Q&A with Blueyʼs dad - Bandit

T

Q: Kids absolutely love Bluey why do you think it's so popular? A: I think it's popular because it looks good. It's got its own style and the drawings are really cool. So I reckon that's got a lot to do with it. And, as a parent, I find it funny. I think it's very well written. Q: Describe your connection with your character Bandit A: I grew up in Brisbane; the show is set in Brisbane. I've got two daughters; Bandit’s got two daughters. It's pretty relatable to my real life. So much so that my partner Lucy would often accuse me of leaking story ideas to the Bluey creators. She was convinced that I was feeding them plot lines. But it's just a universal thing that happens to parents. Parents and parenthood, there’s common themes through it all and the Bluey creators and writers have managed to really distil those core little things that happen. When we're doing the episodes, I'm laughing. I'm laughing because that's completely me. That's exactly my life.

Q: Do you have a favourite Bluey episode? A: There’s one called ‘grandpa’ and it's when the mum Chilli brings the kids over the see her dad and the granddad’s supposed to be taking it easy, but he runs around and plays sillybuggers with the kids and hides from Mum and stuff. But, it's just the last scene is really sweet when the granddad’s sitting with Chilli and the granddad said, “I remember when you were that age Chilli and it doesn't seem that long ago”. And then it fades into instead of him with his hand around Chilli it’s him with his hand around the little kid version of Chili and it’s very sweet. It's a nice meditation on parenthood and generations and time.

Teaching kids (and the rellies) about consent

By Cassie Hart ‐ Editor, Kids in Perth he man behind the voice of Bandit Heeler, David McCormack, will be here in Perth on June 26 & 27 as part of Supanova 2021. We caught up with him for a quick chat to find out what it’s like working on one of Australia’s favourite kids’ TV shows.

Competition TIME

By Cassie Hart, Editor - Kids in Perth

P

icture this: You’ve arrived at a family gathering with your children and Aunty Beryl immediately comes in for a big hug and a kiss. You happily embrace her in return, but your kids pull away and hide behind your legs. You don’t want your Aunty to feel offended, so you pressure your children to give her a cuddle which the kids do begrudgingly with uncomfortable expressions on their faces. While some of you reading this would be thinking “no way, I’d never force my kids to hug someone if they don’t want to”, others would be thinking “yep, that sounds familiar!” It’s a common scenario and of course relatives want to express their love towards the children with a hug and kiss. But experts say forcing our kids to hug relatives when they don’t want to isn’t teaching the right lesson about personal boundaries. “It’s so important not to disregard your child’s feelings. They are allowed to feel any feeling of their choice,” says Candise Adams from Safe Counselling Australia. “That is their own personal perception of the situation. We need to remember that we

see a situation with an adult brain and a world of knowledge. They see the world with feelings of safe or unsafe.” While it is probable that the kids’ reaction in the situation outlined above was a result of shyness, it’s important we listen to them and respect their right to say ‘no’. But what if Aunty Beryl thinks that it’s rude? “It really is difficult. There are cultural differences and older generations believe hugs and kisses during a greeting is a sign of respect. [Try] explaining that you are helping your child listen to their own body and that respect doesn’t just come from hugs and kisses. But saying hello or waving or shaking their hand allows both people to feel safe,” suggests Adams. By laying this groundwork, you are showing your child that their feelings are important and that you, as a parent, hear them. You are also teaching them a lesson in personal boundaries and consent.

Justine Clarke e-visits East Hamilton Hill Primary School kidsinperth

T

he students of East Hamilton Hill Primary School were beside themselves when they heard Justine Clarke was going to e-visit them and read a story. The Play School host and ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) read students Moli det bigibigi (Molly the Pig), a story by Binjari author Karen Manbulloo about a pig who likes Weet Bix. The e-visit was a result of the school winning the national prize in an Australia Post competition. Maree Sheldon from Australia Post’s Perth Airport Facility nominated the school in a staff competition run as part of the organisations partnership with the ILF. East Hamilton Hill Primary School took out the top place thanks to its strong commitment to teaching Aboriginal culture and language, and its inclusive community. “We have Indigenous children and families at our school and I knew if we won, it would be a great way to highlight and show

appreciation for their culture. Plus, because the school is actively learning the [Noongar] language and culture, it is of great interest to our whole school community,” Sheldon said.

During the session students had the opportunity to ask questions and share their Indigenous knowledge. Australia Post also presented the school with copies of Moli det bigibigi.

By Cassie Hart, Editor - Kids in Perth CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE The topic of consent has come up a lot this year, as has discussion of when to educate children about it. The Victorian Government recently announced that age-appropriate consent education would be mandatory in their public schools from Foundation to year 12, and there was a call to make it part of the national curriculum. Adams explains the concept of teaching consent to children: “Saying ‘Yes’ is consent. When I educate students in Primary Schools as young as Kindy I ask them ‘does saying maybe mean yes? Does saying nothing mean yes? Does saying no mean

yes? Consent is only when you say yes.’” Adams works with children, parents, families and organisations in Protective Behaviour and Cyber Security training. The increased statistics of child sexual abuse is why she believes educating children about consent is crucial. “Ultimately we want to educate children that they have the right to say ‘No’. They are allowed to say ‘No’. You can still encourage a hand shake, a wave, a high five. But if they don’t want to - that’s ok. Again, it’s their body and they are the boss of it.” Candise Adams welcomes you to get in touch with her if you have any questions via safecounselling.com.au or email candise@safecounselling.com.au

PERTH’S BEST...

Go on a journey with The Midnight Gang

kidsinperth

End of term treats!

B

ased on the hilarious novel by David Walliams, The Midnight Gang will be gracing the stage of the State Theatre Centre of WA from June 18-20. When twelve year old Tom unexpectedly finds himself lonely and lost in St Crook’s Hospital and at the mercy of evil Matron, it feels like he’ll never leave. But his fellow patients have other ideas...

t’s been a long, 11 week term (that included Naplan for some!) and lots of kids are counting down the days to their well-earned time-off over the school holidays. If they have a bit of a sweet tooth

I

and you want to treat them to something extra special to mark the end of term/start of holidays, here are a few of our favourite sweet treats that we think they will love…

Share a Monster Donut from Honey’s Bakehouse, Roleystone

Enjoy an Almond Croissant from Chu Bakery, Highgate

This family owned and operated bakery in the hills creates a range of delicious treats, but what made us turn our heads (and salivate!) are their amazing 1kg Monster Donuts that come in all sorts of flavours: Toblerone, Malteser, Tim Tam, Crème Brulee, Banoffee, Vegan Jam, Brownie, Peanut Butter, Jam & Cream, and Custard & Cream – oh my! This take-home, share treat is sure to bring the ‘wow’ factor – but you will need to plan ahead and pre-order yours a few days in advance.

Pop in, grab one of their delicious baked treats (we recommend the almond croissant!) and a cup of hot chocolate and before strolling across the road to leafy Hyde Park to enjoy a quiet afternoon tea over-looking the lake.

Grab a sweet or savoury waffle cone from Muffle™, Fremantle

s a recipient of a Catholic education with now over forty years of experience working in Catholic schools, I retain a passionate commitment to ensuring our learning and faith sharing community is an authentic and vibrant Catholic school. As a parent and a grandparent, I also empathise with those discerning which school to entrust their children. We are extremely proud of the over 120 years of achievement and traditions established by the dedicated families and staff, in collaboration with the Sisters of Mercy. The College offers an education for life, one that values mind, body and spirit. As a Catholic school community, we also offer our students several very important challenges - to develop a deeper awareness of themselves, of God

Working with experts in their field, Christ Church has created its own pedagogy (art and science of teaching), specific programs and a diverse range of activities to assist boys develop a strong personal identity at every stage of their journey. At the same time, we encourage them to understand the significance of positive and healthy relationships, find their sense of purpose, and foster a healthy vision for their future. Our Early Learning Community (ELC) educates boys in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and PrePrimary. Their state-ofthe-art Early Learning Centre is an open plan learning space that allows purposeful play, direct sensorial and physical engagement, serendipitous moments, and exposure to the acquisition of knowledge across many different processes. Specialist teachers in Student Support, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Library provide the students with a diverse range of experiences that enrich their learning.

Middle School (Years 7-9) The Middle School provides academic rigour in the core subjects while stimulating the interests of students with an exciting array of elective subjects. It is designed to provide students with a unique learning environment with academic, co-curricular and pastoral care programs that are sensitive to the developmental needs of youths. Ursula Frayne’s Middle School aims to assist all students to achieve their potential as they move along their learning journey and to foster an environment based on harmonious working relationships, responsibility and mutual respect.

Senior School (Years 10-12) Preparing students for life beyond secondary school is a key focus in the Senior School. This preparation incorporates three interrelated aspects: the spiritual dimension, the pastoral dimension, and an individual academic focus promoting rigour and excellence. Their aim is for students to exit the College feeling positive, selfassured and with the confidence to face the future with hope and optimism. Teachers support and challenge every individual student to develop their skills and abilities, helping them to achieve their maximum potential no matter their chosen vocation.

e humans all adhere to our Circadian rhythms or the 24-hour sleep/wake cycle. Within that 24-hour period we are awake, active, sleep then awake again. However, the actual timing of this differs from person to person because we are governed by our genetics on this one. It’s called our ‘Chronotype’. There are two main types: Morning Larks or Night Owls. Larks naturally go to bed and get up early and Owls are the opposite. Most people fall into one of these two categories. This harps back to when we were cave-dwelling hunter/gatherers. To ensure we would be successful with our endeavours (and to increase our safety) there were effectively two shifts, morning, and evening. According to sleep expert Karl Rollins, we shouldn’t try to deviate from our natural sleep cycles. “A thing to remember about sleep is that it is a very complex series of 90-minute cycles which are broken down into stages. Each stage performs a different task and one of these is to repair damaged cells and flush out toxins. This can only happen when we allow a cycle to complete and are hydrated enough for efficient flushing.” Here are Rollins’ tips for developing healthy sleeping habits: “Don’t force yourself to stay up all night if you’re a Lark and don’t take yourself off to

bed at nine o’clock in the evening if you’re an Owl.” Accept your genetic propensity to sleep and stick to it, you’ll notice a decrease in stress and an increase in vitality. “Another habit to acquire is to ditch the tech an hour before bed and make the sleep environment as dark as possible.” This gives the brain a very clear signal to start producing the sleep hormone melatonin. In the morning, get as much light into the eyes as possible, this stops melatonin production. “Another recommendation is to stay hydrated but avoid sugary drinks.” This is all simple and obvious, but the best advice usually is.

une marks the beginning of winter. It also marks the beginning of Makuru, one of the six Nyoongar seasons. Unlike the European seasons which are dictated by the calendar, the Nyoongar people determine each season by changes in the environment like the wind direction, what types of flowers are in bloom, and what insects and wildlife are doing. Makuru is the coldest and wettest season and a time that Nyoongar people traditionally moved inland. Winds turn west, waterways and catchments fill, and there is an influx of mali (black swans) as they prepare to nest and breed. Traditionally the Nyoongar people change their diet from seafood to grazing animals like yongar (kangaroo) at this time of year. As well as a nutritious food source, the yongar were also used to make bookas (animal skin cloaks) and the bones were used to make spears. Sheoak trees come into flower, wild carrots and wild potato are ready to harvest, and djida (pink tuber roots) are ready to be dug up and eaten.

Eating more fruit and vegetables linked to less stress

E

TIPS

ating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables is associated with less stress, according to new research from Edith Cowan University (ECU).

The study examined the link between fruit and vegetable intake and stress levels of more than 8,600 Australians aged between 25 and 91 participating in the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) Study from Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. The findings revealed people who ate at least 470 grams of fruit and vegetables daily had 10 per cent lower stress levels than those who consumed less than 230 grams. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends eating at least 400 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. Lead researcher, PhD candidate Simone Radavelli-Bagatini from ECU’s Institute for Nutrition Research, said the study strengthens the link between diets rich in fruit and vegetables and mental wellbeing. “We found that people who have higher fruit and veggie intakes are less stressed than those with lower intakes, which suggests diet plays a key role in mental wellbeing,” said Ms Radavelli-Bagatini.

School Lunchbox

WINT WA S

There’s nothing like a warm dinner at the end of a long, cold winter’s day. It’s also a great opportunity to get a few servings of vegetables into the family. Here is one of our favourite winter warmer recipes that is not only delicious, it’s also packed with heaps of veges! (Any leftovers are perfect to pop into the thermos for the kid’s school lunch tomorrow too!)

How much fruit and veg is recommended?

A

ccording to eatforhealth.gov.au the amount of fruit and veg our kids should be eating depends on their age. Here is their recommended daily number of serves:

Age 1-2 2-3 4-8 9-11 12-13 14-18

Veges 2-3 2½ 4½ 5 5-5 ½ 5-5 ½

Fruit ½ 1 1½ 2 2 2

What can we do to encourage picky eaters to more fruit and veg into their diet? We all know that eating plenty of fruit and veges is important for both physical and mental health, but how can we encourage our kids to eat more? Here are some tips from healthychildren.org: • Provide fruits and veges as snacks. Keep fruit washed, cut up and in plain sight in the refrigerator. • Serve salads more often. Get prewashed, bagged salad at the grocery store. • Try out vegetarian recipes for spaghetti, lasagne etc and using vegetables instead of meat.

• Include at least one leafy green or yellow vegetable for vitamin A such as spinach, broccoli, winter squash, greens or carrots each day. • Include at least one vitamin C–rich fruit or vegetable, such as oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, melon, tomato and broccoli each day. • Add a fruit or vegetable as part of every meal or snack. For example, you could put fruit on cereal, add a piece of fruit or small salad to your child’s lunch, use vegetables and dip for an after-school snack, or add a vegetable or two you want to try to the family’s dinner. • Be a role model—eat more fruits and vegetables yourself.

How much protein is too much for your baby?

F

eeding children too much protein when they are babies can increase their risk of childhood obesity, a Deakin University study has found. Dr Miaobing (Jazzmin) Zheng from Deakin’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition said babies require only small amounts of high-quality protein in their diets, in addition to breastmilk or formula.

TO SERVE: • Parmesan • Fresh Parsley • Fresh Baguette Sliced • Butter (If Desired)

Cook until pasta is al dente 5.Serve in soup bowls, sprinkle parmesan and parsley on top, and serve with fresh buttered baguette If you’re planning on buying a thermos for your child’s school lunches, be sure to get one that says it keeps food hot for up to 9 hours. A lot of the decorated containers aimed at children only keep food hot for up to 5 hours.

10 THE PARENTS’ PAPER JUNE 2021

The findings are a correlation of two separate studies. The first involved analysis of children participating in the Melbourne INFANT Program. It found that nine-monthold babies were consuming twice as much protein as recommended for children between 7-12 months. Currently the recommend daily intake of protein for that age group is 14 grams per day (1.60g/kg body weight).

“The babies who were eating greater amounts of protein, particularly meat-based protein, at nine months of age were more likely to be obese by the age of five,” Dr Zheng said. The second study involved a review of 16 studies across 7 countries which confirmed that higher total protein intake during the first two years of life was associated with higher obesity risk in later childhood and early adolescence. Dr Zheng said the results show that parents should be feeding their babies moderate amounts of protein with a good mix from both animal and plant-based foods.

“Protein is an essential nutrient for healthy growth and development, and meat and dairy foods are rich sources of iron and calcium which are essential for early physical and neurological development for children,” Dr Zheng said. “But eating less protein from animal sources and more protein from plants will establish healthy eating habits that will reduce the risk of obesity in older childhood.” Due to limited data, the current Australian protein recommendation for kids aged 7-12 months only provides Adequate Intake for infants, and not the Estimated Average Requirement or Recommended Dietary Intake that recommendations for older children and adults do. Also, there are currently no recommendations for protein sources during infancy. “I hope these findings will give healthcare professionals the evidence they need to provide better dietary advice to new parents as well as contribute evidence for improved dietary recommendations for protein intake, both quantity and quality, during infancy.”
