Once the sun goes down, the crowd thins out & people head up Duval to the Gecko or maybe down the boardwalk to Schooner Wharf. Instead of throwing on a sarong or a pair of board shorts, some of these girls have embraced a new phenomenon. Just keep rocking that bikini & sashay your ass down Duval. Maybe it’s a certain liquid confidence that comes with guzzling rum punch all afternoon, or maybe Key West girls (er, girls in Key West?) have embraced their bods for all to see at all hours of the day. Five years ago, I wrote an article for the BarTab magazine titled “The Needo for Speedo” that chronicled the history of & my prudishness towards the tiny Spandex male swim trunks. As the years have passed, one would hope my puritanical taste in swimwear would mellow & I would embrace any & all types of swimsuits, from the concealing to the revealing. 48
Now don’t get me wrong...I’m not wearing those Burk-inis that many Middle-Eastern women are swaddled in poolside. I’m not even in “The Swim Skirt” phase of my life yet. Like a good Key West girl, I love to buy myself a new, cute bikini at the top of the season each year. I try to keep myself in bikini shape, & although my shape hasn’t changed much in the last couple decades, the shape of bikini bottoms has changed. Namely, they are shrinking. What was once the common, cute little, roundish scoop bottom is being rapidly replaced by a thin strip of fabric approximately the width of standard duct tape. Call it a “Tanga” or “The Cheekie,” it’s a whole lot of booty to be sporting in public. I don’t seem to notice it on other women at the beach or at the pool, especially when the skimp-suit model is young. But on an aging dame such as myself........it seems a bit obscene, almost “dirty old woman-ish.” Which brings me to the flesh & bones of this story....namely my exposed flesh. Recently I was shopping at Wanderlust on Petronia Street. (It’s a totally cool boutique & you should already be shopping there!) In the midst of the artisan jewelry, hand crafted goods & beautiful island style dresses,
there was a rack of totally cute, reasonably priced bikinis. With my standard Size Medium, I rushed into the dressing room, certain I had found my swimsuit for the summer season. The top fit like a dream. The bottoms were cute as hell from the front. But as I turned around for the posterior view, I realized I was mooning myself in the dressing room mirror, a tiny strip of fabric barely covering the crack of my ass. I thought to myself, “These swimsuits must run on the small side,� & I exchanged it for another suit two sizes larger. Back in the dressing room, I found myself with new troubles. I couldn’t keep the top up & the larger size was no wider on the back side but rather big all over. I was still mooning myself in the mirror but now, I also looked as if I had a load in my pants. Yea. Sexy, I know. Defeated, I exited the dressing room sad & humbled, returning the bikinis to their rack to await discovery by their future, much younger owners.
