“Stuck in the Middle (Age) with You” I by Leigh Pujado was recently (and abruptly) given some terrible news by my doctor. She delivered the shitty news without warning, and with no attempt to soften the blow. “Now that you are middle aged,” she barked, “you really need to come in for blood work to check your cholesterol, blood sugar and liver enzymes.” “Middle aged.” The phrase had a cavernous and caustic echo in my ear. I wanted to shout at her, “ Call me “middle aged” one more time, lady, and I’ll show you my middle finger!” But I didn’t yell at her. Instead, I sat there, momentarily dumbfounded. I thought, “How could I possibly be middle aged? I have a really hot boyfriend and barely any money in the bank.” After an awkward silence, I broke into a passionate argument about how I was perfectly healthy, felt great, was in great shape, and did not need blood work. Unimpressed by my

18

#BarTabMag

youthful fervor, she glanced coldly over my chart and said to schedule any weekday of my choosing for fasting blood tests with the nurse. Bitch! Dejected and sad, I slinked out the door to ponder the possible passing of my youth. Was I really old enough to need tests for old-people problems? I mean, I really do work out everyday, I avoid trans-fats, I don’t smoke, and I don’t drink wine on Wednesdays. Sure, I wasn’t entirely forthcoming with the doctor about just how much bacon, red meat and alcohol I consume, but for the most part, I do feel great, and frankly I am still a little miffed at her for forcing me to get a yearly mammogram. Maybe she misread my date of birth and thinks I am older than I really am. I always thought that getting older meant going gray, finding bliss in the perfect recliner, eating dinner at 5pm, yelling at the television, and the eventual slide into purchasing Polident and Depends at Walgreens. At forty-four, I’m

accomplishing most of this list, though I’ve managed, thus far, to avoid the need for diapers and denture adhesive. My friend Kathy, (who, it is worth noting, is older than me,) says I’ve definitely crossed over into middle age because I often blurt things out that would be better kept to myself. So if my verbal filter is failing, perhaps my body is too. Maybe my doctor was right. I am getting older. The truth is I didn’t want to hear the truth. Not only did I not want to live in the reality of my own mortality, I didn’t want to know that possibly somewhere in this middle aged body lurked a threat to my perceived youthful vitality. What if I had cancer? What if my arteries were clogged? What if I were told I have to give up bacon? Plus, if I really am middle aged, that means this thing called “life” is half over and I need to examine how to better spend my time. There’s got to be more to this existence than simply going to work, working out, and watching Netflix. There is so much I want to accomplish, and time, apparently, is of essence. I still haven’t seen the Pyramids in Egypt or Petra in Jordan. I still haven’t learned French or Taekwondo. 19

I haven’t cleaned my gutters since last Fall. I haven’t called my friend Audrey back for almost a year. And I still don’t know what a 401K is even though I supposedly have one. Now that I’ve been enlightened to my body’s inevitable decline, where do I begin? Do I have a cliched mid-life crisis? I already went through the phase of buying a convertible back in my thirties, and I’m certainly not interested in having an affair. (I wasn’t kidding when I said I have a hot boyfriend!) I suppose I could do something super bold like quit my job and move to Europe. But I actually like my job and I don’t speak French, or German, or Italian, or any other foreign languages. Instead of a mid-life crisis, maybe I can just take up mid-life behaviors. I could start an IRA, learn how to golf, watch FOX News, sign up for water aerobics, buy some orthopedic shoes… Or maybe I could fight the whole age thing, act super youthful, pretend it’s not happening and drink margaritas during the daytime on a shimmering cloud of denial! That sounds more like me. If pressed to choose between voices, I prefer the ones in my head over Sean Hannity’s and Phil Mickelson’s. In reality, I didn’t choose tequila and denial over medical advice. I scheduled the stupid blood work, but not without expressing my indignation to the unsuspecting receptionist. The morning of my blood test, I toyed briefly with the idea of skipping into my doctor’s office sporting a super short skirt, a Hello Kitty backpack, and pigtails. “Ha, ha, Suckers! Who’s middle aged now?” I imagined 20

#BarTabMag

I would snarl while loudly popping my bubble gum. Then I remembered most of my skirts are tea length, none of my bags have cartoons on them and the only time a women my age wears pigtails is when she is sexy role playing a naughty school girl. In the end, I went to my stupid appointment in normal, age appropriate attire. No one in the doctor’s office but me found anything about my blood draw eventful. As the nurse filled three vials from my right arm, I felt the last bastion of my youth pouring out me but I hid my trauma like a mature adult. When it was over, I mused about how I identified with The Grinch when Christmas came in spite of his efforts to thwart the whole event. Middle Age was my dreaded Christmas. “It came without golf clubs, aches or pains, It came without arthritis, walkers or canes, It came without dentures, bridge club or meds, It came without bifocals or adjustable beds!” And she puzzled and puzzled ‘till her puzzler was sore, Then the Pujado thought of something she hadn’t before: “What if Middle Age doesn’t have to be a mind numbing bore? What if Middle Age, perhaps, means a little bit more?” And what happened next? Well in Key West they swear, The Pujado’s blood draw proved her healthy that year! And with that, The Pujado unfurled her brow, Got back to living life and stopped throwing a cow.” Comments/Questions/Middle Age Jokes: cleighpujado@gmail.com

Southernmost Point

by Bill Hoebee The actual title (do over) should be, “I’ve parodied or flat out made fun of everything except the Southernmost Point.” My first day as a resident of the Florida Keys was May 30, 1991, and except for a few attempts to escape to the “real world,” I was always lured back. Why? Here’s why. In all my time here I’ve never been to most of the tourist attractions including the Southernmost Point. So, I thought I’d spend the ‘day’ there (45 minutes,) to see why people would wait in line to get their picture taken in front of a large painted rock. Esteemed late writer, Thomas Wolfe, who when asked, “What his writing style

24

was,” replied something along the lines of, “You just have to show up one day and say I’m from Mars, what is this?” I could have Googled the exact quote in the amount of time it took me to write this, but apparently I’m too lazy. Okay? I just Googled the quote. I was somehow exact. I told the tourists at the Southernmost Point that I was a freelance writer, true, wondering why people chose to come visit our town, not true. Full disclosure, in 90% of the interviews I did I also had to take on the temporary role as their Southernmost Point photographer. I enjoyed a wide variety of posing styles, including but not limited to, the “thumbs up,” which I believe is the historic landmark “Gold Standard.” And of course the renegades who all flipped the bird. The first people I spoke to were from a cruise ship and literally had only been here 2 hours. I was going to fake that I was a tourist also, but several of our fun loving “residentially challenged” and one trolly driver outed me as a radio and TV personality. They were stocked with four shopping bags filled with Key West shirts, trinkets and more. I noticed some of the t-shirts had vagina and wiener stuff written on them. “Who’s the lucky friend to get those?” I thought.

TIME OUT FOR A QUICK TOURIST TIP: Do your shopping on the way back to your ship, so you don’t have to lug that shit around for 5 hours. Unless of course, humping around shopping bags is part of your workout regimen. GAME ON (Wayne’s World reference.) The couple asked me not to use their real names, so... Pete and Joan Dinapoli, your secret is safe with me. Me: What’s your first impression of Key West? P & J: We thought it would be more tropical. Me: What made you come wait in line to get your picture taken in front of a rock? (Once again, I’ve never been there in 27 years.) P & J: To prove we were here. Me: Do you have a track record of lying about places you’ve been as to require documented proof? P & J: It just seemed like a fun thing to do. Me: Was it? P & J: It’s okay. Me: What’s your favorite potato chips? P & J: Why would you ask that? Me: Just answer the question, it’s important. P & J: BBQ Pringles. #BarTabMag

25

Me: Cool, thanks. What would you tell your friends about visiting Key West? P & J: People here are lucky to live in a place this funky. It must not be easy with things being so expensive. We would like to come back and stay for a week to explore the island and it’s history more. Also, we weren’t expecting this many homeless people or chickens roaming around everywhere. Or the sheer amount of bars. All in all we like it. Me: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen? P & J: A lady with orange hair who asked us for money to buy fuel for her spaceship so she could get back to her people. Me: Let me guess, her spaceship runs on Lucky Charms cereal? P & J: How did you know? Me: She’s the former mayor. When was the last time you were drunk? P & J: We are drunk now. Me: Cool. Do you have any ideas on how Key West could be more fun? P & J: Maybe you could get a go kart track and mini golf or something.

Me: We used to have both, but because of multiple drunken go kart accidents, many mine, they decided to build condos there instead. As my mom used to say, “This is why we can’t have nice things.” Who is getting all those mildly dirty t-shirts? P & J: Kids and friends. Me: They should get a lot of use out of them back home. I then mentioned that the southernmost point was actually a little ways down the street. Me: Do you feel cheated. Would you like to go there? P & J: We gotta get back to the ship for tuxedo night. Far be it from me to get in the way of tuxedo night. I thanked them for their time and tried to collect my thoughts on my day at the Southernmost Point. Once again, for 45 minutes. I realized I enjoyed the joy people felt just being at a place I thought was boring. Then realized that when I go on vacation, I also go to all the recommended tourist traps and usually love them.

In summation, (yes, there is finally one) the reason that I’d never been to the Southernmost Point before was: A) I was too lazy. B) No interest. C) I have to pay to park. And D) It’s a rock. I also learned that the history of this town is a big part of it’s charm. And even though it’s just a big rock, not even in the correct location, it’s the single most recognizable slice of Key West. And, now, means something to me. I’m glad tourists enjoy our island and all the weird attractions it offers. I’m gonna try to remember to visit the Southernmost Point from time to time; if i can find free parking. I’d rather be broke here than rich somewhere else. I think? Bill Hoebee is on weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, ‘Hoebee in the Afternoon’ on WAIL 99.5 & 103.1 FM. Listen live at iHeartRadio & Wail995.com. See Hoebee drinking all over town on KeysTV Florida’s Nightlife online & channel 24, 7 days a week at 7pm & midnight.

DJ Sanaris

Mary Ellen’s / Dante’s / Sloppy Joe’s Full name, originally from?

Sanaris Anthevius Peacock. I’m originally from Cordele, Georgia, a little town, southwest Georgia. How long have you been in Key West?

I have been in Key West as of December [2018] for 16 years. Where did you get your start DJing?

My start DJing was at Sloppy Joe’s. Never DJ’d before. That was back in 2005. I was just a party animal at 21 years old, just going out & having a great time. They saw me & said, ‘Hey, we’ve got an opening. Think you want to DJ?’ And that’s how the legend started. [laughs] What other jobs did you have before DJing?

If you can believe it, I was in the navy. I was a Crypty. I dealt with counternarcotics, when I worked down here at JIATF-South. Crypty /kriptē/ - Navy lingo. A cryptologist - CTT.

How do you get a lame crowd going?

Well, you try to play something that you know everybody knows. I like to play whatever the popular song is that everybody knows at that time. Sometimes you’ve got to get out there & dance with them. You do what you’ve got to do! What the strangest musical requests you’ve ever had?

Oh, man! The strangest request that actually worked & I just couldn’t believe it. It was Beer Barrel Polka; it was at a wedding. Like somebody asked for polka at a bar & it worked! Everybody started doing the dance & hooking arms & singing the song.

Is it true that the DJ is a god?

[laughs] No, some of us like to think we’re gods, man. But we’re here to please the people. We’re here for them. If people want to treat us like gods, hey I’ll take that! How do you deal with a crazy bridesmaid?

Very carefully [laughs] ...oh, very carefully. I tend to end up letting them having it, because if it’s a crazy bridesmaid, she’s going to go out there & do something on the dance floor & that’s going to make people want to come. It depends on the song, but usually if I see that she really wants to have a good time & she’s going to bring it. I’ll take the request, no problem. How can someone get a hold of you for a private event?

They can reach me through SoundWave[KeyWest.com]. That is the company I work with, with an amazing guy named Jimmy Cooper & his beautiful wife, Joanna. You can hire me through them. You can catch DJ Sanaris in action around town at Dante’s, 951 Caroline St, Mary Ellen’s, 420 Appelrouth Ln, General Horseplay, 423 Caroline St or Sloppy Joe’s, 201 Duval St. #BarTabMag

Alex Tolmachenko @ Virgilio’s, 524 Duval St

Full name, age, originally from?

My name is Alexandrovich Tolmachenko, but everybody calls me Alex & I’m originally from Krasnodar, Russia. How did you make your way to Key West?

When I got my Visa in 2007. I had no idea what Key West was. My sister told me about it, because she’d been to the Key West couple of times. Thanks to her I’m here. I’ve been here for the last 11 years & I love it. When did you get your start behind the bar?

I started at Virgilio’s in ‘08 as a bar back, because I didn’t speak any English. So it took me about a year to learn English & I’ve been bartending since 2009. Did you had any other jobs in Key West?

How do you spend your days off?

Thursdays my day off by myself, so I just park my ass on a couch, get some beer, some fish from Russian store & just binge watch some TV shows. Sundays is laundry, grocery, cleaning, walking dogs, washing dogs & all the fun stuff. [laughs]

Originally my first job was construction & then I was a busboy & ran some food at Turtle Kraals. I did some housekeeping, because I had no other choice, there were no jobs available.

Favorite football team?

How many drinks would you guess you serve on an average Martini Monday?

Best menu items from La Trattoria & Virgilio’s menus?

On an average Monday night, in season, I would say I would do about 300 martinis a night - just me, not including the other bartenders. What’s your favorite night of the week at Virgilio’s?

Obviously Monday & I also like Wednesday because I love music on Wednesday night. I do appreciate Russ Brown & Michael Festa.

Seattle Seahawks.

How about favorite other football team?

Soccer team is Real Madrid C.F.

Hands down the veal osso buco. It’s to die for. The lamb chops & a carpaccio. We have the best carpaccio on the island. Any other shout outs or shameless plugs?

Well, I just want to say thank you to all our regulars & all my friends & for supporting us. Thank you very much for choosing Virgilio’s as your favorite spot. You can find Alex behind the bar at Virgilio’s, 524 Duval St Mon-Wed, Fri & Sat 6pm till 4am. #BarTabMag

Ashton Cullinane @ Tattoos & Scars, 512 Greene St

Full name, age, sign, originally from?

Elizabeth Ashton Cullinane, 29. I’m a Gemini & I’m from Baltimore, Maryland.

What made you make the move to Key West?

I just wanted to get out of the city for a little while & do something different. I had never been here before.

How long have you been working at Tattoos & Scars?

This will be my 4th Onesie Pub Crawl, so I think it’s been about 3 & a half years.

What’s your drink of choice?

A shot of Jameson. It’s my drink of choice but it’s not the drink that chooses me. [laughs]

The crab cake from Prime Steakhouse. I’m from Maryland, so it’s one of the few on the island I will eat.

How did the Onesie Pub Crawl come about?

Do you remember the first time you ever drank?

I put Smirnoff Ice in a McDonald’s sippy cup & walked around the mall & got drunk with my sister’s older friends.

When I lived in Baltimore a bunch of my friends & I used to go out in onesies on New Year’s Day when we were super, super hungover & just bar hop in onesies. I thought it would be a good idea to bring it down here.

How old were you?

How many people turned out last year?

Probably 12. [laughs]

I think we had a little over 300.

What’s the largest age difference between someone that you’ve hooked up with?

Can people pre-sign up for the Onesie Pub Crawl?

9 years older. I have never dated anyone younger.

Age when you first slipped the tongue into your kiss?

I would say maybe 12.

Right after that day at the mall?

Yeah. I’m pretty sure it was the same day. [laughs]

34

What’s your go-to restaurant/dish in Key West?

#BarTabMag

No, we do not do pre-sign up. You have to come the day of.

What time should people get here?

We open at noon. So you should get here Sunday, January 27th at noon, because we have a limited amount of spots & the pub crawl starts at 2pm. Ashton slings drinks at Tattoos & Scars, 512 Greene St, Wed 12-7pm, Thurs & Fri 7-10p & Sat 7pm-4am.
