WELCOME

W

ell, another Christmas/summer/ end of school/fall in a heap time is already here. How are you all holding up? Each year, I say I’ll be more organised. And each year, I’m always the one on December 1st muttering to myself: ‘How is it the end of the year?’, ‘I must go to the Plaza,’ ‘School presentations, whaaat now?!’ Yep, it’s a busy time for everything, and we are the glue that holds it all together. We make sure the formal uniform is clean, the kindy teacher gifts are done, cards are sent, stockings are filled, work deadlines are met, carols are sung, and Christmas day is magical… so let’s take a moment to appreciate the pure superhuman powers of mums and dads at this time of year. Because it’s hard raising little people, and it’s been exceptionally hard over the last few years. Recently, over a long-overdue margarita with a friend, she reminded me about ‘good enough parenting’.

The idea comes from British paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, and it’s been my go-to philosophy throughout this crazy parenting journey. Winnicott’s research found that parents don’t need to be constantly attentive to their children. In fact, Winnicott found that even if we could be completely attuned to our baby’s every need, at every moment, this would not support their healthy development. Good enough parenting is not at all about compromising your baby’s wellbeing. Good enough parenting is actually great parenting. And it means that, as a parent, you are there to support them but not to do everything. You can still have time for yourself. To drink your coffee whilst it’s hot. To take a shower. To forget things. To be imperfect. To do what you need for your own wellbeing. And that helps our kids, too! Over time, these experiences help our children to develop the resilience they need to live in the imperfect, real world. I’ve never been remotely perfect. I swear too much, I love a cold beer, my kids eat sugar, McDonald’s IS a treat, and I regularly forget to walk the dog. But we must all remind ourselves, especially at this time of year, that good enough IS good enough! You are doing an amazing job; have a merry Christmas and a ‘good enough’ summer!

Alison has been teaching Japanese in a variety of settings for 28 years. “Rarely have I taught the same thing twice in the same way! My learners are constantly changing and adapting to a world that keeps presenting us with new challenges. Through all these changes, one constant in teaching remains—if learning experiences are interesting and authentic, students are far more likely to engage with them and enjoy success.” Mountain Creek State School Japanese teacher Katrina Dwan has also applied for the grant, to spend five to six weeks in Japan to study the Japanese language and culture. She plans to visit historical places and schools, and experience the latest and greatest trends in Japan.

he Queensland Program for Japanese Education was established with an endowment from The Tokyo Foundation to promote Japanese language education in Queensland and the Northern Territory. A significant component of this program is an annual offer of study grants to enable practising Japanese language teachers to visit Japan to further enhance their Japanese language skills and understanding of teaching methodology and to deepen their knowledge of Japan. “My experience in Japan will help me to incorporate cultural aspects into my lessons, making them more authentic and meaningful,” says Alison. “I think that this program will also enhance my cultural sensitivity, and then I can incorporate that attitude into my

‘SLIP SLOP SL AP’ TEACHING SELF-WORTH through swimming

We all know that learning to swim is critical and something all kids must do. However, one Coolum swim school sees these lessons as far more than simply honing young swimmers. With nearly four decades of experience in the aquatic industry, Chris Spencer, owner of awardwinning Swim 1 Coolum Beach, has designed her swim program to also build self-respect and confidence in each child who walks through her doors. “The reasons for swim lessons are multi-dimensional. Swim 1 isn’t just about teaching kids to swim. It’s about empowering them with lifelong skills, fostering confidence, and encouraging a deep appreciation for the aquatic world,” says Chris. “The heart of Swim 1’s philosophy is to create a solid foundation for children that promotes and instils self-worth, sound values and confidence in every child,” says Chris.

from learn-to-swim classes for infants as young as six months to squad development levels, adult lessons, and stroke correction. “We’re passionate and professional about what we deliver here. Even after 40 years, I never get tired of seeing how the kids’ smiles light up when skills are achieved in the water,” says Chris. Swim 1 teaches in a 15-metre indoor heated pool with an environmentally friendly magnesium mineral salt system and ozone, providing numerous health benefits, including stress relief, detoxification, and muscle rejuvenation.

As we come into summer, sunscreen battles become a daily fixture in many households. We all want to get outside as quickly as possible, but applying the necessary sunscreen to wriggling little people is exasperating! Solar Buddies was born out of this precise frustration and has now been brought to life in Australia by Sunshine Coast mums Zara and Jess. This ingenious award-winning refillable sunscreen applicator is unique because of its sponge and roller-ball partnership. The roller-ball dispenses and the sponge glides the sunscreen across the skin. This means that you never have to touch the sunscreen as the sponge does the work of your hands. It’s also better for the planet, as you can buy a giant sunscreen of your choice and simply fill up your Solar Buddies as and when you need it. It holds 100ml, so it is the perfect size to pop in your bag. Solar Buddies have also been designed with a chunky handle to make it easy for any hand to grip— kids and adults alike. This makes a great sun-safe teaching tool to allow your children to understand the importance of protecting their skin. However, always supervise little ones when they apply their own sunscreen to ensure complete coverage. Designed by clever mums, we love how something so simple can be so life-changing, making sunscreen battles a thing of the past! Use special discount code CoastKids15 for a cheeky discount on their website. solarbuddiesaustralia.com.au

STORMS

ild weather is part of living on the Sunshine Coast. Every summer we experience many types of disasters including bushfires, heatwaves, flooding and cyclones. For the younger members of your family, extreme weather events and their impacts like, blackouts and flooding, can be very frightening. For many it may be the first time they’ve experienced wild weather. Babies and children have a limited understanding of what’s happening around them. But being prepared before a weather emergency can make a big difference to how they will respond and cope. Get Ready Queensland recommends your

first step is to have an open discussion about disaster risk with your family and let them help with preparation activities such as: • Cleaning up the yard • Completing your emergency plan • Shopping for emergency kit items • Packing your emergency kit and evacuation kit • Practising your evacuation plan • Checking weather reports • Looking after household pet There are a few simple steps you can take to get your family wild weather ready. 1. A PLACE TO REWILD YOUR CHILD Una Early Learning has opened its doors in Sippy Downs, where a little wild does a lot of good.

grass, each interaction with nature brings a bounty of physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits and grows a better future for us all.”

ith its philosophy grounded in embracing nature and holistic wellbeing, Una Early Learning burst onto the Queensland early learning scene in 2023. Its two centres in Sippy Downs are already buzzing with curious little minds, and a third centre is in the pipeline for 2024 in Forest Glen. But what is the philosophy behind rewilding, and what does that look like in a childcare setting? Rewilding is a concept that encourages people to slow down, immerse themselves in nature and understand the world around them. “At Una, it’s the natural world that ignites our imaginations because, to care for nature we must first understand it,” says Una Early Learning Operations Manager Talisha Long. “Whether it’s getting immersed in bush kindy, tending to the animals who call our centres home, or playing barefoot on the

Children develop critical thinking skills and cultivate the confidence to trust themselves through experiencing autonomy in a safe environment. “We encourage children to find their own rhythm for life,” says Talisha. “Through natural experiences, we empower them to follow where their curiosity leads them, pursue play their way, and step into their independence.”

HEALTHY LIVING

Healthy habits are instilled from the moment our kids are born. “Our bodies are our forever homes, which is why our programs are designed to inspire lifelong care and appreciation for holistic health,” says Talisha. “We keep tummies satisfied with nourishing foods that little ones love, fueling their energy and showing them how delicious and nutritious food can be.”

EMBRACING DIVERSIT Y

Through embracing diversity, children grow up with the innate belief that they, and all people, belong. “From encouraging children to share their interests with their peers to motivating our educators to bring their passions into their teaching rooms, ours is a place where curious minds delight in stories different to their own. It’s a place where differences are celebrated.”

CHOOSE FUN

Whichever form it takes, fun invites participation and helps us connect with one another. It melts away fear and bolsters confidence. “Every day, we choose roaring laughter and a good dose of silliness!” says Talisha. “Sometimes, we choose the fun of splishsplashing in puddles or monkeying across the playscape. Fun can mean getting messy or embracing risky play alongside those sharing your excitement.” “Here, we know that a little wild does a lot of good. And that’s why we choose fun, always.”

With contemporary rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows and the trademark Westin Heavenly® Beds, this five-star luxury hotel also goes out of its way to welcome and provide for families. Thanks to the half-price valet parking included in the Family Package, arrival and check-in were a breeze. And it wasn’t long before we were in our rooms testing out the fluffiness of the robes and slippers. Both passed with flying colours. We had two adjoining rooms, so the kids had their room connected to ours with an internal door. This arrangement gave us plenty of space while also keeping us together. The teepee with toys and books in the kids’ room was a lovely addition, and the kids spent several hours reading and playing while we put our feet up with an in-room

This thoughtful free activity book is filled with engaging activities for kids and has plenty of pages for kids to jot down their adventures. FAMILY FRIENDLY DINING Breakfast was the most impressive spread of pastries, hot food and continental options served in Settimo. EXTRA THINGS One thing the Westin is renowned for is the Nautilus Pool, home to Brisbane’s only swim-up bar, which we felt obliged to check out and can report back that it is as fabulous as it sounds! Though this sounds tailored to

MARRIOTT.COM grown-ups, the pool is 100% kid-friendly! With a well-designed overhang, the pool is also semi-shaded while still being outdoors. This meant we could stay for hours, and the kids could play without worrying about the sun. There were inflatables for the kids, too. The Westin Club Lounge was another excellent addition to a family stay at The Westin Brisbane. This exclusive lounge offers complimentary breakfast, evening drinks and canapés, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. It is quieter and feels private but is also kid-friendly. The most heavenly part of our stay was the signature massage at Heavenly® Spa! All in all, The Westin was a fabulous balance of luxury, amazing food, and familyfriendly services. The staff went out of their way to make the kids feel welcome and cared for, and we can't wait to return!

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE WESTIN FAMILY PACKAGE

A

s we wrap up another year, the cost-of-living crisis continues to loom over every household, with families on an ever-constant search for ways to cut down expenses. The Happy Pops Story W TION • DE NA S TI

ATION • DE S TIN

Mooloolaba Special

hen Augusta Puttkammer and her husband Ian opened Happy Pops on Hastings Street, Noosa, five years ago, little did the Sunshine Coast community know what a treat they were in for. Five years later and with three more stores under their belts, this dynamic dessert duo are renowned across the region for producing those fabulous pops of happiness on a stick. We chat with Augusta to uncover the sweet secrets behind Happy Pops’ success!

WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND? I’m a chef by trade, and I’ve spent several years in food product development. My husband has a business background. So, when we set our sights on Noosa for that enviable lifestyle, like many others, we had a shared desire to start our own business. He had dreamt of doing something around ice cream for a long time, and I the same with desserts. Our journey began with experimenting with flavour combinations and creating recipes, which is my passion. This gradually evolved into the unique concept of Happy Pops!

TION • DE NA S TI

FOR THOSE YET TO EXPERIENCE A HAPPY POP, WHAT IS IT? We offer all-natural handcrafted artisanal gelato and sorbet pops on a stick, which you build to your choosing. First, choose your naked pop flavour—such as vanilla, vegan hazelnut gelato & mango sorbet, strawberries & cream (flavours can vary from month to month). Then, you choose your chocolate sauce, which is drizzled over the top. And then choose your toppings! If that’s too many decisions to make, we also offer premium pops that have been predecorated by our in-house pastry chef. WHAT’S THE SECRET BEHIND THE POPUL ARIT Y OF HAPPY POPS? Customers buy it the first time because they look beautiful. When you walk into the shop and see them all lined up in the cabinet, it’s just so striking. And the experience is so fun.

44

S U M M E R 2023

But then they come back for the flavour; you’ve got to follow through with the flavour and the experience—that’s what customers come back for. When they bite into it, their face lights up, and they think, ‘This is amazing!’. That’s the magical moment. THE POPS ARE NOT ONLY DELICIOUS BUT ALL-NATURAL TOO! IS THAT WHAT DRIVES YOUR INGREDIENT CHOICES? Yes, that’s what we are all about—the pops are handmade and all-natural colours and flavours. For example, our recent bubblegum limited edition was coloured bright blue using natural butterfly pea powder. We want to ensure that everything you give to your kids and family is as all-natural as possible. AND YOU NOW HAVE FOUR STORES! Yes, we have four shops now. Noosa was the first; we opened South Bank (Brisbane) a year later. Then we did Eumundi in early 2022 and Mooloolaba in November 2022. YOU ARE ALSO DOING THE SUPERHUMAN TASK OF JUGGLING A BUSINESS AND PARENTING! HOW DO YOU DO IT? Yes, we have an eight-year-old and a twoyear-old. The baby is only in daycare for two days a week, so the juggling is intense but fun! WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? The first five years of Happy Pops have been incredible, and we primarily want to continue with what we are doing! We hope to open another store next year, but only if and when we are ready. We are a 100% familyrun business, so we go at a pace we can manage without compromising our quality and service. HAPPYPOPS.COM.AU

A new era

OF LEARNING AT SUNCOAST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

I

n 2021, Suncoast Christian College announced its move towards a more collaborative teaching style. Fast forward to September 2023, and the innovative college has unveiled its new world-class primary campus building, marking a new era of learning at the college. “The school has always had an interest in contemporary approaches to learning and seeking ways to best meet the extraordinary diversity of interests, needs, and abilities of

the children in the classroom,” says Suncoast Christian College Principal Greg Mattiske. “So, when we began thinking about how the next 40 years would look, we started envisioning how we would like learning to be at Suncoast.” Over several years, the team visited other schools—in Australia and overseas— thinking and dreaming of what was possible, and it has all culminated in this state-of-theart project.

WHAT’S IN THE NEW BUILDING AT SUNCOAST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE?

The new campus will offer the most advanced facilities on the Sunshine Coast, replacing classrooms with flexible spaces designed to support the school’s ‘teamteaching’ pedagogy. With an approach focused on stage rather than age, the new layout will provide collaborative environments where the school’s team of dedicated Christian teachers will provide the best in contemporary education. The classrooms feature a range of functional design features, such as bleachers, breakout rooms, and curtain and acoustic treatments throughout to facilitate a wide variety of learning modes. These features allow teachers to modify and tailor lessons to individual student’s specific abilities and needs and varying group sizes. Teachers and teacher’s assistants will work together over two levels with students in “We are facilitating groups of five up to 75 in Years the best social, 1 through 6. “It’s easy for children emotional, and and staff to move through academic outcomes spaces. You aren’t fixed in one for our pupils.” classroom. Depending on the learning you’re going to do, you’re going to move to a zone, a learning space designed for different learning. For example, there’s a kitchen in each zone, and there’s also a maker space, which is for those STEM-type learning subjects,” says Mr Mattiske. Heralded as a game-changer in educational design, the new building has been brought to life by renowned architects m3 Architecture, who are known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to intuitive buildings and modern design. “By providing teachers with a collaborative, modern space that allows them to cater to a wide range of student needs, K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

the College’s ‘stage-based learning’ approach. “Stage-based learning is where we can group teachers into teams of stages. A stage is two years levels. Year one and two teachers are stage one, for example. Then children learn in small groups, working at their ability level.” This allows children to be accelerated if needed, and those who need more support can have that support and be working at a level appropriate to take them forward. These groups change depending on the focus—literacy, numeracy, and science. we are facilitating the best social, emotional, and academic outcomes for our pupils,” says Mr Mattiske.

INSTILLING A SENSE OF BELONGING

To ensure students still have a solid understanding of belonging, all students have a homeroom of course for familiarity. “Familiarity and belonging is still fundamental here at Suncoast,” says Mr Mattiske. “Students still have a specific teacher that they connect with daily. But when they do literacy and numeracy, they may go to a different group of children with similar abilities. And then come back together with their home class.”

WHAT IS ‘TEAM TEACHING’?

Team teaching is at the core of Suncoast’s learning pedagogy or framework. “Teaching is such an interesting, complex, and rich job. Nowadays, it is too much for one teacher to be expected to meet all those needs. I’m certain that the needs of children are best met by a team of people working together as a unit,” says Mr Mattiske. Team teaching works hand-in-hand with

RAISING INDEPENDENT LEARNERS

One of the key goals of this shift to stagebased learning is to create independent learners. “We know that children need a lot of support. And we provide that. But we also want our kids to graduate from Suncoast ready to be lifelong learners in the truest sense and to have that love of learning,” says Mr Mattiske. “Learning’s not always easy; it’s a challenge. You get stuck, and there are things to overcome. We want the kids to have the tools and the confidence to give it a go. “We are already seeing that growth of independence as learners and resilience, which is feeding through into our secondary. You look at the capability Suncoast graduates have today and their aspirations. It’s inspiring,” says Mr Mattiske. “Now it is up to our wonderful educators to harness the building’s full potential for the benefit of every student.” SUNCOASTCC.QLD.EDU.AU

3. BENTO BOX

Prep for Prep:

The b.box bento box is top of our favourites list for 2024.

4 lunchbox essentials for back-to-school

O

ne of the more significant adjustments that kids (and parents!) need to make for the start of Prep is the shift from the provided meals at childcare to the new world of daily lunchboxes. How do you prepare a nutritious lunchbox... Every. Single. Day.?! Lunchbox expert Jodie Topsfield from Coastal Kidswear, who specialises in lunchbox solutions for kids, explains that the key to success is to keep things interesting and unique to them. “Half the battle with getting kids to eat and drink healthily is to make food fun!” Jodie says. “If it is presented in small portions of different colours and textures that they can explore, it is more likely to hold their interest.” Though that sounds like a tough task to do every day, with a few little tools, the daily lunchbox doesn’t have to be a grind. Here are Jodie’s four must-have items for lunchbox success.

This nifty tool quickly cuts a regular sandwich into several fun-shaped pieces. These little sandwich parcels are easy to pick up and look great in a bento box section, instantly making food fun! Sandwich cutters also work for toast, pancakes, watermelon, ham, cheese, fairy bread … whatever you can find!

1. SANDWICH CUTTERS

Of course, a cooler bag is essential if your beautifully packed lunch is going to stay fresh all day! The Montico range of cooler bags fit the b.box bento boxes perfectly. These durable cooler bags are machine washable and have a separate pocket for the

An essential in every kitchen with primaryaged kids, the sandwich cutter instantly turns everyday food into something bitesized and fun. “The sandwich cutter is my number one go-to item when packing a kids’ lunchbox,” says Jodie.

56

S U M M E R 2023/24

“b.box has designed a lunchbox that offers parents and kids more flexibility. Made from PP and silicone, the range is durable, flexible and reliable - you know the lunch will arrive safely, no matter how much the schoolbag is tossed around!” Jodie says. The flexible design makes it possible to pack most things in the b.box, whist the leak-proof seals let you store wet foods like watermelon and yoghurts (no liquids). The easy-to-open latch and handle encourage independence in little ones.

2. FUSION WATER BOTTLE

A child’s water bottle is possibly the most used, dropped, lost and found item of the primary years. A good one is a must. And the new Montiico Fusion bottle might be ‘the one’. Built from stainless steel to withstand the rambunctiousness of primary, the doublewall insulation keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and wide mouth design fits ice cubes of all shapes and sizes. Best of all, it is dishwasher safe. It comes in three sections that you can mix and match: base, bumper, and lid.

4. COOLER BAG

self-contained ice pack - included with the bag. No condensation = no soggy food. "These bags are built to withstand the rough and tumble of the primary years, and the thicker insulation is a must in the Australian summer," says Jodie.

FINAL TIP

Most importantly, remember to personalise everything! "It's incredible how often kids forget to pick up water bottles and lunch boxes. If they are personalised with the child's name, you know their favourite lunchbox will return to them. “Even better - get your lunchbox gear from Coastal Kidswear, and they can personalise everything for you! Simply add it at the checkout.”

The secret to AWARD-WINNING TUTORING

Recently recognised as the ‘best tutoring service on the Sunshine Coast’, and a finalist in two prestigious Sunshine Coast Business Awards, what is the secret behind the success of Numberworks’nWords?

T

he Sunshine Coast is brimming with small businesses and women passionate about making a difference in the community. For one incredible businesswoman, 2023 has been a year like no other, with numerous award nominations, impressive business growth and even featuring in an inspirational coffee table book! We were excited to sit down with Rochelle Callard, owner of Numberworks’nWords Sunshine Coast, to find out about her latest award nominations and how she turned her passion for helping children flourish into such a successful Sunshine Coast enterprise.

58

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I have a background in education and was a school principal for several years in the Granite Belt west of Brisbane, and I have also run my own business before. But by 2018, I was looking for a new challenge. My passion for teaching hadn’t waned, but I felt I needed a fresh way to bring learning to life for kids who may be getting lost in the system, and the entrepreneur in me missed the small business world. I came across the NumberWorks’nWords program through a family member, which perfectly combines my business skills, education, and teaching. So, after doing the due diligence, I signed the franchise agreement for Sunshine Coast. I spent the rest of 2018 setting up, ready to open NumberWorks’nWords Sippy Downs in 2019.

AND IN JUST FOUR YEARS, YOU ALREADY HAVE SEVERAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS!

It’s been incredible! From first opening the doors in 2019 and navigating a new business through the pandemic, we now run more than 300 personalised tutoring sessions each week from our centre in Sippy Downs. This year [2023], we won the award for best tutoring service on the Sunshine Coast in the Quality Business Awards. This award was not something we applied for or was told about; it was based on customer ratings, meaning we had a 95% positive rating on three platforms. So that meant a lot to us. I was also a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards earlier this year. The Awards are held annually to recognise the women behind the business on the Sunshine Coast. make a difference in a child’s progress. The NumberWorks‘nWords program is designed to be engaging and structured so that students make far more progress here than with many other methods. All our new students are given a free assessment and introductory lesson, where we identify their specific areas of need. We then tailor a tuition program for each individual, set goals in consultation with parents, and provide regular progress feedback. This personalised and targeted approach bridges the gaps and builds up student confidence and self-belief. I believe the key to a child’s success is building their learning confidence. Many children lack confidence in themselves and their answers, which can really hinder them in the classroom. By building up their confidence and supporting the student to feel safe enough to ask questions, take risks and make mistakes, they will soon begin to flourish. Confidence makes them happier and more engaged, and academic success quickly follows. Helping students turn their learning experiences around is extremely rewarding. There are so many of those ‘light bulb’ moments when students realise they can do it. It’s incredible to be part of that! ith two decades of experience as an English and Inclusive Education teacher, Emma Criss identified a significant need for specialised social and academic support for young people with disability and learning differences. Her response to this need is Affinity Skill Development, a new support service that promises to alleviate the concerns of many overwhelmed parents. We chat with Emma to find out more.

At Affinity, we understand that attending meetings in the school setting for young individuals with disability and learning differences can be incredibly overwhelming for parents and caregivers. That's why our primary aim is to support families in negotiating the school environment and improve the partnership between home and school while working towards positive outcomes for everyone involved. We can attend meetings alongside you to ensure you access the best possible support and help navigate the complex processes in schools; we also provide ongoing support. Our focus remains on creating authentic connections with young people and their families or caregivers.

PEOPLE

Ash is back AT 91.1 HOTFM! We catch up with Sam & Ash from 91.1 HotFM to find out what’s in store for 2024 and Ash’s muchanticipated return to the airwaves.

ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE BACK TOGETHER ON-AIR FOR 2024, AND WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE SHOW?

A: I have loved my time off with the kids and having my second child, Luna. I’m also excited to be back on air with my best mate. I’ve missed Sam, and I’ve missed doing Sam’s work! S: Yes, it’s no secret I have missed Ash terribly (She does all the work). It feels like I have been missing a limb. 2024 is going to be a monster. Ash promises no babies, Sam promises no heart attacks, and they both promise a stack load of unpredictable, spontaneous fun.

WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE FIRST SHOW BACK TOGETHER AGAIN?

A: January 15, the band is back together. I’m a little nervous about the two-kid juggle (three if we’re including Sam), mixed in with a 3:30 a.m. alarm and god knows how many all-nighters I’ll be pulling. It’s a recipe for breakfast radio, right?

“I honestly believe I have the best job in the world! I get to hang out with my best mate, and we talk and have fun each morning!”

64

S U M M E R 2023/24

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE MISSED WHILE ASH HAS BEEN ON MATERNIT Y LEAVE?

A: I’ve missed all the giggles of a morning. I honestly believe I have the best job in the world! I get to hang out with my best mate, and we talk and have fun for four hours each morning! Even though I haven’t been on the air, I’ve been lucky enough to be still connected to the Sunny Coast community, the mum tribe here on the Coast is incredible! They’ve helped me with questions I’ve had on Luna. Going through that newborn stage was much more challenging for us the second time. S: Like a ladder without rungs, fish without water, our show needs each other. She is sunshine in a bottle with an infectious laugh.

ASH, HOW ARE THE LITTLE ONES TRAVELLING?

A: We’ve had quite the ride since Luna was born. She has a blood condition called Hereditary Spherocytosis. Her red blood cells are slightly misshaped and break down faster. We have weekly blood tests to make sure she doesn’t require blood transfusions. Luna had a blood transfusion at 5.5 weeks old. So, she’s constantly monitored until her body gets stronger. The older she gets, the better it (hopefully) should be! Milla has just turned three and is the best big sister!

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR THE SAM AND ASH SHOW IN 2024? ANY GOALS YOU WANT TO KICK?

A: Health, wellness, laughter, and fun! We’ll be hitting the ground running! Getting fit with the Sunny Coast is something that’s been years in the making. We can’t give it away yet, but I promise you’ll love it! S: Ash and I are getting back our pre-baby bodies with a fitness campaign, and we are keen to explore some unchartered territory both in our relationship and in radio.
