Happy 60th Birthday, Hoebee!

By Bill Hoebee

S

tarting off this issue’s column with the abundantly obvious statement “advertising is absolutely unavoidable.” With TV, people wearing chicken outfits holding signs, radio, pop-up ads, hats,

billboards, movie trailers, bus benches - do they effect how & what you buy? Everyone is in business from religions to toilet brush sales people, word of mouth may appear to be the least expensive ads, but these only work if you’re really good at something, & to be the best usually costs more to produce. So it’s a wash. Kind of because their ads are their products. Companies & ad agencies know who we are (thanks Facebook.) They do extensive research in order to reach their target audience. Let’s start with TV. I decided to “sacrifice myself” & watch TV all day & into the night to see which shows advertisers thought they were reaching their key demographic. First off, on almost every cable channel, there were ads for J.G. Wentworth with opera singers pointing out that, “If you have a structured settlement & you need cash now they can help.” I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone who had a structured settlement. They say in print that if you have lottery winnings they will also pay you for that. Once again, no one I know, But there MUST be a lot of them, because their commercials are virtually on all the time & TV ads aren’t cheap.

WHY DID I BUY THIS?

*!?! 18

1pm -- CNN was on TV when I started. The first ad was for Colace. A very deep voice told me that Colace was America’s #1 stool softener, which is good to know in case I start crapping marbles. Unfortunately, I somehow missed the big stool softener contest they won. Sounds fun. FYI congrats on your big win, Colace. They must have said “people watching cable news in the early afternoon must be blocked up.” 1:30pm -- I switch to a new network (not sure which one.) They were showing a rerun of the show Arrested Development. In the first commercial break there were ads for erectile dysfunction & wiener enlargement pills. Going on the target audience theory, I guess what Arrested Development fans, I can only assume, that the ad agency thought that the target audience were slackers with small, non-working d***s? FYI - the Big Johnson pills listed nausea as a possible side effect. So while it might be nice to have a bigger buddy, it must be quite difficult to enjoy, what with all the hurling & what not. 3:45pm -- Watching another sitcom rerun & a bunch of spots run for “Florida Career Collage.” Their slogan is, “The College that Cares.” Which made me ask if my colleges cared? & if they did, why did they make cheating so hard? They also said they were “dedicated to giving you the best education possible.” Is it better than Harvard, or simply the best possible education for someone lying on the couch watching TV at 3:45 in the afternoon on a weekday? It went on to say that,

“I could get a rewarding fast paced job.” I called & asked the nice lady who answered their hotline if they were able to help if I wanted a slow paced, high paying job? Then I asked if she got her awesome job by attending that incredible school. She hung up when I asked if they could get me paid for watching TV. 6:12pm -- Watching Sanford & Son when a spot came on for Beano, the anti-fart medicine. Dancing vegetables welcomed me to eat them again & not worry about blowing farts. It said we could eat them with “confidence.” That later our ass won’t sound like the invasion of Normandy.... as long as we take Beano. Then a piece of cauliflower & broccoli ask me to submit a love letter to my favorite vegetable for a national contest. I wrote about my ex-girlfriend who love of cucumbers. They said it was gross. 7:38pm -- Watching the news again & a spot for IHOP comes on announcing they’re golden stuffed French Toast Treasures are back!! Then out of nowhere a pirate swings from the roof of an IHOP & steals some guy’s plate of french toast. I’m actually not sure who they were targeting on this one, but I did learn to sit next to the wall when I order french toast, so if a pirate swings in to glom my breakfast, he will smash into the wall. It would be well worth the price. They are watching, just so you know, & this targeting thing is true. Buy something weird on the internet & see what happens next. #BarTabMag

Tears & Chicken by Leigh Pujado

“It shouldn’t work. It shouldn’t be magic. You shouldn’t weep happy and then sad and then happy again. But you do. And I do. And we all do.” - Ray Bradbury - “The Cat’s Pajamas”

I

am approaching my 20th anniversary of life on The Rock this year and it’s making me obnoxiously nostalgic. I fear I’ve reached the sentimental tipping point, when the previously rare phenomena that make me weep are becoming rapidly and dramatically more common. Certainly it is a function of both my age and staying in one place for too long, but the drop-of-the-dime weeping and sudden waves of deep nostalgia are becoming a liability. Virtually everything can be a minefield of sentimentality: A hug from a friend is fraught with emotion. An anecdotal story is an invitation to be reminded of someone dead. A Facebook memory photo of a loved one 24

#BarTabMag

gone from the planet, or even simply gone from the island, will wreck the day. And if someone brings up my beloved former neighbors, Ms. Flick and Martha Hubbard, the sniffling will likely start. They’re not dead, in fact they are alive and well, residing less than a mile from me, but they’re not next door anymore and that makes me profoundly sad! And movies? At this point I’d need tissues for the stupid LEGO movies. Music is especially dangerous. A juke box is a hot bed of potential tear provocation, and not simply traditionally sad songs. The Who, Elvis, Rosemary Clooney, Weird Al…they all have songs containing lyrics that are triggers. I’ve even found myself crying to Miley Cyrus simply because I was so sad that people actually thought her music had value. And The Traveling Wilburys always choke me up, sometimes because the lyrics to “The End of the Line” are so apropos, but sometimes because I can’t remember if Jeff Lynne is still alive and I worry about Bob Dylan being all alone. The changing business landscape of Key West

Wings affects me too. Each time a bygone business comes up in casual conversation, I become insufferable. I’ve still never gotten over the closing of Waterfront Market and their world class cheese counter, and if someone even mentions Dennis Pharmacy, there’s a good chance I may start crying. Hell, I might even get misty eyed at the mention of The Copa, and it burned down before I moved here. Like many of you, I’ll always miss Fast Buck Freddie’s on Duval, Blue on Caroline Street, and the recent loss of The Porch has sent many of us into a tail spin. But if you want to break my heart, all you need to do is bring up the Thai Chicken Wings from 2 Cents. Just talk about those chicken wings and put on “Handle Me with Care,” and I may need to be committed. I spoke with my therapist, Sauvignon Blanc, and she thinks I have a tendency to overreact in many situations. In fact I used to meet her in group sessions but lately, because of my tendency for emotional outbursts, she thinks it’s best if we keep our interactions one-on-one. I told Miss Blanc that my sadness is justified, that I’d watched too many friends either shuffle off to Buffalo and

beyond, or shuffle off this mortal coil. I told her that the losses were piling up, that I’d attended too many farewell parties, that I’d attended too many memorials, that I’d said “Let’s get together soon,” too many times, only to read that person’s obituary in the paper. She just stared at me in her glass is almost empty and so’s the bottle sort of way and recommended I try another form of therapy. So what’s a sentimental, Key West Lifer to do? I’m not sure if what I really need is antidepressants, the fountain of youth, or a time machine. If I got to choose, I’d definitely choose the time machine. When the doors of my beautiful, time traveling DeLorean popped open, I’d race up the stairs of the Waterfront Market, straight to the cheese counter, and bask in the free samples and passionate diatribe of Jan the Cheese Guy. Then I’d find Captain Outrageous on Caroline Street and insist he paint my bike. I’d go sailing one more time on The Western Union. I’d find Captain Frank and make him tell me the Bequia story again, the one with Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. 26

I’d stop by the Godiva counter in Fast Bucks and buy some truffles. I’d trick Kim Schroeder into not moving away. I’d spend another ice cold Miller Lite soaked afternoon with my buddy Ray Judge, listening to Lenny Kravitz and Van Halen. I’d get Anne Walters to tell me one more ridiculously inappropriate story that made me laugh until my ribs ached. I’d tell Coffey, “It’s all good.” I’d get one more hug and an “I luhh you, Baby,” from Raggs. Then I’d go to 2 Cents, order up 50 plates of Thai Chicken Wings, seal them in air-tight containers, freeze them, and sell them to you all for $100 bucks a pop. Who am I kidding? I’d keep all the wings for myself. If this column made you cry, or hungry for food you can no longer order, email: cleighpujado@gmail.com If you think, “Sentimental Tipping Point” would have been a better title for this column, or that the author of this column is far too verbose, or if you enjoy the music of Miley Cyrus, email: larry@bartabmag.com

W illiam Mayer

Lucy’s Retired Surfer Bar, 221 Duval St Full name, originally from? Full name is William Joseph Mayer & I was born in Miami, but I’ve been on the island since I was 11. How long have you been a mixing drinks? I’ve been a bartender for two years. I started at Lucy’s & they have been stuck with me since. Other than Lucy’s being on Duval now, what is the best difference from the previous location on Grinnell St? I would say the Local Lineup Bar that we have on the second floor. It’s a little bit of a sanctuary compared to the rest of the 200 block. How do you spend your days off? I like import & restore old cars, so I’m usually sitting in a dirty shirt, wrenching on the sidewalk working on one of the old project cars that I have. Or working on the house that my sister & I live in. What kind of car are you working on now? I have a ’69 Land Rover Defender & a 1970 Volvo P1800. Biggest bartending pet peeve? Someone ordering a water & not drinking it or ordering a mojito in the middle of the happy hour. Those would probably be the two things, but not drinking your water when I sat there pouring it for you, that’s the biggest. What’s the biggest bartending perk? Being able to socialize with people & forming your little unit in your shift. I really like getting out & being social with the different customers.

What’s the best menu item at Lucy’s? I’m a sucker for our Pao Pao Shrimp Tacos. I can have those three meals a day. We have a Sushi grade tuna that is a new staple menu item, too. How about a go to menu item in Key West [not Lucy’s]? I love the French Dip Sandwich at Azur. How many scorpion shots have you served? I served 33 last Friday, so at this point I’m probably in the triple digits. I don’t mean to brag, but yeah, I’m up there. How many have you taken? I’ve taken three scorpion shots & one worm shot. What’s one thing our readers to know about Lucy’s? This sounds like such a cliché, but we are a really close group of co-workers. We all hang out on our off days. We all like to work out together & try to build a better restaurant. You’ll get a good taste of it up at the Local Lineup Bar bar for sure. You can find William behind the bar at Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant, 221 Duval St. #BarTabMag

Caffeine Carl

Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles St

Full name, originally from, favorite axe? Carl Hilton Wagoner, born & raised right here in Key West & my favorite axe is a 1997 Fender Stratocaster. When did you first pick up a gee-tar? I got a guitar Christmas Eve 1980. I was 14-years-old. What was your first gig? We had a band called Bad Oskar. We opened up for Mr. Bill Blue at Hemingway Days. We were set up over the pool at the Hemingway House back in 1984. How long have you been playing music full time? Probably since 1996.

Who’s your front man Dave Lee or Sammy Hagar? Zack Seemiller.

What were some of the other jobs you’ve had? I worked for the Aqueduct Authority for 12 years & I worked for the city of Key West for a year & a half.

Drink of choice? I’m on the wagon these days. I’m over 4 months sober. It’s bottled water for me, man. I’ve partied enough for everybody here in town.

How did you get the nickname Caffeine Carl? Well, you know, I’m extremely high strung & I fucking stutter. I was given the name by Steve Mello when we played together.

If you could have a bottle of water with anyone living or dead, who would it be? [No hesitation] Hendrix.

Do you listen to music on your days off? Oh, yeah. All Day. Absolutely. I turn on Apple music & let it play. Government Mule, I really like the old stuff still. 80s hair metal. The old stuff - classic Rock, you know.

What restaurant/bar/music venue do you miss most in KW? PTs! PTs, baby.

Best gig you’ve ever played? Easy. Playing the new amphitheater opening up for Eddie Money. Yeah man, it was just awesome. New Years Eve, too.

If you could make it illegal to play one song, what would it be? [No hesitation] Sweet Home Alabama.

Biggest musical influences? Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

What’s a go to song to get a lame crowd going? Sweet Home Alabama.

While you’re in Key West, make sure to catch the phenomenal rock-n-roll show of Caffeine Carl & the Buzz in action at Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles St. Mon, Thurs-Sat when they hit at 9pm. #BarTabMag
