How a Perth plastic movement went global By Cassie Hart ‐ Editor, Kids in Perth

THE

PLASTIC

PROBLEM Plastic is everywhere!

It’s cheap, it’s versatile and is therefore used widespread for g single-use purposes. Accordin the of , .org to plasticoceans 380 million tons of plastic produced each year 50% of it is y. used once and then thrown awa 10 than e mor y entl sequ Con million tonnes of plastic goes h into our oceans each year whic ent is damaging our environm and killing marine animals. The numbers highlight a need for action, but what can we as individuals do to help make a difference? Plenty - and Plastic Free July is the perfect time to start!

T

his month, millions of people across the world unite with a common cause: reducing plastic pollution. The Plastic Free July® challenge educates and encourages people to reduce plastic waste to contribute to a cleaner world. This global movement originated here in Perth back in 2011, with 40 participants. Since then it has grown to 325 million participants worldwide (in 2020) who each reduced their annual waste by 21kg, and collectively avoided 900 million kgs of plastic waste. We chatted to Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, the founder of this amazing movement, to find out how it all began.

Q

What was the motivation behind Plastic Free July®?

A

A day in June 2011 changed everything when I visited a recycling centre here in Perth. It was shocking to see not only my waste but the waste of several councils, I knew something needed to change. When I first tried to avoid single-use plastic for a month, I never imagined how Plastic Free July® would grow.

Q

How did it evolve from there?

A

It started when I asked a simple question: ‘I’m going plastic free next month. Who wants to join me?’ The small group of people who said yes and made changes to reduce plastic waste in their own lives started sharing Plastic Free July with their friends, family and colleagues. It has really grown by word of mouth and as citizens, communities and organisations around the world took part, it grew into one of the world’s most successful environmental movements.

Q

What would you say to those who think their changes can’t make a difference to the bigger picture?

A

I love the following quote- “Alone we are a drop, but together an ocean!” If everyone made even one change, it makes a huge impact.

Q

What would you say to families who think aiming for a plastic free July is too hard?

A

Just start with one thing – look at the plastics in your life – start by looking in the bin, in your fridge and pantry. Popular ideas to get started include switching from bottled body wash to a soap bar, or choose to refuse prepackaged produce, instead of buying carrots / bananas in a bag, buy them loose or try reusable produce bags. If you take small steps, it’s actually easy – by joining the challenge at Plasticfreejuly.org you won’t be alone, there are lots of ideas and resources and together we can make a difference.

WAʼs Plan for PLASTICS

W

hen the state government announced it will be bringing forward a plan to abolish singleuse plastics by four years, it was a huge step forward for WA’s war on waste. By the end of this year, single-use plastic plates, bowls, cutlery, stirrers, straws, cups, thick plastic bags, polystyrene takeaway food containers and helium balloon releases will be banned. "Single-use plastics have a terrible impact on our environment, wildlife, public health and recycling efforts, and the vast majority of Western Australians have told us that they want this to stop,” said Premier Mark McGowan. There will also be a ban plastic coffee cups and lids, barrier/produce bags, cotton buds

with plastic shafts, microbeads, oxodegradable plastics, and polystyrene packaging and cups by the end of 2022. This means that, just like when the singleuse plastic bag ban came in in 2018, West Australians are going to have to make some small yet significant changes. "The plastic bag ban has been embraced by retailers and the community; this is the next step of the journey to reduce landfill and ensure a healthy environment,” said Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson. Though the ban hasn’t yet come into play, Plastic Free July is the perfect time to make a change. Invest in a good quality re-usable coffee cup, stock up on a few stainless steel straws and find some re-usable produce

bags, because soon those as disposables will be a thing of the past.

Local kids greening the community

T

his school holidays, kids living in the Town of Victoria Park who are passionate about the environment can take part in a free, two day urban greening hub run by Millennium Kids.

Millennium Kids is an environmental youth organisation operated by young people for young people aged 10-25. Green Lab is their citizen science and action program which is designed to protect, monitor and increase tree canopy within the Greater Perth area. They will be in Vic Park on the 8th and 9th of July to work with up to 40 local kids to develop urban greening ideas to benefit their whole community. Participating kids will explore solutions through project based and hands-on learning. They will develop their own project with the support of Millennium Kids’ mentors and will be provided with context around urban forest issues and opportunities. At the close of the event, kids will pitch their ideas to local stakeholders and one idea will be granted seed funding to progress their concept. The hub is happening thanks to a grant from The Town of Victoria Park whose Urban Forest Grants enable community members, groups and organisation to deliver their own project to contribute to the greening of the town.

recycled plastic or repurposed netting fabric.

Cut out wet wipes

Reusable coffee cups

Instead of using disposable wet wipes to clean the kids’ sticky hands and faces, use damp cotton face towels. When you go for an outing, pre-dampen a few towels and pop them in a toiletries bag to bring along.

Avoid cling wrap

OUT & ABOUT

Bring a re-fillable drink bottle Instead of buying a bottle of water or drink when you’re on the go, purchase a reusable bottle and fill it up each time you’re about to head out.

Buy unpackaged fruits and veges Buying plastic-wrapped or packaged fruits and vegetables can be convenient, but unfortunately it creates plastic waste. Instead, look out for loose fruit and vegetables in your local grocery store, or head to a farmers market or organic store where plastic packaging is less often used. Choose lightweight, reusable produce bags instead of the plastic bags that are usually provided. Be sure to look for ones made from

Bye-bye Balloons Instead of using harmful single use balloons, get a bit creative for your next birthday party and decorate with fabric bunting and tassels, fresh flowers, paper lanterns and more!

Borrow extra cups and plates Disposable cups / plates / cutlery are easily replaced by reusable items borrowed from neighbours or friends. People who have a lot of parties often invest in reusable bamboo sets.

BYO reusable straw Single-use straws are used for a few minutes then discarded and will remain in the environment indefinitely. Choose to refuse single-use plastic straws. For those who like straws or use them as an accessibility tool, BYO your own reusable one. There are stainless steel, bamboo and glass options available on the market.

Coffee cups are not recyclable in most locations. Even ‘compostable’ cups are rarely composted as they require very specific facilities and conditions. Bringing your own cup shows others how easy it is to reduce their waste and creates a new trend.

AT HOME

Made in WA | waxiwraps.com.au

Store and pack food in reusable containers or purchase reusable silicone bowl toppers. Wax wraps and containers make a great reusable alternative for wrapping sandwiches. You can also buy washable cloth bags to store and pack food in as a better option to zip lock bags.

Use soap bars

Ditch Bin Bags

Making the switch from shower gel to bars of soap is an easy way to reduce consumption of single-use plastics. Bar soaps come in different blends to suit body washing, face wash, shampoo and shaving, so your line-up of bottles may become a line-up of bars.

Instead of using plastic bin liners, line it with several sheets of newspaper, or use the bin as a ‘naked bin’ by simply washing it out as needed. To reduce smells, wrap any icky items in newspaper first, freeze wet scraps in paper or a reusable container until bin day, and home compost food scraps.

Use paper lolly bags and source treats from the bulk food stores which carry a great selection of sweets and nuts. For gifts and prizes, how about crayons, chalk, flower seeds or homemade playdough.

Gifts Instead of toys, how about gifting an experience such as a voucher to the zoo, mini golf or an art workshop?

All that glitters is not gold By Cassie Hart - Editor, Kids in Perth

GLITTER!

“Part of that is how to minimise our footprint: how to use less plastic in our workplace and in our homes, how to grow our own food, worm farming, composting, reusing jars and things. It focuses on creating healthy kids on a healthy planet.”

M

“Glitter is a fun magical thing. Nobody wants to get rid of glitter, but when you realise the repercussion it has people are wanting to make that change,” explains Brown. Brown has recently started a campaign called Glitter Be Gone. The idea came to her back when she worked at a childcare centre and noticed just how much glitter was being used. “Glitter was a product that we used a lot, but unlike plastic bottles and zip-lock bags

and all of the obvious plastics, we were sprinkling the stuff around like it was nothing. Just all over the place.” She also found that most people she spoke to didn’t even realise what glitter was made of and that they were using microplastsics on a regular basis. This inspired her to go about educating people about glitter as a microplastic and what they can use as a fun, colourful alternative.

“Making your own glitter is symbolic on so many levels. It shows you you can still have the cool stuff, just different. It shows you that the process is what actually makes it so fun, there’s satisfaction out of making your own stuff, it can be cheap and easy.” nutmegzeducation@gmail.com

WHO’S #1 IN YOUR FAMILY

“The first step is don’t throw the glitter you have already in the bin, because there’s no point. Use it until it’s gone and then from that point onwards vouch to either not buy glitter or make you own.” According to Brown, we can easily make our own eco-friendly glitter using two basic pantry items. “The best things I found are either salt or sugar. I find salt is better because the kids are less inclined to jam a whole mouthful in their mouth. And then all you do is put literally a couple of drops of food colouring in a bowl and you just slowly mix the salt with the food colouring, and slowly you’ll see the salt colour start to change.”

Finding balance for busy school studen students

Making your own glitter doesn’t just benefit the environment; it’s a great activity to do with the kids. “Not only is it cheap, it’s fun, it’s hands-on and it’s engaging,” says Brown. “It’s got a lot of sensory play, fine motor skills, it’s got lots of benefits that just simply buying a bottle of glitter doesn’t have.”

Powering homes with food waste By Cassie Hart - Editor, Kids in Perth

W

e all know scrap food can be composted to improve soil quality and reduce waste, but did you know that it can be converted into energy? Food waste that is sent to landfill decomposes to produce potent greenhouse gases. However, if this nutrient-rich resource is recovered it can be used to produce valuable biogas, compost and fertiliser. Richgro has been converting food waste into clean energy since 2016 using its $8million Anaerobic Digestion Plant. The digester plant works like a stomach, breaking down food and organic waste and turning it into methane gas, and then electricity and other by-products. Since August 2020, the plant has been powering homes in the City of Cockburn as part of the City’s Commercial Food Waste Service. “So far, the electricity produced from the City’s food waste is enough to power an Australian home for over 22 years,” explains Clare Courtauld, Waste Education Coordinator for the City of Cockburn. “The Richgro plant when at full capacity can power 30,000 homes.” Initially launched as a trial, the service has proved so successful it will become a permanent option for local businesses from July. Eligible food retailers and restaurants within the City can prevent waste going to

The City's waste team monitor the food waste and any contamination, to ensure a clean product is delivered to Richgro.” So far the City of Cockburn has recycled more than 60 tonnes of food waste through the program. Eligible businesses can sign up to the program via cockburn.wa.gov.au (* at an annual charge of $260 per 240L commercial food waste bin service, , $78 less than the City’s annual general waste service fee for businesses.)

“A

s a recipient of a Catholic education with now over forty years of experience working in Catholic schools, I retain a passionate commitment to ensuring our learning and faith sharing community is an authentic and vibrant Catholic school. As a parent and a grandparent, I also empathise with those discerning which school to entrust their children. We are extremely proud of the over 120 years of achievement and traditions established by the dedicated families and staff, in collaboration with the Sisters of Mercy. The College offers an education for life, one that values mind, body and spirit. As a Catholic school community, we also offer our students several very important challenges - to develop a deeper awareness of themselves, of God

and of others and to live lives more fully based on the values taught by Jesus. Excellent staff, facilities, grounds and resources at each of our two campuses provide ample opportunity for students to excel in areas of curriculum, leadership and the sporting, cultural and religious life of the College.”

or more than 110 years, we have been preparing young men to serve and lead in this fast-moving world.

Today we are on an exciting journey as we guide the boys in their search for meaning in the world around them, and in their interactions with each other. Working with experts in their field, Christ Church has created its own pedagogy (art and science of teaching), specific programs and a diverse range of activities to assist boys develop a strong personal identity at every stage of their journey. At the same time, we encourage them to understand the significance of positive and healthy relationships, find their sense of purpose, and foster a healthy vision for their future. Our Early Learning Community (ELC) educates boys in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and PrePrimary. The Early Learning Program is research-based, acknowledging that young boys learn best when they are actively involved in tasks, when there is rich discussion about what they are doing and when there are regular opportunities to work with others. Their state-ofthe-art Early Learning Centre is an open plan learning space that allows purposeful play, direct sensorial and physical engagement, serendipitous moments, and exposure to the acquisition of knowledge across many different processes. Specialist teachers in Student Support, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Library provide the students with a diverse range of experiences that enrich their learning.

Junior School (Years 3-6) In Junior School, emphasis is given to developing independent learners with skills in higher-level thinking, problem solving, communication and social interaction. Middle School (Years 7-9) The Middle School provides academic rigour in the core subjects while stimulating the interests of students with an exciting array of elective subjects. It is designed to provide students with a unique learning environment with academic, co-curricular and pastoral care programs that are sensitive to the developmental needs of youths. Ursula Frayne’s Middle School aims to assist all students to achieve their potential as they move along their learning journey and to foster an environment based on harmonious working relationships, responsibility and mutual respect.

Senior School (Years 10-12) Preparing students for life beyond secondary school is a key focus in the Senior School. This preparation incorporates three interrelated aspects: the spiritual dimension, the pastoral dimension, and an individual academic focus promoting rigour and excellence. Their aim is for students to exit the College feeling positive, selfassured and with the confidence to face the future with hope and optimism. Teachers support and challenge every individual student to develop their skills and abilities, helping them to achieve their maximum potential no matter their chosen vocation.

Shop ethical kidsʼ clothing

Little Emperor (2-8 years) Named after the Emperor Penguin, this Sydney based company celebrates the imagination and playfulness of childhood. All of their garments are regularly audited by Sedex (an organisation that manages working conditions in global supply chains) to ensure factory workers are above living wage, have safe work conditions and are not discriminated against. Little Emperor avoid plastic throughout production and packaging, and they are a member of 1% for the Planet, meaning 1% of sales are donated to environmental non-profits.

If you’re interested in buying kids’ clothing that is sustainably and humanely made, here are some Australian companies that create some gorgeous, quality garments.

Bye Bye BBQ

Hello Baking

As much as I try to drag out BBQ season as long as possible, I can’t deny that it’s well and truly over. But, there is a silver lining because it also means that it’s baking season! Here’s one of my favourite biccy recipes that uses just a few staple pantry items and is easy enough to make with the kids.

Lemon Shortbread Biccies INGREDIENTS: • 200g chilled unsalted butter cut in cubes • 2 cups plain flour • ½ cup caster sugar • 2 tsp lemon rind, finely grated • 2 tsp lemon juice

Note: the biscuits will be soft when you take them out of the oven but will harden as they cool
