ハウス主催のホリデーパーティー

毎年恒例のホリデーパーティに向けた準備をしている生徒たちを見ていると、12月の到来を感じます｡ 今年のイベントはそれぞれのハウスキャプテンの企画の元、ハウス主催で、パーティは教室棟のロタン ダで行われました。伝統的なクリスマスツリーは、生徒たちの折り紙のオーナメントで彩られました。ロ ックバンド部やザイオンのダンスグループによるパフォーマンスが披露されました。今年初の試みとな るハウス毎のパフォーマンスでは、生徒たちの才能を生かした独創的な出し物が印象的でした。参加者 は、季節のお菓子を摘まんだり、文化祭実行委員会が作成したクリスマスらしい壁紙の前で友達との記 念撮影したりしました。生徒たちにとって忘れられない思い出のイベントになったことでしょう。

Holiday Party Sponsored by Houses

With the arrival of December, the spirit of the season began permeating throughout campus as the students started preparing for their annual holiday party. This year’s festive event was hosted by the six residential houses and planned by the House Captains. The party took place in the rotunda of the first floor of the main academic building. A traditional Christmas tree, brimming with beautiful student crafted origami ornaments, adorned the first floor. The students were entertained during the event by rock band musical numbers and Zion dance routines. A new feature this year was a Talent Show. Each house sponsored a performance that highlighted the creative and diverse skills of various students. All in attendance enjoyed the event as they sampled seasonal treats and posed for pictures in a photo booth and in front of meticulously created seasonal backdrops. Many joyous memories were made throughout the evening!

9年生と教員との昼食会

また、もう一つの新たな試みとして、教員が生徒とランチを共にする時間が設けられました。食事の 時を共に過ごすことで親睦を深める事を目的とし、今年度は9年生のみ、6人程度のグループが毎週金 曜日教職員と共にランチを食べました。英語で会話をする機会でもあるこの時間では個人的な話題か ら世界の時事ニュースまで幅広い話題が飛び交いました。栄養バランスの考えられた美味しい食事と共 に英語での会話を楽しんだようです。

Faculty Lunches with the Ninth Graders

Another successful reform instituted this past year was the concept of faculty and staff eating lunch with the students. This traditional boarding school concept of sharing meals as a way to enhance community bonding was established in September, with assigned faculty members dining with the entire ninth grade at reserved tables in the Dining Hall. Every Friday, during the designated lunch period, each participating educator dined with a rotating group of approximately six students. With the focus on conversing in English, students and adults exchanged opinions and ideas on everything from personal and school topics to current events throughout the world. By the end of each lunch period, all staff and ninth graders were satiated with the combination of healthy food and invigorating conversation.

ハウスシステム

今年から寮では新たにハウス制度を導入しました。このシステムは家庭にいるような快適な生活環 境をつくるため、生徒たちは学年を問わず６つのハウスに分かれ、そこが学生生活の中心となっていま す｡ 様々なハウス主催のイベントを通して自尊心と責任感を育て、お互いを支え合うこを目標としていま す｡ 今年はタイダイシャツ作り、ボードゲームナイト、ホリデーショッピングなど生徒たちが主体となって 企画、運営されました。今後この制度が生徒間に浸透していくにつれ、ハウス間でよきライバル心が生 まれ、ディベート大会や音楽会、そしてスポーツ大会などを通して競い合っていく事ができることを願っ ています。

House System

One of the exciting new features of the boarding environment at the academy has been the implementation of the traditional and effective House System. This type of boarding experience has divided the residence halls into six socials that are vertically integrated by grade levels. The goal is to create a sense of belonging within a comfortable home atmosphere. The house system at the academy will be nurtured to create a sense of pride, responsibility, and accomplishment, while also inspiring members to support each other. Recent events undertaken by various houses include a tie-dye shirt activity, game nights, a holiday shopping excursion to the mall, and an outing to Pumpkin Blaze, a local pumpkin carving display. As the house system takes root, there will eventually be friendly rivalries between the houses that will take place in the form of debates, musical competitions, and athletic matches.

土曜日プログラム（音楽と美術）

2019 -2020年度の改革の特徴的な一つとして、ジュニア(9年生と10年生)のためにアレンジされ た音楽とアートプログラムがあります。これらのクラスは、ニューヨーク校で世界レベルの寮制学校 体験を作り出すという設定の中で考案されました。土曜日の朝、ジュニア達の参加する音楽プログラ ムの合唱では、ボーカルトレーニングを重点的に行います。その後、様々なアートや音楽の授業にも 参加します。アートプログラムでは、表現主義の描写、版画や静物画が含まれ、音楽プログラムは､ ブラスバンド、コーラスクラス、2段階のレベルに分かれたオーケストラ(弦楽器は初心と上級)で構 成されています。今年度最初の土曜日プログラムの結果には目覚ましいものがあり、このプログラム を更に充実させて参ります。

Saturday Art & Music Program

One of the signature reforms of the 2019-2020 school year has been the creation of a structured music and art program for juniors (9th and 10th graders). These classes were developed with the intent of creating a world-class boarding school experience at Keio Academy of New York. On a typical Saturday morning, all the juniors engage in the choral aspect of the music program, which emphasizes vocal training. Afterwards, students participate in a variety of art and music classes. Art program offerings include expressionist drawing, printmaking, and still life drawing. The music curriculum is comprised of a brass band, chorus classes, and two levels of orchestra (strings for beginners and advanced). The results of this first year of the Saturday Program have been extraordinary, and plans are in place to expand this going forward.
