer special NDIS programs for individuals with disabilities. These programs, whether riding-based or not, provide valuable opportunities for interaction, connection, and finding peace in the presence of these gentle giants. For parents, Unity’s adult riding community is a haven. “We have a fantastic group of adult riders, perhaps returning to riding or learning to ride. These riders have formed a community of people taking an hour or so out of their day to do something purely for them. Plus, it’s great exercise! People think the horses do all the work… they don’t!” Mel says. Unity’s commitment to community extends beyond lessons, offering exciting school holiday camps where children deepen their bond with horses through riding and horsemanship activities and plenty of fun with friends. 22 Toula Ct, Advancetown www.unityequestrian.com.au

As we come into summer, sunscreen battles become a daily fixture in many households. We all want to get outside as quickly as possible, but applying the necessary sunscreen to wriggling little people is exasperating! Solar Buddies was born out of this precise frustration and has now been brought to life in Australia by Sunshine Coast mums Zara and Jess. This ingenious award-winning refillable sunscreen applicator is unique because of its sponge and roller-ball partnership. The roller-ball dispenses and the sponge glides the sunscreen across the skin. This means that you never have to touch the sunscreen as the sponge does the work of your hands. It’s also better for the planet, as you can buy a giant sunscreen of your choice and simply fill up your Solar Buddies as and when you need it. It holds 100ml, so it is the perfect size to pop in your bag. Solar Buddies have also been designed with a chunky handle to make it easy for any hand to grip— kids and adults alike. This makes a great sun-safe teaching tool to allow your children to understand the importance of protecting their skin. However, always supervise little ones when they apply their own sunscreen to ensure complete coverage. Designed by clever mums, we love how something so simple can be so life-changing, making sunscreen battles a thing of the past! Use special discount code CoastKids15 for a cheeky discount on their website. solarbuddiesaustralia.com.au

I had my daughter’s 7th birthday here. All the children had such a great time. The venue is amazing. I would definitely recommend this venue for anyone thinking of hiring for their child’s birthday party here. It’s such an awesome venue.

I booked my son’s 3rd birthday here! It was absolutely awesome. The kids had so much fun! It was excellent value for money, great service, great food and a very clean facility – I would definitely recommend it to others.

We had a joint birthday here for two of my children yesterday. Over 30 kids were in attendance and the kids absolutely loved the centre. After two hours, we had lunch in the hall. The catering was professional, and the pizza was YUM! Great venue for big events!

TAKING THE DISTANCE

out of distance education

As the virtual world increasingly becomes a part of our everyday lives, it is worth considering how this technology can benefit education models? We chat with Jeff Davis, Executive Head of College, and Danni Foster-Brown, Head of the Virtual Learning Community at Hillcrest Christian College, which launched a Virtual Learning program in 2023, to learn more about how it works and its benefits to students. WHAT IS VIRTUAL LEARNING? Hillcrest’s Virtual Learning Community (VLC) is an evolution of traditional distance education. While we have maintained the benefits of distance learning—your family controls how, when and where your child will complete their schooling—our VLC incorporates the best aspects of a world-class Hillcrest Christian College education. Our fresh approach to virtual learning meant Hillcrest was recognised as one of The Educator’s 5-Star Innovative Schools in 2023, which we are thrilled about! HOW DOES IT WORK? The VLC offers 1:1 teacher interaction and K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

connection each day. The misconception is that it’s done through packs or students are left unsupported to ‘find their way.’. But this is not the case at all! Students are fully supported while being flexible. This means the timetable is flexible but includes interaction and check-in daily with a teacher for wellbeing and progress. This works well if students have sports or other commitments. We also offer a Life Group where a variety of students of similar ages connect as a group with a teacher to share and build skills.

Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The College aims to provide offerings to enable students to choose their desired pathway and offers an extensive range of choices. This flexibility fosters personal interests and strengths and, combined with staff support, provides the necessary road map to drive students towards their future goals - whether they are headed for further education, training, an apprenticeship, or the workforce. Our goal is to help students find a pathway to success in a way that is meaningful to them.

IS IT TAILORED FOR INDIVIDUALS? Every student in the VLC has their own story, and as such, each student has an Individual Learning Plan. Whether students need consolidation of foundational knowledge, adjustments to their learning program due to diagnosed needs, acceleration and expansion of content due to giftedness, or short-term modifications due to personal circumstances, VLC teachers work with each family to develop a plan that puts each child at the centre of their learning journey.

WHAT ABOUT PASTORAL CARE AND SOCIALISING? With full access to our College counsellors, chaplaincy team and wellbeing hub, the VLC goes beyond academics to provide an educational experience supporting the whole child. The daily online Life Group provides teachers and students with a regular touchpoint to focus on wellbeing, social-emotional skill development, relationship-building and service opportunities. Students who live close to campus can also access the College’s co-curricular activities, such as choirs, clubs, interschool sport and carnivals. The VLC also provides regular social events and enrichment days to build community amongst online students and families.

WHAT PATHWAYS ARE OFFERED? All students study and follow the Australian Curriculum in Years 9 and 10. In Years 11 and 12, all students learn from a wide range of Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), General and Applied subjects and courses that count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and, if chosen, an Australian

SWIM

Learning to swim

AS VITAL AS ABC Wondering whether you really need to put your child through swimming lessons to learn to swim? We chat to Cameron Speechley, Director of Swim School at Rackley Swimming, to find out why learning to swim is such a critical part of childhood. WHY ARE SWIM LESSONS SO IMPORTANT? Young or old, Aussies share a love for the water. Despite this, developing swimming skills is something we all need to work on from a young age. Swimming is about so much more than laps and solitary sessions. It is about social interaction, swim races, safety skills, leisure, pool parties, and even the odd bomb dive. And, yes, if you want to represent your school, club or country—a few intensive training sessions might be a good idea too! We believe swimming is a rite of passage for all Australians and an activity anyone can do—even babies. That is why we offer free Baby Splash lessons to help introduce our youngest family members to the water. AT WHAT AGE SHOULD KIDS START SWIMMING LESSONS? The process of learning to swim can start from a baby’s very first bath. The bath helps

22 A U T U M N 2024

them to become accustomed to the feeling of water. We believe children should begin swimming lessons from two months old, teaching them water confidence, which is the foundation for developing strong water safety skills. All kids learn at different rates, and progress often depends on the exposure a child has to various aquatic environments. Swim Australia recommends that children should be able to swim 400 metres continuously before ceasing swimming lessons. While we support Swim Australia’s recommendations, we also recommend that children should continue in swimming lessons until they can swim 1km, as this gives them the endurance they need to cope with a rip at the beach. Swimming is more than a pastime; it’s one of the few activities that can save a child’s life! WHY SHOULD KIDS CONTINUE SWIM LESSONS THROUGH WINTER? Year-round swimming is vital. Continuing lessons across the year helps children build confidence and improve upon their skill level. Children who stop swimming lessons during winter will often experience skill stagnation or ‘winter regression’, and their skills can take time to recover when they do return to the pool. Also, swimming lessons are an integral part of the weekly family routine. Children look forward to interacting with their classmates

and teachers each week. We have seen many families excited and eager to return to the pool after our recent closures to get their children back to a sense of normalcy and routine. WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL WATER SAFET Y SKILLS THAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW AND BY WHAT AGE? A large part of our program focuses on educating kids about water safety in and around the water, as well as the mechanics of learning to swim. This includes teaching them to only go swimming with an adult and with their togs on. Parents have an active role to play, too, ensuring they continue to teach water safety at home. This is followed up with basic reach and throw rescues and encouraging people to ‘Yell and Tell’ rather than jumping in the water to help someone. Water safety in Australia also needs to acknowledge the many aquatic environments we have (such as oceans, pools, creeks and dams). Developing water safety skills and knowing what to do in a dangerous situation in and around water is key to preventing drowning. The older your kids become, the more important this water safety messaging is. As they grow up, they start to head into more dangerous situations, so they need to know how to keep themselves safe. World-class child care centre opening in the heart of the Gold Coast!

Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure: world-class centre opening soon A UNIQUELY COLLABORATIVE APPROACH

Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure is excited to announce the opening of its brand new child care centre on the Gold Coast. Known as Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct, the centre will cater for children from six weeks to five years, providing a fully inclusive and accessible space with a worldclass design that prioritises every child's unique needs and abilities. Positioned in the bustling hub of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, the newest centre is conveniently located close to the G:link tram, public transport and in walking distance to Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Gold Coast Private Hospital and the Smith Collective. Only streets away from Smith Street, the centre is perfectly positioned for families using this arterial on their daily commute to and from work.

WIDE, OPEN OUTDOOR SPACES

We love the feel of our natural environment and have carefully curated our playscapes with native plants, boulders and wellestablished trees—bringing the feel of the hinterland into the centre. The design of our wide and open verandas was created as a connector to this green space, allowing our children to feel a part of nature while being inside. The building design incorporates universal access throughout the entire space which provides a smooth and seamless surface, inspired by our collaboration with LMS Architects from the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley, USA. Teaming with Wearthy for the playground build, we have incorporated local Indigenous culture, sustainability and accessibility, creating a haven for adventures and wild imaginations.

Years in the making, Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct has seen collaboration from various industries and specialist agencies/ organisations, including Economic Development Queensland and Griffith University and Cody QJ Goldberg, Founder and Executive Director of US-based organisation Harpers Playground, to truly make this centre one of a kind: to deliver a best-in-class service that is fit for purpose; for all children. This collaboration has helped us design a space that is not only beautiful but functional. Our ongoing commitment to inclusion

EVERYTHING IS INCLUDED

is evident in every corner, ensuring a welcoming environment for all. From built-in quiet zones to a sensoryfriendly colour palette and wideopen spaces for movement and manoeuvrability—we have carefully crafted our indoor and outdoor spaces to cater to the diverse needs of all children in our care.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE

To enhance the quality of our services, we have proudly partnered with Griffith University and Autism Queensland. These partnerships will provide ongoing support and guidance to our dedicated team and the families

we serve, working together with our families and their teams. With a focus on early intervention, our goal is to support mainstream schooling outcomes, empower children with life skills, and foster an environment of acceptance and non-biased attitudes. With the future generations of Australia attending our centre, positive change within our systems, structures and communities needs to start here.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

At Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, we believe that all children are capable and competent. Our philosophy guides our curriculum in a way that enhances independence in life skills from a young age. We set the foundations for learning and create opportunities to build self-worth and confidence within a safe and secure environment by positioning each child’s perspective as a valid and meaningful way to drive decisionmaking in all that we do. We value what matters to our children and listen with intent—this is shown in how we wrap the curriculum around our children’s ideas, thinking and perspectives.

When we say everything is included, we certainly mean it. No having to pay extra for food, incursions, excursions or activities— our daily fee has it all covered. We have two exceptional on-site chefs who prepare daily fresh and nutritious food for our children from our seasonally approved menu, provided to us by our Paediatric Nutritionist. Our adventures out into our community and bringing our community into the centre for music, sport, yoga and dance with our children are all part of our curriculum. Our promise is that no child ever misses out. We also provide a hat, shirt, and drink bottle as part of your enrolment with us. Don’t worry about nap time sheets; we have those covered too! Rest assured, education and care at Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct will be nothing short of an adventure for your child. Our world-class facility, combined with our child-centred focus and philosophy and our ongoing commitment to continuous learning and development of our team, will ensure your early learning adventure is the best delivered on the Gold Coast. Enrolment applications will open in March. If this sounds like an opportunity you do not want to miss out on, scan the QR code below to join our mailing list for more information on joining our Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct family. TANGALOOMA RESORT, MORETON ISL AND Hand-feed a dolphin, try sand boarding or quad biking, snorkel a wreck or experience the majestic whale migration from June to October. Yep, Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island is an adventure paradise for families, all within easy reach of Brisbane. Jump on the ferry at Pinkenba (you can leave your car at the terminal), and a smooth 75-minute catamaran over to Moreton Island is all it takes. There’s plenty to do at Tangalooma to justify staying at the resort for a few nights. Wild dolphin feeding at dusk is a must-do. The quad bikes are super fun (little kids can ride on the back), the snorkelling is fantastic, and it’s a beautiful place to enjoy together.

THUNDERBIRD PARK & CEDAR CREEK LODGES Thunderbird Park is chock-full of things the kids (and you!) may never have done before, and it’s all nestled in the beautiful rainforest of Tamborine Mountain. DigIT is the latest adventure drawcard at Thunderbird Park, Australia’s first mini excavator park! Prepare yourself for real excavator machinery and construction-inspired activities where the kids are IN the driver’s seat! Also popular is the TreeTop Challenge, which has a gentle kids’ course and an Adventure Park high ropes course. Experience adrenaline-pumping action as well as rainforest views as you fly amongst the treetops of Tamborine Mountain. There is also the Thunderegg Crystal Mine, where you can fossick for your own hidden treasures from prehistoric volcanic lava, bird feeding, mini golf, and laser skirmish in the rainforest. Stay at Cedar Creek Lodges, which adjoins Thunderbird Park, for the ultimate rainforest experience, with a wonderful range of camping, glamping and self-contained lodges. cedarcreeklodges.com.au thunderbirdpark.com

HERON ISL AND This is a longer drive, but the extra few hours on the Bruce Highway are so worth it when you reach the unique and magical marine environment of Heron Island. Drive to Gladstone and catch the ferry for a truly magical few days immersed in the Great Barrier Reef. Because you access the reef straight off the beach, this is the ideal reef destination for those with little kids. There are no day

trips by boat, nothing to book—just step out of your cabin and into the water. The island is tiny, and everything is accessed on foot, so it’s safe for kids to explore. There are plenty of eco-activities, such as bird-watching walks and marine biology talks. But the highlight is visiting during turtle nesting season (November to March) when baby turtles hatch from the dunes and run to the ocean nightly. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. BIG4 ADVENTURES IN 24!

Glamping, splashing and luxe galore With new deluxe cabins, glamping tents, an eco-sustainable playground, AND a dog-friendly environment, there are even more reasons to visit BIG4 Gold Coast in 2024.

B

IG4 Gold Coast has long been a favourite destination for families due to its perfect blend of entertainment, affordability and comfort. The water park is next level, and the fact it is dog friendly and you can self-cater (or not!) means it ticks boxes for every family member. Yet, always looking for ways to improve even more, this inventive park has added some exciting features over recent months that families will love.

NEW CABINS

The deluxe cabins have been incredibly popular over recent years, so new for 2024 are eight new deluxe cabins in the Oasis area. The Oasis cabins are all grouped near the water park, with a tranquil garden area in the centre to give it an added sense of zen. “We've got eight new Oasis cabins, four of

34

which are three-bedroom deluxe retreats and four of which are two-bedroom family deluxe cabins, one of which is an accessible cabin,” says Candy Workman, Sales and Business Development Manager at Gold Coast Holiday Park. “These are a bit more upmarket from our previous cabins, with more modern decor, brass fittings in the kitchen and bathroom areas and just a little more luxury.” The new cabins are comfortable and spacious, with everything you need, including a washing machine and a full kitchen. The three-bedroom cabins fit up to 10 people, and the family cabins fit up to six.

NEW SAFARI TENTS

The most exciting addition for 2024 is the opening of the two new Safari tents in

January. Fitting up to six people, each tent has a four-poster bed, a bunk bed, two single beds in a nook, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a living/dining space. There is also a gorgeous veranda with a sunken lounge and a clawfoot bathtub. Both tents overlook the saltwater creek. “We are really excited about the safari tents, offering that camping experience with a lot of luxury and with the beautiful view of the water,” says Candy.

ECO-SUSTAINABLE PL AYGROUND

The eco-sustainable playground opened in 2023 and is rapidly becoming a hugely popular feature of the holiday park. Made from recycled materials, such as ocean waste, plastics and textiles, with low carbon aluminium, which is produced by renewable energy such as water, wind and solar, it is designed to motivate children to play, learn how to move, improve balance, and socialise with other kids. ACCESSIBILIT Y

“It’s such a great place where the kids can go and have fun,” says Candy. “There are several seating areas, so the parents can relax and enjoy a coffee, and it's right next to the basketball courts where the older kids can go and play games. The dog park's right there as well, so the dogs can also have a run around, so the whole family can go down the back and enjoy themselves.”

DOG FRIENDLY SPACES

With 32 acres of space, two dedicated offleash dog parks, plenty of dog-friendly campsites and 20 dog-friendly cabins, Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is the perfect destination for families with fur babies. Along with the dedicated off-leash areas within the park, there are several off-leash areas to enjoy locally, including Spit Beach (a 20-minute drive), Damian Leeding Memorial Park and Nerang’s riverside dog walk (a 10-minute drive). Dogs are also welcome on the terrace at Nibbles, the park’s yummy cafe. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

Ensuring the park is accessible to all is a core focus at BIG4 Gold Coast. Therefore, this inclusive holiday park has plenty of accessible accommodation and facilities, including adding a three-bedroom accessible deluxe cabin to the Oasis area. For accommodation, the accessible motel rooms offer the convenience and comfort of motel accommodation in the heart of a Holiday Park. The accessible family deluxe cabin is the perfect choice for a more extended stay with all the comforts of home. The park also has an accessible two-bedroom terrace close to the waterpark. The impressive waterpark is accessible right up to the splash pad, so kids of all abilities can experience the thrill of a waterpark.

A HUGE WATER PARK

With over 300 metres of slides to enjoy, BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is the perfect place to spend an hour or the whole day of water play. Parents can look on from the comfort of one of the poolside cabanas or get in and try out the super-slides and interactive play features, including: • A multi-lane body slide • 4 x aqua tube slides • 1 x compact slide • The tipping bucket of all tipping buckets • A combined total of 317m of water slide! BIG4 Gold Coast Water Park is the tallest play structure in any Holiday Park across the southern hemisphere and can be zoned into smaller play areas to suit kids of all ages. -----goldcoastholidaypark.com.au 66-86 Siganto Drive, Helensvale QLD 4212 stay@gcpark.com.au 07 5514 4400 A U T U M N 2024

Thanks to the half-price valet parking included in the Family Package, arrival and check-in were a breeze. And it wasn’t long before we were in our rooms testing out the fluffiness of the robes and slippers. Both passed with flying colours. We had two adjoining rooms, so the kids had their room connected to ours with an internal door. This arrangement gave us plenty of space while also keeping us together. The teepee with toys and books in the kids’ room was a lovely addition, and the kids spent several hours reading and playing while we put our feet up with an in-room

coffee. They also thoroughly enjoyed filling out the Westin Family Travel Journal. This thoughtful free activity book is filled with engaging activities for kids and has plenty of pages for kids to jot down their adventures. FAMILY FRIENDLY DINING Breakfast was the most impressive spread of pastries, hot food and continental options served in Settimo. Settimo is the hotel’s incredible restaurant by celebrated chef Guy Grossi. This Amalfi Coast-inspired dining experience was impeccable and a must-do for dinner. Also available at The Westin is the Charles’ Bar. This relaxed bar/lounge is open all day, where you can get lunch, dinner and snacks. With a casual feel and fabulous menu, we loved every moment there. Even if you aren't staying at the Westin, you can still head into the Charles' Bar for a scrumptious breakfast with your pooch. From 7 am - 1 pm daily, this aviation-inspired cafe and jazz bar serves up a special chef-created doggie Pup-Fast Breakfast. This is the only restaurant in Brisbane where your pooch is treated to a human-like dining experience. EXTRA THINGS One thing the Westin is renowned for is the Nautilus Pool, home to Brisbane’s only swim-up bar, which we felt obliged to check out and can report back that it is as fabulous as it sounds! Though this sounds tailored to

MARRIOTT.COM grown-ups, the pool is 100% kid-friendly! With a well-designed overhang, the pool is also semi-shaded while still being outdoors. This meant we could stay for hours, and the kids could play without worrying about the sun. There were inflatables for the kids, too. The Westin Club Lounge was another excellent addition to a family stay at The Westin Brisbane. This exclusive lounge offers complimentary breakfast, evening drinks and canapés, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. It is quieter and feels private but is also kid-friendly. The most heavenly part of our stay was the signature massage at Heavenly® Spa! All in all, The Westin was a fabulous balance of luxury, amazing food, and familyfriendly services. The staff went out of their way to make the kids feel welcome and cared for, and we can't wait to return!

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE WESTIN FAMILY PACKAGE

• Complimentary breakfast for two adults and two children (12 years and below) in Settimo by celebrated Australian Italian chef, Guy Grossi. • In-room teepee for kids • Westin Family Travel Journal • 2nd room can be booked at 25% discount to 1st room • 50% off valet parking

LOCAL LIFE

Eat at

EATS

On the surface, EATS looks like many other bustling restaurants— delivering delicious, wholesome food for the local community. But this inspiring eatery also has something else cooking in the background: a visionary social enterprise changing lives for disadvantaged kids in Peru. We chat with Gustavo to find out more. WHAT LED YOU TO SET UP EATS AS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE? My business partner and I, Katie Johnston, met salsa dancing; we connected over our shared values of business and wanting to make the world a better place. She has been struggling with making her social enterprise in Nepal work, and I have been frustrated with the cutthroat nature of the hospitality sector. The name EATS (Empowering All Through Support) came from that desire to help and create change. Through EATS, we are training and mentoring youth in Peru, providing education resources and microfinancing small business projects - it is the full circle of support for people who are more than capable but just miss guidance, confidence and resources.

40

A U T U M N 2024

WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO PERU? I grew up in a really poor area with no hope of even getting a basic job. I had no education, no skills, and not even shoes to go to school. I had to share an outfit with my brother if we wanted to go play with friends, while the other one stayed at home in underwear. My strongest memories as a child were meeting people who had walked my path and seeing them become successful. Having hope is everything because where there is hope, there are possibilities; where there are possibilities, there are actions that make dreams come true. HOW DO YOU HELP GIVE KIDS A BETTER FUTURE? We work with people in remote Peru who don't have access to anything. First, we are helping the kids with warm clothing and blankets, insulating homes and building greenhouses. Then, a lot of the work is bringing educational resources (pens, paper, books) and mentoring the young people. Introducing them to the modern world and training them in basic life and money skills right up to hospitality management is essential for them to access employment. We teach English, too, as we want to open up pathways for participants to come to Australia.

AND EATS IS GROWING! Recently, we opened a store in Carindale, Westfield, that has really seen us expand - we are striking what is a really difficult balance between scaling up and helping as many people as we can, but with the help of Mirvac and Westfield, we are making it happen! We are opening in Kawana soon (end of April), so follow us on social media for the launch date and come along to show your support: @eats.1989 YOU’VE INTRODUCED A ‘KIDS EAT FREE’ DEAL TOO! Yes! Every Sunday, one adult meal off the allday breakfast or all-day lunch menu qualifies you for one meal off the kid's menu at no additional cost. We wanted more people to come into the restaurant on a Sunday, we see it as a locals day - so it gives people a mellow and relaxed child-friendly option. Plus, at the same time, we can hopefully increase our sales so we can help even more. The more we can grow, the more we can give to others.
