Sustainable studying Due to the corona virus you will be studying at home a lot. This is also the time to make your office perfectly suitable for all these home study sessions you will be doing. And if you’re changing some things, you better do it right. And green! You might think that going green in the office is difficult or costly, but with a few simple changes in your habits and a few product swaps you can easily make your office more sustainable. Here are some tips: No unnecessary printing A lot of students like to print all their summaries and other paperwork, while this isn’t always necessary. Try to go digital if possible. Store your files in clouds so they’re easily accessible on different devices. With your UT email adress comes unlimited Google Drive storage!

Look for eco friendly paper The paper industry contributes to many environmental issues, such as air and water pollution, agricultural waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Eco friendly paper has fewer negative effects on the environment and also has a lower carbon footprint. Unplug While you might think this isn’t going to make a lot of difference, it actually can. Phantom power, or standby power can become a large and unnecessary expense. So unplug your devices when they are fully charged Get an erasable notebook There are a lot of erasable notebooks on the market, that can replace every regular notebook that you were going to buy and throw away in the future. It works kind of like a whiteboard: you can write,

scribble and sketch in the notebook as you would in a regular notebook. Then, you scan your notes (most erasable notebook come with a specific scanning app), erase them and you can start all over again! Get a staple free stapler It might not seem like a big problem, but the staple industry uses more than a billion tons of steel, having a big impact on the environment. The solution are staple free staplers. How it works? It cuts a tiny tab into the paper and tucks it into a slit, keeping the paper in place. Use the office supplies you already have Last of all, try not to buy new office supplies just because they’re trendy. Use the products you still have laying around your house.

Sights of the Campus: ‘De jongen in het bootje en De Snorkelaar’ The University of Twente campus is filled with interesting sights. Next to the interesting architecture, the explorer will find people snorkeling in the waters of the Vrijhof, a gigantic can of sardines and even a flooded church. Each structure has its own story. When you are looking through the windows in the Vrijhof and you do not know about ‘De jongen in het bootje en De Snorkelaar’, you will think some students are playing in the waters surrounding the building. Luckily enough, the figures stranded in the pond of the Vrijhof are art pieces created by Petra Groen. The boy started his journey elsewhere in Enschede, namely the ‘Volkspark’. The boy wanted to enjoy his play with his boat in the waters of the park, but people kept nagging him and called the police

in a panicked state to get him out of the water. The boy was fed up with all the emergency calls, so he and his little boat made a trip all the way

from the ‘Volkspark’ to where he is now.

Student Teams: RoboTeam

At the University of Twente there are many different student teams. Each edition we will discuss another team. In this edition Koen of RoboTeam Twente will give you a brief explanation of the team! “The Roboteam is a team of enthusiastic students who work on a large project in artificial intelligence and robotics. These two subjects are very complex and for this reason, it is a big challenge. Software, hardware, electronics, and public relations come together in a complex project. It is a lot of fun

“Robotics and Artificial Intelligence are at the forefront of becoming a huge part of our everyday life” to work with people from different fields! We participate as a team in the Robocup. The Robocup is a

student based annual competition of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. We participate in the Soccer league of the Robocup. Which has multiple other categories, such as, rescue league and the Home league. Every year the contest is hosted in another country, the last locations were, Japan, Australia, and Canada. This year we are going to Bordeaux, in France. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence are at the forefront of becoming a huge part of our everyday life. In the last edition of the Robocup, we have finished in 5th place in this competition. This year we aim to be in the top 3. If you are interested in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, do not hesitate to contact us, or check our social media to follow our improvement during the year. The future is robotics and AI! We decide the future!!”

Four-Course Dinner: Dessert You just started to live on your own, hopefully in a nice student house. Probably one of the first questions you got is ‘can you cook?’ and whether you can or still need to learn it, we will help you! Five editions of the Break-In means that you will get five recipes to create your multiple-course dinner! Of course we searched for recipes as easy and cheap as possible, with only five (main) ingredients. All recipes are from www.chickslovefood.nl Poinsettia tompouce with ice cream and raspberries (2 pers.) Tompouce is also an iconic Dutch dish. It is a local variety on the French version called mille-feuille. Did you know that there are many humorous articles describing how to eat a tompouce? What is your way of eating this delicious pastry? Ingredients: -1 roll of fresh puff pastry -2 scoops of (vegan) vanilla ice cream -100 g raspberries or change them

for in-season fruits like strawberries, stewed pears, apple or rhubarb (check how to prepare them). -20 g almond shavings -powdered sugar Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. www.utwente.nl/en/lisa/library 2. Line a baking tray with baking paper and roll out the puff pastry over it. Cut 4 stars, or another shape, from the roll with a knife. You can also do this with a star-shaped cutout or print out a paper star and then cut around it. 3. In two of the stars, pierce small holes with a fork. 4. Make the two stars without holes a little wet with water and divide the almond shavings over them. Bake the stars in the oven for 20 minutes until golden brown. 5. Take them out of the oven and cover the stars with holes both with a scoop of ice cream and some raspberries. 6. Then put the other stars on top. Decorate with the rest of the raspberries and put some powdered sugar on top.

How to tie a tie Having to tie a tie might seem like something you need when you are working your office job, but it is actually an important part of studying! You will notice soon that associations (from study- to studentto sport association) have their own tie and the members wear them a lot. No need to say that it is necessary that you learn how to properly tie your tie! We have made you an easy to follow, step by step tie tutorial.

Don’t get lost While your high school maybe had about 1000-2000 students, that number is about the same as the amount of students joining the KickIn and therefore starting their year at the University. You can imagine that with more people, there are more buildings and it might be harder to find the right class in time. The UT has many different buildings and they all have, of course, a different structure in naming their lecture halls. We want to help you a little in determining how this works for some common buildings. Cubicus We need to warn you: we will not tell you how to find your way in the Cubicus, but we should let you know its dangers. According to some stories that go around, the architect of the Cubicus designed this building to get lost in it. The idea of this was that if people get lost they have to speak to other people to find their way out and would therefore be making friends. Fun story; not that nice when you are really lost. The Cubicus used to be twice as big but due to a fire in 2002 it is a lot smaller now, so it is a little bit easier to get out of. Luckily, there are other buildings that are a little bit easier to find your way out of. Ravelijn The Ravelijn has a big atrium that will make it easy for you to orientate. The numbers of the rooms are pretty easy, if you know how they work. The first number is the floor, so 1 for the ground floor and 5 for the top floor. The second number indicates the side of the building, which has a little trick in it. The 1 and 2 indicate that you need the side that is closest to the entrance, while the 3 and 4 indicate the other side. But then, surprise, there is also a 5! This indicates the middle, so 1501 is the big lecture hall on the ground floor that you can enter from the atrium, while the other lecture halls with a 5 as second number are on the second and third floor in the middle. This only goes up to

6

the third floor. There are also fourth and fifth floors but watch out! If you want to go from the 1 and 2 side to the 3 and 4 side while on the fourth or fifth floor, you need to use the elevator or stairs to the third floor, before you can go to the other side. Horst Well, the previous story is pretty clear now right? Meet the Horst. We do not need a 1, 2, or even 5 side here, you just have to use a compass to find your way here. Where you are standing right now, can you point to the north? You need that before entering the Horst! Or just read this. When you enter the Horst via the main entrance (there are also entrances on the sides, they may help you to be in class on time!), you find lecture hall HR C101 (HR stands for ‘Horst Ring). If you turn right at the entrance, you will go to the ‘Oosthorst’, the east side, which is denoted by ‘OH’. The first number denotes the floor (there only are two floors to make it easy). When walking to the Oosthorst do not forget to turn left after the canteen and sliding doors, otherwise you will end up in the Buitenhorst. If you are at the entrance and go left, and to the right after the sliding doors, you will end up in the Noordhorst. If you go left after the sliding doors, you will walk past HR N109 (nobody knows of its existence so points for you!) and you will find the ‘Westhorst’ at the end. If you are going to study Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering you will spend a lot of time here, since this part covers the workplaces. The only part that you are now missing is the Zuidhorst, I guess you can find it yourself now! Hal B, Waaier and Carré Why three buildings in one? Because these are three buildings in one. You can find the lecture halls of Hal B (short: HB) at the entrance of the Carré building. If you go right you will find the Waaier (food!) with some big lecture halls (short: WA), but for Hal B you need to go up the stairs. And then you are there. The

lecture halls you will see at your left hand are the lecture halls you need! If you need to be in Carré (Short: CR), just walk past these halls and follow the signs that indicate the right direction. You are already on the second floor here, and halls like ‘CR 2G’ will be easy to find. For all the other offices and halls there just walk around and follow the signs until you find it, in all these years of studying I did not find a better way. Bastille In the Bastille you don’t find lecture halls, it is called the ‘Student Building’ and you will find the boards of associations, the Student Union, meeting rooms, start-ups, Pre-U, the Unionshop and the Vestingbar there! Most important is the Unionshop, since that is the place where you will buy your readers. You can find it on the ground floor, in the middle.

Interview sports association Since it was possible to join sports workshops today we thought it would be nice to interview an association! We had a nice chat at DHC Drienerlo, the student hockey association based on the campus and they answered some questions for you. Can you tell us something about your association? Yes of course! DHC Drienerlo is the student field hockey association, based on campus. It is a great association! There are different levels divided in performance and recreation teams, which means there is a place for everyone. For example we have Dames 8, which is a team of ladies that just started playing hockey, so if you are a beginner yourself this is certainly not a problem! The performance teams have training two times a week, on Tuesday and Thursday, while the recreation teams have their training once a week on wednesday. Every training takes 1.5 hours and takes

place between 18:00 and 22:30. Matches take place on Sundays. Do you have something like an introduction training and when is this? Yes we do have introductory training, they are on the 31rd of August and the 7th of September. You can sign up via trainmee.nl! How many members do you have? At this moment we have around 200 members, although it always fluctuates a bit around the introduction time. There are six men’s teams and five women’s teams, so there is a place for everyone! What is characteristic about DHC Drienerlo? We are one of the few associations that have their own clubhouse, and it is a beautiful one! It is called the Boortoren, and was sold to DHC in 1969 for the symbolic price of 1 guilder. The bar is in the form of

a U and the walls are all wooden which gives a special ambiance. A few years ago our own Boortoren was chosen as the most unique clubhouse of the Netherlands! What’s there to do next to playing hockey? There are lots of committees, for example the Kick-In Committee that we call the Stick-In Committee. Every year we organize a hockey tournament called the Malle Mienen Toernooi, with around 300 participants and this is all set up by the MMT Committee. Next to this there are committees that work on the website, merchandise, take pictures or write for and edit the club magazine. So there are lots of options to learn something next to hockey! Also we organize parties and activities and while other hockey clubs sometimes organize a party called ‘thé dansant’, we have every Sunday when matches are played our own ‘Torenzondag’ which is always a party!

Typical Twentse Habits In this region of the Netherlands called Twente there are some strange customs, which can even surprise other Dutch students. First off, there is a typical local sport which is called “klootschieten”. In this sport, two teams compete against each other by throwing a lead ball, a “kloot”, as far as possible. This sport is also known in other countries and once every four years there is a European Championship. If you’re from Germany you might know this sport as “kloatscheeten” or “boßeln”. In Ireland the sport is known as “road bowling”. Once a year on Ascension Day the “Tukkers” will all hop on the bike to start cycling at sunrise, in a tradition which is called “dauwtrappen”. This

is loosely translated to dewpedling, pedling at dawn. This custom celebrates nature and was believed

“Some strange customs, which can even surprise Dutch students” to have purifying properties due to the dew. Another annual tradition is “Carbid Schieten” which happens around New Year. In this tradition carbid is placed in a milk churn together with some water. A soccer ball is placed on top of the churn and due to a chemical reaction it will explode with a loud bang. In the countryside

it is often seen that ten to forty milk churns are lined up to create a series of loud explosions. Another New Year’s tradition is the “knieperkes”, a thin and crispy waffle, which is made in a special waffle iron. They are often rolled when they are warm, in this case some whipped cream is put inside of them. “Knieperkes” taste and looks a lot like ice cream cones and are also known as “Nieuwjaarsrolletjes”.
