The district’s 2019 strategic plan offers a leading example of how local governments can support education and foster student growth. » Wheaton College. This fine liberal arts college of 1,678 students directly and indirectly provides hundreds of jobs for the surrounding community and keeps its small businesses thriving. » A Close-Knit Community. Residents repeatedly cited the friendliness and tolerance of their neighbors as one of Norton’s greatest assets. » Walking Trails. Norton has a robust system of walking trails throughout the town, providing easy access to parks, waterways, and recreation areas like the Norton Reservoir.
Norton’s Challenges » Education Funding. Norton’s school budget, already strained, is under even greater stress due to falling tax revenues during the pandemic. » Affordable High Speed Internet Access. Teachers, students, and elderly residents alike report facing challenges accessing affordable, high speed internet. » Water Quality. Norton’s tap water system, along with local reservoirs, have been plagued by poor water quality for years— often leaving water unsafe for drinking. » Unemployment Caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Unemployment in Norton rose to 16.7% by June, 2020.

In Congress, Alan will: Help restore education funding by passing the Heroes Act in Congress to secure $6,565,545 in funding for Norton. Ensure that all students and seniors have access to affordable and quality broadband internet through a new public option for internet access that treats broadband as a utility. Support fundamental clean water laws and pass a comprehensive infrastructure bill that secures major funding to repair crumbling infrastructure including water mains. Address the spike in unemployment through a Federal Jobs Guarantee including expanding AmeriCorps and providing Emergency Wage Support to save small businesses and keep people on the payroll.
