American Drive by Leigh Pujado

T

his new year brings something that all Keys residents can agree upon: We all are dreading the Cow Key Channel Bridge renovation slated to begin in March. The bridge, also known as the “Triangle” is the only drivable artery in and out of Key West. Rush hour at the Triangle is already painfully bottlenecked and this lengthy construction project promises to exacerbate the congestion. So, for fun, and as a professional courtesy to Mr Don McLean, I have re-written the lyrics to “American Pie” to reflect our residents’ concerns over the upcoming traffic snarls. Enjoy! A long, long time ago I can still remember how Crossing Cow Key Channel made me smile Cause I knew I had a chance To make it home without wetting my pants Cause traffic wasn’t all that vile But March 2020 makes me fearful The County Commission’s heard an earful Traffic jams on the horizon Angry residents will be rising I can’t remember if I laughed

18

#BarTabMag

Hearing bridge repair would take a year and a half Surely our leaders made a gaffe Or would rally on our behalf

Bye, bye Mister Triangle drive Took my Tesla to the mess-la but I couldn’t get by, And good ole Bubba’s slinging concrete and high-fives Meanwhile we’re all wondering how we’ll survive We’re texting “Hell if I know when I’ll arrive” Did you sit in traffic all day? And did you think “There’ll be hell to pay”? This traffic is a crying shame Do you believe in reasonable commutes? Is someone suspiciously in cahoots?

And can you figure out who’s to blame? Well I know that you’re not used to this This gridlock’s got you super pissed Your destination’s not far But you’re screaming in your car You were supposed to be at work by eight But it seems you’ve no control of fate Now you’re crabby and full of hate The bridge has made you late You started singing My my, this construction plight Maybe later we’ll be safer but it’s screwing up my life Got groceries defrosting and no bathroom in site God knows when I’ll get through this fucking light God knows when I’ll get through this fucking light Saturday I had some time to kill Thought I’d go to the Hog Fish Bar & Grill But the Triangle traffic kept me away

My friends on Stock Island felt the same They refuse to play this sick traffic game Instead of driving, at home they stay As traffic slows down to a crawl The bridge construction feels like the Berlin Wall Separating East from West And churning up unrest And the three Keys folks I admire the most Mayor Teri, David Sloan, and Wilhelmina Harvey’s ghost They all agree the Lower Keys got hosed The day the Triangle closed They were singing Why, why? To the FDOT What a cluster-fucking nightmare, surely you can agree? We need to be able to move from Key to Key And by the way, I still have to pee Yes, I said I still have to pee Comments, accolades, suggested additional lyrics: cleighpujado@gmail.com Criticism, corrections, copyright infringement concerns: larry@BarTabMagazineCares.org Concerns about the actual Cow Key Channel Bridge construction: Florida Department of Transportation Community Outreach Specialist Rodolfo.Roman@dot.state.fl.us 19

has been said that a hangover is the wrath of grapes, but more often than not it is the wrath of several craft beers, half a bottle of Scotch & four too many Root Beer Barrels at the Green Parrot. The inal 69 days of the year bring us Fantasy Fest, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years & no less than 9.85 Sloppy Sundays. As visitors & residents of the best chain of drinking islands in the world, it is our duty to treat every day like a holiday. Drinking Season is upon us, and, as always, BarTab is here to help. We know you

gave up on drinking water years ago, so we are pleased to present some of the best hangover cures from across the globe adopted for the naturally occurring environment of the Florida Keys:

Key Lime Dry: Half a lime & apply it to the armpit of your drinking arm before you start drinking. They swear by the method in Old San Juan & claim a lemon will work just as well. Make it a Keys cure by using fresh Key limes, graham cracker & sweetened condensed milk. Fat people will love you. Rooster Pooh Tea: Cowboys in the Old West tamed their hangovers with a nice brew of rabbit pooh. You’ll have better luck #BarTabMag

23

with our feathered friends here & it’s a great excuse to beat the shit out of the rooster who kept you awake all night. The Hemingway: When all else fails you have two choices. Drink the pain away or head to Idaho & kill yourself. Rooster Pooh Tea suddenly doesn’t seem like such a bad option.

5K Cure: Native Americans kicked off their hangover with a brisk run & completed the cure by licking up their own sweat. Believe it or not, Key West has a ine looking group of it runners. Save your energy & grab a beer near the inish line of the next race. Grab a hottie & start licking. Tell the police it’s a cultural thing.

24

The 800: An ancient Sicilian tradition prescribed dried horse penis as a cure for over-imbibing. The local police force apparently frowns upon removing the penis’ from their mounted patrol, but a visit to the 800 block of Duval Street will present several people willing to give you their penis. Many of them are hung like horses.

Voodoo: Haitians start the morning by placing 13 pins in the cork of the offending bottle & calling on the spirits to remove the poison from their bodies. Forget the pins; drink some Emergen-C & head to the cemetery. You will be in good company knowing that no matter how shitty you feel, the rest of the people there are worse off. Sex On The Beach: A Roman tradition involved a quick trip to the vomitorium followed by a day of sex with one of the town scribes. Add some Key West style by seducing a BarTab columnist with ine food, booze & kinky sex. Don’t forget to brush your teeth. Happy Hangovers.

Jess Bowman Old Town Tavern, 900 Duval St

Full name, originally from? Jessica Bowman & I’m from Clitheroe which is spelled C-l-i-t-h-e-r-o-e. I’m from clit hero. What was it like growing up in Clitheroe? It’s really not as exciting as the name suggests. It’s a little market town & the guys are definitely not clit heroes. [laughs] So this is not the first time you’ve heard this? No. [laughs] My old boss used to tell everybody that I was from clit hero, but I’d say I’m from Manchester. How did you end up in Key West? I booked a last minute ticket to Vegas. It was day five & I had to leave Vegas. So, I took a red eye to Miami & drunkenly fell asleep on the Greyhound bus, which was on its way to Key West. Briefly discuss your rise towards Key West wide bartender fame. Wow, [laughs] I didn’t know I was a famous bartender. I’ve been here almost four years. I love bartending. I’ve always been a people person. I think my accent kind of plays a big role in how people perceive me, cuz everything I say just sounds more fun. And I cuss a lot, admittedly.

BarTender Profile How do you spend your nights off? I prefer day drinking, so nights off I’m probably already at home sleeping. But I like going to the Tropic. I like going to dinner Lola’s is one of my new favorites. Nights I prefer to be at home. Name one thing about yourself you’d like to perfect? My filter. Definitely my mouth filter. And I would like to perfect the art of stopping drinking when you’re supposed to. What’s something people may not know about Old Town Tavern? It’s a great, comfortable, happy atmosphere & the food is awesome. Favorite menu item? Scotch eggs or the Burrata Salad with blackened cauliflower.

Are you a whiskey, vodka or tequila girl? All of the above.

What’s your favorite part about living in Key West? It’s the most accepting place I’ve ever lived. It’s the only place I have ever lived where I felt comfortable being myself.

If money was no object, what would you do tomorrow? I would go to the store & buy a Dodge Hellcat & I would just take off. I would buy that car & I would take off.

Fun fact, Scotch Eggs are even better if you order them from Jess at Old Town Tavern, 900 Duval St. because of her Scotish-ish accent. Catch her behind the bar days Mon+Tues 12-8p & Wed+Fri 2:30-8p. #BarTabMag

R ob Benton

Hank’s Saloon, 409 Caroline St Full name, originally from? Robert Michael Benson & originally from Boston, but spent pretty much most of my life in Florida.

How long have you been playing music professionally? I started playing out when I was 20. I had a regular day job, but I was also performing 3 or 4 nights a week. What other jobs have you had? I used to be a paramedic firefighter full-time. What brought you down to Key West? I came down here for a couple of days to visit a buddy of mine & Chris Toler invited me up on stage at Willie T’s. I continued to play for the rest of the show alongside Chris. That’s how I met K-Ru$h who does the show with me. Everybody down here that ran a bar started email me when I got back home. They were asking me when I can come back down & if I could move here. I was actually getting close to hanging up my music career back home, because I was touring constantly & I have health problems, so is very was hard for me to do that. I weighed all the pros & cons & decided that I could continue to do my music career if I didn’t have to tour, & I could not tour if I lived in Key West, because the world comes to me.

When was that? It was boat race weekend, November 2018 was when I came down for those two days. I went back home & I came back for the month of December & played my first real set of shows, where I played seven or eight shows a week. Then I went home for a month & then that was it. The next trip I came & I bought a house & then I had an

opportunity come up to buy a bar. & I bought a bar with my brother. Then I moved my brother down here & I’ve been living in Key West now full time since March of 2019. How would you describe your music in 5 words? Wow, in 5 words? Country, rap, rock, nonsense. We’ll do 4 words. [laughs] What or who are your influences? Everything really. Even like construction sites. Everything that has a beat. Most musicians - guitar players & piano players, their influences would be guitar players & piano players. But as a guitar player, my influences start with drums & percussion, which is evident in all of my shows. So everything I hear, cars passing me in a certain rhythm. Just certain beats. Music just comes to me that way. As musical influences, everything from Alan Jackson to Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks. Even death metal musicians, jazz players, I’m all over the map. I can’t really named one specific person. Music has been a part of my life since I was walking. #BarTabMag

How do you decide to blend say, Tom Petty / Ed Sheeran/ Tracy Chapman songs together? They’ve all kind of evolved along the way. I never sat down with my setlist; my cover songs, my original music & organize how I was going to do something, like this would fit really great in this or this or this. A lot of times it came because I didn’t know all of the Tracy Chapman song, or I didn’t know all of the Ed Sheeran song, & I’d be playing Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” & somebody in the crowd requested Tracy Chapman or Ed Sheeran & I didn’t know all of it, so I know some of the words, I’ll just throw them in this Tom Petty song. It became a thing. All my mashups were born in a similar fashion. Best way to get a lame crowd going? Be demanding. Be forceful. Everyone’s so polite, & there’s something to be said about that, but for me when I step onto a stage I’m coming out as a musician, but I’m also coming out like a UFC fighter. I’m ready to fight. I’m ready to swing. Explain the feeling you get when you pump the crowd up. I love it. I’m an automobile when I’m on stage. The audience participation, the cheers, the claps, the laughter, even if it’s at me, that’s the gasoline. That’s my diesel fuel. That’s what I need to keep going throughout the gig. I have a lifelong illness. I’m very sore & in a lot of pain. I’m at at 6 or 7 every single day, it’s pretty hard. I don’t want to cry about it, but it’s pretty hard to get onstage some days. & if I get on stage & I’m feeling like shit, & I have a really great crowd that’s really feeling what I’m doing & they’re into it, & they’re letting me know, that takes away all that pain & all that frustration that I feel daily & it lets me get through that gig. Then the next day it’s just a do over. 34

#BarTabMag

How long does it take you to get a song ready to perform? [laughs] 30 seconds. I don’t rehearse at all. Neither does K-Ru$h. We don’t rehearse at all. I’m not saying that we’re so great & that’s why we don’t rehearse. I think that I’m a hack. K-Ru$h would say the same thing. We just get on stage & we go where the crowd takes us. People holler songs out at us & we just look at each other like, ‘All right, let’s try it.’ I have an iPad with me if I need lyrics. I try not to, but they’re there if I need to. But I don’t practice at home. I don’t play guitar at home. What’s one thing you’d like to tell Key West bar owners? [laughs] That’s a loaded question. I own a couple bars here & some other projects back home, & I don’t proclaim to know it all. What would I tell the bar owners? I appreciate you all. Thank you very much for having live music at your location, even if I don’t perform there. Having live music is tough. It’s a dying industry in a lot of locations, except for here.
