Before rightfully telling me to fuck off let me explain.... well.... it’s kinda like..... awww, to hell with it, it’s a great way to make a living. I was excited when BarTab publisher Larry BarTab asked my company (shameless plug - Marrero Studios) to take the pics. Hot chicks in bikinis? As long as they weren’t from Stock Island - count me in! My first idea, of course, was to try to shoot some bat shit insane stuff. The prop list I initially gave Larry consisted of the following:

TAKING PICTURES OF

CHICKS IN BIKINIS IS A HARD WAY TO MAKE A LIVING BY MIKE MARRERO

Chicks in bikinis (the one item I wouldn’t budge on) A pirate midget. Fake blood. An Electric Chainsaw. Bill Bravo. A small white pony. More midgets. And a boa constrictor. Larry quickly and professionally made the following points... 1 ‘Who’s going to talk the girls into it’? 2. ‘The photos are supposed to turn people on, not make people feel weird about themselves’. ‘I don’t know how I feel about this’.

15 KWBT

What Larry did get us was: •A kick ass 55 foot boat (courtesy of BestKeyWestCharters. com, another shameless plug) that looked like something out of a Puff Daddy video. • A bunch of cool ass chicks that were open to most of our crazy ideas, although not my midget/Bill Bravo/little white pony idea. After running that one by one of the girls she pointed at my business partner John Paul and said, “I want him to photograph me instead.” Fair enough. •The electric chainsaw. Nice! We’ve always liked to base our photos shoots around themes, and Sports Illustrated was the BarTab had in mind. He secured us a pimped out boat with a cool ass captain and way more booze than we needed and then we hoofed it out to Boca Grande for some shots on the water. It was easy. It was fun. Everyone was satisfied - we hope. For the next shoot we managed to get Larry to sign off on a Miami Vice style drug deal, complete with a mini yacht, machine guns and a go-fast boat. Normally I don’t like to shoot out of any type of moving vehicle, it doesn’t agree with my tummy, but it was calm and there was no way I was going to let JP have all the fun. Off we went and it was calm, so calm that you couldn’t distinguish the water from the horizon, what Conch boys like to refer to as “booger flat”. We soon realized this was because there was absolutely no wind, which meant it was approximately 173 degrees outside. The shoot was challenging, tiring, and blazingly hot, but the images were worth it. I mean how often do you get to pose chicks with 16

machine guns, stage a fake drug deal (JP even got to play a drug mule) and have Larry BarTab climb into a black garbage bag to play a chopped up body? Sadly not often enough. I met Larry at the Green Parrot at 10am for the final shoot. Larry was the only person in the joint, sitting at the bar nursing a hangover. It felt like I had walked into a Tom Waits song. However, once Elaney showed up, everything started clicking into place (a common side effect in the presence of hot chick). Elaney is one of the nicest, most laid back people I know, but turn a camera on her and… holy shit, she turns into a 70’s era sexpot and I mean that in the best possible way. It goes without saying we were going to play this up. We posed her with the following similarly shaped objects: pool stick, yard dog, cigar, popsicle... you get the the idea. Of all the shoots, this was the most fun. Between Larry heckling English soccer fans, his favorite line was, “I didn’t know England had a soccer team”, and the never-ending flow of bloody Mary’s, we had a blast. The fact is they were all fun and I have thank the ladies for making it possible. We should all thank them because the alternative would have been taking pics of Larry in a bikini. Nuff said. Mike Marrero is a photographer and owner of Marrero Studio. Visit MarreroStudio.com (another shameless plug).

Contrary to popular belief, when a bartender refuses service, he or she is not necessarily being a dick. There are a great many reasons to refuse the sale of a controlled substance. Next time you get cut off, kicked out or denied, read through this list and see where you may have gone wrong. You appear to be under the age of 30 and you have no I.D. Come on people! If you are sixteen years of age or older, you are required by law to carry identification with you whenever you appear in public. If you look young and go bar hopping I.D.-less, we can only assume that you are either: a) not yet 21.

You are intoxicated and acting like a douche bag. I know it’s hard to believe that sweet little ole’ you could ever exhibit behavior that could be construed as annoying. But truth be told, most people turn the corner at a certain level of intoxication and you are halfway around the block. We don’t want you to kill someone with 5,000 pounds of steel after pulling out of our parking lot. We know that you drove your automobile to the bar and plan to drive it home later. Either switch to taxi rides or switch to soda pop.

b) not very bright.

You used a nasty word to slur someone’s ethnicity or sexual orientation.

Or c) on an undercover sting with an officer trying to bust our establishment for serving a minor. If your wallet was stolen or you simply forgot your license, I am truly sorry but that’s just not my problem. My job is to protect the liquor license and my own butt. You’ve been at our bar all day. When the longevity of your drinking shift surpasses the length of my bartending shift, you’ve been here too long. Time to move along buddy. 20 KWBT

Regardless of whether you are drunk or stone cold sober, you’re done. Out. Don’t let the door hit you in your ignorant, homophobic, lily white ass. We remember what you did last time you were here. Maybe you don’t remember, but the fiasco/snafu/spectacle you caused made it into our big, red incident report book in the office and you ended up on our 86 list. You took a little nap on the bar.

When I grabbed your arm to wake you, you shook the eye sleepers and drool off your face and nonchalantly attempted to order another beer. After years of publicly declaring your sobriety, you’ve selected our bar as the ideal location for falling off the wagon. It seems like only yesterdaythat you were a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous and now you are ordering Jäger Bombs with Irish whiskey chasers. Holy crap! What is that smell? Oh, it’s you. Whether you are lacking in hygiene or marinating in bad perfume, if you stink up my bar, the other customers will leave. Go hose off. And when it comes to cologne, a little dab will do you. You were slightly annoying and the bartender is being a dick.

Still not getting served and none of the above apply to you? Then you pissed off the bartender by snapping, shouting, whistling, tapping or waving. A good rule of thumb when ordering a drink: Do not call a bartender in the same way you would call a dog. Unless, of course, you call your dog with a twenty spot and a smile. cleighpujado@gmail.com drinkslingershandbook.com Tavern N Town Ranked #1 Restaurant of all Marriott Hotels by Guest Surveys

BT: Well, I’m not going to ask your age. A: I don’t care! I’m 30! The older I get, the more I like myself! BT: Is Ocean Key the only job you’ve had here? A: No, I worked for [the previous owners of] Island Dog’s first. They let me go after they found out I started working at Ocean Key – which was fine with me.

35 KWBT

BT: Where do you work at Ocean Key? A: I work at the pool bar mostly. BT: What’s the best costume you’ve ever worn? A: I wore a sexy army costume for Fantasy Fest – it was a pretty big hit! Green camo with star pasties, mesh bikini & skirt! I was also a slutty bumblebee, that was a good one! BT: You work the coconut races at Ocean Key sometimes? I’ve heard about some of your wardrobe malfunctions... A: Mine? [acting innocent] I’ve never had any... until recently. But, I don’t think it’s the wardrobe – I think it’s more the booze. BT: Was this your first bikini photo shoot? A: Yeah! It was interesting – actually, it was fun. But I haven’t seen the pictures yet. But it was fun – especially after I had a little to drink. BT: What kind of drink should someone buy you if they took you out? A: If it’s liquor, then a sweet tea & water. If it’s a beer, then some kind of cider like Magners. If it’s wine, then a Pinot Noir.

BT: Do you have a boyfriend? A: Well, I’ve kinda started seeing someone, but no, I don’t have a boyfriend.

BT: Top 3 turn-ons? A: Well, they have to smell good, confidence is a huge turnon & as cheesy as this sounds, but an upbeat, cheery guy. BT: What are your top 3 turn-offs? A: Well, arrogance for sure, guys that are too muscular kinda scare me & no “popping the collar”! BT: What’s better, water slides or roller coasters? A: Roller Coasters. BT: Drinking with the guys or drinking with the girls? A: I’m gonna say drinking with the guys, because my best friend is a guy. But I do love to drink with the girls! BT: Do you find yourself acting different when you’re hanging out with guy friends as opposed to your girl friends? A: No, I act equally retarded with both. BT: What’s your favorite place to have a martini? A: Bagatelle, except for Mondays, then I’ll go to Virgilio’s. BT: What’s your favorite hide-out-bar - If you don’t want to run into anybody? A: Well, it’s not much of a secret anymore, but probably the Bottle Cap. BT: What kind of food do you really like to eat? A: Well, I like everything! But, I’m a total steak-&-potato kinda girl! BT: Got any shout outs? A: Shout outs? Yeah! I’d like to give Odie a shout out! ‘Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out!’ 38 KWBT

Being unencumbered by any journalism degree and being a paid local and national columnist for 8 years, it would seem selfish if I didn’t share with any underemployed would-be journalists out there some of the knowledge I’ve gained and prove that virtually ANYBODY can do this. For example: Don’t feel any obligation to tell the truth all the time. If it helps you meet the required amount of words needed to receive a paycheck, fabricate all you want. I’ve also learned that just about every columnist (including myself) will do at least one “series” of columns. For example “New weight loss and fitness program” or in my case, “What happens to the contestants in a competitive eating contest after the show” (“the night the toilets cried”). I’ve found that writing a series of articles is much easier, and removes the stress of having to come up with a relevant topic every week. Budding columnists- pay attention. Use all the free time you’ve gained by “researching” your “series” at your favorite bar, and please don’t freak out if you can’t come up with a topic. Just write nonsense-it works. You’re still reading this, 42 KWBT

by Bill Hoebee aren’t you? Here’s an example: “Hoebee’s New Year’s fitness program” I went on the Subway sandwich diet and gained 7 pounds and I’m super pissed at Jared the sandwich guy. I now feel compelled to start rumors that Jared is funding a Northern Idaho based para-military group with his fat ass sandwich cash! You see, its not true (I hope) but I just got paid for writing it. You can also make money about stuff in the news, no matter how stupid it is. Take the case of Dr. Dobson of “Focus on Family” accusing the creators of Sponge Bob Square Pants of making kids gay. Could this moron really think this? Or was he just going for a pay check when he wrote this column? See, sometimes using your power for evil is bad, but profitable. If indeed the Doctor was right, will some savvy marketing agent start selling Sponge Bob Square Pants knee pads? Will 4th grade classes be better decorated? Speaking of religion (potential writers, pay attention to how I ramble on to fill my word count), I love the Amish. They don’t try to change me, I don’t try to change them (again, potential writers, note how I just used religion, technology, aliens and controversy to add about 100 words that don’t necessarily mean anything). And if writing for magazines isn’t your bag, perhaps writing

copy for TV commercials is more your style. How hard could this possibly be? I’m sure somebody made a ton of cash writing the new “Charmin Ultra” toilet paper commercial. They cleverly employed the use of cute singing/dancing bears to convince us to wipe our asses with Charmin Ultra because “less is more”. His job was to convince us that if this stuff is good enough for pink and powder blue bears, it’s plenty good for regular human folks. Mission accomplished! The guy that wrote that is no different than you and me except that he got paid for writing about ass wiping bears. Come to think of it, I just did too. If you don’t wanna be a writer, don’t believe everything you read, it might be someone looking for another easy payday. Think for yourself. And now, your chance to become a paid columnist is here. Simply write a column, email it to me, and I’ll give you 5 bucks if I like it and get it printed, giving you no credit. But you, my friend, will always have the knowledge you were a paid columnist. You’re welcome. FYI it appears I just figured out a way to get paid NOT to write columns. Word! PS. I just pissed away all the money I made writing this column at happy hour, which means either I drink A LOT or I don’t’ get paid a lot. You decide, I don’t remember. Bill Hoebee

Bill Hoebee is on weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, “Hoebee in the Afternoon” on SUN 99.5 & 103.1 FM & also hosts Club Hour on KeysTV channel 24. 43 KWBT

K: “Do you want to take a ride in my yacht?” – That’s always a good one! L: Oh! I’ve had a guy put his Cadillac keys on the bar, and then he was like “Y’know, those could be yours!” That was pretty cheesy. BT: Drinking with the boys or drinking with the girls? K: The girls. Runs on the beach! BT: Are you planning any other adventures together? K: Yes! We’re planning another cruise! L: Or a road trip! 53

BT: Any shout outs you wanna give? K & L: Hassan for giving us such a great job! And for shoving shots down our throats. K: …and my Dad - I’m a Daddy’s Girl. L: I’m going to give a shout out to Angela Davela, for washing my feet in the Mr. Z’s bathroom.

BT: What is the best part about working here? B: The people! I love my customers. They’re all my friends & they’re great people. I also love that I work by myself. BT: Where are you from? B: I am from Holland, O-H-I-O! I’m an Ohio bitch. BT: Tell us a little bit about growing up in Ohio. B: It was phenomenal. I was raised very sheltered though. My father was a Deacon & we went to church twice a week. Me, my brother & my sister would sit in the bleachers & try to color & my parents would freak out cause they were in a middle of a service & pinched us. BT: What are some of your favorite things to do in KW? What do you like most about living in KW? B: Going out on the boat. BT: Favorite place to tan? B: Out on the boat of course. BT: Favorite kind of swimwear? B: It has to be be low-rider or Brazilian - or my new favorite, because of April [BarTab bikini girl pg 33], is scrunch back. My 5 new bikinis after we did the schwimsuit issue [yes, schwim... she has been drinking] are all scrunch back. BT: Tan lines – in or out? B: I don’t get it? BT: Do you have tan lines? B: Oh! Only on the bottom. 60

BT: Favorite event in Key West? B: Usually Pride Fest, except this year was not good straight people were running it. BT: Do you get a night off during Fantasy Fest? B: Year ago, yes. The past couple though, no. 62 KWBT

BT: So what parties have you been to? B: I went to the Red Party 3 years ago. This past year I worked it & I don’t remember seeing anyone because were so busy.

BT: Do you have a place on your body, that drives you absolutely crazy? B: Who doesn’t! Every part can. BT: What’s more fun, water slides or roller coasters? B: Roller coasters. I like to pee my pants cause no one else can see it - wait! That’d be water slide. BT: Beaches or pools? B: Pools, because there are no sharks in pools. BT: Drinkin’ with the guys or with the girls? B: Ooo, that’s a hard one. It depends on the atmosphere. Are we at a strip club? BT: Sure. B: Girls! BT: How bout at Jack Flats? B: Guys. BT: Playin’ in the rain or in the mud? B: Oooh honey. I mean peanut butter. I mean mud. BT: Football, baseball, basketball or hockey? B: Gymnastics! [laughs] Football. BT: What football team do you root for? B: What ever tank top I have, which I bought one for every team. I wear who is ever going to play that day. BT: How do you choose which team to wear? B: Which ever looks cuter on my boobs. BT: Drink of choice? B: PATRON! X! O!

BT: What about day drinking? B: I LOVE day drinking. Especially in the rain. BT: Or the mud. B: Or jello. BT: So where do you typically do it? B: Everywhere. Any place that has Espresso Tequila I’m there. BT: Where is your favorite place to eat in Key West? B: Mangoes hands down. They have the best duck I’ve had in my life with Grand Marnier glaze. They have a tuna appetizer that is so phenomenal. They have an amazing mushroom martini that is not a drink, it is an appetizer, in a martini glass. BT: How do you like working with more, Jamie or Kyle [Fogarty bartenders]? B: Jamie! [laughs] BT: Who’s a better bartender, Matt or Doug [Jack Flat bartenders]? B: Ooohh. Doug! BT: Who’s a better boss, Rick or Joe [owners]? B: Joe! [snorts & laughs] Joe’s not on my ass, Rick is! BT: Any summer plans? B: Yes! August. Kelly Kirk’s bachelorette party. We’re going to watch the Philly’s game on Friday night which I’ve never been to & Saturday night we are going to Atlantic City which I’ve never been to. BT: Any other general shout outs? B: I’d like to give a shout out to my girls. Mamasita. And my mommy.
