Tutoring makes a huge difference

The basics do matter

Julia Gilmore (M.Ed.,B.Ed.,Dip.Tch)

by Victoria Carlton, Director International Centre for Excellence

s a specialist language, literacy and numeracy teacher, one of the most rewarding aspects is to help students from Kindy to Year 12 become confident and happy at school; socially, emotionally and academically.

A

Some of the challenges students could face in 2013 are ongoing struggles with English and mathematics, coping with the new national curriculum, coping with relocation for incoming eastern states or overseas students, NAPLAN testing, scholarship testing or the need for extension for bored, capable students. Parents also have to face ever-increasing challenges and can feel overwhelmed and helpless at times. Availability of a reasonably priced support source that is practical, wellinformed and child and parent friendly is reassuring for many parents. Intervention in Term One sets a pattern for the entire year and A1 Learning Academy students achieved amazing results in 2012. In-centre or home tutors provide expert, inspirational support to students from all around the metropolitan area. Shannon was a bright, happy child until she entered Year 1 and soon began to notice that she was not coping as well as her friends, especially

with reading and story writing. In one term, Shannon jumped five levels in reading and is writing fantastic stories.

very day teachers at ICE see casualties of the “fuzzy think” approach to education. They see children who cannot read, spell, write coherently and cannot perform the simplest of mental maths functions. Australia is not doing well on the international literacy and numeracy scales and it’s time to change this!

E

Jamie is a Year 9 who recently relocated from the UK and was struggling with maths and essay writing. He was poorly organised and rarely completed assignments, homework and class tasks. Now achieving A’s, he says that he wants to be a Plumber or a Sports Physiotherapist and is determined to raise his academic levels so that the choices for his career pathway remain open.

Just ask the really simple questions: Can my child read, write and spell? Can my child add, subtract, multiply and divide?

children a chance, to give them the proper foundations for learning. The basics are not boring; they are the lifeblood of education and provide the key to well informed and successful futures. All subjects are unavailable to a child who cannot read. All sciences and understanding of abstract thoughts are lost to those who cannot grasp the concepts of basic maths and logic. All professions are unavailable to children who lack the “basics”.

Jacelyn missed out on early literacy and numeracy skills and now, in Year 5, she is dreading the NAPLAN testing. Her mum is desperate for her to revise the basic skills and prepare for NAPLAN tests.

Many parents have been told basic processes, such as tables, no longer matter. This is errant nonsense. Children need their tables to be able to problem solve, divide and perform many simple maths tasks in the workplace and at home.

Amy, who has had the same tutor for several years, has earned a place at Oxford University in England to study science.

They also need to be able to write proper sentences that contain nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives and to know which is which.

Teachers at ICE offer the “basics”. Victoria Carlton’s vision is to help all children reach their full potential. They may not all win Nobel prizes or become university professors but that won’t be because they weren’t given a chance to learn. They’ll at least have the basics - the best foundation to be able to choose any profession they wish!

Bookings are now being taken for assessments and term programs. One or two hours per week can make a huge difference.

Let’s get back to basics: teach the children to read and appreciate books, spell well and write in a flowing manner. Teach them their tables and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Children aged 2 to 17 are offered exciting, multisensory learning experiences to ensure they develop all of the 8 intelligences. Full educational assessments are also available for parents wanting specific information on

This is not new stuff. It’s not even a radical idea. It is a heartfelt plea to give

o any prospective customer considering Just Financial Services Group, this is the story of one of our customers:

T

“Like most of the general public, we were ignorant with regards to insurance, financial planning and tax issues. Until becoming parents ourselves after our son Nate arrived, our priorities shifted towards quickly setting ourselves up financially.

Home Care : Hair Care : Skin Care : Personal Care : Baby & Child Care : Nutrition Convert your home now & minimise exposure to potentially harmful ingredients

It was important to plan ahead and start saving early so we could provide the best opportunities in life for him. We wanted to be able to afford private school education as an option, sign him up for extra-curricular activities and provide a nest egg for when he starts out as an adult. The same goes for any of our other children that may come in the future.

What made us switch to the Just Financial Services Group was their individual service. During the first appointment, Nathan and Kaylene took time to analyse our situation and then financially plan the best tax structure for our family. They also informed us about insurance products that were relevant to us.

We appreciated the service given to us by Nathan and his team so much that it made cutting ties with the family accountant an easy decision. I had dealt with the accountant since my first tax return almost 19 years ago, never once did they approach us to discuss our finances even though our situation had changed over the years.

by Dr Julia Solomon t was once thought that literacy, the ability to read and write, occurred marvellously as soon as you went to school, sometime around your sixth birthday. While still not legally compulsory until six, school these days seems to start much earlier. The day care centre is followed by kindergarten, then pre-primary; then year one at school, usually seen as the time when reading and writing will ‘happen’.

I

But to equate learning, particularly literacy, with the necessary existence of an external institution negates the role that nature plays in human development. You’re are working on a misleading premise if you really believe that literacy does not or cannot occur unless a child is attending formal group instruction. Parents tend to rely on the assumption that their major role is to read to a child every day, and that success in reading will occur at the appropriate time once school begins. Sadly, many diligent parents following this routine, (though now often replaced with an electronic substitute), are disappointed when their child is still not reading accurately and independently by the age of eight.

WEEKLY

GET IN ON THE ACT!

With more knowledge about how to activate the literacy pathways from early infancy, when the child’s brain is ready (75% developed by age 3), parents will recognise the literacy milestones that a child has reached. They’ll know how to set further challenges which lead to reading and writing. They will also be alert to potential learning difficulties, including dyslexia, and the need for early intervention to prevent later problems.

Air-source heat pumps use the heat directly from the outside air to heat the water, so unlike solar they don’t require direct sunlight, meaning they can also work in winter, during the night and on rainy days.

Every donation is gratefully received, and every cent raised helps improve the lives of neglected and abused animals in our community.

AIR Heat Pumps is a Western Australian company dedicated to supplying air-source heat pumps for pool heating as well as domestic hot water systems specifically designed to work in Australia’s harsh climate. “Our kids have hardly been out of the pool since we had our heat pump installed. Now we don’t have to wait until summer to have a swim!” says Debbie from Willetton.

Why involve children? There is much talk about the ‘me’ generation and concern that our children, raised in affluent times, don’t understand that they are part of the wider community.

The Montessori difference

Inspiring students to achieve personal excellence and to be outstanding citizens who work to create a just, loving and peaceful society.

The most natural thing for a child is play, and what we do at Riverlands Montessori School Playgroup is enhance that natural desire for play. Our structured environment offers children from 0 to 3 years of age an opportunity to learn from that environment and develop skills that ease their transition to the classroom and reduce the anxieties of separation from Mum.

he Montessori approach fosters children’s love of learning and encourages independence by providing an environment of activities and materials which children use at their own pace. This builds selfconfidence, inner discipline, a sense of selfworth and instils positive social behaviour. The approach forms the basis for lifelong learning.

Research shows that Montessori students have a significant advantage over students in traditional education. In a study published in the Science Journal, it was reported that by the end of kindergarten, Montessori children performed better on standardised tests of reading and math, engaged in more positive interaction in the playground, and showed more advanced social cognition and executive control.

sually when children fall over they get straight back up with nothing more than a bruise or hurt pride. However, some sustain more serious injuries. Falls continue to be the leading cause of injury presentations to PMH ED.

U

Each year over 5,500 children present at Princess Margaret Hospital ED as a result of falls, accounting for 40% of all injury presentations. They can be easily prevented by following these easy autumn safety steps: • Never leave infants unattended on raised surfaces • Ensure sides of cots are up and secured • Always use safety harnesses in highchairs and strollers • Use gates at the top and bottom of stairs • Don’t place furniture near windows or large toys in cots; children may use them to climb up and out • Use play equipment suitable for children’s age and stage of development • Use protective gear during sports and helmets on bikes • Supervise children and help them learn new skills Visit www.kidsafewa.com.au/seasonalcampaign
