by Leigh Pujado There seems to be an exodus afoot here in the Keys. After a major hurricane which tanks the local economy, a spike in residents moving away is to be expected. But many people, my friends in particular, seem to be abandoning ship in droves. I am running out of friends, and more are threatening to go. Most importantly, I fear many of the cool people who make this island wonderfully weird are fleeing for the Mainland, leaving us to reckon with the blue hairs, the uber wealthy, and the degenerates.

So, You Want to Leave the Rock?

Yes, there’s always Facebook, but I’m looking for a warm body to have a live conversation with, to invite to my home for a dinner party, to share a bottle of wine with at Vinos, and to join me at the theatre. At this rate, I will be 18

#BarTabMag

fresh out of friends by sometime next year and forced to get chummy with wealthy snowbirds and retirees. Don’t get me wrong, I genuinely like many of our local snowbirds and retirees, but they are not my contemporaries, and I can only chat for so long about interior design and how difficult it is to get good help these days.

Before we lose anyone else, I propose we require all residents desiring to move off island to apply for permanent leave. If you are contemplating such a move, fill out this application, camera copy it, and email it to me at: cleighpujado@gmail.com The professional staff here at BarTab magazine will review your application and decide if we can afford to let you go, or if you simply must stay.

APPLICATION TO PERMANENTLY LEAVE KEY WEST Name ..................................................................... Number of years as KW resident ......................... Which of the following statements best describes your biggest reason for wanting to leave Key West: It’s just too darn expensive to live here. I cannot find a good job with a good salary here. I cannot find a suitable romantic partner. I found too many romantic partners and now no one else wants to date me. I miss the snow! At this point in my life, I need to be near high quality medical care. At this point in my life, I need a Whole Foods and a freakin’ Target! I’m bored. Other: ................................................................... Which best describes your housing situation right now in Key West: I own several homes, one happens to be in Key West. I own my home and am paying my silly mortgage on time.

I own a home (barely) and am in debt up to my armpits. I rent my own pricey apartment. I have a lousy roommate. I have more roommates than I can count. This couch I’ve been living on sucks! (**If you answered (a), would you be willing to rent out your home at a reasonable price to someone who answered (c), (d), (e), (f), or (g)?) Which of the following best describes how and where you spend your days on island: Working at my job. Sitting on this barstool and drinking like it’s my job. Telling the gardener what needs to be done and ordering $30,000 rugs from Archeo. Volunteering, walking with friends, enjoying lunch at local eateries, and other things retired folks enjoy. Have you seriously contemplated whether or not you are suitable for Mainland life after your time in Key West? Yes. No. Suitable? Does this mean I would have to wear a suit on the Mainland? 19

How do you feel about gridlock, strip malls, big box stores, and winter? I love all that crap! Oh shit! I didn’t even think about those. If I can eat my Chick-fil-A while sitting in traffic from the comfort of my fancy car, atop heated seats, while waiting to go to Costco, then I’m cool. Umm, what exactly do you mean by “winter”? Other than gridlock, strip malls, big box stores and winter, what would your prospective new town have that Key West is lacking? (circle all that apply) Suitable romantic partners A Two Bedroom/One Bath for way less than $900,000 Mountains Sports or Concert Arenas Smog Quality schools and universities Chick-fil-A Do you believe your time in Key West has made you a better person or a lesser person? Better. Lesser. None of your business. 20

Which of the following best characterizes your contribution to this island community: I am one of the weirdos who make Key West delightful. I’ve donated a hefty amount of money to local charitable causes. I’ve spent a hefty amount of money in Key West bars. As a business owner or employee, I am a positive part of the professional fabric of this community.

Imagine there’s a going away party for you at Bobby’s Monkey Bar. Which song would you sing karaoke to as a tribute to your time on this island? I would totally belt “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston style. Dirty Dancing’s party ender, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” Bob Dylan’s, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music The Eagles “Already Gone” A more modern song than the moldy oldies that Leigh mentioned (Hint: If you answered “So Long, Farewell”, you are too gay to leave.) When describing your fondest Key West memory, which of the following are present: (check all that apply) Key West friends. The ocean. Tropical weather. Live music or theatre. Local seafood or cuisine. Copious amounts of alcohol. How do you feel about iguanas: I think they’re cute. They are invasive and they need to go.

If you were to move off island, what about Key West would you miss most? ................................................................... ................................................................... Fill in the blank: “If I never see ............................ in Key West again, it will be too soon!” (Please don’t answer “Leigh’s BarTab column.” That’s just mean.) Remember- Please camera copy and email your application to: cleighpujado@gmail.com Thank You! #BarTabMag

JOHN GALLO @ Mary Ellen’s Bar, 420 Appelrouth Ln Full name, from, years in Key West?

John Joseph Gallo, everybody calls me Gallo. I am from Hackensack, New Jersey & I’ve been in Key West 12 years as of February 1st, [2018]. What brought you here?

I was working as a bartender up in New Jersey & one day the owner came in & said, ‘We sold the place, they’re turning it into a strip club.’ I didn’t see a career in stripping, so I figure it was time to move to Key West. Its 5 o’clock on Friday, where are you?

Sleeping, definitely sleeping. [Laughing] What’s your sleep schedule like these days?

I usually get home from work around 6am. I try to unwind & I probably go to sleep somewhere around 10 or 11am. Then I wake up around 7 o’clock at night. Bucket list vaca destination?

I’ve always wanted to go to Turks & Caicos & I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland. What do you have against sleeves?

[Laughing] A couple years back I was getting tattoos it seemed like every other weekend. I wanted to show them, so I started cutting the sleeves off my t-shirts. That combined with 8 months a year of all the sun down here, I just stuck with it. It became a running gag with my buddies. A kind of a signature thing for me.

Do you know how many tattoos you have or is it kind of muddled at this point.

It’s a little muddled, but it’s a little over 28, I think. Best menu item at Mary Ellen’s? Signature drink?

Buffalo chicken sandwich. Jameson, always Jameson. Is there anything, perhaps secretly, that you’re the best at?

It’s not a secret, but not wearing sleeves, I’m obviously the best at that. Any other shout-outs or plugs?

To the crew at Mary Ellen’s. Chris Schultz [owner]. He’s been like a brother to me for 12 years. I appreciate him taking a chance on me when he could have went a safer route. Courtney, who’s my work wife on Fridays & Saturdays. She turned me into a much better bartender. & my regular customers. I thank you for coming back all the time & having fun with me. You can find John behind the bar at Mary Ellen’s, 420 Appelrouth Ln Wed-Sat 10p-4a. He’s also been spotted at 22&Co, 218 Duval St on Tues nights. #BarTabMag

CHRIS TOLER @ Willie T’s, 525 Duval St Name, age, years in Key West?

Chris Toler. 31 years old. I was born here, raised in Colorado, & then came back here around ‘06 & been to & from since. How long have you been a full time musician?

Since July 9, 2010. I got my first job on Holland America Cruise Ships. It’s like for the real old, old, old people. [laughs] How else have you paid the bills?

I was a carpenter growing up for my father. At 18 years old I left my hometown, where I went to high school. I did anything to pay the bills, man, that was legal, pretty much. How long have you been playing?

I started playing guitar senior year of high school. I was real big into football, had a D2 scholarship in Colorado. I blew my knee out, so I picked up a guitar just for shits & grins. I actually got expelled from school ‘cus I was getting in trouble & my teacher bought me a guitar, put me in guitar class ‘cus I needed extra credits. Go Ms. Miller. Does the process that you take a song through have a name or is just something you do?

It’s just the looper. It allows one person to elevate the sound into a band type of scenario, where you get the percussion, you get the rhythm, you get lead & you can get some ear candy from like vocal harmonies & stuff with one microphone & one guitar.

How long does it take you before playing a new song in public? 

I’m shameless dude. I would make songs up on the spot at the gig. [laughs] If a little Cognac gets involved. That’s a fact.

Describe your singing style in five words.

Acoustic, soul, poppy jazz type stuff.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Definitely John Mayer, Anthony Hamilton, Brian McKnight & Tupac. Macklemore. Talib Kweli, he’s an underground rapper that’s just a phenomenal lyricist. If money was no object, where would you go tomorrow?

Are there stipulations to this? Do I get to bring my family? My peeps? Money’s no object? I’m a billionaire? Ah man, I’m takin the fam-dammy-wammy. I’d take them to Greece first & then we’d go to Australia. Anything else you want to say to our readers?

Man, just keep checking out the live music scene in Key West. We got new talent coming into town all the time, so just keep the artists thriving, because we feed off of locals’ energy for sure. Chris Toler is on the Duval Street-side stage at Willie T’s, 525 Duval St. Willie T’s Mon-Wed & Sat 9:30p-close. #BarTabMag

Henry Peter Christian, age 42, I’m originally from Massachusetts, raised in New York. What brought you to Key West?

The appealing nature of the Florida Keys. Running a small kitchen in a little restaurant. The tight knit community & being able to take my relations of fresh heirloom vegetable mindset of farm-to-table. Who initially got you interested in chefing?

That would be my mother & my grandfather. My grandfather had a house up in Massachusetts where he would always pull me up into the garden. My mom, being a single parent of 3 kids, & me being the oldest, I started making dinners & it just kept going from there. Have you had any other jobs outside of food & beverage?

I’ve been in this industry my entire life. I did a small stint packing at a supply store, for a party shop, but that’s about it. Other than that, this is my entire life. Eating at the Tuna for the first time, what do you suggest?

The raw bar. You get to sit down in front of the chef in an intimate setting. It’s an experience you’re not going to get anywhere else. Most meet & greets between chefs & diners, happen in a 4 or 5 minute conversation. They’d run out to the dining room, shake your hand & are pressed for time & run back to the kitchen. The raw bar is my station. I stand there 5 days a week, 5p to close. I talk to you, you ask your questions. There’s an intimacy level that usually is not offered. The entire

menu is available. You can order off the menu, you can order off the craft raw bar. Come to the raw bar, ask me as many questions as you want. It’s pretty freaking awesome. What other ideas do you have for the menu at Smokin’ Tuna?

We’ve got a lot of great ideas. First was to revamp the raw bar, develop its own personality. Next step is the menu, & you’re going to see that change in the next 2-3 weeks. The Tuna has been here for 6 years & we’re going to allow that personality bleed into the menu. The next step is going to be weekend brunch & we’re going to do it a little different. A little bit crafty. Everything we do is going to have an honest farm to table flair to it & is going to be just a lot of fun, a lot of great quality food. What’s your drink of choice?

Beer. I’m a dark guy. I like Guinness, anything from ambers & up. If you’re looking for a unique night out, this is it. Chef Henry mans the raw bar @ Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles St every Thur-Mon @ 5pm- late.

Ask Hoebee, part 4 by Bill Hoebee

An advice column, if you feel you need advice from a grossly dysfunctional, extremely sarcastic, somewhat insensitive smart-ass with from what I’ve been told - Peter Pan syndrome.

Question: In most historic cities they have

horse drawn carriage tours, how come Key West doesn’t? Me: Two words, ‘Road Apples.’ The locals feel we have enough turds lying around on the streets already.

Question: There seems to be tons of jobs available in Key West. Are there not enough people here to fill them? Me: There’s a huge affordable housing problem, which I feel could be solved by simply… There is no solution. Question: What’s dating like in Key West? Me: After awhile the free natured sport that

is akimbo to the islands means you’re likely to have ‘dated’ every available person if you live here long enough. It’s a tad uncomfortable constantly running into people who you never called back and pretending your phone is broken.

Question: I thought I saw 70s TV icon Gary

Coleman in Key West the other day. Does he live here? Me: Unfortunately, the real Gary Coleman doesn’t live here & is actually no longer living. There is no lack of Gary Coleman impersonators in Key West however. Some of the other celebrities who call Key West home are, “the guy who played Eddie Haskell on “Leave it to Beaver,” Lamont from Sanford & Son and at least a dozen people who have been featured on the CNBC show “American Greed.” And of course the guy who can snort a bag of skittles at Mallory Square, (not official participant.)

Question: What are some of your favorite things to do in Key West? Me: I love to find money on the street-a parking meter with time left, an open seat at my favorite bars in the winter and of course, answering people questions. (Okay, the last part was a lie.) Question: When is the best time to visit Key West?

Me: When you have enough experience here

to know what you like & enough money to do it. #BarTabMag

Question: I was at the beach the other day

and a guy offered to teach me to make a palm frond bowl for ten dollars. He then went to the bathroom and never returned. Do you know who this nefarious character is? Me: I do. He calls himself ‘Bad Baxter.’ First off, he couldn’t teach a chimp to throw monkey shit if he had two years of training and a truck load of ex-lax®. Second, you would have hated hanging out with him. He only talks about how much he hates the government and if you look closely at his upper right biceps he has a ‘prison tattoo’ of Charlie Brown shooting up. Consider your experience a lesson learned.

Question: Why does everything cost so much more here than on the mainland?

Me: Perhaps because we’re on a tropical

island 150 miles from the ‘real world’ and it costs a lot to get it down here. Or people will charge what people are willing to pay. Paradise is NOT cheap. Got It?

Question: How hard is it to find a ‘lady of the night’ in Key West?

Me: Ask yourself this; Is a tight waistline and

a full set of teeth an absolute necessity? If you answered ‘No,’ proceed with caution. The local crime report is filled with stories of late night drunken horn dogs getting scammed by a ‘chunky temptresses.’

Question: Before my first visit here,

all my online research and advice from friends who’ve been here, all explain that Key West is more than just a place, it is a ‘feeling…’ Can you explain that to me? Me: I probably could, but think it would be better if you were to find the ‘feeling’ for yourself - cause it’s different for everybody. From trust fund babies, to starving artists to folks looking for a new start on a tropical island, the ‘feeling’ might change the longer you’re here. Got the feeling of being a ‘part’ of this island is one you’ll know when you get it. I love my town - I hope you do too. 52

Krakow is the 2nd largest & one of the oldest cities in Poland. The city itself with its stunning architecture dates back to the 7th century. Many tourists come through Krakow to visit Auschwitz concentration camp, but I suggest sticking around for more than a few days. The city is beautiful, & you should walk through it slowly. Hearing the trumpets play, & the guitarists echo through the stone paths ahead. Stop for a well made doughnut or a hot beer - you are in Poland. It truly is a mid evil city, almost every bar & restaurant has an underground area. That is an adventure on its own. Chlopskie Jadlo is a local cuisine in the center of the city. Servers wear traditional clothing & upon sitting down you will receive fresh slices of bread with pickles, sour kraut, & lard. The menu expands from hearty soups, to potato pancakes with salmon, sour cream herring, beef tartar, & of course dumplings. For most people in Poland the main meal is eaten after 2pm & is typically larger that an American lunch. With traditional music playing inside, you can really soak in what classic Poland felt like. Polish doughnuts, Paczki, are a big part of Poland's food culture - Fat Thursday. Pastries are found all over the city in windows along the walk ways. Usually full of jelly or some kind of sweet filling, typically splashed with Polish vodka as an ingredient. The most popular place to stop in for coffee & doughnuts is at House of Donuts. There are different desserts everyday including gluten free & vegan options this little shop has some fantastic choices on sweets. Make sure to try to traditional plum filling or rose jam. Ursa Maior independent brewery has made some of the best tasting beers I have had on this planet. Smooth & strong hovering over 7% tasting like sparkling grape fruit. Mead & Belgium yeasts, mint & herbal bitterness - that is pleasantly warming causing a full contrast to your senses. I would fly back to Poland just to drink this beer - hats off to you Ursa Maior.
