hen David made a young student smile and laugh, he didn’t realise how significant that moment was. Then a staff member told him that it was the first time they had ever seen the child’s face light up like that, and he realised how much of a positive impact he was making. David is a volunteer mentor for EdConnect, a not-for-profit organisation that aspires to change lives and re-connect generations. They do this by training, supporting and placing volunteers into local primary and high schools to work with vulnerable and at-risk students. There are many ways a volunteer can contribute: They can become a Mentor and work face-to-face with one student on an ongoing weekly basis to offer guidance, support and encouragement; They can provide Learning Support in the classroom to assist teachers and work with students in small groups; Volunteers can assist at school libraries, canteens, breakfast clubs and school events; Or, they can assist staff with gardening and minor school improvements.

the students and teachers, it is also a rewarding experience for the volunteer. “Being with my student from primary school through to graduation of high school, being asked to his presentation, and getting a card from him thanking me for the past 9 years and not giving up on him - this was a very rewarding experience [and] one I will always cherish,” explains Russell, a volunteer mentor. Being a not-for-profit charity, EdConnect welcomes donations which can be made directly through their website or through the Containers for Change initiative. They are also inviting people who are interested in becoming a volunteer to get in touch with them. According to Annemarie, volunteering for EdConnect is a valuable experience. “It is so rewarding for yourself as a person, but also to know you are helping a child grow in school and helping them with education for their future.” edconnectaustralia.org.au

hen I became a mum, one thing that I was quite taken aback by is how judgemental of parents some people can be. Whether it is a disapproving glare from a stranger at the shops because your child is throwing a tantrum, or a friend lecturing you about nutrition because you fed your child a salty cracker, it seems that some people can’t help but judge parents for being less than perfect. And it isn’t just parents judging other parents, 88% of nonparents say that they judge parents, with 30% saying they do so often. The numbers come from a study conducted by market research company Ipsos who also found that 84% of parents feel judged by others, with 44% reporting feeling that way often. The top reasons given by parents for why people are judging them were: their child’s behaviour and how they manage it (54%), things their children can/can’t do (37%), how they speak to their children (31%), their child’s screen-time/use of technology (31%), and how they look (29%).

Page 10

When someone casts a disapproving look or comment, they may not be aware that that moment of judgement could stick with the receiver for a long time. It can even lead to a parent feeling low selfworth which can flow-on to impact their child. “Feeling judged has the potential to impact parents’ mental health, which evidence has shown to impair children’s development,” Ipsos Australia Director David Elliott said. “Given these detrimental outcomes, feelings of judgement experienced by parents pose a real risk to children’s development.” At the end of the day, none of us are perfect. We all judge and we all get judged. But, if we collectively try to be more open minded and understanding of each other, that is certainly a step in the right direction. “Like so many issues in society, if we started from a place of empathy not judgement we would all find ourselves in a more positive, supportive environment.”

What is pedagogy and why is it important in motivating boys

kidsinperth

By Christ Church Grammar School

P

edagogy is a term that is often-misunderstood or misinterpreted, often due to the fact that there are a variety of ways in which pedagogy can be defined. Some describe it as what educators do to influence learning in their students, while others explain it as how teachers communicate content. Simply put, pedagogy is the art and science of teaching – it is how a teacher connects with, teaches and guides their students. Christ Church Grammar School’s Pedagogy is an aligned, whole school approach, which includes the ways teachers, parents, boys and school leaders work together to motivate boys to be their best. If you would like to learn how Christ Church motivates boys to achieve their best, sign up for their FREE panel discussion Why motivating boys to learn matters, taking place on Thursday 29 April.

S

ound familiar? If you’re the parent of a five-year-old, you’ll agree it’s an exciting and fun time to be raising your child – but it’s not without its challenges. So many changes are happening along their developmental roadmap that it’s sometimes hard to control what goes on in their little minds.

new things in a safe environment. However, good social and emotional health is dependent on being able to express their needs, wants and concerns.

Whilst some of your child’s behaviour will drive you up the wall, take heart that he or she is not unique. In most cases, their acting out is a perfectly normal part of growing up. Yet some ongoing misbehaviours or communication struggles could mean your child needs a little extra support.

Children need help learning how to communicate what is happening in a cohesive and structured way. Like being taught to recognise how characters in a story feel so they can begin to recognise how different situations make them feel. Knowing how to express these feelings, and knowing what to do with them, will create better self-esteem and self-worth.

Consider emotional meltdowns and outbursts. Good social and emotional health begins at an early age. A five-year-old wants to please friends and be like his or her peers. They enjoy trying

e all have our quirks, and as adults we have learnt to embrace those little things that make us unique. Our kids however may not seem to appreciate them so much – even become (gasp!) embarrassed by some of our strange habits. Children’s book ‘My Silly Mum’ delightfully explores this concept. Written by Rockingham mum and author Monique Mulligan and brightly illustrated by Veronica Rooke, it is about a young girl who outlines all the bizarre things her mum does that make her cringe. After listing off the MANY odd habits her mum has (like dance with the vacuum cleaner and paint each of her toenails a different colour), the daughter goes on to

communicate effectively. Developing and maintaining friendships, understanding new concepts, being afraid to get the answer wrong or not understanding what to do can cause anxiety in some children.

or more than 110 years, we have been preparing young men to serve and lead in this fast-moving world.

Today we are on an exciting journey as we guide the boys in their search for meaning in the world around them, and in their interactions with each other. Working with experts in their field, Christ Church has created its own pedagogy (art and science of teaching), specific programs and a diverse range of activities to assist boys develop a strong personal identity at every stage of their journey. At the same time, we encourage them to understand the significance of positive and healthy relationships, find their sense of purpose, and foster a healthy vision for their future. Our Early Learning Community (ELC) educates boys in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and PrePrimary. The Early Learning Program is research-based, acknowledging that young boys learn best when they are actively involved in tasks, when there is rich discussion about what they are doing and when there are regular opportunities to work with others. o cater for students’ specific education needs, Ursula Frayne has established four separate sub schools: Preparatory (Kindy – Year 2) Driven by a commitment to provide a nurturing approach, stimulating classroom environments and a comprehensive early childhood education, the Preparatory School crafts programs that seek to satisfy children’s needs holistically. Their state-ofthe-art Early Learning Centre is an open plan learning space that allows purposeful play, direct sensorial and physical engagement, serendipitous moments, and exposure to the acquisition of knowledge across many different processes. Specialist teachers in Student Support, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Library provide the students with a diverse range of experiences that enrich their learning.

Junior School (Years 3-6) In Junior School, emphasis is given to developing independent learners with skills in higher-level thinking, problem solving, communication and social interaction. Specialist teachers in the areas of Music, Physical Education, Languages (Italian or Japanese), Library Studies and Student Support

assist classroom teachers and students to achieve this. Further opportunities in STEM projects and other technological advancements mean Ursula Frayne continues to engage in learning that is both current and purposeful.

Middle School (Years 7-9) The Middle School provides academic rigour in the core subjects while stimulating the interests of students with an exciting array of elective subjects. It is designed to provide students with a unique learning environment with academic, co-curricular and pastoral care programs that are sensitive to the developmental needs of youths. Ursula Frayne’s Middle School aims to assist all students to achieve their potential as they move along their learning journey and to foster an environment based on harmonious working relationships, responsibility and mutual respect.

Senior School (Years 10-12) Preparing students for life beyond secondary school is a key focus in the Senior School. This preparation incorporates three interrelated aspects: the spiritual dimension, the pastoral dimension, and an individual academic focus promoting rigour and excellence. Their aim is for students to exit the College feeling positive, selfassured and with the confidence to face the future with hope and optimism. Teachers support and challenge every individual student to develop their skills and abilities, helping them to achieve their maximum potential no matter their chosen vocation.

Easy Easter Activities By Cassie Hart – Editor It’s the only day of the year I allow my daughter to have chocolate eggs for breakfast. Easter is a day filled with delicious cocoa treats and buttery hot cross buns, but other than eating way too many sweets, what can we do to celebrate the Easter long weekend with our kids?

EASTER CRAFTS

DECORATE AN EASTER TREE

Some simple crafts you can do with your kids are making paper plate Easter bunnies, transforming the bottom of an empty milk carton into an egg collecting basket, or creating bunny ears out of cardboard and a headband.

If your kids are experiencing postChristmas blues, decorating an Easter tree should cheer them up. Choose a tree or bush in the front yard (to help spread the Easter spirit) and decorate it with ribbons, arts and crafts, and any ornaments you have around the house that represent Easter.

GIVE A GIFT BASKET Experience the gift of giving with your kids by putting together an Easter gift basket and taking it to an aged care facility. Gather some choccies and some of the Easter crafts your children created, pop them into a basket and encourage your kids to hand them out to the residents. (Be sure to call ahead to make sure the facility is happy for you to visit!)

PLANT FLOWERS Easter represents a time of rebirth, and a lovely way to celebrate rebirth is to plant some bulbs or seeds in the garden. Autumn is the perfect time to plant tulip, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs which will flower in spring. If you’d prefer to plant something more practical, this the right time of year to get broccoli, runner bean and cauliflower seeds into the ground.

WHO’S #1 IN YOUR FAMILY

By Cassie Hart - Editor

O

ne of the many questions my daughter asks me is ‘what is driving like?’ I began to wonder how she could get a taste of what it’s like behind the wheel (legally!) and then it hit me - go-karting! Then the questions started rolling through my mind…. Is it safe? Is she old enough? Do I even have the guts to drive fast on a race track myself? Well after a day at Mega Fast Karts I can tell you the answer to all three of those questions is YES!

KIDS UNDER 10 - Kids 5-10 years old can be the passenger in a dual kart driven by an adult. This is a great way to safely introduce young ones to karting and speed. KIDS 10-14 - Tweens and young teens (taller than 138cms) can get behind the wheel by themselves in a Junior Kart. KIDS 14+ - For the big kids and adults (taller than 148cms) are the Sodi RT8 Senior Karts that can go at a speed of 70km per hour! The Mega Fast Karts staff members do a great job ensuring you are kitted up safely and know which points of the track you need to brake at. You get ten minutes on the

Wednesday 7 and Thursday 15 April, 10.30am-12pm and 1.30-3pm A playful all ages workshop where families can explore and create geometric patterns.

track per race – so you have plenty of time to get a feel before putting your foot down. There are sand bunkers next to the tighter corners, so if you do take it too fast and drift off the track the sand should bring you to a stop safely. This was my first time karting and I personally found that once I got comfortable enough to pick up speed it was super exhilarating - I can see how people can get hooked! If you haven’t been go-karting before but are interested in giving it a try, I recommend giving it a go these school holidays.

Me Time - Our Time Flourish for Mums 21 ways to thrive with self-care and acceptance

D

So many mums go above and beyond when it comes to providing the best for their kids. But what about treating themselves? Usually that’s the last thing on the priority list. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time for Dad and the kids to put their heads together and come up with a gift that will make Mum feel special. For those who are struggling (hint hint) to come up with ideas, here are a few suggestions from Kids in Perth.

SILK Laser Gift Voucher

edicated to all mums just in time for Mother’s Day is Sydney mum and author Sonia Bestulic’s latest book ‘Flourish for Mums – 21 ways to thrive with self-care and acceptance’. In an age where women feel pressured to be successful both in home-life and work-life, it can be easy for Mums to put themselves at the bottom of the priority list. This book is a timely reminder that selfcare is not an optional extra – it’s a necessity. It offers important advice to women about self-acceptance, selfempowerment, perspective, the importance of ‘me time’ and so much more. Sonia shares principles and her own experiences, guiding readers through a deep and easily accessible way to thrive. “Coming to a place of accepting and embracing my own personal growth journey, whilst sharing in the growth journey of my children has been pretty special,” said Sonia about writing this book.
