ANCIENT FERTILITY STATUE DISCOVERED IN KEY WEST BAR KEY WEST, Fla. — Eight years of sudden & unexpected pregnancies plaguing the island of Key West have been traced to an unassuming yet powerful object in the island’s very own Green Parrot Bar. The object in question was believed to be a simple parrot carved from a block of wood. In fact, it is a rare fertility idol stolen from the Lobi Tribe in the Ghana region of Africa. “A guy brought it into the bar about 8 years ago,” says Green Parrot owner John Vagnoni. “He said he was out fishing & found it floating in the ocean. He knew right away it belonged here so we built a perch for it behind the bar & left it to watch over things. We had no idea about the powers associated with it.” But according to authorities, the powerful idol started its journey 3 years earlier when it went missing off the coast of Africa. “The ngono ndege idol was used in the Lobi people’s fertility rituals for over 100 years,” said African Antiquities Administrator Jomo Adisa. “The statute was taken by an illegal band of tomb raiders who took the fertility god to a waiting ship where it was to be sent to the United States & sold to a collector with Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. The ship never made it & the idol was believed lost to the sea. News of its survival is a great cause for celebration for the Lobi. Not a single male has been born to the tribe since the idol was taken.” But not everyone is celebrating, especially those who fell victim to the powers of the fertility statue & ended up unexpectedly pregnant. Pregnancies on island have increased 23% each year since the idol’s arrival with 93% of those patients having visited the Green Parrot when the idol was present. Even more shockingly, 42% of the Green Parrot’s employees who worked closest to the idol are now parents. “People always joked that it was something in the water,” said Green Parrot bartender & proud father, Beaver. “I always suspected that the root beer barrels were to blame. I touched that bird damn near every night but never imagined the power it contained.” At this time it is unknown whether the idol will be returned to the Lobi people or remain in Key West under the Finders-Keepers Law. For now, the Ngano Ndege Idol remains on display at the Green Parrot Bar. Patrons are advised to view it with extreme caution. 18

THRIVING MANATEE COMMUNITY DISCOVERED IN KEY WEST SEWER SYSTEM by David Sloan KEY WEST, Fla. — A thriving community of manatee, Trichechus Manatus, have been discovered living in deep injection wells and storm drains beneath the streets of Key West in what some environmentalists are calling, “The Miracle Under Front Street.” The first sighting occurred in 2012 when a small manatee calf was spotted by Ron Corey of Key West Public Works Department during routine maintenance of a deep injection well located near the intersections of Duval and Front Street. Corey was able to capture the animal and release off the Simonton Street docks. But in an unexpected turn, KWPW engineers have now acknowledged that as many as 32 of the herbivorous marine mammals call the drains of Key West home in 2017. “Thanks to our elevation and standing water at the injection sites, the storm drains on Duval and Simonton from The Gulf to Caroline Street have become an ideal habitat for the sea cows,” said city spokesman Don Ellerson. “They drink fresh rain water and survive on French fries, conch fritters and other gutter foods that make their way down storm drains at an alarming rate. Tourists are urged not to approach the manatee. A Facebook contest giving you a chance to name one of the mammals can be found at KeyWestCity.gov. David Sloan is an author, marine mammal manager and ghost hunter. He is currently living amongst the manatees for research for his next ghost tour. For more info, visit www.HauntedKeyWest.com. 24

TRUMP ISSUES IMMIGRANT SELFIE BAN New Executive Order Hits Home in the Southernmost City WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Trump administration issued another controversial statement today that hits home in Key West. President Donald Trump will sign a new executive order next week to ban the use of ‘Selfie’ photography by immigrants effective April 1, 2017. This is particularly troubling to local Key West selfie enthusiast, and American citizen, Jayesh Mani. Jayesh has made a selfie photo with him as part of the island as the Southernmost Point or Key Lime Pie over the past year. When asked about the ban, Trump, speaking from his Mar-a-Lago Club on his 21st visit during his first 12 weeks in office, replied, “My family took the first selfies. My grandfather, Frederick Trump, who was a great, great man, took the first selfie in 1896. It was really, really great. Just great.” When pressed about the subject, Trump started screaming incoherently about wanting to see Jayesh’s birth certificate. When a local BarTab affiliate, Vincent K Montalto, informed President Trump that Jayesh was indeed an American citizen and is the ‘Selfie King’ of the Southernmost city, Trump took to Twitter and wrote, “Immigrants are stealing our selfies. Bad!” and, “In fact, new E.O., a ‘Selfie’ will be now called a ‘Trumpy’.” When word of the Tweets reached Key West, the entire island got behind Jayesh. David Sloan, Chris Shultz and Marky Pierson put together a parade that attracted an estimated 15,000 people. $250,000 was raised for the petting zoo. It will now be an annual event. When Jayesh was asked about the situation via the KeyLife Facebook group, he replied, “Yeah this is a good place. These people are my dudes. Lmfao. Amazing place!” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Dale, Jr. could not be reached for comment. 28

Vlatka Coric

@ Cowboy Bill’s, 618 Duval Street What is your full name & originally from?

Bartender Profile

My full name is Vladimira Coric. I am from Mostar, Croatia. How did you make your way to the States?

My mother & I came here a long time ago on an airplane, [laughs] I was not a boat nip. To New York City & then to Chicago. How long were you in New York & Chicago?

Oh see, now my age thing comes in. [laughs] Alright, that’s a fair point. How did you end up in Key West?

I was married at the time. It started off as a two week vacation, & we never went back. What was the food like growing up in Croatia?

I remember when I was a little kid making cheese. You would have your lamb, your cow, you pig, & chickens of course. You would kill a lamb on Easter. You would skin it & they would wash it, & tie it up & let it dry. Once it dries, then they put the cheese in there & let the cheese ferment. You didn’t go buy things, you made your own. & then you would trade what you had with other people around the next town. What, food & beverage wise, is Croatia known for?

Wine, beer, & slivovitz, which is plum brandy.

So how does a girl from Croatia end up at a cowboy bar? 

Cowboy Bill is the greatest boss ever. I was offered a job opportunity & I took it.

What’s your favorite thing going on at Cowboy Bills?

I like Cowboy Bill’s for many reasons. It’s a complex, so you can come & do anything. You can listen to somebody play live. On Wednesday nights you can enjoy the sexy bull riding contest. The sports bar you can watch any game. & then you can watch girls dance in lingerie in the back bar. & we have Mexican food from Salsa Loca. So you have everything here. How many bars here at Cowboy Bills & which is your favorite?

The inside, dance bar. The front sports bar, the side bar & the outside bar. So four bars. I like the dance bar most. Do you have a signature cocktail?

Yes, it’s called V’s Punch. It’s rum punch, with a little bit of an island glitch to it. It’s delicious. Drink of choice when you’re sitting at the bar?

I’m a beer drinker. Microbreweries.

Vlatka works Mon-Sat nights at Cowboy Bill’s, 618 Duval St. We here there’s a reward for anyone that can get her on the bull! BarTabMag.com

Beyond the Bar BarTab business feature

Captain School Key West What are your full names?

K: Kimberly Teal Woods & Mark Louie Woods. How did you two meet?

K: [laughs] I was putting in the WiFi in at Stock Island Marina Village, & he was the dock master. When did you get to Key West?

K: My first stint was ’91, but I bought my home in 2001. M: 2004, I just sailed in on a boat. When did you start Captain School Key West?

M: We started the Captain School 4 years ago. I took an early retirement from the college & we decided that we needed a physical school here. Were you doing something similar at the college?

M: Yeah, for the last 8 years before that, I offered a marine science or engineering program that taught captains training & some basic seamanship. Where is your school located?

K: It’s located in Robbie’s Boatyard, on Stock Island. How many courses do you offer?

M: Right now we are offering 12 different courses. People come to us for a specific reason. It’s either to get their initial license or they’re trying to grow their resume as far as a charter captain or a captain who’s going to do some offshore travel. 34

BarTabMag.com

What’s the oldest & youngest student that you’ve taught?

M: The oldest student is 86. I think he’s getting ready to hit 87. & he’s still active. Our youngest student, as a school, is an 18 years-old. How about your favorite watering holes?

K: Well, the Green Parrot for sound check, Smoking Tuna & Schooner Wharf. Do you two still get on the water for recreation or is it all business these days?

M: Oh no, we get as much water as we can get. K: We live on the water, we play on the water, & we work on the water. We just got back from Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. With over 25 years experience between them, Mark & Kimi can teach you how to navigate the waters of Key West or start your new career. Visit CaptainSchoolKeyWest.com for more info.

Dave Zingg @ the Blue Macaw, 804 Whitehead Full name, originally from, chef coat size?

Chef de

PROFILE

My name is David Edward Zingg. I’m from Palm Springs, California & I wear a large chef coat.

How did you end up in Key West?

I got to Key West 3 years ago by happenstance. I hitchhiked from Portland, Oregon to California then from California to Florida. I landed in Panama City Beach for 3 months & then hitch hiked here.

How did you learn your chops?

I move around a lot. Sometimes its 3 months, sometimes its 9 months. Every time I move I always work in a kitchen, a new chef, a new style of cooking, new techniques. And every place I’ve moved there’s a different culture.

Describe your food preparation style.

Blue Macaw’s dinner. Our lunch, our brunch & our breakfast is our money-maker, but we just feel that dinner could just be revamped. We’re doing a new menu, coming out sometime next month. After that, I want to do 7 specials every day & just keep it fresh, keep it new.

Any signature dishes we should be on the lookout for?

I have a blackened tuna with squid ink teriyaki, an apple slaw with curried sweet potato puree on the new menu.

Some things I order ahead of time, like lamb or some specialty item. But other than that, I do all my food on the fly. I come in, I talk to my guys who worked the morning, the lunch, & they let me know what we have leftover, what fish we got in, & then I just create as I go.

Your favorite protein to work with?

How has the transition been coming to the Blue Macaw?

[laughs] My shameless plug would be to my buddy Porkchop. Tell him that I miss him.

It’s very exciting. I have been making small adjustments here & there, not trying to go crazy & change everything at once. One step at a time. But everything’s really exciting. My crew’s really excited.

36

What’s in store for the Blue Macaw?

BarTabMag.com

Hmm, that’s a good one. I would have to say yellowtail snapper. It’s just very easy. It’s a fast pickup. It’s very thin & light, so cooking time it only takes two to three minutes.

Any other shout outs or shameless plugs?

The Blue Macaw is located at 804 Whitehead St & boasts the largest bloody Mary bar in the Keys, live music all day & next month stop in to taste Chef Zingg’s new dinner menu.

PAT LONERGAN’S VOICE COMING AS OPTION TO iPHONE’S ROAD NAVIGATION Cupertino, CA. - Pat ‘the Goon’ Lonergan’s voice will be coming to iPhone’s Road Navigation, a spokesman for the company confirmed this week. The option will be introduced in the spring of 2017. BarTab affiliate, Bill Hoebee, recently had the opportunity to test drive the app. When asked about the experience, Hoebee said, “It was just like having Pat in the car with you.” The app, named Get-There, has a few bugs, Hoebee said. When trying to get to a specific location you would get a lot of ‘inaudible grumbling’ and then be told to, “Turn right back there. Okay, make a U-turn.” It would also point out landmarks out of the blue and unsolicited. Saying things like, “Hey, there’s a liquor store right up here on the right [Inaudible grumbling]. You just passed it. Where are you going?”, when passing certain establishments around Key West. “There are some glitches which still need to be worked out with the system,” Craig Federighi Apple’s SVP, of Software Engineering said. “We can’t quite figure out how to get the programming to stop talking about the Chicago Cubs’ World Series Championship.” But, Federighi seems optimistic they’ll be able to solve the an problems with the app before its launch in the Fall of 2017. “Our biggest fear is that the Cubs will win back-to-back championships. At which point the project may be shelved indefinitely.” When ask to comment on the application, Lonergan said, “[Inaudible grumbling].” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. 50
