Answers Quiz about Enschede In the previous edition of the BreakIn you could find a quiz about Enschede. Here are the answers! Q1: answer C, 1862. Interesting fact because of this big city fire: all the buildings situated on the Oude Markt have rounded corners so that the fire hoses do not get stuck behind them (which was a problem during the fire in 1862) Q2: Answer A, true. Enschede had canals from 1325 till the city fire in 1862. The story goes that residents threw all their valuables in the canals during the fire, and that those valuables are still there under the ground (since the canals were filled in after the fire). Q3: Answer C: 1st of April. While the whole country was liberated officially on the 5th of May,

Enschede was free from the 1st of April on. Q4: Answer C: the Alphatoren has 450 steps Q5: Answer D: In the municipality of Enschede there are 4 train stations! These are Station Enschede, Station Kennispark (formerly known as Station Drienerlo), Station Eschmarke and Station Glanerbrug. Fun fact: the train station of Eschmarke is known to be the least visited station of the whole Netherlands. Q6: Answer B: Enschede was very famous for its textile industry. In the city you can still find multiple old textile factories, that are now in use as for example apartment buildings.

centre of Enschede was one big party because FC Twente became the national champion! Q8: Answer C: The brewery of Grolsch was located in the the neighbourhood called Roombeek, but moved to the current location (the border of Usselo and Boekelo) after the fireworks disaster that happened in 2000. Q9: Answer C: At the Prinsestraat you can find the Synagogue, which is known to be the most beautiful one of Europe. Q10: Answer D: The Haaksbergerstraat is the longest street of Enschede.

Q7: Answer C: In 2010 the city

Sights of the Campus: ‘Het Torentje van Drienerlo’ The University of Twente campus is filled with interesting sights. Next to the interesting architecture, the explorer will find people snorkeling in the waters of the Vrijhof, a gigantic can of sardines and even a flooded church. Each structure has its own story. Today we will discuss the flooded church, which is called “Het Torentje van Drienerlo”. The church was designed by artist Wim T. Schippers in 1979. The story behind this illustrious building is that there was once an actual church on the spot where the remains remain visible. The building sank in the typical swampy scenery Enschede is covered in. At least that is what wanted everyone to believe. In reality the creator designed the tower himself and made up the story to gather interest in his art piece.

Student Teams: Solar Team Twente

At the University of Twente there are many different student teams. Each edition we will discuss another team. In this edition Jelle, Communication Manager at Green Team Twente will give you a brief explanation of the team! “Driving 3000 km through the Australian outback only powered by solar energy sounds nearly impossible. However, we as Solar Team Twente make this possible together with our partners. We are a team of 19 enthusiastic students from Saxion University of Applied Sciences and University of Twente who all have the same passion: building the most efficient solar car in the world! For the next academic year, we have set our mind onto two different races: The European Solar Challenge in Belgium this September and the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia in October 2021. From the 18th - 20th of September, you can follow us around defending our European World Title on social

media @Solar Team Twente. It will be a 24h race and we, as the new team, will get our first race experience. Then, our next challenge is to build a new solar car from scratch. Different teams will be involved here, for example, one group will work on the aerodynamics and another on the

the Kick-In and were excited to find out what the region has to offer. Some of us had the clear goal in mind to become part of this team and some learned about it later. Do you want to learn more or want to ask us a question? Check out our social media @SolarTeamTwente or contact info@solarteam.nl.”

“Driving 3000 km through the Australian outback only powered by solar energy” mechanics of the car. Of course, we also need to find the right solar panels so that our car can drive sustainably. During the next year, we will also prepare for the 5-day race across Australia from Darwin to Adelaide. Our team consists of students with varying study backgrounds who, just like you, once participated in

Where to work - Pre-U Of course you can keep your job at your parents, doing dishes at a restaurant or delivering pizzas. But you will get soon get tired of needing to go home every weekend obligatory, and also the salary is probably not that high is it? We all know studying is expensive and a student job is much needed, therefore we will introduce you to some student employers at the University of Twente. Pays better, much more fun, you can learn a lot and it looks much better on your CV! In this interview we have spoken to three employers, namely the Study Information Centre, the Student Union and Pre-U. Read on to discover more about these organizations! Tell us a little about Pre-U: what is it and what is its goal? Pre-U is an organisation that has multiple projects for primary and secondary school students. The goal is to excite students. We want to show high school students around the University and make them enthusiastic about science. Teaching them what scientific research is and informing them about what is involved when it comes to studying at a university. What types of jobs do you have? You can start working at Pre-U through two tracks: traineeships and regular job applications. First year students can only get in through a traineeship. With this track the student will get acquainted with Pre-U and they will learn what they would like to do within the organisation. There is a more executive side, like giving masterclasses and workshops, and a more organisational side. If you successfully complete the traineeship you will be offered a job that suits you. Is it suitable for first year students? Only through the traineeship. This takes place during the third and fourth module. It takes up about 24 hours in total, so it is easy to combine with studying.

Do you have to be following a specific study to work at Pre-U? You can start working at Pre-U with every study, there are no study restrictions. There are however different poules within Pre-U, so if you’re studying Technical Medicine for example, you can be part of the Health-poule. Are you open to internationals? What language do you speak? Pre-U is only for Dutch speaking students. This is because the education that is given to the primary and secondary schools are in Dutch, so all projects are given in Dutch. Are there growth opportunities? Definitely! Within you start working as a trainee, frontdesk employee or poule employee. From there you can grow within the organisation to for example coordinator. If you like teaching and being in front of a class that is of course a possibility. Next to the regular work it is also possible to do redevelopment of workshops or masterclasses. How flexible are you? We work with a database where you can see all projects for which you can apply, so you decide when you want to work. It is expected that you www.utwente.nl/en/lisa/library work a minimum of ten hours each module, but that is easily reached with working one masterclass. When you work at the front desk, you will work eight hours per week in two shifts (morning or afternoon). What activities do you organize outside of work? Every month we have a Topic Toast. This is where all employees come together and discuss a current topic, which is relevant or funny to share. After the Topic Toast you can get to know your colleagues a little better over a drink. We also have a Christmas drink and we end the college year with a summer barbecue with all personnel. We also organize a team weekend with the office team every year. Last year we even participated with the

Batavierenrace and sometimes employees organize a fun activity for their colleagues. How much do you earn? A little more than 10 EUR an hour. Students work via UT Flex and within Pre-U we work with the student assistant system, this means you get more money when you have more studypoints. With every 60 EC (equal to one year completed), you move up in paygrade. Why would a student want to work at your organization? This is the best student job there is, Pre-U is very flexible and there are a lot of benefits. You are part of a close team of students and you learn a lot from each other. With each other we get the best out of the organisation. Find more information about working at Pre-U at www.utwente. nl/werkenbijpre-u

Four-Course Dinner: Main Course 1 You just started to live on your own, hopefully in a nice student house. Probably one of the first questions you got is ‘can you cook?’ and whether you can or still need to learn it, we will help you! Five editions of the Break-In means that you will get five recipes to create your multiple-course dinner! Of course we searched for recipes as easy and cheap as possible, with only five (main) ingredients. All recipes are from www.chickslovefood.nl Sweet potato curry (2 pers.) What is not to love about a good curry? You do not need the entire supermarket in spices when using a small life hack called curry paste. Delicious, cheap and easy, that’s

what we like! Ingredients: -200 g rice -350 g sweet potato -1 leek -2 tbsp red curry paste -200 ml coconut milk -oil -chili pepper (optional). Add with the curry paste. -You may add extra vegetables such as spinach, cauliflower or cherry tomatoes depending on the season (optional). You can cook the cauliflower with the sweet potato and add them at the same time to the dish as well. Spinach or cherry tomatoes can be added together with the sweet potatoes, but do not need to be cooked first.

Method: 1. Prepare the rice according to the instructions on the package. 2. Wash the sweet potato and cut it into small cubes. 3. Meanwhile bring water to the boil and then boil the sweet potato pieces for 5 minutes. Taste if they are cooked well. 4. In the meantime, wash the leek and slice it into slices. 5. Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan and add the leek. Fry on low heat for 5 minutes. 6. Now add the curry paste and fry for another 2 minutes. 7. Add the coconut milk and the sweet potato. Let the curry simmer for 5 minutes. 8. Divide the rice over 2 plates and spoon the curry over the rice.

Sustainable living When living in a new city, it can be difficult to know the places to be for sustainable living. We teamed up with Sustain, a group of sustainability enthusiasts on the campus of the University of Twente. Together we will give you tips and tricks for a more sustainable lifestyle. Want to learn more about sustainable living? Make sure to give Sustain a follow on Instagram or Facebook. - When you go grocery shopping, make sure to bring your own bags. Both for the larger groceries and for fruits and vegetables. A tip for this is to just put one in your backpack that you take with you to university! Enschede has a farmers market every Tuesday and Saturday. Here you can buy lots of products without plastic packaging, but again: Bring Your Own Bag. - Eat local and seasonal. Find out what fruits and vegetables are in season and try to adjust your meals to it. The same goes for exotic fruits and vegetables. Need

raspberries, but they are out of season? Try apples or rhubarb instead. Need mangos, but they are not local? Maybe use peaches or nectarines. You can also use an app called ‘Questionmark’ to scan

“Use a refillable water bottle and bring your own mug” products and find out about their sustainability. - Use a refillable water bottle and bring your own mug. All coffee machines on the Campus will dispense a plastic cup, unless you put your own mug below instead. In the Netherlands, the tap water is safe to drink, so you can just fill up your own bottle and you are good to go! - Try meatless Monday! You can use one of our recipes to try out or find your own vegetarian or vegan alternative. Ever tried grilled corn

or asparagus on the BBQ? So tasty.. Bit more daring? Try grilled watermelon! If you are not sure where to start, most supermarkets have countless alternatives to meat. - We all know that fast fashion is not very sustainable. With the app ‘Good on you’, you can evaluate clothing brands based on three criteria: impact, treatment of animals and labour rights. The app is free and also contains extra information about sustainable fashion. - Learn how to bike. Biking is a very sustainable way of transportation and in the Netherlands biking is very normal and safe as well. Be sure to pick up a bike during the Kick-In.

Dutch Habits You probably know about cycling, tulips and windmills by now. Some typical Dutch things are, however, a lot less obvious. We summed up some Dutch customs that are really good to know and not always known by every foreign student. Greeting with three kisses Three light kisses, first on the right cheek, then on the left, then on the right again, are often given to family or friends. Kissing this way never implies romance. By actively stepping towards someone with your arm stretched out, you can avoid the kisses and shake hands instead. Of course currently,

“It is illegal to cycle while being on your phone” because of the corona-virus, you have to keep 1.5 meters distance from each other, do not shake hands and do not greet with kisses! Dinner at six This one especially applies to families with children, students often favour other dinner times. Dinner is served around 18.00. The Dutch like to eat a combination of meat, vegetables and potatoes

(called an AVG). However, Italian or Asian food is increasingly seen, too. No siesta in the city In warmer countries, shops are often closed in the early afternoons. The Dutch do no such thing. In many cases, shops are open until 18.00 except on Sundays. Do check the internet for the daily opening hours of different shops! Be there in time The Dutch like their watches and are often very punctual. When you plan a formal meeting, for example a talk with your study advisor, be there 5 minutes in advance and do not come too late! Even when meeting with friends, arriving in time is seen as a form of respect. King’s Day On annual King’s Day we celebrate the birthday of king WillemAlexander. See this as a chance to party in orange clothing to honour everything Dutch. During the day, you will find people selling their second hand stuff on tablecloths in the city centre. During the evening you can party at the free Kingsnight festival on campus, or find one of the many parties around the Oude Markt.

Choose the right supermarket As you might know, the Dutch are cheap (‘kijken kijken en niet kopen’). We are often on the hunt for a bargain. In large supermarkets like Albert Heijn, where you will certainly find more than you can wish for, try the cheap products from the AH Basic brand. They also have more expensive brands. Supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi are handy when buying family size packs from nonfamous brands. Tip: when shopping at Albert Heijn, get a free Bonus Card at the customer service desk to make use of the discounts! Bicycle lights, but no helmets At night, it is mandatory to have lights on the front (white light) and back (red light) of your bike. When you don’t have them, there’s a chance you will get a fine. In the Netherlands you will hardly ever see people wear helmets on the bike. If they do, they are probably German. Helmets are not mandatory! Finally, don’t forget to lock your bike! IMPORTANT: Now it is also illegal to cycle while on your phone, you can be fined €95,- for just holding it in your hand when cycling.

Online games The Kick-In is filled with fun activities for you, but there might still be some room where your do-group needs something to do together. Here are some more activities you can do online, with your do-group! Bingo It is known as a game for old ladies, but it is more fun than you might think! Make some bingo cards (you can also generate these cards online) and you are ready to go. If you are not keen on buying your own bingo mill, you can also generate some random numbers with an

8

online bingo number generator. Skribbl.io A game you might have already played with your friends. Skribbl is a free multiplayer drawing and guessing game. The lesser artists among us are the biggest success in this game, as they generate the most laughs! Pubquiz Test the knowledge of your dogroup. In teams or every man for himself, make your own quiz or find one online, it can be as easy to set

up as you like. In this edition you will find a quiz that might inspire you as well. Kahoot Want to learn more about your do-group? Let everyone send in some multiple choice questions about themselves and add these in a kahoot. Now you can play a guessing game on embarrassing moments, favourite things and other interesting random facts about each other.

Festival Calendar The University is not only a place to study, sport and live, but also a place for parties! The big field at the main entrance, the Ganzenveld, is home to a lot of festivals. The first party is what you are enjoying now: the Kick-In! Normally there is a big final party on the last day of the Kick-In, but unfortunately this year this is cancelled because of the corona-virus. But make sure to not miss it next year! After the summer, it will be quieter on the Ganzenveld, but in the spring you will enjoy lots of fun again! We already made a list of parties and events you should not miss (next to the Kick-In next year of course!). When you are not from the Netherlands you may not know ‘Kingsday’, the day we Dutchies celebrate the birthday of the King of the Netherlands, but you sure have to join these parties! TIP VAN FLIP: dress as orange as possible and put some Dutch flags on your cheeks. Although Kingsday takes place on the 27th of April, there is also a party on the campus the night before, called Kingsnight. It serves you with all kinds of music and you may see some famous Dutch artists. When the party’s over (at 12 ‘o clock) at the campus, make sure you take your bicycle and finish the

evening in the city of Enschede! Some student associations as well as the pubs will host parties until 4 ‘o clock, which will give you just enough sleep to get up in time for Kingsday the next day. On campus you will find ‘Hardfest’, a hardstyle and hardcore festival. More into other music styles? Join Kingsland Twente in Oldenzaal! Make sure you are still kind of alive after this, because you will have to be able to use your brains. Around this time Create Tomorrow will take place (there is no specific date set yet)! Create Tomorrow is the world’s largest student think tank, where more than 1000 students and 10 organisations get together to find creative solutions for a better world. Next to a fantastic day, it is also possible to win € 4.000 if you come up with the best idea! Ready to party all those brains out again? First you’ll have to work for it! On the 2nd of May the Batavierenrace will take place, the world’s largest relay race that starts in Nijmegen (on the 1st of May) and ends in Enschede on the cinder track on campus. For the best experience we recommend doing both the running and the partying, you will certainly not regret it! The

party that takes place after the finish is not a regular UT party, it is the biggest student party in the Benelux and it is spread over lots of different areas. New week, new party: on the fifth of May we celebrate the freedom of the Netherlands and lots of cities host ‘Bevrijdingsfestivals’ on that day. So does Enschede, again on the Ganzenveld! The best part about Dutch Bevrijdingsfestivals, is that they all have free entrance. Again different stages and different music styles, so everybody will enjoy it. After this, the big tent on the Ganzenveld will be gone, but there will be another festival… Green Vibrations takes place on Ascension Day, which, in 2020, is on the 21st of May. This festival has a blend of live acts, dj’s and performance acts, it has four stages and hosts styles from techno to reggae and hip hop. As you can see, you do not need to bore yourselves, there will be enough festivals to look forward to!

Go to associations yourself! While in other years you would get stickered by all associations when you would enter the campus, this year is a little different. It is harder for associations to go to you as a participant of the Kick-In and therefore you will not as easy as normally get to know them. Fortunately, we have social media these days and therefore it might help you to go and look for the instagram and facebook pages of the associations that you think are interesting! You might have already noticed we have more than only football or

dancing here, there are also more specific (student) sports here like lacrosse, rowing or even quidditch. All different associations can be found on the Kick-In website or on the website of the Student Union, so make sure you have a look at them! It is also possible to chat with different associations via the introcloud app or just DM them on Instagram, do not hesitate to ask all your questions!

might see that puzzling all the associations in your week can be a hard job, so make sure that you ask what the evenings are that they are meeting, have training or schedule their activities the most. Also visit as many introductions as possible after the Kick-In, since then will be the moment that you will really see if you enjoy the ambiance and people there too. Of course also the workshops this week will help too!

When you are interested in a lot of activities or associations, you

Map of Enschede Enschede city has a lot to offer. As a student, however, there are some places you definitely MUST VISIT to complete the student life experience. On the right, all these places are marked on the map of the city centre, together with a few words on what they do best! Check for example Van der Poel for the best icecream (next to the shop in the city centre there is also one very close to the central station!) and De Muur and Ji-Nos for the best (mid-night) snacks. Going out there are also certain places you should visit. Aspen Valley is the place to be for a night out dancing, while ‘t Gat in de Markt is the perfect student cafe (with cheap drinks!). Or start your evening at dinnercafe Bij Flip for a nice pubquiz and go for karaoke to the Wigwam afterwards. Although you have to be a member of the associations in the Pakkerij to visit the bars there normally, they have regularly parties open for everyone with student prices for drinks and music you can dance to all night long!

Online meetings Since physical activities are not allowed currently because of the corona-virus, you have probably had your first meetings with your do-group online. And probably, there were some errors or problems because well, do these online meetings ever go perfectly? Since this won’t be the last online meeting for the coming time, we made a bingo-card so that you can check off all the things that go wrong or are funny. We wish you very happy online meetings!
