‘Big’ Dave Rohrbaugh Bartender @ Gas Monkey, 217 Duval Street What’s your full name? Originally from?

My full name is David Rohrbaugh, & I am originally from Cimarron, KS.

Profile

How did you get involved with Gas Monkey?

After college at K State, I moved to Kansas City, where I met one of the owners the original Gas Monkey. He asked me if I would move to Dallas to help open it. I agreed & moved to Dallas, got it open & worked at the original store. When he moved to Key West & decided to open the second one, he asked if I would move down here. So, I agreed & here I am. How did you start in food & beverage?

After playing football at Kansas State, I got a job working security at one of the bars in Aggieville [KS]. From there I started working in the kitchen, to bartending. After that I worked construction for several years. Then got back into the bar & restaurant industry when I moved back to Kansas City.

Rumplemintz, ‘cause it’s the best shot ever. I love it.

What was the name of the bar?

I think it’s our staff. I mean, the concept’s nice, the décor is good, our food is excellent. But I really enjoy our staff. I think we have good people working. I think in this town with so much competition, so many places, so many choices, I think it’s the people that make the difference, & who your bartender is. If you like that bartender, you’re going to go back to that bartender. You’re going to remember them for your next visit.

Porter’s Bar & Deli. It’s still there in Aggieville, in Manhattan, KS. It’s a martini/college bar. They do deli sandwiches & martinis. How did your football days go?

Good. I played two years at Kansas State. Went to the Holiday Bowl. Played with some excellent players. A lot of hard work, but it was a lot of fun. Did you win the Holiday Bowl? 

Favorite shot to pour for a customer who doesn’t know what they want?

We did, yes. I believe we finished 6th in the nation that year.

So, your drink of choice is?

Rumplemintz, for a shot. For cocktails, I usually switch between vodka soda or ice, whiskey & water. What do you think customers enjoy most about Gas Monkey?

You can meet Big Dave behind the bar or keeping it in order at Gas Monkey, 217 Duval St. BarTabMag.com

Claire Finley

What’s your name? Age? Place of birth?

My name is Claire Lee Ann Finley. I’m three-zero. I’m about to be three-one. I’m from Davenport, IA. How did you get down to Key West?

Jeff Clark. I was playing in a band called Entrain. I was a sub for a sub gig & Jeff was the singer of the band at the time, the front man. So, I met him & then about a year later he asked me to come down to Key West to play a wedding. How many instruments do you play?

Well, ‘have I played’ is different from ‘do I play’. I played violin from 4th grade till senior year in high school. I did classical competitive piano from age 4 till 18. Played French horn in concert band. I played bass drum in drum-line. I play guitar, & of course electric bass. & I sing. Do you think you could still play all those instruments?

I could make some farting sounds on a French horn. I still have my violin. I often think about joining a community orchestra, because I miss playing in an orchestra.

photoG SenseAtPlay.com What’s the best part of being a girl Rockstar?

[laughing] Oh, God. Well, one of the other reasons I started playing bass is because it got me the attention of all the guys. I was not cool growing-up. At all. But, when I started playing bass, people were like, ‘You’re so cool!’ [laughing] I didn’t realize that I would become such an inspiration to women. I’m not a woman activist by any means, but the longer I play bass & the more I see I effect women who have never seen that, it’s a pretty cool part of it all.

How did you settle on the bass?

How about your most memorable performance?

Because the bass is one note at a time. I felt like it was an instrument I didn’t have to take so seriously, & I wouldn’t be judged like classical piano.

When Zac Brown came to my gig at the Smokin’ Tuna & hung out for like 3 hours & we sang James Taylor together. It was like we were in somebody’s living room hanging out,.

Who would win in an Indian Leg Wrestling Match - best 2 out of 3, Caffeine Carl or Joal Rush?

Make sure you take a chance to check out Claire kill it on the bass while you’re in Key West. See her at Sunset Pier, 0 Duval St, Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles St, or The Green Parrot, 601 Whitehead St. For booking info visit LadyBMusic.com

Oh, shit! Well, I think Joal would have a good chance, but Carl would go conch on his ass. 34

Chef de PROFILE

Zach Moses

@ 915, 915 Duval / Bagatelle, 115 Duval Name? Age? Place of birth?

Zachary Moses, age 34, born in Water Town, SD.

How long have you been at 915?

I’ve been at 915 for just over a year now. What was it like taking over the helm at a such an established restaurant like 915?

Luckily for me I moved to Manhattan for 5 years a few years ago. That’s actually where I became a Executive Chef. & before that I opened six restaurants basically from the start. I designed the kitchen & everything. So, that was really good training on being able to take over a place like this.

Tell us a bit about the 915 lunch menu.

How has adding the Executive Chef role at Bagatelle to your duties at 915 & Point 5 gone?

What is your favorite dish on each menu?

A little bit crazy. It keeps me busy. But it’s been good. I have a good crew [at 915]. They have a really good crew [at Bagatelle]. So, it’s made it a lot easier. How has it been bringing Bagatelle into the fold?

It was good. A whole new set of children. [laughs] What are some of your favorite restaurants outside of Key West?

ilili in New York City is a really amazing Mediterranean tapas restaurant. Baloni Porcelli is an amazing steakhouse - they dry their steaks in house. Les Halles was a really good one, where Anthony Bourdain used to work, but they’re closed down now. 36

BarTabMag.com

It’s kinda a high-bred between the dinner menu & the menu upstairs. There’s a couple of salads from upstairs on it. There’s a few homemade pastas on it. The grass-fed beef hamburger. It’s pretty casual for everybody. The Mediterranean octopus salad upstairs at Point 5. The seared diver scallop with ancient grains at 915. & the butterfly hogfish at Bagatelle. What’s the most fun thing about being a chef?

Well, it’s like I said, I work with a really great crew. We’re like family here. So, it’s nice, everybody gets along, everybody has a good time. But, we all know how to work hard, & we all know how to have fun afterwards. How about a drink of choice?

Laphroaig, single malt scotch whiskey. Stop by & see what Zach is creating at Bagatelle, 115 Duval St & Nine One Five & Point 5 located at 915 Duval St.

SLOAN’S SALOON STORIES: DEAD DRUNK

by David Sloan it back for a guzzle of gin and I’ll tell you the tale of a failed relationship that led to several rounds of shots at a Stock Island saloon. The year was 1949. Weaver’s Camp was a popular Stock Island bar and restaurant owned by the recently divorced Norvella Weaver. Her former husband Tom wasn’t happy with the terms of their divorce and didn’t hesitate to make his feelings known. Before the split he abused her verbally and physically, accusing her of cheating. After the divorce he stalked her and threatened to take away their children. He also made regular visits to her bar to berate her in front of customers and slander her reputation. Tom was a bully. Norvella was tired of being pushed around. She took out restraining and trespassing orders against Tom, but this only enraged him. In a fit of anger, Tom went to the home of one of Norvella’s friends and held her at gunpoint, forcing her to call Norvella saying she needed a ride. When Norvella arrived, Tom jumped from the bushes and pulled the gun on her, demanding that she drop the restraining order. They struggled and a shot was fired, but Norvella was able to escape. That same day she purchased a .32 pistol and a box of ammo. She practiced shooting at tin cans in her back yard before heading to work that evening with the concealed weapon. That night around 10:30pm Tom Weaver arrived at Weaver’s Camp and took a seat at the bar. They say he put 42 nickels in the jukebox with the intention of playing the song “I Love You So

Much It Hurts” 42 times. Norvella walked past Tom and they had words. Norvella headed for the kitchen, but returned moments later with gun in hand. She pushed the barrel against Tom’s chest and fired six shots that sent him to the floor bleeding. Customers looked on with disbelief as Norvella calmly reloaded the gun and fired another five bullets into her ex. When the shooting was done she sat down in a chair and casually suggested someone call the sheriff. Norvella was taken to jail while the sheriff tried to determine if she should be charged. A grand jury was convened and a bizarre courtroom spectacle unfolded full of twists, turns, and questionable practices. The jury only deliberated for 30 minutes. Norvella was acquitted. The people of Stock Island rejoiced. As for Tom, he was not so fortunate. He died on the way to the hospital. The people of Stock Island celebrated this news too. And to this day, people think of Tom and smile while they guzzle their gin in Stock Island, happy that the shots they are served come from a liquor bottle and not from an ex with .32. the stars - at the end of the day a good place to have a drink is important. Soda El Balcon Del Mar located just steps from the crashing waves on the beach. Soda is the Spanish word for diner & are located all around Costa Rica offering local cuisine at a pocket friendly price. Here delicately lit with red tinted lights over wood stained tables. Upstairs tables set over looking the street & the ocean across the way. It would be very easy to sit here & order one drink after another, especially with the quality & crafting that goes into them. When the sun goes down, the grill fires up. What's on the menu is what's fresh off the dock. Personally I went for the whole bodied salt rubbed snapper. A Tico style dish with rice, plantains, & a salad. Joanie Brown & Jose Luis Castrillo Vasquez, owners & operators of the restaurant & bar, do it all. Taking orders, mixing drinks, back in the kitchen, & going

to grab ice in town.

Sold here you will find 3 different Costa Rican beers. Pilsen, a pale lager with some bitterness & a mixture of malts & rice making it dry. Imperial, a balanced malt with hops, yellow in color, & the favorite locals choice. & Imperial Silver, the lighter choice of imperial. I chose the highly recommended mojito. Well crafted with crushed mint, & perfected sugar. All of the drinks made with a local sugar cane liquor of high quality - Cacique Guaro. At the end of that long day, do as the locals do. Get to the grill when it fires up. Order a local beer or mixed drink. What once was a small fishing village can still be seen from the table, on the beach, or walking the back roads. Get up, get out there. Drink local. Soda El Balocn Del Mar Anamaya Road, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica
