Key West Sights

(AND SOUNDS, AND SMELLS) TO MAKE YOU SMILE

by Leigh Pujado The Bayview Park Skeletons You haven’t really experienced the real Key West until you’ve seen the plastic skeletons in the yard of the home at the corner of Virginia and Pearl. Sometimes staged in bikinis with cocktails atop chaise lounges, and at each holiday, sporting appropriately themed attire, these festive skeletons overlook Bayview Park in their seasonal finest. Their recent Easter ensemble was particularly alluring. I can’t wait to see what they’ll be wearing for the Fourth of July! The Life is Too Short Bus Those kids at Ibis Bay Resort sure know how to have a good time. (Just read their witty marquee next time you are sitting at the light at Roosevelt and Kennedy.) A few years back they bought an authentic “short bus,” transformed it from school bus-yellow to Island-y white, painted “Life is Too Short Bus” boldly on its exterior, and now use it to ferry their hotel guests around the rock. They took an iconic, politically incorrect object and made it endearing. If only we all could catch a ride on the Life is Too Short Bus! And just across from Ibis Bay.... The Liberty Tax Guy Up until April 15th, surely you saw him at the corner of North Roosevelt and Kennedy, clad in a cheap Statue of Liberty 18

costume, beaming, twirling his sign, and waving to our island drivers. To date, I believe him to be the happiest guy in Key West, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he was working one of the shittiest jobs in town, (save for roofing in the summertime and liquid waste removal for boats and trailers.) Does he know something that the rest of us do not? Is he simply happy to be living and working in Key West? I don’t know. Maybe he’s just on mushrooms. The Scent of El Siboney There’s always a garlic scented wind blowing down Catherine Street. Ride your bike by the island’s mainstay Cuban restaurant at Catherine and Grinnell and you will be bowled over by the smell. Stop at the stop sign, inhale deeply through your nose and whisper, “Mmmmmm, skirt steak, black beans and plantains!” The Geriatric Sex Angel You’ve likely seem him at your favorite downtown watering hole. He’s bald, and tan with sagging skin and he’s always wearing some sort of sex shop style harness, wings, a thong, a halo, and high heels. In most towns, his appearance would prompt a call to the police or the local mental hospital. Here, everyone waves with glee as he saunters in while the bartender stands ready with his preferred cocktail.

Painted Vehicles Michael Shields and Carol Tedesco’s floral Miata, Michael Blades and Kathy Kilroy’s tropical green Honda, Dan Linehan’s sharpie marker covered van, the “Don’t Dredge on Me” barnacle encrusted pick up truck, and anyone who is lucky enough to still have a Captain Outrageous painted bicycle. Painted vehicles are the epitome of Island Cool. Dink and Guido atop Bar Stools at Salute Two of my favorite local raconteurs, you can find them often at Salute for happy hour. Ask them about the old days of Key West. Unlike many long timers who bemoan change and remain here bitching about how much everything sucks now, Guido and Dink will actually entertain you with a tale of Key West past. Ask Dink how he got his nickname. Ask Guido about the heyday of The Conch Flyer. Dogs in Bicycle baskets This might just be my favorite Key West site. Just this morning I saw two Pugs nestled in a rear basket, merrily cruising up United Street. They were like a rolling advertisement for bike baskets AND for Pugs. I tried to put my cat in my bike basket once, but it wasn’t nearly as cute and he definitely didn’t enjoy the experience. Perhaps some enterprising young person could start a dog sharing rental service so that everyone can experience the joy of carting pups around on two wheels.

David Sloan books on local shelves Whether it’s at Island Books, or the checkout lane of Walgreens, Sloan’s books on display always make me smile. And I can’t help but agree with his titles: Yes, you should quit your job and move to Key West. Yes, Iguanas ARE assholes! Big, fat, whiffs of Night Blooming Jasmine The first time I smelled it was in the summer of 1999. I was on my first evening jog through Old Town and this incredible, floral scented wind hit me with such force on William Street. I spun around to try to discern where it was coming from and nearly got hit by a scooter. The funny thing about Night Blooming Jasmine is you seldom see it. You simply smell it, and smell and smell and inhale it until you are positively drunk on its scent. Fleming Street near the library has some wonderful surprise pockets of it, as does Frances street off the cemetery. Sniff, and savor! Mr. Chapman and his Disco Bike Until recently, Mr. Chapman was a Duval Street staple, peddling his signature speaker-laden tricycle, belting out anything from Rick James, to Donna Summer, to the Commodores. I’m not certain where he ended up, but he is sorely missed. No one could resist smiling at his rolling musical spectacle.

ROBOT BARTENDERS HUMAN BARTENDERS by David Sloan

W

ith automation moving forward at a record pace, Key West & the Florida Keys are destined to see new technologies including self-driving cars, automated fast food kiosks & machines taking over the jobs that people once did. The most feared of these technologies is a robot bartender. Dozens of prototypes have been developed for both home & commercial use, & in 2015, a fully automated “Bionic Bar” opened on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas. It is only a matter of time before this technology reaches Duval Street, so we decided to test man against machine in a BarTab magazine Smack-Down : Robot Bartender vs Human Bartender.

FRIENDLINESS

Robot Bartender : Greets you with prompt from touch screen & voice similar to Alexa or Siri. Refuses to make small talk. Clearly does not want to sleep with you. Human Bartender : Welcomes you to the bar & smiles. Takes your drink order & makes small talk while preparing your drink. No way they will sleep with you, but you still think you have a chance. Advantage : Human Bartender 24

BarTabMag.com

DRINK QUALITY

APPEARANCE

Robot Bartender : Drink is perfectly mixed to pre-specified proportions based on algorithms intended to maximize bar profits.

Robot Bartender : Sleek, polished metal accompanied by plastic tubing, lighting kits & an interactive touchscreen.

Human Bartender : Drink proportions are eyeballed based on years of behind-bar experience, with a little extra liquor thrown in if you are nice, known, or appear to be a good tipper.

Human Bartender : Impeccably groomed with crisp, pressed outfit or uniform & only slight signs of a lingering hangover from the previous night.

Advantage : Human Bartender

LEGAL MATTERS Robot Bartender : Will not tell you where to score drugs. Prevents over-serving by calculating your blood alcohol content based on pre-programmed algorithms. Human Bartender : Will not tell you where to score drugs. Prevents over-serving by cutting you off after you throw up down your sleeve. Advantage : Human Bartender

Advantage : Human Bartender

TIPPING Robot Bartender : Does not expect or accept tips for their services. Does not pay rent or have bills. Human Bartender : Expects one dollar for each drink served or 20% of your check total, whichever is greater. Pays high rent & bills with your tips. Advantage : Robot Bartender

WINNER Human Bartender beats out Robot Bartender 4:1. Congratulations humans. You can keep your jobs... for now.

What is it that pulls so many expats to Bali, Indonesia? Coming to visit a new exotic culture. A feeling of fulfillment & life sucking you in. I personally am not holding back - & many don't. Bali is full of talented people from all over the world. Going there with high entrepreneurial spirit while getting to bask in the sun all day. Maybe you surf. Maybe you do yoga. But at the end of the day you head to the beach & grab a drink. Bintang is the beer of choice in Bali which means ‘star’ in Indonesian. A pale lager that comes in at just under 5% ABV. The beer dates back to 1929 & was founded in Holland. Indonesia at the time was a Dutch colony, but after the Second World War, Heineken stopped being a technical advisor of the beer & then prohibited the use of the Heineken name. So if you think your Bintang taste similar to a Heineken, you most certainly would be correct. In 1967 Heineken resumed operations of the Bintang brewery from the Indonesian Government, but expect a small culture uniqueness to the taste from the decades of Indonesian influence. Bali has two famous beach fronts, Kuta & Seminyak, which is full of restaurants that extend out towards the water. The popular bean bag chairs & iconic cloth umbrellas in many colors bring rich character to the scene. Take a seat anywhere & a server will bring you a menu. Most places play live music. Almost all of them you will find a small wooden stage for a band to play while the sun goes down & continue on into the night. Double Six Hotel is the most popular area where you can find an array of beverages & fresh seafood dishes.. If you are looking for something quieter I would suggest heading south along the beach toward the airport. The best beach I've been to on our planet this far is about a half hour away & very quiet, next to the Uluwatu Temple. It is called Suluban Beach & is absolutely stunning. 26

@ Dante’s & The Lazy Gecko Full name, age, originally from?

James Thomas Kenny III, 32. I’m originally from Miami. How long have you been in Key West?

Nine years now, like four months ago. How did you start bartending?

I hung out at a place called Guy Harvey’s. Nobody showed up that day at work, & the GM asked me, ‘Will you bartend?’ I was like, I don’t even know how to make a margarita, dude. I don’t know what I’m doing. He forced me to do it. I ended up sticking with it. Where are you slinging drinks these days.

Most of the time I’m at Dante’s. Usually I don’t get there until about 4pm. Wednesdays & Fridays I’m at The Lazy Gecko’s back bar. It’s a nice local spot just to hang out & get away from the world. How would you characterize your regulars?

Any tattoos?

No. No, tattoos. Didn’t you get tats in your Key West fraternity?

We got temporary tattoos, hanna tattoos on our backs. We weren’t manly enough to get actual tattoos. DIK was way better than AKB apparently. How do you unwind on your days off?

I usually go on the boat, or play volleyball. I play a lot of volleyball.

Regular. Same exact people I see every Wednesday & Friday. Then Dante’s is where you get your tourists. Then at night all the regulars are coming back in. All your fishermen, all your divers & stuff like that. So it’s a pretty cool little diverse thing.

[laughs] Fuck no. That’s Dave Strobele that would get that thing.

What’s the last thing you’ve binge watched on demand?

What’s the secret to life?

Fuck, what is it called? I watched The Originals, I believe is what it’s called. I watched it for like three days straight of just doing absolutely nothing watching that.

Is your male romper on the way yet?

Just be happy. Don’t worry about shit. James works at Dante’s, 951 Caroline St & The Back Bar @ The Lazy Gecko, 203 Duval St. BarTabMag.com

www.MarjoryLee.com Full name, originally from, favorite bar cord?

Marjory Lee Mitchell, Fripp Island, SC, C sharp minor. How long have you been strumming the guitar?

Since I was eight. My biological father played, so I’d always wanted to play since I was little. Was it love at first pluck?

For me probably, not for the people around me. I was really good at playing two strings. I’d be like, ‘Doesn’t this sound awesome?’

Who are your biggest influences in life and/or music?

How long have you been a full time musician?

Do you get Alanis Morissette much?

I started doing gigs I when I was 16. Then my summers when I was in college & full time once I was done with college. Have you ever had a non-musician job to pay bills?

Absolutely. Substitute teaching, selling undercover audio & video surveillance to narcotics units. Driving a non emergency transport vehicle. How did you make your way down to Key West?

I’ve been coming down here with my family since I was younger. I first got on stage down here when I was 16 with John Solinski at Irish Kevin’s. Then I came down May 2016, & I decided I was going to stick around for a while. Describe your style in a few words. 

Soulful, bluesy. Just tell people I play trip-hop. They’d be like, ‘Really? What does that sound like?’ 34

BarTabMag.com

Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire, Ella Fitzgerald. Yes. Just a little bit.

What’s your typical process to write a song?

Erratic. It could start with a melody, it could start with a guitar riff. I do a lot of mumble tracks, & figure out how I want something to sound, & sometimes I’ll fill in that way. Do you tend to play solo or with people around town?

Solo gigs predominantly. I’ll be at Green Room, or Sunset Pier solo. Then when I play Sloppy Joe’s I do a trio with Randy Morrow & Andy Westcott. Is there anybody in town that you want to play with?

Everybody. It’s just a matter of time.

Do yourself a favor & go see Marjory Lee while you’re in Key West. She plays Fridays @ Sunset Pier, 0 Duval, she can also be seen solo at The Green Room or at Sloppy Joe’s with her trio.

DEAR DAD.

by Bill Hoebee As your landmark 80th birthday has recently passed, I thought I’d drop you a little note to tell you how much I love & appreciate you. When we are on the phone or in person, we spend most of the time making each other laugh, so maybe I’ve never properly thanked you for always being there, or apologized for some of the monstrous things I did in my youth. So, I figured I’d do it now, just so you know I remember. I’m sorry I sold tickets to watch you hurl the only time I ever saw you drunk. I’m sorry about the time you had to drive us home approximately 120 mph when I begged you to take us apple picking & you had too much apple cider. Hey, at least I lied to everyone when I said you made it to the bathroom before the ‘incident.’ I’m mostly sorry that I never fail to bring it up at family gathering ever since. I’m sorry that I made you give me my first spanking after the incident with my sister’s toothbrush. As I remember you did give me a chance to avoid an ass whipping if I told you the truth about it. I didn’t. But did learn a valuable lesson about what not to do with peoples toothbrushes. I’m sorry about the time that you had to leave work to pick me up at the Jungle Habitat theme park after I shot my boss in the leg with a 52

tranquilizer dart. I still think it was their fault for sending me into the woods at 14 years-old to try & catch an escaped llama. I heard a noise, pulled the trigger, and thanks for getting those pesky attempted murder charges dropped. I’m sorry about that semester or two of college I spent studying the social & cultural effects of the movie Animal House on fellow students. I’m sorry about all the times I didn’t put your tools back in the right place (your pet peeve) & also for not paying attention when you tried to teach me how to do basic cars repairs - forcing you to do it for me... thanks. I’m especially sorry about all the times you’ve lost sleep worrying about my sanity & general well being. I didn’t mean it. I’m just weird, ya know? I’d also like to thank you for so many things & the following are just a few. Thanks for spending so many Saturday afternoons when I was very young taking me all over town to look for my imaginary friend. What a sign of things to come, huh? continued on page 55

Thanks for ‘saving’ me the day I went along on your short lived bread delivery route when a man jumped in to steal the van with me inside. I remember how relieved I was when you caught up with the truck, because the idiot couldn’t drive a stick shift & you beat him like a dirty rug. Although if you hadn’t caught up with us, I’m pretty sure I would have annoyed the shit out of him with my unending barrage of crazy questions & inane comments. Thanks for teaching me to be a good athlete, a long time ago, & being at pretty much every game and practice I ever had, even though I’m sure you had better things to do. Thanks for driving down to college & picking me up after I tore up my ankle playing football so I could get my operation & recover at home. And thanks for not killing me when all my friends came over during the day on my second day home from the hospital & having a huge party, eating all your tropical fish & burning up a portion of the new carpet. Thanks for always making me and my friends laugh &, along with mom, feeding half the neighborhood on any given night. Thanks for always making me work for stuff. Thanks for going to all those nightclubs & watching my bands during my ‘rockstar phase.’ Thanks for not laughing when I told you I didn’t need a ‘regular job,’ because I was sure I was going to be a star any day now. Thanks for being so good at your job that we always had everything we needed & yet still made

time to spend with mom & us. Its hard to fathom as a child what a good father is. In most cases kids only know what they grow up with. As I’ve grown & seen family & friends turn into fathers themselves, & it makes me happy to see guys I know with their kids & say to myself, ‘those kids are lucky to have this guy as a dad.’ On the other side, I’ve also seen many who possessed the knowledge of how to make a kid, but not know how to take care of one. The difference is glaring. Dad I’ve grown to appreciate you more & more as the years go by. My heart goes out to those who didn’t have good parents around during their childhood. It’s an experience that has helped me in every phase of life. I also thanks you for ‘breaking the cycle’ & being such a good guy after growing up with such a brutal father. I respect the way you looked after your younger brothers & sister when they needed you. The fact that you still have so many friends who visit & call is a testimony to the man you are. You served your country at war, took great care of your family & still found time to have fun & help people less fortunate. For these reasons & so many others, I’m proud to say that you are my dad. But the thing I want to thank you most for is marrying my mother, & being there for my big sister & brother & my nieces & nephews. So, for everything I’ve mentioned & so much more. Thanks, Dad. P.S. My Dad once pretended to believe me when I came home past curfew & pretended I was sleepwalking. You Rock. BarTabMag.com
