Flatstock Europe ist seit der ersten Ausgabe des Reeperbahn Festivals ein fester Bestandteil und mittlerweile auch eine liebgewonnene Tradition im Programm geworden. Normaler weise gastiert die Rock-Art-Poster-Convention ausschließlich auf den großen Musikfestivals Nordamerikas, daher ist die Flatstock-Ausstellung im Rahmen des Reeperbahn Festivals einzigartig in Europa. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem American Poster Institute und mit Unterstützung von Feinkunst Krüger bringt das Reeperbahn Festival dieses Jahr bereits zum sechsten Mal internationale Flatstock-Künstler nach Hamburg, die sich in Zelten auf dem Spielbudenplatz mit feinster Siebdruckkunst und ausgefallenen Konzertankündigungsplakaten präsentieren. Unter den limitierten, handsignierten Siebdrucken lässt sich die eigene Lieblingsband ebenso auffinden wie das persönliche Konzerthighlight des Vorjahres – all das in Postergestalt zum nach
Hause Mitnehmen. Sowohl Reeperbahn Festival-Besucher als auch Posterliebhaber, Sammler und Neuentdecker werden auf der Suche nach ihrem Lieblingsmotiv auf eine spannende Reise geschickt, inmitten von explodierenden Farben und artifiziellen Designs wahre Posterschätze zu erforschen. Flatstock Europe has been an integral part of the Reeperbahn Festival since the festival’s first year and has become, in the meantime, a cherished tradition in the festival schedule. Usually the Flatstock rock art poster convention only makes the rounds of the major North
American music festivals – meaning the Flatstock exhibition in conjunction with the Reeperbahn Festival is a one-of-a-kind event in Europe. In cooperation with the American Poster Institute and with the support of gallery Feinkunst Krüger the Reeperbahn Festival is bringing international Flatstock artists to Hamburg for the sixth time. The artists will showcase the very finest silkscreen art and off-beat concert posters in tents on Spielbudenplatz.

Falls euch die Namen bekannt vorkommen, liegt das wahrscheinlich daran, dass die beiden schon beim letzten Reeperbahn Festival Teil der Flatstock-Ausstellung „Rocker’s Original“ waren, wo sie als die
heimlichen Stars galten. Dieses Jahr zeigen Ryan und Santora gemeinsam jene Zeichnungen, die häufig als Vorlage für ihre Siebdrucke dienen und stimmen damit ideal ein auf die Flatstock Poster-Convention auf dem Spielbudenplatz. In addition to the Flatstock Europe 6 poster convention an exhibition devoted to two Flatstock artists will be mounted at the Feinkunst Krüger gallery. Jay Ryan and Justin Santora are the artists and their original works can be seen at Feinkunst Krüger from September 10th until October 1st. If their names ring a bell it’s probably because at last year’s Reeperbahn Festival they both participated in the Flatstock exhibition “Rockers’ Original”, where they were quite the talk of the show. This year Ryan and Santora are exhibiting drawings that frequently serve as models for their silkscreens – a perfect tune-up for the Flatstock poster convention on Spielbudenplatz. Zusätzlich zur Flatstock Europe 6 Poster-Convention findet in diesem Jahr in der Galerie Feinkunst Krüger eine Ausstellung statt, die sich zwei FlatstockKünstlern im Speziellen widmet. Jay Ryan und Justin Santora heißen die beiden Herren, deren Originale von 10.09. bis 01.10. bei Feinkunst Krüger zu sehen sind.
Hamburg trug entscheidend zum persönlichen Stil und Image der Beatles bei. Hierher kamen sie als unerfahrene Teenager, entwickelten sich zu einer professionellen Live-Band und verließen die Stadt ein paar Jahre später als lokale Berühmtheiten. Die Musikerin und Songwriterin Stefanie Hempel ist die Erfinderin der musikalischen Beatles-Tour in Hamburg. Die Beatles-Expertin führt Touristen und Fans auf den Spuren der Fab Four durch St. Pauli und zu all jenen Orten, an denen Beatles-Geschichte geschrieben wurde. Die Tour bietet anhand vieler Bilder, Zitate und lustiger Anekdoten einen lebendigen Eindruck vom Rock ´n´ RollLeben der Beatles in Hamburg. Hamburg had a decisive influence on The Beatles’ personal style and image. They arrived as inexperienced teenagers, matu-

As an expert in everything Beatles, she’s guiding tourists and fans on the trail of the Fab Four through St. Pauli and to the places where Beatles history was made. With the help of heaps of pictures, quotations, and amusing anecdotes the tour brings The Beatles’ Rock ’n’ Roll days in Hamburg to life. Small Press Explorer schickt die Besucher auf eine Entdeckungsreise in die Produktions-Zusammenhänge der unbekannten, fern von kommerziellen Systemen arbeitenden Zeichner aus aller Welt.
The main theme of this year’s programme is the fanzine – by definition a magazine produced by fans for fans, be it a do-ityourself mag or a semi-professional journal. Small Press Explorer sends its visitors on a voyage of discovery – into the production worlds of unknown illustrators from around the globe working at a far remove from commercial systems. Die Comiczeitung Kuti gilt in der finnischen Independent-Szene als das wichtigste Organ der Macher rund um die in Helsinki angesiedelte Ateliergemeinschaft Kutikuti. Die Idee hinter Kuti ist denkbar einfach: auf Zeitungspapier reproduziert und kostenlos verteilt, bleibt die Ausrichtung trotz Finanzierung via Anzeigen und Kulturförderung kompromisslos schrill, nichtkommerziell und abseitig.
Within the Finnish independent scene the comics newspaper Kuti has been considered the most important mouthpiece of the innovators behind the Helsinki-based studio community Kutikuti. The idea behind Kuti is very simple: printed on newsprint and distributed free of charge the orientation remains – despite financing via adverts and cultural sponsors – uncompromising, brash, noncommercial, and esoteric. Eines der interessantesten deutschen Fanzines der letzten Jahre ist das in Bielefeld stationierte Biologisch Abbaubare Illusionen. Die Inhalte der bislang klassisch im Copyshop reproduzierten Hefte, mit der vierten Ausgabe erscheint das Fanzine erstmals im Digiprint, changieren zwischen absurden Fantasywelten, juvenilen Tagträumen und ironischen Selbstreflexionen. One of the most interesting German fanzines in recent years is the Bielefeld-based Biologisch Abbaubare Illusionen (Biodegradable Illusions). The content of their publications – previously in classic copy-shop format; the fourth issue is the first of their fanzines to be published in digiprint – oscillates between absurd fantasy worlds, juvenile daydreams, and ironic self-contemplations.

Während des Reeperbahn Festivals stellt BEATLEMANIA rund 400 Cover-Artworks in ihren Sond era usstellungsräumen aus. Zudem werden am 23. und 24.09. von 16 bis 19 Uhr LiveKunst-Events mit ausgewählten „Showtime“-Künstlern geboten. Ganz im Sinne des DIY-Gedankens des Projektes haben die Besucher dann auch die Möglichkeit, ihr eigenes „Showtime“Cover zu gestalten. Danach läuft die Ausstellung noch bis 31.12. regulär weiter. Amos wird am Donnerstag um 21.00 auf der SpielbudenplatzBühne West auch live auftreten. “Showtime” is musician and entertainer Amos’ newest rock album. The Hamburg label Sounds of Subterrania initially released Amos’ album on vinyl with a white cover. Subsequently more than 400 visual artists from 40 different countries working in all conceivable genres designed original works of art for the album – meaning each individual record got its own personal look. „Showtime“ ist das neueste Rock-Album des Musikers und Entertainers Amos. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Hamburger Label Sounds Of Subterrania erschien Amos’ Album zunächst auf Vinyl mit weißem Cover. Daraufhin gestalteten mehr als 400 visuelle Künstler aus 40 verschiedenen Ländern und aus allen nur denkbaren Genres individuelle Artworks für diese Platte – jede Schallplatte erhielt somit ihr persönliches Äußeres. Neben Designern, Grafikern und bildenden Künstlern beteiligten sich auch renommierte Flatstock- und Street Art-Künstler an dem Projekt, unter anderem Michael Hacker, Justin Santora, Fritte und Groningen Siebdruck Kollektiv. „Showtime“ bot dadurch nicht nur Gestaltern, Designern und Grafikern eine neue Form, um sich und ihr künstlerisches Können zu präsentieren, sondern schafft auch die Visualisierung kreativen Potentials.

In addition, live art events with selected “Showtime” artists will be happening at 23. and 24.09., from 16.00 to 19.00. In keeping with the project’s do-it-yourself idea visitors will have a chance to design their own “Showtime” covers. The exhibition will then have its regular run, closing on 31.12. Musik als Inspirationsquelle ist der Ausgangspunkt für Sonja Niemeiers Ausstellung 6 Questions About Music. Kleine Momente voller musikalischer Sinneseindrücke werden in Bildern reflektiert und zeigen, was nur Musik fähig ist darzustellen. 6 Questions About Music sieht sich selbst dabei als ein Konglomerat aus den Faktoren Körper, Verstand und Seele: Von jedem der porträtierten Künstler werden drei Bilder zur Schau gestellt, jeweils eine Live-Aufnahme (sinnbildlich für die Seele), eine Fotografie sei nes Fragebogens (gleichzusetzen mit dem Verstand) und ein Schnappschuss während des Ausfüllens ebenjenes Vordrucks (als körperlicher Akt). Paul Simonon, Peter Hook und Jarvis Cocker sind nur drei der über 60 Musiker, die sich auf dieses Experiment eingelassen haben und uns an ihrem Innersten teilhaben lassen. Als Lektüre zur Ausstellung wird ein Katalog erscheinen, in dem die Porträts und Fotografien 20 ausgewählter Künstler abgebildet sein werden.
Music. An ever-present source of inspiration in our lives, or to put it in Fran Healy’s words, the oldest form of communication. Its power to stir emotions and set energies free is unique and unexplored. Sonja Niemeier’s exhibition doesn’t aim to find answers or express personal views on this energy, nor does it dare to explain it. It is only a small glimpse, a tiny moment captured in images that reflects what only music can do. 6 Questions About Music could be described as the combination of body, mind and soul, or inspiring, being inspired and creating: there is one live shot of each artist, his hand-written answers to the six questions about music as well as a picture of him signing them. There will also be a book that portraits 20 artists displayed at this exhibition, including Peter Hook, Paul Simonon and Jarvis Cocker. In total there are over 60 artists who have agreed to be part of this experiment. During this reading, exbouncers Henning Geisler, Mark Büttner, and Viktor Hacker will whisk the audience off into the parallel universe of Hamburg’s night life. The event will prove fascinating for spectators and listeners alike, as the clever texts of Viktor, Mark, and Henning and the new perspectives they offer challenge the widespread image of the bouncer as mindless brute. Beim Kampf der Künste treten im Poetry-Slam Wort-Akrobaten und gestandene Literaten mit jeweils fünf Minuten langen Wort- oder Lese-Beiträgen gegeneinander an. Eine willkürlich aus dem Publikum rekrutierte Jury entscheidet via Punktesystem über Sieg und Niederlage. Als Teilnehmer beim PoetrySlam auf dem Reeperbahn Festival konnten unter anderen vier der größten norddeutschen Slam-Stars gewonnen werden: Bente Varlemann (Hamburgs erfolgreichste Slammerin), Meral Ziegler (Jahressiegerin des Lautsprecher-Jahresfinales), Rasmus Blohm (SchleswigHolsteinischer Landesmeister 2011) und Schriftstehler (Hamburger Stadtmeister 2010). At Kampf der Künste’s poetry slam word-acrobats and seasoned literati compete against one another with fiveminute-long spoken-word texts. A jury chosen at random from the audience is awarding points and thereby deciding victory and defeat. Niven weist dem Musikbusiness in seinem Werk eine gewichtige Rolle zu, in seinem Roman erzählt er von einem Musikwettbewerb der besonderen Art: Gottes Sohn nimmt an einer Casting-Show teil – natürlich mit höheren Zielen. Scottish author John Niven will read from his most recent novel “The Second Coming” alongside the Hamburg personality Bernd Begemann. Niven assigns the music business a major role in his novel. He tells the story of a music contest of a special sort: the son of God enters a casting show – with higher objectives, of course. „Wahre Worte weiser Wirte“ ist rein deskriptiv eine Sammlung von Bildern, Fotos und O-Tönen von 21 Hamburger Wirten in Buchform. Überdies hinaus ist das Buch jedoch vielmehr als eine Verneigung vor den Menschen auf der anderen Seite des Tresens zu sehen. Auf 144 Seiten lässt Autor Ulli Müller Hamburger Wirte zu Wort kommen – unkommentiert, unzensiert und mit hohem Unterhaltungswert. Dieses Buch ist gleichermaßen Milieustudie und Hommage an den unterschätzten Berufsstand der Gastronomen.
The book “Wahre Worte weiser Wirte” is, in plain language, a collection of images, photographs, and direct quotes of 21 Hamburg barkeepers in book form. Beyond this, the book is to be understood as a salute to the people on the other side of the bar. In his 144-page book, author Ulli Müller lets Hamburg barkeepers have their say – uncensored and without commentary. The result is high in entertainment value. This book is social environment study and homage to the underappreciated profession of barkeeper rolled into one.
Auf dem Reeperbahn Festival werden Horst Schleich aus dem Crazy Horst und Mathias Storm aus dem Freudenhaus, zwei Kiez-Ikonen aus der Hein-Hoyer-Straße, eine kabarettartige Multimedia-Show präsentieren. Im Verlauf des Programms werden die beiden Helden auch durch einen (zum Teil gereimten) Vortrag, Fotos und Videos von Autor Ulli Müller vorgestellt. Höhepunkt dieses Auftritts ist eine Lesung mit vertauschten Rollen. Spielraum für Improvisation lassen sich die drei offen.
At the Reeperbahn Festival Horst Schleich from Crazy Horst and Mathias Storm from Freudenhaus, two icons from St. Pauli’s Hein-Hoyer-Straße, will present a witty, Kabarettlike multimedia show. Seit 2003 nutzen die Mitglieder der Hamburger Künstlergruppe A Wall Is A Screen Häuserwände als Leinwand, Straßenpflaster als Kinosessel und dieses Jahr beim Reeperbahn Festival ganz St. Pauli als Kino. Ein Kurzfilm-Rundgang mit A Wall Is A Screen ist eine Kombination aus Kurzfilm-Abend und Stadtrundgang, wobei die Umgebung eine große Rolle spielt. So entsteht der verblüffende Effekt, dass Umfeld und Film miteinander korrespondieren und zufällig stattfindende Dinge scheinbar Bestandteil des Films werden. Beim Rundgang im Rahmen des Reeperbahn Festivals liegt der Schwerpunkt auf dem Thema Musik: Es wird Filmisches aus der Schnittstelle von Musik und St. Pauli bzw. Musik und Reeperbahn gezeigt.
Since 2003 the members of the Hamburg artists’ group A Wall Is A Screen have been using building facades as movie screens, streets as theatre seats, and at this year’s Reeperbahn Festival, all of St. Pauli as cinema space. A “short-film tour” with A Wall Is A Screen is an evening of short films combined with a guided city tour, with setting playing a major role. And the results are astounding: films and screening environments exist in dialogue and chance happenings seemingly become parts of the films. The A Wall Is A Screen tour during the Reeperbahn Festival will focus on the subject of music, featuring films at the intersection of music and St. Pauli – or rather, of music and the Reeperbahn. „Jimi – Das Fehmarn-Festival“ dokumentiert den Mythos eines Open Air-Festivals auf Fehmarn, des Festivals, auf dem Jimi Hendrix vor 40 Jahren seinen letzten Auftritt vor seinem Tod gespielt hat. Das Fehmarn-Festival ging vor allem wegen seines katastrophalen wirtschaftlichen Ausgangs in die Geschichte ein, für andere jedoch gilt es als die letzte Sternstunde des Jimi Hendrix. Regie: R. Wenn der Langfilm das Album ist, dann ist der Kurzfilm die EP. Kürzer, knackiger und ohne Füller. Passend dazu spielt Musik immer wieder eine abendfüllende Rolle im Kurzfilm: Sei es die erste Rock ’n’ Roll-Liebe, die beim Kauf einer BuzzcocksSingle gefunden wird, oder musikalische Darbietungen an ungewöhnlichen Orten – all das gab es schon mal in filmischer Form. Und wie der kompetente Plattenladen eures Vertrauens stellen das Flexible Flimmern und das Internationale KurzFilmFestival Hamburg ein Programm aus kurzen (Musik-)Filmen in Albumlänge zusammen.

Dave The Chimp ist einer der vielseitigsten Street ArtKünstler der Gegenwart. Der kreative Kopf malt und sprüht nicht nur, sondern dreht auch Videos, designed Schuhe und Magazine und hat sich bereits als Herausgeber von zwei Büchern einen Namen gemacht. Am bekanntesten sind jedoch immer noch seine Straßenmalereien, die in vielen von ihm bereisten Städten aufzufinden sind. Chimp, der außerdem unter dem Pseudonym Ape Graffiti sprüht, bringt, beeinflusst von seinem Leben in London und Berlin, persönliche Eindrücke in seine Kunst ein und entwickelte seine Arbeiten über die Jahre zu immer komplexeren Werken. Dabei legt er vor allem auf die „one line“-Arbeiten Wert und weniger auf die figurativen Malereien, die sein früheres Ouevre bestimmt haben. Auch seine Liebe zur Literatur setzte er in die Tat um und brachte sowohl das Malbuch „Street Art Doodle Book: Drawing Outside The Lines” heraus als auch seine erste Einzelpublikation „Part Of Rebellion 2 – Dave The Chimp“.
Dave The Chimp is one of the most versatile street art artists working today. He not only paints and sprays but shoots videos, designs shoes and magazines, and has even made a name for himself as a publisher of two books. What he’s still most famous for, however, are his street paintings, which can be found in many of the cities he has visited. Influenced by his life in London and Berlin, Dave The Chimp – who also sprays under the pseudonym Ape Graffiti – introduces personal experiences into his art. Over the years his work has become more and more complex. He attaches great importance to his “one line” works, less to the figurative paintings that characterised his early oeuvre. And his love of literature finds its full realisation in his books: the colouring book “Street Art Doodle Book: Drawing Outside The Lines”, and “Part Of Rebellion 2 – Dave The Chimp, his first monographic work.
