Inspiring Kids with 30 Years of Music

The Blight of Bullying

By Jacqui Kay, mum and manager at Brownes Dairy

By Cassie Hart, Editor - Kids in Perth

T

he first experiences children have with music are so memorable for them and for their families. The delight and wonder that exudes from their little faces as the rhythm takes over their bodies, is unforgettable. For many Australian kids, The Wiggles are their first musical experience. Be it on TV, Radio or, for some lucky ones, live in concert. The infectious lyrics of the “Fruit Salad Yummy Yummy” and ”Rock-a-bye Your Bear” stick in the minds’ of little ones and large ones alike. This year brings some exciting news! Would you believe that The Wiggles have been inspiring young musos now for 30 years? That’s right, it is The Wiggles’ 30 year celebration this year! Their many wonderful anthems have held the attention of Wiggles fans around the world, and helped us parents through those tough days, long car trips and moments of exhaustion. Brownes Dairy have been partnering with The Wiggles for six years now to help bring

W

the show to WA. As a known and loved local family brand, Brownes Dairy love being part of that amazing first experience for children - in music and in food. Our range of natural yoghurts and white milk are important staple in WA family fridges bringing all the benefits of dairy, made right here in WA with the freshest milk from our pristine south west. Brownes Dairy recognize how wonderful it is to have world class Australian children’s entertainers like The Wiggles, for our kids to know, love and see perform live. We are now giving budding WA entertainers the chance to WIN a Meet and Greet and tickets to see The Wiggles at their We’re All Fruit Salad Tour! in April at RAC Arena! Just look for the specially stickered packs of Brownes Dairy yoghurt or White milk, and enter the unique code from the sticker online. Terms and conditions apply see thewiggles.brownesdairy.com.au

hen I was kid and teenager, bullying was something that generally only happened in the schoolyard. I had classmates who would dread going to school every day, and when they were there they would be counting down the hours and minutes until they could go home. Nowadays it doesn’t just stop when you leave school. Thanks to apps and social media, kids that experience bullying can’t escape it even in the safety on their own home. If they have access to a device, they have access potentially hurtful words screaming at them through a screen. It’s a sad reality that too many children are experiencing around the world. This year, March 19th is our National Day of Action Against Bullying. To shed light on how harmful bullying can be, Sydney dance organisation Shaun Parker and Company will be performing their anti-bullying production The Yard for schools, teachers and educators across the country via live stream.

Page 08

The Yard is a compelling, physical dance theatre show that addresses themes including bullying – both in real life and cyber bullying, peer pressure, social exclusion and emotional resilience. “Sadly bullying does not yet appear to be going away, and the rise of cyber bullying in particular is a concern to anyone who cares about children and young people,” shares choreographer and company founder Shaun Parker. Parker was himself bullied as a teen, as were some of the dancers performing, so the project is very close to heart to those involved. “If The Yard can make even just one person rethink bullying behaviour, we are succeeding.” The Yard live stream is available across Australia on Friday the 19th of March 2021 at 1:30pm and is suitable for kindiyr8 students. Seven ways to build resilience in your family

W

e have all heard that resilience is important for a child’s wellbeing. A resilient child copes better with problems, bounces back from adversity and builds upon their strengths to adapt to a changing world. In addition to what children learn from teachers, storybooks and growth mindset journals, it’s important for parents to look for ways to demonstrate resilience at home, at school and in other environments. Parents are the first and most important example of a healthy response to anxiety-provoking situations. These days, families face a whole range of challenges compared to several decades ago. Here are seven ways to develop resilience subtly, which can be incorporated into everyday conversations and interactions amongst family members. 1. Feelings come and go like visitors and it’s

important that we practise recognising and acknowledging them. All feelings are valid, it’s what we choose to do with them that counts. 2. Model and encourage kindness. Doing so can help to build self-esteem and confidence. 3. Notice and support effort, instead of the outcome or achievement. 4. Relax more often. If you are looking to break away from the busyness, prioritise quiet time. 5. Explore solutions to difficult situations. Instead of avoiding, work together to break the challenge down into smaller steps. 6. Find a reason to smile more often. Smiling relieves stress, boosts the immune system and helps us make more friends. 7. React positively to failure. Talk about a time when you failed and how you overcame it. Because failure is inevitable, reacting in a positive manner demonstrates that failure is not connected to our worth or confidence. Resilience Kit runs group programs to help children who struggle with their emotions, learn better ways to cope with life’s challenges. BEES M A T T E R

Without bees our lives would be very different. Did you know that one in three mouthfuls of food that we eat has been made because of bees? That’s right – Bees pollinate 65% of Australia’s horticultural and agricultural crops, and worldwide 80% of all pollination is done by bees. But, bee populations are declining rapidly. In some parts of the world, including Europe, Asia and North America, numbers have decline by one third over the past decade. If numbers continue to drop, we will have to say goodbye to the abundance for fruits, vegetables and nuts. So what can we do to help save the bees?

The first step is raising awareness – so we’ve put together some facts and resources to spread the word that bees matter!

Male bees are called drones... as they are very lazy!

Where would we be without bees? By Cassie Hart - Editor

e all know that bees play a huge role in keeping our gardens colourful and healthy, but it’s not just our flowers that depend on this hard working insect – without bees some of our favourite fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds wouldn’t exist! According to Hive + Wellness CEO Ryan d’Almeida bees are, “essential to the production of many fruits and vegetables. Without pollination, life on the planet would be very different. Plants and food would be much less diverse.” With the rise of backyard and schoolyard fruit & vege patches, more and more kids are getting into their gardening. But if there are no bees, growing things like apples, avocados, watermelons or pumpkins wouldn’t be possible. To help little ones understand just how important bees are to the growing process, Capilano Honey has created a free e-book. The Buzz About Bees presents facts about bees and their importance to our environment and food supply. Ben McKee, COO of Hive + Wellness which owns Capilano Honey, says a focus for the company this year was raising awareness amongst consumers of the importance of bees across a range of areas. “We want

Australians to have a better understanding of the significant contribution of both bees and beekeepers to the lifestyles we enjoy.” “We particularly want to engage with younger Australians and bring to life the positive impact of bees on the greater natural environment. They may be the country’s ‘littlest livestock’, but there is nothing little about their contribution.” “We are encouraging children to care for bees, whether it’s through creating a bee bath, reducing pesticide use or establishing a bee-friendly garden. We are really excited about sharing our passion for bees and honey, and hope to inspire some future beekeepers!” To download The Buzz About Bees ebook, visit beegarden.capilanohoney.com and follow the link.

hat’s the key to a flourishing fruit and vegetable patch? Bees!

“Without bees we wouldn’t have as many vegies as we do. Passionfruit, zucchinis, melons, beans, broad beans, cucumbers and many more all rely on bees for pollination,” shares gardening expert Sue McDougall. To help attract those buzzy little pollinators into your garden, make it ‘bee friendly’ by planting lots of flowers in and around your vege patch. This is also a great activity to do with your kids. Getting children involved in the garden builds their

he benefits of raw, unprocessed organic honey have had researcher all over the world study the humble bee for years. With around 800 native bee species in Western Australia, all honey types have varied properties depending on which tree the bees pollenates from. Jarrah honey is native to Western Australia and is one of the most medicinal types of honey on earth. Research has shown that the medicinal properties of Jarrah honey to be highly benefical due to its high anti-microbial and anti-bacterial qualities which are unique to Jarrah. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and a powerful antiinflammatory. Jarrah is dark in colour with an amazing caramel honey flavour. It is important to buy local raw honey from WA to preserve the medicinal properties, as our strict quarantine laws require all honey to be heat treated when coming from overseas therefore destroying all of the beneficial qualities. Find your local bee keeper or scout the shelves for raw WA honey.

Here are Sue’s top picks: • Rosemary – not only thrives in our hot summers, it looks spectacular with masses of blue flowers. A great food source for bees

• Lavender – is any childs favourite. Perfect for decorating cupcakes (real or mud) Thrives in WA gardens. • Sunflowers with their towering heads, not only look incredible, but are high nectar producers. • Mint – there are many different varieties, all great for beneficial insects and bees. In addition to delicious food, parents can enjoy listening to live music in the beer garden while the kids can go wild in the large nature playground. During the warmer months they often provide extra kids entertainment such as inflatable sports and cuddly farms.
