FINDING THE PERFECT FIT: How the right tutoring program can help your child thrive
Is your child struggling to keep up with the pace of their class? Or perhaps they’re a bright spark, eager to push boundaries and deepen their understanding? Whatever their learning needs, tutoring can be a valuable tool to ignite their journey towards academic success. But with a plethora of options available, choosing the right program can feel overwhelming, and not all tutoring is created equal.
4 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU EDUCATION GUIDE 2024 TUTORING
From the outset, tutoring isn't simply about additional practice problems. “Tutoring shouldn't just be a recap of what students are learning in the classroom, especially if they're already falling behind,” says Rochelle Callard from NumberWorks'nWords Tutoring Queensland.
"A good tutoring program should be aligned with the National Curriculum, so it complements what the student is doing and builds on their existing knowledge. Breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps and ensuring mastery at each level is crucial for building confidence and fostering a love for learning.”
Some key aspects to consider when seeking a tutoring program for your child are:
• Experienced and qualified tutors: Look for individuals who understand your child's age group and learning style. Their credentials and experience working with students similar to your child's needs (catchup, extension, exam preparation) are essential.
• Tailored programs: A one-size-fits-all approach rarely works in education. Personalised learning plans that address your child's strengths and weaknesses are crucial for maximising their potential.
• Effective learning methods: Consider your child's learning style. Does the program incorporate strategies that cater to visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners?
• Clear communication: Regular progress reports and updates on your child's journey are essential for maintaining a collaborative approach between you, the tutor, and your child.
YOUR CHILD MAY BENEFIT FROM TUITION IF THEY:
• Need to develop skills
• Struggle with completing their homework and need help
• Say they are OK, but your instincts are telling you something’s not quite right
• Want to get into or stay in the top group at school
• Need a confidence boost before moving to a new school or sitting exams
• Love learning and just can’t get enough
• Can be disruptive during lessons or plays the class clown to cover up non-achievement
• Has clear strengths but wants to work on their weaknesses
• Need support to find their love for learning
NumberWorks'nWords can make a huge difference in a child's progress," says Rochelle. "The program is designed to be engaging and structured, so students make far more progress than with many other methods."
Here's how they achieve this:
“A one-size-fitsall approach rarely works in education.
Personalised learning plans that address your child’s strengths and weaknesses are crucial.
• Proven track record: Look for programs with a history of success in helping children achieve their academic goals.
THE
PERSONALISED APPROACH AT NUMBERWORKS'NWORDS

"Our personalised approach at
• Free assessment and introductory lesson: This comprehensive assessment allows them to clearly understand your child's specific needs and tailor a program just for them.
• Goal setting with parents: They work collaboratively with you to set achievable and motivating goals, ensuring everyone involved is on the same page.
• Positive and supportive environment: NumberWorks'nWords understands the importance of fostering a fun and engaging space for learning. They create an environment that rebuilds enthusiasm for learning, especially for kids who might be struggling or disengaged in the classroom.
• In-person connection: Rochelle strongly believes in the power of face-to-face interaction. "Quality time and connection to the tutor is also critical to tutoring success," she adds. Their in-person programs allow personalised interaction and build strong
bonds between students and tutors.
• Building confidence: They break down complex concepts into manageable steps, ensuring each child experiences success and starts enjoying learning again. This mastery approach fosters a growth mindset, encouraging them to embrace challenges and persevere through difficulties.
IS IT WORTH THE INVESTMENT?
Investing in the right tutoring program can be a game-changer for your child's academic journey. By considering their unique needs and learning styles, you can empower them to reach their full potential.
"It's always worth picking up the phone to find out if your child may benefit from extra support," concludes Rochelle. “Taking the time to explore tutoring options can be a rewarding investment in your child's future.”
Beyond the academic benefits, tutoring can also offer valuable social and emotional benefits. A positive and supportive environment can help children build selfconfidence, develop strong study habits, and foster a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
Remember, every child learns differently. Finding a program that aligns with your child's learning style and needs is critical to maximising their success. With the proper support, your child can unlock their potential and thrive in their academic journey.

How CCPS connects education with the real world

Choosing the right childcare
A Q&A WITH OUT & ABOUT CARE & EDUCATION’S GAYLYN HUTTON
Finding the right childcare can feel overwhelming. You want a safe, nurturing environment that fosters your child’s development and complements your parenting style. But with so many options available, where do you even begin?
Gaylyn Hutton, Centre Director at Out & About Care & Education shares her insights and practical tips to help parents navigate the childcare landscape and choose a service that sets their child up for success.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I started my Early Childhood journey in 1990, volunteering at my local centre, and commenced my Diploma studies the following year. My career has taken me interstate and overseas, from caring for babies in nursery to educating toddlers and preschoolers.
My interest grew, and I furthered my qualifications at university and lectured at TAFE for four years, sharing my knowledge of early childhood development with the next generation of early childhood educators. When I moved to Queensland, I had the opportunity to use my experience and qualifications as a Director and have continued in this role for over 12 years.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN EARLY LEARNING?
The diversity of my role and the people in this space. I enjoy mentoring educators, supporting families, and interacting with children.
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN AN EARLY LEARNING SERVICE? WHAT SHOULD PARENTS LOOK FOR?
Warm, welcoming, friendly educators who ask questions and show interest in your child; educators who share information about their room. A knowledgeable, helpful management team. Clean, inspiring play spaces and meals prepared onsite.
8 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU EDUCATION GUIDE 2024 CHILDCARE
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO PARENTS TRANSITIONING A CHILD INTO CHILDCARE?
Take the time to familiarise yourself with what group care environments look and feel like, and start preparing yourself and your child for group care; it is a big step to trust someone else with your child for the first time. Be as confident as possible because your child will sense if you are unsure and take their social and emotional cues from you. Set them up for success and be patient with the transition process, as some children settle more readily in the new setting than others. Allow plenty of time to settle before returning to your workplace.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO ATTEND KINDY?
Children benefit from learning how to co-exist amongst their peer group and take direction from their teachers, an essential skill when entering the school environment. Kindergarten offers a launching pad for academic learning, where children work and play together, learning social cues, rules and expectations in a play-based, childfocused space.
WHAT ARE THE KEY SKILLS CHILDREN NEED TO LEARN AT CHILDCARE, TO SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS AT SCHOOL?
Children need to develop confidence in being part of a group of other learners, enjoy the learning process, be resilient within their peer group, and be willing to ‘have a go’ at new experiences and tasks, such as managing their belongings. They need these foundation skills to launch into school confidently and with a higher chance of success.
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT MAKES OUT & ABOUT CARE & EDUCATION DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CENTRES?
Hands down, Pam [Out and About’s Operator] is the best Approved Provider I have ever had the privilege to work with. She is dedicated to providing high-quality care and treating her team with respect; we all feel valued at Out & About. This is reflected in our caring educators, our team approach, the healthy, delicious, and freshly prepared meals, the cleanliness of our centre, and beautiful, spacious outdoor play spaces.

WHAT IS OUT & ABOUT’S APPROACH TO LEARNING?
We follow children’s interests and ask ourselves how we can scaffold the children’s learning to the next level. We encourage children to understand and work with the natural world. And educators collaborate with families and include children’s voices in our learning programs.

CHILDCARE
SANCTUARY EARLY LEARNING ADVENTURE: Nurturing growth through independence and curiosity
Nestled amongst the tropical hinterland of sunny Buderim, Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure is a childcare centre that fosters a nurturing environment where children thrive through real-life learning, independence, curiosity, and a deep connection with nature.
It’s no secret that the child’s interest and voice are at the core of every learning opportunity and activity. With a consentbased pedagogy, children are empowered through their autonomy and choices.
MEALTIME RITUALS
and develop a profound appreciation for the environment. Through these experiences, children learn about sustainability and cultivate a sense of responsibility towards the planet.
Children are invited to set the table at mealtimes with a tablecloth, real crockery, glassware, flowers, and a candle.
This experience sets the scene for mealtimes and provides children with a sense of respect and belonging. During mealtime, children also self-serve and, at times, serve their friends—further establishing their sense of independence and care for others.
“With a consent-based pedagogy, children are empowered through their autonomy and choices.
Sanctuary Buderim sees all children as capable, which is why mealtime rituals are embedded from the baby’s studio through to the Kindergarten room.
CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Sanctuary Buderim is deeply rooted in nature. The centre boasts an active worm farm, a native bee hive, and a bush tucker garden, providing children with firsthand opportunities to engage with the natural world. Tending to real garden beds allows the children to witness the growth cycle
ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WITH A PEDAGOGICAL LEADER
Central to Sanctuary’s vision is the ongoing professional learning with Kelly Goodsir. The Sanctuary Buderim team has worked with Kelly to deepen their focus on a childled program and consent-based pedagogy, concentrating also on small grouping. By prioritising the interests and agency of each child, Sanctuary creates an environment where learning is meaningful and engaging.
Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure in Buderim provides more intentional learning opportunities and care for their children and families. All you need to do is walk through their front door to see and feel the impact this is making.

THE MAKING OF MEN AT CHURCHIE
The central mission of Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) is ‘the making of men’, which seeks to nurture and inspire boys to become men of character who will lead and serve in communities across the world for the common good. Established in 1912, Churchie is located on a spacious 22-hectare campus in East Brisbane, minutes from the CBD, and offers a world-class education for boys in Reception to Year 12. The main entry years are Reception (Prep) and Years 3, 5 and 7. A thriving boarding program for Years 7 to 12 has been a central part of the school since its formation.
ESTABLISHING A STRONG FOUNDATION
Churchie’s Preparatory School, for students in Reception to Year 6, offers an excellent foundation for learning within a caring, structured and exciting environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities and resources.
Boys in the Prep School complete the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This globally recognised learning framework places the student at the centre of learning and will assist in preparing them for their place in the global community. The inquiry-based curriculum provides boys with an intellectually challenging learning experience, with students emerging as articulate, confident and independent learners who increasingly take responsibility for their learning.
DEVELOPING MEN OF CHARACTER
Churchie has focused on its mission, the making of men, for more than 100 years through the expression of the school’s four tenets of academic excellence, personal growth, spiritual awareness and service. Boys in Churchie’s Senior School, from Years 7 to 12, are encouraged to apply themselves across these four tenets to develop intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Churchie offers a broad range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities, which allow boys to explore and expand their interests and abilities. Through nurturing pastoral care structures, guided by expert staff, Churchie boys are supported in their development across all four tenets of the school to support them in becoming accomplished young men of good character, strong intellect and generous spirit.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
As part of Churchie’s commitment to a broad liberal education, Years 7 to 9 students are required to study one subject in the arts. To prepare students to be confident global citizens, students also undertake a language until the end of Year 9 and may choose to continue their international language study into their senior years.
In Years 11 and 12, students chose

between the Queensland Certificate of Education and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for their academic pathways. Additionally, a Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathway is available.
All students are supported by a study skills program developed by Churchie’s Research Centre to become confident, resilient and lifelong learners.
PERSONAL GROWTH
Churchie fosters personal growth and development in the life of every student through weekly pastoral learning classes, a wealth of co-curricular activities and the outdoor education program.
SPIRITUAL AWARENESS
Spirituality is a tenet of Churchie life that seeks to develop empathy and respect for others while exploring faith and selfawareness. True to the school’s Anglican traditions and values, students are encouraged to have an openness and tolerance of the faith and beliefs of others.
Churchie boys are supported to become accomplished young men of good character, strong intellect and generous spirit.
As a member of the Greater Public Schools’ Association of Queensland (GPS), Churchie offers boys a broad range of sports and activities. A wide range of performing arts and cultural activities and a flourishing Tri-Service Cadets program (Army, Navy and Air Force) are also available.
By participating in these programs, boys develop emotional intelligence, learn interdependence and teamwork, and build resilience and responsibility.
SERVICE
Churchie has a strong commitment to service, and students are encouraged to participate in a wide array of service initiatives, such as international service tours, fundraising for various notfor-profit organisations, peer tutoring, assisting in special school programs and volunteering in activities such as the Sony Foundation’s Children’s Holiday Camp, hosted at Churchie.
BOARDING AT THE HEART
Since Churchie’s formation, providing a high-quality education to boys from Australia’s rural, regional and expatriate communities has been at the heart of the school. Churchie boarders receive the highest level of care from a dedicated core team of specialist staff who live on campus with their families, including the director of boarding and a housemaster, assistant housemaster, housemother and resident master for each house. They are further supported by a network of teachers, nurses, catering staff, and academic and counselling staff across the school who are united in their commitment to the best care for Churchie’s boarders. Year 7 boarders also have a purposefully designed residence, which allows them to settle into boarding life with their peers and form strong bonds that will develop into lifelong friendships. Each boy is assigned a Year 12 buddy to help them, especially during the crucial first few weeks of boarding.

PREP READY!
A look inside Sunshine Beach’s Prep transition program
For those parents with little ones starting Prep next year, thoughts of how their child will go on the first day of ‘big school’ may already be looming. New routines, unfamiliar faces, and a whole new environment can all cause anxiety for both children and parents. Typically, a brief tour and orientation day are all that bridge the gap between kindergarten and Prep. What if your child could feel comfortable and confident on day one?
Sunshine Beach State School understands the importance of a smooth transition and offers a yearlong Prep Transition Program designed to do just that.
We spoke with Bec Kennett, the school’s Prep Transition Officer, to learn more about this program.
“The
sessions, showcase lessons where children participate in typical Prep activities, and story time sessions in the Prep classrooms. They recently had a teddy bears’ picnic when children played in the playground with their favourite teddy bears and participated in fun activities.
While the children are engaged, parents have the opportunity to network with other families and chat with staff, fostering a sense of community and support. The overall goal is to ensure a happy and smooth start to school life, not just on day one but throughout a child's entire educational journey.
overall goal is to ensure a happy and smooth start to school life, not just on day one but throughout a child’s entire educational journey.”
Q: WHEN DOES THE PREP TRANSITION PROGRAM BEGIN?
A: The program starts in February and runs throughout the year. Each term, the school offers a variety of events designed to introduce children and families to the world of Prep. These include parent information
Q: WHY IS SUCH AN EXTENSIVE PROGRAM IMPORTANT?
A: We firmly believe the year-round approach reaps significant benefits. This enables future Sunshiners to immerse themselves in the school’s culture. They become familiar with school staff, the playgrounds, the permaculture garden and other learning spaces.
Embracing the school’s Glasser philosophy, students forge meaningful connections with their educators and
support personnel, ensuring a smooth transition on the first day. During interviews, children who may require additional support are identified and this is provided in Term 4 of the preceding year.
Q: AND HOW DOES THE WEEKLY PLAYGROUP SUPPORT THIS?
A: In addition to the scheduled transition events, the school has its free Sunshine Discovery Playgroup (formerly Sunshine Bush Playgroup) held every Wednesday morning in the beautiful permaculture garden. The weekly playgroup setting allows families to build essential connections with the school community. By the time Prep rolls around, the children confidently enter their classrooms, excited about the year ahead, often alongside friends they made at playgroup.
Sunshine Beach State School's Prep Transition Program offers a comprehensive and nurturing approach to starting Prep. With year-long exposure to the school environment, teachers, and routines, your child will be prepared and confident for their first day of big school.
Enrolments for 2025 are open now. Outside catchment area applications are welcome.

Meet the PRINCIPAL
With a passion for adolescent wellbeing, Ms Michelle Carroll began her new role at the start of 2024 as the new principal at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. We grabbed five minutes with Ms Carroll to learn more about her likes, dislikes, and impressive golf skills.
Welcome to your new role at Flinders! Can you tell us a little about the philosophy of Flinders and why you feel it’s a good fit for you?
I am passionate about creating a learning environment for students that celebrates inclusivity, respect and trust, so I’m delighted to be a part of Flinders with its vibrant school culture. Students from Prep to Year 12 are learning the importance of core values—compassion, courage, integrity
and respect. I also firmly believe that behind every student’s successful journey through school must be the unwavering support of brilliant teachers and mentors who have guided, nurtured and cheered them on.
What do you hope to bring to Flinders?
I appreciate the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and look forward to building an even stronger College community at Flinders. Staff, students,
families and the wider community can work together to inspire and challenge students to strive for academic achievement and recognise the importance of character development, emotional wellbeing and support networks. Families are an integral part of the Flinders community, and their involvement through volunteering, particularly in supporting their child’s co-curricular pursuits, positively impacts the school’s sense of unity.
I am passionate about student wellbeing and look forward to working with the College community to deepen our focus on pastoral care. Research reveals that students’ health and wellbeing needs are ever-changing, so we must tailor the support we provide students as they journey through year levels.
16 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU EDUCATION GUIDE 2024
What do you enjoy most about your role as Principal?
I enjoy talking to students and simply ‘checking in’ at the end of the day to ask what the best part of their day was. I also enjoy supporting them in excelling in co-curricular programs, from performing on stage to striving on the sporting field and other creative and communitybased pursuits. The opportunity to acknowledge their effort is always well received and a wonderful touch point.
What do you enjoy least about being Principal?
The extensive compliance work is not overly interesting, but it’s necessary for every school to complete.
What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy hiking in the bush or walking (slowly) with my 14-year-old senior dog, Jasmine.
Can you tell us something about yourself that people might not know?
I used to hold a single-figure handicap on the golf course; not so at the moment.
In today’s world, what skills do you feel are essential for children to gain at school?
Design thinking is essential as it equips graduates with the diverse skills and strength of character to succeed in a future workforce. Seeing how Flinders weaves design thinking pedagogy throughout the curriculum is exciting. The College’s impressive new state-of-theart Infinity Centre supports design thinking pedagogy with dedicated maker spaces, studios and galleries for students to enquire, ideate, collaborate, prototype, test, pitch and review.
Can you describe yourself in three words… Energetic, friendly, curious.

Under 8s day AT MOUNTAIN CREEK STATE SCHOOL
Under 8s Day celebrates the importance of learning in the early years of a child’s life. This fun morning allows students under 8 years to share a morning of imagination, play, exploration and fun!
Under 8s Day was initiated by Early Childhood Australia, Queensland, which wanted to create a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of the early years of a child’s life. The first eight years of development are crucial, and it’s when children build the foundations of their view of the world and themselves.
Children are born investigators, and this day aims to nurture their natural curiosity and playfulness. We can do that by providing various experiences and learning opportunities, which will ignite a love of
learning that will last a lifetime.
The theme for Under 8s week in 2024 is ‘Connecting to Culture through play’. This exciting theme highlights the ability of play to break down barriers and bring children together, as well as helping children to understand more about themselves and each other.
Mountain Creek State School will host a fun-filled morning with games from other cultures, arts and craft activities, and lots of fun and laughter. Activities are suitable for toddlers to age seven and their carers.
“Under 8s day at Mountain Creek State
School is the perfect opportunity to visit and experience this lively primary school for yourself!’ says Helen Denning, Deputy Principal at Mountain Creek State School.
“Mountain Creek State School accepts families from outside the catchment area, so if you are looking for quality education in the central Sunshine Coast area, be sure to come along!”

Giving your child a THRIVING START IN PREP
Preparing for Prep is a giant leap for you and your child. It’s a time of excitement, anticipation, and maybe even a few jitters. But fear not! Prep is the beginning of a fantastic educational adventure, and there are ways to ensure your child starts on the right foot.
At The Lakes College, we’ve designed our Prep year to be a place brimming with discovery.
We use a play and project-based approach built around Walker Learning. This lets children be active participants in their learning journey. They’ll explore, experiment, and have fun while developing essential skills like curiosity, creativity, teamwork, and
critical thinking. Walker Learning recognises that every child learns differently, so it puts your child at the centre, fostering their unique strengths and interests. This play-based approach provides a strong foundation for future academic success, preparing them for all the exciting learning to come in primary and secondary school.
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD SHINE IN PREP
helping them recognise their name printed and reading simple stories together. Talk about school in a positive light, sparking their curiosity and easing any anxieties. Encourage conversations about numbers, shapes, and colours – all the building blocks of future knowledge.
• Reinforce personal hygiene habits: It is key for children to feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings. Reinforcing good personal hygiene habits like handwashing and using the toilet independently can help the child feel relaxed and ready to learn and play throughout the day.
“A play-based approach provides a strong foundation for future academic success.”
As a parent, you play a vital role in preparing your child for Prep. Here are some simple tips to turn those pre-school jitters into schoolyard smiles:
• Build independence: Everyday tasks become stepping stones to confidence. Encourage your child to practice dressing themselves, putting on their shoes and socks, opening their lunchbox, and carrying their bag. Help them establish routines for tidying up toys and playing safely on the playground. These small acts of independence will give them a sense of accomplishment and prepare them for the school environment.
• Get ready for learning: Learning can be as fun as playing peek-a-boo! Engage in activities that promote pre-literacy skills, like
• Celebrate the adventure!: Share happy school stories from your own childhood. Talk about all the amazing things your child will learn and the new friends they’ll make. Most importantly, celebrate their enthusiasm for this new chapter!
WORKING TOGETHER FOR SUCCESS
By fostering a supportive and nurturing environment at home and in the classroom, we can ensure that every child enters Prep with confidence and enthusiasm, ready to embark on a wonderful journey of discovery and growth. Together, we can lay the groundwork for a successful and fulfilling educational journey.

LITERACY LEGENDS Turning reluctant readers into
Think reading is a chore reserved for quiet corners and bedtime stories? Think again! Reading adventures can be woven into the fabric of everyday life, transforming mundane tasks into exciting quests and turning your child into a literacy legend.
Even if your child may never be the ‘bury their head in a book’ kid, they still need to practice and continuously improve their literacy skills. Here are some tips on how to sneak some literacy fun into everyday activities.
Shopping spree: Prepare for a grocery shopping adventure by creating a treasure map... I mean, grocery list! Let your little captain choose and write down the necessary ingredients, adding a “treat island” item for extra motivation. Transform them into a reading detective, deciphering store signs and ingredient labels to find the hidden treasures.
Culinary capers: Unleash your inner chef with a family cooking extravaganza! Let your child choose the recipe and embark on a reading quest to find all the ingredients. Turn them into a master measurer, following the recipe’s instructions and learning the magic of converting cups to grams. Remember, reading the recipe is key to culinary success!
Storytime on the go: Traveling doesn’t have to mean a break from reading! Borrow books about your destination from the library and let your child become a junior travel guide. Spark their imaginations with online research, discovering where they’ll stay and the local hidden gems. From reading about native animals to finding the best ice cream stores, every search expands their vocabulary and knowledge base.
Pop culture pow!: Unleash the power of graphic novels and comics! Borrow exciting stories from the library and let your child become a visual detective. These vibrant pages combine captivating narratives with engaging illustrations, helping them develop crucial visual literacy skills while decoding the storyline and comprehending the plot.
Factastic fun!: Does your child have a passion for surfing, horses, or skateboarding? Turn their interests into reading fuel! Explore the non-fiction world with biographies, surfing guides, or even magazines. Your local library is a treasure
trove of information, offering books and eMagazines on every subject imaginable, waiting to be discovered.
Snail mail shenanigans: Reintroduce the magic of letter writing in our digital age! Encourage your child to write letters to relatives, practising writing and drawing skills while strengthening those cherished connections. Turn it into a family game with “chain mail,” where each family member writes about their week, creating a unique time capsule to cherish for years.
Sneaky screen time: Feeling overwhelmed by screen time? Turn it into a reading opportunity! Challenge your child to watch their favourite shows with captions on –sneaky reading practice without them even realising it!
Car capers: Long car journeys don’t have to be a battle against boredom. Reimagine classic car games with a reading twist! Decipher signs together, create silly stories based on license plates, or embark on an alphabetical adventure, finding words starting with each letter.
For more great literacy tips, head into your local library!

The Pacific community EMBRACES INQUIRYBASED LEARNING
WHAT DOES INQUIRY LOOK LIKE IN PREP TO YEAR 2 AT PACIFIC LUTHERAN COLLEGE?
“Inquiry-based learning in the early years, specifically in Prep to Year 2, is designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. Pacific focuses on providing our young children with a foundation for future learning while helping them develop essential skills and knowledge.” Mrs Sue Zweck, Head of Learning K- 5.
HERE IS WHAT INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING LOOKS LIKE IN THE EARLY YEARS AT PACIFIC:
Child-centered: Inquiry-based learning begins with the child’s interests, questions, and observations. We pay close attention to what children are curious about and build on these interests to guide learning experiences. Hands-on learning: Activities are handson, experiential, and play-based, as we know children learn best through concrete experiences and manipulatives. Open-ended questions: We use openended questions and Thinking Routines to stimulate thinking and encourage children to explore and experiment. These questions often begin with words like “what if,” “how,” or “why.”
Exploration and play: Play is a fundamental aspect of early childhood learning. Children explore, experiment, and make discoveries through play. Our teachers create play-based environments that encourage investigation and imagination.
Cross curricula units: Inquiry-based learning often integrates multiple subjects (e.g., science, math, literacy) within a single activity or project. This helps children see the connections between different areas of knowledge.
Project-based learning: Teachers may design projects or investigations that span several days or weeks. These projects allow children to delve deeply into a topic of interest, ask questions, and find answers collaboratively.
Observation and documentation: We observe children’s actions, listen to their conversations, and document their
Pacific’s inquiry-based learning sets the stage for a lifelong love of learning embraced by students, teachers and parents.
discoveries. This documentation can take the form of notes, photos, or children’s own work. It helps guide further learning and is celebrated on the online platform Seesaw, where there is an opportunity for instant feedback.
Scaffolding: Teachers provide just enough support and guidance to help children move forward in their learning. This support is adjusted based on individual needs and progress.
Reflection and discussion: Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning and discuss their findings with teachers and peers. This helps reinforce their understanding and communication skills.
Encouraging curiosity: Teachers foster children’s natural curiosity by creating an environment where questions are valued and there’s room for exploration and experimentation.
Assessment: Assessment in these early years focuses on understanding children’s progress and development rather than traditional testing. It may involve observing and documenting their learning journey, often through portfolios or narratives.
Differentiated instruction: Teachers recognise that every child is unique and may progress at their own pace. Differentiated instruction is used to meet individual needs and interests.
YEAR 8 PHILOSOPHICAL INQUIRY
Philosophical Inquiry is a core subject for all Year 8 Pacific students. Research suggests that regular participation in philosophical inquiry is associated with sustained gains across academic, intellectual, and emotional domains. So, what is it, and what have the Year 8 Pacific students been doing?
Philosophy is essentially the pursuit of wisdom, and the ‘Inquiry’ involves reflection and metacognition, or more simply, thinking about our own thinking. The subject focuses on establishing collaborative dialogue and reflection, aiming to develop students’ reasoning skills and their ability to justify their own thinking when the answer is unclear.
“In Semester 1, the concepts discussed were identity, intelligence, the mind, and mindset. Lessons have focused on formulating open-ended inquiry questions, identifying generalisations, providing counterexamples and making distinctions between concepts such as thoughts and knowledge,” shares Mrs Jo Belchamber, Head of Learning Middle College.
“Through discussion, students are encouraged to clarify meaning, identify assumptions, and build arguments and counterarguments. Philosophical Inquiry provides a strong foundation for students to hone their intellectual skills within Pacific’s learning framework, Teaching for Understanding.” Mrs Belchamber.

PACIFIC PARTNERS WITH UQ RESEARCHERS
This year, a team of Pacific Lutheran College teachers has embarked on an exciting year-long partnership with researchers from the University of Queensland’s Learning Lab to investigate Middle College students’ learning at Pacific Lutheran College.
UQ’s Learning Lab involves researchers from the scientific disciplines of education, psychology, and neuroscience. The lab’s collective aim is to convert research into practice in Pacific classrooms. It uses the lens of the Science of Learning research to connect cognitive neuroscience and teaching practice to improve student learning outcomes.
The team of experienced Pacific Middle College teachers, led by Mrs Jo Belchamber, Pacific Lutheran College Head of Learning Middle College, will investigate the power of self-regulated learning across Years 6-9 classrooms.
This project is based on the Science of Learning research that explores changes in the brain during pre-adolescence and adolescence as students respond to academic challenges.
“Through the Science of Learning research approach, we aim to assist our Middle College students to develop intellectual dispositions found within the Pacific Lutheran College’s Four Pillars of LearningLearning to Be, Learning Together, Learning to Learn and Learning to Know and Do, which support our students to grow capabilities important for all dimensions of life,” shares Mrs Belchamber.

acknowledge that children are full of curiosity about themselves, their environment, and the world they live in. We advocate for children to question and reflect on their own ideas, as well as those around them, and to take risks, where they become, in a sense, the catalysts of their own curriculum.
By allowing the children to ‘be children’, they explore and learn about their world and themselves through play, intentionally organised to promote further thinking and analysis.
WHERE IS THE BUSH KINDY LOCATED?
RAISING BUSH BABIES
AT SUNCOAST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
As open-ended outdoor play becomes less accessible for many families, we chat with Krystle Cullen from Suncoast Christian College Little Learners to learn about the nature play adventures at their flourishing bush kindy.
WHY DID THE COLLEGE START THE BUSH KINDY TEN YEARS AGO?
Bush Kindy grew out of our regular trips to the College Bush Chapel, where the children would have morning tea. Almost by accident, we realised how much the children loved the adventure, the bush, the mud, and the insects. Now, Bush Kindy is the thing the children look forward to most at Little Learners.
WHY IS NATURE PLAY SUCH AN ESSENTIAL PART OF EARLY LEARNING?
The Little Learners team has always been a strong advocate of nature play, believing that
it is fundamental for every child. For children, play is learning. Nature play significantly improves all aspects of child development: physical, cognitive, social, and emotional.
Playing outdoors builds resilience, selfconfidence, initiative, creativity, and more. It encourages the joy of movement and nurtures wild imaginations, experimentation, friendships, social connections, and behaviour.
IS THE BUSH KINDY PART OF THE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM?
Bush Kindy is part of our curriculum and supports our centre philosophy. We
We are fortunate to be set within the Suncoast Christian College grounds and be able to access all areas. Behind our service, we have an extensive bushland with large trees, a creek bed, and plenty of space to explore and gather right at our fingertips.
WHAT DO THE KIDS DO IN EACH SESSION?
Educators don’t generally put in place a routine but rather let the children explore freely, moving or staying at a chosen activity. We allow our children to immerse themselves in the environment.
HOW MANY KIDS CAN ATTEND, AND WHAT AGES DOES IT CATER FOR?
All our children enrolled at the service can participate, with children as young as two and a half participating. Our Bush Kindy days are our most popular. Many families are on the waitlist with children eager to experience the adventure.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE PROGRAM HAS BECOME SO POPULAR?
Our program has been successful in many ways. It not only allows the children the freedom of unscheduled play but also creates a space for them to negotiate, analyse, run, create, dream, explore, and get dirty. We measure our success on our Bush Kindy’s popularity—there are never any children who don’t want to go; instead, they are always asking to stay longer!

Sunshine Coast Grammar
RECOGNISED FOR 5-STAR SUSTAINABILITY
Sunshine Coast Grammar is excited to announce that the school has been recognised through The Educator as one of Australia’s Most Sustainable Schools in 2023. In partnership with the Positive Education Schools Association (PESA), Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s ‘People, Planet, and Progress’ program is at the forefront of change and sustainability.
Located on a 100-acre natural rainforest site in the heart of the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Grammar is proudly a microcosm of the broader community aspirations. In 2022, the Sunshine Coast region was recognised by UNESCO as an international site of excellence, known as a biosphere.
Leading from the top, Sunshine Coast Grammar School Principal Mrs Anna Owen is a member of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Biosphere Community Advisory Board and the Buderim Foundation Youth Committee.
“We are committed to the sustainability of our region and protecting the biosphere in which we live, work and play,” said Mrs Owen.
SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS PROGRAM AT SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR
The school takes its social and environmental responsibilities seriously and provides enriched student experiences focusing on People, Planet and Progress while delivering
on the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since 2009, students have been actively encouraged to serve others in their community through their acclaimed Grammar Helping Hands servant leadership program.
‘It is a priority for our students to contribute to, and remain connected to, the world around them by immersing themselves in and celebrating community at all stages of life as the Grammar journey does not stop once our students leave the school gates,’ said Principal, Mrs Anna Owen.
“Through our decade-long partnership with Clean Up Australia, we have helped remove over one tonne of rubbish from local beaches. However, the greatest metric is the sustained increase in discussions related to sustainability measures and the interest from students in green initiatives, including habitat preservation on the campus, the creation of projects as diverse as native beehives and reducing waste through our Grammar Green Team initiatives.”
Beyond projects big and small, students remain committed to growing their membership in the school’s service arms and being a voice for change. The community is taking a hands-on approach to environmental care and consideration with tree plantings, recycling initiatives, wildlife encounter sessions, clothes exchanges, guest lecturers and climate change workshops.
Together with Coordinator of Community and Service Mr Ben Princehorn, Mrs Anna Owen spoke at the Australian Heads of Independent Schools Australia (AHISA) conference recently about this awardwinning People, Planet and Progress program.
“I have been fortunate in working alongside our fantastic staff and families to develop a local service program for our students. Teachers and schools more broadly, now more than ever, have a chance and responsibility to bring communities together and develop young people who are outwardthinking, global citizens, said Mr Ben Princehorn.
"The school is proud of the journey thus far from concept to the first steps of what they believe is working towards empowering a generation of solutions-focused students with a passion for People, Planet and Progress."

Tips for
CHOOSING A SCHOOL IN QUEENSLAND
There is an abundance of high quality schools across southeast Queensland. With so many options, choosing the right school for your child can become overwhelming.
State or private?
Independent or religious?
CHOOSING A SCHOOL IS USUALLY DETERMINED BY FOUR FACTORS:
Location
State schools are decided by catchment area, so your child will go to the whichever school your home is in the area for. Independent Schools are those schools with fees to attend, and therefore can have students attending from across the region. But you may still prefer to look at schools within a reasonable distance to home, to avoid lengthy school runs and to ensure your child’s friendship group isn’t too spread out.
Philosophy
You may have a particular religion or philosophy that you wish your child’s education to follow. For example, Christian schools will likely include an element of religious education each week based on the Christian faith. Other schools, such as Steiner or Montessori have a different classroom structure to traditional teaching, which might be something that suits your family better. Be aware that even schools within one philosophy can vary. For example, some Catholic schools might require all families to be practising Catholic, whilst others will be open to agnostic families or those of different religions. Do your research, attend open days and look at all your options before you decide.
Performance
All schools perform differently. Some parents hold a school’s performance as most important, others decide by philosophy or the school’s environment. The www. myschool.edu.au site is a good resource to check a school’s results and scores, including NAPLAN results. Remember, something that what works for one child might not work for another. One might grow to love art, whilst another might enjoy science. Therefore, be open to sending siblings to different schools.
Cost
State schools are free; independent schools can range from $1,500 to over $15,000 per year.
For those families considering an independent school, on the next page is a list of all the independent schools in southeast Queensland—in alphabetical order, and in region.
